ntrepreneur. Social media star. DJ. Producer. These are all but a few of the many different ventures that this man has under his belt.

Gianluca Vacchi is a world renown personality; an individual known a lot for his social media presence.

Whether it is Instagram, Facebook or Tiktok, the man has racked up a combined total of 36 million followers on his platforms for his creative and comical short clips which showcase his dance moves, his humour, as well as an insight into his personal life. In an interview with the acclaimed internet sensation, we take a look at not only what people see on his social media accounts, but what makes him the person that he is from behind the scenes as he discusses the past, present and future of Gianluca Vacchi.

Gianluca recounts the origins of his entrepreneurial history that dates back to his grandparents ventures in the machinery packaging industry. “I come from a family of entrepreneurs that made their first fortune in between the Second World War.” This family of entrepreneurs grew their business when the Vacchi family decided to invest in the building construction sector in the 1980s, a sector that was on the decline. Up until this moment, a young Gianluca Vacchi was a professional skier, who transitioned his life into his family’s business and became an entrepreneur. The switch did not just happen overnight, he had stated how his dream was to become a businessman.

In his 20s, Gianluca along with his cousin, made a series of smart investments to gain ownership of their family business, which saw Gianluca transforming the company as head of investor relations and later strategic development. By the age of 29, he decided to take a step back from his active involvement in managing the company and relinquished his managing responsibilities to his cousin. From here Gianluca would spend the next twenty years in private equity where he would buy and sell companies for profit using the funds he had earned over the years.

Having reached his 40s, after heavily exhausting the entrepreneurial world, working tirelessly day by day, Gianluca Vacchi did not feel the same energy to manage his companies and felt that there was a need for a change in his life. “My life was not moving my curiosity anymore. I am not a money driven person, so I realised what I was doing was not something that made me excited.” Around the same time, Gianluca was introduced to the world of social media. For a person who had no idea what Instagram was when first told about it by a friend of his, he slowly realised that by incorporating elements of his personal life and life philosophy, and fusing that with the social media trends and interests, he could become an entertainer.

“I started to show the way I was living, but not the way I was living because of social media, but how I was living before social media in my life because I was always living like this.”

He would soon in a short period of time gain worldwide recognition, as he simply put it ‘living the philosophy of his life’. “My life was always driven by the idea that we do not have enough time to live a life that someone else wants us to live.” He commented on the fact that he did not want to be a traditional individual fitting into a preconceived norm, but wanted to rewrite the rules of life. “I began to show that in life you can show something serious by doing something silly.” His mix of trivial, mundane routines, coupled with a humoristic element, whether it was a dance or acting comical, allowed him to be an inspirational character to his younger audience who were tired of their day to day.

“You can mix serious stuff with silly stuff, doesn’t make you a stupid guy. It only means you have a sense of humour. It only means that you are not scared of what the others will judge about you.”

With fame, comes success; however, it also brings its fair share of criticism. Many people online have taken shots at the rising social media star, questioning his decision making and his overall persona that he embodies on the internet. Gianluca Vacchi does not let these comments faze him as he had stated that he does whatever makes him happy.

“People who don’t laugh are not serious people.”

He adds that he will never intentionally disrespect anyone, however, disregards those who complain about him only because it does not align with their idea of normality.

This newly found success opened the door for him to express his artistic nature, and pursue his desire to be a DJ. Vacchi and his family have been brought up in a musical lifestyle, all of whom play the piano, therefore music was always a part of his identity. He took it upon himself to express his talents with his fans and reach a new level in his life. “Popularity can give me a stage, but then I must deserve to stay on that musical stage.”

His various ventures paired with his personal life add up to his daily schedule and he continues to add more to it. Vacchi and his partner, Sharon Fonseca, have recently introduced a baby girl, Blu Jerusalema, into the family. Despite being a busy businessman, musician and father, he commented on how delegation of work is a key attribute to his success. Along with that, being able to dream big, to allow yourself to push forward and feel that you can achieve something bigger than what you already have is another of his key attributes. To put it in his own words: “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

Gianluca Vacchi is clearly a man that goes against all generic, societal norms when it comes to work ethic, entertainment and way of life; yet why should that matter when all that he does brings joy into his life and his millions of fans? His larger than life persona may give one an insight into his daily affairs and what you may assume it is like to be Gianluca Vacchi, but he does not forget his roots.

As part of his life philosophy, he believes that you must be responsible in your decisions as ultimately you will be alone to do them. Inscribed on his body are the words ‘The Hermit’ which pays homage to the countryside home he lived in by himself. It is what inspired the philosophy that he has outlined with regards to responsibility. He also pays tribute to his father who he believes is one of his biggest inspirations in his life. As a parent figure, he was very strict with Gianluca’s decisions until he was of a mature enough age to be responsible. Gianluca mentioned how his strictness helped him to be shaped into the man he is today. “He was a strong man, but everything I was doing, I was doing for him.” His respect for his father led him to even tattoo the final words of the final letter his father sent to him.

With his social media lifestyle being a mainstay in Gianluca’s life for the foreseeable future, the world of entrepreneurship has not fizzled out of his life entirely. Currently, he is working with a company called ‘Cashback’ that creates special agreements with a number of companies. Through these agreements it allows for a savings platform to send cash back to your account when you purchase from select retail stores that use this system. Through such a scheme, people can become members to gain more out of the system. Apart from his present projects, Gianluca himself states that he does not know what his future has in store for him, but he will do whatever he wants to as long as it “sparks his curiosity and interest.”

ENSURING NO ONE GETS LEFT BEHIND:

THE EU’S COHESION POLICY

O

ver the past months the dominant narrative concerning the European Union has been one of fragmentation. Two factors come to mind: the initial botched response to the coronavirus pandemic where Member States rushed to close off borders in panic in an uncoordinated approach, and the North-South, West-East squabbles on migration. Both clear signs of a community which is finding it harder to mobilise collective action, particularly as it finds opposition from strongmen, populist leaders across the continent. To top it all, one of its most challenging, but important members, the United Kingdom, has formally terminated its membership of the Union at the end of last year.

Yet, there is another story about what European integration is all about.

A story which brings together 27 Member States with different languages, traditions and cultures, a mere 70 years after fighting out against each other bloody wars for the best part of their existence. A cursory look at European history shows a continent that has lost too many lives because of conflict. Today, we take peace and stability as a basic tenet of our continent.

This unity has been challenged by some rough times throughout these past decades, such as the huge energy crisis in the Seventies, the divisions on War in Iraq as well as the economic and financial crisis of 2008-9. Yet, the European project, continued to grow, as increasing millions of citizens travelled across the continent for work, leisure, education and business.

Amongst the reasons for this success, one in particular strikes out: the EU’s Cohesion Policy. This is the concept by which the EU is not solely interested in improving the bloc’s prosperity – something which very few would care to deny it has achieved – but rather to ensure that no country, region or territory is left behind.

The Cohesion Policy seeks to address development disparities by ensuring financial support that targets transformation and covergence. The EU’s Economic and Social Cohesion Policy is the principal tool through which the

Union seeks to improve the quality of lives through hundreds of thousands of projects all over Europe that receive funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Cohesion Fund.

These funds have already made a huge, visible differences in our daily lives in a mere 16 years of Maltese membership in the EU. Malta has used more than €1.5 billion on a variety of initiatives which have improved our educational and health facilities, restored historical sites to their original beauty, trained thousands of individuals in accessing a better – or even a first – job and supported numerous businesses in their road towards innovation, internationalisation and growth.

However, the benefit of these projects goes beyond mere economic growth. European values – freedom, democracy, gender equality and non-discrimation are all placed at the centre of projects financed by EU Cohesion policy, thereby ensuring that such values are spread among a greater cohort of the population.

