THE SWEET TASTE OF RICHARD MILLE'S BONBON WATCH COLLECTION

Richard Mille is known for making bold and unexpected statements, and it’s no surprise that at this year’s edition of SIHH (Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie) in Geneva, the brand shook up some expectations. Founded in 1999 on technical innovation, artistic expertise and with a background in watchmaking, the collectors-loved brand presented the The Bonbon Collection, a new 10-piece series of sweet and juicy watches.

The Bonbon Collection by Richard Mille is a rebellious set in acid-bright colors that brings the watches into a new realm of graphic, emotional and chromatic

expression. Comprised of 10 models — each produced in an edition of 30 pieces — the watches articulate a sweet and tangy new vision in watchmaking. Featuring candies, pastries and fruits, the collection revisits three of the brand’s iconic models — the RM 07-03, RM 16-01 and RM 37-01 — to offer a ticket back to childhood.

The pieces feature colored gemstones and a finely tuned eye for detail offering a wealth of shades and textures. The crowns and some of the case bands, take the shape of particular treats, such as cupcakes or gelatos.

With a deep understanding of how tinted ceramics behave and an expertise in altering materials like carbon TPT® and quartz TPT, the Bonbon Collection by Richard Mille is manufactured with the brand’s superior technical standards.

Applying the science of materials and textures to the realm of confectionary, Richard Mille has embarked on a vast collection of delicious and powerfully evocative pieces. Whether in the sweet or fruit line, every watch in the The Bonbon Collection is mouth-wateringly appetising, and promises a moment of horological ecstasy.’

ZAHA HADID DESIGN TEAMS UP WITH SWISS BRAND ODLO

Sportswear isn’t always that sexy, but a collaboration between Swiss technical sportswear brand Odlo and Zaha Hadid Design has left us breathless. The design team has created a set of engineered base layer tops and leggings that feature Odlo’s signature innovations, including organic body mapping and seamless knitting. The two sets (one for men, one for women) feature an elastic seamless knitted texture that controls the flow of air and adapts to breathing and movement. Thanks to organic body mapping, the pieces act as a second skin, with no seams limiting flow and flexibility.

‘Initially, this collaboration might be hard to appreciate,’ says Timo Pape, Odlo’s Brand director. ‘If you look deeper at the values of both ODLO and Zaha Hadid Design, it becomes absolutely clear: Zaha Hadid Design’s philosophy around fluidity, aesthetics and design, is truly complementary to ODLO’s ethos of being the “Engineers of Active Layers since 1946.” Together, with our different lenses, we assessed how the body works and what it needs to perform, culminating in a completely new way to look at Body Mapping. We have completely changed the way our next to skin product is made and will be made, moving forward.’

The collection took shape in much the same way as most of the London practice’s projects come to life, with a combination of visual ideas and vigorous research. Sporting underwear has never been so fit.

KELLY HOPPEN-DESIGNED CRUISE SHIP

The cruise ship, called Celebrity Edge, has 1,500 suites designed by British interior designer Kelly Hoppen, who also fitted out the world's first cantilevered deck that can move up and down the ship's exterior.

The moving deck, or Magic Carpet, is the size of a tennis court and travels 16 storeys up and down the side of the ship through an orange structured hoop system, with the ability to dock at four separate locations.

Its design was masterminded by architect Tom Wright, who designed the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, with the interior decoration completed by Hoppen.

Hoppen's interiors are often pared back and neutral in tone. She was initially unnerved by the bright colour of the Magic Carpet's structural elements, but integrated this into the design.

"Of course, for me, the bright orange wasn’t an ideal base colour to work with. However, this inspired the idea of nautical design somehow, and of using greys and blacks alongside burnt oranges with stripes, textures and different materials to create an inviting space."

The Magic Carpet can be attached at four levels including deck two where it forms an extension to the embarkation station where guests join the ship.

It can also be attached at deck five where it completes the footprint of a seafood restaurant, deck 14 where it extends the pool deck and deck 16 at the top of the ship where it creates a large dining area.

"Everything is totally moveable and the neutrals mean that accessories can be added in to create a changeable design also," explained Hoppen.

CHANEL UNVEILS A SKATEBOARD AND A SURFBOARD

Chanel’s accessory offerings are eclectic, diverse and every bit luxe. The brand, under the direction of its maverick creative director- Karl Lagerfeld, has presented fans with several sporty toys in the past, ranging from ice skates to motorcycle helmets. In carrying on the very same legacy, the marque's most recent offering is that of uber-chic skateboards and surfboards.

Created and put forth as part of the Chanel Spring/Summer 2019 collection, the brand-new surfboard and skateboard come stamped with its iconic double C logo. The skateboard is crafted from luxurious black lacquered wood with glistening grip tape on top and an embossed panel with the interlocking logo in a matching black color. It further features white wheels and hardware to complement the all-black look of its exterior.

The surfboard, on the other hand, dons a tonal silver hue and is crafted from aluminum, glass, and polyurethane. Like its cruiser counterpart, it also features the signature interlocking C logo on the tail.

TOM FORD UNVEILS PRIVATE BLEND RESERVE COLLECTION

If bold and sensuous with a touch of somber is your smell, fragrances by Tom Ford may in all probability be your thing. After introducing a range of intoxicating perfumes over the years, the marque is now back with a consolidated collection of its best scents under the ‘Private Blend Reserve Collection’. The limitededition ensemble dilutes the dilemma of choice and presents you with a unique chance to own eight top notch Tom Ford Fragrances under one package.

The exclusive collection will feature – the ‘Amber Absolute’ with the hypnotizing notes of African essence, labdanum, oak wood and vanilla bean, the ‘Arabian Wood’ with a heady mix of florals, spices, exotic woods and orris, the ‘Black Violet’ that presents scents of intense violet with a dash of refreshing citrus, the ‘Bois Marocain’ with dominating tones of incense, patchouli, earthy vetiver and delicate Thuya wood, the ‘Italian Cypress’ – a warm mix of citrus, basil and cypress wood, the ‘Jonquille de Nuit’ with its heady, hypnotic and sensual floral mix, the ‘Rive de’ Ambre’ with seductive amber notes and lastly the ‘Velvet Gardenia’ with a lush touch of Jasmine.

DISINTEGRATING X CAPTURES AN EXPLODING LAMBORGHINI MIURA

It took Swiss photographer Fabian Oefner two years to complete. During that time, Oefner and his team travelled to the workshops surrounding the Lamborghini Factory in Sant’Agata, Italy to capture each piece of a Lamborghini Miura SV from 1972 as it was being restored. The final image, consisting of more than 1,500 individual photographs, shows

the iconic Italian sports car frozen in mid-explosion. There are no fireballs gushing forth, just every large and small component of the car in varying stages of departure.

“It had always been my dream to create an art piece with a real car. One day, a friend said to me ‘I have a Miura, and I’m having it restored.

Why don’t you take the opportunity to create one of your Disintegrating images?’ And of course he didn’t have to ask me twice to work on one of my favourite cars, to get to touch every single screw and piece of that legend, and put them into a final composition,” Oefner said.

Nike has been a go-to name for many sports enthusiasts, including golf aficionados. And while the brand has produced some reliable sports gear in the past, we’re in a debate when it comes to the new Air Max 1 sneakers. LOUIS VUITTON’S NEW GLOW IN THE DARK BAG

From perfumes, accessories to even audio devices, Louis Vuitton seem to have stretched its mark of luxury to every little nook and corner of the fashion world. However, if there’s one thing that the brand is still the most trusted for, it has to be bags and luggage. From classic LV monogrammed totes to chic leather handbags, the marque has given us it all! And in an ode to surprise us yet again, it is all set to present us with novel glow-inthe-dark keepalls, an accessory that is now trending on the internet at lightning speed!

exterior – the one element that makes it stand out and look weird all at once.

Although Air Max 1's are a great pair of shoes, it’s the new avatar of the sneakers that is raising some eyebrows amongst fashion devotees. Its golf-inspired edition showcases a rugged, grass-ready outsole

with a turf-like exterior made of artificial grass. It is further complemented by matching green laces and a contrasting white Swoosh branding (both on the outside as well as inside). The shabby exterior of the shoe sits perched on a white midsole with visible Air cushioning at the heel and a gum rubber outsole for a firm grip.

Conceptualized under the creative direction of Virgil Abloh, the new glowin-the-dark bags form part of the brand’s exquisite Spring/Summer 2019 collection. A fiery accessory of sorts, the keepalls are apparently lit-up with a series of fiber-optic lights that are seamlessly fitted into the bag’s fabric. They were first showcased at the brand’s Paris show that also showcased other pieces from Abloh’s eclectic new collection. The star-studded event was brought to an end with the glowing keepalls being strutted around by black models in the dark.

German brand Pelikan is commemorating the 90th anniversary of the introduction of its famous differential piston-fill system by releasing a limited edition fountain pen. Called the Pelikan Herzstück 1929 fountain pen and available since March, only 462 numbered pieces are up for grabs. Here’s a little bit of history to explain what makes the new limited edition writing instrument truly special. It was in 1929 when the Pelikan fountain pen was born, which is credited for being the world’s first pen to introduce the differential piston mechanism. It was a huge improvement over the filling systems available at that time and it won’t be wrong to say that it altered the course of fountain pen history. The limited edition pays tribute to the original Pelikan fountain pen that could be recognized by its dark green barrel, differential piston mechanism, and transparent ink window.

The new limited edition Herzstück 1929 fountain pen carries many of the stylings and functional elements as seen on the very first Pelikan fountain pen, including the translucent ink viewing window, pelican beak-inspired clip and the logo on the cap. The original patent number of the differential piston mechanism is engraved on the piston cylinder and the 18k solid gold medium nib is specially inscribed for this edition. The limited edition arrives in a special black presentation box which also includes a bottle of Royal Blue Pelikan ink.

is comprised of natural ingredients sourced from the furthest corners of the globe, culminating in a mesmerising scent with notes of amber, sandalwood, musk, rare pure Indian agarwood, pure Turkish rose, patchouli ylang-ylang and frankincense that are estimated to last on the skin for more than 12 hours.

Asghar Adam Ali, founder and chairman of Nabeel Perfumes, said: “With a history of passion for perfumery that has spanned 47 years and a keen eye for jewellery design, my dream was to bring to life a 'history in the making' concept. My vision was not only to capture Dubai’s persona in one monumental piece of art, but to also create a fragrance that embodied the pinnacle of luxury in the world of perfumery.”

IT'S NOT A Ruby

You thought it was a ruby. So did the Black Prince, Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales, in 1367, who owned one of the most famous coloured gems in the collection of the British Crown Jewels. However, he was wrong. It's not a ruby and it isn't black either. It's a red spinel crystal, uncut, but slightly polished. Because of its size, about 170 carats, and approximately 5 centimetres, it is one of the world's larger uncut spinels.

26 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 27

This particular gem has a rich and bloody history. It had been in the possession of Abū Sa'īd, the Arab Muslim Prince of Granada. Historical records show that Don Pedro the Cruel of Castile was eager to have the riches of Abū Sa'īd and welcomed him in Seville. However, when Abū Sa'īd entered, Don Pedro may have stabbed Abū Sa'īd and killed him. Don Pedro claimed the spinel which was hidden in the corpse.

Henry V wore it at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Although he nearly lost his head and the helmet which bore the gem, he lived to fight another day. Richard III may have worn it in his helmet at the Battle of Bosworth. However, that was where he died. This particular gemstone is not to be used for good luck.

The gem, as was typical of jewels through history, was frequently used as payment or for ransoms. Often men wore their most magnificent jewels in the event that they were captured or needed to make a negotiation on the battlefield; they had their money on them. They didn’t leave home without them.

Another misnamed spinel in the collection of the British Crown Jewels is the 352.5ct Timur Ruby which was presented to Queen Victoria by the East India Company in 1849 and became part of a necklace in the collection. It is engraved with several names of previous owners. Both of these important gems came from Tajikistan, or Baladistan, as it was called then, which is why these gems are often referred to as "Balas" rubies.

Catherine the Great loved spinels and one of her magnificent jewels was a hair ornament with a centre stone of brilliant red. At 398.72 carats, it is one of the largest spinels ever found. The story goes that a Chinese mercenary, Chun Li, found it. He was in the army of the Turco-Mongol conqueror, Timur or Tamerlane. Eventually the gem was a part of trade negotiations with the Emperor in 1676. The showpiece of the Russian Imperial Crown, the spinel was acquired by a Russian envoy and became part of the crown for Catherine the Great’s coronation in 1762.

