Praise God, from whom all blessings flow! The words of the doxology often sung in traditional worship services after the receiving of tithes and offerings has been on my heart: “Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.” God’s blessings are flowing at United as we look back and thank God for all that has happened through this seminary in the first 150 years of United’s history. And blessings are flowing as we look at what’s to come.

God’s blessings are flowing through new partnerships and programs. This year we feature the latest from the Bishop Bruce Ough Innovation Center (p. 9) that launched in January 2021, a Hispanic House of Study (p. 8) approved to start in Fall 2022, an MDiv-MBA partnership between United and Dakota Wesleyan University (p. 10), and finally, the 10-year anniversary of one of United’s largest annual events: the Holy Spirit Seminar (p. 10). God is on the move at United, and we praise God for continuing to pour out blessings on us to do the ministry God has called us to: preparing faithful and fruitful Christian leaders to make disciples of Jesus Christ.

We also praise God for the blessing of United’s leaders: Dr. Kent Millard, our president; Mr. and Mrs. Rick and Vicki James, who matched every dollar given to burn the mortgage; Dr. Harold Hudson and Ms. Janice Kronour, who retired after faithfully leading our doctoral program for nearly two decades; Dr. Elvin Sadler and Ms. Deanna York, who will take their places; Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor, who shaped the current doctoral program (see p. 17); Drs. Jim and Barbara Holsinger, who gave to name the administrative wing (p. 11); Bishop J. Michael Lowry, who becomes United’s Bishop-in-Residence this January (p. 12); alumni/ae Rev. Doug and Rev. Dr. Cathy Johns (p. 15) and Rev. Dr. Jack Sullivan Jr. (p. 16); and many more whose stories are featured in these pages.

We sang the doxology in worship after the official burning of the mortgage at United’s 150th anniversary service on October 10, 2021. In fact, this hymn was sung generations before by the leaders of United when the mortgage was paid off in 1945. This is a breakthrough moment for United, and we give God thanks and praise for all the generous leaders who gave and prayed throughout this campaign. A special booklet is included to recognize all the donors who contributed to the Burn the Mortgage campaign.

President’s Update Friends: On October 10, 2021, nearly 300 leaders and friends of United Theological Seminary gathered at the Marriott Hotel in Dayton, Ohio, to burn the $4 million mortgage on our building and celebrate our 150th anniversary. We look back on the past 150 years and say thank you for God’s faithfulness and support of United Theological Seminary through two world wars, the Great Depression, countless financial challenges, a worldwide pandemic, two denominational mergers, three name changes and four different locations.

Bishop Milton Wright was President of the United Brethren in Christ Education Committee, which founded Union Biblical Seminary on October 11, 1871, with a starting class of 11 students. Today, 150 years later, United is preparing nearly 500 students annually to be faithful and fruitful Christian leaders. We estimate that United has educated more than 10,000 men and women over the past 150 years to make disciples of Jesus Christ in the United States and all over the world. Dr. Walter Roberts served as president from 1938 through 1965 (27 years), and was our longest-serving president.

Union Biblical Seminary changes name to Bonebrake Theological Seminary The seminary changed its name to Bonebrake Theological Seminary after receiving a gift from John and Mary Bonebrake (pictured) of over $86,000 in Kansas farmland. It was the largest single gift the seminary had received at the time. The name honored the six great-uncles of John Bonebrake who had been pioneer United Brethren preachers.

Now, 75 years later, history repeats itself as we burn the mortgage on our Denlinger Road property during our 150th anniversary as a seminary.

God is also leading us into a brighter future with the launching of the Bishop Bruce Ough Innovation Center, the opening of five new Houses of Study over the next five years to reach more master’s students, and our growing Doctor of Ministry program. Today we pray to God: For all that has been, thanks! For all that will be, yes!

We thank God for the 400 persons who have given $4 million over the past five years to make it possible for us to burn the mortgage today.

Grace and peace,

Our future is brighter because, thanks to the elimination of our mortgage debt, we will have about $400,000 more to provide much needed scholarships for our students.

