Andy Rooney

Adani Group AGM: Gautam Adani Denounces Hindenburg Report as Defamatory Campaign

Billionaire Gautam Adani, during the annual shareholders meeting of Adani Enterprises Ltd., declared that his conglomerate is stronger than ever, with record earnings, robust cash positions, and the lowest debt ratios in its history. He attributed this strength to the group's infrastructure focus, which positions it well to capitalize on India's anticipated infrastructure growth as the country aims to become a $10 trillion economy by 2032. Reflecting on the past year's challenges, Adani addressed the severe crisis sparked by a report from US short seller Hindenburg Research. The report accused the Adani Group of stock manipulation, accounting fraud, inflating valuations, siphoning funds, and creating a complex network of shell companies to flout regulatory norms. Despite denying these allegations, the group's market value plummeted by $150 billion. Adani claimed the accusations were a strategic attack on their financial integrity and reputation, compounded by media amplification, which they countered by returning proceeds from a significant public offer.

VW to Invest up to $5BN in Tesla Rival

Rivian

Volkswagen (VW), the German automotive giant, has announced an investment of up to $5 billion (£3.94 billion) in Rivian, a competitor to Tesla. This partnership forms a joint venture allowing both VW and the US-based electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer to share technology. Following the announcement, Rivian's stock surged nearly 50%. The collaboration comes amid increasing competition among EV manufacturers and the imposition of tariffs on Chinese imports by Western nations. VW will start with an initial $1 billion investment in Rivian, with an additional $4 billion planned by 2026. Founded in 2009, Rivian has yet to achieve a quarterly profit, reporting a net loss of over $1.4 billion in the first quarter of 2024. VW, facing pressure from competitors like Tesla and China's BYD, is working to transition from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to EVs.

Heiress Marlene Engelhorn

Distributes

Inherited Millions to 77 Organizations

Acitizens' group has decided how to distribute the fortune of Marlene Engelhorn, an Austro-German heiress. Earlier this year, Engelhorn established a panel of 50 individuals to determine how to allocate the millions she inherited from her grandmother. The funds will benefit 77 organizations, including social and climate groups, as well as notable left-wing entities. Marlene Engelhorn, 32, gained attention in January for announcing her intention to donate €25 million (£21 million), the majority of her inheritance. As a descendant of Friedrich Engelhorn, the founder of the German chemical and pharmaceutical giant BASF, Engelhorn is a vocal proponent of wealth redistribution. She selected a panel, chosen by a pollster to reflect Austrian society, to decide the fate of her inheritance. From March to June, the group convened over six weekends in Salzburg to devise a plan for the money.

Florence Elects First Woman Mayor

Florence has elected its first female mayor, Sara Funaro, who decisively defeated her right-wing opponent. A local councillor from the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), Funaro secured governance of the Italian city with over 60% of the vote. Her opponent, Eike Schmidt, a former director of Florence's Uffizi Gallery and a candidate backed by Italy's far-right coalition government, garnered 39%. This election concluded a series of votes in which centre-left parties claimed victories in five regional capitals. As the vote count progressed, Funaro expressed her excitement and dedicated her victory to her grandfather, Piero Bargellini, known for his leadership during the 1966 Florence flood. Despite his loss, Schmidt, a political newcomer born in Germany, stated that his campaign performed well and remained optimistic. Funaro's win is part of a broader success for Italy's centre-left alliance, led by the PD.

Nothing Short of Wondrous: Arun K Chittilappilly & Wonderla’s Evolution

Wonderla Holidays Ltd is a wonderful marvel of sorts in India’s amusement park industry. What started as a simple idea has transformed into a nationwide sensation, featuring attractions like India’s first reverse-looping roller coaster and the unique spinning roller coaster. And the driving force behind this success saga is none other than Arun K Chittilappilly, who is proudly carrying the baton inherited from his illustrious father, Kochouseph Chittilappilly, in the entrepreneurial race. In a tete-a-tete with Unique Times, Arun opens up about Wonderla's journey, strategic expansions and ambitious projects that are set to redefine the amusement park landscape in the country. With a glimpse into future plans and an unwavering dedication to creating memorable experiences, this conversation offers an engaging look at Wonderla’s evolution and its exciting path forward. What initially sparked your interest in amusement parks and resort management?

My interest in amusement parks and resort management began at a young age, fuelled by visits to amusement parks worldwide. Though each visit was thrilling, it highlighted a lacuna in what India had to offer. The vibrant, immersive experiences we enjoyed abroad were missing back home. This sparked a desire to bring world-class amusement parks to our country. Initiated as a fun project by my father, we aimed to create a place that would bring joy and excitement to families, similar to our international experiences. This passion germinated into a project only

to become a successful venture soon. It is driven by our commitment to offer unparalleled amusement experiences. Today, Wonderla stands as a testament to that vision, providing countless joyful memories and unmatched experiences to our visitors. Share with us a memorable moment or achievement in your career with Wonderla. There have been so many memorable moments throughout my journey with Wonderla that it is hard to pick just one. One that truly stands out is our Initial Public Offering (IPO) in 2014. Raising Rs 180 crore was a significant milestone for us. There was a lot of scepticism surrounding a relatively small company like Wonderla going public. Many doubted our ability to succeed in such a venture, but we were determined to prove them wrong. The successful IPO was a testament to our hard work, vision, and the faith of our stakeholders.

Another proud achievement is the remarkable growth we've witnessed over the years. From humble beginnings, we've expanded to four parks in Kochi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and now Bhubaneswar. Additionally, we have a resort in Bengaluru. Seeing Wonderla grow and bring joy to millions of visitors has been incredibly fulfilling. Each park represents a dream turned into reality, and the smiles on our visitors' faces make all the effort worthwhile. How would you describe the unique attractions awaiting visitors at Wonderla parks?

At Wonderla, our goal is to create unforgettable memories for every visitor. Featuring custom-made rides from top international suppliers, we offer experiences unmatched in In-

dia. Our parks boast a mix of thrilling rides, like Recoil, India’s first and only reverse-looping roller coaster, and fun water attractions like Rain Disco, Wonder Splash, and Wave Pools. Our latest park in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, showcases the country’s only spinning roller coaster, and we consistently introduce unique offerings at each of our parks.