Although historically significant, many people are unaware of spinel. To some extent this confusion with rubies can be forgiven as spinels and rubies are both mined in the same areas of South East Asia, including Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. They also are found in various areas of Africa and other places around the world.

Spinels are composed mainly of magnesium and aluminium. They are harder than quartz at 7.5 - 8 on the Moh’s scale, which makes them ideal for jewellery, especially rings. The various colours, from black, red, pink, blue and yellow, are the result of trace minerals which give each gem its particular colour. Chromium makes the spinel red; cobalt gives it the beautiful blue colour and iron colours the gems orange or purple.

Spinels have a cubic shape, octahedral, as do diamonds; two back to back pyramids. The crystals can be so perfect that they are often set, much like the Black Prince’s Ruby, with little or no faceting, just as they are taken from the earth. Sometimes, however, the pressures of the earth cause the crystal to be squeezed or flattened against another crystal, creating what is called a “twinned” crystal. These twins are usually not cut and are regarded as interesting and collectable mineral specimens, valued for their perfection of shape and colour.

Although smaller, one of the more famous spinels is the Hope Spinel. It was owned by Henry Hope and is classified as an exceptional treasure of nature because of its unusual transparency. Most gems have inclusions which affect the transmission of light. If there are many, the gem is called translucent. If there are few, the gem may be transparent. It weighs 50.13 carats and came from the famous, almost inaccessible Kuh-i-Lal mine, in Tajikistan. No matter where the gems come from, mining them is often exceedingly difficult, especially when the mines are found at high altitudes with harsh weather much of the year.

Erica Courtney

Known throughout the jewellery world as “Indiana Jones in 6-Inch Heels”, Erica Courtney travels the globe searching for the most precious, coveted and rare gemstones to create her unique 18k gold and platinum designs. From the jungles of Asia to the depths of Africa, no adventure is too dangerous if it means finding some of the earth’s most beautiful treasures!

Inspiration for Erica is a magical phenomenon, a mysterious combination of sense and experience, and she’ll tell you that the gemstones themselves sometimes “speak” to her when she’s designing. Each gemstone has a story to tell.

Erica’s signature Drop Dead Gorgeous collection features exceptional

coloured gemstones set in intricately detailed fine jewellery designs. Her recognisable feminine aesthetic adds a romantic angle to the adventurous tale of each gemstone she selects. Collectors of Erica’s work continue the story, wearing the jewels to fabulous events or adding a touch of glamour to their favourite casual outfits, knowing the heirloom-quality pieces will be enjoyed for generations. The list of awards honouring her work is understandably endless.

At the other end of the jewelry spectrum are the mineral collectors such as The Crystal Circle. Jack and Pete Heckscher, a father and son team known for fine worldwide minerals created The Crystal Circle in 1997. They are based out of Cincinnati, Ohio and exhibit across the United States at various

mineral shows. They present natural specimens which hook collectors looking for something beautiful and natural, a special work of art.

Jack and Pete began rock hunting together when Pete was very young, searching local creeks for fossils and then expanded their mining to include gems from all over North America and all over the world. They first attended the Tucson Gem and Mineral show in 1989 and have made it an annual tradition ever since. Many of their specimens are of smaller minerals, sometimes described as ‘thumbnails’ which allow the collectors to indulge their passion without consideration of space. Good material purchased from numerous mineral collections, and new production have garnered the attention of fine collectors and store owners worldwide.

The Wilensky Gallery, newly located in New York’s hyperactive Chelsea art neighborhood, specializes in larger specimens, suitable for significant collections. Presented as art for display, Stuart and his son Troy have decades of mineral specimen knowledge and understanding.

Donna and Stuart Wilensky are typical of collectors who start small and then are bitten by the wonder of the minerals. They fell in love with a clear quartz cluster, took it home, placed it on their dining room table and just stared with wonder at the natural beauty, the unbelievable perfection of the sharp clear crystals.

They came to feel that every creative work they had ever seen would pale in comparison to the work of Mother Nature, that the appreciation of human art is but a reflection of nature itself. They actively pursued knowledge, visiting museums and mineral galleries, relentlessly refined their taste, learning all they could.

Thirty-five years later, minerals are still their passion. Their intention is to share with fellow collectors this passion, to encourage the collecting and preservation of mineral specimens as works of art. By displaying minerals in their gallery where others can view, compare, and enjoy aesthetic mineral specimens, they hope to promote mineral collecting right alongside the more traditional fine arts of painting and sculpture. They like to say that they are providing collectors with the very finest creations from the past 4 BILLION YEARS.

Their legacy as mineral dealers and collectors are the specimens seen in their gallery and pictured in their book series. The collections they have helped build are constant reminders of the beauty and wonder of the natural world.

Naomi Sarna is an avid collector of gems and mineral specimens. Her gem carvings and jewels with carved gems will be on display midNovember 2019 at the Wilensky Gallery.

A SERENE ART DE VIVRE

In Lausanne & Montreux Riviera, in the heart of the Lake Geneva Region.

©Maude Rion

THE SWISS RIVIERA

Rare are the areas in the world that have attracted so many illustrious names throughout history. The Montreux Riviera is among them. Royalty, artists, musicians, painters and famous personalities have come here, elected this blessed spot on Earth as one of their favorites and stayed for a large portion of their lives. It is no wonder: upon arrival in Montreux you immediately feel there is a special vibration here.

First of all, the scenery is simply breathtaking. The majesty of the Alps, the peacefulness of Lake Geneva, the characteristic Belle Epoque architecture and the terrace vineyards elate your spirit and put your soul at ease. You know you are in for a treat. A small stroll in the “Jardins des Palais” facing the famous Fairmont Montreux Palace, lets you take in the stunning views and realize how charged with history the scene is. Statues of the most distinguished jazz artists adorn the lawn. Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Carlos Santana welcome you cheerfully and remind you this is an inspiring place. Step into the palace and pages from history are all around you. Photographs from the private collection of Claude Nobs - founder of the Jazz festival in 1967, fill the walls of the Montreux Jazz Café along with vintage paraphernalia accumulated for more than 40 years.

Visit the hotel itself and the historical grandeur strikes even harder. Since its opening in 1906, the Fairmont Montreux Palace has witnessed some major events that have all left their marks inside the premises. The hotel architecture itself bears the signs of the prestigious past. The large corridors enabled ladies wearing crinolines to cross each other comfortably. The moldings around each room door are the original ones, over a century old. The “Salle des fêtes”, where high society danced, still shines bright with its 1.5-ton crystal chandelier hovering 8 meters above the eminent guests. Nabokov lived here 16 years, Richard Strauss created symphonies here, Deep Purple composed Smoke on the Water here, Freddie Mercury and Queen stayed here every time they could, Quincy Jones comes here for every Montreux Jazz Festival since its creation. To say the place is inspiring is an understatement. History speaks for itself.

Just a short bus hop away is the Territet funicular railway. The 7-minute ride permits one to grasp how exceptional the geographical situation of the Riviera is. It climbs up to Glion on extremely steep slopes. From the 687 meters high perch the view imposes silence. The Empress Sissi loved this spot. Follow her steps down to the village to take in the steepness of the hill, the beauty of the terrace vineyards, the smell of Mediterranean forest species. Palm trees, olive trees, rosemary bushes accompany you along these winding paths into the Old Montreux. The 13th century Saint Vincent church offers a panoramic view of the medieval village. Stroll down the tiny cobble-stoned streets and stairs, and marvel at the colorful narrow houses all the way down to the lake shores and its Belle Epoque architecture buildings.

Another destination that helps understand the attraction of the region is the Chaplin museum in Corsier-surVevey, a small village above Vevey itself. Charlie Chaplin elected residence here in 1948 in the Manoir de Ban. The visit is like entering the intimacy of Chaplin. You will learn who the man was. You will understand the peacefulness he had discovered here in the middle of his park, where century-old trees echo the calm of the mountains and the lake in the background. Words are too feeble to express the serenity of the panorama. The visit is very emotional, as if meeting an old friend and reminiscing over his larger-than-life personality. His humility and profound humanism can be felt in every detail. It reflects perfectly what the Riviera Art de vivre is all about.

Head back to Vevey and wander the old village streets by the lake. Discover the richness of Swiss local crafts at the Bravo Boutique, an original concept store where you will find both women and men’s fashion items, wooden games and original crafts while tasting local products heartfully cooked in-house. It stands in an old ballroom at the center of the village dating back to the 1930’s, with a historical Art Deco glass dome, and organizes events and art expositions. A truly different space. Of course, you will also find great shopping opportunities for famous Swiss mechanical watch brands at Lionel Meylan, an inescapable local address. Then push along to the Lake Promenade… it is so peaceful that it urges you to take your time. Walk slowly alongside the quiet lake. Take in the gorgeous scenery. Breathe in the calm disrupted only by children’s laughter as they play explorers on the rocks by the lake, or the cackling and crying of ducks, swans, water-hens or seagulls flying low over the water. Time flies by gently here. It enables the Riviera spirit to sink in. As the sun slowly goes down, red, orange and pink hues set the sky, the lake and the mountains ablaze. Airplane contrails crisscross the sky as distant witnesses of life at another pace. A far-away, hard-to-relate to pace at such a serene moment. This is the Montreux Riviera effect!

To remind you that the region also offers earthly pleasures, a great 8-meter high stainless-steel fork – designed by Jean-Pierre Zaugg in 1995 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Alimentarium Food Museum – sticks proudly out of the calm waters. Indeed, gastronomy also defines the privileged Riviera’s Art de vivre. A stone’s throw away you will find the celebrated 3C restaurant of the legendary Hotel des Trois Couronnes - one of the oldest palaces in Switzerland. The neo-classic architecture of 1842 has been preserved throughout the renovations. It is a 71-room hotel with a soul, where every detail is a historical landmark. It perpetuates the tradition of creativity that has punctuated its long history be it in arts, music, culinary arts or wines. The calmness is soothing, further enhanced by the marble fountains of the lobby that resonate throughout the hotel thanks to its characteristic light shaft architecture. It redefines the sense of well-being.

The restaurant 3C offers a superb cuisine where local products are sublimated by the inventiveness of the Michelin-starred chef Lionel Rodriguez. His cooking is refined and light, yet generous, with Mediterranean notes. A wide variety of local wines from the terrace vineyards of Lavaux, a UNESCO world heritage site, are proposed. Discover the rich pallet of tastes these wines develop from Dézaley, Epesses, Calamin or Saint Saphorin. A great moment for any wine enthusiast.

There are so many attractions here that it is an all-year round destination, but if you still need an exceptional reason to come, the Fête des Vignerons (taking place this year from July 18th to August 11th) is THE event not to be missed. It only happens every 20-25 years. The first one was in 1797. The latest one occurred in 1999. This unique spectacle has been recognized by UNESCO and placed on “The list of intangible cultural heritage”. A celebration of tradition, men and nature like no other. A summary of everything the Montreux Riviera embodies.

LAUSANNE, HISTORICAL LANDMARK OF LAKE GENEVA

Sitting proudly less than 30 minutes away from the Riviera is Lausanne, the olympic capital and second largest city on the lake. In 15 B.C. the Romans identified Lousanna as a village at the crossroads of great communication routes, from Italy to France and Northern Europe. Visionaries as they were, the Romans understood the advantages of the surroundings. On the lake for easy transport from the Rhône, and in the middle of three gentle hills - easy to link with bridges, it was perfect to spread Roman influence at the time. Lausanne developed with commercial exchanges until Medieval times and expanded greatly in the 19th century with industrialization. This explains today’s attractiveness of the city: it is as much an economic pole as a cultural destination. It is bustling with activity and imbued with historical landmarks. The Panoramas Walk offers 6 breathtaking views of this exceptional geographical situation. There are so many monuments, sites, restaurants and hotels to see that a guided tour is actually a great idea.

