From The Editor Welcome to another edition of Universal, produced by a team of under 25s who live and work in the City of Kingston, and are just trying our best. Edition 42 explores the topic Music. We are constantly surrounded by music whether it is on the radio, listening on Spotify or YouTube, TV ads, singing or even drumming our fingers on the table, music is always there. This edition we explored music ranging from our favourite artists, working backstage at musicals, songs for different moods and a variety of illustrations showcasing how music makes us feel. No matter when or where you were born music has always been there. Thereâ€™s a style, sound and feeling for everyone out there. Growing up you discover your favourites artists and bands and music becomes an important part of our lives without us even knowing it. The development of Music Technology The Phonograph (1877) In November of 1877, Thomas Edison created the phonograph, a groundbreaking innovation that could record and play back sound through rotating a crank. The first-ever sound to play through his invention was a recording of his voice singing the nursery rhyme, ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb.’ However, the materials Edison used in his creation, metal cylinders, and tin foil, resulted in the produced sound lacking quality.

The Gramophone (1887) Emile Berliner, a German-born American inventor, was the first to successfully introduce the use of discs instead of cylinders to produce sound; this resulted in the birth of the gramophone. The gramophone originally played glass discs before plastic and read sound by using a needle that responded to the grooves in the disc. The gramophone developed past the need for a manual crank and would eventually become what we know today as the record player. Orthophonic Victrola (1925) Eldrige R. Johnson, engineer, and founder of the Victor Talking Machine Company invented the orthophonic victrola in 1925. The orthophonic victrola’s design enhanced sound acoustics and was an important step in the development of electrical sound production. The Victrola replaced the gramophone’s horn with either an electromechanical driver or a more compact, paper-cone speaker.

The Long-playing Record (LP) (1948) Hungarian-American engineer, Peter Goldmark, created the first Long-playing record (LP) in June 1948. This original LP disc had a capacity of 21 minutes of recorded sound on each side, sat at 12 inches wide, and had a play speed of 33 ⅓ RPM. The following year RCA Victor developed a more compact, 7 inch LP that reached a 45 RPM play speed.

The Cassette Tape (1962) Philips created the cassette tape in 1962. The cassette tape (or compact cassette) was a significant development in music technology as it was a large step in the direction of portable music, as well as allowing the general public to record on the tracks themselves. The cassette tape’s success peaked when Sony introduced the Walkman in 1979, granting the cassette complete mobility.

The Compact Disc (1979) Sony and Phillips first demonstrated the use of a compact disc and an accompanying compact disc player in March of 1979. The CD was finalized in 1980 and was 11.5 centimeters in diameter and had a 16bit music resolution. However, the CD was not commercially released until 1983 with the Dire Straits’ ‘Brothers in Arms’ being the first single ever released on CDs.

Digital Encoding (1996) German electrical engineer, Karlheinz Brandenburg, developed the MPEG-1 Audio layer 3 in 1996. The MPEG-1 Audio layer 3, better known as the MP3, is a coding format made for digital audio and was created by using the lossy compression format. The lossy compression format made it possible to significantly decrease file size, however, would lower sound quality in the process.

Digital Miniatures (1999) In 1999 iTunes developed Apple Inc. People could download digital miniatures of audio files, making it convenient to find new music. Digital miniatures are what we find on Soundcloud, Spotify, and Apple Music still today.
