Saturday, Nov. 20, marked the 15th annual Will Robinson Memorial Run to honor a fallen hero, Deputy Will Robinson, a 1987 graduate of GMC High School, who was killed in the line of duty, Dec. 17, 1995. GMC Running and Cross Country Coach Stacie Goggans said, ‘The race has become a tradition for GMC and this year; 180 GMC prep students participated.’ The race has been held since 1996 to support several local charities, and the funds raised this year will benefit the Baldwin County CHAMPS Program, the GMC Will Robinson Scholarship Fund and the GMC Alumni Association Circle of Friends Scholarship Fund.

Left: Students in the Creekside OE program recently participated in a creativity workshop. Students were able to paint a porcelain tile with their own creative design. They all enjoyed expressing themselves using their creative imagination. Right: Third grade students in Mrs. Perdue’s class at Creekside have been learning about the geography of the United States. Students have participated in many fun map activities to help them memorize the location of each of the 50 states.

GMC students celebrate ‘National Chemistry Week’ Recently, GMC Prep School celebrated “National Chemistry Week.”

Chemistry students from Georgia College State University came to the school to share interesting hands-on activities with MAJ Clay McElheny’s chemistry classes.

The theme of the week was “Behind the

Scenes with Chemistry” which explored the chemistry behind some of the special effects that are seen in movies and explored common chemical concepts of everyday life. All the students enjoyed the activities and appreciated GCSU’s chemistry club taking time to visit the classroom.

Thanks to the John Milledge Academy family who showed up to support the recent JMA Beta Night at Chick-fil-A. The Beta Club, with the communities help, raised $450 to put towards school improvements. JMA: Masters of grammar Oak Hill studies artifacts

Students in Mrs. Linda White’s eighth grade Georgia History classes are studying Early Native American cultures in Georgia. For this performance task, the students are Woodland Indians decorating their food vessels (pottery). When the students finish they will become archaeologists and break the pots, bury them and dig them up as artifacts.

JMA 11th graders worked to master elements of grammar by creating a children’s book that focused on one part of speech. After presenting the books to the third grade, students donated their work to Mrs. Stefano and Mrs. Deariso to use as resources throughout the year.

Native Americans eat Thanksgiving at Eagle Ridge

Mrs. Spivey and Mrs. Tweedy’s kindergarten class at Eagle Ridge Elementary dressed up as Native Americans to eat Thanksgiving dinner with family at school. Afterward they returned to thank the lunchroom workers for the wonderful feast by gifting them with necklaces and small bags of candy.

The students have learned about the Pilgrims, Native Americans and the first Thanksgiving feast.

Science is sweet! My Teacher is Tops

Dr. Drummond’s fifth grade science classes at Creekside Elementary are learning that some objects are too small to be seen without magnification. In the experiment pictured, Kaleb Brown and Amiya Castillo compared and contrasted the physical properties of powdered sugar, granulated sugar and sugar cubes. They discovered the magnifying glasses allowed them to see some very interesting things that they could not see with just their eyes!

GMC takes Civil War trip Anna Dunn was honored with a visit from 13 WMAZ after she was selected as My Teacher is Tops. A student, Allen Edwards, in her class wrote a letter to the news station telling why his third grade teacher deserved to win My Teacher is Tops. Allen said that Mrs. Dunn’s teaching brings all the students together. Mrs. Dunn was very surprised and honored with 13 WMAZ reporters showed up to present her with the award.

She stated in the interview: ‘It’s wonderful when they learn, especially when it’s something I’ve taught them and they come back and they can tell me everything that I’ve taught them and we do that those that know everything that I say and everything that I’ve taught them and that’s a wonderful feeling.’ Mrs. Dunn is a third grade teacher at Blandy Hills Elementary School in Baldwin County. Many of her students said that she makes learning fun with songs and games. Congratulations to a wonderful teacher in Baldwin County. It is great to know that a student took the time to write a letter to recognize what a great job his teacher is doing to educate him and all her other students.

The GMC Prep School eighth grade class recently took a field trip to the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History. Highlights of the trip were watching a film on the “Great Locomotive Chase” that occurred during Civil War, seeing “The General” which is the actual locomotive from the chase housed in the museum, and simulating the loading and firing of Civil War muskets. The 8th graders have just completed a unit on the Civil War and enjoyed seeing history come alive!