Start at the “Great Bridge”, the first of the three bridges binding the city together. It provides a good overview of Lausanne’s topography and its three main hills: La Cité, Saint Laurent and Saint François. It was built in 1840, above the remains of a Roman aqueduct. It embodies the early industrial development of Lausanne that led to touristic growth in the 19th century when palaces started to appear. The historical monuments are countless. One of the most famous is the Tour Bel-Air, a splendid example of Art Deco architecture dating from the 30’s which was the very first ‘skyscraper’ in Switzerland. It echoes the queen of the town - The Cathedral NotreDame of Lausanne, one of the greatest gothic monuments in Switzerland. It was constructed from 1170 to 1235 and is more than 100 meters long. It is imposing yet sober. It holds close to 800 years of history! From the 1220 almost-Pagan rosacea of the South transept, to the monumental church organs from the American manufacturer C.B. Fisk - installed in 2003. The latter alone is worth the detour, spreading its 7000 pipes like giant angel wings. From the East of the cathedral, the views of the lake, the city roofs, the Alps to the South and the Jura to the North are awe-inspiring. Just to the right of this overwhelming panorama is the start of the Market Stairs. The 174 steps, dating back to the 14th century, will take you down to the town hall through a medieval time warp. The winding stairs

go down the slope between narrow houses and cobble-stoned streets lined with bars, shops and restaurants. It feels like a museum but is a vibrant city, full of life and culture, and infused with that peaceful way of life. Once the ‘Place de la Palud’ is reached, wait for the clock with automatons to unveil its story depicting the wine tradition of the region. A unique example of synthesis of secular traditions of watchmaking and winemaking. Lausanne is full of surprises.

The only way to end the stroll is to go down to the Geneva Lake in Ouchy. The Alps are everywhere in front of you: the canton of Vaud and the beginning of the Valais, as well as the French Haute Savoie facing you. In the foreground, the vineyards terrace of Lavaux – another UNESCO World Heritage site – is just a stone’s throw away. It is a rare scenery. Once more, the serenity is irresistible. This is what makes this region so fantastic to travel. Add to that its renowned taste for good food and wine and it becomes blatantly obvious why so many people come here…and so often, stay.

Indeed, gastronomy is a prominent asset of the region and there are numerous outstanding restaurants, that cater to the needs of even the most discerning travelers. The Brasserie of Montbenon is one of these eminent addresses. It is set in the old Belle Epoque casino of Montbenon. Erected in 1908, the building is radiant with Art Nouveau style. The 10 meters high cupola is fascinating and the adjoining terrace in a peaceful park overlooking the lake, make for a perfect spot to start the city’s visit. A delightful, hearty lunch, accompanied by local wines like the fresh Johaniter from the Domaine de la Capitainerie in the Demeter appellation that started with a fresh acidity and quickly evolved in to a wide, lingering fruitiness, reveals how wine tourism is inherent to the canton of Vaud. They know their wines here and it is worth discovering them.

Moreover, the 5 star hotels and palaces are phenomenal. The recently renovated Royal Savoy Hotel***** dates back to 1909 but was completely revamped from 2009 to 2015. It stands between the city heart and the lake and offers elegant, modern rooms with lake views. The Sky Lounge unfolds a 360° view of the whole surroundings. They also propose a penthouse if you feel like having your own floor and a terrace all for yourself.

If you want to stay in a palace imbued with history, the Beau-Rivage Lausanne Palace, erected in 1861, is the place to be. The monumental lobby sets the tone with marble and decorated columns along the 4 flights of the light shaft. This has been a high society destination for over 150 years. The Belle Epoque vibration has inspired and soothed royalty, presidents and countless artists and actors. The 8 presidential suites have been “homes away from home” for the most prestigious of celebrities. Irmgard Müller, director of the hotel from 1969 to 2011, had the fabulous idea to keep the endless archives of the hotel and decorate the corridors with them, ensuring its rich history is all around. The Edouard Sandoz room is a monument of architecture in itself, adorned with a magnificent domed stain-glassed window from the Belle Epoque. This is where the Peace Treaty of Lausanne was signed in 1923! Indeed, it is a peace haven by the lake, facing the mountains, at the feet of the city. The palace is also famous for the two-Michelin stars restaurant Anne-Sophie Pic at BeauRivage, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with a flurry of surprises.

If food experiences are what you are looking for, another option is the Lausanne Palace, yet another historical landmark from the city, dating back to 1915. It is located in the heart of the town and offers a modern, urban, lively alternative. Both in their Brasserie du Chêne and their one Michelin-star Table d’Edgard, with chef Edgard Bovier, the hotel proposes exclusive dining inside the kitchen! An experience like no other to witness the precise work done, the skills of the kitchens’ seconds and the masterful direction of the chefs. For wine lovers, a table in the Cellar, amidst the 800 exhilarating wine references, is available for tastings and events. For even more exceptional venues, one of only three in the world - the Krug Salon welcomes you to the Table d’Edgard for yet another unique treat for your tasting buds. Known to be the capital of Swiss Gastronomy, the restaurants in the Lake Geneva Region collectively hold an impressive 1365 GaultMillau points and 17 Michelin stars. A comprehensive and searchable list of this gourmet paradise can be found at: www.myvaud.ch/adv1

Finally, a trip through Switzerland would not be complete without a taste of Swiss watchmaking. Watch connoisseurs will have to go to Junod on the nearby Place SaintFrançois. It is one of the oldest watches and jewelry stores in Switzerland. Family-owned since 1867, the fifth generation still runs it with the original passion. Visit the Private Watch collection and immerse yourself in five centuries of watchmaking. Discover unique timepieces, like the prototype of the first Jaeger-Lecoultre Reverso from 1930 (before its original release in 1931!). It is a watch lover’s paradise: didactic, passionate and fun. None of the vintage gems are for sale, but you will be able to also see the latest offerings from all the renowned manufacturers they distribute: Jaeger-Lecoultre, Omega, Audemars Piguet, Chopard, Blancpain, Zénith, or Ulysse Nardin.

With or without a Swiss timekeeper, you will leave this region soothed, relaxed and enchanted by so many memories of great historical places, unforgettable tasting experiences and with that indescribable sense of well-being that the majestic scenery etches in your mind and soul forever. The great news is that next time you come, it will still be there. This serene Swiss Art de vivre is here to stay.

Completion Centre of excellence

Basel, Switzerland is considered as one of the world’s leading places for completion, refurbishment and maintenance of private aircraft. Jet Aviation, which has been crafting aircraft interiors since 1977 and counts over 200 completions to its name, is now ready and able to induct large projects such as the Airbus Corporate Jet ACJ350 XWB.

On 21st November Jet Aviation celebrated the grand opening of a new wide-body hangar in Basel. Designed to help meet increased demand for wide-body completions and refurbishments, ‘Hangar 3’ is capable of housing several wide- and narrow-body projects simultaneously. The company, which started its own dedicated design department to inspire its customers, forming the foundation of what the Basel Design Studio is today, has long been recognized as one of the leading facilities in the world for design, outfitting and refurbishment of private and executive aircraft.

SPACE IS LUXURY

Space is the ultimate luxury in aircraft interior design and the ample space of a wide-body aircraft gives designers the greatest scope of freedom.

The Airbus 350, with a cabin measuring over 50 meters long and over five meters wide lends itself particularly well for design. The team at Jet Aviation Design Studio has created a concept that incorporates not only the increased space but also the extensive range that the ACJ350 offers. They considered how to use these elements to provide a customer with the ultimate comfort in the air, with the intent to create a modern and contemporary interior that felt more residential than traditional aircraft design. As technology allows aircraft to stay longer in the air, covering much larger ranges than they ever did before, (one only has to remember the much covered launch of a 19-hours-long commercial flight Shanghai- New York earlier this fall,) passengers on board must not only be entertained but also reassured, and nothing equals the feeling of being comfortably settled and travelling in a home-like environment.

THREE DIFFERENT STYLES OF DESIGN

With this in mind, the designers were keen on giving their customers options early on. For this reason they developed three different design styles of a bedroom within the brief. This area is often more personal and private for the owner. The aesthetics there would often set the tone for the rest of the design, which varies from modern and masculine, to contemporary, and finally to a more residential, classic style. On this aircraft, the master bedroom is situated forward of the main entrance for increased privacy.

In each variation, furniture was designed to appear free-standing, with invisible push latches rather than conventional aircraft fixtures, and statement pieces such as the chaise longue and deep sofa in the bedroom, and a modern Art Deco marquetry floor in the entrance, to add a luxurious home-like feel. Personal touches were integrated throughout, whether artwork designed to link with their personal collection or a custom lamp similar to one in the owner’s home.

A light colour theme featuring cream and sandy hues alongside warm and cool greys with blue accents runs across the entire concept. The bed frame is finished in cream leather with contrast stitching which mirrors the cabinet drawers, seats and surrounding furniture parts in the room. A cashmere and silk carpet, with a carving pattern replicating a sensory feeling when walking barefoot complements the sandcoloured veneer of the cabinet doors.

Detail and texture is introduced in pillows and throws, cabinets finishing and precious stones, such as an Onyx Vanilla Adouci, used as a statement artwork behind the bed. Being part of a completions centre, the designers work directly with engineering and production experts when developing a concept, working together to approach the different challenges that a new airframe offers from the outset and testing the concepts to ensure that the finished interior fully reflects the level of luxury, functionality and personalisation that customers expect.

Lighting also plays a key role. The A350 offers large windows, increasing natural light. Here, the design has placed significant emphasis on ambient and accent lighting used to enhance the residential feel. Throughout the cabin spotlights can be dimmed to emphasize certain features, while other lighting is dimmed to create drama.

Humidity, heating and zonal air conditioning have also been considered to ensure maximum comfort for passengers spending longer time in the air.

FLEXIBLE VIP INTERIOR

The living space is flexible, featuring several different seating and dining configurations. Curtains can separate the forward and aft of the cabin and the large screen can be covered by artwork when not in use to change the ambiance.

The aft lounge area can also be converted into two guest-sleeping areas with en-suite bathrooms.

The A350 offers customers a spectacular new option for VIP air travel and the challenge for designers is to consider how to build the most comfortable and bespoke interior inside it.

VAULT V1+ CTI

VAULT has announced another unique addition to the V1 collection: The V1+ CTi. Time is a personal matter. Never more so than when it comes to your own timepiece that treasures the hours and minutes of your day. Customisation has always been part of VAULT's core mission, but this time, they have taken it to another level. Not only are you able to choose the colours, engravings and materials on the V1+ CTi, but you can also commission a bespoke case material.

The V1+ CTi is characterised by a unique connection of material: carbon and titanium. The carbon titanium composite is one-of-a-kind and has been developed specifically for VAULT. Having pursued this idea together with a client, their goal was to unite the unique features of both materials.

VAULT Founder and CEO – Mark Schwarz explained; “As far as we know, no watchmaker has used a composite of carbon and titanium to create a case before. Time is precious. That's why VAULT doesn't play around when it comes to time. We take as much time as needed for the things we value. Case in point is our new V1+ CTi. The handmade

manufacture of our newest model has been the most complex so far.

Our signature carbon titanium composite was developed by our partner Fatcarbon. The very thin prepreg carbon layers and fine titanium powder were alternately handlayered and baked under pressure to form a solid piece of material. RGB X-Tech shaped this thrilling yet complex material into our watch case. As both components, carbon and titanium, make different demands to the manufacturing, finding the right tool was crucial. A specialised CNC milling machine did the job. So far so good. But do you know how long that took? A mesmerising 32 hours of machine running time! To finish off the V1+ CTi, we optimised the design, reengineered the hour gear transmission and teamed up with the talented watchmaker Marc Jenni. He developed a new rotor that is lighter and increases the wearing comfort. Good things take time. The VAULT V1+ CTi characterises that more than any model has ever before. Going from a simple idea to our signature connection of material and finally to a brand-new watch took several hands and a lot of time. That's what we do at VAULT: We take our time and create novelties for you.”

THE PININFARINA BATTISTA ELECTRIC HYPERCAR

This is it! Legendary Italian design studio Pininfarina’s highly anticipated electric hypercar is here, and the wait was completely worth it. Called the Battista after the company’s founder, it is not only the first creation from Automobili Pininfarina but also the most powerful production road car ever to come from Italy. The EV hypercar is powered by technology from Croatian EV maker Rimac, which uses individual electric motors for each wheel with a combined power output of a whopping 1900 horsepower and 1696 lb-ft of torque. Powering the electric motors is a Rimacdeveloped T-shaped liquid-cooled 120 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that is placed right behind the driver at the lowest possible point in the chassis to keep the center of gravity as low as possible. All of the 1696 lb-ft of torque is available instantly and is controlled by a torque vectoring system distributing thrust to each wheel independently for maximum performance.

