Dear Friends, You know how movie trailers often start off with, “in a world where . . .”? This past year felt like we were living in a world where up was down, left was right and the unbelievable timespan became our reality. Like most of you, the past 14 months has been unlike any I’ve experienced in my lifetime, one I won’t soon forget. The devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Tarrant County community was enormous, and the recovery will be years in the making.

When the pandemic hit, I’m not sure any of us understood the magnitude of what was to come.

Like everyone, the staff at United Way of Tarrant County had to shift overnight from working in the office to working from home. We had to come up with new ways to communicate with our team members and community partners. We had to take most workplace campaigns from in-person to virtual. But perhaps most importantly, we had to answer the overwhelming call for help in our community.

I am so proud to share that your United Way of Tarrant County team didn’t miss a beat. From an initial $50,000 investment in emergency relief funds in March of 2020 to help feed older adults to a total investment of more than $5 million in the community for emergency response and long-term recovery, we continued to work hard to help those most impacted by the pandemic. I am proud of our team and how we came together for the collective good of the community.

But our work is about more than how much money we invested. It’s about the more than 550,000 people that received support for their basic needs. It’s about the meals we provided for families through our #FeedTarrant initiative. Our work is about the food we made available for older adults through federal and state grants administered by our Area Agency on Aging.

And it’s about the Personal Protective Equipment we distributed at no cost organizations throughout the community.

Our work is about the success stories. It’s about providing baby formula to a single mother who was down to her last bottle. It’s about helping someone who was on the verge of homelessness because they lost their job. Our work is about putting food on the table for a family of six that only had one can of pie filling left in the pantry. And it’s about ensuring an older adult was able to refill a life-saving prescription.

The pages of the annual report reflect our work during the pandemic and provide proof points as to why a strong United Way of Tarrant County is so vitally important to the community. We look forward to assisting our community with continued COVID-19 pandemic relief efforts and helping build a stronger and more resilient Tarrant County.

EMERGENCY RELIEF COMMUNITY INVESTMENT COVID-19 provided an unimaginable challenge to our community and created an overwhelming need unlike anything we’ve seen in the last century. To respond to the economic impact and the individual devastating effects to members of our community, United Way of Tarrant County immediately activated its Emergency Relief Fund and infused $50,000 into the community in March 2020.

Following the initial investment, we raised $1.7 million in the first three months of the pandemic through our COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund. We allocated those funds to more than 60 social services agencies, impacting more than 550,000 people.

As part of our relief efforts, we launched the Rebuild Tarrant County Fund in June of 2020.

This fund allowed United Way of Tarrant County to continue day-to-day operations while providing much-needed, long-term support to our community as it recovers from the pandemic.

Through the Emergency Relief Fund, Rebuild Tarrant County Fund and additional gifts and grants, United Way of Tarrant County invested more than $5.5 million in the Tarrant County community. This includes $2,316,580 to provide 418,515 meals to 8,039 older adults through federal and state grants administered by United Way of Tarrant County’s Area Agency on Aging. We provided 163,310 meals to more than 6,200 families in Tarrant County through our #FeedTarrant initiative at an investment of $865,544. Our Women United group raised $52,711 providing 11,363 units of baby formula to families in Tarrant County. And, as part of our Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) program, we provided almost 2 million units of PPE at no cost to almost 500 organizations in Tarrant County for an investment of $565,750.

Our work this last year has meant food on the table, formula for babies, the ability for many to pay rent, mortgages and utilities and so much more. For some, it was the difference between making an impossible choice of buying food or a health sustaining prescription. The longterm consequences to choices like these will be with us for some time to come and United Way of Tarrant County, through its generous donors and additional funding through grants, will continue to invest in the community we love so dearly.

OMBUDSMAN VIRTUAL VISITS From March 2020 through August 2020 the Area Agency on Aging Ombudsman team made more than 1,600 virtual visits to older adults residing in nursing homes and assisted living facilities as a result of the shelter-in-place mandate. Normally, these visits all would be in person. Since then, more than 1,000 visits have been made through a hybrid approach of virtual and in-person based on the circumstances of the client. For all in-person visits, team members follow all CDC safety guidelines and fully wear Personal Protective Equipment.

CASE MANAGEMENT The impact on COVID-19 on older adults was significant. Our case management staff found an increase in the feelings of social isolation among clients 60 years old or older, particularly those who live alone with dementia. Staff also noticed a decline in mental health as some clients experienced depression and new onset of panic attacks. Reports of falls and weakness due to lack of normal and routine activities increased as a result of COVID-19.