Dr. Roberts was president at our 75th anniversary, and on May 11, 1945, of that celebration year, led the seminary in burning the mortgage on our former property on Harvard Boulevard in Dayton.

United Theological Seminary Moves to New Campus in Trotwood, OH

On February 18, 2005, the seminary closed the purchase of a new 80-acre campus in Trotwood, Ohio. United sold its former campus to Omega Baptist Church, which is continuing to develop the space for community ministries. (Pictured: Dr. Daryl Ward and Rev. Vanessa Ward, co-pastors of Omega Baptist Church, and Dr. G. 2017 Naming of the James Campus

After more than a decade at the Trotwood location, the seminary named its facilities the Vicki and Rick James Campus in appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. Rick and Vicki James of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Jameses have invested significantly in student scholarships and matched every gift to the Burn the Mortgage Campaign. Hispanic House of Study

Rev. Dr. Jorge Ochoa, of Northwest Texas Hispanic/Latino Movement

20 21

United Theological Seminary is excited to announce the Hispanic House of Study, which will house a Master of Divinity program entirely in Spanish and offered primarily online. This new endeavor, which will launch in the Fall of 2022, will give us the opportunity to more effectively reach the Hispanic/Latino population, which has traditionally been underserved by theological education in the United States. This 72-hour MDiv in Spanish will meet all the requirements for ordination, while allowing our Hispanic/Latino students to study in their preferred language. We are also pleased to be able to offer a yearly $8,000 tuition scholarship for all students enrolled in the Hispanic House of Study MDiv.

Rev. Rebekah Clapp

Leading this program are Rev. Dr. Jorge Ochoa, of Northwest Texas Hispanic/Latino Movement, who will serve as the Director, and Rev. Rebekah Clapp, who will serve as the Associate Director as she continues to work with United’s Hispanic Christian Academy. Both have a great history of fruitful ministry in and with Hispanic/Latino communities. This new program will be an important way of helping us fulfill our mission to make faithful, fruitful leaders who will make disciples of Jesus Christ. Author: Rev. Rebekah Clapp, Associate Director

The Bishop Bruce Ough Innovation Center renovation is complete! Thanks to the generous financial investment of multiple individual supporters, the remodel of the office space that houses the activities and ministry of United’s new Innovation Center has Bishop Bruce Ough now been accomplished. If you’re on the United campus, be sure to stop by for a tour and enjoy the inspiring professional art pieces created by Maria Bellini (Bellini Artworks) displayed throughout. True to the historic foundation upon which the Innovation Center was created, a newly dedicated prayer room in the remodeled space named “The Powerhouse” is now available for use by students, staff, faculty, and visitors. The Innovation Center has already launched its monthly “Leading Voices” live online webinars featuring national frontline ministry practitioners speaking on cutting-edge new aspects of innovative church renewal. In January 2022, the Innovation Center is scheduled to begin the first cohort of churches registering for United’s distinctive new “Floodgates Collective” congregational renewal coaching and training initiative.

discern God’s next exciting steps and new possibilities. Once developed and field-tested, training to utilize these two new resources will be continually offered via the Innovation Center with the intent to equip God’s Church for forward movement. The design and creation of United’s Innovation Center was birthed via prayer, broad support, and the ongoing collaborative and creative input from church leaders and innovators across the country, all of which will continue to shape the relevance and unique focus of the Center’s work. Dialogue with other seminaries and entities expressing interest in becoming satellite locations or partners of United’s Innovation Center continues to develop. Author: Rev. Sue Nilson Kibbey, Director

In July, the new Innovation Center was awarded a $15,000 grant provided by the In Trust Center for Theological Schools to underwrite the proposed creation and development of two brand-new resources for leaders, churches, and Christian nonprofit organizations. In the 1880s, United was known as a “spiritual power-house.” People from all over would mail prayer requests to the seminary, and faculty and students would intercede for each one. According to the Pageant of Progress produced in 1946 for the seminary’s 75th anniversary, “Frequently, a few days later the mails brought thrilling reports of the gracious manifestation of the Spirit of God.” The Innovation Center continues this legacy with “The Powerhouse” prayer room.

New Shared-Credit MBA and MDiv: One program. Two degrees.

