CELEBRATING 40 YEARS This year’s UMA Motorcoach EXPO marks an important milestone. It’s the 40th anniversary of the first EXPO, held at Opryland in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 17, 1984, more than a decade after the founding of UMA in 1971. Over the decades, this annual gathering has brought an industry together, sometimes after difficult times such as 9/11, the 2008 recession, and, of course, the COVID pandemic. Members always come away from the informational seminars and networking activities with up-to-date knowledge and new connections, but social events and fun activities also create many indelible memories. UMA Members are sharing their favorite EXPO moments for this keepsake edition.
As we join this special celebration in Raleigh, North Carolina, a community that draws competitors from around the country to take part in major athletic championships, we take a look at our industry’s crucial role in supporting sports teams, from high school to professional. Behind every winning team is a loyal coach — motorcoach, that is, along with a driver and company dedicated to getting competitors to their contests safely and on time. Our members share their favorite stories transporting participants in team sports. EXPO Express showcases how the bus and motorcoach industry is making a difference across North America, fueled by cleaner-burning engines and enhanced by new technologies that improve safety, hygiene, and fuel efficiency. We are proud to be the official publication of the 2024 UMA Motorcoach EXPO. This annual event is our opportunity to reconnect with you, learn, and discover new products and services. These pages are filled with insights and information that will help you get the most from your EXPO experience. Thanks, Shandra Martinez Editor-in-chief, Bus & Motorcoach News

GENERATIONS OF INNOVATION:
Prevost Positioned for Next 100 Years & Beyond
When a business reaches the century mark, there are certain values that make the milestone possible.
For Prevost, the company’s longevity is rooted in its founder Eugène Prévost and his dedication to innovation, craftsmanship, quality and performance.
“My grandfather started the business in 1924 and we still have the same culture he implemented. We pursue quality and approach things with a customer mindset because we view our customers as our partners,” said Marco Prévost, a product manager who has worked for Prevost for 25 years. The involvement of the Prevost family is another element of the company’s success. Each generation has been part of the business. But the family connections don’t stop there.
In Sainte-Claire, Quebec, where Prevost began and where its manufacturing facility is located, family members are proud to work together – mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, husbands and wives.
1924 Eugene Prevost, a cabinet maker specializing in the production of church pews and school furniture, receives a commission to build his first wooden coach body and mount it on a new REO truck chassis.
There’s also a family element on the customer side. Many tour operators are family-owned businesses that have been aligned with Prevost for decades.
“Family is a thread that’s engrained in Prevost,” said Prevost President François Tremblay. “When you have a sense of belonging, it elevates everything you do because there’s a commitment that goes beyond the day-to-day mechanics of business.” FOUNDED IN INNOVATION
In 1924, Eugène Prévost was working to save his business in the midst of a global downturn. To ensure his woodshop continued to operate, he devised a system of hydraulic turbines and batteries to generate much-needed electricity. His business survived and he soon took a custom order that would change the trajectory of his life and the village of Sainte-Claire.
From the company’s first wooden body coach mounted on a truck chassis, Prevost grew into a full-scale business that was able to weather tough times and expand – even while other North American bus manufacturers faltered. In 1957, industrialist Paul Normand acquired the company and renamed it Prevost Car Inc. Extensive market and technical research resulted in a variety of tentative models: the Le Normand, the Travelair and the Panoramique. 6

1945 Prevost bus design evolves from all-wood construction when Eugene Prevost introduces the first all metal body over an all-metal skeleton. From 1945 to 1947, he gradually phases out cabinet work to concentrate on manufacturing highway motorcoaches.
In 1968, Andre Normand, son of Paul Normand, took the reigns of the company and what followed was the development of some of the most iconic models that are the base of what Prevost still offers today. One of the next advances was the H5-60 articulated bus that quickly became an icon.
“The H5-60 was an engineering and marketing masterpiece because it was completely different than anything else on the road,” said Brian Annett, a second-generation family member who is president of Annett Bus Lines. 1957-1967 Paul Normand (l)

