By Ericson P. Europa, FUAP, PIEP Severe Tropical Storm Wipha, known locally as Typhoon Crising, was a strong and deadly tropical cyclone which hit the country in midJuly 2025. It triggered floods, damaged buildings, houses, roads, bridges and agricultural lands. The storm affected more than 9.5 million people, of which 193,000 were displaced and resulted in 40 fatalities. The National President’s Piece As we embark on this new fiscal year, the United Architects of the Philippines stands at a pivotal moment in our collective journey. It is a time to reaffirm our identity, our values, and our strategic direction.

Guided by the theme “Movers of Progress,” this administration envisions a UAP that is more responsive, innovative, and united in its mission to elevate the architectural profession and its impact on our communities.

This term is grounded on three fundamental pillars: Justice to the Profession, Visionary Initiatives, and Member Empowerment. We are committed to serving with purpose and leading with clarity.

As we move forward, we carry with us the hard-earned victories of the past, including the landmark Supreme Court ruling that rightfully affirmed architects as the sole stewards of architectural documents.

However, we recognize that justice must extend beyond the courtroom.

It must be felt in the everyday work of architects across the country. As we move forward, we will actively defend our laws, uphold the ethical standards of our practice, and ensure that the integrity of our profession is never compromised.

On September 10, 2025, the United Architects of the Philippines released an official statement on Integrity in Public Works.

As Movers of Progress, the UAP declares that we will: Champion transparency and accountability in the planning, procurement, and execution of public projects; uphold the highest ethical standards among architects and allied professionals; remain vigilant and actively engaged, asserting our participation in national, provincial, and local government initiatives to safeguard integrity in public works; collaborate with government, industry, and civil society to ensure ethical governance and responsible decision-making in the built environment.

The UAP is taking a stand for integrity in public works by actively participating in safeguard initiatives. Together, we are united in protecting public welfare.

Integrity is non-negotiable—it is the foundation of genuine progress and nation-building.

The Commission on Professional Practice embodies this commitment by finalizing updated ethical guidelines and tackling malpractice. The ₱ 1 Million Legal Support Fund directly supports this pillar, enabling litigation against illegal practitioners and safeguarding the integrity of our profession.

Equally important is our commitment to every member. True empowerment means no architect is left behind. We will work to make professional development more accessible, inclusive, and meaningful, primarily through stronger Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programs.

The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) is proud to announce its first-ever collaboration with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Hong Kong. This initiative, entitled “Archipelago and Metropolis: Design Dialogue between Hong Kong and the Philippines”, facilitates a design exchange between Hong Kong and Philippine architects.

Internationally, UAP proudly represented the Philippines at the 21st Asian Congrss of Architects in Incheon, South Korea. Architects representing Asia gathered to seek “A Better Tomorrow.” This landmark event featured distinguished international and local architects, offering diverse perspectives and expertise, as well as relevant professional 2

development opportunities for all members.

This administration is taking decisive steps in advancing the UAP Long-Range Plan 2025–2035, a strategic framework that aligns our mission with global excellence, national development, and professional relevance.

With renewed emphasis on the profession, the professional organization, and the professional product, we are committed to positioning Filipino architects at the forefront of innovation, public service, and cultural identity.

Under the Commission on Conventions, Assemblies, and Exhibits, preparations are well underway for two landmark events: the National Conference of Architects (NCA) 2025, to be held on October 23–25 in Bacolod City under the theme “SANDAG: Championing Justice to the Architectural Profession”, and NATCON 51 in April 2026. The NCA will coincide with Bacolod’s world-renowned MassKara Festival and will feature the first REGIONEX (Regional Trade Exhibition), linking professional development with industry collaboration.

Through our Executive Commissions and Task Forces—ranging from Professional Practice and Education to Communications, Heritage, and External Affairs—we are empowering every sector of the UAP to share in this vision. Leadership is no longer the sole responsibility of national officers. It must emerge from every chapter, every region, and every committee. Only through unity and shared accountability can we build a UAP that is inclusive, resilient, and forward-looking.

As Movers of Progress, we are called to lead with courage, compassion, and conviction. Together, let us build a stronger and more sustainable profession—one that inspires pride in every Filipino architect and brings meaningful transformation to the communities we serve.

The UAP Inaugural 2025: Architects as Movers of Progress

By Eia Melissa Cefre, UAP, RMP On June 29, 2025, the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) formally inducted its new officers during the UAP Inaugural 2025 held at the luxurious Solaire Resort North in Quezon City. This distinguished ceremony marked the official assumption of duties and responsibilities for the organization’s leadership for the Fiscal Year 2025–2026.

The event, which bannered the theme “Movers of Progress,” saw the formal turnover of authority from outgoing National President Donato Magcale to Architect Jonathan Manalad, who was sworn in as the thirty-first National President of the organization.

The inaugural likewise welcomed the other members of the National Board of Directors, Chapter Presidents, and Chairpersons of Standing and Special Committees, who all pledged their commitment to uphold the values and vision of UAP. Their leadership will guide the organization as it continues to foster professionalism, innovation, and social responsibility within the architectural community.

The event had Honorable Roman Romulo, Representative of the Lone District of Pasig, as guest of honor. For Congressman Romulo, it was “a great privilege to witness a milestone that represents not only a change in leadership but a reaffirmation of the architects’ collective mission to shape communities through design and to advance the architecture profession as a key driver of national progress.” He further underscored that the “country needs more professionals (architects) who design not just for aesthetics but for equity, safety, and community well-being.”

The UAP Inaugural 2025 was indeed a special and historic evening where attendees embraced Filipino heritage by wearing traditional Filipiniana and regional attire, lending a cultural richness and solemnity to the proceedings. The ceremony reflected not only a formal transition of leadership but also a renewed dedication to the principles that define UAP’s mission. It highlighted the importance of steadfast leadership in sustaining the organization’s growth and relevance.

As the new officers take their roles, they carry forward a legacy of service and excellence, poised to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead for Filipino architects and the communities they serve.

Honoring Excellence in Service

Formerly known as the Annual Presidential Recognition and Excellence Awards, this esteemed annual event honors members and chapters who have rendered exceptional service and demonstrated unwavering commitment to the organization, the architectural profession, and the community at large.

The Service Awards is an important occasion that gives recognition to those who have made significant contributions collectively and individually to the profession and the growth of our nation. It underscores UAP’s mission to highlight and reward exemplary service within the profession and the community, reinforcing its values of solidarity, innovation, and integrity.

This year’s awards recognized the outstanding contributions of the National Board of Directors for Fiscal Year 2024–2025, Chapter Presidents, as well as Chairpersons and

Vice Chairpersons of Standing and Special Committees. Their collective efforts have significantly advanced the goals of UAP, promoting excellence and ethical practice in architecture nationwide.

The ceremony was conducted in an intimate, by-invitation format, emphasizing the importance of recognizing individual and collective achievements. Guests observed a formal dress code, with gentlemen donning coats of various colors and ladies wearing elegant cocktail dresses, setting a dignified tone for the evening.

This occasion served as a reminder of the vital role that dedicated professionals play in shaping the architectural landscape of the Philippines. The UAP Service Awards 2025 not only celebrated past accomplishments of the previous fiscal year but also inspired continued dedication to the advancement of the profession and service to society.

The Service Awards 2025, spearheaded by Immediate Past National President Donato Magcale, was a big success in actualizing the organization’s commitment to excellence and the values it upholds. Giving recognition to architects and chapters honors their contribution to the society and the profession, underscoring the significant and diverse role that architecture plays in the world’s contemporary challenges.

As the organization moves forward, the UAP Service Awards will continue to serve as the benchmark for professional excellence and community involvement. It truly inspires architects to pursue innovative ideas that positively impact society at a local, national and international level.

Ma. Benita Regala: A Legacy of Compassion and Sustainable Planning

This commitment is reflected even in Arch. Beth’s personal pursuits. She is a lover of nature, fond of watercolor painting of flowers and birds, which reflects her commitment to environmental harmony.

Arch. Regala’s achievements have consistently raised the bar for environmental planning.

For Arch. Chua, this prestigious award will only push Arch. Beth further: “Receiving the prestigious recognition . . . would only continue to challenge and push herself more to come up with new ideas that would be most beneficial to people in any aspect, particularly our poor communities, and to continue to inspire others in being the best that they can be.”

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) has named UAP Past National President Ma. Benita “Beth” Regala as the 2025 Outstanding Professional of the Year in Environmental Planning. Architect Regala, who served as National President of the United Architects of the Philippines from 2014 to 2016, has been recognized by the PRC for her nearly four decades of exemplary service, particularly as a dedicated public servant and an advocate for inclusive, resilient communities. For those who have worked alongside her, like close ally Arch. Lucille Chua, the award is a testament to the core values Arch. Beth embodies.

“When I think about Arch. Beth’s professional demeanor,” Arch. Chua shares, “her key qualities are a person of integrity, high moral values, and a consummate and compassionate public servant who has genuine concern for others, especially the marginalized sector.”

Arch. Regala’s impact is visible through significant projects and groundbreaking policy work during her 39 years with the National Housing Authority (NHA). Her work consistently focused on masterplanning that carefully considered social, physical, and environmental factors.