On our mission to equip faithful leaders who make disciples of Jesus Christ, United is excited to announce a new shared-credit MBA and MDiv in collaboration with Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota. Students in this program not only receive master’s-level training in the theological and pastoral disciplines, but also the business skills to help them lead a community in visioning, stewardship, team building, and strategy. In short, the partnership leverages both institutions’ expertise to form leaders who can effectively order the life of the Church.

DWU has for years demonstrated its ability to equip the nonprofit sector, especially pastors, to think and act faithfully in the business situations they encounter in ministry. It just made sense for us to partner together. A student in this program can earn both degrees in as few as three years. The MBA from DWU is offered 100% online and the majority of the MDiv from United can be done online, with the exception of two 3-day formation retreats. The reduced-hour MBA is also open to graduates who have completed a United MDiv. We are confident this Kingdomconnection will equip students and alumni to better serve Christ and His people.

The 10th Annual Holy Spirit Seminar

December 3, 2021, marked the 10th annual Holy Spirit Seminar at United Theological Seminary. Our featured speaker was Mark Chironna on the topic “Prophecy, Nationlism, and the Church.” The Holy Spirit Seminar is the most widely-attended event at the seminary. Dean David Watson once called it, “the Superbowl of events at United.” For those who are not familiar with the Holy Spirit Seminar, here is a brief account of what has come to be known as a revival movement. Upon arriving at United as a professor in 2011, I was strongly impressed upon by the Lord to create an annual event that focused on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. This event would provide a safe space for clergy and laity to openly and freely experience the power of the Spirit. The newly proposed “revivalistic” venue would be an

inexpensive, one-day, practical, annual gathering around some Holy Spirit–related theme. The Seminar would be open to all persons—including academics, church leaders, and laity—from all denominations and institutions. Simply put, the Seminar would offer a worship, teaching, and prayerful environment for all to encounter the Holy Spirit. And that is exactly what we have seen over the last 10 years. Many have testified to being healed, delivered, sanctified, and filled with the Spirit. The Holy Spirit Seminar continues to be a unique expression of renewal in The United Methodist Church and in the broader church around the country. The Holy Spirit Seminar is held annually on the first Friday of December. Mark your calendar, and stay tuned for more about 2022’s event at www.united.edu/holy-spirit-seminar. Rev. On Monday, October 11, 2021, United faculty, staff, and trustees gathered with members of the Holsinger family for the dedication and naming of the Holsinger Administrative Wing in honor of Drs. Barbara C. and James W. Holsinger Jr., and in memory of their parents—Alfred B. and Anna E. S. Craig, and James W. and Ruth R. Holsinger.

We are grateful for the leadership and generosity of Jim and Barbara, who have served God selflessly through their careers, family, church, and volunteer commitments. United is blessed to have Jim as a member of the Board of Trustees. The Holsingers played a major role in helping United become debt-free.

Bishop Michael Lowry: Get to Know the Bishop-in-Residence

On January 1, 2022, Bishop Michael Lowry will retire as an active bishop in The United Methodist Church and become the first Bishop-in-Residence at United Theological Seminary. We spent some time with Bishop Lowry, asking him about his journey in ministry and his hopes for the road ahead.

How did you realize God was calling you into ministry?

20 21 As a student at Earlham College, I had a Road to

Damascus–type conversion in a required class called Christian Beliefs. I was planning on going to law school, and God and I had a wrestling match and, the best way I can put it is, I lost. I went to Perkins [School of Theology] for seminary, but I tried to quit after the first year. People kept calling me to come back, and it felt like the hand of God reaching out.

A Bishop-in-Residence was part of your journey into ministry. Can you tell us about that encounter? I entered seminary as a Quaker, but at the end of my first year of seminary, I went to see the Bishopin-Residence, Kenneth Pope. I had done research on twelve different denominations, and I went in and sat down. I had no idea what a bishop was. I just thought that was his first name. I had decided I couldn’t stay with the Quakers, though I loved them. So, I gave Bishop Pope my 2- or 3-page paper of denominational research. He took one look and threw it in the trash. He said, “You should be

United Methodist.” To make a long story short, I did eventually become a United Methodist, though the road had many bumps and turns. Bishop Kenneth Pope, the Bishop-in-Residence, ultimately played a very important role in helping me sort through my own vocational calling.

