Arvind Fashions Sells Sephora Retail Division to Reliance for ~99 Crore

illionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance is set to collaborate with Sephora, a beauty chain owned by LVMH, to manage its stores across India and facilitate the expansion of Sephora in the country's rapidly growing beauty and cosmetics market. Reliance, India's largest retailer, launched its beauty retail platform called Tira in April to compete with Nykaa and the Tata Group. The agreement entails Reliance taking over Sephora's 26 stores in India from its previous partner, Arvind Fashions, marking the end of their eight-year collaboration. Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd (RRVL) will have exclusive rights to develop and strengthen Sephora's presence in India through various channels, according to a statement from Reliance Retail. n 16th November, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) implemented stricter regulations on personal loans and credit cards, increasing the risk of a slowdown in loan growth. These new rules, involving higher capital requirements, are expected to raise the cost of such loans, potentially restricting the growth in these sectors that has surpassed the overall bank credit growth of approximately 15% in the past year. The RBI has raised the risk weights for both banks and non-bank financial companies (NBFCs) by 25 percentage points to 125% on retail loans. This adjustment applies to personal loans for banks and retail loans for NBFCs, excluding housing, education, vehicle loans, and loans secured by gold and gold jewellery. This higher capital requirement may lead to more expensive loans if lenders decide to pass on the additional cost, potentially reducing loan growth.

la Electric, the electric vehicle manufacturing division of Ola, has undergone a transition from a private company to a publicly listed entity as part of its preparations for an upcoming initial public offering (IPO). The company, established in 2017, has also modified its name to Ola Electric Mobility Limited, as indicated in regulatory filings. With plans for a public listing by the close of 2023, the electric two-wheeler manufacturer boasts a claimed 35% market share of electric two-wheelers in India and operates the largest two-wheeler factory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu. Ola Electric has initiated the construction of a 5 GWh lithium-cell manufacturing plant earlier this year. In October, the company secured Rs 3,200 crore in a funding round featuring a mix of equity and debt, led by Temasek and the State Bank of India. ndia is reportedly nearing the finalization of a deal with Tesla Inc., allowing the American automaker to import its electric vehicles into the country from next year and potentially establish a manufacturing plant within two years. Sources familiar with the Indian government's plans revealed this information to Bloomberg. The official announcement is anticipated to occur at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in January, with Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu being considered as potential locations due to their established infrastructure. According to the report, Tesla is planning an initial investment of around $2 billion for a new plant in India. The company also aims to procure auto parts from India, with an estimated value of up to $15 billion. Tesla is contemplating the production of some batteries in India to reduce costs, though these plans are subject to change. While Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated in June his intention for a "significant investment" in India and expressed plans to visit in 2024, there has been no official confirmation.

India Needs to Add 80 GW Coal-Based Capacity by 2030 to Meet Demand: Minister

ndia is facing a pressing need to boost its thermal coal-based power generation capacity by a substantial 80 GW, according to statements made by Union Power Minister RK Singh during a recent review meeting. Presently, only 27 GW of such capacity is under construction. The urgency is underscored by the minister's projection that the country's peak power demand is poised to escalate from the current 241 GW to a staggering 335 GW by the year 2030. The review meeting, which saw the virtual and physical participation of independent power producers and stateowned generators such as NTPC, SJVN, NHPC, DVC, THDCIL, and NLCIL, also included the involvement of energy secretaries from 13 major states. This collaborative effort aimed to address the growing energy demands faced by the nation.

SEBI to Introduce T+0 Settlement Trade by March 2024 and Instantaneous Settlement by 2025

he Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is actively developing a plan to implement same-day settlement of trades

by March 2024, with an optional system for instantaneous settlement, as stated by SEBI chief Madhabi Puri. During a press conference in Mumbai following a SEBI Board meeting, Puri highlighted the shared view among market infrastructure and brokers on the need for a technological pathway to achieve immediate settlement. She emphasized the preference for a direct transition from T+0 to instantaneous settlement, avoiding a one-hour delay as an interim step. Puri noted significant progress in discussions, with a nearly finalized roadmap for the optional parallel system.

Addressing the timeline, she mentioned, "What market participants have told us is that we will need to start at T+0 and then move to instantaneous. For T+0, it will be by the end of March, then instantaneous will be another year later."

Samuel Paty: Six French Teenagers on Trial Over Teacher’s Murder

ix teenagers in France, aged between 13 and 15 at the time, are currently on trial for their alleged complicity in the murder of teacher Samuel Paty in 2020. The tragic incident occurred when Paty, who had shown cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad during a class on freedom of expression, was killed by a Chechen refugee. The teenagers are accused of slander and of guiding the murderer to Paty at the school. The youngest among them, a 13-year-old girl, had been suspended from school just days before the murder, for reasons unrelated to the case. However, she falsely claimed to her father that she confronted Paty over an alleged request for Muslim students to leave the class, leading to social media posts that prosecutors believe influenced the killer's actions.