One of her standout projects is the NBP Resettlement Project in Muntinlupa, now known as the Southville 3 Housing Project, which addressed critical environmental planning challenges to provide permanent housing for families affected by the North-Southrail Project. Similarly, she led the development of the Zamboanga 3Z3R House-on-Stilts for Indigenous Peoples, which tackled unique local planning hurdles in consultation with community stakeholders.

In policy, Arch. Beth spearheaded the Enhanced Community Approach for resettlement projects, which became the implementation strategy template for the government’s socialized housing program, leading to one of the NHA’s biggest production accomplishments. She also authored technical manuals like the Green Guide for Socialized Housing Projects and initiated the First Housing Design Conference in 2013 to establish disaster-resilient planning parameters.

Beyond her technical contributions, Arch. Regala has left a powerful mark on younger professionals. Arch. Chua describes her as a mentor whose selflessness in sharing knowledge is “noteworthy,” even after retirement, through her work as a Senior Lecturer at the University of the Philippines and a mentor in the Angat Sining Arkitektura Internship Program.

Arch. Chua’s initial impression of Arch. Beth as a “serious and strict ‘boss’” quickly evolved. “I discovered later that despite her seriousness when it comes to work, she was

Upon receiving news of the recognition, Arch. Rico shared that he was “pleasantly surprised” and grateful that his professional practice and expertise were acknowledged despite the rigorous criteria of the award.

Arch. Rico’s architectural journey has been shaped by several key influences. These includes Architect Noli Delos Reyes, who instilled in him the value of skill and practical design; Architect Ramon Zaragoza, who emphasized the significance of history and cultural preservation; and Secretary Jerry Acuzar, who honed his confidence in construction and decisionmaking.

A hallmark of Arch. Rico’s career is his advocacy for heritage conservation, which he describes as a defining factor that sets him apart. Among his notable works are the restoration of Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan, the White Cross Children’s Home, and the Hospicio de San Jose. These projects, he noted, are particularly meaningful because they allowed him to be of service to society while preserving cultural identity.

Throughout his practice, Arch. Rico has faced challenges, including the delicate balance between artistic expression and financial sustainability, as well as adapting to evolving technologies in design. Despite these, he continues to thrive and contribute to the advancement of architecture in the Philippines. Arch. Rico views the role of architects as central to community and nation-building, stating that “architects are whisperers of culture, and our creations over time are indicators of civilization.”

Looking ahead, Arch. Rico remains committed to heritage preservation. He is actively involved in the restoration of landmark structures such as the Manila Central Post Office, the Intendencia in Intramuros, and the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). Additionally, he is preparing to launch a Practical Conservation Class in partnership with UAP Del Pilar Bulacan Chapter, the Philippine Institute of Architects (PIA), National University (NU), and Boysen Paints.

Among the communities hardest hit by Typhoon Crising was San Mateo, Rizal.

The incessant rains caused massive flooding in low-lying and riverside areas of the municipality. The inundation displaced thousands of residents, who were forced to stay in evacuation centers. A total of 3,899 families, or 14,390 individuals, in San Mateo were affected by the onslaught of the typhoon. The impact was magnified due to the combined effects of Typhoon Crising and other weather events, including Tropical Storm Dante, Severe Tropical Storm Emong, and the enhanced southwest monsoon.

Hundreds of families comprising thousands of individuals have sought temporary refuge in evacuation shelters located in Maly Elementary School and Guinayang National High School. One major problem in these evacuation centers was the shortage of food and other essential items.

In response, the UAP College of Fellows (COF), headed by Chancellor Melencio Manalo, in partnership with Boysen Paints, came into action to address the situation through the “COF Cares: Malasakit ng College of Fellows sa Kalamidad.” On July 25, 2025, the COF extended assistance to the evacuees and stranded families temporarily housed in both schools by conducting a feeding program.

Spearheaded by COF member, Arch. Pedro Fetalvero, the architects distributed lunch packs and breakfast consisting of goto with chicken. Other COF members, Arch. Roger Victorino and Arch. Carol Victorino joined in the distribution of food packages. A total of more than 400 evacuees benefited from the activity.

Through this endeavor, the COF has demonstrated the architects’ show of compassion to the unfortunate victims of calamities. For Arch. Fetalvero, “By doing this, we are not only providing substance, but we are also bringing people together, fostering community, and showing love and care.”

When asked about the legacy he hopes to leave, Arch. Rico emphasized his desire to instill in future generations of architects the love for heritage structures. “All of our old buildings were once symbols of modernity. The greatest legacy I want to leave is the preservation of our built heritage—our shared masterpieces,” he said.

The UAP Del Pilar Bulacan Chapter extends its heartfelt congratulations to Architect Joel V. Rico for bringing honor to the chapter and to the architectural profession. His recognition by the PRC underscores the vital role of architects in safeguarding culture, shaping communities, and contributing to nation-building.

Movers of Progress Welcome to the initial issue of the UAP Post for FY 2025-2026. We, members of the Editorial Council, are thrilled to release the first of four issues that we will be bringing out this fiscal year. As in the preceding issue, this latest UAP Post comes in a newspaper format which is a departure from the long-established magazine format of the publication in the past.

This issue focuses on relevant events during the first three months of the current fiscal year, specifically the UAP Inaugural Ceremonies, UAP Service Awards, and recipients of the PRC Outstanding Professional of the Year Award. Moreover, highlights of relevant activities in the area, district, and chapter levels during the first quarter of the current fiscal year are also featured.

As an outset issue coinciding with newly-installed UAP National President Jonathan “Joey” Manalad’s first few months in office, this release of the UAP Post highlights the theme adopted by the UAP this fiscal year. “Movers of Progress” is quite timely and resonates aptly among the membership nowadays as we are at a time right now when the country is in the midst of political disunity, widespread corruption, and unfortunate natural disasters.

As NP Joey Manalad enjoined all architects, during his inaugural speech, “to reaffirm their commitment to be true movers of progress by moving forward with the spirit of collaboration, grounded by innovation and driven by service,” several districts and chapters responded positively to his call with their own initiatives. Some of these activities are documented in this issue.

The vision of the UAP National President’s administration is for the organization to be more responsive, innovative, and united in its mission to elevate the architectural profession and its impact on our communities. Fulfilling this vision will truly make the Filipino architects “Movers of Progress” and catalysts for national development.

Facing ‘The Big One’: Equipping Architects Against the Megaquake

Manuel, UAP On August 16, 2025, the UAP Diliman Chapter brought together 392 architects, students, and allied professionals—both onsite and online—for “The Big One” CPD seminar held at Benito Sy Pow Auditorium, College of Architecture, UP Diliman, Quezon City. This interdisciplinary forum was more than just a gathering. It was a rallying call to prepare for the looming threat of a major earthquake along the West Valley Fault.

Organized in partnership with the UP College of Architecture, UAP Regional District A4, and UAPSA Diliman, the seminar sought to arm participants with the latest knowledge, tools, and design strategies to build safer, more resilient communities. It wove together expertise in seismology, engineering, hospital safety, legal accountability, and postdisaster planning, echoing UAP’s mission to blend technical excellence with social responsibility and nation-building.

The forum began with an invocation by CPD Director Arch. Zita Hipolito, followed by an eye-opening earthquake response demonstration led by UPCA College Secretary Arch. Edra Belga, grounding the participants in practical realities. Hosted by Arch.

Dr. Arturo Daag (PHIVOLCS): “Overview of the Big One and Building Resilient Communities”— Unraveled the science behind the West Valley Fault, emphasizing how empowered communities can stand strong against nature’s fury.

Engr. John Arvin Manaloto: “Resilient Structures: Integrating Engineering to Architectural Design for Seismic Safety” — Underscored the unseen but vital role of soil investigation and interdisciplinary teamwork in erecting buildings that can weather seismic shocks.

Illuminated how architects shape the safety of hospitals through the DOH Hospital Safety Index, ensuring these lifelines remain operational when disaster strikes.

Bayanihang Arkitektura: A Meaningful Project for Aeta Community

Cadiz, UAP The Regional District A2b of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) conducted a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project named Bayanihang Arkitektura in Sitio Bethel, Barangay Maruglo, Capas, Tarlac. Held on June 5, 2025, the initiative was developed under the leadership of District A2b Director Simon Mangio, along with the dedicated chapter presidents of UAP District A2b, as a tribute to the late UAP Past National President Renato Heray.

The project was made possible through the generous contributions generated from the UAP District A2b’s successful golf tournament, “Let’s Swing @50,” held in May of this year. The funds raised from the event supported the development of an irrigation system aimed at benefiting the Aeta community in the area. This laudable undertaking was designed to enhance agricultural practices and promote sustainability, which are essential for improving the livelihood of the local residents.

During the visit of the architects, it was evident how impactful the project could be, as local community members expressed their appreciation and gratitude. The initiative received strong support from chapter leaders, volunteers, and participants of the golf tournament, whose invaluable contributions were vital to the realization of this worthwhile project.

Bayanihang Arkitektura serves as a testament to the positive outcomes that can result from collective efforts toward a common goal. Through projects like this, the UAP District A2b is working not only to improve infrastructure but also to foster a sense of hope and progress within the community.

UAP Del Pilar Bulacan Champions Skills Development in Partnership with TESDA

Lareza, UAP In a significant step toward professionalizing the construction labor force, UAP Del Pilar Bulacan Chapter proudly partnered with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Guiguinto in crafting the Competency Standards for Construction Worker/Laborer Level 1. This comprehensive manual sets the foundation for training and assessing entry-level construction workers nationwide.