As you prepare to retire at the end of December, what will you miss most about being Bishop? In June, I started my 48th year in active ministry. What I’ll miss most is the sense of being part of a larger team in the conference that’s working on making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. I love the sense of being together, working on a holy mission given by and consecrated by God.

What are you most looking forward to in your role as Bishop-in-Residence at United? I am very excited about being part of the United learning community. I am a firm believer in life-long learning. I have so much to learn from the faculty, administration, and students of United.

Spirit Led, Renewing the Church!

www.united.edu

United awarded Bishop Lowry the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree during the 2019 spring commencement ceremony in recognition of his oustanding ministry in The United Methodist Church.

After an incredible career in ministry, any advice for someone just starting on this journey? John Wesley talked about “Do Good, Do No Harm, and Stay in Love with God.” The thing that is easiest to lose in ordained ministry is staying in love with God. Part of that is being constantly open to the leading of the Holy Spirit. As Mr. Wesley taught us, you never do that alone. Get in some form of a small group where you nurture each other in love and grace and help each other walk in faith. Be open. The Holy Spirit has led me in ways I never thought I would go, including to the office of Bishop.

“Be open. The Holy Spirit has led me in ways I never thought I would go, including to the office of Bishop.”

Anything else you’d like to share with the United community? I want to be available. I am deeply grateful for the privilege of this opportunity, and I want to be available in a way to the greater United community. I feel blessed to be a blessing.

Student Spotlight: Sadell Bradley

20 21

What happens when the raw materials of our lives come before the Lord our Maker to be refined, so God can deploy us as the hands and feet of Jesus in the world? That’s what Master of Divinity student Sadell Bradley and her husband, Sherman, are seeking to do through The Warehouse Church, OTR—a new multiethnic, intergenerational, and multi-class church plant in the Over-the-Rhine community of downtown Cincinnati, Ohio.

Studying at United has strengthened her pastoral care skills and deepened her preaching, she says. With a community of classmates from around the country, Sadell has also found a support network for ministry as she and her husband launch The Warehouse Church, OTR.

Sadell was working in corporate America when she first received her full-time call to ministry. Although she served in youth and music ministries, she hadn’t seen many female pastors growing up. But when the pastor’s wife at her former church received a call to pastoral ministry, it inspired Sadell to accept God’s call to engage pastoral leadership. She served on that ministry team for fourteen years.

On June 6, 2021, The Warehouse Church, OTR officially launched in person, though much of their ministry has continued outside and online. Strategically located across the street from Cincinnati’s main city park the church’s outdoor activities attracted hundreds of guests. The church has sponsored puppet shows, community love feasts, field preaching, worship, and communion in the park. The Warehouse Church is in an area of Cincinnati known for the arts and athletics, so the team is birthing ministries designed for their context, including AIM—which stands for both Artists in Ministry and Athletes in Ministry. The Warehouse’s calling is, “Not come and see, but go and be.”

In 2019, Sadell and Sherman were looking for space for their church plant when Chip Freed of Mosaix Global Network introduced them to United alumni Dr. Cathy and Rev. Doug Johns, co-pastors at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church in Cincinnati. Cathy and Doug were looking for the right leaders to birth a church in a historic building God had given Hyde Park as a second campus. That partnership opened the door for Sadell to attend United. She’d desired to attend seminary for years, but pursuing a Master of Divinity was cost prohibitive. Hyde Park had previously established a scholarship at United, and the Johns recommended that Sadell apply.

The Warehouse was set to launch in April of 2020, but when the pandemic hit, the team immediately shifted all their resources to creating live-stream and online platforms and started applying for grants. The church has gotten creative, hosting nightly online prayer meetings, virtual small group experiences, new member classes with people from around the country, and three weekly online worship services that deliver God’s message through engaging content.