What makes Wonderla special is our unwavering attention to safety and hygiene, ensuring families can enjoy sans worries. Each park reflects its regional culture, adding a unique touch to your visit—whether it’s the serene atmosphere in Kochi or the vibrant energy in Bengaluru, every Wonderla park has its charm. For me, seeing families and friends come together, laugh, and create lasting memories is what makes Wonderla truly special. Ultimately, our goal is to create a place where families can bond, friends can laugh, and everyone leaves with cherished memories. That's what drives us every day at Wonderla. Regular inspections, thorough training programmes for our team members, and continuous improvement initiatives are integral parts of our approach. We prioritise safety and stringent maintenance to ensure every visitor enjoys a hassle-free

With over 20 years of experience in this industry, I can say that starting a theme park or resort is a thrilling yet challenging journey requiring a deep understanding of its nuances. This industry is operationally intensive, blending engineering precision with creative marketing strategies. Investing in a passionate and skilled team is essential. They are the backbone, ensuring safety, maintaining high standards, and creating unforgettable experiences for our guests.

My advice is to embrace the challenges with passion and meticulous planning. Each decision should reflect a commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction. Remember, success in this industry hinges on your team—they are your greatest asset in turning your vision into reality.

How do you balance innovation and maintaining the charm and appeal of traditional amusement park experiences?

Balancing innovation with the timeless charm of traditional amusement park experiences is essential for Wonderla. We deeply value cus-

tomer feedback and data insights, grounding all our decisions in detailed research. For instance, classic rides like Wonder Splash and Crazy Cars remain popular among visitors. Introducing innovative experiences such as VR attractions allows us to cater to evolving guest preferences and expectations.

For us, innovation isn't about replacing tradition but enhancing it. It's about finding new ways to surprise and delight our guests while maintaining the nostalgic essence that makes Wonderla special. By blending the best of both worlds— classic favourites and cutting-edge innovations—we ensure that every visit to Wonderla is a mix of cherished memories and exciting new adventures.

What role do customer feedback and reviews play in shaping improvements at Wonderla?

Customer feedback is the bedrock of our improvement efforts. We place immense value on insights gathered through tools like Net Promoter Score (NPS) and 360-degree feedback. Every piece of feedback is a catalyst for positive change, guiding us in understanding what our

guests appreciate and where we can make enhancements.

Whether it's refining ride experiences, elevating service standards, or introducing new attractions, customer input is pivotal in shaping our decisions. Our commitment to delivering exceptional experiences is deeply rooted in listening to our guests. Their feedback drives our continuous improvement and ensures that Wonderla remains a place where every visit is memorable and exceeds expectations.

The team behind Wonderla is incredibly diverse and dynamic, representing a wealth of talent and expertise. Our growing Engineering team has developed an impressive portfolio of over 60 in-house rides, both land and water, to thrill and delight our guests. Our team's collaborative efforts span engineering, design, operations, marketing, and guest relations. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that every new attraction meets and exceeds our rigorous standards of safety, quality, and guest satisfaction. At Wonderla, we believe our diverse team is our greatest strength. Together, we're dedicated to crafting unforgettable experiences that captivate and thrill our visitors, making every visit to Wonderla a journey of excitement and joy.

How do you see the future of amusement parks in India over the next decade?

The future of amusement parks in India over the next decade is poised for an exciting evolution, particularly in tier 2 cities. With over 125 districts housing populations of

over 3 million and only 15-20 major amusement parks attracting more than 0.5 million visitors annually, the sector has significant growth potential. Key drivers include rising per capita income, favourable demographics, limited alternatives for outdoor entertainment, and evolving lifestyles. Millennials, in particular, prioritise spending on experiences over material possessions, a trend amplified by social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook.

In response, amusement parks are set to evolve by blending tradition with innovation, offering technologically advanced rides, immersive experiences, and themed attractions catering to diverse interests and preferences. The focus will be on creating memorable experiences that resonate with visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Wonderla is committed to leading this evolution

by continuously innovating and expanding our offerings across India's vibrant cities, setting new standards in entertainment and hospitality to ensure every visit is both enjoyable and enriching. What inspired the decision to expand Wonderla to multiple locations?

Wonderla's decision to expand to multiple locations across India is driven by our strategic vision to capitalise on the burgeoning amusement park industry in the country while mitigating risks and maximising our reach. The Indian amusement park sector is experiencing rapid growth, fuelled by increasing disposable incomes and urbanisation trends. Recognising this opportunity, we aimed to tap into diverse regional markets by opening parks in new locations, allowing us to cater to a broader cus-

tomer base and tailor our offerings to meet specific demographics and preferences unique to each region.

Our initial expansions proved successful, revealing a significant demand for quality amusement options and identifying a gap in the market that Wonderla could effectively fill. This success made us more ambitious, seeing immense potential in providing top-tier amusement experiences where they were lacking. This strategy not only enhances our brand presence but also enriches the leisure options available to Indian families across different cities. How do you ensure that Wonderla parks cater to a diverse range of visitors, from families to thrillseekers?

At Wonderla, we ensure that there's something for everyone. Our parks feature a variety of attractions, from high-adrenaline roller coasters for thrill-seekers to gentle rides and water play areas for kids and families. We also offer practical amenities like prams on rent and designated family pools to make visits more convenient and enjoyable. This way, whether you're a family looking for a fun day out or an adventure enthusiast seeking excitement, Wonderla has you covered.

What are some of the key factors you consider when designing new attractions?

When designing new attractions for Wonderla parks, we carefully consider several factors to ensure an exceptional guest experience. We prioritise the thrill and novelty of the attraction, aiming to introduce exciting and innovative experiences, especially those new to India. Safety is paramount, with each attraction undergoing rigorous testing and adhering to international safety standards to guarantee guest well-being. Additionally, we focus on creating attractions that are easy to maintain, minimising downtime and ensuring continuous operation. By integrating excitement, novelty, safety, and maintenance efficiency, we strive to deliver rides and experiences that not only thrill but also exceed the expectations of our visitors.

How does Wonderla stay ahead in the amusement park industry—from staying informed about trends to generating ideas for new rides?

Wonderla maintains its bellwether position in the amusement park industry through a proactive approach to staying informed and innovative. We actively engage with industry bodies and participate in global forums to keep abreast of the latest trends and best practices. By visiting parks around the world, we gain firsthand insights into emerging attractions and visitor experiences, which help us anticipate and adapt to industry shifts.

Ideas for new rides at Wonderla are inspired by a combination of extensive travel experiences and rigorous research. We immerse ourselves in diverse amusement park environments globally, studying market demands, consumer preferences, and advancements in technology. This comprehensive approach enables us to conceptualise and develop rides that not only thrill but also exceed guest expectations, ensuring Wonderla remains a leader in delivering cutting-edge and memorable experiences for all visitors.

Can you discuss any upcoming projects? Are there any plans to expand Wonderla amusement parks outside India?

