Preparing Students for a Changing World
As we conclude Semester 1 of 2026, we reflect on a simple but important question: What kind of young people do we hope our students will become when they step beyond the school gates?
The world our students are entering is increasingly complex, fast-changing, interconnected, and at times unpredictable. Knowledge evolves rapidly, technology reshapes societies, and many challenges they will face have yet to emerge. Success in such a world requires more than academic achievement. It calls for young people who can think critically, adapt confidently, persevere through difficulty, and care deeply for others.
Since 2025, the school embarked on a deliberate process of reflection and re-envisioning. Through conversations with students, staff, alumni, and stakeholders, we revisited what matters most in preparing our students not only for examinations but for life. This led to our renewed vision: Adaptive Thinkers. Resilient Learners. Caring Leaders. These are not just words, but the qualities we hope every Unitian will embody.
Adaptive Thinkers: Learning Through Action and Innovation
Adaptive thinking begins with action, learning through experience, refining through feedback, and improving along the way. We encourage students to start, experiment, and iterate rather than wait for perfect conditions.
This spirit was evident in two Young Scientist Programme teams who reached the finals of the Singapore Science and Engineering Fair.
Secondary 3 students Nguyen Cao Khanh (3A6), Teo Chee Ann Gable (3L2), and Ng Hao Ran Lucas (3A5) began with an observation that elderly users of walking aids may struggle to detect overhead obstacles. Despite early setbacks, they persisted, refined their ideas, and developed a low-cost AI and micro bit device that detects overhead hazards.
Secondary 4 students Aloysius Lee (4I8), Rifqi Riyaz Bin Kamsani (4L1), and Vibandor Caelan Elysia Gudiaga (4I8) explored sustainable mosquito control using Nepenthes plants. Through multiple iterations, including reducing glucose to prevent contamination and refining plant growth methods, they developed a simpler, cost-effective solution.
Though different in focus, both teams shared a common approach, rethinking problems, learning from failure, and adapting with purpose, growing into true adaptive thinkers.
Resilient Learners: Growing Through Challenge
If adaptability shapes thinking, resilience shapes how we endure challenges. Our NCC cadets exemplified this through months of disciplined after-school training, refining their Precision Drill routines with peer and alumni support. Despite setbacks, fatigue, and repetition, they persisted. Their efforts led to a historic achievement, Champion in the Air and Sea District Precision Drill Squad Preliminary Competition 2026 and Fifth Place in the Grand Competition, the best in Unity’s history. More important than the result was their growth, moving from ninth place to fifth place, reflecting a commitment to continuous improvement. Resilience is not defined by outcomes but by the decision to keep going.
This spirit is also seen across many of our CCAs. Our Concert Band was invited for the first time to perform at the Esplanade’s Limelight Series after a year of disciplined preparation. Our Dance, Drama and Choir students will also represent the school at Singapore’s 2026 National Day Parade. Across all platforms, our students demonstrate resilience, commitment and passion.
Caring Leaders: Making a Difference in the Lives of Others
Caring leadership is perhaps the most profound expression of our vision. It is not defined by position but by consistent acts that uplift others.
This year, three Secondary 4 students were recognised through the Singapore Silent Heroes Award 2026. Adam Franklin Bertina Veronica (4L1) showed quiet compassion by supporting a classmate through difficulties and strengthening trust as a Unity Councillor. Gajjela Harshani Reddy (4I8) demonstrated integrity and courage by standing firm in what was right while continuing to care for others as President of the Peer Support Leaders. Chow Cheng You (4L2) exemplified sustained service, regularly volunteering in the Limbang and North West communities while balancing school leadership responsibilities. He is also a recipient of the North West Outstanding All Rounder Award.
Together, they remind us that caring leadership is not about recognition but about consistent service, integrity and compassion.