Italy Bans Lab-Grown Meat in Nod to Farmers

talian Members of Parliament have given their approval to a law that bans the production, sale, or import of lab-grown meat or animal feed, a move championed by the right-wing government under the banner of defending Italian culinary traditions. Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida asserted that Italy has become the first nation to shield itself from the perceived social and economic risks associated with synthetic food. The parliamentary vote prompted both support and opposition, leading to a physical altercation between farmers and some MPs. Despite the scuffle, the bill passed with a majority of 159 votes in favor and 53 against. Violating the law could result in fines of up to €60,000.

Presently, the impact of the law is limited, as lab-grown meat has only been approved for human consumption in Singapore and the United States. The European Union has yet to give the green light to lab-grown meat, categorized as "novel foods." If EU approval is granted, Italy's new law may face challenges from the European Commission.

Spain’s Pedro Sánchez Wins New Term as PM After Amnesty Deal

Also, invites are lining up for joint ventures in many foreign countries. However, legal hurdles are galore although the advent of Ayush has solved such issues to an extent. Currently, talks are underway with some countries for such joint ventures.

Beyond his professional triumphs, Baby Mathew finds equilibrium in his personal life alongside his wife, Sarah Baby Mathew, an engineering graduate actively engaged in the business activities of the Group. She also oversees a Fab India franchise. Their family, including their 10-year-old daughter, Sana Maya Baby Mathew, embodies the essence of a harmonious life.

What Next for Gold?

Despite elevated prices, faster-than-expected economic expansion is driving domestic demand for gold

F

or me, gold is always a subject that I keep close to my heart. And I always find it amusing to see how the gold market navigates through the various phases of an economic cycle. A nuanced reading will show that many a time gold market behaviour puts conventional economic wisdom to test by taking a different course.

For the sake of context, economic theory has it that the demand for

any goods or for that matter services is a function of supply and demand.

The market arrives at an equilibrium when the demand and supply curves intersect at a particular price point which is considered as optimum for both producers and suppliers. However, a closer scrutiny of gold market behaviour may prove this hypothesis null and void.

For one, in the case of gold, the first condition – that supply clears

demand at an equilibrium price point – could be relaxed since the availability of the yellow metal is a given at any point of time. It goes without saying that it is the singular factor of inelastic supply that gives gold the status of precious metal.

Therefore, it is a no brainer to infer that the demand for gold – indeed while other things remain equal – may be influenced by many other factors.

The recent tidings in the Indian gold market support this hypothesis that the demand for yellow metal is a function of a host of factors and prices have a diminishing role to play in explaining its demand. To sticklers to economic dogma, this line of argument may sound bizarre or outlandish and they might have their reasons to think so. But, as is often proved, real life economic realities are far from textbook economics, and the gold market behaviour in recent times provides further evidence to this fact.

Let me elucidate my line of argument with evidence from the Indian gold and jewellery market. We hit the festival and wedding season this year with the hope of higher retail gold sales but high prices were seen weighing on demand with many in the industry throwing up their hands in desperation. Many in the retail trade even foresaw lower sales as prices tend to trend high as the geopolitical situation took a turn for the worst. However,

the negativity soon gave way to optimism, if not euphoria, as the festival sales reportedly beat previous records. Though, we still don’t have the required numbers to prove this point, umpteen conversations I had with my friends in the industry unequivocally pointed to the fact that this festive season was exceptionally good for gold retail trade.

There are supplementary evidences to support this optimism.

It may be in order here to note that in India, economic growth and demand for gold are highly correlated despite the evolution of market for financial assets.

In other words, higher the level of economic activity, higher is the demand for gold. A plausible reason for such a strong correlation may be the insurance the yellow metal provides in times of need for the Indian households.

Going by this line of reasoning, the outlook for gold looks promising to me since Indian economy is poised to grow at a faster clip driven by both urban and rural demand unless, to borrow a fashionable term from Prof Nassim Nicholas Taleb, who famously predicted the 2007 global financial crisis, any black swan events surface. To conclude, despite growing risks to global growth and elevated prices, faster than expected domestic economic expansion is driving domestic demand for gold and that may remain so going forward

It cannot by itself give you a lot of informa-

tion – slow, fast, normal, weak et.al. But it is an opportunity to peek into the portals of the organization. It helps you to ask questions to delve deeper into the institutional psyche at the moment – what ails or what could be the probable causes?