Architects Ana Luzette Lareza and Robert Benedict Hermoso, respected members of UAP Del Pilar Bulacan, served as Technical Experts for Fiscal Year 2024 - 2025. Their participation highlighted the chapter’s commitment to nation-building through inclusive and standards-based skills development.

TESDA Guiguinto led the initiative with multi-sectoral collaboration, drawing expertise from business, industry, academe, and government agencies. The result was a meticulously- designed guide that defines the basic, common, and core competencies every construction laborer must possess to be recognized and certified by TESDA. UAP Del Pilar Bulacan Ka-Goyos contributed extensively to aligning the manual with real-world site requirements, ensuring that the identified skills reflect both residential

and industrial job demands. Ka-Goyos’ experiences and insights helped in shaping a curriculum that empowers workers not just with technical know-how, but with safety, efficiency, and adaptability in the field.

As movers of progress, the chapter believes that by raising the standards for even the most entry-level positions, the entire built environment benefits ensuring safer, more efficient, and more dignified working conditions.

UAP Del Pilar Bulacan further reinforced its capacity to continue to support TESDA construction related programs by attending the Hand Holding Program on the Capacity Building of Lead Facilitators in the Development of Capacity Standards Development, Competency Assessment Tools Development and Competency-Based Curriculum Development for the Luzon Cluster (CAR, Region I, II, III) held on June 23-27, 2025 in Baguio City.

The Competency Standards manual is now a valuable tool for training institutions, contractors, and aspiring laborers alike, setting a national benchmark for excellence in construction work.

Tarlac Kublahi Chapter Extends Help to Typhoon Victims

By Jelane Gay Espinosa-Chua, UAP The relentless rains and intense winds caused by the southwest monsoon and a series of typhoons experienced over Luzon in July this year have resulted in severe flooding in low-lying areas and river basins. The calamity has damaged local infrastructure and displaced thousands of families in Central Luzon.

The Tarlac Kublahi Chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines, headed by Chapter President Jelane Gay Espinosa-Chua, was quick to respond to the situation.

Despite experiencing personal struggles brought by the storm, members of the chapter felt the strong need to provide assistance to their affected kababayans in Tarlac. The chapter organized a donation drive called “Agtinnulong Tayo: Let’s Help Each Other.”

From July 25 to 28, 2025, the architects gathered essential items such as canned goods, bottled water, baby needs, medicine, clothing, blankets, hygiene products, and cash from various donors.

After repacking the donated goods, members of UAP Tarlac Kublahi set out to distribute the relief packs to typhoon-affected families on July 29, 2025. From the Camiling Municipal Hall in Camiling Tarlac, personnel from the Municipal Social Welfare and Development (MSWD) office guided the architects to the remote barangay of Sinilian 2nd, where the distribution of relief packs was conducted.

The residents were quiet and shy but their eyes spoke volumes of gratitude as they received the donated goods. What they received may seem small but it meant so much to them especially in those times of devastation caused by the typhoon.

The members of UAP Tarlac Kublahi did not stay long as the MSWD personnel warned that floods could rise quickly and they might get stranded. As they left the community, the residents waved and smiled. That moment touched the architects deeply, moving them to tears. Not only because they brought joy to others, but also because they realized how difficult life truly is for many.

District A2b Presidents Forge Path Forward in Benguet

Sangil, UAP Amidst the serene beauty of Good Morning Baguio Potting Shed in Itogon, Benguet, thirteen visionary chapter presidents from UAP District A2b gathered on July 18 to 20, 2025 for a transformative Team Building and Planning Program, with the theme “Shaping the Future, Leading the Way.” The event was led by the dedicated Regional District Director of A2b, Arch. Ricky Sangil, setting the tone for empowerment, unity, and collective action.

The program’s core objectives centered on strategic thinking, member empowerment, trustbuilding, communication, and decisive leadership. Through interactive workshops, reflective sessions, and collaborative planning, the participants reignited their drive to serve. A powerful “burst forth to soar high” spirit enveloped the group, elevating morale and reinforcing the deep purpose behind their roles as servant leaders.

A strategic planning session followed, led by District Director Sangil, focusing on corporate thrusts of the UAP National, regional collaboration, and member development.

UAP Cavite’s Greener Tomorrow: Drawing Blueprints, Planting Futures

UAP Cavite Chapter advocates environmental stewardship, sustainability, and community partnership.

On a sunny day of August 16, 2025, the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Cavite Chapter, in collaboration with UAPSA Cavite State University, participated in GreenVest 2025 at the PRRM Center in Silang, Cavite. The event was hosted by JCI Silang Cattleya and served as a convergence of advocates for environmental stewardship, sustainability, and community partnership.

The activity, aptly themed “Tree-D: Trees for Another 3 Decades,” was filled with purposeful engagements including tree planting, Earth talks and green business pitching. Together, these initiatives highlighted the interconnected roles of environmental awareness, community involvement and innovative solutions in securing a sustainable future.

Central to the program was the planting of kaong and lanzones seedlings, each tree symbolizing a collective responsibility to nurture the natural environment. For architects, future professionals and youth leaders alike, the act of planting went beyond ecological impact. It became a living testament to their commitment as stewards of both the built and natural worlds. More than just a reforestation effort, GreenVest 2025 became an avenue for dialogue, collaboration and shared learning.

Participants reflected on the importance of aligning professional practice and community action with environmental care. The event also underscored the vital role of partnerships, proving that when organizations work hand in hand, small actions can ripple into meaningful change.

Culminating the day’s endeavors were the 2nd Board of Directors Meeting and the 2nd General Membership Meeting of the Chapter where the convergence of leaders and members underscored the chapter’s goals to cultivate leadership, to uphold sustainability and to empower architects. In planting not just trees but also seeds of hope, UAP Cavite and its partners reaffirmed their mission to build a future that balances growth with sustainability. As the seedlings take root and flourish, so too will the vision of a greener, healthier and more resilient Cavite for the next three decades and truly, beyond today, they will reap what they sow.

Sa Mata ng Agbarog: Rediscovering Manila’s Architectural Heritage

By Adrian Michael C. Katipunan, UAP Agbarog, a deep Tagalog word for “Architect,” symbolizes the artist’s discerning eye, creative heart, and patriotic spirit. Etched in light and shadow, photographs that capture Manila’s architectural heritage through the lens of Filipino architects and architecture students, were powerfully showcased in “Sa Mata ng Agbarog: An Architectural Photography Competition and Exhibit.” Held on June 2, 2025, at Bulwagang Eulogio Rodriguez, Manila City Hall, the event raised awareness and appreciation of the preservation and revitalization of various historic buildings in Manila.

Following the initiative of UAP Manila Corinthian Chapter’s commitment to heritage conservation and architectural appreciation from its previous event, “The Manila City Hall and Clock Tower Tour,” the partnership with the Manila LGU and the Department of Tourism, Culture and Arts of Manila (DTCAM) was again strengthened as they celebrated National Heritage Month through this artistic gathering that highlighted the importance of heritage, design, and adaptive reuse focused on heritage buildings/ structures and sites in the City of Manila.

With the theme “Second Life Spaces: When Forgotten Structures Find New Purpose, and Stories are Retold Through the Lens,” the event was honored by esteemed guests from the local government – former Mayor Honey Lacuna, former Vice Mayor Yul Servo, Congressman Irwin Tieng, DTCAM Director Charlie Duñgo, past UAP National President Donato Magcale, and past Area B Vice President Mark Louie Soriquez. The exhibit was supported by Asian Coatings Philippines, Inc. (Rain or Shine) and Fenestram Corporation, with the generosity of chapter members: Arch. Alan Co, Arch. Martin Zamora, and Arch.

Bea Santos. Architects from UAP chapters across the country and architecture students from various universities were also in attendance. The event was made possible through the efforts of Arch. Froilan Robas and the Chapter Board of Directors who worked together in the spirit of bayanihan for art and profession.

Ultimately, the success of the event is a reflection of collaboration, creativity, and commitment of individuals with a strong leadership and advocacy towards the art of architecture, being measured not by the height of buildings but by the depth of understanding of one’s roots, immortalized in a photograph, seen through “Sa Mata ng Agbarog.”

UAP Legazpi Chapter Hosts LECONEX 2025

By Darryl Funelas, UAP The United Architects of the Philippines – Legazpi Chapter (UAPLC) hosted the Legazpi Conference & Exhibits (LECONEX) 2025, bringing together educators, learners, architects, allied professionals, exhibitors, and various participants of the industry for a valuable cycle of interaction. Held on August 21 to 23, 2025 at the Legazpi City Convention Center, Legazpi City, the three-day premier event carried the theme “Learn • Connect • Explore.”

LECONEX 2025 started with the ceremonial ribbon cutting and exhibit hall tour, where industry partners and product innovators unveiled their newest technologies, services, and solutions for architecture, design, and construction. During the opening rites, delegates and exhibitors listened to the moving words from LECONEX founder Arch.

Ranulfo Imperial, UAP National President Jonathan Manalad, and the highly esteemed guest speaker Legazpi City Mayor Hisham Ismail. Their messages highlighted the architects’ task of building a nation, the necessity of accepting innovation, and the benefit of cooperation in disciplines.

In the afternoon, delegates gained insights from experts on trends, tools, and practices in architecture and construction during the CPD Talks and Workshops. The day ended with a celebratory Mayor’s Night, an evening reception organized by the local government to greet delegates, solidify networks, and celebrate community bonds through music, cultural presentations, and camaraderie.