GROWTH AMIDST CHANGE
In 1995, Prevost Car was jointly acquired by Volvo Bus Corporation and Henlys Group plc. In 2004, Volvo became the sole owner and the company set a new standard with its space-saving multiplex system. Two years later Prevost launched the X3-45 with the longest wheelbase in the industry and the largest overall under-floor storage capacity. In 2011, Prevost Aware adaptive cruise braking and the X3-45 commuter coach debuted in the market. The company also took over the market leader position.
Significant innovations continued. In 2017, Prevost was the first to offer an electric fan drive system as part of its electrification plan. eMirrors were offered to improve driver visibility and exclusive Cloud One seating delivered better ergonomics and more passenger comfort. In 2023, Prevost unveiled its next generation H3-45 with increased fuel efficiency and industry leading interior design improvements. The updates wowed customers who quickly placed their orders.
1985 The company expands twice more to introduce the 60-foot articulated Prevost H5-60 bus for 72 passengers — the first in its H-Series.
“When you work for Prevost you’re part of something really special,” said Carl Boulet, regional commercial director central region for Prevost. “Everyone knows Prevost and we’re the one to watch because we’re continually coming up with new technology that keeps the company moving forward.” A FAMILY LEGACY
GENERATIONS OF CUSTOMERS
Since Prevost has a culture of commitment to its customers, the company has relationships that date back decades. New York-based Hampton Jitney has been using Prevost coaches since 1985, starting with Le Mirage XLs.
“Working with Prevost, we’re able to deliver a luxury coach that meets the high standards of our affluent customer base and elevates us as a company,” said Geoff Lynch, president and owner of Hampton Jitney.
Another long-standing customer is Florida-based Annett Bus Lines. In fact, Hampton Jitney and Annett Bus Lines both recently added H3-45s to their fleets. “In our business, if you aren’t dependable, you aren’t anything. Prevost has helped us become one of the premier charter companies in the country. Their brand is our brand, and we ride for the brand every day,” said Annett.
Eugène Prévost and his wife Clarisse had 10 children and several worked in the family business. Since then, grandchildren and great grandchildren have followed in their footsteps as painters and managers. “My first day at Prevost was a dream for me. Over the years, the brand has grown and it’s a name that means something and it’s my name. I’m very proud of that,” said grandson Marco. And, while the past is impressive, the future is even more exciting.
“The next 100 years we’ll continue to be creative and innovative,” said grandson Richard Prévost who has been with Prevost since 2018 as a transport and customs manager. “We’re always going to be building the best coaches because we have the best people.” ›››
GENERATIONS OF EMPLOYEES
For 100 years, Prevost has been based in Sainte-Claire. Today, the company operates a 100,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and has nearly 1100 employees, with more to come as we will be ramping up to 4 vehicles a day in 2024. Within the small town, it’s common for multiple family members to work at Prevost. Mom Isabelle Marcoux and daughter Alexia Labrecque are just one example. Marcoux is a human resource professional and Labrecque is an assembly technician.
“Prevost is a highly respected company and you have a sense of pride working here,” said Labrecque. “In the plant, there’s trust and collaboration and those are important values that drive success for the product and for employees.”
Over the years, Prevost has established itself as an employer of choice.
“It’s not uncommon to see plant and office employees retire with over 40 years’ service, so it’s quite remarkable,” added Marcoux.
2023 Prevost introduced its all-new, next generation 100 edition H3-45 during the 2023 UMA Expo in Orlando, Florida with +12% improved fuel efficiency and an industry leading interior design improvements.
Francis Boulet, who’s been with Prevost for 30 years, recruited his brother, Carl, to join the company in 1996. EXPO EXPRESS

CELEBRATING THE th
ANNIVERSARY
of
UMA MOTORCOACH EXPO ››› BY SHANDRA MARTINEZ The United Motorcoach Association was founded in 1971 by a group of small fleet operators whose voices were not being heard in Washington. The industry was trapped in a stranglehold of nearly half-century-old laws that largely preserved operating rights for a few instead of permitting existing carriers to expand and new carriers to enter the marketplace. UMA (then called the United Bus Owners Association) fought for economic deregulation, and by 1982 over 2,000 carriers obtained interstate operating authority.
For the 2,000 new and several hundred existing motorcoach companies, there was no annual meeting or trade show that met the needs of a burgeoning charter bus market: to see the latest equipment, accessories, and services and a venue to learn and network with others in similar situations. As the industry grew, so did the need for an annual meeting or trade show to show off the latest equipment, accessories and services and to provide an opportunity to learn and network with other operators.
In response, the United Bus Owners of America held its first BUS EXPO, April 17-20, 1984, in Nashville at the popular bus destination Opryland USA. That initial gathering grew into a 40-year tradition.
Highlighting the modern motorcoach, UBOA evolved into UMA and the meeting was renamed the UMA Motorcoach EXPO. Over the decades, this annual conference has brought an industry together, sometimes in difficult times such as the insurance crisis in the mid to late 1980s, unfair competition from local subsidized transit authorities, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the 2008 recession, and, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic. UMA Members continue to benefit from the informational seminars, legislative and regulatory updates, networking activities that offer up-to-date knowledge and new connections, social events, and the trade show floor that continues to be the industry standard.
Read about UMA Members’ favorite EXPO moments, from Cigars and Cordials to notable events hosted by our sponsors, in the following pages.