Oak Hill students Class socks it to drugs dig for pottery

Mrs. Melder’s fifth grade class participated in Red Ribbon Week in October by ‘Socking It To Drugs’ and wearing Wacky Socks.

ERE class has money mania Oak Hill Middle School eight grade students in Mrs. Linda White’s Georgia history class became archeologists and began digging for artifacts that they buried after decorating pottery as Woodland Indians.

JMA students help promote Breast Cancer Awareness

The JMA Senior Beta club promoted Breast Cancer Awareness Month by challenging students to wear pink ribbons all month. These ribbons show our support to our survivors: Mrs. Terri Youngblood and Mrs. Laurie Harpe. Thanks for all the Beta Sophomores who worked to make this a success!

EcoClub is caretaker of Greenway

Members of the Oak Hill EcoClub met at the Oconee River Greenway recently to assist in the Georgia Power Rivers Alive Cleanup. The OHMS EcoClub are the official ‘caretakers’ of our community’s beautiful river walk and meet there regularly to maintain its cleanliness and natural beauty.

Give us some background on your teaching career.

I am from Hyderabad, the capital of A.P. in the south of India.

I received my bachelor’s in math, physics and chemistry in education and master’s degree in mathematics from Loyola College. I have been teaching for 16 years, between India and the United States. In India, the 11th and 12th grades are considered Intermediate College. I gave up a lot of time in India working with tutorial programs and helping market academics.

Before Milledgeville, I was in Bluffton, SC for three years.

What three words do you think students use to describe you?

Makes Math Fun. What interests do you have outside of school?

I play music, like the flute, guitar and the keyboard. I like Indian music, but slowly I am getting into American music

and classical music. I was a soccer captain for the university, so I love to play. It is easy for me to get those students who like sports because I like all that too. It is easy for me to understand what they are going through, because I was a sportsman in school. Sometimes it is tough, but you can perform with both studies and sports. I have a wife and two kids: daughter, 11 and son, 4. My daughter loves to dance and is very excited about starting school at John Milledge. They have been in India for the last 15 months; I am so happy to give my full attention to their studies and talents now that they are in Milledgeville with me.

If you were a superhero, what would be your superpower?

I would want to predict the future, so I could control my present. Really, I would just want to help out as many people as possible.

GMC Prep students participate in SEC ceremony

For the sixth year in a row, GMC Prep School students were invited to participate in the pre-game ceremony and presentation of colors during the 10 Southeastern Conference Championship (SEC) Game on Dec. 4 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Maj. Tom Hall, USA (Ret.), GMC Officer in Charge, said, ‘Our cadets are the only high school students invited to participate in this event alongside more than 100 college students. As our cadets always do, they conducted themselves very well.’ Ms. Pam Antista, director of the pre-game ceremony, remarked, ‘I put the GMC cadets on cruise control. I know I won’t have to tell them what to do or how to act.’ GMC and the SEC look forward to continuing this tradition for years to come.

Don’t miss Black Excellence Program

The Oak Hill Middle School Black Excellence Program theme this year is ‘This is American History.’ This production is designed to educate, enlighten and entertain the community about the importance of Black History. It also keeps our youth abreast of the past, present and future. The program will highlight local and world known black leaders and musical icons from opera to the funk era that have paved the way for musical success for African-Americans. Also, the most demanded segments from previous years will be highlighted. We will honor our military soldiers with a special tribute as well perform African, hip-hop, inspirational and liturgical dances. This is a show you don’t want to miss! Show times are: Feb 25 at 6:30 p.m. and Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. in the Oak Hill Middle School Theatre.

Baldwin class earns ag grant The agriculture classes of Bradley K. Hall at Baldwin High School are benefitting from a grant received by the school.

The grant, from Briggs & Stratton, provides students with an engine of Briggs & Stratton’s choice, a 4-cycle Theory DVD, and a case of repair manuals for the donated engine.

The Briggs & Stratton Basic Training Starter Kit will allow students practice with practical disassembly and learning maintenance routines. This will provide them with experience diagnosing problems and learning repair techniques.

This kit is Briggs & Stratton’s traditional Engine Donation Program. Once every three years, a school may apply for and receive one of Briggs & Stratton’s engines at no charge.

Midway Christmas greetings

Midway's second grade students made Christmas cards for Green Acres Nursing Home residents as a service project for our community.
