hanks to you, the pandemic didn't slow us down. We are grateful to you for ensuring that we didn't miss a beat serving our neighbors, friends and family in our six-county home here in the Midlands: Calhoun, Fairfield, Lexington, Newberry, Orangeburg and Richland. We continue to be passionate about connecting and inspiring all sectors of society — individuals, businesses, nonprofit organizations and governments — to create long-term social change that produces healthy, well-educated and financially-stable individuals and families.

We envision a community where all members – children, youth, adults and seniors – achieve their potential. We invite you — our donors, volunteers, partners and community members — to celebrate our accomplishments through you and to also keep fighting with us to give everyone a chance to succeed for generations to come. We are united more than ever, and for almost 100 years, we have been the most collaborative, efficient, and accountable way to invest in the Midlands. These are your contributions in action in 2019-2020.

No one could have expected what our country, state and hometown went through in 2020. I hold such respect and admiration at what a group of dedicated, committed volunteers and staff can do to address the needs of the Midlands and its most vulnerable citizens in the middle of unchartered waters and unprecedented times. Thank you for helping us find solutions to the toughest problems as we continue to engage more and more individuals from every part of our community to be changemakers. — Sara Fawcett, President & CEO

nited Way of the Midlands serves six counties with a total population of more than 850,000. Almost 140,000 people in our communities live in poverty. Poverty affects people across the lifespan and is among the greatest roadblocks to success. In 2019-2020, your contributions helped 48,000 people avoid or emerge from economic crises, improve their health, increase their income, or secure or remain in housing. You also improved opportunities for children and youth to succeed with home libraries, tutoring or youth development programs. United Way uses three strategies for community improvement: investing in programs managed by community partners, managing United Way programs and initiatives, and advocating for policy and systems change. These strategies are guided by our 2019 Community Impact Plan. This report summarizes results from the 2019-2020 investments in community and United Way programs.

[48,000+] That's the number of people who were given help by programs run by and supported by United Way. We couldn't have done it without the help of our 65 Community Impact Partners. Thank you!

he emergence and rapid spread of the novel coronavirus disrupted lives throughout our community and in ways that many of us never expected. Our focus on the immediate situation didn't allow us to overlook the consequences that closed schools, shuttered workplaces and overwhelmed hospitals had on people’s longer-term education, health and financial stability, particularly the most vulnerable in our community. Since the pandemic reached our community, the Midlands’ health and human service organizations have experienced a surge in demand for services from our neighbors

who have been significantly impacted by the outbreak. Thanks to partners like you, United Way of the Midlands activated immediately by mobilizing, convening and deploying resources to provide support where it was needed most, including starting the COVID-19 Response Fund with 100% of proceeds going to help those in need. Our campaign is more important than ever in providing United Way and its partners with the resources they need to help our community recover, including building resiliency and providing tutoring for elementary school children. As the Midlands slowly emerges from this pandemic, we can’t go back to normal. We must do better, and we must do it differently. Your support is more crucial than ever to help both children and adults bridge the gaps that were widened by the pandemic.

We know that when our communities succeed, so do we. United Way provides us the opportunity to improve the health and human service needs of our local community. — David Solano, Enterprise Holdings, 2019 Spirit of the Midlands award recipient

efore the pandemic hit and places closed, United Way was already meeting with Community Impact Partners, health care providers, government officials and others to prepare. Our staff and volunteers have worked tirelessly from home and in the field to meet the needs of those affected. Our COVID-19 Response Fund was created to help local residents meet basic needs including food, shelter and assistance with rent and utility bills. We also provided Internet to youth experiencing homelessness in shelters so that they wouldn’t fall behind in school, delivered 5,000 books to students in eight school districts and continued to provide home-delivered meals for seniors without interruption. And United Way will be here to keep leading the way to recovery.

3,300 Your COVID gift supported education when more than 3,300 Midlands families needed you most. You helped United Way provide childcare for children of essential workers through day camps. You also supported families with basic needs and learning kits plus technology for virtual home visits.

2,800 Your COVID gift provided shelter, emergency financial help and motel vouchers to nearly 2,800 individuals. You helped United Way support agencies facing increased costs, improved WiFi at youth and family shelters and provided personal support to individuals with disabilities, helping them access critical resources.

10,557 Your COVID gift helped more than 10,557 people who were struggling to put food on the table and access health care. United Way was able to support increased demand at food pantries, helped with meal delivery for seniors, and developed telehealth services for Midlands residents.

United Way believes a strong foundation of reading greatly impacts a child’s success in school and beyond. The Midlands Reading Consortium (MRC) is a library of services including one-to-one tutoring, book donations, book nooks, at-home libraries through Be a Book Bunny, parent engagement events, guest reading opportunities for individuals and companies, and summer reading camps. Last year, United Way supporters helped 691 elementary students improve their reading skills in 27 schools across our six-county footprint. Of those children, 99% proceeded to the next grade. These programs work hand-in-hand to provide children and adults the tools they need to be healthy, productive members of society. That means when you give to United Way, you're not just helping one person...you're investing in the entire community, in the most effective and efficient way.

