2023 Reunion Weekend Hello to my fellow IMSN Alumni! Fall is in the air—sort of—at the very least, we have allergens and shorter days! On August 26th, IMSN Alumni Board had the pleasure of celebrating a special day with the class of 1973—Our Honored Guests! We gathered in the Education and Research Center to begin our day with a breakfast buffet, provided for us by the UnityPoint Health Foundation. IMSN Board member Janice Rostenbach McCullough, class of 1983 and Caleb Hegna, Foundation support for our Board, guided the morning event. While we ate, we learned from Katie Fortune, M.A., CCC-SLP, a Speech-Language Pathologist about all the advances in adult rehab regarding video swallows and assessing swallowing in our adult population—post stroke, after injury or for surgery recovery. We learned about the models of assessment and the pyramids for aligning the correct viscosity and level of safe swallowing for adult patients. Our guest speaker certainly knew her stuff! We then tapped into video tours of different departments. Just enough expertise was present from our Board to answer all the great questions our IMSN alumni members had! The video tours included: • Younker Rehabilitation • Central Monitoring Unit • Pediatric Therapy • NICU Following a brief break, some “hardy” members took a walking tour within the
hospital itself. We often highlight the Emergency Room area, including the plaque honoring the IMSN School of Nursing, Light Flight, NICU, the bronzed cap and our beloved IMSN RN pin. Others viewed our new display cases and our memorabilia in the Medical Library. Still others walked the hall of class photos. Around 11 am, the class of 1973, our 50-year honorees, were able to meet for a light and tasty lunch. Alumni Board members Sherri Hanson Miller, class of 1972 and Dawn McGilvrey Kirkman, class of 1976 welcomed them. This special luncheon is hosted by the UnityPoint Nursing Administration. I’m sure there was much laughter and memory sharing! I also know there may have been some “arm twisting” to get a class speaker to share thoughts and memories from the class of 1973! We all returned in the evening for the highlight of the day—the Reunion Banquet. All told, we had about 75 attendees at the banquet. That 75 represented 22 different classes from IMSN. Of course, the 50-year class from 1973 was the largest contingency with 21 class members and several spouses. The class of 1955, 68 years since graduation, had a table full and the class of 1968, 55 years since graduation, also had a nice group! Many of us were the lone representative from their class—like me, from 1980. We were honored to have Denise Cundy, Chief Nursing Executive for UnityPoint Health Des Moines attend the Banquet and give a current update as to where we are in healthcare and nursing. She offered work to anyone from the class of 1973

What started out as the making of 2 masks for guest speakers at our IMSN Annual Reunion that was held virtually, has become quite a fundraiser for our association! I have to say I use my cross-body purse almost daily! We plan to continue to add new merchandise and will be back in the SPRING/SUMMER 2024 with new items for sale! Hello IMSN Alumni! I do hope that you enjoyed your reunion last month. I was grateful for the opportunity to update you on nursing at UnityPoint Health – Des Moines. I had a request to provide further detail on our Nurse Camps in this newsletter. In the summer of 2021, concern had grown not only for the present state of nursing shortages, but for the future of nursing as well. In thinking about attracting individuals to the profession of nursing, the idea of Nurse Camp was born. I asked Wanda Goranson, Manager of our Simulation Center, to put together a team to design a Nurse Camp for the following summer. Goals of the program were to introduce nursing as a career opportunity to middle school age children, teach hands on skills to the participants that they could take away from the camp, and provide an opportunity to energize our own nurses in sharing of their passion for their profession with the participants. An additional focus was to bring diversity into the participant pool by offering discounted fees to attend with scholarships. In 2022 we launched the first Nurse Camp, holding three two-day sessions during the summer. The campers learned First Aid and CPR, how to do vital signs, and how to use our mobility equipment. They experimented with extracting DNA from a strawberry, learned about circulation using real sheep hearts and lung models, and learned how to look at x-rays. On the 2nd day, they put all of what they learned into two hands on scenarios: an escape room where they had to “save” a patient, and an amazing race that focused on safe mobility of patients. The camp ended with a special pinning ceremony that parents could attend. In 2022, there were a total of 59 campers. 