Leadership in Action: Welcoming Our New Student Leaders
The CCA Leaders (CCAL) and 16th Unity Council (UC) Appointment Ceremony marked an important milestone in Unity Secondary School’s leadership journey, reflecting our vision of nurturing Adaptive Thinkers, Resilient Learners, and Caring Leaders. The ceremony celebrated the dedication and service of our outgoing student leaders while welcoming our newly appointed Secondary 3 CCA Leaders, Unity Councillors, Unity Council Interns, and Peer Support Leaders’ President and Vice-Presidents.
Beyond recognising appointments, the ceremony reinforced that leadership is about influence, responsibility, and service. Guided by the Leadership Challenge Model, our student leaders are encouraged to lead by example, inspire others, embrace growth, work collaboratively, and uplift the school community. Through the continual guidance of teachers and peers, they continue to grow into confident and empathetic leaders who serve with resilience, care, and purpose.

During Term 2 Week 9, students participated in Leadership Learning Week (LLW), a meaningful Student Development Experience designed to nurture Adaptive Thinkers, Resilient Learners, and Caring Leaders. Through hands-on activities, collaborative challenges, and reflective learning, students explored their strengths, interests, and aspirations while building confidence and meaningful peer connections.
Our Secondary 1 students enjoyed an enriching week of discovery across Sports, Aesthetics, and STEM, stepping out of their comfort zones to develop creativity, adaptability, and teamwork. The programme culminated in a vibrant showcase during the Aesthetics Appreciation Programme (AAP), where students proudly celebrated their learning and growth.

Our Secondary 2 students embarked on an enriching Leadership Learning Week, beginning with a 3-day, 2-night Outdoor Adventure Learning Camp at Downtown East. Through activities such as team-building games, kayaking, and orienteering, students developed resilience, teamwork, adaptability, and leadership skills while creating lasting memories.
Building on these experiences, students applied four weeks of Design Thinking to explore sustainable living by designing innovative smart recycling bins to encourage environmentally responsible habits. Through this project-based learning experience, students demonstrated creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration, growing as Adaptive Thinkers, Resilient Learners, and Caring Leaders committed to a more sustainable future.
Stepping Out of Comfort Zones: Secondary 2 Outdoor Adventure Learning
meaningful Education and Career Guidance (ECG) journey themed “Exploring OpportUNITY Through Careers”. Through an inspiring keynote by filmmaker Mr Clovis Ong, Job Taster Day with industry professionals, hands-on Applied Learning Modules (ApLMs), and an ECG Fair, students gained valuable insights into post-secondary pathways, emerging industries, and future career opportunities.
Students explored sectors such as healthcare, finance, maritime, hospitality, artificial intelligence, and information technology while deepening their understanding through experiential learning in Aerospace, Junior Chef, Tourism & Hospitality, and E-Business modules. The week concluded with reflections on personal strengths, interests, and aspirations, empowering students to make informed decisions about their future educational and career journeys.
The programme provided meaningful opportunities for students to connect classroom learning to real-world experiences, while growing as Adaptive Thinkers, Resilient Learners, and Caring Leaders.

One Community, Many Cultures
In conjunction with International Friendship Day, our school celebrated Tamil New Year with a vibrant concert organised by the Tamil Unit and featuring performances by our ISPR students. The celebration began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony and an introduction to the customs and traditions of “Puthandu”, followed by captivating performances including tabla and sitar music, Bharatanatyam fusion dance, folk performances, and an energetic Bhangra finale.
Beyond the festivities, the celebration provided students with a meaningful opportunity to appreciate diverse cultural traditions, strengthen connections within our multicultural community, and reflect on the importance of building friendships across cultures through follow-up CCE discussions. “Puthandu Vazthukal to all!”