Despite the long-term objetive of these funds, the Cohesion Policy was quickly adapted to Europe’s most pressing needs, when, at the onset of the pandemic, the European Commission green-lighted Member States in adapting funding available to them to tackle with immediacy issues relating to the current pandemic.

Thanks to the Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative, Member States were able to address three key priorities in the fight against the current emergency and its economic consequences: investment related to healthcare, support to short time work schemes, and support to the SMEs working capital.

As Europe recovers from the serious economic hit that the pandemic will have caused in 2020, economic regeneration will be fundamental to ensure recovery and avoid that what started as a health crisis lingers into years of social trouble. At this juncture, the EU’s Cohesion Policy – with a significantly strengthened budget – represents the perfect opportunity to strengthen European Integration, supporting economies to rise back from the ashes, addressing the fundamental long-term challenges of the European Union, and finally delivering in practice on the mantra of a Europe that wants to be closer to its citizens.

ighteous, humble and sharp as a tack. Lara Boffa welcomed Atelier at her home for an aperitivo with a twist. Lara oozes strength, determination and drive and is gracious in her mannerisms. She is creative and an optimistic realist, with an eye for transforming

deficiencies into strengths across business spheres. It is a sunny Sunday afternoon and we’re in the garden chatting away over a drink.

Has the pandemic affected you and what do you make of it?

My mother and I are very close and under normal circumstances we’d spend time together on a daily basis.

She is very sociable and would usually never dream of missing out on any event she’s invited to. Me and Jeff, my partner, regularly organise family gatherings to which she, together with his parents, is obviously invited. Then came COVID-19. We felt obliged to adapt to this new reality to safeguard our parents’ health. I empathise with elderly individuals who may be feeling lonelier than before. In different ways they’ve all contributed to this generation and it's terrible knowing that their lifestyle is currently much more limited than that of others.

But COVID-19 has also presented us with a multitude of avenues for improvement, of opportunities.

The nature of specific jobs has begun to be redesigned and the pandemic has also highlighted the need to strengthen the labour market. Businesses are now more than ever looking at reflecting the changing needs of stakeholders, redefining business models, leadership styles and re-skilling their teams. It is a palpable new reality. The focus has shifted to survival and liquidity for the short-term; the driving force being a re-vamped long-term vision. Organisational agility is key and digitisation and diversification are also being better valued, as is strategic human resource management. It is vital.

Rounding off, the way we feel about our loved ones has intensified, avenues of opportunity and growth have become more apparent, and businesses are pursuing resiliency and seeking that competitive edge more than ever.

Do you think it is a level playing field for men and women?

A lot of work has been carried out over the past years, though I believe there’s way more that can be done to achieve gender equality and parity across the board.

A misconception is that gender equality is only about women. It is not.

In fact, retaining and attracting females to the labour market, removing barriers to entry and implicit bias, closing the gender pay gap and ensuring equal opportunities for women brings about long-term value for all to enjoy, including the positive impacts of this on GDP. Although initially I was averse to the idea of a gender quota system to increase female representation in Parliament, I believe that the introduction of such measures would boost the momentum of bringing about such changes.

But it is also true that commitment is required from society at large. The use of tacit and subtle sexism by management at any level is to be nipped at the bud, as is condescending behaviour. I’m all for blending experience with fresh energy and innovative ideas.

At the end of the day and irrespective of gender, age or experience – no one person knows it all and we continually learn and evolve.

Moreover, many may relate to a scenario wherein, even though gainfully employed, a great deal of effort is put into tending to the household, to the care of children, a spouse or elderly parents or relatives. This is especially the case for women. There are expectations to be met here, too. Ultimately all labours of love require time, effort and commitment and as such reconciliation with paid work is not so straightforward. Successfully juggling several of these ‘full-time jobs’ is no mean feat.

Kudos to those who manage to do so!

What factors are important at the workplace?

A clear vision. To create high-performing teams and be receptive to the expertise provided - bettering your overall understanding so you can focus on the bigger picture. Instilling a professional and ethical corporate culture is as important as sound strategic planning.

Intelligent risk taking and the ability to change tactics mid-stream when required to achieve strategic goals efficiently and effectively are important factors. Thinking outside the box is a must to ensure that a product or service distinguishes itself from the rest. Lastly, I believe that interpersonal communication is key, emotional intelligence a valuable bonus and a sense of humour essential!

What advice would you give to women in all walks of life?

Work hard, believe in yourself and do all you do with aplomb.

You have heavily participated in the 2013 electoral campaign. What role does Politics play in your life?

A decade ago I wouldn’t have missed one plenary session nor one public or house committee meeting. I’d listen to these whilst skimming through newspapers.

One day, a good friend of mine called to inform me that an online blogger, the late Daphne Caruana Galizia, had written about me. Funnily enough I didn’t know who she was back then and clearly remember asking “Daphne who?” It later emerged that she initially mistook another young lady, an up-and-coming fashion blogger who shared my name, with me - her true target. It is also thanks to Daphne, God rest her soul, that my interest in politics grew.

I’m comfortable voicing my opinions and on one occasion this led me to being called in for questioning, together with a handful of MPs, after posting a political comment on social media a day before the 2013 general elections. Being interrogated by three police officers felt surreal but I thoroughly enjoyed the discussion that followed. I remain grateful to the good friends who offered their support at the time. From then on things unfolded naturally. Penning articles, appearances on local television and a multitude of political

commentaries on social media platforms. However, irrespective of this political zeal I always took my involvement with a pinch of salt.

My grandfather was a politician and Prime Minister.

My partner’s grandfather was also a prominent politician, and so is Jeff. We both have strong characters and minds of our own. Having two active politicians in the same household would be a bit much! However, I’m very fortunate since Jeff unconditionally supports me in all that I go in for. I believe that the world’s a stage, and that life and roles develop naturally.

What was the most defining moment of your life thus far?

My father was a prim and proper, witty and kindhearted gentleman. He had a great sense of humour.

His mantra was to ‘’Keep Straight”. Together with my mother, he instilled in both my sister and I the fundamental sentiment of what life is truly all about.

Losing him nine years ago was a harsh blow. Happiness suddenly took on a different dimension. My three-yearold niece brought back much joy to my family, along with a renewed sense of purpose and the will to do much, much more.

What do you dislike most?

Apart from rodents, cockroaches, lackeys and tripe I do not tolerate lies of any sort, even more so when uttered with malice. Although my first instinct is to seek to understand underlying motivations and re-harmonize, I’ve learnt to identify trash and treat it as such.

What is a belief that you hold with which some might disagree?

I strongly believe that hurling misleading statements under the guise of free speech with the intent to deliberately cause harm to others is not exercising one’s right to freedom of expression but abusing of it. In fact, limitations exist to protect the rights of all parties. As the saying goes, ‘the right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins’.

I also believe that the media is the fourth pillar of democracy and yet - at times - it seems as though we’ve unwisely elevated journalists to the status of demi-gods.

How does your life look like beyond work?

I like entertaining and would have family and friends over regularly, pre-COVID. I can comfortably cook a full-blown slap-up meal for up to 150 guests. I think I take after my mother who isn’t easily intimidated.

Jeff helps in the pre-cooking and tasting phases, and it works out well. Given the situation, we’re not organizing gatherings, but this has brought me back in touch with a few old friends whom I value.

I can’t imagine life without music, even though I never got around to learning to play a musical instrument. I’ve always been fond of rock but enjoy jazz and alternative.

Jeff shares my love for antiques and we’re always looking out for markets and fairs whenever we’re abroad. Porcelain is my favourite. Then there’s art. A dear cousin of mine taught me how to clean and restore antique paintings and I guess his love for art must have rubbed off on me over the years. There are some local artists whose work I’m very fond of and I have a small collection which I treasure. When I have the time I sketch and like my grandfather I’m into still-life and landscape painting.

