SCA kicks off Upward basketball season

Sinclair Christian Academy and Upward kicked off the basketball season on Jan. 9 with great success! All teams started off the season showing they had learned both basketball skills on the court and the values that Upward represents. The John Milledge fourth grade and their teachers, Diane Deariso and Berta Hartzell, visited First United Methodist Church as part of their Christmas season festivities on Dec. 16. Mrs. Therry Deal led the students on their own personal ‘Walk Through Bethlehem’ tour. Senior pastor Mac Enfinger shared the history and meaning of the symbols represented on the church's Crismon tree as well as other aspects of advent used during the Christmas season.

Eagle Ridge Elementary is spilling over with Lexile Superheroes! These students worked hard to raise their Lexile reading level by 100 or more points. The K-fifth grade students at Eagle Ridge increased their Lexile levels by a total of 38,742 points. Way to go Lexile Heroes! Pictured are third, fourth and fifth grade students who increased their Lexile scores by 200 or more points.

SCA recognizes top fundraisers
The GMC Chick-fil-A Leadership Team and Maj. Scott Seagraves hosted a Christmas party for Mrs. Simons and Mrs. Johnson's classes from the Early Learning Center. The children enjoyed a lunch from Chick-fil-A, played some reindeer games, and then had a surprise visit from Santa Claus who had a gift for each child. Contributed photo

JMA students use science, history skills

On Monday, Dec. 14, the Georgia Military College Prep School Middle School wrestling team visited the Georgia War Veterans Home. They handed out candy canes and wished the veterans Merry Christmas. This year they partnered with Mrs. Karen Grimes’ art class, who made some great homemade Christmas cards, and they handed those out as well.
Mrs. McCalvin’ s fifth grade class at John Milledge Academy became FBI agents as they examined the evidence from the Boston Massacre. Based on the evidence provided, they had to write a summary of who killed who, what weapons were used, and what caused the fight. They then had to form their own opinion of if they thought the British soldier was guilty of killing Crispus Attucks without reasonable cause, or if the soldier was innocent in the murder because he was defending himself. Midway students prep for Reading Bowl
Makayla Bloodworth and De’avian Simpson, fifth grade students from Midway Elementary’s OE class, use Google Drive to share files they have created to prepare for the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl competition. Georgia Apply to College is part of the American Council on Education’s national initiative to increase the number of students accessing postsecondary education. Baldwin celebrated ‘Apply to College Week’ on Nov. 16-Nov. 20. Students were assisted by staff from Mercer Educational Opportunities program with help filling out college applications, completing essays, etc. Teachers were asked to wear ‘Ask Me About My College’ pins to spark discussion with students about their own college experiences. Staff also participated in college T-shirt day on Wednesday, Nov. 18. Counselors provided students with transcripts and test scores to assist with their college applications. As a result 60 seniors applied to 117 colleges.