Resilient Midlands (RM) (formerly Resilient Richland) develops systems and services that prevent and treat the toxic effects of trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). To address ACEs, RM focuses on four strategies: 1) community awareness about trauma and its effects on children, 2) targeted training for professionals working with children, 3) developing prevention interventions with parents and caregivers to increase protective factors 4) communitybased Resiliency Teams to provide intensive support to children and families experiencing complex trauma. Last year, 3,251 people participated in RM awareness activities and trainings or engaged in direct interventions. Learn more resilientmidlands.org.

hen people don’t have basic needs met, it’s very difficult for them to plan for the future. United Way of the Midlands helps people get back on their feet so they can thrive. Through surviving a pandemic to navigating everyday, unexpected crises, United Way is here to make sure people get what they need and connect them to best resources. Basic needs include help with emergency food, emergency shelter, electric bills, making rent and access to 2-1-1, United Way’s information and referral service. We're also happy to partner with some of the best organizations in the Midlands who help us make everything happen.

During the 2020 pandemic, United Way partnered with Verizon Wireless, who donated 800 items including toothpaste and toothbrushes to create disaster kits for Transitions clients, many of whom are especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus. "We are open 24 hours a day, and we have to continue to provide services for our clients, which is one of the most vulnerable populations in the city. These care kits will be vitally critical for our clients," said Ram'on Wideman, vice president of operations for Transitions. Students from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine volunteered to help with putting the kits together. "We are keeping our community together," said Becky Morrison, director of major gifts and leadership programs. "We are connecting volunteers who are ready, willing and able to help. And to help those who would otherwise go without."

ids all over South Carolina are trying to get an education from home these days. For more than 10,000 of them who aren’t living in a permanent home, that’s even harder.

Within days of schools being cancelled in March 2020, Midlands shelters realized changes had to be made due to social distancing. Access to Wi-Fi was needed immediately to help kids experiencing homelessness keep up with their peers academically. At Homeless No More, which assists 62 families, students typically share a community center that had Wi-Fi to get their schoolwork done. However, the students can’t gather and need to stay at least six feet from one another. Families don’t have access to Wi-Fi in their rooms unless they have a hotspot on their phone. The United Way of the Midlands COVID-19 Response Fund assisted Homeless No More and Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter with some of the funding to upgrade internet services at their locations. Students at the Family Shelter now have outdoor picnic tables that allows them to get their schoolwork done while maintaining safe distance from one another. “This has allowed our families to embrace the e-learning environment,” said Lila Anna Sauls, Homeless No More president and CEO. “In the beginning, our team was having to print things out and find a middle ground to help the students and our families keep up. Our parents now can help take an active role and our students are able to keep up with their peers.” Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter, which has two locations, a children’s shelter and teen house, assists 45 people. Many of the residents are either in high school, working towards their GED or attending Midlands Technical College. “We wanted to ensure that we were able to provide them with access to their education during this time,” said Jill Lawson McHugh, Palmetto Place executive director.

More than a Donation

T

he world of the homeless may seem very far from yours, but in some ways it is not. The loss of a job, the illness or death of a spouse or a child, or a severe physical disability could be the road to homelessness for any of us.

While walking around town, Francesca Mullins’ son, Roman, saw a couple people sleeping on benches, and it raised questions. Following the discussion with his mom, he asked if they could buy some coats and blankets for the homeless. “I thought it would be a great learning opportunity,” Francesca said. “He asked friends, family, neighbors, members of the golf course and I asked at work.” The goal was to collect a total of 50 coats and blankets. “It turned out to be so much more,” Francesca said. “We were so happy to help and be a part of it.” The donation was used and given out during the Point in Time (PIT) Count. The count is a national effort led by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to estimate the number of Americans without safe, stable housing to produce a one-day snapshot of community needs.

uring a time of stay at home orders across the state, WellPartners Adult Dental Clinic provided care by appointments. The children’s clinic was closed except for emergencies.

Hospital emergency rooms typically do not have a dentist on staff. Patients are prescribed antibiotics and painkillers and are told to visit their dentist. COVID-19 may have restricted movement of people, but the dentists and clinicians continued to provide access to care during a difficult time.

“The challenge for us is that we are still available to provide those necessary services during this time,” said Tamara Stockton, DDS, MAGD. Dr. Stockton oversees the Wellness Partners adult dental clinic for uninsured and underinsured in the Midlands. The services include preventive and restorative care. “Another reason it is important to keep this clinic open is to keep patients with dental problems out of emergency rooms,” Stockton added.