I prize my ‘family time’ but I do long for my daily ‘me time’, even if it’s just an hour - as long as it’s very quiet.

What’s next?

Well, there’s always something more to experience, to do, to learn. Life is quite hectic, but I wouldn’t want it to be otherwise. Far from it. However, I’m also looking forward to summer and I can’t wait to be able to travel with peace of mind. Meanwhile, I’m committed to furthering my personal and academic growth. I believe that by doing so I’ll be in a better position to offer more to those around me. That said “many are the strange chances of the world…”

Lara read a Bachelor of Science with honours in Business Information Systems and earned a Master in Business Administration. She held several managerial positions over the past twelve years in the private and public sectors as well as in international settings. Lara currently holds the post of Head of Admission Services and MT SHRM with a multinational organisation.

She is a governor at the Malta Digital Information Authority, sits on the council of the Malta Institute of Management and is a Committee Member at the Malta Society of Arts.

he birthplace of the Renaissance and the heart of the most picturesque streets in Tuscany, Florence remains in my heart for as long as I live. This beautiful Italian city echoing ‘la dolce vita’ is my favourite weekend destination. Not only you can enjoy the best Italian food but also you can indulge yourself in the most fascinating history, art, and the joy of getting yourself lost in its mesmerising corners. If you have never been, you need to make it a must to visit at least once or twice in your life. You will surely not be disappointed.

If you are staying near the Ponte Vecchio, don’t miss a stroll around the area next to the Arno River and enjoy watching other tourists bargaining their way into getting their jewellery from the famous jewellery shops on this old medieval bridge.

If you fancy some lunch when you are in the area try the Trattoria Cammillo for some amazing Italian food and icecream at the famous Gelateria Santa Trinita.

There is no complete trip to Florence, if you don’t visit at least one or two of its famous and mesmerising museums. If you have already visited the prominent Uffizi Gallery which hosts some of the most beautiful and amazing works of art such as Botticelli’s, Michelangelo’s and Caravaggio’s, you could try visit other hidden gems. Some of my favourites are the Galleria Palatina which hosts artworks collected by the Medici family displayed in beautiful rooms in a traditional Renaissance palace, the grand Pitti Palace and the Academia Gallery to witness the famous Michelangelo’s sculpture David.

and take a stroll in the Boboli Gardens There is nothing better than enjoying the outdoors in Florence as well as nibbling on some goodies it has to offer. For some of the best panini in Italy head to the I' Girone De' Ghiotti, a famous place tucked in the Florentine narrow streets. Head early to avoid waiting for a long time. After grabbing your go-to lunch, you can walk to the beautiful Boboli Gardens, grab a coffee and enjoy the fresh air in this historical park.

Italy, and especially Florence, are famous for some of the best leather goods in Europe. Not only you can find some of the best prices in relation to quality but also the experience is quite enjoyable. You get to hop from one shop to another, bargain with the sellers and ultimately purchasing something that will make you look chic and polished. Some suggestions for places to buy your leather goods are the leather stalls at the Mercato di San Lorenzo, at the Mercato del Porcellino and the famous Misuri Store.

DINE AND WINE in the heart of the city

There is nothing that beats a bottle of good wine and some impeccable food in the heart of this beautiful elegant city. After a long day and resting for a nap in the afternoon, you can head out for a long Italian night in one of the quaint wine bars tucked in the cobbled Florentine streets. It’s imperative that you book before so you avoid disappointments. Some suggestions are the Enoteca Pitti Gola e Cantina, Coquinarius and the Ristorante Brandolino.

GO ON A DAY TRIP If you have already done a lot of things in Florence and you wish to change the scenery you can also book a day trip or a half day to other villages and cities nearby. Some of the places that you can easily access from Florence are Fiesole which is a picturesque town around 5 km away from Florence enjoying scenic views, Vinci which is 35 km away and the birthplace of the Leonardo da Vinci, Lucca which boasts some of the most beautiful cobbled-stoned streets and Siena which features the famous Piazza Del Campo and the Duomo di Siena.

ARNO RIVER For a romantic time with your loved ones, you can try booking a boat ride on the Arno River to watch the mesmerising sunset right in front of you. The ride is quiet and pleasant and you can even enjoy un aperitivo which is offered by some of the tours. I would also book this before for the best prices. We used the tour from I Renaioli and we were not disappointed.

Stephanie shared with Atelier her definition of beauty, her views on the fashion industry and the importance of family in her life.

How would you define beauty?

I find that beauty is something one can also feel, so apart from being visually pleased with the way a person looks, beauty is transpired through a person's aura. Simply being nice to look at does not make a person beautiful, it’s their mannerism and personality. If you know a beautiful looking person who is arrogant it immediately makes them represent the opposite of beauty.

It is said that imperfection is beauty. To what extent do you agree?

I do agree, having unique features and imperfections can make a person more attractive, interesting and more memorable. Imperfections also feel real and relatable to many, nobody is perfect even the ones considered most beautiful.

In a recent interview, you described yourself as a very, very ambitious person. To what extent is ambition a key ingredient for success?

Ambition is key to success. I have always strived to succeed in every aspect of my life and have been kept very busy being a mother of two, a model and also a makeup artist and aesthetician. I feel a constant pull to do more and be better in everything I do in life. I feel I want to achieve more and more. It’s an essential ingredient to success as without it motivation to act and be proactive in daily life would be impossible.

What is your personal style?

My style tends to change with my mood, however I always say it 'feels good to look good' so making an effort to dress up a little always helps. My day to day style is preppy yet chic and I do love to dress up for occasions, even themed ones!

What do you think about the state of fashion today?

These days fashion has no limits and nothing much surprises me, it's great that people are freely allowed to express themselves through their style and outfits. The past was so restricted. So having that freedom to dress as one pleases without being judged to a certain extent is liberating.

Anna Wintour once noted, “Create your own style… let it be unique for yourself and yet identifiable for others.” Do you agree?

Wise words from a style icon for many. People do tend to create their own unique style...even by just adding small details and accessories to an outfit. I love to do this. It would be so boring if everyone just wore the same style!

What does it take to succeed in such a cutthroat industry?

Confidence and persistence is key, just remember that whatever you want to achieve you need to keep moving forward and not let anything or anyone get in your way.

It is a tough and competitive industry but it is certainly vast and opportunities are all around. You just have to be ready.

What role does family play in your life?

My family is everything to me, they are my lifeline and motivation. I love being a mother. It's such a fulfilling experience. There never is a dull moment that’s for sure, it can be challenging but worth every second. We are actually expecting our third child this May which is very exciting especially for my little ones. I am very lucky to have had the opportunity to work on adverts with my husband, Adrian and our children, Erik and Kate, which is wonderful as we get to spend even more time together and can imagine looking back at them in the future. My parents and husband have always supported me and encouraged me.

Do you think it’s fair to say that social media plays a key role in a model’s job today?

These days social media is a portal to fast success, it’s so easy to get in contact with the rest of the world and model scouts are always on the prowl however there are lots of frauds out there so be cautious. In recent years I have made many new contacts and had more opportunities arise as a model thanks to social media.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in modeling today?

I highly recommend starting with a good renowned agency. I was scouted by Carina Camilleri at Models M when I was just 14 years old! Never too early to start.

Be confident and make as many contacts as you can.

2020 may well have been a nightmarish year on various levels for cultural heritage agencies worldwide, but NOEL ZAMMIT, hands firmly at the helm of Heritage Malta, has braved the storm and ridden the waves and is now looking forward to steering his flagship onto calmer waters, safe in the knowledge that he and his team have garnered valuable lessons from the current pandemic and have set sail through a jam-packed 2021.

“I strongly believe that the renovation of our internal structure should be constantly ongoing. If you stop reinventing yourself, it means that you are tired. Our job is to keep challenging the status quo in order to always remain at the forefront of our market,” Noel reiterates.