Vic Parra Former UMA President & CEO (19982017)
Mollie Pruneau Vice President Huskey Trailways Festus, Missouri
“A couple of EXPOs immediately come to mind, both involving our closing banquet, which was typically themed and used to be followed by Cigars and Cordials. In San Francisco in 2008, the theme was rock ‘n’ roll black tie. People came dressed as old rock stars and a few in ’60s hippie garb. Lots of fun! We had the Cigars and Cordials in a tent on the street just outside the banquet hall to get around SF laws. Another year we started the banquet with a pirate duel in a partially lit hall so you could only make out silhouettes of who was dueling. Fun start!
“One of my favorite memories was UMA 2012 in Long Beach, California. It was our first and only UMA where my entire family was there. Normally, it was just my mom, ( Julie Huskey), my dad, (Kent Huskey) and myself. But, that year, we were joined by my sister, Katie, who at the time was probably starting her first year as an elementary teacher. That’s what she did before coming on fulltime in 2020 after my father, Kent, passed away in 2019.
Larry Hundt CEO Great Canadian Coaches and Holidays Kitchener, Ontario “I remember being a conference chairman as a new UMA board member when we did our first joint EXPO with the National Tour Association (NTA) in Orlando in 2013. This was a pretty monumental change for a UMA EXPO. We couldn’t work through it to make it effective, but in concept it was a great idea. I felt we made a really good effort to try to bring the tour and the coach sides together. On the convention floor, we had two sections, the NTA Marketplace and our EXPO, and then we had joint functions. The challenge was that we were mixing tour operators and coach operators, tire manufacturers and hotels. It was a lot of effort to bring the two organizations together on the convention floor. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t make it work.”
It was so much fun. Huskey Trailways was invited to two vendor events that year, MCI and Prevost. So, my mom and dad went to MCI and Katie and I went on a yacht with Prevost. I was 19 at that time, and going somewhere without my parents was soooo cool, LOL. We had so much fun! We networked with a bunch of people who are still our friends today. And it was my first time to California, which was cool!” Robert Saucedo President Carreras Tours Ontario, California “I remember taking my dad, Adelaido “Saucedo” Saucedo, to his first EXPO in Long Beach in 2012, which was my second. He had been in the bus business for years before we started our company. He was overwhelmed seeing all the things that could help our business. It was a pretty cool experience to see all the things that we didn’t know existed. One of the OEMs first invited me to attend EXPO. Before he mentioned it, I had no clue what UMA was. It changed my whole perspective about my business. Now I try not to miss an EXPO, because I learn so much and see the latest products and innovations.”
Tom and Connie Giddens Owners, Pacific Coachways Garden Grove, California “We both had a lot of fun at the UMA convention in San Antonio in 1994. Tom’s favorite memory, other than getting kicked out of the hospitality suite because we were too noisy, was just how big the show floor was and how exciting it was to see the new models of buses and conversion buses and the entertainment that they had at lunchtime — just everything about it was so exciting.
One sad note was that while we were there, the Northridge earthquake happened at home in Southern California, and some of the people who were at the convention had to leave to get home and tend to their homes and businesses that had been damaged. I also have a fun memory of being at the 2009 UMA EXPO in Orlando, where they had an alligator on the stage and suddenly one of the handlers grabbed my hand and had me sit on it. As I remember it, I walked up to the handlers who were on the stage and was asking questions about the alligator. He asked if I wanted to sit on it and I hesitated — then all of a sudden he grabbed my hand, brought me up on the stage and told me to sit down on the back of the alligator. Thankfully someone was close by to snap the picture! It was a moment that I’ll remember forever!”
Marcia Milton Vice President, RMA Coach RMA Worldwide Chauffeured Transportation Rockville, Maryland “My favorite was when we visited Beverly Hills during our EXPO in Long Beach, California in February 2012. I had been to California, but never to Beverly Hills. All the stuff you see on TV – we got to experience it. It was really fun. They rolled out the red carpet for us.
We made a Hollywood connection when I met the mom of Martin Lawrence. His sister, who was our neighbor, introduced us, and she came over for a visit. She lived right around the corner from where we were staying. I introduced Martin’s mom to MCI’s Pat Ziska because we were talking about how an MCI bus was featured in Martin’s film, “College Road Trip.” On a sadder note, we were there when Whitney Houston accidentally drowned in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton hotel. We took a tour that passed by the hotel, where everyone had left flowers everywhere to honor the iconic singer. I think I’ve done every EXPO since 2001. While the different locations are great, it’s always about the people and getting to socialize with your industry colleagues. It’s always a great time to check in, compare notes, and just to know that you’re not out there by yourself. We are such a big family from all around the world.”
Jimmy Hall Owner Venture Bus Tours Virginia Beach, Virginia “There’s a photo of my mom, Darlene Gallop Hooks, at a UMA Motorcoach EXPO with a serene smile and a lizard comfortably settled on her head. It illustrated her sense of humor and her laid-back nature. That was a special EXPO, in Orlando in 2009, I think, because we were there together. Often she stayed behind overseeing operations and always told me, “I got this. Go enjoy yourself,” so I could attend. She passed away in May, so this memory is very special. What I have always liked about EXPO is the fun atmosphere and the events by the sponsors. I love meeting people in the industry and catching up with previous attendees.”