We're currently focused on expanding within India, particularly in tier-II cities where we see great potential. Discussions with several state governments for potential partnerships are underway, involving land acquisition and incentives to develop tourist attractions that benefit local communities. Our priority is expanding in cities with feasible land costs and efficient project execution. We're particularly enthusiastic about our upcoming project in Chennai. Slated to be our largest park yet, it is scheduled to open in the second quarter of FY26.

As for international expansion, while it's on our radar for the future, our current dedication is to delight guests right here in India with un-

forgettable experiences at Wonderla parks. We believe in growing strategically and ensuring each new venture maintains our high standards of innovation, safety, and guest satisfaction.

Your father, Kochouseph Chittilappilly, is a wellknown business magnate and philanthropist. How has his entrepreneurial journey influenced your career path?

My father has profoundly influenced generations in Kerala through his entrepreneurial spirit and vision to build large-scale businesses, which have deeply inspired both me and my brother. Growing up in this environment, I learned the value of innovation, perseverance, and creating meaningful opportunities. His belief in India's vast potential resonates strongly with me; he often reminds us that despite not being a first-world country, India offers immense opportunities, particularly in sectors like ours. His guidance has shaped my business approach, emphasising pioneering new offerings that enrich lives and contribute positively to the economy.

In essence, my father's journey has instilled in me a passion for excellence and a commitment to continuous growth and innovation in the amusement park industry. I am dedicated to building on his legacy by expanding Wonderla's footprint and delivering exceptional experiences to our guests across India.

Could you tell us about Wonderla Holidays and how it complements the overall experience offered by Wonderla amusement parks and resorts?

Wonderla Bengaluru Resort stands as India's pioneering luxury resort, uniquely complemented by its proximity to Wonderla Amusement Park. It offers state-of-the-art banquet facilities spanning 8,300 sq.ft indoors and 25,000 sq.ft. outdoors, perfect for events, weddings, and gatherings. Nestled amidst lush greenery, the resort provides ample space for outdoor activities like cycling, lawn games, and jogging,

alongside culinary delights at Woods multi-cuisine restaurant and relaxation at the Swimup Bar By The Pool. With amenities like a temperaturecontrolled pool and the Caribbean Whirlwater ride, Wonderla Bengaluru Resort ensures a rejuvenating retreat for all guests.

Beyond enhancing guest satisfaction, the resort significantly contributes to our revenue strategy, particularly through non-ticket revenue (NTR) from events, corporate functions, and leisure retreats. This approach maximises guest engagement and enriches their overall leisure experience. Looking ahead, we aim to replicate and expand the resort concept to other locations, integrating it seamlessly into the Wonderla brand to ensure every guest enjoys a comprehensive and enjoyable leisure experience across our properties.

What inspired Wonderla Holidays to venture into the food delivery business during the pandemic?

We saw an opportunity to bring a taste of Wonderla's hospitality directly to our guests' homes during challenging times. Venturing into the food delivery business was a natural extension for us, leveraging our expertise in food and beverage services. It was a way for us to stay connected with our patrons and provide them with a slice of the Wonderla experience, even when they couldn't visit our parks. Plus, it was a bit of fun for us to explore new avenues and adapt to the changing circumstances.

How has your family influenced your approach to business and leadership?

Both my parents have profound-

ly shaped my perspective on business and leadership through their successful entrepreneurial journey. Their guidance has emphasised the importance of ethical business practices, cultivating a strong team, and exercising financial prudence, which I hold dear. Growing up in this environment has instilled in me a deep respect for integrity and a commitment to excellence. These values are central to every decision I make at Wonderla, where sustainability, innovation, and the well-being of our team and stakeholders are top priorities.

Their legacy continues to inspire me to innovate continuously and uphold the high standards they have set. I am dedicated to fostering a business environment at Wonderla where everyone can thrive, contribute meaningfully, and share in our collective success

The median age of the population of the country as of 2022 was 28 years, while it was 37 in China and the United States, 45 in Western Europe, and 49 in Japan

How to Reap Demographic Dividend?

Recalibrating industrial policy and transitioning to a manufacturing economy is a must to get the full benefits

There is a consensus view that the Indian economy will continue to maintain its world-beating momentum through the current fiscal despite multiple external headwinds such as rising geo-political tensions, an upswing in commodity cycle and higher fuel prices and domestic inflation print that remains elevated and entrenched. For one, the International Monetary Fund has projected Indian economy to grow at faster clip of 6.8% in 2024-25 fiscal and 6.4% in the next fiscal. This is arguably the highest growth trajectory projected for any large economy in the world including the US and China.

One reason cited to support this

line of thinking is the `demographic dividend’ that has been playing out for the country, which will last for the next few decades to come, sustaining higher rate of economic expansion. For the uninitiated, `demographic dividend’ refers to accelerated growth in an economy, stemming from a change in the age structure of a country’s population. This is typically manifested in the pronounced decline in fertility (birth) and infant mortality rates. A country that experiences low birth rates in conjunction with low death rates receives an economic dividend from the increase in productivity of the working age population. In other words, with fewer people to support and more young people in the la-

bour force, an economy’s resources are freed up and invested in other areas such as education and health that will accelerate a country's economic growth and the subsequent prosperity of the people. A peak into the economic history of People’s Republic of China shows that during the first half of its demographic dividend (1980-1995), the East Asian nation grew at a stupendous annual real rate of 10.25%. So did post WW II Japanese economy which grew in double digits during the four decades spanning from 1855 to 1995. And the economic benefits these two nations reaped from their respective episodes of demographic dividend, as they say, need no mentioning. Similarly, demographic dividend is

said to have contributed almost 20% of the economic growth of East Asian Tigers such as Taiwan between 1965 and 1990.

This makes a compelling case for India to craft its policies for better results from the change in the population pyramid. For India, the demographic dividend started playing out a few years back and this phase of population growth is expected to last till 2040. With 60% of its working age population falling between the age group of 15-64 years, India has a workforce which has the highest potential to contribute to higher labour productivity and development of human capital. India's population is

among the youngest in an ageing world. The median age of the population of the country as of 2022 was 28 years, while it was 37 in China and the United States, 45 in Western Europe, and 49 in Japan. This makes India the youngest country in the world.

But to take full advantage of the demographic dividend, it is my argument that the economy needs to grow at double digits at least for the next few decades so that it will lead to an orderly transition to a manufacturing economy. Such a pivot is key for India to reap rich dividends from the change in population profile for more than one reason.

Before getting into the details, it is indeed useful to study the sectoral contribution to the Gross Value Added (GVA), a proxy for value addition or productivity. As per the latest data available from the Government, the contribution of services sector to GVA was 54.86%, while the share of agriculture and allied sectors accounted for 17.59%. Notably, the contribution of manufacturing was 27.55%. If an economy has to grow in teens or in double digits, there is an imperative to increase the share of manufacturing sector in the overall GVA.