To make the hypercar as light as possible and offset the weight of the battery pack, just about every component is made of carbon fiber and other lightweight materials. It uses a full carbon-fiber monocoque, a carbon roof, and a rear carbon subframe. As a result, the Battista can reach a top speed of 218 miles per hour and hit 62 mph in less than 2 seconds. Automobili Pininfarina also claims that the hypercar can accelerate to 186mph in less than 12 seconds and on a full charge it has an estimated range of 280 miles. Ultimately, the Battista has to drive like a hypercar not an electric car,” Christian Jung, chief technical officer, Automobili Pininfarina said. “The two biggest technical challenges for us are in integrating heavy batteries into a carbon structure and how we apply the car’s control systems.”

In terms of design, the front has a strong resemblance to the Ferrari Sergio Concept, while the rear has a futuristic look to it thanks to the long strip of tail lights placed underneath the spoiler. Inside the cabin, the dash features three driver-facing digital screens which control all functions and features. The company will build only 150 examples of the electric hypercar with the production beginning in 2020. The exact pricing is yet to be revealed.

CASIO G-SHOCK

Remember the all-gold ‘Dream Project’ G-Shock DW5000, a concept watch by Casio revealed back in 2015? To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the iconic digital watch, the Japanese brand has brought the concept to life by revealing the G-D5000-9JR –an 18-karat yellow gold piece which has a price-tag of ¥7.7 million JPY (approximately $69,500 USD), making it the most expensive watch by Casio to date. Understandably, Casio has left the iconic design relatively untouched, which means it still comes with the same retro aesthetic with a trademarked Tough Solar charging system inside.

According to the information released, the anniversary edition will feature 38 different time zones, an LED backlight, and their Multi-Band 6 technology for automatic time adjustment that uses radio wave tech from six stations around the world for split-second time correction. Only 35 examples will be made and you’ll have to file a pre-order request on Casio’s website.

70 | UNIQUE FOUR TOURBILLONS ORBITING THE EARTH

Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey have shown creative daring and boldness in uniting their second Fundamental Invention, the Quadruple Tourbillon, with their ground breaking interpretation of the GMT with its outsized rotating globe. Displaying three time zones along with a universal time function, this exceptional timepiece is distinguished by its threedimensional architecture created with extreme attention to fine craftsmanship. A unique edition of 66 pieces in total, the first 11 of which are in white gold.

Huygen’s invention of the hairspring in 1675 was a milestone in the watchmakers’ long-running quest for precision. It did not however eliminate the issue of gravity, which is detrimental to the timing of watches, particularly in vertical positions. To seek to remedy this, Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823) conceived the idea of housing the regulating organ (hairspring, balance wheel and escapement) within a rotating cage. By turning around its axis, generally in one minute, the cage carried the ‘heart’ of the watch through different successive positions, thereby averaging out timing variations. The tourbillon was born (1801). Striving to improve chronometry still further, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey re-imagined the tourbillon principle and then developed their first three Fundamental Inventions:

the Double Tourbillon 30° (2004), the Quadruple Tourbillon (2005) and the Tourbillon 24 Secondes (2006).

In their GMT Quadruple Tourbillon, the two watchmakers have chosen to revisit their second invention and to take it even further by combining it with a multiple time-zone display. This is a nod to both history and technology, since the ingenious device created to compensate for the effects of gravity… actually gravitates around the Earth – four times over!

A highly complex mechanism

Working on the principle that the more different positions the regulating organ moves through, the more precise the timekeeping will be, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey invented the Quadruple Tourbillon with a spherical differential. Right from the original idea the concept was clear. While coupling four separate tourbillons would have been challenging, they sought a more compact solution. To save space in all three dimensions, they chose to construct the tourbillons in pairs within a unique system of compact cages, an extremely challenging feat. Each of these two systems is modelled on the Double Tourbillon 30°, with a first cage rotating in one minute and angled at 30°, fitted inside a second upright cage

performing a full rotation in four minutes. The combination of the inclination of the inner cage and the different rotational speeds of the two cages focuses on cancelling out the timing variations due to the earth’s gravitational attraction in all the usual positions a wristwatch can adopt, particularly in stable positions. The spherical differential serves to average the timing of the two autonomous oscillators and thus improve chronometric performance, a system for which two patents have been filed.

Bringing the planet to the wrist

Having mastered the tourbillon, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey have continued to investigate and reinterpret other horological mechanisms, notably a practical and much appreciated complication: simultaneous multiple time zones display. In 2011, the two Inventor Watchmakers expressed their own vision of this modern day function in the ground breaking timepiece aptly named the GMT, more recently joined by the GMT Earth. In this patented system, the second time zone indication on a separate subdial is paired with a universal time display providing an intuitive reading of the time around the world thanks to a world first: an outsized globe completing one full rotation every 24 hours, following planet Earth itself.

UNIQUE | 71

An impressive three-dimensional sight

In bringing the Quadruple Tourbillon and the GMT mechanisms together, Greubel Forsey not only accomplished a major technical feat that led to the creation of a new handwound calibre comprising 805 parts, including three fast-rotating barrels. The Inventor Watchmakers also tackled this challenge from an architectural angle to create a timepiece in which the three-dimensional approach is expressed on many levels. The main hours/ minutes dial between 1 and 2 o’clock forms the highest point of the dial, where it is underlined by the subtle asymmetry of the case and complemented by a 72-hour chronometric power-reserve display. The next level is it at 4 o’clock, with the coaxial small seconds and second time zone display which is adjustable in one-hour increments by means of a pusher. Located between 8 and 9 o’clock, observers can admire the spectacular sight of the Earth in motion, surrounded by a fixed 24 hours ring around the Equator and displaying local time for all the longitudes – simultaneously taking account of the day/night indicator (on respectively light/dark zones). A lateral window in the asymmetrical section of the case provides an unprecedented view of the Equator and the Southern hemisphere. The four tourbillons gravitate in two pairs on either side of the blue planet, each featuring an open and transparent construction, secured by flat black polished bridges and adorned with gold chatons as well as hand-polished bevelling and countersinks. A truly enchanting and exquisitely light choreography.

A practical but refined case back Universal time is visible through the case back, with a fixed 24-hour scale bearing day/night zones and a disk with three-letter abbreviations of 24 cities representing the various time zones. This disk also distinguishes between the time zones that implement Summer Time (Daylight Saving Time) appearing in a light colour; and those that do not (shown on a dark backdrop). The case back also provides a chance to admire the Quadruple Tourbillon as well as frosted bridges with jewels set in gold chatons. The two complex asymmetrical convex sapphire crystals protecting the dial and case back also called for the utmost expertise.

This masterpiece of contemporary aesthetics comes in a unique edition of 66 pieces. The first edition of 11 of which are in white gold, numbered from 01/11 to 11/11 on a plate in the centre of the dial.

The GMT Quadruple Tourbillon: a new encounter between technical complexity and aesthetic audacity, signed Greubel Forsey.

Having always been intrigued by powerful V-twins, none impressed the creator at moose motodesign more so than the Yamaha Virago XV920 motorcycle. With one from 1982 and another from a year later, the poland-based studio transformed the cafe racer into what they call a ‘fighter cafe’. As well as being influenced by the vintage racers designed by Mehmet Doruk Erdem, the two contrasting custom bikes represent the struggle between good and evil.

Both moose motodesign XV920 motorcycles appear with an aggressive, muscular silhouette. this is showcased by the raw, elegant seats in Italian tan leather, which cantilever and extend the dynamically flowing body line onward from the raised tank. At the front, the headlamps are decorated with a racing-style

cross whilst at the rear, the LED lights provide a dramatic image when seemingly floating in the dark. All unnecessary structural parts on the bodywork were removed, before being cleaned and covered with a coating in each bike’s respective color – black or white.

The motorcycles’ handlebars highlight their minimalist style. When viewed from above, the clean form focuses the rider’s attention on a simple Koso Pro digital dash. The tank itself has been covered with a gloss color, protected, and then completed with hand-painted pinstripes. This color then matches the Sachs rear shocks at the back but not the durable Kawasaki front suspension or 310mm double brake discs and Tokico calipers.

With Le Rouge Liquide, Nicolas Degennes who is the Make-up and Colour Artistic Director at Givenchy wanted to create something brand new, playing around with design codes, textures and application techniques. Redefining Riverside Living on Melbourne’s Yarra

Melbourne is known as one of the world’s premier river cities –but a new development is about to set a new standard for riverside living in Australia’s southern capital

NEW HORIZONS FOR AN EVOLVING CITY

The modern cities of the world are never stagnant – they’re always reinventing themselves. Similarly, today’s urban citizens understand that the cycle of regeneration and renewal is continual.

Take Melbourne for example. Founded as a fledgling settlement on the banks of the Yarra River in 1835, now, over 180 years later, the city is one of the world’s great metropolises. Where once there stood huts and tents, skyscrapers and gleaming towers now soar.

Throughout all of this, the river has been a constant, providing crucial water supplies for agriculture in the early years, and then a vital trade connection to the nearby Port Philip Bay as the settlement grew. Nowadays, the Yarra is part of the identity of this great city, with Melburnians flocking to its banks in the same way that Sydneysiders flock to their harbour.

In this sense, riverside locations have always been at a premium; so when the opportunity came along to reinvigorate a disused tract of land on the Yarra, Connie Wu didn’t hesitate, recognising the opportunity to contribute to Melbourne’s ongoing urban metamorphosis.

Ms Wu, Executive Director of Century Group Aus, has lived in Melbourne since her early teenage years, and understood the significance of the site on the corner of Spencer and Flinders streets, which was the former home of the Melbourne Convention Centre before its demolition in 2016.

The setting is one of the last true riverfronts on the Yarra, and as such, Ms Wu knew the important role it would play in giving new life to this part of her city.

Century Group Aus’ plans for the site comprise two 26-storey terraced towers and a third 33-storey tower, along with a 2,500 square metre retail and plaza area that will reactivate the public realm along the river, with the project to be known as Flinders Bank.

“At Flinders Bank we’re aiming to revitalise the southern edge of the Melbourne CBD, opening up a new lifestyle destination for both Melburnians and visitors,” she explains.

“Our vision is one of luxurious living, inspired by the Yarra and Melbourne’s enviable lifestyle offerings, and will celebrate the best of Melbourne through tranquil riverfront residences, a fivestar hotel, vibrant retail and curated dining.”

With completion expected in late 2021, the precinct will feature 663 luxury apartments across the three towers, with Towers 1 and 3 to contain a mix of luxury one, two and three-bedroom residences and a selection of stunning penthouses.

Meanwhile, Tower 2 will also contain apartments, but with the distinctive addition of 168 premium hotel rooms across the building’s first 11 floors.

AN AUSTRALIAN FIRST: MELBOURNE WELCOMES ST REGIS

Excitingly, it was announced in late 2018 that the five-star luxury hotel at Flinders Bank will be operated by Marriott International, the world’s largest hotel group. Marriott is set to bring its luxury St Regis brand to Flinders Bank – making Melbourne the location of Australia’s first ever St Regis hotel.

One of the world’s most prestigious hotel brands, a hallmark of the St. Regis experience is its famed butler service, which ensures each guest receives firstclass personal attention during their stay, including everything from welcome drinks to garment pressing and unpacking services.

Another symbol of a St Regis hotel stay is the food and beverage experience, with impeccable fine dining and inventive drinks – the brand pioneered popular cocktail The Bloody Mary after all – providing memories that last long after guests depart.

St Regis also boasts luxury getaways in some of the most exotic corners of the globe, including Bora Bora, Bali, Mallorca, Mauritius and the Maldives.

In keeping with the brand’s high benchmark, the St. Regis Melbourne will feature interiors created by world-leading hotel design studio Chada, while the hotel’s 168 lavish rooms will enjoy either Yarra River or prime CBD skyline views. In addition, a range of specialty suites will cater to the most exclusive of clientele.

Ms Wu says St. Regis’ selection of Melbourne for its first Australian hotel is further recognition of the Victorian capital’s continued status as one of the world’s most liveable cities.