Edgar Schein the 'supreme guru' of culture defines it as: "A pattern of shared basic assumptions that the group learned as it solved its problems of external adaptation and internal integration that has worked well enough to be considered valid and, therefore, to be taught to new members as the correct way to perceive, think, and feel in relation to those problems." The interesting thing about culture is that – it can never be clearly defined by the people bound by it – difficult to 'see the forest through the trees'. It is also best to employ an iterative method to ask questions and understand the connections between the various symptoms and draw a palette of link diagrams that effectively helps one to boil down to a couple of causal factors.

Management science itself has developed a few official sounding tools like Culture web analysis, Social network analysis, etc. to categorize and affinitize various issues and present to you a diagnostic chart that broadly describes the enterprise culture organizational alignment to various people and strategic issues.

But an easier way would be to answer a series of questions internally like:-

What kind of actions is applauded in the organization? Who are the 'rock stars' in the organization? What do we see in our role models? What are the attributes that we admire in them? One should also be cautioned to not fall for stereotyping like – engineers like technology, HR hates numbers, the marketing department is more aggressive, customer representatives don’t want challenges, the IT department is inflexible et.al.

How do we respond to situations?

How are we perceived from the outside?

When there is a critical incident in an organization, it is often the best time to observe the character of the organization. Read these actions from the organizational context. Do we always adhere to a set of documented procedures? Or are we encouraging our managers to take the best course of action that

It always helps to have an external stakeholder talk on how the organization is perceived from outside. It is often the characteristics of the leaders that are clearly visible to outsider. There is also the argument that – the leader is the showcase of culture of the organization. But the apparent impression gets formed

Based on what I have seen in the last two decades these are some great ways to build a high-performance culture in your organization.

1. Have a shared vision - More than a statement on the newsletter, a framed picture on the wall, or an organization screen saver, a simple clear statement conveying what the company exists for is important and more importantly, something that

has meaning to every employee.

Great examples are the Tatas - “To improve the quality of life of the communities we serve”, Or P&G- “To improve the life of world's consumers”.

2. Reinforce the right behaviours – Have a clear rewards policy where employees who do the ‘right thing’ are lauded and rewarded and made an example of. Likewise, one also has to take a tough stance when there are breaches of trust and integrity.

3. Create informal communication avenues – A good newsletter is often not enough, one has to encourage employees to discuss the organization by leveraging social media, group chats and informal fetes.

Water cooler discussions and gossip should not be dismissed. They are a valuable source of information.

4. Look at culture from the organizational context – It is im-

portant to be aware of what your employees think of your structure, processes, salaries, incentives, etc.

It is this context that outlines your culture and is what needs to change before the mind-sets.

5. Cultural change is a gradual process – Do not try too many things together. Cultural change needs concerted thinking and detailed interventions.

There is no prescription for culture. While leading by example is the most common solution – it is not always easy. The additional challenge is the transient workforce. Attritions are at appalling levels and it becomes more and more important to have formal mechanisms to teach and reinforce key attributes. Whether you like it or not, you cannot ignore it …

The production of melatonin can also be thrown off when we are deprived of sunlight during the day or exposed to too much artificial light at nightespecially the light from electronic

devices, including TVs, computers, tablets, and mobile phones.

The average sleep required for an adult between 18-64 years is 7-9 hours (as per the National Sleep Foundation). But the average adult sleeps less than seven hours per night.

In today's fast-paced and competitive society, six or six and a half hours of sleep may sound pretty good. In reality, it's chronic sleep deprivation.

During sleep, the brain rests busy neurons and forms new pathways so that it can start new functions in the morning. Sleep deprivation leaves the brain exhausted, producing sleepiness. It interferes with our ability to concentrate and learn new things. It negatively impacts both short-term and long-term memory. It gets in the way of our decision-making process and stifles creativity. Our emotions are also affected, making us more likely to have a short temper and mood swings. If sleep deprivation continues long enough, it increases the risk of hallucinations, mania, impulsive behaviour, depression, paranoia, and suicidal thoughts.

Brain events called “sharp wave ripples” are responsible for consolidating memory.

The ripples also transfer learned information from the hippocampus to the neocortex of the brain, where long-term memories are stored.

Sharp wave ripples occur mostly during the deepest levels of sleep.

Tips to Improve Sleep •Stick to a sleep schedule.

•Create a room that's ideal for sleeping.

Often, this means cool, dark and quiet. The mattress and pillow can contribute to better sleep.

•Create a bedtime ritual like taking a warm bath or shower, reading a book, or listening to soothing music - preferably with the lights dimmed. Relaxing activities like alpha meditation are useful.

•Don't go to bed either hungry or stuffed.

Nicotine, caffeine and alcohol should be taken with caution. Take only adequate water before sleep.

•Limit daytime naps. If you choose to nap during the day, limit yourself to about 10 to 30 minutes and make it during the midafternoon.

