Make it Nelson | Hands-On Workshops Programme June 2026

Page 1

haerE mai! welcome!

Make It Nelson is your chance to step out of the everyday and into making. Learn a new skill, create something truly one-of-a-kind, and connect with others.

This June, Whakatu - ’s finest makers, artists and creators are leading a diverse programme of hands-on, boutique workshops designed for beginners and seasoned craft-lovers alike.

Pick one workshop, stack a few across a weekend, or keep the creativity rolling all month long. Make It Nelson is your moment to learn, make, and find your creative flow.

How to use this programme

What’s it all about?

Make It Nelson is a new initiative from Arts Council Nelson, long-time champions of artists and innovators across Te Tauihu Top of the South. The event is proudly supported by Nelson City Council.

For both locals and out-of-towners

Make It Nelson is a new way to experience Whakatu - as a winter weekend escape with creativity at the heart of the journey. Spend the morning in a workshop, enjoy lunch at a local café, then explore the city’s galleries, shops and waterfront. Make It Nelson is the perfect opportunity to create, explore and recharge.

With 53 separate workshops, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by choice! So we really recommend that you use the schedule (pages 4-7) as a way to delve into the programme – this is the best way to see the half-day and full-day workshops at a glance, and start planning your weekend.

All the workshops follow the same schedule, so you can book two halfday workshops with a long lunch break in between. This means that if you’re feeling ambitious, it’s possible to do four workshops across one weekend (yeah you can!).

Whether attending alone or with friends, everyone can expect a welcoming space to learn, experiment and create alongside others. Best of all, everyone takes home something truly unique.

All the workshops are suitable for beginners – no experience necessary.

Most venues are walkable within the city centre. Check the map at the back of this brochure.

The workshops provide all the materials you’ll need for each session. Most workshops involve creating something you can take with you.

Check the website for more information, including age restrictions, value of materials and anything extra you need to know.

A message from our Mayor

Welcome to the inaugural Make It Nelson event, featuring 83 workshops over four weekends in June. Nelson City Council is proud to support this event, which is consistent with our aspiration for Nelson to be recognised as a UNESCO Creative City of Craft.

This initiative from Arts Council Nelson brings together our city’s finest artists and creators to present a rich programme of workshops. Most are standalone, meaning participants can head home with their treasures completed. From crafting a coffee mug to creating a lantern, Make It Nelson can help ignite your creative spark.

For Nelsonians, Make It Nelson also gives you the chance to encourage your out-of-town friends to join you.

Hon Dr Nick Smith Mayor of Nelson