The ministry isn’t easy, but Sadell and Sherman feel a strong calling to this work. 85% of churches in the United States are monoethnic, and few multiethnic churches are led by people of color. The Warehouse’s commitment to being multiethnic isn’t a great recipe for church growth, Sadell explains, given that churches where people have the most in common grow the fastest. But The Warehouse’s calling is apostolic—to partner with Jesus in breaking down barriers and to birth a church that looks like Heaven.

Sadell loves the holistic approach at United that brings together the academic and spiritual sides of learning.

Spirit Led, Renewing the Church!

Alumni Spotlight: Doug and Cathy Johns When Doug and Cathy heard about the Master Scholar program to sponsor a full-ride education for a master’s student at United, it was a natural fit.

While modalities and methods may change, United remains committed to preparing faithful and fruitful Christian leaders to make disciples of Jesus Christ for generations to come!

15 Annual Report

During her time at United, Cathy enjoyed the seminary’s practical education that focused on giving pastors realworld experience through field education. She especially appreciated the teachings of Dr. Kathy Farmer and Dr. Ty Inbody. At the end of Dr. Inbody’s systematic theology course, Cathy’s ordination papers were written.

Doug and Cathy have loved seeing the education at United through the eyes of Sadell Bradley, their Hyde Park Master Scholar. While some things have changed at the seminary since their time, they appreciate the continued focus on a practical education and United’s commitment to exposing students to a variety of theological perspectives in an atmosphere of respect.

www.united.edu

Rev. Doug ’86 and Rev. Dr. Cathy ’84 Johns serve as co-pastors of Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church, but they first met and fell in love as seminary students at United. Both were deeply impacted by their education at United. For Doug, it was United’s curriculum that he appreciated most. He was particularly shaped by the teachings of Dr. Kendall McCabe in his worship and sacramental theology course and Dr. John Wagner in his theology of administration as ministry class.

“Investing in the education of young adults has always been a core value of Hyde Park,” Doug explains. “When we heard about the Master Scholar program, it resonated with my heart, and we felt it would resonate with the heart of the Hyde Park leadership.”

New Scholarships United is pleased to be able to offer more scholarships to support the men and women God is calling into ministry! The seminary was recently awarded a $1 million grant for scholarships above and beyond what it currently offers. The grant was an unexpected gift from an anonymous donor who heard what God was doing at United and wanted to participate by supporting student scholarships for the next three years. With the proceeds, United has created the Academic Dean’s Scholarship, which covers 50% of tuition for new full-time master’s students with a 3.0+ GPA. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis at www.united.edu/academic-deans-scholarship.

With the mortgage paid off, United is also able to invest more from the budget into scholarships. As a result, the seminary has introduced the President’s Scholarship. This is a three-year scholarship of $5,000 per year to support new full-time master’s students, and $3,000 per year for new fulltime doctoral students. Interested students may apply at www.united.edu/presidential-scholarship. United wants to make quality education affordable and accessible to prepare faithful and fruitful Christian leaders to make disciples of Jesus Christ. If you know someone called to ministry, now is a great time to apply!

Alumnus Spotlight: Reverend Dr. Jack Sullivan Jr. (DMin, ’93) Says Jack, “Whether on a Cleveland street or in a prison as authorized by the state, homicide is morally repugnant. I maintain that executions do not help victim families find wholeness, restoration, or closure —there is no such thing as closure. Executions just continue the vicious cycle of death.”

20 21

“...we are not imprisoned by life the way it is, but liberated by life the way it may be.” For Dr. Jack Sullivan Jr. ’93, the call to ministry was sparked by one of the most consequential events in American history: the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968. “[It was] just a profoundly sad period of time. I was eight years old and remember people in my Cleveland community raising an urgent question: ‘Who will replace Dr. King?’” Jack recalls. “And so, many of my classmates and I said, well, we would.” That dedication stuck with Jack through 1981, when he was a college student working with low wealth families in Washington D.C. It was then that Jack discovered his call to social justice ministry. Ultimately, he would advocate for the end of executions, a cause that became more important to him after the 1997 murder of his younger sister.