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS
CELEBRATING THE COACH BEHIND THE SPORTS TEAM ››› BY SHANDRA MARTINEZ Every athlete is familiar with the motorcoach, and with this year’s UMA Motorcoach EXPO taking place in one of the nation’s legendary sports regions, we celebrate the role our industry plays in supporting athletic teams and fans by providing reliable, safe ground transportation. Behind every sports team, whether high school, college, amateur or professional, there’s usually a motorcoach to transport the team safely to away games. United Motorcoach Association Members have a long tradition of going “above and beyond” to support their sports team (and all) clients. Considering sports traditions and superstitions, there is often an important relationship, with coaches and teams habitually bonding with their favorite driver and motorcoach. When teams win championships, they regularly take a victory lap in their motorcoach. Hanging on the walls in school halls and locker rooms are team photos in front of “their” motorcoach. Weather and other unforeseen events may ground planes, threatening to keep teams from games and tournaments, but motorcoach operators come to the rescue and get the teams where they need to go.
The motorcoach often becomes an extension of the team’s identity thanks to branded buses, which are used when the team is celebrated in a community parade or other promotional event.
Here’s what our members had to share about their experiences transporting athletic teams.
Alan Thrasher President Thrasher Brothers Trailways Birmingham, Alabama “For nearly 50 years, we have provided the motorcoach for the Birmingham Barons, a minor league baseball team. They’ve had the same driver for 21 years. Michael Jordan helped the Barons acquire a luxury coach when he played baseball for the team. Over the decades, we have adapted to support the ever-changing needs of the Barons. In recent years, we have gone through COVID, when they had to be transported by two buses so there could be social distancing. Now, the team is required to have a sleeper bus when travel is over 250 miles. We adapted a motorcoach to have 24 sleeper bunks for sports teams. During the day, those bunks are turned into tables and couches for seating. Not many charter companies have sleepers, and now we have other minor league teams in Alabama reaching out to use the sleeper coach. When it’s not in use for the Barons, I’m making it available for the other teams. That’s what we have to do — keep on changing.” 12
EXPO EXPRESS
| 2024
Jeff Arensdorf Owner Village Travel Wichita, Kansas “In 2022, Doug Williams was the requested driver for the Oklahoma State University softball team for its whole season. They finished their season by taking home the Big 12 tournament title and placing third in the country. As a token of their appreciation, the softball team gave Doug his very own championship ring, just like the players received. They considered him truly a part of the team! Connections like this are a perfect image of the bond we form with the sports teams we support. There are a significant number of sports teams who trust us to transport their teams, and we’re proud to be a part of these teams in this way. A photo at a Kansas Jayhawks football game made its way back to us from an individual who happened to be attending this game and spotted our coaches just outside the arena. It’s nice to know that our connection with the teams bridges back to those who watch them compete.”
Tom Walters Owner King’s Highway Lubbock, Texas “For each-out-of-town game, the Texas Tech men’s and women’s basketball team depend on me to be at the airport when they land at their venue. At the close of the men’s 2021-22 season, I was in Norman, Oklahoma, for the final Big 12 games. Sporting the beautiful black TTU bus, they went on to Kansas City for the Big 12 Tournament, and I met them there. After winning the tournament, they went on to San Diego for the NCAA tournament, and I boogied like crazy to get there for them. TTU won that, and went on to San Francisco. So I went from driving the team in Norman to Kansas City for the tournament, then immediately took off for San Diego. After winning that tournament, the team flew home for a couple of days of classes, and I met them in San Francisco. I do the same routine for the TTU women’s basketball. A motorcoach driver is a critical part of their teams’ success. I am honored to be a part of Texas Tech athletics transportation and love that they depend on me to be there for them.”
Craig and Hazel Dance CEO/EVP Champion Coach Greenville, South Carolina “If a plane is an hour late, teams accept that. But if the bus is two minutes late, the world is coming to an end. The bus industry is held to a very high standard. No matter what the circumstances are, they expect us to be there. And we are there.
I remember when the Los Angeles Dodgers were coming to Atlanta for the National League Championship Series in 2021. They were coming in on a big college football weekend. We were already sold out, right? But they just expected us to have what they needed. I remember calling the travel planner from the Dodgers and saying, “Hey, I just need to know how many buses you need, because we are really busy this weekend.” And he responded, “I just expect that you will have whatever the Dodgers need.” We figured it out and gave them the 8 to 10 buses they needed. In many ways, these organizations treat us like members of the team. There’s a lot of mutual respect there. And the relationships are personal with all of our sports teams. I have a World Series ring from the San Francisco Giants’ win. And I have two University of Georgia national championship rings. Georgia gave all of their team drivers rings as well. That’s the kind of personal relationships we have with our clients.”
Raphael DeSousa President Umbrella Global Transportation Fremont, California “This year, Umbrella Global had the pleasure of transporting this year’s state football champions — the Ferndale Wildcats — down to Southern California for the 2023 CIF State 7AA high school state championship game. Ferndale is a small, remote town on the coast of California near the Oregon border. Just getting our drivers there was a four-hour deadhead, and we put them up in a hotel the night before the trip. The bus left in the morning, and the trip took 12 hours because the team stopped twice to practice.
The bus was chartered through the help of Ferndale native Guy Fieri, who is famous for his Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” For the players, the coach was a luxury experience. On the way back, the team had a 20-car police escort for the last 150 miles. The local fire department sprayed a water cannon arch over one of the bridges as they drove by.
It was a huge thing for this tiny Northern California community with 1,500 people, and we were able to help create this memory for them. Our driver said he had worked for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders gathering earlier in the week, and to him, this felt like a bigger deal. He said there was more energy and excitement in this small town for this team than anything he had ever experienced in recent years. I’m truly blessed that we were able to provide the safe and reliable transportation that is expected of coach operators around the country — especially when it is for something as important to a community as this team.
Matt Gray Co-owner, General Manager King Gray Coach Lines Chicopee, Massachusetts “The most important thing for me is how we join forces to do community events with a few of our athletic clients, specifically Springfield College and the Springfield Thunderbirds (AHL Hockey). Numerous times throughout the year we will use their contracted (wrapped) motorcoaches for parades, promotional events, and most importantly, food and toy drives to benefit the needy in our communities. Especially around the holidays, we will ‘stuff the bus’ with toys, food, teddy bears, and even school supplies.”
“When working with professional sports teams, we try to keep things non-eventful. We want the trips to consistently be business-like, quiet, and professional. Every once and a while, external forces can throw us curveballs. In 2010, a snowstorm brought 17 inches of snow to the Minneapolis area, and that, combined with the wind, caused the Metrodome roof to collapse.
Mike Canine, CEO Lorenz Bus Service Blaine, Minnesota
On a really short schedule for an NFL team, they decided to relocate the game to TCF Bank Stadium, an outdoor collegiate football stadium that didn’t have winter-driven amenities at that time. The stadium operations folks pulled off a miracle in getting the stadium ready for the game as they had to spend all week removing the snow from inside the stadium – so not too many folks had time to walk through how the typical collegiate busing plan would be adjusted for an NFL team.
The visiting team asked us to send some of our operational employees to the stadium and knock-on doors until we we’re on the same page about the plan. I decided to go myself, and the team requested that I ride along and make sure everything went to plan. It was the coldest game I’d ever been to and the bus plan went off without a hitch.” EXPO EXPRESS