“We’re deeply honoured and excited that Flinders Bank will be home to one of the most exceptional hotel and hospitality experiences in Australia, through the St. Regis Melbourne,” she said.

“The brand is a perfect fit for Flinders Bank, which we believe will offer the ultimate in luxury experiences for guests and as residents, as well as providing a fitting gateway into the world’s most liveable city.

“With its breathtaking views of the Yarra River, resort-style amenity and landmark architecture, the St Regis Melbourne will soon become Australia’s premier tourist destination.”

UNIQUE | 95

PREMIUM RIVERSIDE RESIDENCES

The St Regis Melbourne will also offer a limited number of Flinders Bank residents Hotel Facilities Club memberships, providing true integration with selected St Regis amenities such as an indoor swimming pool, steam room, spa, sauna and change rooms.

“These types of offerings are designed to meet the growing buyer demand for centrally-located luxury apartments partnered with five-star hotel-style amenity,” adds Ms Wu.

Luxury amenities on offer to residents at Flinders Bank include on-site gymnasiums, residents’ lounges that embrace Melbourne’s skyline views, private dining rooms where residents can host exclusive dinner parties and functions, wine tasting rooms, a theatre, a landscaped podium courtyard and even a garden room.

Downstairs in the ground floor retail podium, Flinders Bank will collaborate with some of Melbourne’s most popular food and café operators to create memorable dining experiences. With Melbourne already renowned as the culinary capital of Australia, the arrival of Flinders Bank will extend this reputation by bringing the best of the city’s dining to its doorstep.

But it’s not just the superior amenities and dining that elevate Flinders Bank from the crowd. The luxury extends into the development’s residences as well, which have been designed with spacious open floor plans that maximise a sense of space. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels surround the living spaces, ensuring the residences at Flinders Bank take full advantage of their exceptional views, no matter the perspective. Residences with an eastern aspect will enjoy vistas that capture protected views of the Yarra River and Melbourne’s sparkling city lights, while western and southern outlooks take in Port Phillip Bay and the ever-changing Melbourne cityscape.

Flinders Bank’s residences incorporate seamless kitchen and living areas of outstanding craftsmanship, with bespoke joinery items including curved island benches featuring stone benchtops. Herringbone pattern timber flooring in the living areas flows into wool carpets in luxurious and spacious bedrooms that feature beautifully crafted walk-in robes. Opulent bathroom designs celebrate top-of-the-range fittings and fixtures, not to mention elegant custom-designed basins.

Completing the picture at Flinders Bank are the development’s exclusive penthouses, which will deliver panoramic views against a backdrop of beautiful finishes and sculptured details that deliver a level of luxury perfectly suited to the most discerning of buyers. Penthouse bedrooms are imagined as a sanctuary of extravagant beauty, framed by inviting outdoor terraces.

Flinders Bank’s penthouses also offer much larger floorplates, ensuring flowing, open spaces and accommodating exclusive extras such as butler’s pantries adjoining kitchens, and freestanding baths in bathrooms. Each penthouse is also allocated between two and four car spaces.

WORLD CLASS DESIGN: WORKING WITH THE BEST OF THE BEST

The design of some of the most exclusive residences in Australia requires a specialist – and Century Group Aus has engaged one of the best in the business. Highly-awarded, multi-disciplinary international design firm Fender Katsalidis is responsible for both the interior design and architectural design of Flinders Bank.

With a focus on multi-residential and hotel developments, Fender Katsalidis is known not just for design quality, but also civic contribution and economic mindfulness – important factors at Flinders Bank, which will be a highly visible contribution to Melbourne’s evolving cityscape.

Fender Katsalidis’ design envisions three towers with their own unique facade and character featuring variations of curved and undulating glass. Indeed, Flinders Bank’s curvilinear forms will mirror its riverside location, creating an instantly recognisable landmark on Melbourne’s skyline.

According to Karl Fender OAM, Founding Partner and Managing Director of Fender Katsalidis, Flinders Bank will redefine riverside living in Melbourne.

“Flinders Bank will become a signature development for Melbourne –combining effortless luxury with flexible, personalised design,” he explains.

“A key aim of the project is to create a vibrant new place in the heart of the city – and on the edge of the Yarra.

“The new retail spaces, pedestrianised plaza and five-star hotel, combined with some of Melbourne’s finest premium apartments, will make this precinct an enviable place to visit, play and live.”

Century Group Aus has worked closely with Fender Katsalidis to ensure Flinders Bank will have a positive effect on the surrounding landscape, says Ms Wu.

“The development’s masterplan aims to reduce overshadowing on the Yarra River through its stepped facade,” she confirms.

“This will have fantastic benefits for residents as it has allowed the design of

apartments with substantial outdoor areas that take in some of the most spectacular river, city and bay views in Melbourne.”

The street appeal of the buildings has also been carefully considered, she says.

“The Spencer Street frontage will have a waterfall effect – achieved by careful positioning of a cascading glass façade which aims to soften the building’s presence on this busy street and provide an interesting interface.

“Meanwhile the North Tower has true winter gardens with sections of louvred façade – this is rarely done properly in Melbourne and provides a highly flexible living space, where acoustic wind and heat conditions can be effectively turned on or off to suit the occupant.”

The delivery of such an architecturally varied and notable project is set to require significant expertise and skill – something Century Group Aus can draw on courtesy of its international parent companies, Exhibition and Travel Group (ETG) and China Century Group.

Formed as a partnership between these two transformative Chinese development companies, Century Group Aus launched in 2016 with a focus on the Australian hospitality and residential sectors. Although Flinders Bank marks the company’s first Australian venture, Century Group Aus still has plenty of history to draw on, with both ETG and China Century Group responsible for some of the world’s most significant development projects.

For instance, in 2013 ETG unveiled the 1.76 million square-metre New Century Global Centre in Chengdu – the world’s largest freestanding building, capable of housing the equivalent of 20 Sydney Opera Houses. The Centre is home to an array of offices and shopping malls, not to mention a 14-screen IMAX Cineplex and an ice-skating rink large enough to hold international skating competitions.

Meanwhile, China Century Group, headquartered in Beijing, has invested in and developed numerous residential real estate projects in China, with a total construction size of over 1 million square metres. The company is currently developing a condominium project in San Francisco’s Sunset District, as well as a number of office, industrial and commercial combination parks in major cities across China.

All of this adds up to some serious expertise at the disposal of Century Group Aus, says Ms Wu, with this development experience set to be carried through into the delivery of the $800 million Flinders Bank project.

“Flinders Bank will become a new 21st century precinct for the city of Melbourne, and as such it should take its cue from the best of modern architecture and design.

“Fortunately, our business has plenty of exceptional benchmarks to draw inspiration from, thanks to our parent companies’ significant achievements.”

A MULTITUDE OF LIFESTYLE OPTIONS ON THE DOORSTEP

Flinders Bank also benefits from its close proximity to some of Melbourne's most recognisable landmarks on both sides of the Yarra.

The new Melbourne Convention Centre now lies across the river on Melbourne’s South Wharf, alongside the modern venues of the Crown Entertainment Complex. Meanwhile the classic grandeur of Flinders Street Station and its variety of major transport options lies just moments away, ensuring Flinders Bank is ideally positioned, says Ms Wu.

“Southern Cross and Flinders Street Stations are both within 10 minutes’ walk, while the Melbourne CBD Free Tram Zone is on the doorstep, providing a direct link to Melbourne’s public transport network.

“This means residents and visitors to Flinders Bank will enjoy effortless connections into the city and beyond, while the river is an ever-present setting that also provides kilometres of walking paths up and down the city.”

Indeed, Flinders Bank is in easy walking distance to some of Australia’s most famous sporting arenas, including the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), home of cricket and Australian Rules football, as well as Rod Laver Arena, which hosts the Australian Open tennis tournament every January. Formula One lovers are also just a stone’s throw from the Albert Park circuit of the Australian Grand Prix.

Gastronomes will have access to an endless supply of some of Australia’s best restaurants – whether it be fine Italian cuisine at Tipo 00, modern Greek at The Press Club, culinary ingenuity at Heston Blumenthal’s Australian outpost Dinner By Heston, or cutting-edge creations at the highly lauded Attica, one of Australia’s top five restaurants.

And it’s not all just fine dining either – Melbourne has an array of famous foodie destinations, from the enticing aromas of Chinatown’s alleyways to the glisteningly fresh produce of the popular Queen Victoria Markets and the plethora of bakeries and eateries on St Kilda’s Acland Street.

This is backed by some of the best cultural offerings of any Australian city, with a myriad of cutting-edge performances, exhibitions, festivals and live shows regularly lighting up the Melbourne night (and day) time.

Live theatre and music lie just across the river at the aforementioned Crown Entertainment Complex, while quieter pursuits are available at the National Gallery of Victoria, or the Melbourne Arts Centre, both of which are about to undertake major expansion plans. On the other hand, nature lovers will be certain to make frequent use of the nearby Royal Botanical Gardens, Fitzroy Gardens or Carlton Gardens.

With such an array of lifestyle options to choose from, it’s no wonder that since 2011, Melbourne has experienced the highest average growth of any city in Australia. This unprecedented level of growth saw the southern capital top the 5-million-person mark for the first time in 2018.

As a result, the Victorian government has embarked on a range of major

infrastructure projects, including a nine-kilometre, twin-rail tunnel currently under construction through the centre of the CBD. The Metro Tunnel will deliver five new underground stations for the residents of Melbourne, increasing the CBD rail loop’s capacity by an additional 39,000 passengers during peak hour.

According to Ms Wu, this just proves Melbourne is the place to be.

“We’re confident in Melbourne’s future – and the continued popularity of the city with both new residents and international visitors proves this point.

“With an outstanding lifestyle, a great food culture, a thriving arts scene, and some of the biggest sporting events in Australia, Melbourne is quite rightly the envy of many cities around the world.

“All of this ensures that the future residents of Flinders Bank, as well as guests at the amazing St Regis Melbourne, will be experiencing Australian living at its best – right here on the banks of the mighty Yarra.”

A THAT Rocks Collaboration

Lalique has long collaborated with the world’s leading artists, architects and designers and the latest to add his name to the French house’s hall of fame is Arik Levy. The master glass maker and Art Deco founding father, René Lalique was a keen observer of the world, who found in nature a fertile source of inspiration. The master artist knew how to dissect and examine the natural world in all its aspects, forms and structures in order to capture the essence, the spark of life. Some 130 years later, Lalique Art collaborates with contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, Anisk Kapoor and Arik Levy. A multidisciplinary talent –sculptor, designer, photographer – and above all inquisitive to the core, Arik Levy does not copy nature, he brings it to life, just as René Lalique did before him. A convincing example of this is the imposing RockStone, which took root in the grounds of the 5 star Villa René Lalique in Alsace. The endless play of light upon the surface of this piece is ample evidence that Arik Levy’s sculpture does not merely reflect its surroundings. Two years after this encounter, Lalique’s RockStone 40 is emerging from its Alsace furnaces. A mineral apparition in Lalique crystal, coloured green, blue, amber or clear. These elements of nature are configured by Arik Levy to reveal the breath of infinity that objects can convey.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Arik Levy is a multitalented artist, whose many guises include sculptor, painter, photographer, designer and video maker. He claims “55 years of creative endeavour” - which is his age. Born in Israel, he established himself in Europe after a debut group exhibition in Tel Aviv in 1986. A self-taught artist, he completed his studies at the Art Centre Europe in Vevey (Switzerland), before moving to Paris where he set up his own art and design studio. Arik Levy, whose curiosity encompasses all worlds, made a name for himself amongst art lovers, but also in the world of design-creating furniture, interiors, jewellery, lamps and visual identities - and in the field of contemporary dance through his stage settings. His work has been exhibited in museums around the world - for example, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and MoMA in New York - but also installed on a permanent basis in public spaces. He is currently completing an assignment for the Hermitage Modern Contemporary Museum in Moscow, a monumental piece due to be installed in the forecourt of the future museum in late 2019.

