Kitchenupdate

Hello, My name is Greg Burgess, and I am very excited to meet everyone. Please stop in and say hello and try some of the new chef-driven menu made from scratch. The menu will rotate with the seasons allowing for new and fresh menu items and specials using many local Ohio-grown products, starting with Walleye, an Ohio staple, with Lake Erie being the walleye capital of the world. The Beer batter made in-house for the Walleye is made with a local Ohio Brewery Beer that we have on draft.

GROUNDSupdate

I want to take this opportunity to update everyone on the conditions and improvements on the golf course. Throughout the winter, while the maintenance team dodged raindrops, there was a considerable effort to limb up all the remaining trees on the golf course. We accomplished that goal, but because of all the cutting, a great deal of debris was left behind. After the course began to dry, we worked on cleaning that debris and have almost finished. This was a significant improvement, and we are excited for everyone to see the work that was done.

As the weather changed, we started concentrating on maintaining the golf course. The focus has been mowing and rolling greens, changing pin positions, mowing tees and fairways, mowing roughs, and spraying weeds. Most of the rough has now been sprayed for dandelions, with the next goal to spray tees for clover and dandelions. In the coming weeks, we will continue cutting and rolling, and as we get into May, we will start to see our summer help coming back to help us concentrate on more detailed jobs like edging bunkers and flower beds.

The last days of April and the beginning of May will be busy as we prepare to aerify our greens and fairways on May 8th. This aerification process is vitally important to the success of the golf course, with the most stressful part of the season coming up. We will deeptine our greens with a half-inch tine, followed by a dry topdressing to ensure the holes are filled. This process will relieve compaction and allow the roots to grow deeper, allowing the plant to be healthier. I come at this from a golfers perspective, and we will do everything in our power to provide the best-putting surface as quickly as possible. Lastly, everyone will notice soon that the driving range work has begun again for 2023. Frontier Golf will start working on the short game area and driving range in the next week or two, and it will be a fun process to be a part of. So keep an eye on the progress, and do not hesitate to ask questions when you see me in your travels around the course.

ACADEMYupdate

We have been very busy through the winter at the Academy. We have set up two teaching bays with Trackman technology in our studio. This immensely helped with lessons given throughout the winter. In addition, the data provided by the Trackman has been helpful to both the students and the instructors. Feel free to stop in to see our setup.

Summer Programs

The upcoming program registrations are already going strong. Most of our clinics are already at capacity. We still have a few openings in our 5-week Junior Golf Clinic, 1-day Junior Clinic, and 17U PGA Junior League. If you are interested in signing a junior up for one of these programs, don't hesitate to get in touch with us. With the great interest in the summer clinics, we are now working on scheduling some clinics in the fall. Stay tuned!

Driving range

The driving range and short game practice areas are under construction and will be ready for play at the end of the season. Given that, we will use hole 5 on the Lilac 9 as our driving range this season. Players will hit balls from just in front of hole 5 green, back up the fairway toward the hole 5 tee. We will use range balls that float so any balls hit into the pond can be easily retrieved. By setting up the range this way, there will be plenty of depth down-range for drivers, and you may find it creates an intriguing practice shot to carry a pond that will range 40-70 yards based on the tee location.

Indoor Golf Center Building

Progress on the Indoor Golf Center construction is going well. Skylights have been installed, walls are drywalled, water & electricity are put in. If you would like a tour of the building, just let one of us know, and we would be happy to show you the progress in the building.

Academy Staffing

We are thrilled to announce the addition of Trevor Hazen to the Jim Wise Golf Academy team. Trevor is a 22-year PGA Golf Professional whose experience and teaching talents will add to the wonderful things we do at Medina Country Club.

Trevor has developed a nationally recognized adaptive golf program for people with physical disabilities. Trevor's awards include:

i. Northern Ohio PGA Player Development Award 2017 and 2020

ii. Northern Ohio PGA Teacher of the Year 2019

iii. Northern Ohio PGA Patriot Award 2022

Trevor is PGA HOPE, TPI, and ADM certified, and he is one of only seven in the nation chosen to be on the PGA of America National PGA HOPE Training team. Please stop in anytime to introduce yourself to Trevor.

Lesson Summary

The number of people requesting golf lessons from the Academy has continued to increase. In just January & March (2 months), we gave over 200 lessons at the Academy. We anticipate giving even more lessons with a second instructor this year. If you are interested in taking golf lessons, please get in touch with us at jimwisegolfacademy@gmail.com or 216-456-7318

Partnering With Local Schools:

We have been meeting with local high school golf coaches to discuss how we can help them build their programs. In addition, we plan to go to the schools for basic golf instruction gym classes.

While the Academy building and practice areas are under construction, we will continue to conduct lessons indoors in the clubhouse and outdoors at our temporary teaching range area. Please get in touch with us if you are interested in a golf lesson or one of our golf clinics.