In line with internal restructuring, a change in culture and mindset was also in order. This was accomplished through several initiatives whereby employees were

“When I took over as Heritage Malta’s Chief Executive Officer in October 2017, I had the advantage of having previously occupied managerial roles in Corporate Services and IT, and so I was already exposed to several fields of operation within the agency and to any shortcomings therein,” Noel recalls. “The first task I set myself was to visit every site and museum under Heritage Malta’s wing, every office and workshop, to meet all our employees and discuss any shortcomings I wasn’t aware of.”

One main mission was to assess all ongoing projects at sites and museum and address any flaws and weak points.

MUŻA, for example, was running the risk of not meeting its inauguration deadline and so posed quite a challenge.

“A challenge which we overcame – albeit not in the best way possible – and which served as an eye-opener in many aspects, including how to deal with contractors and legal issues,” says Noel.

There was also the challenge – still omnipresent – of the agency’s restructuring. Heritage Malta had retained the same structure since 2008 and remained unchanged while its competitive forces went through complete transformations. An internal restructuring exercise was therefore implemented, with particular focus on the Human

By way of explanation, he highlights the new mentality that a site or museum is not a static location but a cultural resource that the community at large may use. “We have broadened the sites’ use in such a way as to go way beyond the artefacts. You don’t visit a museum just to admire exhibits and learn about them, but also to relax in the cafeteria, use the internet, do some work in peace and quiet. However, even if you were to restrict your visit to the museum space only, you would still enjoy a more holistic experience through our use of the latest technology and improved design and interpretation panels.”

Another case in point is the allotment agreements that Heritage Malta has entered into with various individuals regarding the community garden at the Abbatija tad-Dejr.

This project has proved to be a huge success and the garden is a true example of how individuals can be safely involved

into community-centred projects through which both parties stand to benefit.

But back to Heritage Malta’s core business, namely making history and culture accessible to the public. In the past few years, the agency has strived relentlessly in this respect, visiting museums and historical sites abroad to grasp the latest market trends and recruiting foreign museum designers to benefit from their experience when carrying out projects such as Fort St Angelo, Fort St Elmo, MUŻA and the Grand Master’s Palace.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a direct challenge to Heritage Malta’s mission of accessibility, forcing the agency first to close its doors entirely to the public and later to restrict admissions and opening hours. However, the agency was proactive and foresighted enough to rise to the occasion and adapt to the new circumstances. “We found

ourselves in a situation where cultural heritage had to visit the public, and not the other way round. We were able to achieve this thanks to our hefty investment in technology and digitisation, which enabled us to make our heritage accessible to the public virtually. In this way, we facilitated alternative access to our sites – some of which aren’t even accessible physically. We also launched our online shop, making it possible for our clients to buy the products usually found at our retail outlets in sites and museums.”

Other initiatives during the pandemic were aimed at students, given that in COVID-free times some 80,000 youngsters used to visit Heritage Malta’s sites and museums annually. During the months when schools were closed, the agency produced a series of documentaries and aired them on its social media channels, engaging students to learn from home. They were a great success, as was the

competition Be the Artist, which saw more than 500 students producing their own works of art with historical and cultural themes.

So what lessons has he learnt from the COVID experience, both as Heritage Malta CEO and on a personal level? “First and foremost, to never take anything for granted.

Secondly, to always keep in mind how important our clients are to us, and to constantly focus on retaining their central position in our rationale and in everything we do. Thirdly, we have learnt to be more resilient and more open to new ideas so that we are well-prepared for future hurdles.”

In spite of the past year’s setbacks – or possibly because of them – optimism and determination reign supreme within the national cultural heritage agency. Its CEO is adamant: “2021 is a jam-packed year during which we are continuing to fulfil our mission even if some events are currently on hold. We have some unique exhibitions coming up locally, while strengthening our presence in the international scene with other exhibitions abroad. Bearing in mind that cultural heritage is one of the main pillars of our economy, we also aim to become more sustainable while attracting further investment by the government.”

In the meantime, works continue on several major projects. To name but a few, there is the ongoing restoration of the Grand Master’s Palace which, at an expense of €28 million, part-financed by the EU, is the vastest project ever embarked on by Heritage Malta; the ambitious Maritime Museum project which, when completed, will offer visitors a completely new, multisensory experience; the Villa Guardamangia project, which promises various exciting opportunities, particulary in the British tourist market; the extensive restoration currently underway at the Main Guard in Valletta; further works at Għar Dalam and the Inquisitor’s Palace; improved accessibility at the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum; and, of course, the continuation of the digitisation programme, aided by further investment in state-of-the-art technology.

In the end, no effort and no cost is too great if it goes towards a cultural heritage that is unique to the world and that Heritage Malta is committed to conserving by living up to its motto of ensuring a future for our past.

Triple anniversary for

The Domvs Romana in Rabat

tepping into the fauces, it is cool and dark after the harsh sunlight outside. The client blinks and adjusts his eyes, and guided by the flickering candles of the candelabra makes his way to the atrium. He is not alone.

Together with other clients, he will await his patron, the Dominus (master) of this household, to make his appearance in the tablinium (office), where the daily ‘salutatio’ or blessing will be exchanged. Beyond the tablinium, just to the right, the client can just make out dappled shadows playing on the peristyle’s Doric columns, cast by the opening to the sky above.

Unless he has the good fortune to secure a dinner invitation, this client will never cross that invisible threshold marking the public and private spheres of this Roman townhouse.

A TELIER Beautiful are the drinking doves whose head casts a reflection on the water of the cantharus (fountain) So wrote Pliny the Elder, in his Historia Naturalis, praising the artist Sosos from Pergamon (modern-day Anatolia) for his artistic skills. Replicated throughout antiquity, Sosos’ dove motif, on the central emblemata in the peristyle’s sunken mosaic impluvium at the heart of the Roman Domvs, continues to welcome the visitor several centuries later and signal that they have been accepted into the inner domestic sanctuary.

The peristyle’s functions were many. Besides being a source of water collection, it allowed light into the house and doubled up as an art gallery. The various layers of wall paintings illustrate that craftsmen were updating and keeping up with styles and fashions in Rome.

Unlike similar Roman abodes of the period, “the layout of the Dvmus Romana (Roman Town House) is atypical since it does not follow a straight line of sight from the fauces to the peristyle, which leads us to believe that the peristyle might have been a later addition,” comments David Cardona, Senior Curator for Phoenician, Roman and Medieval sites at Heritage Malta.

Emperor Claudius

anniversary of the site’s accidental discovery when workers planting trees for Howard Garden came across some of the mosaics and Islamic burials in 1881. The milestone is sandwiched between two other anniversaries. One in 2020 marking the 100th anniversary of the commencement of excavations overseen by Sir Themistocles Zammit, at the rear and front of the current site entrance with its 1920 portico.

And another to be celebrated next year, commemorating the construction of the museum building itself 140 years ago. Originally built to protect the mosaics and serve as a repository for all the Roman antiquities of the Island, the Domvs was the first museum erected on Malta.

Antonio Annetto Caruana, the librarian of the Bibliotheca and curator of the archaeological collection housed in it, was immediately entrusted with clearing the peristyle and nearby mosaics from under a metre and a half or more of soil when the site was first discovered.

Several activities were planned to mark this triple anniversary, but unfortunately, COVID-19 put a spanner in the works. However, the limited museum opening times have enabled an overhaul in the way visitors experience the Roman townhouse. A series of new interpretation panels and

Built between 50BC and 50AD, the Dvmus is the only urban dwelling of its kind on the Maltese Islands. The other Roman domestic buildings, such as the rural farmsteads of San Pawl

Milqi and Ta’ Kaċċatura or the Villa Marittima at Ramla Bay, do not exhibit the same richness of interior decoration and level of sophistication in architecture.