There are no two opinions that for India to become a developed

nation by 2047, the broader economy has to grow in double digits with manufacturing sector taking the lead. This is because employment and value addition in agriculture and services (net of Government sector) are often seasonal and the wages in these sectors are either based on the minimum wage norms or highly susceptible to the prevailing job market conditions.

This has its implications at three levels since household savings, consumption and investment are a function of wages (income) and all three are key independent variables that determine the value of the dependent variable in the national income equation that is GDP.

In contrast, wage structure in the industry or manufacturing sector, which falls under the organised sectors, is often a function of negotiation and rule based. Therefore, wages and attendant benefits there remain sticky and often appreciate to factor in the change in cost of living. Therefore, a higher share of manufacturing sector in the national output ipso facto means higher income, higher consump-

tion and higher savings in the economy that will translate into a higher investment rate.

It is an indisputable fact that wages are the primary source of income for households, especially in the rural areas and hinterland. Therefore, vagaries in wages affect the disposable income at the granular level. (Data shows wages constitute 54% of the income of 71% of the households in India.)

Second, as I mentioned earlier, if the economy has to accommodate a young and expanding workforce, the manufacturing sector has to grow at a faster clip. We could take a leaf out of the Chinese playbook where the country aligned their industrial policy with its demographic policy helping the burgeoning workforce find employment in the manufacturing sector.

The Government’s policies like `Make in India’ and Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan are tailor-made to expand India’s manufacturing footprint. But it may be prudent for the policy makers to expand their bandwidth and fine tune them to accommodate more sectors.

Indeed, India has a huge do-

mestic market for its firms to tap into and grow but domestic demand alone need not drive a higher and durable growth for Indian industries. Equally important is the external market that could not only help the domestic firms to operate at full capacity but also look for fresh capacities as and when demand expands. By putting our industry face-to-face with global players, the productivity of our firms is bound to expand.

To sum up, it is only prudent to argue that for the country to keep its tryst with the developed economy aspirations, the economy needs to grow in double digits with manufacturing leading the charge. In other words, for India to reap the full benefits of demographic dividend, recalibrating industrial policy is a must. By retooling the manufacturing policy, the country could not only accommodate the young and expanding labour force, but also increase the total factor productivity (of both capital and labour), thus putting the necessary tailwind to the sail of our competitiveness (both in cost and quality) and spur output and exports

The raison d'être, or fundamental reason for existence, of any modern organization must include a commitment to ESG and sustainability.

The Importance of ESG and Sustainability for the New Manager

In today’s fast-paced business environment, the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria and sustainability cannot be overstated. As a new manager stepping into the corporate world, it is imperative to recognize ESG and sustainability as the key pillars that will not only shape your managerial strategy but also define your company’s long-term success.

The Raison d'être of ESG and Sustainability

The raison d'être, or fundamental reason for existence, of any modern organization must include a commitment to ESG and sustainability. Gone are the days when companies could afford to focus solely on financial performance. Today, stakeholders—ranging from investors and customers to employees and regulators—expect companies

to act responsibly, ethically, and sustainably. The inclusion of ESG criteria into your management approach represents a holistic view that melds profit with purpose.

A Strategic Imperative

Embedding ESG into business strategy is not just a fanciful trend; it is a strategic imperative. Companies that prioritize ESG factors tend to outperform their peers over the long term. They are better positioned to manage risks, respond to regulatory changes, and capitalize on new opportunities that arise from a growing demand for sustainable products and practices. As a new manager, one must reckon with the idea that sustainability is not an optional add-on but a core element of strategic planning and decision-making.

The Manager’s Role in Implementing ESG

As a manager, you play a pivotal role in implementing ESG principles. This involves conducting a thorough materiality assessment to identify which ESG factors are most relevant to your business and its stakeholders. By prioritizing these factors, you can devise actionable plans that align with both your company’s goals and societal expectations.

For instance, environmental considerations might include reducing carbon footprints, improving energy efficiency, or promoting the use of sustainable materials. Social factors could focus on ensuring fair labor practices, enhancing community relations, or fostering diversity and inclusion within your team. Governance issues, on the other hand, may revolve around transparency, ethical business conduct, and robust risk manage-

ment frameworks.

Beyond the Facetious:

Genuine Commitment

It is important to move beyond a facetious or surface-level approach to ESG. Genuine commitment involves integrating these values into the fabric of your organization. This means regular reporting on ESG metrics, engaging with stakeholders transparently, and continuously improving ESG performance through innovation and best practices. By fostering a culture of sustainability, you can galvanize your team to work toward shared goals, creating a more engaged and motivated workforce.

Long-term Value Creation

The ultimate objective of in-

tegrating ESG and sustainability into your managerial practices is to create long-term value. This is not limited to financial gain but encompasses societal and environmental benefits as well. Companies that succeed in this endeavor do not merely survive but thrive, securing their place in a rapidly evolving global market.

Furthermore, incorporating ESG considerations can help mitigate risks that might otherwise go unnoticed. Climate change, social unrest, and governance failures are just some of the risks that can be managed more effectively through a solid ESG strategy. Therefore, as a new manager, your ability to foresee and address these

challenges will be crucial in navigating the complexities of modern business.

ESG and sustainability are not just buzzwords but essential components that define the modern business landscape. As a new manager, embracing these principles is imperative not just for the success of your company but for the well-being of society and the environment. By aligning your managerial practices with ESG values, you will be better equipped to drive long-term value, mitigate risks, and contribute positively to the world. In doing so, you will also fulfill the trust and expectations of all your stakeholders, solidifying your role as a responsible

and forward-thinking leader. Individuals with the inattentive type of ADHD may exhibit a higher number of symptoms related to inattention rather than impulsivity and hyperactivity.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

(ADHD) Can Be Controlled Easily if Diagnosed and Managed Early

ADHD, or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a prevalent mental condition that frequently affects children & even adults. The symptoms of ADHD encompass inattention, characterized by an inability to maintain focus, hyperactivity, which involves excessive movement that is inappropriate for the situation, and impulsivity, which refers to impulsive actions that occur without prior thought. This disorder is recognized as a chronic and incapacitating condition that significantly influences various aspects of an individual's life, such as their academic and professional accomplishments, interpersonal connections, and daily functioning. ADHD is a persistent condition characterized by difficulties in attention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. It typically emerges during childhood and can continue into adulthood. This condition can have a negative impact on various aspects of life, such as self-esteem, relationships, and academic or professional performance. ADHD symptoms are typically

observed during early childhood and may become more apparent when a child's environment changes, such as starting school. While most cases are diagnosed before the age of 12, there are instances where ADHD is diagnosed later in childhood.