The second day focused more on technical sessions and industry campaigns. The exhibitors took center stage through video presentations, product demonstrations, and interactive sessions, enabling participants to interact with new technologies, building systems, green solutions, and innovative building materials firsthand.

The last day of LECONEX 2025 reinforced the learning and experience gained by the delegates over the previous two days. The day featured more CPD Talks and Workshops. The Open Forum served as a venue where participants can pose questions, exchange experiences, and reflect on issues in the industry. Such sharing of insights ensured that the event was not just about one-way knowledge transfer but also about communication and collaboration.

MATC Blows 7 Candles at Oriental-Inspired Gala

By Joseph Casas, UAP Just like a child turning seven—an age associated with growing independence and sharper cognitive skills—the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Makati Ayala Triangle Chapter (MATC) made its 7th Anniversary and Induction Ceremony truly special.

On July 19, 2025, MATC transported its guests to Japan without leaving Manila, brought to life by the enchanting interiors of Hotel Okura Manila. The theme “ALPAS: Likas na Kapatiran sa Panibagong Yugto” came alive in the Japanese-inspired venue, where serene interiors and elegant Oriental details reflected MATC’s vision of unity, growth, and a new chapter of solidarity.

The evening’s highlight was the ceremonial transfer of leadership. Outgoing Chapter President Joseph Casas formally passed responsibilities to incoming Chapter President Jharren Lopez, symbolizing seamless continuity of the chapter’s vision and values.

UAP National President Jonathan Manalad praised MATC’s consistency and innovation, noting the chapter “never fails to amaze.” Past National President Richard Garcia commended MATC’s strong camaraderie and mentorship culture.

In his valedictory address, Architect Casas reflected on his term, stating he was handing over “not just a position—but a legacy of connection, care, and courage.” He described MATC as “a home that allows its people to rest, heal, and return.”

Incoming Chapter President Lopez shared his vision for growth, aiming to help members “break free from the uncertainties… that have caged [them] from the potential [they] could become.” He also expressed gratitude to industry partners, recognized as cornerstones of MATC’s innovative programs supporting members’ professional growth.

As the night closed, MATC celebrated not just seven years, but a renewed spirit of unity and growth, stepping boldly into its next chapter of vision, connection, and purpose.

Re-Earth: Planting Hope for a Greener Future

By Marla Ibarra-Tapawan, UAP The United Architects of the Philippines – Makati Ayala Triangle Chapter holds four annual General Membership Meetings (GMMs), each centered on themes that are vital to the holistic growth of architects which are Personal, Industry, Community, and Environment. For its 28th GMM on July 5, 2025, the chapter focused on the Environment.

As the world develops at a high speed, it is no surprise that the natural environment is often neglected and left behind all in the name of progress. Forests are cleared, rivers are polluted, and cities expand. Yet architects must not remain passive. Their duty extends beyond aesthetics or function. It reaches into stewardship of the planet itself, for the sake of future generations.

This conviction inspired “GMM28: Re-Earth — Relearn. Rebuild. Reconnect.” It was not just an event, but an invitation to relearn the wisdom of the past, rebuild with nature as an ally, and reconnect with the people and places that give meaning to one’s work.

Held at MAKA Forest Villas in Alfonso, Cavite, the day began with a forest meditation.

Walking through the forest, the architects were introduced to diverse flora and fauna with healing properties. In those quiet moments, surrounded by nature, they could feel the regeneration taking place within themselves.

For the heart of the program, Arch. Ronnie Yumang, an advocate of regenerative design, gave a talk entitled “Balikha (Balik-Likha).” He reminded everyone that sustainability is no longer enough and what the world needs is regeneration. Following him, Mr. Rafael Dionisio, a change maker in sustainable development and mindful design, shared his deep passion for low-carbon construction. He discussed material choices and environmental awareness that can shape spaces leave lighter footprints while creating deeper impact.

After the talks, a tree planting activity was held together with Mr. Dionisio. This was to symbolize their re-commitment to the environment. The day continued with a rammed earth workshop, where the attendees were taught the step-by-step process in creating rammed earth blocks. From mixing soil to compacting it into form, they got a glimpse into this ancient method’s artistry and science.

But perhaps the deepest impact of Re-Earth was the wake-up call. The architects were reminded to always put the Environment first and to do everything in their power to preserve and maintain the natural environment. Re-Earth was more than a theme. It was also a challenge to see architecture as a covenant with nature.

Arkitektong Kabitenyo Prides a Palette of Purpose

Valero, UAP The spirit of community service came alive through the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative entitled “Pin(sel), Pin(tura), Pisara, Pen: A Daycare Repainting and Mural Painting for the Learning Chikiting.” Held at the Malagasang II-B Child Development Center (Daycare) in Imus City on July 11, 2025, this program was made possible through the joint efforts of architects from the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Cavite Chapter, graduate members of UAPGA Cavite and student members of UAPSA Cavite State University. “Pin Pin Pisara Pen” symbolizes the four key tools of early childhood learning: the brush (pinsel), the paint (pintura), the blackboard (pisara), and the pen (panulat), which reflects the value of nurturing both the creative and cognitive growth of our chikiting (children). The project centered on transforming the daycare facility into a brighter and more inspiring environment for its young learners.

Volunteers carried out both interior and exterior repainting, complemented by mural artworks designed to spark imagination and creativity among the children. The vibrant visuals and refreshed spaces reflected the power of architecture to extend beyond buildings, reaching into the everyday experiences of the community it serves. Adding a more personal touch to the activity, the volunteers also conducted interactive facepainting sessions, filling the children’s day with laughter, color, and play.

The program concluded with the distribution of snacks to the nursery students, ensuring that each child left not only with a renewed learning space but also with happy memories of care and connection. More than just a repainting project, “Pin Pin Pisara Pen” underscored the shared commitment of architects, graduates and students to harness their skills for meaningful impact. It embodied the belief that architecture is not confined to designing grand structures but also includes nurturing spaces that shape lives and communities. This initiative stands as a testament to the collaborative spirit of the architectural profession, where creativity meets compassion and service translates into lasting change.

Championing Architecture at PHILBEX Iloilo

By Nikolai B. Cabrera, UAP Innovation, collaboration, and community spirit took center stage at this year’s PHILBEX Iloilo, held on July 17 to 20, 2025 at the Iloilo Convention Center, Iloilo City. This event proved that the region’s design and construction industry is brimming with talent and forward – thinkers.

To kickstart the event, the organizer, Worldbex Services International, hosted a press conference a few days leading up to the grand opening. Influential personalities from the design and construction industry were gathered to highlight the expo’s purpose in bringing together the Ilonggo community.

Among the representatives was UAP Iloilo Chapter President Bonifacio Gutierrez Jr., who delivered a compelling message on the rapid and thoughtful development of Iloilo City in recent years. He emphasized that the recognition and inclusion of architects in key planning and design decisions have significantly contributed to the city’s wellplanned growth.

During the Trio Expo - PHILBEX, MAFBEX, and TFLEX, UAP Iloilo was granted a booth. The chapter, led by Arch. Gutierrez, promoted the chapter’s participation and seized the opportunity to showcase the vital functions and varied disciplines of the profession. Featuring a visual mosaic of past chapter events, the booth also offered a free architectural consultation clinic to interested attendees as part of UAP Iloilo’s commitment to public service.

This initiative was led by our chapter members: Arch. Faith Quiñon, Arch. Mary Sol Gianzon, and Arch. Joemarie Yao. The whole campaign was spearheaded by the chapter’s Director for Professional Practice Robemar Jaruda.

One of the event’s main highlights was the design competition titled: “Projeto 2025.”

Exceptional young designers from all over Western Visayas were challenged to propose innovative and sustainable design solutions in line with the theme: “Sustainnovation.”

Focusing on professional development and accountability, Arch. Jonah Cañeda discussed “Members’ Rights, Roles, and Responsibilities” and emphasized the importance of ethical practice through his talk on the “Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.” Her session reinforced the need for members to uphold the standards of the profession while actively engaging in the organization.

The seminar featured a series of comprehensive discussions led by distinguished speakers, beginning with Arch. Andres Abusman, who tackled the “Vision and Mission of UAP” and provided a “Historical Overview of the UAP Leyte Chapter.” His lecture highlighted the organization’s foundational goals and the chapter’s significant contributions to the profession throughout the years.

Meanwhile, Arch. Joel Jao encouraged active participation in organizational affairs through his session “How to Get Involved” and provided a clear explanation of “Resolution 02 Series of 2023-2024,” ensuring that members were informed of recent policies and updates affecting their chapter.

Arch. Richard Loso then presented an “Overview of the UAP National Organization,” shedding light on its nationwide reach and its role in uniting architects under one professional body.

The orientation served not only as an informative seminar but also as a platform to foster camaraderie among members. With its engaging discussions and practical insights, “Blueprint to Success” reaffirmed UAP Leyte Chapter’s commitment to cultivating wellinformed, ethical, and proactive architects in the region.

UAP District C1 Honors “50 Distinguished Architects”

Cabilao, FUAP It was a night full of nostalgia and honor when the United Architects of the Philippines Regional District C1, led by District Director Leartes Tabotabo, Jr., threw the confetti to its most illustrious members. The awarding ceremony of the “50 Distinguished Architects in UAP District C1” was held last June 20, 2025 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Lahug, Cebu City.