13 of them received scholarships to attend funded by a grant from the Polk County Supervisors. Feedback from both campers and parents was positive, our nurses who helped with the camp were very enthused, and a waiting list was started for the 2023 camp. There was coverage of the camp on local news stations and in two national healthcare news outlets. In 2023, we again hosted three sessions of Nurse Camp 1.0, and also added a Nurse Camp 2.0, where campers from the prior year returned to learn even more about nursing and healthcare. We offered three one day sessions of Nurse Camp 2.0. These sessions began with a review of CPR and included a simulation of sensory changes in the elderly, medication preparation and administration, and working with IV lines, foley catheters, and airways. Campers pulled their learnings together into simulations with real volunteers in both a clinical scenario of inpatient care and a scenario involving a patient undergoing surgery in the operating room. In the final patient care challenge of the day, campers identified and responded to a change in patient status. Again, a closing ceremony was held for Nurse Camp 2.0 where campers were adorned with a stethoscope to take home while their parents watched. In 2023 we had 59 campers attend Nurse Camp 1.0 and 39 campers attend Nurse Camp 2.0. A total of 20 scholarships were awarded between the two camps that were made possible as a result of donations from Iowa Methodist School of Nursing Alumni and UPH-DM nursing leaders. In Nurse Camp 2.0 we offered the opportunity for these campers to learn about our Volunteen program and employment opportunities for 16-year-olds. Campers could also learn about our Nurse Residency program. Since the last Nurse Camp 2.0 we have had one camper join the Volunteen program and one camper reach out to Human Resources to learn more about available job opportunities. We will plan to continue offering Nurse Camps to promote interest in future career opportunities as a nurse or other healthcare provider. I would like to thank those of you who have donated to the Nurse Camp fund to help bring campers in who otherwise may not be able to come. One of the fathers remained after a session to personally thank us for the opportunity for his daughter. She was a particularly enthusiastic camper, and he was so grateful that she was able to participate through the scholarship option. We certainly appreciate you! continued from page 1... seeking employment! She also talked a lot about Nurse Camps we have held the past 2 summers as leadership seeks ways to develop a love for nursing in our youth. Donna Berends Troxel, class of 1969, gave the Invocation prior to our meal, which was quite delicious! We had Prime Rib, Chicken Marsala, Potatoes, Asparagus and Broccolini, bread, salad, and dessert. I cannot do the food justice! Let’s just say that I cleaned my plate! There was a cash bar available for beer or wine for those desiring an alcoholic drink. All our servers were friendly and seemed to enjoy the evening too. We had a brief Membership meeting to remain compliant with our by-laws. Highpoints included: a recounting of the minutes (already approved) from our last meeting, recognition of our Legacy Scholarship winners from 2022 (Somewhere, in this Newsletter, we will list our 2023 Legacy Scholarship winners.), introduction of the Board members and specific assigned duties— such as Treasurer and Secretary, acknowledgement that the Treasurer’s report through 2nd quarter is available for anyone to review—and located at my table, and motion to conclude the meeting and continue on with the Banquet.

Recognition of the 50-year class (1973) was greeted with much clapping. Vickie Boelman provided memories, wisdom, and insight from the class. Pam Kreuger Ray and her Committee were recognized for their great work on the Memory Book. The class of 1955 (68 years) was recognized next. They revealed that at their ages, they are celebrating EVERY reunion! Shirley Higdon Nussbaum spoke on behalf of her class. The class of 1968 (55 years) was recognized next. Lastly, anyone who wanted to share a story or memory was invited to do so. The stories are my very favorite part! And I love how easy it is to “just step back in time” at the Reunion. You have never attended an event, I encourage you to do so. As we memorialized those IMSN RNs who have passed in the previous year—or we learned of their passing—we were pleased to have Janice McCullough and Sherri Miller, alumni, and Board members, bring a bit of the Nursing Honor Guard to our evening. Diane Fridley Clevenger, class of 1977 read the names of our deceased members and grad year, while their graduation photo was shown for all to see, and the Honor Guard Nursing Creed was shared. We sang a verse of Let There Be Peace on Earth. The Benediction was given by Donna Troxel. And with that, the Banquet ended. Photos were taken of the 50-year class, and many others. You will find several in this Newsletter! Very soon, we will begin planning for the 2024 Reunion, honoring the class of 1974! Stay safe and healthy this winter, all of you, and put a “Save the Date” for August 24, 2024.
