En1090 Q & A

Page 1

What is EN 1090? The EN 1090 is a series of European standards that regulate the fabrication and assembly of steel and aluminium structures. The EN 1090 comprises three parts: • • •

EN 1090-1: Requirements for conformity assessment for structural components (CE Marking) EN 1090-2: Technical requirements for the execution of steel structures EN 1090-3: Technical requirements for the execution of aluminium structures

When will it be mandatory for the fabricated structural steelwork to be CE marked? This regulation will take effect on July 1 2014. However, many clients and main contractors may already require compliance with the EN 1090 standards in their specific projects.

For whom is it necessary to comply with the EN 1090-2? All steelwork contractors that fabricate steel constructions, including on site erection.

What is an execution class, EXC? The EN 1090-2 standard requires that the designer of the project specifies the level of quality control in the fabrication process, and this is called the Execution Class (EXC). The execution classes range from EXC 1 to EXC 4, class 1 being the least demanding and the class 4 the most demanding execution class. A rough division of the execution classes can be seen as follows: • • • •

EXC 1 – Farm buildings. EXC 2 – Residential and office buildings. This is the default class when unspecified. EXC 3 – Bridges and other structures exposed to fatigue. EXC 4 – Special structures, meaning long-span bridges, power stations etc.

What is going to be the most commonly used execution class (EXC)? For the majority of buildings constructed in Europe, EXC 2 will be the appropriate requirement.

Can I use Kemppi's WPSs when fabricating EN 1090 structures? Yes, our WPSs comply in full with EN ISO 15612 and can be used for steel grades up to 355 MPA in manual welding of structures in execution classes EXC1 and EXC2. Our WPSs have been developed in cooperation with Inspecta.

Does Kemppi have WPSs also for MMA welding? Yes, we do. We have the most comprehensive offering on the market, covering the workshops as well as on-site work for both MIG/MAG and MMA welding.

What is the coverage of Kemppi's Universal WPSs? In MIG/MAG welding they cover steels up to S355 MPa and thicknesses from 3 to 24 mm for butt welds and from 3 to 20 mm for fillet welds. In MMA welding they cover steels up to S355 MPa and thicknesses from 3 to 16 mm both for butt and fillet welds.

If there are impact strength requirements included in the project, can we still apply Kemppi's WPSs for MMA welding? Yes, you can. When impact requirements are specified and no impact testing has been performed, our WPSs for MMA welding can be used for thicknesses under 12 mm with consumables of class EN ISO 2560-A E 42 4 B 42 H5. Even if the thickness is greater than 12 mm, they can be used with filler materials Esab OK 48.00, Bรถhler FOX EV 50, and Elga P48 S. We have carried out impact toughness tests for those electrodes.

Do I have to buy a Kemppi welding machine in order to use Kemppi's WPSs? No, our Universal WPSs for both MIG/MAG and MMA welding are compatible with all welding machines.

Can we have custom-made Kemppi WPSs? Yes, you can. Kemppi is the first welding equipment manufacturer in the world whose welding operations have been granted ISO 3834-2 certification. This is solid proof of our ability to develop and offer WPSs independently, which makes our WPS service fast and fluent. Just contact your local United Welding Supplies Sales Engineer

Can we see the WPQR documents that the WPSs are based on? Yes, you can see all Welding Procedure Qualification Records (WPQRs) associated with the Welding Procedure Specifications right after you've purchased the WPS package and registered your user account on our WPS administration site.

Why do I need to register my company as a user of Kemppi's Universal WPSs? Registration guarantees that you get the best service and all the necessary information from us regarding the WPSs in cases where, for example, there is a need to notify you of a change in the WPS.

We use mainly flux-cored filler wires. Can we use Kemppi's Universal WPSs with them? Kemppi's Universal WPSs for MIG/MAG welding cover solid metal wires, flux-cored wires and metalcored wires.

We use various filler wire brands for MAG welding in our production. Can we use Kemppi's WPSs with them? Filler wires that comply with the appropriate standards and classifications can be used. MIG/MAG welding with solid metal wire (process 135) • • •