This February, the Domvs Romana is celebrating the 140th

One of the panels will feature a recorded interview of Lina Cardona, who, along with her sister and parents, found refuge in the domvs as a child during the Second World War. Lina, who is still alive, recounts how they were evacuated here from Ħal Tarxien when her father, a custodian of St. Paul’s

Excavations of 1881 Catacombs, asked permission from the then Director of Museums to take his family up to Rabat for safety. Keeping faith with tradition, Lina’s grandson also works as a Gallery Site Officer with Heritage Malta. Lina recalls conservators working on the titular altar painting of Ta’ Liesse Church when the

‘Roman Villa Museum’ was converted into an emergency restoration centre for paintings damaged by the bombing.

The anniversary upgrade of the Domvs also includes a project to replace the present peristyle skylight with a retractable modern replica of the 1880s version and install climate control units. Furthermore, visitors will be able to scroll through a tablet featuring a website that catalogues Roman Statuary in Malta, created by Profs. Anthony Bonanno in collaboration with Heritage Malta. The tablet will be positioned next to larger than life statues of the Emperor Claudius, his daughter Claudia Antonia and a statue of a child, identified by the bulla containing a protective amulet in the folds of his toga, most likely the Emperor’s adoptive son Nero.

According to David Cardona, “we can deduce that whoever lived in this Domvs, if not the Protos or Governor of the Island himself was well connected, besides being wealthy. The procurement of marble was under the control of the Emperor and you would also have required his dispensation or that of his officials to display a statue of the Emperor and his family.” Once colonized in 218 BC, and the Punic wars concluded, the Maltese Islands may not have been as strategically important to the Romans as previously thought, but the fact that a personage of Cicero’s stature requested to be exiled here meant that it was not a backwater either.

Originally the ancient Roman ‘capital’ of Melite stretched from the acropolis and temple precinct of present-day Mdi-

na to St. Paul’s Parish Church in Rabat. Mdina would have contained the largest number of public buildings, as many marble relics were found there, including a dedication concerning a temple to the god Apollo near the Benedictine monastery. A monumental marble statue of the Phoenician goddess Ashtarte, nowadays exhibited within the Domvs, once stood in a niche on the left of the entrance to Mdina.

Later day passers-by would irreverently spit upon the statue on account of its pagan representation.

Although we may never know if the Medieval and Baroque palaces of Mdina conceal a Circus Maximus or an Amphiteatre - the 1693 earthquake alone left 5 metres of debris – four fields, some of which display possible Roman fortifications, remain to be excavated. Zammit cut two preliminary trenches in these fields, situated across the road, dug by the British in 1899, to the Museum railway station between Mdina and Mtarfa. ‘Melite Civitas Romana’ is the name given to a series of excavations which have been postponed to later this year with the aim of discovering more about the ancient town. The project, a century on from Zammit’s last dig, is a joint collaboration between Heritage Malta, The University of South Florida (USF), and a group of Australian and British self-funded volunteers who go by the name of ‘Intercontinental Archaeology.’ “The USF are specialised in the 3D and digital documentation of archeological sites and have already created a 3D model of the entire Domvs site for us. The plan is for us to build a virtual website whereby online visitors can view what is happening during the excavations on a daily basis as we upload 3D images of the artefacts we find and the trenches we excavate. Hopefully, this will generate interest and finances too.’ David Cardona elucidates.

I am a proud mother of a four-year-old girl, Katrina, a wife, a sister of two siblings, a godmother of two beautiful nieces and an aunt of six. hours is not an easy endeavour. I was not ready to let go any of my commitments yet had to find the right formula. Entrepreneurship turned out to be the best option. I decided to stay at home with Katrina for three years until it was the right time for her to go to school. Meanwhile, I started working on my new business venture.

As an entrepreneur, what is it that motivates and drives you?

It gives me a sense of freedom and offers me the right platform for personal growth and accomplishment. I always believed in my abilities and after having completed my studies, I wanted to do something for myself and put my passion, my beliefs and my knowledge into practice. Fashion is my world.

I believe that it allows me to express my style and personality.

I love anything that pertains to this industry. Fashion is unpredictable and constently evolving. Which stimulates my interest to know more about the sector.

My greatest motivator and role model is my father who passed away twenty-three years ago. He is with me in whatever I do and I am sure that he helps me take the right decisions in life from wherever he is. I am sure that today he is very proud of what I achieved.

The love for my daughter and my niece is what makes me a better woman. It drives me in a way to be brave and encourages me to keep going and follow my dreams. Equally is the full support from my family and closest friends.

What would you say are the key elements for starting and running a successful business?

Have you always been entrepreneurial? What led you to taking that first step and setting up your own business?

Following various stints with private and government entities, in 2019 I decided to embark on my own entrepreneurial journey. The idea of having my own personal business was always on my mind however, never had the guts to take the plunge. Juggling a child, family commitments and long office

As retailers worldwide more e-savvy, consumers are embracing the new economy, moving away from the traditional shopping behaviour and enjoying the new trends of online. Certainly, this change has also altered Maltese consumer behaviour and online buying in Malta. Studies have shown that eCommerce in Malta has developed at a fast rate (even before the pandemic). People have become more reliant on the internet to search for products, follow brands and purchase products. People lead a busy life and have limited time or no time at all (particularly working parents) to visit the physical boutiques and shopping malls so online buying is the way forward in Malta.

The idea of K Fashion originated before the pandemic when

online shopping was picking up at a fast rate in Malta and becoming popular with Maltese consumers but was not still very popular with Maltese retailers - Maltese consumers were most likely to buy online from EU and other international web stores.

Thus, the aim was purely to position K Fashion as the first local central hub of multi-brand online shopping activity for the Maltese population for babies and kids’ luxury clothing, footwear, accessories and more.

How has the COVID-19 Pandemic affected the on-line buying market?

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic had a great impact on the different aspects of our daily life, in particular, on our shopping behaviour. COVID-19 has changed consumers’ habits and online shopping behaviour and I find it highly unlikely that consumers will go back to the old habits after the pandemic – the new habits will emerge by more technology advances, change in demographics and innovative ways consumers have learned to adapt to.

With the advent of digitalisation and knowledge-based economies the impact on consumer behaviour and e-commerce was growing fast before COVID-19 however with the outbreak of COVID-19, online shopping attracted more attention and accelerated even more the growth of e-commerce drastically. In the midst of the unknown, ordering of

social distancing and lockdowns consumers shifted their buying behaviour and avoided stores causing e-commerce sales to skyrocket. I truly believe that on-line buying will develop into the rule rather than the exception to the rule.

What’s next for you?

I surely want to spend more time with my family whilst keeping up with my business venture and also explore new markets. I am also already in touch with other brands and will introduce them to our clients shortly. I will also make sure to keep up-to-date with the latest and newest trends to keep on offering our little fashionistas the opportunity to enjoy the latest fashion collections from popular luxury brands and more. I am a dreamer and I dream big… the sky is the limit!

WHY IS CODING BENEFICIAL FOR CHILDREN?

One of the first questions that comes to mind when thinking about programming for children is: “How does one teach children how to program?” The answer lies in what children learn in the children’s programming class. They learn a lot about problem solving, programming skills and about being part of a team.

Programming courses encourage curiosity, which helps children to be more confident, creative and resilient later in life. Coding teaches children how to build with cause and effect in mind, so that things work and are adapted for specific purposes.

It encourages children to think outside the box and sends them the message that they can create anything. This allows children to ask, “What happens if I do this?” and they create and learn how things really work.

Learning programming is easy and fun, and in fact, programming books can be a great way to introduce children to the world of programming.