The event was organized to honor the notable architects of the district, who have made remarkable contributions to the architecture profession and the community especially within the Central Visayas region. It also served as a fitting spotlight on the influential leaders and prominent personalities, some of whom have already passed on, who helped strengthen the foundations of the professional organization through their selfless service and expertise.

Months prior to the event, the District C1 Council gathered nominees from the various UAP chapters for screening by a select jury composed of past and present UAP National Officers. The final list of fifty architects was composed of a myriad of built environment professionals, who made significant work in the community through the architectural design, design-build, construction & project management, education/academe and government service.

The awarding was witnessed by the supportive national leaders of the UAP including Vice President for Area C Joel Jao, Past Area C Vice President Rolan Paolo Alberto and Immediate Past Chancellor of the UAP College of Fellows James Jao. The event, which was part of the PhilConstruct 2025 exposition, was organized in line with the year-long 50th anniversary of the UAP.

By Jennifer Benedicto-Iral, UAP On June 25, 2025, the United Architects of the Philippines – Regional District C2 (UAP RD C-2) celebrated the close of a remarkable term with “UAP RDC-2: Pasalamat 2025, a Thanksgiving and District Council Meeting” held at the Business Inn, Lacson St., Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. This event was more than a routine meeting. It was a heartfelt tribute to fifty years of architectural excellence, leadership, and camaraderie.

Pasalamat 2025 unites District C2 Council of Officers, Committee Heads, Past District Directors, and incoming Chapter Presidents.

The gathering united the District C2 Council of Officers, Committee Heads, Past District Directors, and incoming Chapter Presidents, symbolizing the enduring spirit of service and leadership that has defined RDC-2. A highlight was the presentation of the UAP RDC-2: Pasalamat 2025 Distinction Award to Arch. Armando Guevarra, who has dedicated three decades of unwavering support to the district’s programs and initiatives, exemplifying commitment and excellence.

The evening’s keynote speaker, Arch. Ramiro “Chick” Garcia, a respected leader and pillar of the UAP Bacolod Chapter, delivered an inspiring address titled “Unity in the Next Fifty Years.” His message encouraged members to envision a future where architects continue to build communities with integrity, innovation, and unity.

UAP District C2 Director Jonathan M. Iral opened the event with a powerful message reflecting on UAP’s 50th Founding Anniversary, emphasizing the organization’s growth and resilience over five decades. The event also honored past and present leaders whose dedication has shaped RDC-2’s legacy.

With major sponsorship from Davies Paints Philippines, Pasalamat 2025 closed with a toast to the future and an optimism of enhanced unity, legacy, and hope within the district. Truly, UAP RDC-2 is ready to inspire the next generation of Filipino architects.

Brews & Viewpoints: Coffee, Camaraderie, & Conversations

At Bo’s Coffee Atria in Mandurriao, Iloilo City last August 30, 2025, it was not just espresso brewing. It was also promoting fresh perspectives and a renewed sense of community. This was the heart of Brews & Viewpoints, a UAP Iloilo Chapter initiative that ditched traditional meeting formats for open, meaningful conversations. Over cups of coffee, architects exchanged not just updates, but experiences, aspirations, and even a few confessions.

Chapter President Bonifacio Gutierrez, Jr. welcomed everyone and expressed his hope for deeper connections. Vice President for Programs Marian Gogil set the tone by kicking off the session with an introduction, encouraging attendees to share their interests and quickly turning them from professionals into people with stories.

Moderated by Arch. Antoine Geoffrey Coo, the discussion began with Arch. Reno Tillo sharing his personal experience on the builders’ side. Arch. Ryan Bedia highlighted the chapter’s involvement in promoting transparency through partnerships with government agencies.

Arch. Faith Quiñon stressed the importance of engaging with local government through CSO accreditation, reminding all that “architects are movers of progress.”

A pressing topic was the implementation of RA 9266, particularly the mandatory requirement of architectural permits in building applications. While some municipalities have fully adopted the regulation, others have not. Arch. Ludovico Fenequito, Jr. and Arch. Katherine Sulleza both touched on the dual role of architects as privileged professionals and as ethical stewards. They also addressed the concern of malpractice, wherein some practitioners misuse their authority. In response, Arch. Gil Japitana urged his peers to take the lead in educating local government units, stressing that proper enforcement starts with awareness.

On the topic of apprenticeship, Arch. Robemar Jaruda posed a compelling question: “Are you after the salary or the experience?” This prompted honest discussion on mentorship, growth, and self-worth.

UAP Iloilo Helps SOS Children’s Village

By Marie Nikolai B. Cabrera, UAP The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Iloilo Chapter has been actively supporting SOS Children’s Village Iloilo. Located in Zarraga, Iloilo City, the village is a shelter facility which provides orphaned and abandoned children with a loving family, home, and community in which to grow.

Recently, the chapter purchased the artworks created by the children and turned these creations into unique tokens for special guests during events. A child’s painting which was given to former Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas when the architects made a courtesy visit to him on June 26, 2025 was among these artworks. These art pieces were products of Art Jam, a much-anticipated event by the children of SOS Children’s Village Iloilo and spearheaded by UAP Iloilo Chapter in February of this year in celebration of Arts Month. Centered around the theme, “Think.Feel.Art,” Art Jam was not only about fun and skill development. It was also about emotion and healing.

The thirty children who participated poured their hearts onto the canvas, guided by the motivation of the volunteers and inspirational message of guest artist PG Zoluaga.

Zoluaga reminded everyone that art is a means to express one’s thoughts and feelings.

It is a way of communication which gives shape to ideas too complex for words.

Not only was Art Jam a means for the children to exercise their creative muscles. It also served a significant purpose in which each artwork became a platform for the children to tell their story. Aside from purchasing the paintings to raise funds for the children’s ongoing needs, UAP Iloilo’s support to SOS extends further beyond.

The chapter also linked SOS to Worldbex Services International and provided them with a free booth in the recently concluded trio event PHILBEX, AFBEX, and TLEX, held last July 20, 2025. This gave the organization an opportunity to extend its network.

Children are able to express their thoughts and feelings onto the canvas through Art Jam.

Four UAP District C1 Chapters Hold “Back To School” CSR Activity

Last June 9, 2025, a meaningful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative culminated in a turnover ceremony held at Tanke Elementary School in Talisay City. This joint effort was spearheaded by different District C1 chapters of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP), namely Rajah Humabon, Datu Lapu-Lapu, Sugbu, and Cebu Chapters.

The donation drive, aimed at supporting the needs of the school and its students, reflects UAP’s enduring commitment to serve beyond its professional scope. This initiative underscores the chapters’ shared belief in the power of collective support and the importance of uplifting local communities through meaningful outreach.

Chapter Presidents Carmel Lastimoso (UAP Cebu), Kristin Ducao (UAP Rajah Humabon), Buddy Ong (Datu Lapu Lapu) and Maegan Bugarin (UAP Sugbu) signed the Deed of Donation for 50 monoblock chairs, 12 medical kits, one foldable stretcher, 80 gallons of paint, painting kits and consumables, two pairs of radio walkie-talkies, and 190 coloring books. These items were carefully selected to enhance both the learning environment and the school’s preparedness in times of need.

This project was made possible through the support of generous partners, including Boysen Paints Philippines, whose sponsorship played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life.

Special thanks are extended to the teachers and staff of Tanke Elementary School for graciously welcoming the UAP chapters and allowing the organization to be part of such a meaningful cause. Gratitude is also due to the immediate past presidents of the four participating chapters for laying the groundwork and empowering the current board of officers to carry the CSR torch forward.

20th Mindanao Design and Construction Fair: Building on Legacy, Recalibrating for the Future

Labendia, UAP Marking two decades of excellence, the 20th Mindanao Design and Construction Fair (MDCF), held from June 27 to 29, 2025 at The Annex, SM City Davao in Davao City, stood as a powerful testament to the resilience and leadership of Mindanao’s design and construction community. Organized through the combined efforts of Arkiquest Davao Inc., PIA Davao Section, and UAP Davao Alpha, the fair has become more than just an annual gathering—it is a legacy. This year’s theme, “Recalibrate,” honored the fair’s history while challenging the industry to adapt to new opportunities and realities.

The final day highlighted PIASA activities and culminated in the Form Follows Fashion 2, where exhibitors’ products were transformed into wearable art, reinforcing their value in the industry.

As the fair celebrated its 20th year, “Recalibrate” stood not only as a theme but as a call to action—affirming Mindanao’s design and construction community as adaptive, resilient, and ready for tomorrow.

The fair opened with a vibrant ceremony where Arch. Daniel Terence Yu, President of PIA, graced the event with his presence, reflecting on its 20-year journey. The program also featured guest speaker Mikee Aportadera, who shared an inspiring message that set the tone for the days ahead. Soon after, the Design Talks began, with Architect Yu opening the segment before passing the floor to Arch.

Carrien Torreon-Tupas on resort management, Arch. Jessa Gomez on offshore opportunities, Arch. Dean Navarro Magdaraog on young practice and innovation, and Arch. Ryan Dennis Ortuoste on archipreneurship—together delivering diverse perspectives that embodied recalibration.

The second day featured CPD seminars, led by Dr. Rebecca R. Maquiling on taxation in practice and Arch. Iluminado Quinto Jr. on architectural acoustics. The day closed with the Fellowship Night and a Variety Show, blending learning with celebration.