These issues were difficult to manage as our Area Agency on Aging case managers could no longer conduct in-home visits because of the pandemic. However, our case managers adapted to the change conducting more than 30 visits each week via telephone during the pandemic. Because of this effort, vital services continued to be provided to clients and caregivers. This care helped improve the quality of life of older adults and allowed them to remain in their homes safely. Most importantly they felt cared for and not forgotten.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES TOGETHER

PRESERVE THE FORT

$54.9 MILLION DISTRIBUTED TO FORT WORTH SMALL BUSINESSES United Way of Tarrant County partnered with the City of Fort Worth to distribute $54.9 million in funding from the CARES Act to Fort Worth small businesses through the Preserve the Fort grant program. A total of 1,640 grants were administered to local small businesses impacted by COVID-19 and the stay-in-place mandate which temporarily closed businesses and greatly reduced customer capacity for months.

Thirty-two percent of grants were awarded to Minority Business Enterprises (MBE) and 31 percent were granted to businesses in the Neighborhood Empowerment Zones and Designated Investment Zones – areas of Fort Worth that are predominantly low-tomoderate income, which the city has identified for revitalization efforts. In addition, 83 percent of grants were awarded to businesses with less than five employees.

We have been able to maintain our staff and continue to serve the good people of Fort Worth healthy and nutritious food and drinks. We are honored and blessed.

CREATIVE INDUSTRY RELIEF FUND

SUPPORTING LOCAL CREATIVES STRUGGLING DURING COVID-19 In partnership with Hear Fort Worth and Film Fort Worth, United Way of Tarrant County established a creative industry relief fund to support Tarrant County artists who saw their livelihoods disappear overnight. With the shelter-in-place mandate dictating the closure of bars and restaurants, many performers, most of whom didn’t qualify for unemployment, had no means of earning an income. The fund, which raised $15,000, paid $300 each to 50 musicians, artists, performers and filmmakers who lost work as a result of the pandemic.

KEEPING OUR COMMUNITY SAFE United Way of Tarrant County launched a free Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) distribution program in June 2020 for nonprofit organizations and the faith community as part of relief efforts related to COVID-19.

MORE THAN 2 MILLION PIECES OF PPE DISTRIBUTED including disposable surgical masks, face shields, KN-95 face masks, gloves, hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes, thermometers and disinfectant spray.

The program was made possible through CARES Act funding from Tarrant County, cash and in-kind donations from Bank of America and the Rainwater Foundation.

FEEDING THOSE IN NEED FEED TARRANT INTRO

FEED TARRANT 1,200 VOLUNTEERS FED 6,200 FAMILIES

Food insecurity was one of the biggest issues as a result of the pandemic. With the shelter-in-place mandate and school closures, thousands of families had trouble putting food on the table. Lost wages made it difficult to make ends meet and school districts, which provided breakfast and lunch, were unable to feed students, who were not in school. While directly distributing food is outside of our normal scope, United Way of Tarrant County, with noted partners, including our board member Carlo Capua, Z’s Cafe, local food banks and school districts, created the Feed Tarrant initiative to serve students and their families.

During a six-month time frame, Feed Tarrant provided more than 6,200 families with a total of 163,310 meals at a value of $865,544. Funding for this effort came from generous grants provided by Folsom Point Charities, Facebook, the Rees-Jones Foundation, the Sid Richardson Foundation and CARES Act dollars distributed by Tarrant County and the City of Fort Worth. Some 1,200 volunteers donated 3,000 hours of service to make the project a reality.

THE WOMEN UNITED DONOR NETWORK PROVIDED $52,711 IN COVID-19 RELIEF 11,363 UNITS OF FORMULA DISTRIBUTED TO FAMILIES

Linda* was a working mother with two jobs who lost her main income due to COVID-19. She had to make several adjustments to her budget because her normal monthly income had dropped dramatically.

The donated cans of formula alleviated intense pressure and stress for these families.

Women United is grateful to all donors who supported this initiative and helped meet this critical need throughout Tarrant County. *Name changed for privacy.

STORIES OF HOPE 6 STONES Our grant request from United Way of Tarrant County supported emergency school supplies for at home learning immediately following the first shutdown of schools after Spring Break 2020 when parents unexpectedly needed to educate students at home and may have lacked basic school supplies to accomplish this important goal.

We served more than 35,000 individuals this year - double a normal year - due to the impacts of COVID on our community in North East Tarrant County.

One parent said, ‘I appreciate you all standing outside in the heat guiding traffic and loading cars. You could have been anywhere, but you woke up that morning with the intent to help us parents. My family is in need of these supplies more this year than any year before.’

COMMUNITY STOREHOUSE Community Storehouse was able to provide relief to 4,800 families which in turn meant thousands of people thanks to the financial support provided by United Way of Tarrant County. One story involves a young wife and mother of five children, ages 2 to 14. Her story began almost two years ago when issues with health caused both herself and her husband to be away from the workforce which caused them to lose the ability to provide food and shelter for her young family.

They turned to Community Storehouse for support, but then the pandemic hit and made matters worse. Then her husband contracted COVID- 19 which required hospitalization, only adding to their financial hardship. Thanks to support from United Way of Tarrant County, Community Storehouse was able to further help her and her family by providing food and personal hygiene items to last her for several months.