Jack’s social justice passion only grew while completing his doctoral studies at United in the early 1990s. He was one of twenty-one students enrolled in a cohort focusing on the Black church and social and economic justice, mentored by renowned civil rights leaders Dr. Otis Moss Jr. and the late Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor. At United, Jack learned the power of non-violent social change efforts from Dr. Moss and the importance of living in what Dr. Proctor described as the “subjunctive mood,” wherein humans are not imprisoned by what is, but liberated by what may be. These lessons, among others, guided Jack in the years that followed. His ministries as a pastor, ecumenist, and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) regional minister have reflected the social justice commitment that he says is central to his being. Jack’s current pursuits include the transformation of policing, ending partisan gerrymandering and voter suppression, and abolishing executions. In recognition of his ministry, Bethany College, Bethany, WV, awarded Jack with an honorary doctorate in 2013. In 2020, he received the Social Justice Award by Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission. Jack’s vision for the church involves social justice evangelism. Says Jack, “The church’s credibility rests with its willingness to model and spread the love-justice ethic of God made known through Jesus Christ, for our faith is about more than getting people into heaven; it is also about getting heaven into people!”

Spirit Led, Renewing the Church!

Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor “God has revealed in Jesus Christ a paradigm of personal, spiritual, moral, and social excellence; also, the high promises of human potential in Christ call us to strive toward a genuine community to supplant our hatreds, our racism, our tribalism, our classism, our sexism, and our idolatrous nationalism.”

It was this vision that led to his pivotal role in developing and implementing the mentor-based model that serves as the foundation of United’s Doctor of Ministry (DMin) program. The doctoral program was reimagined to empower and educate students to address the needs of the Black Church.

Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor (1921-1997)

Dr. Proctor himself served as a mentor in the program, leading a cohort known as the Proctor Fellows in 1987. While pioneering this model, he also taught as Distinguished Professor of Christian Ethics at United from 1992 to 1994. To this day, United’s thriving DMin program successfully educates and prepares Christian leaders through mentor-led focus groups that concentrate on areas of ministry relevant in the 21st century. By emphasizing important issues such as social justice, church renewal, and pastoral leadership, students continue to carry on Dr. Proctor’s mission, and work towards fulfilling his vision for the future of the Church.

The Proctor Fellows was the first cohort of students in the mentor-based DMin program, beginning in 1987 and graduating in 1990.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

17 Annual Report

When remembering the late Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor, no word seems more appropriate than integrity. A minister, educator, theologian, and humanitarian who befriended Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and served as an advisor to Presidents Johnson and Kennedy, Dr. Proctor’s influential life was dedicated to human achievement through collaboration and an unwavering faith in God.

Celebrating 150 Years Sunday, October 10, 2021, was a day of praise and thanksgiving—celebrating all God has done over the last 150 years of United Theological Seminary and looking ahead to what’s to come. We are grateful for all who helped make this day possible, and for everyone who gave so that we can enter the next 150 years mortgage free.

God, for all that has been, thanks! For all that will be, yes!

Donor Spotlight: Don and Carol Warner

“My parents...chose to invest what they had in the things they believed in. They invested in the lives of people so that the world can be a better place.” Don and Carol Warner were always invested in education. Don started his career as a history teacher, later transitioning to corporate America to better provide for his family. Education was a priority for the Warner family, and their daughter, Rev. Dr. Cathy Johns ’84, was blessed to graduate debt-free from United with a Master of Divinity degree. Cathy’s parents wanted to invest in the lives of others so they could have an experience like Cathy’s. “My parents did not have lots of money but lived within their means,” Cathy explains. “They chose to invest what they had in the things they believed in.

They invested in the lives of people so that the world can be a better place.” Don and Carol gave during their lifetime, but also took steps to include United in their estate plan. As members of the Heritage Society, Don and Carol wanted to leave a legacy of leaders able to change the world. Their gift went toward burning the mortgage at United so more resources could be freed up to invest in scholarships. As Cathy reflects on the legacy of her parents, her admiration for them shines through. “I was richly blessed beyond words,” she shares. “I cannot say thank you enough to them. They just wanted to continue to bless as many people as they could.” We thank God for Don and Carol Warner and for the lives of all the United students they will continue to impact for generations to come.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
