Sofia Coppola, in full Sofia Carmina Coppola, (born May 14, 1971, New York, New York, U.S.), American film director, producer, screenwriter, and fashion designer known best for her films The Virgin Suicides (1999) and Lost in Translation (2003). In 2004 Coppola was the first American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award in the category of best director.

Sofia Coppola is the daughter of film director Francis Ford Coppola and artist and documentary filmmaker Eleanor Coppola. She played small parts in her father’s films, often under the stage name “Domino Coppola.” In the early 1990s, she briefly studied painting at California Institute of the Arts and dabbled in modeling, photography, and fashion design. In 1994 she co-launched a fashion line in Japan called Milk Fed. In the late 1990s, she created her first films, two shorts: Bed, Bath, and Beyond (1996) and Lick the Star (1998). In 1999 her first feature film, The Virgin Suicides, was released.

Coppola’s next feature, Lost in Translation (2003)— which she wrote, directed, and produced—earned her an Academy Award for best original screenplay, a nomination for best picture, and a historic nomination for best director, the first American woman to receive that recognition. Coppola’s film portrayed the young 18th-century queen-to-be from a fresh, personal—rather than the standard historical— perspective. Though it was considered a stunning cinematic display (it won the Academy Award for best costumes), the movie was largely panned by critics for lacking depth.

SELECTED FILMS

THE VIRGIN SUICIDES (1999) Duration / 1 hr 37 min The Virgin Suicides is a 1993 debut novel by the American author Jeffrey Eugenides. The inspiration for the plot of the book came to Jeffrey Eugenides when his nephew’s teenage babysitter told him that she and her sisters had planned to commit suicide. Using a unique first-person plural point of view, a collective “we” that stands for several boys who grew up together in the book, Eugenides plumbs the depths of teenage lust and angst in suburban America, meditating on how the unfulfilled and unfathomable past continues to haunt. The narrators, now middle-aged adults, revisit what they know about the five Lisbon girls’ lives and deaths through their own memories and interviews with neighbors, tracking the destruction of a family over thirteen months, and exploring the lingering feelings of love and pain that have persisted for twenty years. As witnesses to the girls’ demise, incapable of preventing the suicides of all five sisters, the narrators find that the innocence of their childhood cannot be reclaimed.

LOST IN TRANSLATION (2003) Duration / 1 hr 42 min If you aren’t feeling very lonely right now, you very well may by the time you’ve finished reading this review. For it is the review of a movie that woos, romances and longs after loneliness. A movie that is capable of reaching down inside the most gregarious, convivial person in the world and drawing to the surface a kernel of desperate detachment.

Bob is an over-the-hill, middle-aged movie star who relies on his accumulated fame to keep him in the money through retirement. He’s in Tokyo to earn $2 million for shooting a whiskey commercial. Charlotte is a young college graduate, recently married and tagging along with her photographer husband on a business trip. Both wind up at the Park Hyatt Tokyo, with lots of time on their hands and no one to share it with. After 25 years, Bob’s marriage is shaky, suffering from his frequent absences.

After two years, Charlotte’s not sure who it is she married, or why. Both are tired. Bored. Lonely. And emotionally fragile. So when they meet, there’s an instant connection. Age and social status (or even marital status, for that matter) seem irrelevant as the two cradle drinks at the hotel bar, share lunches, midnight parties and 4 a.m. heart-to-hearts.

MARIE ANTOINETTE (2006) Duration / 2 hr 3 min When the Austrian-born Marie Antoinette is “handed off” at the tender age of 14 to the French aristocracy in an arranged political marriage to Prince Louis Auguste (soon to be King Louis XVI), she’s stripped of everything and everyone she holds dear. Repackaged as “fully French” so as not to offend the oh-so-delicate sensibilities of the Versailles court, she weds Louis in a grand ceremony. And then sees very little of him outside of their official appearances.

The two sleep in the same bed, but their marriage is not consummated for seven years, much to the despair of Antoinette’s mother and the chagrin of Louis’ father. An heir to the French throne is desperately desired, and when an arranged marriage such as this one fails to yield that precious son, then, the people of the land wonder, what was the point after all? When Marie becomes queen and begins to empty the country’s royal coffers on personal frivolities, the people stop whispering and wondering, and starting shouting for her head.