If parents succeed in teaching programming skills through games and game-based strategies, their children will find it easy and fun. Over time, children will learn basic programming concepts, build fun games, gain a competitive edge, and learn the basics of programming concepts.

When children can program, they can develop apps, video games and websites. Creating a website or a simple game with an app like Kudo will help children solve problems in a way that improves problems solving through coding. While teaching children about programming may sometimes seem daunting and impossible, it will open opportunities for them in the long run.

The great thing about app programming is that it can be used for children of all ages to program.

Online sites such as Udemy is a great resource for learning basic programming skills. Coding for Kids is an excellent resource for children to learn to program and thus discover how to interact with computers. This equips them for a variety of different professional fields in which they can use these skills to make life easier for themselves and their families.

Object-oriented programming is the preferred type of programming that children learn if they ever want to become professional programmers. Even if a child never becomes a software engineer, they will still benefit from knowing how to solve problems.

The practical aspect of a programming language is also important, as the right programming languages taught to children enable their creative instincts without restricting them.

It is important that students learn not only how to write code, but also how to use the constructs and tricks of the craft. Once children and students learn about programming, one would want them to have a basic understanding of how to think as a programmer. This could be the first step to introducing children to the concept of coding before moving on to the next step that teaches them about code and how it works.

The eSkills Malta Foundation believes that children should learn to program and start programming as early as preschool age. One can easily teach their children how to code through computer or even board games. Once one understands the meaning of coding, they will get a much better understanding of its benefit for their children.

Taking computer related courses in secondary level education is also a good start. Following that, computer courses may be found at every education level namely at MCAST, private training institutions and the various sixth forms and universities. Many schemes also exist to partially or fully fund specific courses carried out by private institutions. In fact, the eSkills Malta Foundation recently brokered free Amazon Web Service courses funded by the Melita Foundation.

Therefore, we must conclude that it has never been easier and cheaper to acquire coding skills which will undoubtedly be of great use later in everyone’s life. There is never anything lost when acquiring a new skill.

Focus on founding director

JOSEPH PACE JOSEPH PACE embraced the Convenience Shop concept from the outset. Along with fellow director Ivan Calleja, he founded the Group.

With just five employees, they opened their first outlet in Żebbuġ – with Joe taking responsibility for all administrative matters from HR to budgets and projections, effectively building the back-up infrastructure from scratch.

Joe says the two of them realised early on there was a new niche in the food retail market. With the proliferation of larger supermarkets, the village grocer was becoming a dying breed. They rethought the concept and brought it up to date along with realisation that whatever they came up with needed to fit around customers’ increasingly busy lives.

As they started to open two to three shops in each town, small investors were keen to be part of their success. So they developed a financial structure that could sustain a mix of owned and franchise outlets.

They have not looked back, growing the chain at a rapid rate to become Malta’s leading convenience shop group in less than a decade – now responsible for 72 stores across the island.

However, for the founders the venture was more than just about profit. They both harboured a strong desire to make a contribution to society and provide financial and other support to a number of NGOs. Moreover, they achieved their dream to open a store which hands over its profits to Puttinu Cares, an organisation that helps cancer patients which is close to both their hearts.

Joe also has an active life away from the Group. He has been president of Żebbuġ Rangers FC for almost two decades and enjoys spending time travelling and being with his family.

A TELIER How do you feel sustainability is progressing in the market and among professionals?

We all know that the definition of Sustainability is: “avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance”.

High demand for housing leads to subsequent rises in property prices, which can easily overshadow the environment respect.

Care must be taken to make sure that homes remain affordable and urban green zones do not become rich enclaves.

The issue comes when depletion and money-gaining enter into conflict and there is no legislation able to regulate it.

From a developer’s view it is more profitable to opt for something which is cheaper and quicker which usually as a result unfortunately does is no in line with sustainable planning. The only way to promote sustainability is by including it into our legislation. In this manner all developments would need to follow through.

From a professional point of view, everyone is aware of the importance of sustainability although at the end of the day it is your client that choses.

T

he current state of global development poses new challenges to the architectural profession: it must transform and adapt itself in order to ensure a role with greater relevance in the search for effective sustainable solutions. The need for sustainable considerations is also high on the agenda of local architects who are called to strive to create buildings and communities that will neither deplete natural resources nor negatively impact the earth's functioning. The goal is to meet today's needs using renewable resources so that the needs of future generations will be provided for. We recently spoke to Ian Camilleri, partner at DHI Periti to learn more about the firm’s stance on sustainable architecture, and why they feel it is so important that the topic should be high on Malta's agenda.

What do you feel is the greatest challenge when it comes to designing for environmental sustainability?

The greatest challenge is managing to follow and accomplish the main definition as mentioned above meaning: respecting the history of the environment, giving importance to social landmarks where the community can identify itself and feel oriented and balancing the solids and voids in the cities and giving to the communities their spaces back.

What is needed to move the mainstream toward sustainable buildings?

Architecture is not the design of THAT ONE building that the architect would be designing. It is the holistic approach.

The definition of architecture has moved at the end of 1960 to the entire city with the writings of Aldo Rossi “The Architecture of the City”. This is an important book within the urbanism literature, where buildings and open spaces play an important role together to represent the city.

Michael Pawlyn of Architects Declare recently noted, "Architects must urgently go beyond creating sustainable architecture that minimises damage to the planet and design buildings that help repair it." To what extent do you agree? He also points out, "We're at a pretty dramatic time in history, where if we continue with our view of nature as something to be conquered and plundered, then we're in deep trouble as a species."

What are your thoughts?

Unfortunately this is the thought we are living in. Deep down everyone knows it although we are all in denial. We are comfortable with our lift style and as a society we are scared of change.

Passive design is what we have inherited from the past. We must re-introduce and use it as our main tool in our designs: natural ventilation, use of materials and their properties, take advantages from the orientation and the shape of the buildings.

Why has your proposed project to convert Floriana’s main avenue, St Anne’s Street, into a garden such generated so much public interest?

I believe that one of the main reasons that this project has generated so much interest is because the people are craving something new.

Apart from this, the project overall would be one of a kind where we will change one of the most polluted roads within a country into a place of leisure/relaxation, to be used by the people apart from the positive message a project like this sends out.

The project was launched in 2014. Why do you feel the project has not reached implementation stage?

If this project is ever to happen, this would be a Government Project of course. The Government does what he thinks is right at that point in time. Possibly before the Government was focusing on other projects when now could be the right time.

Is Malta still missing the point on sustainable buildings?

Malta is missing a general overview, it is missing a holistic strategy for a sustainable living.

Voids are being filled both physical and perceptive, drastically reducing the spaces where people can naturally meet up.

A building is not a box that you design irrespective of your neighbour’s building.

A sustainable building is a machine where all components work together to achieve the result, while ensuring high level of thermal comfort.

The balance between buildings and green public spaces play an important role for the wellbeing of a society.

A green city improves urban life with people likely to exercise more and a reduction in anti-social behaviour and crime. It can also help meet the challenges of climate change.

A green city has major gains even under an economic point of you.

What should be done for a clear green strategy?

The strategy should have a wide view of all the island.

The plan should also include steps to make private and public transport completely green. This could include replacing carbon-producing transport system with zeroemission vehicles and providing ample infrastructure such as dedicated lanes and charging stations for electric vehicles.

While adopting such interventions, it is important to keep citizens’ daily needs in mind to avoid adding extra burdens on them. If motor traffic is to be limited, the availability of public transport must be considered, safe infrastructure for walking and cycling as well as adequate road structure for essential services or deliveries.

Green city initiatives need to be long-term – and created with the support of local people. Recognition of the benefits of green living and informed support of developments will result in positive behaviour changes by the citizens

What is the team's ultimate goal when it comes to its projects?

Our goal is to implement it not for any personal gain but for the country. St. Anne Street. was a road made for the people. It was a place where people gathered as well as a commercial hub. Over the years it become an arterial road that led to Valletta.