Brigada Eskwela 2025: UAP North Davao Donates Paints to Public Schools

The 20th Mindanao Design and Construction Fair brings together nearly fifty exhibitors.

For the architects, finding time to be part of Brigada Eskwela 2025 was a way of helping the students as well as the teachers as the budget from the government for building maintenance and upkeep of surroundings has been deficient. Improving the facilities of the public schools is essential in order to maintain a good ambiance.

Having a conducive and wonderful learning environment not only encourages the students to go to school everyday but certainly to perform better and excel in their studies.

By Ayris Quelly Pecdaen, UAP The Brigada Eskwela or National Schools Maintenance Week is an annual program initiated by the Department of Education (DepEd) to prepare public schools for the new academic year. This week-long event involves the cleaning, repair, and beautification of school facilities. The initiative promotes the spirit of bayanihan by mobilizing stakeholders, like parents, local businesses, civic groups, and alumni to contribute time, resources, and skills to ensure that schools are safe, clean, and conducive to learning.

For this year, Brigada Eskwela 2025 was a five-day event which ran from June 9 to 13, 2025. As in the past years, it continued to encourage community collaboration and volunteerism through the theme “Sama-sama Para sa Bayang Bumabasa” (Together for a Nation of Readers).

In response to DepEd’s call for volunteers and stakeholders for work and resource generation to make public schools ready for the school year, UAP North Davao Chapter, headed by Chapter President Mark Judilla, partnered with Boysen Paints and visited various public schools in Tagum City and Davao de Oro on June 10, 2025 to take part in this annual event by donating painting tools and cans of paint.

The architects visited the following schools: Madaum Elementary School, Visayan Village Central Elementary School, and La Filipina National High School in Tagum City; and Nabunturan National Comprehensive High School in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro. The donation of paint materials was very much appreciated by the beneficiary public schools as many of their classrooms were badly in need of repainting and refurbishment.

Empowering Mothers: UAP Butuan Promotes Maternal Health through Buntis Congress

By Marivic Aboloc, UAP The United Architects of the Philippines - Butuan Chapter, in partnership with Rotary Club of Camp Panopio, Butuan City Health Office Obrero Main Health Center, and Butuan Doctors’ College BS Nursing Batch 1992, conducted a Buntis Congress (pregnant women’s congress) at Obrero Main Health Center, Brgy. Obrero, Butuan City on July 31, 2025.

A highly impactful project under Rotary’s Maternal and Child Health Area of Focus, the event addresses the root causes of maternal and child mortality by empowering mothers with knowledge, linking them to care programs, and building stronger community health systems. It exemplifies Rotary’s commitment to creating lasting change, one mother and child at a time, featuring lectures on pregnancy/maternal nutrition during the 1st 1000 days of life and oral health care for pregnant women.

The district took primary responsibility for coordination, securing parade number 101 and managing all logistical details to uphold the architectural profession’s integrity and dignity. Key efforts included uniform distribution, sponsorship support through Shera, post-parade lunch by Boysen Paints, and strict adherence to a 4:30 AM assembly at Velez-St. Agustin Streets, leading to a 6:00 AM parade start. These carefully planned arrangements highlighted the district’s commitment to professional excellence.

Demonstrating visionary initiatives, District D3 introduced innovative organizational methods that allowed five distinct parade lines representing all chapters in Cagayan de Oro (CDO) to march in unity toward Lim Ket Kai Center. Taala’s position as organizational marshal reinforced forward-thinking leadership, transforming the parade from a traditional event into a dynamic display of discipline and professionalism. Participant preparation—including pre-parade breakfast, hydration protocols, and behavioral guidelines—ensured seamless participation without delays, further enhancing the parade’s quality and public image.

This event powerfully showcased Member Empowerment as District D3 successfully mobilized multiple CDO chapters—Cagayan de Oro, CDO Gold, Metro Kagay-an, CDO Bay Area, and CDO Himologan—to collaborate and engage the community.

The district fostered inter-chapter cooperation, professional growth, and leadership development, elevating the visibility and contribution of architects in the Higalaay Festival. Together, these elements reinforced the unity of Justice for the Profession, Visionary Initiatives, and Member Empowerment in advancing UAP’s mission as true Movers of Progress in Cagayan de Oro and beyond.

The Higalaay Festival is an annual city-wide celebration in Cagayan de Oro City held every 28th day of August, to celebrate the feast day of St. Augustine – patron saint of the city.

The Buntis Congress is crucial for pregnant women as it provides essential health education and awareness, offering vital information on prenatal care, nutrition, mental health, and safe childbirth practices. It helps expectant mothers understand the Department of Health (DOH) programs and services available to them, such as immunizations, maternal checkups, and birthing assistance. Additionally, the assembly facilitates access to services by connecting pregnant women with local health professionals, midwives, and support groups, often including free consultations, check-ups, or referrals to health centers. It empowers women to take charge of their health and well-being during pregnancy while fostering a sense of community and solidarity among expectant mothers.

The involvement of the UAP Butuan Chapter highlights how architects can contribute beyond design by creating safe, inclusive spaces and supporting community development. Their participation reflects a commitment to social responsibility and nation-building, demonstrating that collaborations between professional organizations like UAP and government agencies like the DOH are powerful examples of multi-sectoral support for maternal health. This partnership is not just about building structures, but about building lives.

UAP Balladaw Dabaw Holds Medical Mission for IP Community

By Saturnino Bioc, Jr., UAP As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, the UAP Balladaw Dabaw Chapter, in partnership with the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Chamber of Real Estate and Builders’ Associations (CREBA) Davao City Chapter, and Healers Going Forth, conducted a Medical Mission in Barangay Ladian, Marilog District, Davao City on August 10, 2025.

The outreach program was aimed to provide essential healthcare services to the Matigsalug community in this far-flung barangay, whose residents do not have access to health facilities due to poverty and geographic isolation. The Matigsalug tribe is a prominent Indigenous Peoples (IP) group found in the highlands of northwestern Davao City.

Twenty members of UAP Balladaw Dabaw Chapter members, headed by Chapter President Saturnino Bioc, Jr., travelled several hours to the Matigsalug village in Barangay Ladian to undertake the medical mission. The architects, along with volunteer doctors, nurses, dentists, and other medical workers from partner organizations worked together for a successful collaboration in giving basic medical and dental services to the residents of the barangay. These services included pediatric examination, eye consultation, dental checkup, medicine distribution, free haircut among others.

For their part, UAP Balladaw Dabaw members donated some medical equipment like digital blood pressure monitors and weighing scales. They also assisted in managing the influx of people in the venue and facilitating the movement of patients availing the various services provided.

After the very successful medical outreach program, the architects went home proud of themselves feeling a great sense of fulfillment that they were able to provide assistance to their less fortunate brothers and sisters in the Davao City’s hinterlands badly in need of attention. Indeed, there is an urgent need to address the challenges that the Indigenous Peoples in underserved communities are facing especially those concerning their health, wellness, and means of livelihood.

For the beneficiaries, the medical mission was a great help to their community.

It allowed them to have general examinations and dental check-ups without the burden of paying for these services and the long travel of going to the nearest hospital.

The event featured engaging talks from notable speakers, including Mr. Jesus Christopher Salon with his lecture, “A Reservoir of Life and Heritage,” which explored the deep connection between architecture and cultural identity. Arch. Vergiller Gomez inspired the audience with “Empowering Communities through Heritage Stewardship,” focusing on preserving our architectural legacy through his work with Gabaldon Restoration in DepEd. Chapter President Aimeelou Jean Demetrio’s topic, “SDG: Built to Last,” highlighted sustainable development goals and durable design practices that covers the advocacy of heritage conservation.

Adding to the excitement was the launch of the Lantaw E-Zine and an exhibition on architecture, showcasing creative projects and innovations of CDO Bay Area members and other guest architects. The atmosphere buzzed with energy, camaraderie, and the shared goal of strengthening the professional folding of the chapter.

The evening concluded with heartfelt words of gratitude from Chapter Treasurer Romel Eltanal, which was read by District D3 Director Jiffer John Taala. Recognition was given to sponsors Boysen Paints and Panasonic, along with awarding notable CDO Bay Area architects. Closing remarks was delivered by Architect Taala, the incoming D3 Disrict Director. Nineteen participants took part in a hands-on learning experience during the Job Site Educational Tour on June 21 in Trenton, Ontario. On July 26, UAP-OCC installed its Board of Directors for FY 2025–2026, led by second termer Chapter President Elmer Canlas. The new Board aims to build upon the chapter’s accomplishments and advance its mission of professional excellence and community service.

Members swapped computers for rackets during the UAP-OCC Badminton Games on July 2, proving that fellowship thrives both on and off the court. Arch. Jennifer De VeraChiva led a “Seminar on Construction Contract Administration” on July 12. It drew 23 participants eager to expand their professional knowledge. Members enjoyed a weekend under the open skies during the Annual Camping 2025 on July 26 strengthening the sense of family within the chapter as members shared meals and laughter.

The Bike Fun Ride on August 9 had eleven attendees completing a 22-kilometer ride.

The activity celebrated endurance, team spirit, and friendship. On the same day, the Family and Friends Picnic was another unforgettable chapter moment with 72 attendees enjoying the food and camaraderie. Then on August 23, members revisited their Visual Tech classes during the Urban Sketching activity as they chased light and shadow with sketchbooks in hand.