THE BLING RING (2013) Duration / 1 hr 30 min The Bling Ring features an ensemble cast, led by Katie Chang, Israel Broussard, Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, and Claire Julien. It is based on the 2010 Vanity Fair article “The Suspects Wore Louboutins” by Nancy Jo Sales, which dealt with a real-life gang known as the Bling Ring. The story follows a group of fame-obsessed teenagers who use the internet to track celebrities’ whereabouts in order to burglarize their homes. For generations, starry-eyed teens have indulged that hypothetical fantasy.

What would it feel like to wear a beloved star’s dresses? Or her jewelry?

Or her makeup and perfume? What would it be like to drive her sports car through the Hollywood hills? To live in a secluded, gated mansion?

For most teens—virtually all of them, actually—those questions never slip past the daydream stage that comes with paging through Us Weekly or watching Entertainment Tonight’s coverage of bling-bedazzled celebs on the red carpet.

THE BEGUILED (2016) Duration / 1 hr 33 min A sublime Virginia mansion houses the Miss Farnsworth Seminary for Young Ladies, its entryway flanked by towering oaks, its porch graced by ivory-white columns. Inside, a handful of girls and young women practice their French, work on their needlepoint and say their prayers.

It’s 1864 and the Civil War rages, nowhere fiercer than Virginia. A dozen major battles have been fought within its borders, the blood of thousands of soldiers soaking its soil. The school’s still open because the five students remaining there have nowhere else to go. Thanks to providence, the Confederate army or just plain dumb luck, the seminary’s remained almost untouched. True, some chickens got lost a while back. But it still has its cow, its garden, its students, its standards. The war rages beyond the trees, and the school stands as it has for a century— like a marbled memory, untouched by the baser, bloodier conflict beyond.

Most critiques of Francis Ford Coppola’s career interweave film criticism with biography and produce an account of a wasted genius, a failed wunderkind, a director who had a few great years, produced some magnificent movies, but slid further and further downhill as time passed. With the publication of this article, I am pleased to report that any and all announcements of Coppola’s artistic demise are not only premature, but flat-out wrong.

MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI

The films of Michelangelo Antonioni are aesthetically complex – critically stimulating though elusive in meaning. They are ambiguous works that pose difficult questions and resist simple conclusions.

Classical narrative causalities are dissolved in favour of expressive abstraction. Displaced dramatic action leads to the creation of a stasis occupied by vague feelings, moods and ideas. Confronted with hesitancy, the spectator is compelled to respond imaginatively and independent of the film. The frustration of this experience reflects that felt in the lives of Antonioni’s characters: unable to solve their own personal mysteries they often disappear, leave, submit or die.

The idea of abandonment is central to Antonioni’s formal structuring of people, objects, and ideas. He evades presences and emphasises related absences.

His films are as enigmatic as life: they show that the systematic organisation of reality is a process of individual mediation disturbed by a profound inability to act with certainty.

WONG KAR-WAI

Wong Kar-wai’s films are a feast for the senses and that feast starts with his usage of colours. The frames in each Wong Kar-wai film are infused with colours that evoke mood and emotions. He often uses both warm (red, yellow) and cool colours (green, blue and purple) to fill the frame. In the hands of Wong Karwai, these colours help set the mood for the scene which aided by the music turns a scene into a tender romantic moment, a melancholy feeling or something seductive. This video by Glass Distortion highlights the usage of rich colours in Wong Kar-wai’s cinema.

When needed, he has also shown his ability to drain all colour from the frame (Happy Together) to mirror the broken heart of the main character (Tony Chiu-Wai Leung) who fails to find anything interesting around him.

Fosse displayed enormous confidence and imagination as a first-time director adapting his Broadway musical Sweet Charity to the screen in 1969. While all the numbers are striking, the film emerged as too busy and full of gimmicky, self-conscious camera work. “Rich Man’s Frug,” a full chorus set piece that satirizes the then-current “discotechque chic” style and attitude remains true to its stage roots, but Fosse pulls out every cinematic trick to provide movement and variety. The camera rushes in and out on the dancers, frequently crashing into their faces, then zooming back out. Percussive movements, such as fighters’ punches, are aimed directly at the camera.