We would like to see this road be given back to the people. Also, in this way Floriana will become one again, as today it is split in two, apart from the enormous economical /social / health gain our country will benefit from.

What do you want to be remembered for?

As an architect, the best way to be remember is for having suggested a project to create a void instead of a solid.

Emotion in Architecture

oriana Mandrelli, a wife, a mentor and an architect of undoubted greatness and a true icon in the industry. Her works plays on a very fine line which distinguishes what is traditional and logical from what may be regarded as nonconformist and unconventional.

Doriana's work avoids straight-jackets, thus often lacking a common style. Indeed, every project has its own identity based on its surroundings, moods and other key factors. It is by no coincidence that Doriana has received several prestigious awards including; “Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la République Française”, and “Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la République Française” among others. Doriana shared with Atelier, her thoughts the industry, the role emotion plays in architecture and her plans for the future.

What is your goal as an architect?

I believe that architecture needs to consider innovation in all fields: digital, infrastructural, technical, and artistic. Including continuous research and investigation in our projects has always been one of my main goals as an architect. I think that in the creative process it is fundamental to transform the results of that research into an effective response for the users, especially in this historical moment. Our work has always been committed to designing buildings for people, buildings to be inhabited, through a constant experimentation and continuous research to build a simpler and smarter architecture.

In what way does emotions play a key role in architecture?

Architecture is made up of emotions, designing a new building, a landscape, or even an object, is a creative process that always needs to consider the emotional feeling we want to communicate to the users that, we don’t have to forget, is the human being.

This is the reason why the context, the tradition, the cultural environment of an intervention site is the fundamental starting point to develop an architectural project. Architecture is an act of love and it is born from the emotion the site communicates us.

A TELIER You have often noted that you try not to have a style.

Why? I believe every project is unique and is born with its own story. Therefore, it is impossible for me to label myself in a style: each project is different and has its own specific context and background. Nestled in these influences, the building is a response to its surroundings and one defined style cannot be adapted to all the diverse range of site conditions. We try to constantly research and think about the future, with every new project we work on, changing and experimenting everyday. We use new materials and also rediscover the properties of the classic ones through the details.

Our cities must respond with new architecture to the messages of help that the planet keeps sending us.

In a recent interview you noted, “I don’t think it’s useful to look at what other people are doing. It’s better to observe things that are not strictly connected with your world.” Can you elaborate on that?

Our work aims at understanding facts, context, culture and identifying problems, there is no need to look at what others are doing. We need to find through our designs the best solutions through research, innovation and technology always working in a multidisciplinary environment. Everyone has a different way to look at the reality, this is important.

In what way can architecture help you better understand society?

There is a sentence that can explain our tought: Città, LESS AESTHETICS, MORE ETHICS. This was the theme of the 7th International Architecture Exhibition of the 2000 Biennale di Venezia, curated by Fuksas Architects.

Architecture detectes and develops the needs of the society, of people. It is a discipline through which we really understand the needs of the community and we can concretely respond creating spaces to increase their life quality.

What would you call the era in which we now live from an architectural point of view?

I think this is really the beginning of the 3rd Millennium. We have all discovered ourselves unprepared to face this pandemic, finding our houses inadequate for our needs and activities. Us architects should all start reflecting on how new buildings and existing ones must be equipped to respond of the new home-activities we discovered during this pandemic.

What are your views on sustainability? How does it fit in your work?

It is fundamental to integrate into new buildings technologically innovative solutions to minimize the environmental impact; our work is focused on this perspective from the earliest design stage. Through the in-depth study of the intervention site we design buildings that maximize their efficiency, integrated into the built context. Orientation, highly sustainable energy production systems, public greenery integrated into the built space, new technology plant systems and enhanced pedestrian and bicycle mobility are the objectives of our urban projects. Our cities must respond with new architecture to the messages of help that the planet keeps sending us.

Never stop studying and be curious with an open-minded 360 degree view, to look not only at the present but also at the future.

What effect is the COVID-19 pandemic having on architecture?

The world of architecture will surely have to keep up with the enormous change, primarily social, that this emergency has led to. The role of the designerarchitect can only adapt to the new challenges, using technological innovation to design objects and buildings that adapt to the new way of living, probably different from what we were used to.

The house should be a sort of first aid, where we can protect ourselves, where we can not only sleep, but also work, in complete safety.

In a way the lockdown has been an opportunity to think and reflect; seeing what was happening in Italy and around the world at the beginning of the emergency, we started to think about the house and its need to be equipped as the first presidium for the protection of our health. We built up a multidisciplinary group with doctors, computer scientists, architects with whom we have proposed possible guidelines to be applied in the construction of the house of the future, also for a more sustainable lifestyle.

What legacy do you want to leave behind?

Well, the buildings me and Massimiliano designed during our career, that’s my legacy.

What would be your advice to aspiring architects?

My advice is to always keep up to date, never stop studying and be curious with an open-minded 360 degree view, to look not only at the present, but also at the future. For young women architects, I recommend to always follow their own path, to preserve their femininity without trying to imitate men.

Shining a Light on Slavery LISA KRISTINE

C

hoice. Safety. Freedom. As a youth, these three words played like a broken record in schools, by our families and at times as a form of political rhetoric that showcases how our society is built on these principles. Being born and raised in a middle-class Maltese household, having lived a life surrounded by a caring family, attended school, graduated from University, voted in an election and currently employed, would arguably be deemed as the natural course of most Maltese individuals. Yet, what is to most a conventional means of life has a deep rooted power that not everyone possesses and that citizens of the free world tend to take for granted.

It is an unfortunate and horrible reality that we live in where presently around 40 million people have been taken up as slaves, working in extreme and inhumane living conditions, surviving on the thinnest of margins.

Our own personal livelihoods tend to form a wall around what we are used to and contain us within a societal bubble, which although does inform us of the existence of such atrocities, shuts us out from seeing it first hand.

I was thankful to have had the opportunity to interview the acclaimed fine-art photographer and humanitarian Lisa Krisitne. Ms Kristine has been working in her field for more than 30 years where she has sought to document and inspire change in the lives of people who do not possess the same social liberties most countries are accustomed to. Lisa is also an activist and public speaker, who has created numerous exhibitions, and published books in a wide array of countries around the globe.

During my conversation with Lisa, she spoke up about her role and how she aims to create awareness to both the layperson as well as the heads of state about a topic that demands more priority in the spotlight. As a young girl, Lisa was intrigued by the various collections of anthropology and National Geographic books she found in her mother’s collection. She recalls marvelling over the people in these books, with their mud-covered faces who she deemed as ‘unshakeable people’. This sowed the seed into what would later become a long and illustrious career in photography, humanitarianism and social awareness.

Her fondness over the subject quickly grew and as a young adult she began writing to consulates and quickly learned more about the societies that existed far away from her native California.

She comments on how at the start of her career, she became “enamoured with the beauty in the differences in our world.” The world in her view is like a university, where one is always in a constant state of learning.

Initially, she began by documenting indengious peoples.

Later down the line, whilst being the sole exhibitor at the Vancouver Peace Summit which was attended by a number of prestigious guests, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama amongst other award-winning Nobel Laureates; she met a supporter of the organisation ‘Free

the Slaves’. From here, she was introduced to the realities of slavery and became conscience of the lack of awareness in this space.

Her priorities shifted from documenting cultures to casting a spotlight over this global issue. Her photography became a tool to raise awareness in a way that is striking, but not shocking to her viewers.

“I don’t want to make photographs that are horrifying, there are plenty of those that aim to do that. I want to use photography that honours dignity no matter their circumstances.”

