On every college campus, finding a place to call home is crucial to fulfilling students’ academic and social growth. The University of Utah is no exception. With our student population of over 30,000, our hope is that the A. Ray Olpin Union building will be your home away from home. An important goal of the Union is to complement the students’ academic experience through an extensive variety of cultural, educational, social, and recreational programs. It is through such opportunities that a real sense of college community is allowed to develop.

best study spots written by annet unda / photos by jordan montano Student Lounge

Second Floor of Union

The Student Lounge is a great place to relax while getting some studying in. Fully furnished with tables, desks, and artwork, this study spot is perfect for solo studying. While there is little space in the Student Lounge, it rarely fills up because many students haven’t yet discovered this hidden gem.

Marriott Library

Central Campus, near Union

Though it is home to handy resources like the Writing Center and dry erase windows, the library is infamous for being a very distracting place to study. If you’re lucky you might land a coveted spot in the George S. & Dolores Doré Eccles Grand Reading Room. It’s a very secluded and quiet part of the library and has a great view of the Salt Lake Valley. LDS Institute

South End of Campus

From couches to large tables, the Institute has plenty of space to get some good studying in. The Institute also offers great deals on lunch specials in case you wanted to grab a bite to eat before studying.

Basement Dining Room Basement of Union

Need to eat to get your brain juices flowing? Grab a bite to eat at Dining Services’ food court and grab a booth in the basement floor of the Union! There are plenty of booths and tables for your study group or a solo study session. It’s also located right next door to a computer lab in case you need to look something up after eating!

bright ideas to make college life easier

take it from me written by dustyn burt

PARKING TIPS

Know the lot letters! If you are not careful, Commuter Services here at the U will give you a ticket no matter how much good karma you have saved up. Use map.utah.edu to verify U and A lot locations and check the posted signs! Parking stalls across campus are tiny. Use your head. Allow enough time to park slowly as it seems these stalls were meant for clown cars. U lots fill up fast. Being a commuter school means a lot of parking spots fill up fast! Get here early if you can or you could spend lots of time looking for parking. Pro-tip: Use Pay-by-Phone stalls in A/U lots for visitor parking. It’s actually cheaper through the app than using parking kiosks.

EATING TIPS

Read our article, “Try Something New For the Foodie in U”. Village Inn has good prices and food. Late night runs will become a thing. Meal Plan? You’ll find yourself making odd combinations. It gets old quick. Why not try chocolate milk and cocoa puffs? Microwaveable food, apples and granola bars. Not the most appealing, but cheaper and you grow to like them when you are starving and broke. Take advantage of free food! You are now interested in Civil Engineering or whatever for free pizza. Get the Lunchbox app--it’s a free iPhone & Android app that will connect you with free food on campus.

DORM TIPS

Get along with your RA. They can be lenient, strict, mean or the best person ever, but maintaining a positive relationship will serve you well throughout the semester. Be courteous. This includes roommates and those above & below you. If it’s 3am, you don’t have to go to bed, but don’t wake up the whole building either. No two people are alike. Some get on your nerves. The beauty of college is you don’t have to be friends with everyone. The best tip: you choose your friends. SPONSORED BY CAMPUS STORE

When I affect underrepresented students like me. In first started at the University of Utah I felt M.E.Ch.A I felt very welcome and met a lot ready to go, and confident that I would do of people that were experiencing the same great in my first year. I had this confidence things I was at the University. I was lucky to because my sister was already attending have my sister to tell me about M.E.Ch.A the University and was helping me with and other resources that were available to everything I needed to succeed. One of the me, but that’s not the case for every student. first things I noticed Many students come when I began my to the University There were not many students first day was that alone and have to that I could identify with there were not many figure everything out students that I could by themselves with no identify with. coffee snob FEATURED COFFEE PLACES ON CAMPUS Written by Anna Ricci / Illustration by Ryan Blaschke

Brio Coffee

ASB

Aline Wilmot Skaggs Biology Building (ASB) Brio Coffee is relatively new to campus and is my personal favorite. It is located in ASB, which is very convenient for any science majors. My favorite on the menu is an iced mocha. The best thing about Brio is that their coffee is so smooth!

STORE

Starbucks Coffee

University Campus Store Starbucks coffee is a classic. They have a lot of options and it’s conveniently located in the Campus Store. The fun thing about Starbucks is their seasonal specials, like peppermint mochas.

Two Creek Coffee

WBB

William C. Browning Building (WBB) Two Creek is another great place to get coffee on campus. Their Mexican Mochas are to die for. The service is great and it’s locally grown coffee, so you’re supporting local businesses! They also have a punch card so frequent visits will pay off.

Other Places to get Coffee on Campus

Einstein Bros Bagels – Union Union Food Court – Union Crimson Corner – PHC Mom’s Café & Mom’s Pantry – Marriott Library 105 Café – Annex Building OSH Outtakes – OSH Honors Market – Honors Housing Counsel Café – Law Building

Try something new for the foodie in u Written by Brooke Newhall

Gourmet Burger at Lucky 13 Pub

Try some SLC Favorites!

Let’s be honest—when it comes to food, you shouldn’t mess around. Eating is more than just satisfying hunger but having an experience with the people you go with! So stop going to the same old restaurants you always go to and try something new! In no particular order...

Ruth’s Diner: 4160 Emigration Canyon Rd, Salt Lake City, UT 84108

Classic. Ruth’s Diner has been around since the 1930s serving food 8am-10pm 7 days a week! Go back in time to this one of a kind diner but make sure you go early; this hidden gem in Emigration Canyon fills up quickly! Make sure to try one of Ruth’s favorites!