The Ultra Coachliner is built to help motorcoach operators make money. This is because the front-engine motorcoach has the smooth ride, capacity, and luggage space of a traditional coach bus, at only a fraction of the operational expense. “All of this factored in, it’s just a lot easier to make money because you’ve invested less and then you spend less to keep it going,” said Mike Curtis, General Manager, National Bus Sales Inc. “Unscheduled vehicle downtime is not only a maintenance issue, but also an accident-avoidance issue since, on average, 20% of a fleet’s vehicles annually incur downtime due to accidents.” Savings on maintenance are huge. Access to thousands of warranty centers nationwide provides a larger pool of qualified technicians. This equates to a shorter distance to get your bus serviced and lower labor fees. The Ultra Coachliner DXL diagnostics are less complicated, parts are easily available, and the engine is easier for mechanics to access. The Ultra Coachliner DXL’s Full Air Ride Suspension System with ride control makes for a comfortable ride. Smart engineering means operators as well as passengers get a quiet and cushioned ride, reducing fatigue and the possibility of roadside downtime. “This revolutionary bus is changing passenger transportation throughout the U.S,” Curtis said. “The Ultra Coachliner stands out among traditional motorcoaches as a better, more cost-efficient alternative, without sacrificing the high-end luxury you expect to provide your passengers.” ›››

BRIDGESTONE
Helps Fleets Minimize Downtime and Reduce costs
Imagine if your fleet could work more efficiently and meet your sustainability goals, all while lessening the impact on the environment for years to come. That’s the strategy behind our Bridgestone Fleet Care program for Mass Transit and Coach application, a tire management program focused on leasing, tire monitoring, and service event management solutions. MICHAEL MCDANIELS/CHARLIE SHRIVER/CHRISTOPHER LANG
SHRIVER INSURANCE Celebrates 60 Years of Being There for Customers
Shriver Transportation Insurance Agency in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, is marking its 60th year in business. The family-owned agency was founded in February 1963 by Wally Shriver. His son, Charlie, joined him seven years later. “When the insurance world collapsed in 1985, we parted with the trucking industry and focused solely on buses,” said Charlie Shriver, remembering the cover of Time magazine was “Sorry America, Your Insurance Is Canceled!” Over the decades, Shriver has watched more than 50 insurance companies enter and then exit this difficult and volatile marketplace. “Our experience and uniquely qualified service continues to serve those operators who understand what it takes to make educated decisions when comparing insurance programs,” he said. “You simply cannot get comparative insurance proposals without loss runs. You should be receiving these monthly anyway, yet hundreds of operators allow their agent to hold them hostage with excuses and sometimes threats. We have heard every excuse imaginable, and cannot understand why anyone would put up with such abuse.” This year is Shriver’s 53rd year in the industry. He has been joined by his sons-in-law, Michael McDaniels and Christopher Lang. Together, they work to provide clients with “honest and exceptional service.” “I continue to thank all the operators who understand how to best serve themselves,” Shriver said. “You owe it to yourself to call them and understand the meaning of ‘the enemy of great is good.’” ››› 24