She strives to capture empathy and a visceral connection in order to create unity by means of her imagery. This is seen in a number of her projects across the past decade. One of her most notable works is her journey into Ghana where Lisa, who was brought by a group of abolitionists, documented the illegal mining operations that were taking place. She described the difficult conditions these people faced. Miners were equipped with hardly any proper equipment; all that was afforded to them were battery-powered torches held to their heads by a piece of elastic, ‘primitive tools’ to hack into the site and sacks if they were fortunate enough to

encounter any gold. These mining expeditions are not only a physical strain on these people, working up to three days below ground at one go, but a health hazard with the humid conditions of the mines, laced with dust and lack of proper safety equipment.

To document her findings, Lisa Kristine seeks the help of translators to assist her in communicating with the locals. Her job is reliant not only on her raw talent behind the camera, but the trust she puts in the people who help her in getting these opportunities. It goes without saying that with such projects comes with it its fair share of risks.

In 2012, Lisa gave a TED Talk where she spoke about this expedition in Ghana, and her passionate speech captured not only the audience present on the day, but millions of viewers around the globe. Since then she has had her work featured in a film, ‘Sold’ which was directed

by Jeffrey D. Brown based on the Patricia McCormick’s novel with the same name that looks at slavery from a Nepalese girl’s perspective. In 2017, Lisa released her sixth book which was titled ‘Bound to Freedom: Slavery to Liberation’, and was the same year where she founded the Human Thread Foundation, which seeks to promote human dignity to educate the public and assist in social causes.

Lisa Kristine’s efforts in being both the metaphorical as well as the literal lens into a world that many are not aware of is the reason she has embarked into such a profession. She has been around the globe spreading the word of her travels, meeting well established organisations in the United Nations, governmental officials, notably our ex-President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca and even public figures like Pope Francis I. She is currently working on a new school curriculum to promote the prevention of slavery, as well as a number of exhibitions in Ghana and South Africa that will be displayed in the near future. The work she has put in is tremendous, but one person alone cannot change an entire system of abuse; but she has shown that the difference in change one person can make.

“All of us have well lived lives. The issue starts with our disconnect. Being in a different class or race initiates this. That is when the abuses and atrocities are tolerated, because people think that it does not affect us. It could be us, our neighbours, our children. People end up in slavery not because they are stupid, but because they are lied to, maybe with the promise of a better life. We must continue to work to raise awareness because there is not enough.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Congo British photographer Tariq Zaidi presents a fashion subculture of Kinshasa & Brazzaville: La Sape, Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes (Society of Ambiance-Makers & Elegant People). Its followers are known as »Sapeurs« (»Sapeuses« for women). Most have ordinary day jobs as taxi-drivers, tailors and gardeners, but as soon as they clock out they transform themselves into debonair dandies. Sashaying through the streets they are treated like rock stars – turning heads, bringing ‘joie de vivre’ to their communities and defying their circumstances.

From the text by Tariq Zaidi: »Brazzaville and Kinshasa are on opposite banks of the Congo River, almost directly across from one another, yet they have different styles. In Brazzaville, La Sape is mainly ‘French style’ (think exquisite suits), but in Kinshasa anything goes, from Japanese Yamamoto coats to Scottish kilts.

True Sapologie is about more than expensive labels: the true art lies in a sapeur’s ability to put together an elegant look unique to their personality.

Though the subculture is traditionally passed down through the male line, many Congolese women have recently begun donning designer suits and becoming sapeuses. By challenging Congolese patriarchal society in this way, they are returning to La Sape’s origins by reversing the power dynamic.

La Sape is a movement that is constantly evolving, as disenfranchised youths use fashion as a way of navigating their nations’ journeys from developing countries into a more hopeful cosmopolitan future.« Tariq Zaidi is a freelance photographer based out of London, UK. In 2014, he gave up an executive management position to pursue his passion of capturing the dignity, strength and soul of people, within their environment. He is a self-taught photographer with an MSc from University College London. His photography focuses on documenting social issues, inequality, traditions and endangered communities around the world.

She is incredibly talented, creative and with impressive intuition to think out of the box. At times even without the box. With this pretext, in mind, she transforms a normal face into a true masterpiece by highlighting the most beautiful assets of a person's face. Krista downed her tools and talked to Atelier about living her dream job.

How did you get your start in the industry?

From a very young age I was involved in theatre; acting, singing and dancing on stage. So makeup was of course a big part of every character. Being an artistic person, I used to enjoy doing my own makeup or that of my fellow actors/students. Slowly, I started helping out the makeup department and taking an extra interest but I never thought of doing makeup as more than a hobby. In 2009 I started working on photoshoots with my brother, Kurt Paris, and my interest in makeup kept growing.

Although I always had a special interest in theatre, TV/ film and SFX makeup, my work led me into fashion and beauty makeup and the rest is history!

What do make up artists do?

Makeup artists create characters, transform faces, or bring out the best in a person's features. Each face is a new blank canvas.

François Nars once noted, “Treat your makeup like jewelry for the face. Play with colours, shapes, structure—it can transform you.” Do you agree?

To a certain extend, I do. It's always interesting to try new things and step out of your comfort zone because that is where the learning starts and the options are infinite! But I also believe that makeup needn't transform a person entirely (unless you are playing a character of course!). I fully believe that beauty makeup is personal and is there to enhance and bring out the best in you, not change you into someone else entirely.

After all, we should love ourselves as we are... But a little extra help doesn't hurt :)

What do you love most about make up?

I love that it allows for so much self expression, from the simplest makeup to the most complex! And I love creating new characters through makeup. Each job is different and presents different challenges and requirements; always keeping me on my toes.

What are your rules of a perfect makeup?

There are no rules! What makes a makeup perfect for each person is different and as long as you stay true to yourself there is no ONE style or makeup rule to fit all.

How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists?

I do not have a signature look as such because makeup is so versatile. Each client, each bride, each character is different and the makeup should reflect that. Having said that my preferred style is rather natural, which is why I love airbrush makeup, and I adore fresh, dewy "no-makeup makeup"... Unless I'm covering actors with blood and dirt, in which case that is definitely my preferred style!! What sets me apart perhaps is my versatility since I was lucky enough to have started in theatre before I got to the fashion and beauty industry, and I think that gave me a very different perspective.

Any advice on bringing that Glow to the face?

I think a great glow really starts with a good skin care routine. That is the base of any great makeup. Another important thing is identifying the right glow product for your particular skin, be it an oil based elixir or a powder highlighter, as these react differently on different faces.

What are common mistakes women make while doing their makeup?

Trying to replicate a makeup look or doing something just because it's fashionable or "that's how it's meant to be done". One example that comes to mind is contouring! Understanding your skin and facial features is key, and going for what suits YOU best (both physically and personal style), even if that means steering clear of all those looks on Instagram!

What is the best way for a woman who has minimal time to incorporate some of your principles into her daily makeup application?

Well my principles are to be yourself, and less is more, but don't be afraid to try new things even if they fail!

Having little time doesn't mean you can't look your best.

Swap a full face makeup with something that fits into your routine, and bring out your best with a splash of blush to bring freshness to the face, concealing just the right areas such as under the eyes (we mums know how much that helps!!) and your favourite mascara!

What's next for you?

Having cut down on personal clients and brides due to the covid situation has allowed me to explore my interest in film makeup and work on some exciting projects over the past 6 months, and I hope to be doing more of that in the near future. Theatre and TV still remain very close to my heart, and of course my loyal clients, who I hope to be able to see more of in 2021. That is one thing I just love about this job: whether it's fashion, beauty or SFX, each project brings something new to the table.. and there's always more room to learn and grow.

This project provides a community space for innovation, with a particular focus on design and entrepreneurship that have a social impact.

The Valletta Design Cluster building has a rich history. The Old Abattoir, as it is still known to this day, was built in the 17th century, and served as a slaughterhouse, among others.