INTERVIEW WITH ARIK LEVY

“RockStone” is one of the most celebrated images in your repertoire. What made you want to reinterpret it in Lalique crystal? RockStone 40 is inspired by manmade nature and my interpretation of the spatial dimension and the phenomenon of reflection, themes I have been exploring for a very long time. These pieces have been shown in numerous exhibitions, from Taipei to Saint-Paul-de-Vence, and also installed on a permanent basis in public spaces. The idea of collaborating with Lalique was conceived after I was commissioned to create a sculpture in mirrorpolished stainless steel for the garden of Villa René Lalique in Alsace. Lalique and I are kindred spirits: our work is bent on preserving as much of the sheer force of nature as possible.

You had already experimented with crystal in collaborations with other leading manufacturers: what new

experiences did you have in your encounter with Lalique?

I am perhaps the sole artist to have worked with all the great crystalmakers. I have no problem with that because, for me, there are no boundaries between our various arts. It was a great opportunity to be able to rework the crystal, to see it metamorphose and to help perpetuate this magnificent tradition. The collaboration with Lalique has been a story of shared passion and expertise. I prefer to work with people who take up challenges and follow them through to their conclusion, just as I do. A collaboration is above all an adventure on a personal level.

What specific areas of expertise have you encountered at Lalique?

My most treasured moment in the cold-glass workshops was observing the cutting process. I was fascinated by the skills that Lalique’s Meilleurs Ouvriers de France (Best Craftsmen in France) displayed in creating the repolished satin finish. Their mastery is simply astounding.

What particular characteristic does crystal lend to your work?

It is a magical material. If you look from one facet to another, the prismatic diffraction and depth of field set the light moving and evolving. Manufacturing crystal is a long, drawn-out process. Week after week, I felt the mounting excitement, it was a tremendous experience. The result is a piece profoundly mineral in nature, in which the viewer perceives, through reflections, an emotional depth that is not ordinarily visible. Light sculpts a new landscape.

In recent years, we have seen you making a successful transition from design to art. Where do you place yourself as a creative artist?

I have a maxim that sums me up pretty well: “Creativity is an uncontrolled muscle.” I started with painting, exhibited photos all over the world, created sculpture, made films and worked as a designerstage sets for contemporary dance are a particular passion of mine. My engagement with all artistic domains is so rewarding.

AT THE FACTORY

The Lalique glassworks, in the heart of the Vosges in Alsace, is perpetuating traditional craft skills that go back generations. For a number of years, these techniques have been adapted to serve projects with contemporary artists, architects and designers.

First, a steel mould was developed, meticulously replicating the artist’s design. The crystal was then hotpressed in the mould with multiple facets, created from the imprint of the original model. A big challenge for the Lalique artisans was to complete a piece that eventually weighed in at 15 kg, which involved scooping 35 kg of molten crystal from the pot furnaces. This material has a silky texture like honey and needs delicate handling. Lalique’s six-strong team of craftsmen, armed with solid expertise, preformed the crystal in gobs, before pouring it into the mould. Crystal needs time. After cooling, the piece undergoes a process of annealing that takes at least a hundred hours. This avoids inducing stresses within the crystal. RockStone 40 is finally ready to be released from its steel sheath. To achieve the shape conceived by Arik Levy nothing was left to chance: the initial phase of crafting in the coldend workshops involved machining each facet to smooth out any unevenness due to excessive thickness or casting burrs. Crafting Lalique style called for a final touch from the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France. Each piece was worked entirely by hand using a range of techniques, including sand-blasting. RockStone 40 requires the deftest of touches because all the facets have to be satinated in a highly organized way to remain true to the artist’s intention.

A TOTEMIC SCULPTURE

Arik Levy’s work with Lalique has brought out his penchant for form and material. The artist has reinterpreted his celebrated “Rocks”, a series of monumental totems widely exhibited in museums and installed in public spaces, bringing him worldwide fame. Enhanced by the reflections in Lalique crystal, this mineral form, 40 centimetres in height, reveals multiple facets, ridges and intertwined lines, sometimes repeated, sometimes transformed. RockStone 40 is futuristic in form and at the same time primitive as well as traditional. It was conceived by Arik Levy as a “journey to the centre of the earth”. These sculptures in pure crystal come in four colours found in nature: amber, blue, green and clear. Each colour version is produced in a limited edition of eight.

UNIQUE | 113

FIRE: ROCKSTONE 40, AMBER

The artist chose this warm colour, which crackles and irresistibly summons up the memory of fire. By association with these sensations, amber is redolent of survival, of the fireplaces that allowed men and women to warm and protect themselves, to eat and evolve over countless centuries. This exceptional colour nuance is particularly difficult to come by: amber is the product of a complex alchemy involving different components.

SAP: ROCKSTONE

40, GREEN

Nature shines through this colouring. Arik Levy refers us to the rising sap of plants and the roots that bind and connect us. Highly sensitive to temperature, the green colouring was conceived and worked by Lalique’s craftsmen with fine attention to detail to achieve the softest possible shade.

LIGHT: ROCKSTONE 40, CLEAR

On the surface of RockStone 40 the light has a shifting quality. Always changing, never the same: clear crystal is a singular colour that clouds our perception. When the reflections prompt us to change our view and see things differently, it is as though the air and its oxygen, normally so insubstantial, have become materialized.

WATER: ROCKSTONE 40, BLUE

This prime element is the source of all life: without water nothing is possible … no more than without oxygen. This colour is also evocative of the azure, the sky, the horizon. To reproduce the delicate clarity imagined by Arik Levy, the Lalique artisans used a carefully blended combination of iron oxide and copper.

A Notable Interest in Wine

With the Liv-Ex 100 industry benchmark index delivering 8% compound annual growth over the past 15 years, is it time to take stock of your cellar…?

Savvy buyers have long bought more wine than they intend to drink, with a view to funding their fine wine drinking by selling cases surplus to requirements. For some there’s no such thing as spare wine, but with investment in wine making headlines, as well as profits in recent years, it’s certainly wise to consider wine as a viable alternative asset.

Like any commodity, when demand is high and availability finite, prices rise. The 1990s saw global interest in fine wine investment increase dramatically, as traditional markets in Europe and the US were joined by the extraordinary buying power of the Far East. Fine wine is now a truly global market with a demonstrable history of performance, showing resilience from wider financial market disruption and strong performance compared to more traditional investments.

The Liv-Ex 100 industry benchmark index has delivered 8% compound annual growth over the past 15 years. This compares favourably to 3% for UK equities (FTSE 100 Index) or 5% for US equities (S&P 500 Index). For many it's far more useful than gold, and easier to enjoy than art. Interest in wine is growing at all levels.

The much sought-after region of Bordeaux continues to make up the foundation of the market, with the visibility, transparency and liquidity that other regions perhaps do not have. Though a noticeable and continuing trend has been the widening of the market beyond its traditional core. A recent report from Liv-Ex.com showed that throughout 2018, Bordeaux made up 58.2% of the market which was a new low. This was followed by Burgundy at 14.5%, Champagne increasing its share to third with 8.6%, displacing Italy into fourth place with an 8.1% share. The market has continued to broaden with more wines than ever being actively traded on the secondary market, along with the total value of the wine market increasing substantially.

As more and more wines are collected and traded, the market continues to change and evolve. With prices moving upwards, the scope of interest widens, meaning New World regions such as the USA and Australia enter the fold of investment grade wines. A balanced portfolio should take these changes into account, and as with any investment, you should only invest what you can afford to lose.

If the world of fine wine investment sounds interesting to you, there are some useful points to bear in mind before you begin…

Wine in an unregulated market.

Many unscrupulous merchants/wine investment houses will have few qualms about selling the wrong wines or the right wines at the wrong prices for investment. Only buy from established merchants and ensure you get the expertise needed. Knowing which vintages to look at in any given region is certainly one of the key ways of not only maximising one’s return, but also of ensuring the wines can last the term you intend to invest for.

Fine wine enjoys a favourable demand and supply dynamic over time.

Fine wine matures once bottled, improving with age which increases the demand. A limited amount of each wine is produced every year and as bottles are consumed the supply of the wine becomes smaller. Moreover, demand and interest in fine wine is growing around the world and supply of the top wines cannot be increased. The increase in demand and decrease in supply over time naturally places an upward pressure on fine wine prices. It is though an investment market like any other, so be aware that prices can go down as well as up.

Fine wine is often best bought at its opening price when first released by the chateau. This is referred to as ‘en-primeur’ where one can purchase the latest vintage while it is still in barrel, with a view to securing wines that may not be available at later dates, before the wines begin trading on the secondary market once they’ve become physically available. Of course, there are plenty of opportunities to add wine with age that will hit that peak sooner.

The global secondary market for some fine wine is more established than for others.

The top wines of Bordeaux account for just over half of wines traded on the secondary market, followed by Burgundy, Champagne and Italy. Whilst other parts of the world make great wines, the global secondary market has more limited demand for these, so sticking to the best from these regions is the safest strategy.

There is no set amount to begin an investment. While one could add an ‘investment grade’ case of wine for £500, the returns need to be worthwhile in offsetting storage charges, and it’s often better to invest in a diversified portfolio of wines to manage risk. Therefore, starting with a meaningful amount allows a better variety of options when selecting wines for your portfolio.

Financial maturity of a fine wine will be linked to its drinking maturity.

With many of the best wines only beginning to come in to their drinking window at 10 years of age and with a lifespan of 20 years plus, your investment should be viewed as a medium to long-term one. Experience suggests that a minimum 5-year and ideally 10-year term is a good benchmark. This allows the wines in a collection to mature and potentially reach their drinking maturity, which is often closely linked to the consumption of a wine, therefore it’s rarity, and value, on the market.

Fine wine will only retain its value if it is kept in optimum conditions. They should be kept in a temperature-controlled environment and movement should be kept to a minimum. This allows the wine to mature whilst minimising the risks of any faults developing.

Investing with a reputable and experienced merchant, should be the number one consideration for all potential collectors. Not all wines and vintages are suitable or priced appropriately for investment, and it is possible for potential investors to put funds into the wrong wines. Berry Bros. & Rudd is Britain's oldest wine and spirit merchant, having traded from the same shop for over 300 years, since 1698. Today the company also has offices in Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, a Wine School and an exclusive fine wine and dining venue in London's St James's. They also hold two Royal Warrants for H.M. The Queen and H.R.H. The Prince of Wales.

Investing in fine wine is relatively straight forward. A merchant, such as Berry Bros. & Rudd, will be able to supply you with cases of investment grade wine to purchase, ensure their provenance and have them professionally stored. These wines should be purchased ‘in-bond’ (i.e. pre-import tax) to avoid paying excise duty and VAT on the wine, which cannot be reclaimed. You will then be able to broker your wine for sale should you wish to realise any investment gains, or alternatively arrange delivery should you wish to drink the wine.

Access to the most in demand wines is vital for investing effectively, though with supply so limited this can be difficult to achieve. Through its long-standing relationships with the producers of the world’s most coveted wines, Berry Bros. & Rudd has unparalleled access to the most sought-after wines. Traditionally considered leaders in the Bordeaux market, they have expanded their expertise into other sought-after wine regions, with dedicated buyers and Masters of Wine sourcing allocations from Burgundy, Italy, Spain, the Rhône Valley and New World countries including Australia and North America.

Storing wine in optimal conditions and guaranteeing provenance is essential for a fine wine to retain its value. With this in mind, Berry Bros. & Rudd offer you access to the finest bonded wine storage in the UK. Their state-of-the-art, secure, bonded warehouses are strictly controlled environments: temperatures are regulated to within half a degree, and movement of stock is kept to a minimum. Before entering the warehouses, bottles and their original packaging are assessed, checked and gently acclimatised to guarantee the perfect condition of every bottle. For added peace of mind, all wines are insured at replacement value and are covered by a quality guarantee.

Being able to sell wines that have appreciated in value to realise any gains is a crucial element to investing. You may also want to sell wines you no longer wish to hold in your cellar, or indeed buy additional rarely available wines. All of this is possible with ‘Berrys’ Broking Exchange’ (‘BBX’), the world’s first online wine brokering service. On BBX you will be able to easily list and sell wines from your collection, on one of the world’s most extensive wine trading platforms. The service also provides real time valuations as well as the opportunity to purchase wines from one of the most exclusive and extensive marketplaces. With access to over 30,000 potential buyers and over 20,000 wines available, many of the wines offered for sale on BBX are quite simply not available anywhere else in the world.