In some cases, ADHD may not have been identified during childhood and is instead diagnosed in adulthood. Although the symptoms of ADHD may improve as individuals age, many adults who were diagnosed with the condition at a young age still face ongoing challenges. Individuals with ADHD may also experience additional difficulties, including sleep disorders and anxiety disorders.

Types of ADHD

ADHD can manifest in three distinct ways, based on the predominant symptoms exhibited by the individual at the time of diagnosis:

1. Predominantly inattentive presentation

2. Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive presentation

3. Combined presentation involving both inattentive and hyper-impulsive

symptoms.

1. Inattentive type

Each form of ADHD is associated with specific characteristics. ADHD is defined by inattention and hyperactive-impulsive behavior. These behaviors manifest in various ways: Inattention includes being easily distracted, having poor concentration, and lacking organizational skills. Hyperactivity involves constant movement, excessive talking, fidgeting, and struggling to stay focused. Impulsivity is demonstrated through interrupting others and engaging in risky behaviors. Each individual may exhibit these symptoms differently, with variations between genders. Boys may display more hyperactive traits, while girls may demonstrate quiet inattentiveness. The symptoms displayed will indicate the type of ADHD.

Individuals with the inattentive type of ADHD may exhibit a higher number of symptoms related to inattention rather than impulsivity and hyperactivity. While struggles with impulse control or hyperactivity may arise occasionally, they are not the

primary characteristics of this type of ADHD.

Common behaviors associated with inattentive ADHD include:

- Difficulty paying attention to details and being easily distracted

- Quick boredom

- Trouble concentrating on a single task

- Challenges with organizing thoughts and learning new information

- Tendency to misplace items necessary for completing tasks

- Seeming inattentive during conversations

- Moving slowly and appearing to daydream

- Slower and less accurate processing of information compared to others

- Difficulty following instructions It is worth noting that more girls receive a diagnosis of inattentive type ADHD than boys.

2. Hyperactive-impulsive type

This form of ADHD is distinguished by symptoms of impulsivity and hyperactivity. Individuals with this type may exhibit signs of inattention, although they are not as pronounced as the other symptoms. Individuals who are impulsive or hyperactive often:

1. Squirm, fidget, or feel restless

2. Have difficulty sitting still

3. Talk constantly

4. Touch and play with objects, even when inappropriate to the task at hand

5. Have trouble engaging in quiet activities

6. Are constantly “on the go”

7. Are impatient

8. Act out of turn and don't consider the consequences of actions

9. Blurt out answers and inappropriate comments

Children with hyperactiveimpulsive type ADHD can disrupt the classroom environment, making learning more challenging for themselves and their peers. A higher number of boys are diagnosed with the hyperactive-impulsive type com-

Most individuals, whether they have ADHD or not, encounter some level of inattentive or impulsive behavior.

pared to girls.

3. Combined Type

If an individual has the combined type of ADHD, it indicates that their symptoms do not solely align with either inattention or hyperactive-impulsive behavior. Instead, a mixture of symptoms from both categories is displayed.

Most individuals, whether they have ADHD or not, encounter some level of inattentive or impulsive behavior. However, these behaviors are more pronounced in individuals with ADHD. They occur more frequently and disrupt daily functioning at home, school, work, and in social settings.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, the majority of children with ADHD have the combined type. This type is more prevalent in boys than in girls. Hyperactivity is the most common symptom in preschool-aged children.

Symptoms of ADHD can evolve over time, leading to a potential change in the type of ADHD an individual has. ADHD can present as a lifelong challenge, but with the help of medication and other interventions, one's quality of life can be improved.

Causes

The precise cause of ADHD remains uncertain. While some theories suggest that ADHD may be triggered by excessive sugar consumption, excessive television viewing, or living in a disorganized environment, scientific research has not provided evidence to support these claims.

Instead, it is believed that genetics contribute to the development of ADHD. Researchers are also investigating other potential factors, such

as brain injuries, exposure to toxins like lead during pregnancy or early childhood, alcohol or tobacco use during pregnancy, and premature birth or low birth weight. Despite ongoing research, there is still much that is unknown about the causes of ADHD.

Primary care providers have the ability to diagnose and treat ADHD in some cases. However, they may also refer individuals to mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists or clinical psychologists, for a comprehensive evaluation and an accurate ADHD diagnosis.

In order for someone to receive a diagnosis of ADHD, the symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity must be persistent and have a significant impact on the person's functioning. These symptoms should also cause the individual to lag behind in their typical development for their age. It is important to note that other factors, such as stress, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and physical conditions, can produce similar symptoms to those of ADHD. Therefore, a thorough evaluation is necessary to determine the underlying cause of the symptoms.

Typically, children are diagnosed with ADHD during their elementary school years. However, for adolescents and adults to receive a diagnosis, the symptoms must have been present before the age of 12. ADHD symptoms can manifest as early as between the ages of 3 and 6 and can persist into adolescence and adulthood.

Genetics & Brain Function

Studies indicate that ADHD often has a genetic component, with inherited genes playing a crucial role in the development of the condition. It has been observed that individu-

als with ADHD are more likely to have family members who also have ADHD.

Studies have found several potential functional variances in the brains of individuals with ADHD compared to those without the disorder, although the precise implications of these variances remain uncertain. Research indicates that there are a variety of potential differences in the brains of individuals with ADHD compared to those without the disorder, although the exact significance of these variances is not fully understood. Furthermore, neurons, otherwise nerve cells, are responsible for transmitting signals within the brain. These signals move through the brain in clusters known as neuronal networks. The default mode network is what scientists refer to as the automatic attention network in the brain, while the taskpositive mode, or the executive network, is what they call the directed attention network. Studies have identified significant differences in the functioning of various networks in individuals with ADHD. Additionally, neurotransmitters, which are chemicals aiding in the transmission of signals between nerve cells, also contribute to ADHD.

How is ADHD Managed?

ADHD is typically managed through a variety of treatments aimed at alleviating symptoms and enhancing daily functioning. These treatments may involve medication, psychotherapy, educational interventions, or a combination of approaches.

1. Medications - For many people, ADHD medications reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity and improve their ability to focus, work, and learn. Sometimes several differ-

ent medications or dosages must be tried before finding the right one that works for a particular person. Anyone taking medications must be monitored closely by their prescribing doctor.

• Stimulants - The most common type of medication used for treating ADHD is called a “stimulant.” Although it may seem unusual to treat ADHD with a medication that is considered a stimulant, it works by increasing the brain chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine, which play essential roles in thinking and attention.