Caring Hearts, Stronger Communities
As part of our commitment to nurturing compassionate and empathetic individuals, our school organised a Values in Action (VIA) Shopping Fair on 30 January for Secondary 2 to 5 students. The event provided students with a meaningful opportunity to engage with representatives from seven social service agencies and gain deeper insights into the needs of the community.
Through this structured platform, students observed, listened, and learnt about real community needs, helping them develop empathy, adaptability, and leadership. Working in their mixed-CCA form classes, students gained valuable perspectives and took an important first step towards becoming active change agents in building a more caring and inclusive society. It was indeed a meaningful Character Learning Day.
Our Secondary 1 Values-in-Action (VIA) programme focused on sustainability and reducing food wastage, helping students understand that sustainability begins with small, everyday choices.
Students from 1L1 and 1I8 explored vermicomposting in collaboration with students from National Junior College and City Sprouts, creating composting bins from recycled food waste. 1I7 learnt to upcycle orange peels into purposeful creations, promoting more sustainable festive practices. Beyond sustainability, 1A5 and 1L2 served the Yew Tee community by distributing essential groceries, reflecting on the importance of supporting those facing food insecurity and rising living costs. Igniting Interests Through The CCA Open House
The CCA Open House on 9 January provided our Secondary 1 students with the opportunity to explore and gain a better understanding of the various CCAs offered, enabling them to make informed decisions during the CCA selection process. Our Performing Arts CCAs also showcased their talents through engaging performances, giving students a glimpse into their vibrant activities. We are pleased to share that all Secondary 1 students were successfully allocated to one of their top four CCA choices.
Spring Blessings
On 16 February, Unitians gathered to celebrate the Chinese New Year in a festive atmosphere themed “⻢⼒全开 奔向新⼀年” (“Galloping Forward Together”). The celebration began with a lively Lo Hei session at the Parade Square, where students exchanged well wishes for happiness, good health, and success in the year ahead. Students then enjoyed an engaging concert in the School Hall hosted by the Unity Council, featuring vibrant performances by the Symphonic Band, Unique Fusion Dance Crew, Choir, teachers, and Traditional Chinese Dance performers. A highlight of the celebration was the energetic Lion Dance and special appearance of the God of Fortune, spreading festive cheer across the school. The celebration concluded with an inspiring message from our Principal, Mdm Ong, encouraging Unitians to embrace the new year with resilience and confidence, followed by a memorable school photograph.
Celebrating Culture Through Hari Raya
The Hari Raya Concert provided a meaningful platform for our Secondary 2 Malay students to showcase what they had learnt during the Cultural Camp through traditional music, dance, and cultural performances.
Beyond celebrating Malay culture and heritage, the event strengthened students’ confidence, teamwork, and performance skills while fostering pride in cultural identity and appreciation for diversity within the school community.
Through their shared efforts, students also demonstrated resilience, responsibility, and mutual support in delivering a memorable celebration.
A Fortnight of Language & Culture
The Mother Tongue Languages (MTL) Fortnight is an annual flagship programme that provides students with an immersive experience of their Mother Tongue as a “living language”. Through hands-on cultural and language activities, students deepened their appreciation of their heritage beyond the classroom.
Highlights included traditional arts such as Chinese Seal Carving, Malay Silat and Kompang, and Tamil Yoga, alongside innovative “Tech-meets-Tradition” activities such as AI-generated Hari Raya songs and Environmental Awareness TikTok challenges. Secondary 2 students also participated in a Cultural Camp, featuring workshops and learning journeys, including a visit to the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre.
The fortnight concluded with Busking@Live, a lively school-wide musical celebration where students performed contemporary songs in their Mother Tongue languages, fostering cultural pride and community spirit.
The Spirit of Unity Run
Unity Run is our school’s annual sporting event that promotes the joy of running while encouraging students to compete in a spirited interhouse setting. This year, inclusive sports were also introduced to give students the opportunity to experience disability sports firsthand. Through these activities, students developed greater awareness of the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and fostered a stronger culture of empathy, understanding, and inclusivity within the school community.

Celebrating Excellence: 27th Unity Awards Day
2026
The 27th Unity Awards Day 2026 celebrated the achievements, growth, and resilience of the graduating Class of 2025, while recognising the contributions of staff, school partners, and the wider Unity community. Graced by Guest of Honour, Dr Teo Chew Li, the event reflected the school’s vision of nurturing Adaptive Thinkers, Resilient Learners, and Caring Leaders. Through inspiring reflections by award recipients and valedictorian Lee Yee Hsien, students were reminded that perseverance, setbacks, and support from teachers, family, and peers play an important role in growth and success. Vibrant performances by the Symphonic Band, Drama, Modern Dance, and Choir also showcased the diverse talents and school spirit of Unity students.