At the climax, the camera dives into the center of the dancers, adding special effects such as strobe lights, film negative exposures, and tinted color saturations.

The number ends, appropriately, with a zoom out to a full stage picture. In this number and others in Sweet Charity, Fosse was in search of a means to translate his style of stage movement into cinematic terms.

The film begins with the suicide attempt of the youngest sister, Cecilia, as she slits her wrist in a bath. The family therapist Dr. Horniker (Danny DeVito) suggests to Ronald and Sara and Cecilia may have a problem with feeling neglected and says that they should pay more attention to Cecilia and the rest of their children.

A few days later, Ronald and Sara throw a chaperoned party at their house which is intended to make Cecilia feel better.

Cecilia excuses herself and jumps out her second-floor bedroom window, dying when she impales herself on an iron fence. In the wake of her act, the Lisbon parents begin to watch over their daughters even more closely, further isolating the family from the community and heightening the air of mystery about the Lisbon family and what they are really about.

At the beginning of the new school year in the fall, Lux forms a secret relationship with Trip Fontaine (Josh Hartnett), the school heartthrob. Trip comes over one night to the Lisbon residence to watch television and persuades Mr. Lisbon to allow him to take Lux to the Homecoming Dance by promising to provide dates for the other sisters, to go as a group. Mr. Lisbon agrees as well as volunteers to be one of the chaperones.

After being crowned Homecoming Queen and King, Lux and Trip have sex on the football field. Lux falls asleep, and Trip abandons her immediately. Lux wakes up alone and has to take a taxi home.

Plot Summary / Bob, a 55 year old, looking bored, oblivious, is a still famous actor who comes to Tokyo to shoot a commercial for $2 million. As soon he arrives and is greeted by a bunch of smiling overly friendly Japanese crew, he gets a fax from his wife Lydia, 45 years old, reminding him that he forgot his son’s birthday.

The next morning, he spots Charlotte, 25 years old, in the elevator full of expressionless Japanese people. Bob, feeling totally oblivious, shoots a whiskey commercial.

Charlotte is accompanying her husband John, who is 30 years old and a constantly busy photographer, who doesn’t pay much attention to her. He goes to Tokyo to shoot for a few days. She feels sad, lost and alone in a luxurious hotel.

After a few days, Bob and Charlotte have a pleasant short conversation in a hotel bar. For the next few days they briefly meet, whether accidentally or on purpose. Their sympathy for one another grows.

The boys wander into the basement and discover Bonnie’s body hanging from the ceiling. Terrified, they rush upstairs only to stumble across the bodies of the remaining sisters. They had all killed themselves in an apparent suicide pact moments before: Therese took an overdose of sleeping pills; Mary stuck her head in the gas oven; and Lux left the car engine running in the sealed garage.

Charlotte invites Bob to join her and friends for a party. They all have a great time together. Their understanding of each other’s feelings deepens. Charlotte reveals to him her fear of not knowing what to do with her life, he tells her about the scary and troubling parts of his marriage. The young Dauphin himself is awkward and shy, and nervously meets his fiancée. His aunts, Victoire (Molly Shannon) and Sophie (Shirley Henderson) quietly discuss the new Dauphine, remarking that “she looks like a child,” and mocking her Austrian roots.

Additionally, her relationship with her husband remains as distant as ever. Their sex life is nonexistent, and Louis immerses himself in his hobby of studying locks and keys.

Devastated by the suicides of all their children, Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon quietly flee the neighborhood in the middle of the night, never to return. Mr. Lisbon calls a friend to sell off the family belongings, especially those belonging to the girls, in a yard sale; whatever didn’t sell was put in the trash, including the family photos, which the neighborhood boys kept as mementos of the mysterious girls. Soon after, a young couple from Boston purchases the Lisbon’s house. Seemingly unsure how to react, the adults in the community go about their lives as if nothing important happened. Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon were never seen or heard of again. People in the community to this day talk as if the Lisbon family never existed. The five dead girls forever remain a source of mystery and grief for the boys, who cannot forget them. The film ends with one of the boys acknowledging in voice-over that they will spend the rest of their lives trying to put together the unsolvable mystery of the Lisbon sisters and why they choose to commit suicide.