• Non-stimulant medicationsNon-stimulant medications, in addition to stimulants, are available for the treatment of ADHD. Although they may take longer to take effect, these medications can also enhance focus, attention, and impulsivity in individuals with ADHD.

2. Psychotherapy - Psychotherapy is beneficial for encouraging individuals to express their emotions related to managing ADHD. Additionally, ADHD can lead to difficulties in interactions with peers and authority figures. Psychotherapy aids in improving how one navigates these relationships.

3. Behaviour Therapy - The goal of behavior therapy is to teach someone how to monitor their behaviors and then change those behaviors appropriately.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) - is a brief, outcome-oriented type of psychotherapy designed to modify detrimental thinking patterns and substitute them with a fresh perspective on self-perception and ADHD symptoms.

4. Educational interventions – Parent Training & Education Programmes - Parent training and education programs can provide specialized support for parents of children with ADHD, offering guidance on effective communication, play, and work strategies to enhance their child's attention and behavior. Additionally, parents may have the opportunity to participate in training even before a formal diagnosis of ADHD is made for their child.

Social skills training entails your child's active participation in simulated scenarios, with the objective of instructing them on appropriate conduct in social settings by comprehending the impact of their actions on others.

Other Possible Treatments

-

It is important for individuals with ADHD to maintain a nutritious and well-balanced diet. Before making any dietary changes, it is crucial to consult with a medical professional. In certain cases, individuals may observe a potential connection between specific foods and the exacerbation of ADHD symptoms. If such a correlation is noticed, it is advisable to keep a record of the food and beverages consumed, as well as the subsequent behavior. This information can then be discussed with a general practitioner, who may recommend a consultation with a dietitian, a healthcare specialist specializing in nutrition.

Also, ensure the child is participating in regular physical activity & also the screen time is much reduced. A good amount of sleep is also a must factor.

ADHD should not be looked upon as a disorder as these kids possess amazing skills like excellent problem-solving skills, creative skills resiliency, unlimited energy, etc. "Always believe in your child and yourself because only you can be the right parent to your amazing child"

Recommendation from the 53rd GST Council MeetingA Brief Analysis of Certain Key Aspects

The inaugural meeting of the GST Council held on 22 June 2024 under the new Government marks a new beginning with an objective of addressing some of the concerns raised by the industry. In this article, I intend to delve into some of the key recommendations of the Council, which in my view, brings about certain pertinent changes.

1. In a first of its kind initiative, the Council has recommended a waiver in respect of interest and penalty relating to demands for the period FY 2017-18 to FY 2019-20 issued under Section 73 of the Central Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017 if the tax is paid up by 31.03.2025. It deserves mention that the proposed waiver would apply in respect of cases that do not entail the involvement of fraud, suppression, or wilful misstatement, etc or where a demand has crystallized owing to erroneous refunds. It is proposed that the said waiver would be incorporated by introduction of Section 128A

to the Central Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017.

2. The Council has also recommended certain key changes to Section 16(4) of the Central Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017. The GST Council has recommended that the deadline for availing input tax credit (ITC) for any invoice or debit note under section 16(4) of the Central Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017, through returns filed in FORM GSTR-3B, be extended to November 30, 2021, for the financial years 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21, which is a significant relief to taxpayers.

To facilitate this, the Council has proposed a retrospective amendment to Section 16(4) of the Central Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017, effective from July 1, 2017. It essentially implies that credit pertaining to the said financial years availed before November 30, 2021, would be the eligible input tax credit and no limitation of time limit applies in such case. It would be noteworthy

to mention that the Hon’ble High Court of Kerala in M Trade Links Vs Union of India (2024) 19 Centax 131 whilst upholding the constitutionality of Section 16(4) of the Act had held that the amendment extending the timelines to 30 November vide Finance Act, 2022 would need to be applied retrospectively.

3. The Council has also decided to insert a new provision, namely, Section 11A to the Central Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017. The said provision once incorporated would give power to the Government to allow regularization of non-levy or short levy of GST, where tax was being short paid or not paid due to common trade practices if recommended by the Council.

4. The Council has recommended the insertion of a new provision, namely, Section 74A in the Central Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017 to prescribe common time limits for issuing demand notices and orders under Section 73 and Section 74 of

the CGST Act. Currently, there are different time limits depending on whether there are charges of fraud, suppression, wilful misstatement, etc. For instance, where the provisions of Section 74 are invoked (ie, cases of fraud, suppression, wilful misstatement, etc) are invoked, the Act provides for an extended time limit of 5 years in contrast to 3 years in all other cases.

Further, it is also recommended that where the demand order is issued, the time limit for taxpayers to avail the benefit of a reduced penalty by paying the tax demanded along

with interest, is to be increased from 30 days to 60 days. This extension provides taxpayers an additional time to settle their dues with a reduced penalty, offering a more realistic timeframe for arranging funds and avoiding higher penalties.

5. Another key recommendation of the Council has been the prescription of monetary limits for filing appeals by the Department. The limits recommended, subject to certain exceptions, are as follows:

a. Before the GST Appellate Tribunal – INR 20 Lakhs

b. At the High Court – INR 1

c. At the Supreme Court – INR 2 crores.

6. The Council has also recommended the reduction of the amount of pre-deposit for filing of appeals under GST. This would indeed ease cash flow and working capital blockage for the taxpayers. The maximum amount for filing appeal with the appellate authority has been reduced from Rs. 25 crores, Central Goods & Services Tax (“CGST”) and Rs. 25 crores State Goods & Services Tax (“SGST”) to Rs. 20 crores CGST and Rs. 20 crores SGST respectively.

The Council has recommended the insertion of a new provision, namely, Section 74A in the Central Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017 to prescribe common time limits for issuing demand notices and orders under Section 73 and Section 74 of the CGST Act.

In another welcome measure, the amount of pre-deposit for filing an appeal with the Appellate Tribunal has been reduced from 20 percent with a maximum amount of Rs. 50 crores CGST and Rs. 50 crores SGST to 10 percent with a maximum of Rs. 20 crores CGST and Rs. 20 crores SGST respectively.

7. The imposition of interest under Section 50 of the Central Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017 has been a contentious issue. The Madras High Court in the case of Eicher Motors Limited (2024) 158 Taxmann.com 593 held that if the amounts payable towards GST are deposited in the Electronic Cash Ledger by to the due date, no interest is payable even if the return is filed belatedly. In consonance with this judgment, the GST Council has recommended amending Rule 88B of the Central Goods & Services Tax Rules, 2017 to specify that the amounts available in the Electronic Cash Ledger on the due date of filing the return

in Form GSTR-3B and debited while filing the return will not be included in interest calculations under Section 50 of the CGST Act for delayed filings.