Rising to the Challenge at OBS
This year, our Secondary 3 students attended the Outward Bound Singapore programme alongside students from Juyuan Secondary School and Bukit View Secondary School. It was a memorable and enriching experience where students built camaraderie by working together in unfamiliar yet authentic situations, overcame challenging obstacles with their peers, and discovered the importance of innovation, adaptability, and resilience in the face of challenges.
Enriching Minds Through Books andWords
Held from 22 to 24 February, the Unity Book Festival encouraged Unitians to develop a love for reading and embrace it as a lifelong habit. A range of engaging activities was organised to spark students’ interest in books and storytelling, including the creative Book Spine Poetry Contest and interactive Meet-and-Greet Sessions. Through these activities, students explored literature in fun and meaningful ways, while fostering a stronger appreciation for reading, creativity, and self-expression.
On Friday, 8 May, the English Department organised the Unity Word Festival, an engaging afternoon celebrating the spoken and written word. Building on the Unity Book Festival held in Term 1, which encouraged reading as a lifelong habit, the event featured a variety of activities for learners of different interests and profiles.
Led by students from the Leaders of English Programme, Unitians enjoyed everything from poetry appreciation to word games such as anagrams alongside the simple joy of good books and good food.

Honouring Excellence in Scouting
We are proud to celebrate Ms Hamidatulamaliah Binte Md Jamil, Assistant Area Commissioner (West), who was awarded the prestigious Distinguished Service Award (Star to Bronze Award) by the Singapore Scout Association. The award recognises volunteer adult leaders who have rendered significant service to the Scout Movement through their dedication, sacrifice, and exemplary leadership. It was conferred by the Chief Scout of Singapore, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, at a special ceremony held at the Istana.
Ms Hamidatulamaliah shares, “Scouting has been an important part of my life for the past 20 years. What began as a journey of personal growth has evolved into a lifelong commitment to developing young people and serving alongside dedicated volunteers. Through Scouting, I have learned resilience, adaptability, empathy, and the importance of leading by example. The most rewarding part of this journey has been witnessing young people grow in confidence, overcome challenges, and realise their potential. I am equally grateful for the opportunity to work with committed adult leaders whose support, friendship, and shared purpose continue to inspire me.

Inspiring Mathematical Excellence through the Advanced Mathematics Programme (AMP)
The Advanced Mathematics Programme (AMP) provides enriching opportunities for students with strong aptitude and passion for Mathematics to deepen their understanding, strengthen problem-solving skills, and develop higher-order thinking through advanced learning experiences and competitions.

Celebrating Our Symphonic Band Achievements
Our Unity Symphonic Band was honoured to perform at the Limelight concert series at the Esplanade Concert Hall on 11 March. Limelight showcases outstanding school choirs and symphonic bands in Singapore, giving students the opportunity to perform on a professional stage.
This performance marked the band’s first appearance at the Esplanade and was made even more meaningful with the participation of alumni members. Being selected for Limelight was a testament to the students’ hard work, discipline, and dedication to music.
The band performed nine pieces, including My Neighbour Totoro by Joe Hisaishi and Semoga Bahagia by Zubir Said, specially arranged by conductor Wilson Ong. The band is grateful for the strong support from the audience and looks forward to delivering even better performances in the future.

Achieving the Highest Honour in Scouting
Unity Secondary School proudly celebrates the achievement of four Scouts from our 2025 cohort Cheryl Ling Leong Shuen (4A6), Marissa Binte Hezri (4A6), Tan Huizhi Jessyln (4A6), and Chiam Ruay Fang Kaitlyn (4A6) who were awarded the prestigious Chief Scout’s Award, the highest accolade in Scouting in Singapore.
This award recognises exceptional commitment, leadership, service, and personal growth. Our B Division Boys and Girls Table Tennis teams have performed exceptionally well this season, achieving Top 4 and Top 3 positions in the West Zone, respectively. In addition, our B Division Girls made school history by reaching the Top 8 in the National Round for the very first time!