The Annual Camping 2025 strengthens the sense of family within the chapter as members shared meals, stories, and laughter.

The UAP-OCC continues to nurture professional growth, celebrate Filipino culture, and strengthen the bonds that unite its members. The chapter eagerly looks ahead to more meaningful activities and initiatives that inspire, engage and bring its growing family closer together.

UAP Qatar Teams Up with AIA Middle East, Inducts Officers

The milestone event reflected the chapter’s unwavering commitment to advancing the architectural practice the smarter and sustainable way.

Themed “Architects at the Crossroads: Evolving Practice in a Smart and Sustainable World,” the event included a seminar featuring three of American Institute of Architects (AIA) Middle East finest architects as speakers, namely: • • •

Filipino Architects Take Oath in Abu Dhabi

Robuza, UAP Newly registered Filipino architects in Abu Dhabi were among the professionals who officially took their oath during the first-ever mass oath-taking ceremony held in the United Arab Emirates. Following the 2025 Special Professional Licensure Examinations (SPLE) conducted in June, the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) – Abu Dhabi Chapter proudly produced nine new architects, joining 450 other passers who were sworn in on August 23, 2025.

The new architects are: Arch. Louise Elaine C. Asis, Arch. Cassandra Mae C. Calderon, Arch. Maria Lourdes D. De Guzman, Arch. Paolo Luis S. Dela Peña, Arch. Vasria S. Lopito, Arch. Valentine P. Ramos III, Arch. Erwinson P. Verastigue, Arch. John Eric M. Viño, and Arch. Johnny L. Zabala Jr. The event was organized by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in collaboration with the Philippine Embassy in the UAE, Migrant Workers Office–Abu Dhabi, and the Philippine Professional Organization.

Right after the oath-taking, UAP Abu Dhabi held its Thanksgiving and Induction Ceremony at the Millennium Downtown Hotel in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates to honor the new architects for their perseverance and success. Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Alfonso Ferdinand Ver, who graced the event and served as the main guest of honor, urged the newly licensed professionals to give back to their homeland after reaching this milestone.

He also encouraged existing members and officers of UAP Abu Dhabi to guide the new passers in aligning their careers with their licenses, as some are currently employed in fields outside architecture.

This year’s passers, collectively known as “Batch Nara,” were led by Arch. Viño, who delivered an inspirational message recalling their shared sacrifices and triumphs.

“Almost 300 days of commitment. We sacrificed travels, personal plans, even switched off social media. All this while battling our own office wars—overworked, tired, and on the edge. But our dream was bigger. With faith in ourselves and in God—we were unbreakable,” he said, emphasizing that nothing worth having comes easy.

Meanwhile, Arch. Verastigue shared in his speech that age is not a hindrance to achieving dreams, sharing his journey after passing the licensure exams on his fourth try. “Matanda na ako pero hindi naging hadlang ‘yun para makuha ang lisensya na ‘to.

Naging inspirasyon pa ito para mas lalo akong magpursigi,” he continued.

The new architects also took their UAP oath of membership, signifying their commitment not only to the profession but also to the Filipino architectural community in the UAE and beyond.

Though separated by distance, the chapter remains united by purpose, connection, and shared joy.

In Western Australia on June 2, members gathered at Zone Bowling Rockingham, where friendly competition and supportive laughter created an atmosphere of teamwork and connection. The Darwin Team held a tennis event at CSC Darwin Tennis Court on June 7, reminding everyone that collaboration and encouragement can flourish even across the net.

The Queensland Team showcased energy and spirit through a lively badminton game on June 7, while the Canberra Team chose a business lunch on June 20, fostering meaningful conversations, professional insights, and stronger bonds around the table.

In Melbourne, members enjoyed a Karaoke Night at the residence of Arch. Rohnson Macalintal on June 22. Music, laughter, and shared performances filled the evening with warmth and genuine camaraderie. Meanwhile, the New South Wales Team hosted a winter barbeque at the Colebee Neighborhood Park on June 29, where home-cooked dishes and the stories behind them created a heartwarming sense of community.

Across the Tasman Sea, UAP members in New Zealand also joined the celebration. In Christchurch, members gathered at the historic Bridge of Remembrance for a “walk and talk” event on June 7, sharing stories and ideas along the Avon River. The Auckland Team embraced the same spirit at Silo Park, Wynyard Quarter on June 14, enjoying harbour views while exchanging experiences, career tips, and everyday reflections.

Elevate Your Game: Fast Break Architects

Dalida, UAP The United Architects of the Philippines Singapore Chapter (UAPSG) gathered last August 16, 2025 for an exciting basketball tryout and exhibition game held at Choa Chu Kang Primary School Hall, along Choa Chu Kang Ave 2, Singapore. The event brought members together not only to showcase skills on the court but also to highlight values of teamwork, discipline, and camaraderie that resonate deeply with the Filipino OFW community.

United in passion and camaraderie, the UAPSG Basketball Team celebrates together with ever-supportive friends after the game.

One of the main objectives of the activity was to strengthen the UAP Singapore Chapter Basketball Team that will officially represent the chapter in upcoming inter-organization tournaments.

From warm-ups to drills, the players gave their best while learning to trust and rely on one another. The energy was high, the cheers were loud, and the atmosphere reflected the strong bond of architects who, despite working in different firms and schedules, found common ground through sports. Basketball became more than just a game. It became a venue for building friendships, relieving stress, and reminding everyone of the importance of health and wellness while working overseas.

What stood out most was the spirit of unity. Individual efforts blended into a collective strength, proving that true victory goes beyond winning. It lies in supporting each other and growing together as one community.

The Sports Committee, led by Sports Committee Head for Basketball Arch. Randy Racelis, supported by other Sports Committee Heads Arch. Justine Jake Santiago and Arch. Roger Rino, extends heartfelt thanks to all who participated and supported the event. Special mention also goes to Chapter President, Arch. Maria Louretta Nico, for her unwavering support and encouragement in making the activity a success.

Appreciation as well to Arch. Carlo Calleja for the sweet gesture of awarding chocolates to the players. Refreshments of bread, bananas, and drinks after the game capped the night with true Filipino hospitality.

Indeed, moments like this remind us that being an OFW in Singapore is not just about hard work. It is also about keeping our culture of bayanihan alive, even through a simple game of basketball.

ARCHIBOWL 2025: Rebuilding Lives of Typhoon-Affected Filipinos

By Ramon C. Angel, UAP UAP Bahrain Chapter successfully held the ARCHIBOWL 2025 Tournament on August 29, 2025 at Funland Center in Manama, Bahrain. The event brought together architects, engineers, civic leaders, and Filipino community organizations in a spirited fundraising drive to extend support to the recent typhoon-victims in the Philippines.

Organized under the UAP’s Bayanihang Arkitektura program, the tournament showcased how architecture continues to expand its role beyond design and construction— becoming an instrument of socio-civic engagement and community service. The initiative reaffirmed UAP Bahrain Chapter’s dedication to humanitarian causes and nation-building.

The event carried the theme “Namnama” (“hope” in Ilocano), while the chapter adopted the word “Esperanza” (“hope” in Chavacano), to symbolize the universal call for resilience and solidarity. Combining the thrill of bowling with a deeper mission of disaster relief, the tournament embodied the bayanihan spirit of collective unity, camaraderie, and mutual assistance. It also provided a platform where established architects and young professionals worked side by side in advocacy, fellowship, and social responsibility.

The sports/fundraising campaign was spearheaded by UAP Bahrain Chapter President Ronan Paul Dayot, together with his dynamic team of officers. With their leadership, sponsorships and donations were mobilized effectively. Through the generosity of participants, partners, and organizations, ARCHIBOWL 2025 raised a substantial amount earmarked for relief agencies actively assisting typhoon-stricken communities in the Philippines through the UAP District A1a.

During the awards ceremony, team “Hey You!” (composed of members of the Knights of Rizal) emerged as the champion. The NBNEC Eagles Club secured first runner-up honors while Arch Inc., a well-known architectural & engineering consultancy, was second runner-up. All participating teams were commended for their dedication, enthusiasm, and wholehearted support.

The organizers expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the participating groups: UAP Team Puyog, UAP Team Bayanihan, PICPA Team, Pinay Ikaw Na!, Golden Petals Flowers & Chocolate, and other members of the wider Filipino community. Their collective efforts exemplify the core values of Bayanihang Arkitektura—solidarity, camaraderie, compassion, and civic engagement.

UAP Ontario in Motion: Summer Sports, Camaraderie, and Community!

Two of the most anticipated events of the season are the UAP Ontario Badminton Games and the Bike Fun Ride. Both activities are designed to promote health, camaraderie, and a strong sense of community among members. Whether one is a seasoned athlete or simply looking to have fun and get moving, these events offer something for everyone.

The Bike Fun Ride offers a scenic and refreshing journey through Ontario’s beautiful trails.

The UAP Ontario Badminton Games held last June 28, 2025, brought out the goodnatured spirit in the best way possible — friendly matches, exciting rallies, and a whole lot of cheers. It was an opportunity for members to connect beyond the drafting table, stretch their muscles, and enjoy a game that is as much about teamwork as it is about skill.

On the other hand, the annual Bike Fun Ride was held on August 9, 2025. It offered a scenic and refreshing journey through Ontario’s beautiful trails. It was not a race but rather it was a ride where conversations flowed as smoothly as the wheels turned.