8. The Council has also recommended providing a new optional facility by way of FORM GSTR-1A to amend details in FORM GSTR-1 for a tax period and/or to declare additional details, if any, before filing of return in Form GSTR-3B for the said tax period. This will ensure that the correct liability is auto-populated in the Form GSTR3B, as the current modus operandi for effecting revision in the returns of the subsequent months was leading to unnecessary mismatches.

In summary, the recommendations of the Council are indeed welcome. It is a clear sign that the new Government is keen to resolve disputes whilst also taking measures to facilitate trade and industry. The proposed amnesty with the introduction of Section 128A

to Central Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017 and the introduction of Section 11A to the Central Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017 for the reasons stated above is notable.

The Finance Minister had also highlighted that not all of the agenda in the 53rd Council Meeting could be taken up and hence many of the other pending issues would be taken up in the ensuing meetings. I would hope that the Government would also consider toning down the rigours of Section 16(2)(c) of the Central Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017, which mandates that a recipient would be entitled to take input tax credit only once the tax is paid by the concerned supplier despite having paid the supplier in full. The said provision has resulted in the Department being lackadaisical in the collection of taxes from the supplier as it has the option of collecting the tax from the recipient resulting in double jeopardy to the recipient of the goods

The brain is one of the most complex organs in our body, with nearly 86 billion neurons that form complex networks and communicate with each other, enabling all brain functions and activities. Interesting facts about Brain

• The human brain weighs 1.3 - 1.4 kg and nearly 60% of that is made up of fat.

• Our brain accounts for only 2% of our body weight but consumes nearly 20% of our calories in a day!

• The brain is constantly generating electrical signals, and these tiny electrical impulses produce a weak electromagnetic field that can

be measured using techniques like electroencephalography (EEG).

• The electric activity between the neurons of our brain can even light up a small light bulb!

• The brain is actually divided into two hemispheres, with each side controlling the opposite side of the body.

• The brain has an incredible ability to adapt and change throughout our lives. It can form new neural connections and pathways, a process known as neuroplasticity, which allows us to learn new skills and recover from brain injuries.

• The brain has an insatiable appetite for oxygen, using 20% of the body's total oxygen supply despite only accounting for 2% of its weight. This high oxygen demand is due to the brain's intense metabolic activity.

• The brain has an incredible capacity for storing memories, with es-

timates suggesting it can hold up to 2.5 million gigabytes of information. Common Brain Health Issues

The brain which is a marvel of complexity and resilience, is also vulnerable to a spectrum of neurological disorders and mental health conditions. The brain's health can be affected by various factors ranging from the intricate networks of neurons to the delicate balance of neurotransmitters. Such neurological and mental health disorders impact millions of people worldwide, impacting everything from memory and movement to emotions and cognition!

Neurological disorders typically arise from abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord, or nerves throughout the body. It is often due to structural or functional problems within the nervous system, such as

genetic mutations, infections, or trauma. Examples are Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis. Such conditions primarily impact the sensory, motor, or cognitive functions.

Mental Health Disorders on the other hand primarily involve disturbance in thoughts, emotions and behaviours that may be linked to a variety of complex reasons. It could be due to neurotransmitter imbalance, genetic reasons or psychological factors. Depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, eating disorder etc are some of the examples.

While both types of disorders can significantly impact an individual’s well-being, neurological disorders typically involve physical changes in the brain’s structure or function, whereas mental health disorders primarily affect mental processes and emotional regulation.

Maintaining Brain Health

The food we eat plays a crucial role in maintaining brain health. Certain foods can increase inflammation in the body, which negatively impacts the brain. Diets high in sugar, refined carbs, unhealthy fats, and processed foods can lead to such chronic inflammation, contributing to cognitive decline and increasing the risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.

On the other hand, a diet rich in essential nutrients supports brain function and overall health. Here are some of the nutrients that support brain health -

• Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These are critical for brain function and development, particularly EPA and DHA. They are found in fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines, as well as in walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds. Omega-3s help reduce inflammation and support cognitive

function.

• B Vitamins: These vitamins, including B6, B12, and folic acid, are essential for brain health. They help reduce homocysteine levels in the blood, which is associated with a lower risk of brain shrinkage and cognitive decline. Foods rich in B vitamins include whole grains, eggs, dairy products, legumes, and leafy green vegetables.

• Antioxidants: Antioxidants protect the brain from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. All colourful fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants. Vitamins E and C are particularly beneficial. Berries, nuts, seeds, and dark chocolate are excellent sources of antioxidants.

• Vitamin D: This vitamin plays a role in brain health by modulating the immune system and reducing inflammation. It can be obtained from sun exposure, fatty fish, fortified dairy products, and supplements if

A diet rich in probiotics and prebiotics can significantly enhance gut health and, consequently, cognitive health.

necessary.

• Minerals: Iron, zinc, and magnesium are essential for cognitive function. Iron helps carry oxygen to brain cells, zinc supports neurotransmitter function, and magnesium is involved in many biochemical reactions in the brain. Foods rich in these minerals include red meat, poultry, seafood, nuts, seeds, and green leafy vegetables. The Gut-Brain Link

The health of our gut, particularly the large intestine, has a direct impact on our mood and cognitive skills. This connection is largely due to the gut microbiota, which are the trillions of bacteria and other microorganisms living in the digestive tract. These microorganisms play a crucial role in digestion, immune function, and overall health, but their influence extends far beyond the gut.

One of the key aspects of the gutbrain link is the production of hormones and neurotransmitters. For instance, the gut is responsible for producing about 90% of the body’s serotonin, a neurotransmitter that significantly impacts mood, sleep, and cognition. When the gut microbiota are balanced and healthy, they help maintain optimal levels of serotonin hormone, which can improve mood and cognitive functions. Conversely, an imbalance in gut bacteria can lead to decreased serotonin levels, potentially resulting in mood disorders like depression and anxiety.

A diet rich in probiotics and prebiotics can significantly enhance gut health and, consequently, cognitive health. Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria that can be ingested through certain foods or supplements. They help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria. Examples of

probiotic-rich foods include yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and other fermented foods. These foods introduce beneficial bacteria into the gut, which can help improve digestion, boost the immune system, and enhance overall gut health.

Prebiotics, on the other hand, are types of fiber that feed the beneficial bacteria already present in the gut. By providing nourishment for these bacteria, prebiotics support their growth and activity. Foods high in prebiotics include garlic, onions, leeks, asparagus, bananas, and whole grains. By incorporating both probiotics and prebiotics into the diet, we can improve the gut health which can have a profound impact on our mental health too.