Bridgestone Fleet Care’s leasing program uses a pay-by-mile plan that locks in a fixed rate on your fleet’s tire costs. This curbs your up-front investment and avoids costly overstocking of tire inventory. Bridgestone Fleet Care incorporates a mix of new and retread tire options that can bundle with our suite of solutions designed to help fleets improve productivity and achieve sustainability goals. Retreads can be a vital part of your fleet’s tire program; they are on par with new tires when it comes to performance and safety, and they require less energy and fewer resources to produce than a new tire. Bridgestone Fleet Care’s suite of solutions can help minimize downtime for fleets. But if downtime does occur, our nationwide network of dealers and service providers will have you back on the road in no time. Because getting the most out of your fleet is What Really Matters. “Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT) has proudly worked alongside Bridgestone for over a decade now to combat human trafficking by empowering the transportation industry to make a difference,” said Lexi Higgins, Busing on the Lookout Director, Truckers Against Trafficking. “Bridgestone was instrumental in launching our Busing on the Lookout program for the bus industry in 2017, and continues to be a dedicated partner, both as a North Star level sponsor of TAT, and by continually identifying innovative ways to bring TAT’s mission and messaging to the trucking and bus industries.” ›››

HOW WILL EVOLVING EMISSIONS REGULATIONS ALTER OR CHANGE YOUR PRODUCT OFFERINGS IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
OEM Q&A: INSIGHTS, TRENDS AND WHAT TO ASK ABOUT The new year is bringing new challenges for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and they have risen to them. OEMs have been innovative and resourceful in helping customers prepare for and adapt to evolving and varying emission regulations. They also have kept their eye on the future with new technologies that respond to an array of environmental concerns. One big way these manufacturers demonstrate their support for our industry is being at the 2024 UMA Motorcoach EXPO, where they can demonstrate new products, seek your feedback, and answer your questions. We asked the OEMs to share their insights into adapting to changing customer and market demand and what trends they are forecasting for 2024 and beyond. The answers should provide real insight.

In the short term, we are building compliant products that are certified within the 49 states that follow EPA regulations. We will not have a product that matches California’s 2024 regulations. However, product offerings will meet EPA and California regulations for 2027, when the standards will be aligned. This will require investments within R&D to support the regulation, emissions and electrical demands associated with federal changes. Product offerings will be aligned to reflect emissions requirements accommodating EPA/CARB 2027. WHAT TRENDS SHOULD MOTORCOACH OPERATORS BE PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS YEAR?
First, planning for replacement cycle demands. We have seen improvements within supply chain constraints, but have not yet fully and consistently realized pre-pandemic materials flows. Our industry, compared to automotive and truck, is relatively small – thus buying habits previously deployed (waiting for stock inventory that can be pulled from in the short term, supporting short-term demands) do not exist. Next, I would also focus on predictive maintenance, as outlined by each manufacturer’s guidelines, to support vehicle uptime. Lastly, solid mechanic training. As we recover from business model changes, finding and maintaining in-house technicians remains priority one for Prevost and our industry. Asset acquisition is one thing, but maintaining that equipment to the highest standard is another. Investing in maintenance practices is a solid first step for any operator focused on uptime. WHAT IS THE MOST MUST-SEE PRODUCT EXPO ATTENDEES NEED TO ASK ABOUT WHEN THEY STOP BY YOUR BOOTH?
As we are turning 100 years old in 2024, our focus will be on the heritage of Prevost and our evolution as a company. Without revealing too much, I’ll say that our booth will intrigue all visitors. EXPO attendees will have to stop by and see for themselves!