Berry Bros. & Rudd also include the services and experience of a dedicated Account Manager, who will be on hand to offer advice and assistance on purchases, sales and drinking windows. You can decide to assign them as much or as little responsibility over your cellar as you wish, and they will be available to meet with you regularly to discuss your goals, talk through your options, and continually help you to plan and build your cellar. As Berry Bros. & Rudd charge no management fees, all funds invested go directly into purchasing your wines and you then simply pay for the storage and insurance of your wines stored in their bonded warehouses.

Berry Bros & Rudd also have a strict policy on wine investments, which is as follows: They can offer solid advice on current valuations of wines or vintages, since their opinion can be backed by concrete evidence of recent transactions of these wines, providing a definitive point of reference. They offer their opinion, based purely on their extensive experience and on demonstrable market history, on whether a wine will appreciate over time, stressing that many factors can influence the price in that time, for good or bad. Berry Bros. & Rudd do not give financial advice or advice on investments and they do not offer any guarantees on a wine’s monetary appreciation potential. For customers seeking advice on these two issues they recommend you contact an IFA (Independent Financial Advisor). Berry Bros. & Rudd strongly encourage a medium to long term view with eight to 10 or more years as a minimum.

Despite over 300 years of history behind them, members of the Berry and Rudd families continue to own and manage this family-run merchant. The wealth of experience and knowledge they have in wine puts them in a prime position to be able to help customers plan and build their cellars for the future.

BRIGHT FUTURES

With world-class education, a stable economy, fresh air and friendly locals, the Australian lifestyle is undoubtedly a desirable one, and an excellent choice to invest in both international study and in real estate.

As a lifestyle destination and a safe haven for their wealth, more and more parents are sending their offspring Down Under to gain the best possible education at top-ranking schools and universities, where many continue as residents and apply their family grown success to the local economy.

Add to this that Melbourne has won consistent accolades as one of the most livable cities in the world and that Australia provides a safe and comfortable living environment for international students, it’s no wonder offshore investors are turning to specialist local groups who can help them apply their offshore real estate development flare to the local market in a big way. Something Sinclair Brook Group knows a thing or two about.

As a leading privately owned property group, Sinclair Brook Group has its finger on the pulse of a constantly evolving

industry, with Australia remaining at the upper end of developed economies for projected growth due to population growth and linkages to Asia according to Deloitte (2018).

Diverse in its operations, from project origination and development management to project management and capital solutions, and with additional diversity through sectors, the group is like no other.

The dedicated team at Sinclair Brook comprises expert development managers and project managers whose passion for driving projects of any scale runs through their veins.

“As a development manager we play the role of ‘conductor’ to all aspects of the project and project team. We are the ‘glue’ that helps bring everyone together,” says Matt Burns, director of Sinclair Brook Group. “Our clients are a

range of local and offshore land owners, developers and investors, including high-net-worth individuals, as well as private and public companies.”

With a national reach of over $7 billion of developments, Sinclair Brook has an impressive portfolio. The team have their fingers in a range of hot property pies, including big city skyscrapers and worldclass hotels.

One residential development that’s currently in the pipeline is Australia 108, set to provide the tallest residence in the southern hemisphere with a stunning golden Starburst that will protrude from the tower on levels 70-71 over the adjacent streets. It has been no easy feat to incorporate this striking feature into the design, but reputable construction company, Multiplex, is managing this complexity by building in multiple portions and prefabricating the Starburst offsite, which will be lifted 210 metres into the air.

146 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 147

Balancing the commercial and aspirational design aspects of each development is something Sinclair Brook Group is known for. Working with a number of leading construction, design and architecture firms, Sinclair Brook Group has a firm hold of the steering wheel to ensure a project’s commercial outcomes are bankable, whilst being true to the client’s - often bold – design vision.

“Aspirational design is important on any project as we are designing buildings of the future,” says Burns, “but ultimately, we want to take a project through to successful completion, so commercial viability ends up being the key driver at the end of the day.”

Given Australia is experiencing a booming era of tourism (who doesn’t yearn to visit some of the most exotic locations in the world? Think crystal clear beaches and divine culinary experiences), the advent of luxury hotels runs parallel to economic growth.

In a first for Australia, Melbourne’s Flinders Bank will become home to a St. Regis Hotel, part of the world-class luxury hotel brand St. Regis Hotels & Resorts. In addition to providing development management services, Sinclair Brook worked closely with the developer, Century Group Aus, in the operator procurement and negotiation for the 168-room luxury hotel.

The $800 million mixed-use development will also include residential apartments and a significant retail precinct, with luxury rooms offering sweeping views of the Yarra River or Melbourne’s soaring skyline.

Mixed-use developments incorporating ultra-modern living and convenience in trendy metropolitan areas has revolutionised the way we are living today. With a huge demand for residing in close proximity to retail precincts, public transport, the best restaurants and cafes, and all without losing sight of nature.

With that in mind, Sinclair Brook is involved in one of the most innovative and attractive apartment

buildings in Melbourne, which meets all of these demands and more.

Located on the fringe of the CBD, Melbourne Square is a high-rise residential tower with the first multilevel full-line supermarket in Victoria and world-class amenities including a divine 48-metre swimming pool and open parkland.

Not limited to high-rise residential and hotel buildings, Sinclair Brook seeks a diverse range of opportunities, including Queenscliff Harbour – one of its earliest and most impressive works. In conjunction with Queenscliff Harbour Pty Ltd, Sinclair Brook redeveloped Queenscliff Harbour, one of Victoria’s most pristine boating locations.

The harbour now comprises marine baths, dry storage facilities, travel lift, serviced boatyard, retail, restaurants and a 42-metre observation tower offering panoramic views across Port Phillip bay, the Bellarine and Mornington Peninsula.

The future also looks exceedingly bright, as Sinclair Brook Group continues to reinvent itself, diversifying its business operations and seeking to embark on more new and exciting mixed-use projects.

THE MAKERS OF BAKERS:

HOW A NOT-FOR-PROFIT IS GIVING NEW LIFE TO REFUGEES IN AUSTRALIA

The Bread & Butter Project, Australia’s first social enterprise bakery, is transforming the experience of asylum seekers landing on antipodean shores

Golden afternoons playing on the streets of Aleppo with his three brothers.

Busy weekends in his father’s clothing store.

Aroma-filled evenings around the family dinner table eating and chatting.

Family experiences frame the recollections Mohammad Darwish has of his childhood growing up in Syria.

But sadly, that life was irrevocably altered by the onset of the Syrian Civil War in 2011. What had started as a peaceful uprising against the president of Syria quickly escalated into a full-scale conflict which over the last eight years has resulted in more than 360,000 fatalities, devastating Syria’s cities and their residents.

For Mohammad, who had followed in his father’s footsteps and opened his own retail clothing business after finishing school, living in a war zone posed an ever-present danger for his family – including wife Manal and children Tala and Abdul.

Ultimately, a series of aerial bombings destroyed Mohammad’s store and his car, taking away his family’s primary means of income. Looking back, Mohammad describes life’s vulnerability at that time with clenched fists.

“Everything was a problem, my car, my shop – everything [was gone], because of the bombs. It was very dangerous,” he says. “We knew we had to leave – it was no longer safe for the family.”

In search of stability and security, Mohammad fled Syria with his family and his brother – thanks to a friend who helped them cross the border into Turkey. Fourteen long hours later, they arrived in Istanbul, where Mohammad’s parents were waiting to receive them.

Mohammad attempted to rebuild his life in Istanbul, even taking up a role with the same clothing brand he had worked for in Aleppo – but he was also presented with an entirely new set of challenges. Even though Mohammad spoke Turkish, a difference in accents made communication difficult, while the cost of living in Istanbul was high, meaning he struggled to provide for his family.

The family’s needs as displaced refugees were also unmet by the Turkish government – officials were preoccupied with accommodating the growing influx of Syrian refugees flooding into Istanbul.

Despite feeling much safer in Turkey, Mohammad was still mindful that he needed to do everything he could to provide a bright future for Manal, Tala and Abdul. He’d heard good things about Australia, and after doing plenty of research, in 2015 he made the difficult decision to uproot his family again – this time boarding a plane for Sydney.

Upon arrival, he immediately felt at ease, knowing that he had managed to move his family as far away from the conflict as possible. He was also struck by the incredible generosity of the Australian people.

“Everyone likes to help [each other] like a team...I’m very happy here,” he says.

At that time, Mohammad was able to speak Arabic, Turkish and French, but English was yet another hurdle he had to face. Thankfully it was an easier transition for Tala, 12, and Abdul, 15, who picked up English quickly at school. (These days, they even tell him how to pronounce certain words.)

But Mohammad was still confronted with the challenge of finding work –he applied for a variety of roles but found it challenging to complete job applications due to the language barrier. Feeling despondent, Mohammad was encouraged to attend a local presentation by The Bread & Butter Project.

Australia’s first social enterprise bakery, The Bread & Butter Project provides training and employment pathways for refugees and asylum seekers. In addition to delivering handmade, artisan bread all over Sydney, the company’s sole focus is to ensure ‘new Australians’ have the best chance of gaining sustainable employment, resulting in successful resettlement and a sense of belonging in their adopted country.

For Mohammad, it was the chance he’d been waiting for. He wasted no time in applying and was thrilled to receive acceptance into the program. The traineeship would give him the opportunity to develop a new skillset, obtain his baking certification and importantly, receive English tuition.

Tucked away in a semi-industrial part of inner-suburban Sydney, it’s easy to miss The Bread & Butter Project’s bakery headquarters. But it was in this friendly and welcoming space that Mohammad thrived, quickly learning the art of baking. The bakery’s learningfocussed environment – which offered practical, handson training – suited him perfectly, and after one week, Mohammad was well on his way to a new career.

At the bakery, Mohammad developed a specific interest in mixing, and after finishing the program, the team helped him secure a job at leading Australasian bread manufacturer Tip Top Bakeries, where he now works as a mixer. He highly values the qualifications gained as a result of The Bread & Butter Project’s trainee program.

“I have Certificate I, Certificate II...[these are] very important [things],” he says. “Also, not just a certificate –experiences, a job, English [skills] and friends,” he adds.

Indeed, Mohammad made lasting connections with his colleagues and fellow graduates at The Bread & Butter Project – essential friendships which have helped the transition into his new life.

Over the years, The Bread & Butter Project has helped nearly 30 refugees find their feet in Australia. And it’s this process of learning new skills in the company of fellow refugees that is a vital ingredient in helping the trainees adapt to their new country, says Philip Hoban, The Bread & Butter Project’s General Manager.

“Once our trainees join the Bread & Butter program, they quickly find their feet and form strong bonds with the other bakers – we believe this gives them a strong sense of identity and purpose in their adopted country,” says Philip.

“When they’re working in the bakery they also communicate in English, because this not only helps them learn their new language but ensures there is no social exclusion amongst trainees from different cultural backgrounds.

“This means the trainees become like a de facto family, and these connections tend to last long after they graduate from our program.”

Certainly, the concept of bonding with friends and family over food isn’t a new one – it’s something that was very familiar to Mohammad from his childhood – and it’s this fundamental part of the human experience that lies at the heart of The Bread & Butter Project story.

It was in 2011 that renowned baker Paul Allam – co-founder of Sydney institution Bourke Street Bakery, which has 11 stores across the harbour city and now a new venue in New York – was inspired to establish The Bread & Butter Project.

Travelling with his wife, Jessica Grynberg, the couple visited Mae Sot on the Thailand-Myanmar border. There, at the invitation of a local orphanage, Paul and Jessica taught a group of Karen refugee women how to bake bread – in the process helping to establish a social business that supports the women and the orphanage.

UNIQUE | 157

On returning home to Australia, Paul, along with his partner at Bourke Street Bakery, David McGuinness, decided to use Bourke Street Bakery’s expertise and community spirit to set up a social enterprise bakery that empowers the less privileged in the Australian community.

Their vision saw the Bourke Street Bakery team gift their time, baking and hospitality experience to establish a wholesale bakery where 100% of the profits were reinvested in training and employment opportunities for refugees and asylum seekers. The end result was The Bread & Butter Project.

Vitally, the program delivers on its promise, with The Bread & Butter Project’s graduates consistently finding gainful employment after their training is completed, says Philip.

“We’re very proud of the fact that recent independent research shows The Bread & Butter Project has had an immensely positive impact on the employment outcomes of our graduates.

