Women United

Women United, an affiliate of the United Way, focuses on early childhood education in Monongalia and Preston counties.

On May 23, 2018, Women United launched Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Monongalia County.

children in Mon County signed up to receive books through DPIL

Usually, Women United members organize Power of the Purse to raise money to fund Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. However, because of the pandemic, Power of the Purse had to be canceled. Instead, Women United called upon several local celebrities to read children’s books during a virtual event.

That event ended up raising $2,715 for the Imagination Library.

Emerging Leaders, an affinity group of the United Way for donors between the ages of 19-40, spent several hours volunteering with the Helpful Harvest Food Program in 2020. They packed boxes with fresh produce, which were then given to area food pantries to distribute to those in need.

Emerging Leaders also organized the Spooky Sprint Virtual 5K Run/Walk, which was held in October. The event was sponsored by WVU Medicine and raised $6,085.72 for the fall campaign. Those who participated in the virtual race received T-shirts, medals, and race bibs, and then posted photos and/or videos of their race through the community.

Helpful Harvest is an anchor project at the former hotel on Scott Avenue and serves both Mon and Preston counties. With the help of Preston Workshop, the program gets food to 35 area food pantries, thanks to produce from Appalachian Sustainable Development and the USDA Farmers to Families Food Box Program.

Food Drives

Thanksgiving Giveaway

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is going strong in Mon County, with 2,238 students currently enrolled, which is about 40% of eligible children in the county.

Statewide, more than 12,000 new children were gifted books in 2020.

The Full Service Food Drive was monetary only in 2020 and raised about $900. The Country Roads Statewide Food Drive collected 48,000 pounds of food and raised $52,355 across the state.

Other food drives included the Battle of the Brands and WV Without Hunger.

The United Way, Pantry Plus More and Preston County Workshop helped about 1,000 families in need with food for Thanksgiving. The event was funded by a Hazel Ruby McQuain Charitable Trust grant. About 45,000 pounds of food was purchased, including turkeys, sweet potatoes, rolls, pumpkin pies, and more.

Between August and December, 61 people participated in the Breaking the Cycle online simulator, which helped people learn what it was like living in poverty and having to make hard choices. Here is what some of them had to say: - “I think we need more options for people that are struggling and a better understanding of what they go through.”

- “Familiar. Humbling. Irritating.”

- “This hit close to home, having grown up in poverty, with food insecurity, lack of access to medical care, and many of the issues faced by the Hart family.

I think this will really help people who haven't experienced these challenges to get a glimpse into what it's like.”

WV211 is here to help

A collaborative project of the United Ways of West Virginia, WV211 is the health and human service hotline staffed by call specialists who answer calls and make referrals to agencies in the community who can help.

In 2020, a total of 591 calls were made to WV211 in Monongalia and Preston counties.

More than 1,000 referrals were made to area agencies. The No. 1 need was utility help, followed by food insecurity.

Community food pantries were also able to keep in touch and learned more about the Helpful Harvest Food Program. The Warm Hands Warm Hearts Outerwear Collection was able to be held and collected 1,156 items.

The 39th Annual Holiday Toy and Food Distribution looked very different this year as the food distribution was held separately from the toy distribution because of the pandemic. About 400 families received toys from Christian Help, and hundreds of cars drove through the mobile food pantry held Dec. 4, 2020, at the former hotel on Scott Avenue. The Monongalia County Humane Society distributed 11,000 pounds of pet food that will help feed 1,000 pets during the event. Morgantown Board of Realtors members helped deliver 427 Helpful Harvest food boxes to homebound and shut-ins during the event. This event wouldn’t be possible without our partners, Christian Help and Monongalia County Humane Society, and our sponsors Kroger and DTE Energy.

Emerging Leaders, an affinity group of the United Way for donors between the ages of 19-40, spent several hours volunteering with the Helpful Harvest Food Program in 2020. They packed boxes with fresh produce, which were then given to area food pantries to distribute to those in need.

Emerging Leaders also organized the Spooky Sprint Virtual 5K Run/Walk, which was held in October. The event was sponsored by WVU Medicine and raised $6,085.72 for the fall campaign. Those who participated in the virtual race received T-shirts, medals, and race bibs, and then posted photos and/or videos of their race through the community.

Women United

Women United, an affiliate of the United Way, focuses on early childhood education in Monongalia and Preston counties.

On May 23, 2018, Women United launched Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Monongalia County.

Usually, Women United members organize Power of the Purse to raise money to fund Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. However, because of the pandemic, Power of the Purse had to be canceled. Instead, Women United called upon several local celebrities to read children’s books during a virtual event.

That event ended up raising $2,715 for the Imagination Library.