MOTOR COACH INDUSTRIES (MCI)
TEMSA
››› BRENT MAITLAND, VICE PRESIDENT PRIVATE SECTOR SALES & MARKETING
››› RANDY ANGELL NATIONAL SALES MANAGER
HOW WILL EVOLVING EMISSIONS REGULATIONS ALTER OR CHANGE YOUR PRODUCT OFFERINGS IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
HOW WILL EVOLVING EMISSIONS REGULATIONS ALTER OR CHANGE YOUR PRODUCT OFFERINGS IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
Regulatory requirements have always shaped our product offering. Currently there are several new requirements on our radar, of which a few have been widely discussed in various industry forums.
TEMSA is at the forefront of bringing innovative solutions to the market that will bring success to the user and build sustainability in our brand and our environment. TEMSA is a United Nations Global Compact signatory, showing our intent to implement its principles across company operations, strategy, and culture, as well as participating in projects that promote sustainability and U.N. development goals. TEMSA offers zero-emission electric vehicles globally; specifically, in the U.S., the TS45E fully electric motorcoach is available for demonstration and delivery. The TS45E has best-in-class luggage capacity, long range, and is manufactured with TEMSA’s own battery technology, allowing the zero-emission motorcoach to quickly adapt to any application.
On top of the list is the CARB Low NOx regulation which limits diesel engine emissions starting in 2024. Unfortunately, the short timing doesn’t allow for engine manufacturers to meet the deadline. Thus, coach availability may be impacted in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Related pending regulations include the additional states that “optin” to CARB regulation, thus potentially stressing the already limited engine supply; and the California ACF (Advanced Clean Fleet) regulation intended to define the purchase mandate for ZEV (Zero Emissions Vehicles). MCI continues to work with the regulation bodies to create more realistic implementation options and be ready with ZEV coaches to meet an anticipated increase in demand. WHAT TRENDS SHOULD MOTORCOACH OPERATORS BE PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS YEAR?
We’ve been listening to our customers’ suggestions, mining performance data, and making continuous improvements to product quality and reliability. Many of our customers are running fast and hard with fewer staff, so coach reliability and product availability remain paramount. We continue to refine our telematics system - MCI Connect - to better understand operating issues and provide rapid responses to coach operational issues. On a broader level, operators may see product line and powertrain expansion in certain industry segments as they start to transition to ZEV. WHAT IS THE MOST MUST-SEE PRODUCT EXPO ATTENDEES NEED TO ASK ABOUT WHEN THEY STOP BY YOUR BOOTH?
The MCI team looks forward to visiting with all UMA Expo attendees at booth #101. We will have a fully loaded luxury MCI J4500 clean-diesel coach on the show floor along with information on our parts programs, service expansion plans, and training opportunities. But really, most operators come to our booth to engage with their “MCI Team” members. So, we’ll be there in full force and available for comprehensive discussions on matters important to our customers. We look forward to a busy and productive UMA EXPO.
WHAT TRENDS SHOULD MOTORCOACH OPERATORS BE PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS YEAR?
We think it is important to keep yourself updated on the upcoming changes happening within the motor coach world. Examples include EPA updates, state CARB regulations, and upcoming rollover testing qualifications from OEM manufacturers. HOW WILL EVOLVING EMISSIONS REGULATIONS ALTER YOUR PRODUCT OFFERINGS IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
WHAT TRENDS SHOULD MOTORCOACH OPERATORS BE PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS YEAR?
WHAT IS THE MOST MUST-SEE PRODUCT EXPO ATTENDEES NEED TO ASK ABOUT WHEN THEY STOP BY YOUR BOOTH?
We have watched changes over the past few years based on ever-emerging technology advancements from engine manufacturers. We’re also keeping an eye on government regulations, customer buying trends, and passenger preferences in order to plan our direction. It appears, as usual, that mandates are happening before the best technologies are developed. We are preparing to be proficient with all options so we’ll be able to meet our customers’ needs. Our products will have the options our engine manufacturers have available, and our parts and service departments will be trained to take care of them.
As expected, after COVID, customers are looking for cleanliness and safety as never before. But recovery from COVID has also caused shortages of service in different areas around the country. I believe operators could look at the customers not being served well and adjust to meet their needs. It might require additional equipment and drivers, or different types of equipment based on the type of service needed. We get a lot of calls from customers around the country saying they need to buy their own buses or rent because they can’t find an operator that is willing or able to take their trips.
The No. 1 question should be: What advantages are there to operating an Ultra Coachliner in lieu of or in addition to motorcoaches? Why would it make sense to add them to my fleet? The industry started with horses in the front and then had motorized buses with front engines. Is that going backward, or does it make a lot of sense for certain types of contracts?

HOW WILL EMISSIONS REGULATIONS CHANGE THE WAY YOUR COMPANY SERVES THE MOTORCOACH INDUSTRY?
WHAT TRENDS SHOULD MOTORCOACH OPERATORS BE PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS YEAR?

ABC is proactively navigating the evolving landscape of emissions regulations in two ways. First, in response to our customers who are focused on carbon reduction, we have adapted our product lineup of coaches, vans, and shuttles, to offer the versatility of both zero-emission and traditional internal combustion engine options. Next, we are working to prevent CARB regulations from negatively impacting our customers and their fleet needs. Additionally, we are actively collaborating with various associations and stakeholders to address concerns regarding CARB’s state-specific requirements, advocating for a gradual, measured transition to alternative power sources.
Adapting strategically to price fluctuations is crucial for maintaining efficient operations and maximizing vehicle uptime in a challenging economic landscape. Operators must focus on key areas such as understanding and reducing cost-per-mile for each vehicle in the current fleet. This involves evaluating the availability and affordability of both OEM and aftermarket parts. Opting for vehicles that allow for quick, cost-effective repairs to minimize downtime is vital. Enhanced maintenance efficiency plays a significant role in decreasing the overall operational costs of the fleets. It is essential to understand and monitor expenses throughout the organization.
ABC’s flagship 2024 Van Hool CX45 combines passenger and driver comforts with dependable performance, all while prioritizing low operational costs. It features various seating layouts, unique parcel rack choices, and a rear window, contributing to its modern and robust interior design. The inclusion of electric fans streamlines the servicing of after-treatment systems. Drivers benefit from the smart wheel, advanced driver assistance systems, and an expanded cockpit. Additionally, ABC Parts Source now offers a 5% discount on online orders and the convenience of paying invoices through ABC-Companies. com. Visit us at booth #1018 to discover how ABC’s dedication to reducing expenses and enhancing uptime benefits you.