With every pedal, members shared stories, laughter, and encouragement, building friendships along the way.

District C-2 Arkilympics UAP Cavite Aguinaldo 2025: A Fun-Filled Sentral Holds Celebration of Fellowship Thanksgiving and and Camaraderie Airsoft Fellowship

The United Architects of the Philippines Regional District C2 (UAP RDC-2) brought energy and excitement to its members as the district held its District Assembly Arkilympics 2025 last May 24, 2025.

The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Cavite Aguinaldo Sentral Chapter gathered once again for its 11th General Membership Meeting (GMM) and Thanksgiving Celebration on June 14, 2025, at Tishabet Field Airsoft, City of Imus, Cavite. With forty-four attendees composed of members and sponsors, the event turned into an unforgettable day of fellowship, competition and thanksgiving.

Held across the vibrant streets and various sporting venues in Bacolod City, the sports event marks a special occasion where camaraderie, sportsmanship, and the spirit of healthy competition brought together architects and students from across the region.

The five chapters of the district—UAP Bacolod, UAP Negrense, UAP Mt. Kanlaon, UAP Buglas Sur, and UAP Bacolod Azucar—participated and competed in various sports disciplines. These are zumba, bike ride, basketball, darts, chess, billiards, bowling, and badminton. The event also featured enthusiastic participation from UAP Student Auxiliary (UAPSA) La Consolacion College-Bacolod, UAP Graduate Auxiliary (UAPGA) Negros, and UAPSA Southland College of Kabankalan City, Inc. The whole-day event started with a fun bike ride from the Provincial Capitol, passing thru the main streets of Bacolod City then to the circumferential road leading to the Bacolod Government Center for a short pictorial and ending at Taytung Gymnasium, where the opening ceremonies was held. Past District Director Rogely Gambito-Lora said the opening prayer while Immediate Past District Director Jonathan Iral gave his welcome remarks. Past District Director Eric Santiago, District Committee Head on Sports, led the participants in reciting the Oath of Sportsmanship. After a Zumba dance workout, the actual sport competitions started. Bowling and billiards were held at Lopues East Bowling Center while the badminton games took place at Lopues South Badminton Center. Dart, chess, and basketball were played at Taytung Gymnasium.

The event was well supported by the architects in the district attracting 130 participants, with the active participation of the Negros Architects Basketball Club and the Architects Bowling Club – Negros.

The program kicked off at 9 o’clock in the morning as participants were divided into two mixed teams of members and sponsors for an exciting first-to-fifteen airsoft battle the whole morning. The field echoed with cheers and laughter as each team showed strategy, teamwork and determination.

By noon, everyone enjoyed a boodle fight lunch, sharing food and stories that strengthened bonds. Afterward, a short meeting was held to thank the sponsors, with certificate and tokens given in appreciation of their support throughout the year.

The afternoon saw the return of action with the much-anticipated epic final battle, where the last team standing emerged victorious. The friendly yet spirited matches created not only excitement but also lasting connections between members and sponsors.

More than just a fellowship, the airsoft event carried a special meaning. It was dedicated in memory of the late UAP Cavite Aguinaldo Sentral Chapter President Mark Arnel IgonIgon, who had envisioned this kind of activity for the chapter. By fulfilling his wish, the event became both a celebration of unity and a tribute to his legacy.

Thanks to the leadership of Arch. Cristopher Esteves, who stepped in as chapter president after Arch. Mark Arnel Igon-Igon’s sudden passing. The chapter was able to finish the term smoothly and uphold the vision of its late leader.

The day ended with smiles and laughter, reminding everyone that the true strength of the chapter is in its fellowship, service and solidarity.

The awarding ceremonies was held in the afternoon after the conclusion of the games.

This was followed by the closing remarks of Area C Vice President Gil Juesna to close the District Assembly Arkilympics 2025.

More than just a competition, the event was a day that allowed architects to relax, laugh, and build lasting friendships beyond the drafting table. The Arkilympics was generously supported by Boysen Paints and other industry partners. The organizers look forward to more fun games and bonding within the district next year.

Committee on Publications Joan S. De Leon Tabinas, MSc, ISD, UAP Executive Director, Professional Development Commission Arch. Tabinas is an educator, researcher, architect, and sustainability consultant who specializes in 360 degrees systemic thinking. She teaches architectural design (with a focus on systems integration), building energy modeling, building controls, and diagnostics.

Her dedication in the profession extends beyond individual projects, as she actively promotes awareness and action towards a greener future. With expertise in both design and education, Arch.

Tabinas plays a pivotal role in shaping a more sustainable built environment for generations to come.

Elda Shina S. Samoza, UAP Deputy Executive Director, PDC Arch. Elda Shina S. Samoza is a seasoned healthcare architect with over 30 years of experience. A UP Diliman alumna, she was Partner at Luis and Associates, contributing to private and government health projects. She consulted for DOH, helped develop PGH Diliman, and authored the DOH 250-Bed Hospital Standard Plans and Technical Guidelines. A respected subject matter expert on healthcare design and policies, she also serves the UAP QC Diliman Chapter in various roles. Currently, she is Deputy Executive Director of the UAP Professional Development Commission and Chair of its Committee on Scholarship and Training, advancing architectural education and professional growth nationwide.

Michaela Constantino, UAP Chair, Committee on Publications Michaela, an architect, urban planner, educator, and marketing manager, is passionate about purposeful design and effective communication. As Marketing Manager of FC Group of Companies, she leads branding and visual strategies for over 100 showrooms nationwide.

She also teaches at National University Manila, guiding future architects and environmental planners with a focus on sustainability, professional ethics, and place-based design. A former SK official in Barangay Tandang Sora, she continues to champion youth empowerment and education through community work.

A proud alumna of UP Diliman, Michaela was awarded the Dean’s Medallion for Academic Excellence in Urban and Regional Planning. As an active member of the United Architects of the Philippines, she contributes to national creatives and publications—bridging architecture, storytelling, and advocacy to inspire the next generation.

John Lemuel G. Llacuna, UAP Vice Chair, Committee on Publications Arch. John Lemuel Llacuna is an architect and architecture professor based in Quezon City. He teaches architectural design courses and continues to practice architecture through residential and institutional projects.

Beyond teaching and design, he finds writing as a meaningful way to express his thoughts about architecture and the built environment. For him, writing bridges the technical and human sides of architecture—allowing him to reflect on how spaces influence people and how design can tell stories beyond its physical form. Through writing, he explores the emotions, memories, and social connections that architecture can evoke, seeing it as both an art and a dialogue between the built world and the lives it shelters.

A past Chapter President of UAP Sugbo Chapter, he added another laurel on his head in the middle of this year, when he was awarded as one of the 50 Distinguished Architects of UAP Regional District C1, in line with the UAP’s 50th Founding Anniversary.

Aimeelou Jean Demetrio is a Cagayan de Oro-based architect, educator, and researcher with a decade of experience specializing in architectural science and urban heritage conservation.

She is currently a faculty member of the Architecture Department in the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP). As the president of the UAP Cagayan de Oro Bay Area Chapter, she led advocacies focused on green architecture and urban heritage conservation, strengthening community engagement and professional commitment to sustainability.

Guided by her passion for design and advocacy, she strives to create meaningful spaces and inspire others, with her family as her greatest source of strength and purpose.

and Urban Planner of the Mirazol + Mercado Design Consultants, formerly known as JRM Design Consultants, established in 2009. An advocate of green building architecture and sustainable urban design practices, he was awarded the most outstanding chapter president (local based – group 3) last FY 20212022 as the spearhead of UAP Las Piñas Chapter and being one of its founding core group members. A loving husband to his wife and fellow architect Juliet, and a Super Dad to Samantha and Jahren, he is a passionate writer, urban sketcher, water color artist, and plein air enthusiast.

Co-founder of HIIVE Philippines, she promotes green technologies addressing climate challenges. Guided by her philosophy, “Architecture through culture manifesting itself in geometry and structure,” she integrates cultural heritage and environmental innovation in her work.

Juesm or “Jusem” is a member of UAP Manila Centrum Chapter. He is currently a part of CMI for The UAP Post for almost three fiscal years and this serves as a step up for him to serve the profession.

At present, he is one of the planning architects of a developer group and also does freelance architectural work and consultancy.

Micah is a member of the United Architects of the Philippines Davao Chapter. She has served on the Graphics Committee for over two terms in her UAP Chapter.

Additionally, she is also a registered master plumber. Currently, Micah works remotely as a 3D Visualization Artist for a residential developer based in Las Vegas and also takes on freelance architectural projects. Beyond her work in architecture, Micah is also a graphic designer who enjoys conceptualizing logos and developing branding identities.

Eia is an active member of the UAP Diliman Chapter and a proud University of Santo Tomas alumna. Based in Alaminos, Pangasinan, she works as Design Supervisor at a firm specializing in design, construction, and project management. Leading a team of architectural apprentices, Eia values mentorship and teamwork, striving to be a leader who inspires through empathy and collaboration.

He loves to watch documentary movies, make artworks, read motivational books, and is a fan of Marvel movies.

Her hobbies include painting, architectural photography, and music. She also enjoys watching crime documentaries and movies during her free time.

Her passion for creating thoughtful, people-centered spaces is complemented by her love for writing— a pursuit she began in high school as the Managing Editor of their school publication.