•Regular physical activity/ aerobic exercises can promote better sleep.

Analysis BNS has proposed a set of modifications to the penalty framework for criminal offenses. As a result of these changes, an additional fine of INR 5000 has been introduced along with a maximum imprisonment for a period of 6 months as the prescribed

punishment for the offense of Intentional omission to give information of offence by person bound to inform.

The punishment for Dishonest Misappropriation of Property has undergone a structural change. The maximum punishment for the said offence still remains the same as two years but a minimum punishment has been introduced through The BNS Bill as 6 months. This meets the objective of the BNS to enhance the punishments for the penal provisions. BNS as a legislation aims to make the statute as comprehensive as possible. Consequently, several provisions in the Penal Code has been omitted with the introduction of this bill in the Parliament. Indian Penal Code (IPC) had provided a separate section for prescribing punishment for the offence of Criminal

Breach of Trust under Section 407 of IPC, but the drafters of BNS took an inclusive approach to it and provided definition, explanation and punishment under the same roof, which is Clause 314 of the Bill. It is also worth noting that the Punishment for the offence of criminal breach of trust has been increased to 5 years from 3 years.

The Code under Section 410 defined the word “Stolen Property”.

For a property to be considered as stolen, it has to be obtained through certain acts prescribed under the Code. This initially consisted of Theft, Robbery, Extortion and Criminal Breach of Trust through Criminal Misappropriation of Property.

The Maximum Punishment for the offence remains as two years but a minimum punishment of 6 months has been added by the BNS. Similarly considering the gravity of the offence of Dishonest or fraudulent execution of deed of transfer containing false statement of consideration, its punishment has been increased from two years to three years.

Further, whoever dishonestly or fraudulently causes any person to

sign, seal, execute or alter a document or an electronic record or to affix his electronic signature on any electronic record knowing that such person by reason of mental illness of mind or intoxication cannot know the contents of the document or electronic record or the nature of the alteration comes under the purview of making a false document under Clause 333 of BNS. The word “unsoundness of mind” under Section 464 of IPC has been replaced by the word “mental illness” in the Bill. Thereby making the scope of the provision narrow and specific. Even though these words are used interchangeably, they are distinct in itself. Any mere irregularity in the mental capacity of a person will constitute unsoundness of mind whereas to constitute

mental illness, a person has to be diagnosed with certain specific illness.

The judiciary has been insisting on changes for this provision for a long time now and this alteration is notable while considering the judicial opinion in the case of Sheila Sebastian vs. R. Jawaharaj and Ors. (11.05.2018 - SC) MANU/ SC/0542/2018, where the court explicitly stated that “unless and until ingredients under Section 463 of the Code are satisfied a person cannot be convicted under Section 465 by solely relying on the ingredients of Section 464, as the offence of forgery would remain incomplete”.

The Court was also of the opinion that the ingredients under Section 464 of IPC is not sufficient in itself to constitute the offence of Forgery.

FINANCE The offence of forgery of record of court or of public register was initially limited to certain documents such as certificate of birth, burial, marriage, documents held by court and public servants etc. Through the BNS Bill, documents for identification issued by the Government such as Aadhaar Card and Voter Identity card has also been made part of this provision.

A new sub clause namely Clause 339(3) has been added to the BNS for punishing possession of any seal, plate or any other instrument knowing to be counterfeit. Similarly, sub-clause 4 of the same clause provides the punishment for using any genuine seal or plate or any other instrument with sufficient reason to believe it as to be counterfeit. This act will be treated as if he had made or counterfeited such an instrument. The major aspect to consider in these offences are the intention of the parties. This provision was not present in the colonial penal code.

Changes brought to the offences discussed above haven’t affected the basic nature of the crime. Whereas changes brought to the offence of sedition and the reintroduction of the offence of adultery after being repealed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court in the case of Joseph Shine v. Union of India (2019) 3 SCC 39 has affected the whole structure of the offence which was initially embodied in the Code. One would note that the purport of law governing adultery was recently clarified by the Constitution Bench of Hon’ble Supreme Court in 2023 SCC Online SC 149 as being in the nature of a “civil wrong”.

Tata’s 1.5 litre turbo petrol is still some time away and the Harrier continues to be powered by the 2.0 litre diesel four-cylinder engine with

170bhp and 350Nm. The engine is a bit coarse, but it has good low end grunt and midrange. The test cars were all manual and we aren’t big fans of the long clutch travel, the strange point and gear shift quality.

Unless you really want a manual, just go for the automatic. The automatic is a Hyundai sourced six speed unit and although it doesn't like to

be hurried, it's smooth in the way it delivers its shifts.

With the new updates, the Harrier has enough to be back on top of the buyer's list in that segment. It is just as comfortable, now has more features to boast and looks even better than before