DIRECTOR OF MARKETING HOW WILL EVOLVING EMISSIONS REGULATIONS ALTER OR CHANGE YOUR PRODUCT OFFERINGS IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
CARB regulations call for a transition from diesel-powered trucks to zero-emission vehicles, affecting all vehicles over 14,000 pounds. To sell our buses in the states that adopted CARB regulations, we will have to order our chassis from the OEM equipped with a CARBcertified diesel engine. That cost is estimated at $7,000 to $10,000, and this appears to be the only solution for now. CARB regulations are here to stay, so hopefully new technology will improve mileage range, life cycle and weight impact for electric buses or create new alternatives such as hydrogen power.

Looking ahead, Daimler Buses is focusing on crafting environmentally conscious and sustainable solutions for their product portfolio. This involves directing investments into enhancing fuel efficiency, clean vehicle technologies and the corresponding services. Remaining agile and aligning our product strategies with evolving environmental standards is crucial. This proactive approach ensures not only meeting customer expectations but also complying with regulatory requirements, fostering a responsible and forward-thinking business model in line with our ambitions for environmental responsibility and sustainability. WHAT TRENDS SHOULD MOTORCOACH OPERATORS BE PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS YEAR?
Motorcoach operators are navigating a dynamic landscape shaped by technological advancements and changing customer expectations. Embracing smart technology, operators integrate GPS tracking and safety-focused systems, enhancing both fleet management and passenger experiences. The industry is witnessing a significant shift towards sustainability, with a focus on eco-friendly practices. Prioritizing safety and security measures, operators implement advanced driver assistance systems protecting both drivers and passengers alike. Customer-centric strategies involve personalized experiences and constant feedback analysis. Adherence to regulations, market expansion, workforce development, and strategic collaborations further define the industry’s trajectory, ensuring resilience and adaptability in a rapidly evolving transportation environment.

With rising costs, management should analyze all aspects of their business: employees, equipment and customers. Don’t analyze your employees strictly as a cost – they are the way you make money. Invest in them, train them, and make them feel they are part of the team. Rolling stock should be analyzed based on return on investment, so understand every aspect of its cost. Then, when you know your true cost of operations, you can charge your customers a price that is a win-win. CELEBRATING 40 YEARS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11 Bruce E. Ebmeyer President Ebmeyer Charter and Tour Apple Valley, California
Scott Riccio CEO & President Northeast Charter & Tour Company Lewiston, Maine “My favorite EXPO was Jan. 20-24, 2013, in Orlando, when Peter Shelbo won the Vision award. I got to watch a close friend win the award that was well deserved. It was a memorable moment, in part, because he was wearing his infamous “red sweater.” Awards are an exciting part of the EXPO experience because you get to recognize people in your industry, and you have no idea who the committee has chosen to be a winner. EXPO has always been a fun place for me. As the EXPO chair since 2020, I love watching the largest, most effective motorcoach EXPO come together and to see what everyone’s getting from it. The goal is to bring Members to the event and give them tools so they can go home and apply them to their businesses and their employees.”
“We do get a lot out of the EXPOs, especially the Maintenance Interchange. What’s really nice is sharing information with other technicians and owners and figuring out that we’re not alone with these mechanical issues. We know that others have experienced what we’ve gone through. We also have created relationships with other technicians, and we’ve been able to help each other out over the phone and sometimes in person. They’ve even traveled to our facility to help us, saving us a lot of time and money. One of my best memories of the Interchange was the first one post-COVID in Orlando in 2021, where there were probably only 10 technicians in the room. We had very few opinions going around the room, so we were able to really get down to the nitty gritty and cover a lot of subjects. It really didn’t take a lot of people to make that so successful. It just took the right mindset.”

Jasmine Sayah Operations Manager Best Tours & Travel Fresno, California “My favorite EXPO was in Long Beach in 2022. I loved seeing everybody, from operators to vendors to OEMs, for the first time following what we thought was the worst thing that we could go through. Jeff Goldwasser had brought all of us together during the pandemic with the weekly Buses & Beer calls. The calls were about learning and laughter, not just about the industry, and getting to know people that you probably wouldn’t meet otherwise. We were supporting one another in a time where we didn’t know what was going to happen to our businesses.
When we all saw each other in Long Beach, it was hugs and high fives. I had really bonded with these people. It’s like we fast-forwarded friendships that would have taken 10 years to develop into a year. My first EXPO was in 2018 in San Antonio. It has been helpful having open communication and learning what operators are doing, not only in our state but across the United States and beyond.”