“Since we launched in 2013, all of our graduates have achieved ongoing

employment, with none relying on the Australian Government’s NewStart allowance – proving that our program has profound and lasting outcomes.”

Someone who has experienced the positive family impact of The Bread & Butter Project is one of the company’s earliest trainees – Ma Du. In echoes of Paul and Jessica’s experiences in Mae Sot, Ma came to Australia after spending time in the Thai-Myanmar border refugee camp, Mae La.

Originally hailing from Naboo in southern Myanmar, Ma had made the heart-breaking decision to leave her home due to continued attacks from the Burmese military, who raided the village at night, using weapons to forcibly seize homes and take control of the food supply.

In 1996, while pregnant with her third child, Ma, her husband and their two daughters embarked on the arduous seven-day journey from Burma to Mae La in search of a better life. Traversing dangerous mountainous terrain and hiding in fields from the military, they finally arrived at Mae La camp – staying for ten years.

“We were so relieved to reach Mae La that it became our new home,” Ma explains. “We felt safer in the camp – it was the best place to raise our three daughters.”

Ma found work as a seamstress, but she also stayed in regular contact with a friend who had moved to Australia. After regularly hearing about her friend’s new life ‘down under’, Ma ultimately made the bold decision to move again. Despite never having travelled on a plane, in 2006 Ma and her family set off for Sydney – with Ma remaining in the brace position for the entire journey to combat her nerves.

When Ma landed in Australia, she could not speak, read or write English, but she took on the challenge of studying again – this time as a mature age student. For the next five years, she dedicated herself to studying her new language, with Ma and her husband shaping an intensive learning environment at home.

“We were only allowed to speak English in [the] home…if we spoke Burmese, we [had to] pay a fivedollar fine,” she explains.

158 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 159
160 | UNIQUE

However, Ma still struggled to secure full-time employment because of her linguistic difficulties. This changed when a friend recommended The Bread & Butter Project and Ma was successfully accepted into the program.

Her traineeship gave Ma a new focus – and a renewed energy towards her English tutoring. Within a short period of time, her abilities had drastically improved thanks to her new workplace’s ‘English-only’ rule – which provided further immersion in the language.

Ma learned the art of baking and the importance of teamwork through the program and speaks of the immense joy and pride she felt after producing her first loaf of bread, having never been exposed to baking before commencing the traineeship.

“I’m proud and grateful to be a graduate of The Bread & Butter Project,” she declares, placing her hand on her heart.

“Had it not been for The Bread & Butter Project, I would have struggled to find work in Australia. I would not have the confidence [that] I have now,” she says.

These days, Ma is a full-time employee in the bakery’s pastry department, making over 1,000 croissants a day alongside other members of the team. She also confesses to being a mother figure to new trainees, sharing her baking tips and tricks and helping them settle into their new working environment.

On the home front, The Bread & Butter Project’s influence has been felt as well. Ma’s eldest daughter has just finished a Business and Administration degree, while her middle daughter works in aged care and her youngest is soon to complete her media degree at the University of Technology Sydney.

These extended family education and employment outcomes are a familiar story with The Bread & Butter Project’s graduates, says Philip.

“Successful employment at The Bread & Butter Project has been shown to have strong intergenerational outcomes,” he confirms.

“In fact, all children of graduates

are currently undergoing education, further training or employment.”

There’s no doubt that The Bread & Butter Project makes a huge difference to many lives – and it requires the dedication and input of a committed team of individuals.

“As a social enterprise, the company operates as a commercial business, with bread and pastry sales funding about 90% of training and operational costs, and donations funding the remaining 10%,” adds Philip.

“In addition, volunteers and pro bono partners contribute their time to help the company achieve its goals.

“This is why The Bread & Butter Project is such a collaborative and inspirational enterprise – there are so many people from so many different walks of life who make it tick.”

THE LAST SUPERCAR?

As the performance car world moves towards electrification, downsizing and turbocharging, the supercar as we know is an endangered species. Thankfully Lamborghini has one final car that defies the trend and is as old school as you will find.

You’re looking at an endangered species; the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is the last proper supercar as we know it. While all its competitors have gone down the turbocharged and hybrid path, the Aventador remains true to the ethos of analogue supercars offering nothing more than brute force from a monstrously large, normally aspirated engine.

The 770hp, 6.5-litre, V12 in the SVJ is Lamborghini’s glorious defiance to political correctness before it too succumbs to electrification with its next generation. Lamborghini claims it will get you to 100kmh in 2.8 seconds, to 200kmh in 8.6 seconds and has a top speed of more than 350kmh.

To cement its place at the top of the pile, the SVJ recently set the fastest ever lap of the 20.6km Nordschleife circuit with a time of 6:44.97sec, two seconds clear of the previous benchmark set in a Porsche 911 GT2.

Now it was our turn and the green light at the end of pitlane at the Estoril track in southern Portugal was all the notice needed to get down to business.

TRACK TIME

Even the mildest jab of the throttle returned a neck-snapping thrust of acceleration that almost immediately had me jumping on the brakes for turn one.

Coupled with the scream of 12 cylinders and 48 valves doing their best to break free from an engine spinning at 8,500 revs per minute inches behind my head, the raw physical emotion from this car almost brought a tear to my eye before I’d reached the second corner.

In track-oriented Corsa mode, its pipes are straight through and would wake the devil on idle. Snick the paddleshift of the seven-speed, single-clutch box into first and it engages with a re-assuring thunk that would not be out of place in a LeMans racer and confirms the box’s beefed up claims.

New titanium valves and a modified intake offer a higher flow coefficient while a high-mounted exhaust saves weight not only because it’s made from lighter materials but it’s also shorter, so also louder, way louder.

RADICAL AERO TWEAKS

An improved ALA 2.0 active aero system which we first saw on the Huracan Performante introduces side winglets which cut turbulence while increasing downforce on the straight and through high-speed corners.

It varies aero load to achieve either high downforce or low drag depending on your needs as its electronicallyactuated motors open or close the flaps in the front splitter in less than 500 milliseconds

This reduces drag when you’re chasing maximum acceleration and top speed but increases downforce and traction on the inner wheel to counteract the load transfer during cornering.

Additionally, the rear wing’s inner air channel splits right and left, just like the original ALA system on the Huracan allowing aero vectoring for high speed corners.

The result from behind the wheel is that you need less steering angle to get the nose pointed towards the apex, almost feeling like a touch of lift-off oversteer as you tip it in.

JOTA HISTORY

Lamborghini reserves its SV name, meaning Super Veloce or Super Fast in English, for its performance versions but the J refers to a treasured model from the early 1970’s, the trackfocused Miura Jota. It was the fastest road car on the market so it’s only fitting that the Jota name returns for the most powerful V12 engine mounted to a production car today.

Carrying the weight of the Jota legacy, this SVJ has to deliver the bite to match its bark, so test driver Marco Mapelli shaved two seconds off the production car lap record around the 20.6km Nordschliefe circuit. It was previously set by a Porsche 911 GT2, until Mapelli clocked a seriously quick 6:44.97 seconds.

Compared to the Aventador SV, the SVJ has found an extra 40 per cent of downforce over both axles. A new front bumper with integrated side fins that feature a new intake gives the car added width.

A three-direction air outlet in the nose traffics air to reduce both drag and increase downforce, while the upper body tweaks also improve cooling and contribute 70 per cent to the total downforce. A wild-looking rear diffuser at the back completes the final 30 per cent which are aided by vortex generators channelling air under the car.

The massive rear diffuser is incorporated into the rear bumper while a new high-mounted carbon fibre wing tops the aggressive visual look from behind.

Its rear engine bonnet has been redesigned to not only block your entire view out the back, but with the gas strut hinges removed to save weight, means that the hood is detached racecar-style with four quick release clips.

FROM THE COCKPIT

The SVJ carries Lamborghini’s rear-wheel steering which works beautifully in conjunction with the aero tricks to make it steer like a much smaller mid-engined car with a delicate, fingertiplight feel through the wheel.

That’s something I never would have written about earlier V12 Lamborghinis but it lets you dance the car under brakes, allowing you to pick when and how you want to turn the car in and precisely when to nail that apex.

The cockpit is familiar to anyone who’s experienced a modern Lamborghini including the Urus as a further option has been added to the Strada, Sport and Corsa modes with the addition of the EGO function that debuted on the big SUV.

Whereas EGO on Urus let you set it up for differing off-road conditions, on the Aventador SVJ it’s there to allow the driver to fine tune specific preferences for the track.

The TFT digital dash remains unchanged, though it now shows a live status of the aero functions and when it comes to ticking the options boxes, the nav and infotainment systems including Apple CarPlay can be deleted at no cost. You can however, add Telemetry Systems which lets you record lap times, monitor track performance and trip data.

I’ve rarely had so much fun, nor felt so in control of such a wild beast on track. McLaren and Ferrari have been put on notice to lift their collective track-car game if they want to match the feeling you get driving the Aventador SVJ close to its limits.

With a showroom sticker price of $517,770, just a handful of people will get to call an SVJ their own as production is limited to 900 units globally and after that, we can say arrivaderci to a magnificent era of old school excess.

DESIGN

1. INSPIRATIONAL DESIGN

Some of the world’s best penthouse designs have been inspired by nature and the elements. Water and waves are a recurring theme in OASIS Residences, with the development featuring undulating curves and waves both inside and out. There is also a focus on natural textures, with the five-storey lobby including natural stone, foliage, a water feature and warm timbers. The curved design and the use of indoor plants reflects the influence of nature and water.

2. PERSONALISED APARTMENTS

The beauty of OASIS Residences is the ability to customise each residence in your own way of luxury living. Perhaps you’d like an expansive walk-in closet to store your handbag and shoe collection, or an extensive study area for books, figures or tech gadgets, OASIS Residences can deliver.

A home reflects its owner’s unique lifestyle. With customisation, the design process of each residence is unique, from floor plan sketching to furniture styling, from scratch to masterpiece — this is what makes your home special to you.

INTERIOR

3. SOPHISTICATED INTERIOR

The single loft apartment at OASIS has an internal staircase winding its way upwards from the living area. Floor-to-ceiling windows and a private walk-in wine cellar also feature in the double-storey loft.

Long island benches in expansive kitchens and large bathrooms with generously proportioned fittings add to the luxurious ambience. Bathrooms have been fitted with premium taps exclusively designed, engineered and crafted in Australia. The large bathrooms make the most of the incredible views from the top of the building.

4. PENTHOUSE TOUCHES

Luxe living should always come with a modern kitchen featuring quality finishes and extra touches. OASIS penthouses boast appliances by Gaggenau – the German manufacturer that has been recognised for its innovative but functional design and technology. Besides conventional kitchen appliances, OASIS added extras appliances, such as warming drawer, wine fridge, self-cleaning steam ovens, etc to complete residence’s kitchen masterpiece.

A luxury fireplace, personal wine cellar, panoramic windows and bathrooms with sky views are also typical penthouse elements. Thoughtful touches and designer appliances ensure every need is met.

EXTRA TOUCHES & VIEWS

5. PANORAMIC VIEWS OF MELBOURNE

Port Phillip Bay, Albert Park Lake, Royal Botanic Gardens, the Shrine of Remembrance, the city…views that showcase the best of Melbourne. Whether to enjoy those views from a private, spacious winter garden, or from the floor-to-ceiling windows while taking a relaxing hot bath, OASIS penthouse living brings views that you will never tire of.

The real jewel in the crown is that this development is an oasis in the sense it inhabits an island site. With no neighbouring buildings on the side or rear boundaries, residents – particularly those living on the upper levels – are spoilt with panoramic views, not to mention an abundance of natural light.

6. ALL THE ADDED EXTRAS

The rooftop garden with comfortable seating and a heated infinity pool ensures a 360-degree undisrupted panoramic view that provide a space to soak it all in with your family and friends in style. From a library with double-storey floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a cosy fireplace, to an elegant private dining room and lounge, the best apartments come with access to a raft of amenities.

Often it’s the extra touches that make a great residential development even better. OASIS includes a yoga studio, a gym, sauna and a dedicated kids’ playroom with an adjoining piano room.

For active folk who love to get their pedal on, there’s bike storage onsite, and there are charging bays for electric cars.

Design excellence, attention to detail and the finest quality products are what bring a luxury penthouse to life.