During this time, Lux begins to have anonymous sexual encounters on the roof of the house late at night; the boys watch from across the street. Finally, after months of confinement, the sisters leave a note for the boys, presumably asking for help to escape. When the boys arrive that night, they find Lux alone in the living room, smoking a cigarette. She invites them to wait for her sisters, while she goes to wait in the car. The boys briefly imagine the group of them driving blissfully away on a sun-soaked country road.

aThe court is rife with gossip, which is relayed to Marie Antoinette by the few courtiers who are warming up to her.

The King’s mistress, Madame du Barry (Asia Argento), is notorious for her crude manners and temper. She is hated by the court in general, who know that the King had found her at brothel and had given her a title of Comtesse in order to keep her at Versailles. The Dauphine is encouraged to shun her, but her adviser, Ambassador Mercy (Steve Coogan) warns that snubbing du Barry may put her at odds with the King, and that Marie Antoinette is already on thin ice due to her unproductive marriage. The Dauphine reluctantly engages in a one-sentence conversation with du Barry, which quells the scandal.

Marie Antoinette is delighted by a visit from her brother, the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II (Danny Huston). After a warm reunion, Joseph reveals that their mother had sent him to council King Louis about the mechanics of a sexual relationship (using the King’s hobby of locks and keys as an example). Soon afterward, the King and Queen consummate their marriage at long last. Marie Antoinette becomes pregnant and delivers a baby girl, Marie Therese, in December of 1778.

Though she would like to have a closer relationship with her daughter, it is not considered proper for the Queen to nurse the child herself. Louis presents her with the Petit Trianon, a private cottage and garden on the grounds of Versailles.

Marie Antoinette spends much time there with her friends and daughter, enjoying the peace and beauty of nature. After a party with friends, she enters into an affair with Count Fersen, who was in attendance. Despite this secret relationship, the Queen maintains an amiable relationship with her husband.

Over the next few years, France continues to subsidize the American Revolution by giving funds and troops to the new nation to help fight the British, despite the enormous expense. Food shortages grow more frequent, as do food riots in Paris. Marie Antoinette’s image with her subjects has completely deteriorated at this point. Her luxurious lifestyle and apparent callous indifference to the common people result in unflattering and obscene political cartoons in the local newspapers and earn her the title “Madame Déficit.”

Beginning to mature, she focuses less on her obligations as a socialite and more on her family, and tones down her opulent lifestyle, including a decision to stop purchasing diamonds.

A few months after her mother’s death in November 1780, Marie Antoinette gives birth to a boy, Louis-Joseph, the new Dauphin. Another year later, she gives birth to a second boy who dies in infancy.

In July 1789, the French Revolution comes into full fruition and an angry mob begins a march from Paris to Versailles. As most of the nobility flees the country, the royal family resolves to stay. The rioting sans-culottes reach the palace and the King and Queen are captured by the revolutionaries and are forced to leave the following morning. The film ends with the royal family’s transference from Versailles to the Tuileries for their semi-imprisonment. The last image is a shot of the Queen’s bedroom, destroyed by the mob.

It is noted in the final disclaimer that Louis XVI was executed by the revolutionaries in early 1793 and Marie Antoinette was also beheaded several months later that same year. With the French monarchy abolished, France then became a Republic.

The next day, Charlotte travels to Kyoto and Bob appears as a guest in a popular but meaningless Japanese show. Still desperate about his appearance in that show, he finds himself again in the hotel bar. Charlotte is not there. The singer from a hotel approaches him and the two have a brief affair.

Charlotte is disappointed about the affair the next day. They spend a terrible lunch together.

The last evening he admits that he wishes to stay in Tokyo with her. They both know their wish is just a romantic fantasy. They stay without words, holding each other’s hand, and kiss gently goodbye.

Before he leaves the next morning, he calls to see her again.

They say bye without a kiss, both embarrassed, not knowing exactly how to react. She walks away. On the way to the airport, he spots her from the car. He rushes toward her. They embrace warmly. He whispers to her. They kiss gently but passionately and say goodbye. He observes the city from the car, feeling happy.