Impact of Exercise on Brain Health

Regular physical exercise has profound effects on brain health, offering benefits that extend well beyond physical fitness. Exercise improves brain function by enhancing blood flow to the brain. Increased blood flow delivers more oxygen and essential nutrients to brain cells, promoting their health and functionality. This improved circulation helps in the growth of new blood vessels and the development of new neurons, a process known as neurogenesis, particularly in the hippocampus, an area of the brain crucial for memory and learning.

In addition to promoting neurogenesis, exercise also boosts the production of neurotrophic factors, which are proteins that support the survival, development, and function of neurons. One such protein, brainderived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), plays a vital role in cognitive function, enhancing synaptic plasticity,

which is essential for learning and memory. Regular physical activity increases levels of BDNF, thus supporting cognitive functions and potentially protecting against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Exercise also has significant mental health benefits, helping to reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. Physical activity triggers the release of endorphins and serotonin, often referred to as “feel-good” hormones, which can improve mood and provide a sense of well-being. Additionally, exercise reduces levels of the body’s stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. By lowering these stress hormones, exercise helps mitigate the harmful effects of chronic stress on the brain, which can include impaired cognitive function and increased risk of mental health disorders. Engaging in regular physical exercise, hence, supports not only physical health but also cognitive and emotional well-being.

Sleep and Brain Health

Sleep is fundamental to maintaining optimal brain health and cognitive function. During sleep, the brain undergoes various restorative processes essential for overall health. One critical function of sleep is memory consolidation, where the brain processes and organises information acquired during the day, transferring it from short-term to long-term memory. This process is crucial for learning, problem-solving, and overall cognitive performance. Inadequate sleep can impair these functions, leading to difficulties in concentration, memory lapses, and decreased cognitive abilities.

Additionally, sleep plays a vital role in clearing waste products from

the brain. During sleep, the brain’s glymphatic system becomes more active, effectively removing metabolic waste and toxins that accumulate during wakefulness. One of the significant waste products cleared during this process is betaamyloid, a protein associated with Alzheimer’s disease. By facilitating the removal of such toxins, sleep helps reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases and maintains the brain’s health and functionality over time.

Sleep also has a profound impact on mental health. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to an increased risk of mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.

Sleep affects the regulation of neurotransmitters and hormones that influence mood, such as serotonin and cortisol. Poor sleep disrupts these regulatory processes, contributing to emotional instability and heightened stress levels. Ensuring adequate and quality sleep is therefore essential not only for cognitive health but also for emotional wellbeing, highlighting the importance of good sleep hygiene and consistent sleep patterns in maintaining overall brain health.

Conclusion

Maintaining brain health requires a multifaceted approach that encompasses proper nutrition, exercise and sleep. Equally

important is to manage stress and take care of our mental well-being. By being smart and sensible about our lifestyle choices, we can take proactive steps to support cognitive function and prevent neurological disorders to a great extend. Proper nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and a healthy gut all play crucial roles in preserving and enhancing brain health.

As we continue to learn more about the brain’s complexities, it is increasingly proven that a proper lifestyle is essential for maintaining cognitive vitality and overall mental health. Taking care of our brains today lays the foundation for a healthier and more resilient tomorrow

Rebellion of 1857. Despite its colonial nomenclature, the island has a rich indigenous history. The original inhabitants were the Great Andamanese, who have lived in these islands for thousands of years. The British established a penal colony in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the 19th century, which brought the islands into greater contact with the outside world.

Post-independence, the Indian government encouraged settlement on the islands, leading to a diverse population comprising mainly Bengali settlers. In 2018, the island was officially renamed Swaraj Dweep as a tribute to the Indian freedom struggle, but the name Havelock Island still resonates widely, especially among tourists.

Mercedes EQA

Vivek Venugopal is one of India’s top automotive writers with over a decade’s experience in road-testing and reviewing cars. He is currently the Editor of Quarter Mile magazine and a columnist in several leading magazines and newspapers. He is also a highly sought after consulting engineer and market analyst for many automobile manufacturers.

Mercedes Benz India is serious about their EQ range, kicking things off with the EQC, and followed by the EQS, EQB and EQE. The Mercedes EQA 250+, which we drove last week, is their smallest, most affordable electric vehicle yet. Since its launch in 2021, around 1.3 lakh units have been sold worldwide. What we are getting here now is the facelift version which is brought down from Germany as a CBU.

Unlike the EQS and EQE, the EQA is not built on a dedicated EV platform, but is based on a regular ICE engine car chassis. If you haven't it noticed already, the EQA is actually a GLA with its engine swapped out and an EV powertrain fitted. It is based on the MFA2 platform which

underpins their transverse engine, front-wheel drive cars like the A class, CLA, B class, GLA, GLB etc. Although the body is the same, the differentiation to the GLA is evident and there is no mistaking the EQA for its petrol/ diesel sibling. The styling is similar to other EQ models with large, closed-off grille with Merc logos dominating the front end with a lighting strip running along its upper perimeter. The rear also gets connected tail lamps with number plate moving off to the bumper. You also get AMG-style 19-inch alloy wheels with an aero lip.

You are in a land of more familiarity when you get inside the cabin. The dashboard is borrowed from the GLA and you get the same high seating position with good visibility. You get a rose gold

You can drive it around happily in town or cover big distances on the highway and the refinement is very impressive.

finish – an EQ trademark – on the AC vents and some of the interior trim. There are twin screens for the driver display and infotainment and they have EQ-specific graphics. The steering wheel is a sportier version but the touch buttons take some getting used to. The seats are made of recycled PET bottles. Both the front seats are powered and you also get adjustable lumbar. The front seats are comfortable for long distances. The rear seats, although a compara-

ble size for this segment, is relatively smaller in legroom and headroom. You get a lot of kit like seven airbags, a head-up display, double sunroof, 64 colour ambient lighting, 360-degree camera, parking assist, brake assist, etc.

Under the bonnet of the EQA is an 187bhp, 385Nm motor that drives the front wheels. The battery pack in our 250+ model; the plus sign indicating it’s the longerrange model, is a 70.5kWh unit.

Merc claims a range of 560km on a single charge and during our drive, we drove hard for a day and the battery was draining much slower than we expected. You can top it up at 100kW, with half an hour worth of charging adding nearly 400kms of range.

When you launch it, it doesn't have the same grip levels of the other all-wheel-drive models from the EQ range, and leaves its front wheels chirping for a bit. Perfor-

Although it’s imported, the lower tax bracket of EVs will hopefully make it good value. Mercedes also has their great finance plans and buy-back schemes which will offer up to 67 percent of its value after four years.