Lucky 13: 135 1300 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84115

This is like a “we’ve been hanging out long enough you can see me eat ugly” type of place. The burgers are mammoth with a thirst-clenching flavor, the buns homemade, and the meat juicy and fresh—their burgers don’t mess around! Sorry not sorry to the youngsters—it’s a 21 and older place! There’s nothing more satisfying than a juicy burger (above) with a cold beer.

The Pie Pizzeria: 1320 E 200 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84102

Wanna pizza me? Giant pizza served with a heart attack, this greasy pizza is a campus favorite and a classic University of Utah experience! The Pie Pizzeria is not only a filling experience but is where the term Freshmen 15 came from, if you catch my drift.

Stone Ground: 249 E 400 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84111

For a more upscale dining experience, Stone Ground has awesome Italian food. The secret is to go on Sundays for their “all you can eat” pasta and pizza.

Sawadee Thai Restaurant: 754 S Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84102

Thai food anyone? If you haven’t had Thai food before this is the place to go! The food has an incredible flavor for both spice lovers and haters. Haters gonna hate but you won’t be hatin’ Sawadee once you go! The portions are huge so there are always leftovers and who doesn’t love leftovers, especially when the leftovers still taste delicious!

Bombay House: 2731 Parleys Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84109

Are you game for spicy food? Spice up your digestive system with some Indian food! Go to an authentic Indian restaurant with five-star food and service! Bombay is hidden by the Walmart on Foothill Dr. (yes, a 24-hour Walmart hidden on Foothill Dr.)

Ichiban Sushi: 336 400 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84111

Want sushi that makes you feel like you are on the coast? Ichiban is the place for you! They have multiple locations but this one is definitely the best!

Wing Coop: 3971 Wasatch Blvd, Salt Lake City, UT 84124

Ain’t know thang like a chicken wing! Dinner for two? The Wednesday Special is 20 Wings, Two Drinks and Fries for $20! Take a friend, a special someone or someone you know will pay and grab yourself some awesome wings with “out of this world”, I can’t even, flavor.

Dolcetti Gelato: 902 E 900 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84105

Don’t stop at dinner! It’s time for dessert! Hang out at 9th and 9th and grab some gelato! They have many unique flavors; my personal favorite is their white wine gelato! Yum!

Ruby Snap Cookies: 770 300 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84101

WTF (What the frosting)?! Frosting on a cookie? Why didn’t I think of that! Oh snap! It’s a tiny shop on 3rd West. Don’t worry you can also get their cookie dough at Harmon’s grocery stores, It doesn’t include their icing and what’s a cookie without icing? Make sure to checkout their store and get a sample before deciding what cookies you want to get! I’m a sucker for their Mia cookie.

Crimson View: 200 S Central Campus Dr. (aka the Union!)

If you’re smart, you would have recognized that this address is on campus. Yes, a sit down restaurant on our campus! On the top floor of the Union Building, have yourself a little getaway from school and eat! As an additional plus, meal plan flex dollars are accepted here. Sometimes the best things are right where U are!

Downtown Commons Enjoy life in the city during your time at the U and live in the Downtown Commons apartment complexes. There is room for 60 students at the 400 South 43 East site, where two-bedroom apartments are available. Graduate students occupy the two- and three-bedroom apartments at the 349 1st Avenue location. Worried about transportation? Just utilize your UCard to take public transit for free.

Shoreline Ridge Shoreline Ridge offers two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments. The furthest east of all campus housing, Shoreline Ridge is closest to the mountains and many biking and hiking options.

Officers Circle This historic area consists of 10 homes that previously housed Fort Douglas Army officers. The homes have been beautifully restored and house LLCs. Eleven students, plus a resident advisor, call each house their home. The programming for each house is connected to an academic college or department on campus. Students are highly involved and build a tight-knit community in Officers Circle.

Lassonde Studios Opening August 2016, Lassonde Studios will be HRE’s newest residential community. Lassonde Studios will be the home for student entrepreneurs and innovators at the University of Utah where students from any major or background can “Live. Create. Launch.” The building will combine approximately 200 residents with a 20,000-square-foot “garage”, where students can connect, test ideas, build prototypes, launch companies and learn by doing. Lassonde Studios will have three unique living style options: • Pod: The most unique housing option developed for Lassonde Studios. Groups of 20 students will share a living area, which will include a pod for each person, shared private bathrooms, a kitchen and a work and living space. • Loft: Shared units for groups of three or four people who want an urban lifestyle in the middle of campus. Private bathrooms, kitchens and work space for groups. Open floor plan and moveable furniture. Private bathroom and kitchen for each loft. • Single and Double: Standard rooms will be available for one or two people. Room sections share bathrooms, kitchens and additional work space.

LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITIES (LLC) Living Learning Communities (LLC) are communities that bring college learning into the everyday lives of students. There are two types of LLCs — those where the students need to have a particular major and/or academic standing and LLCs where the residents share similar interests. Residents in these communities live and study together and typically have higher GPAs compared to the average student. There is often times a separate application required to participate in an LLC; please see our website for more information. With 26 LLCs to choose from, how will you decide? Learn more about our LLCs at http://housing.utah.edu/options/living-learning-communities/

THE GREAT OUTDOORS cHALLENGE

Joe Newman / Red Mountain Retreat

If you haven’t noticed by now, Utah is home to some incredible opportunities to explore nature. As a student, it’s perhaps the best time to take advantage of our geographic luck and to fall in love with the great outdoors, and if you don’t plan on sticking around after graduation, there is one challenge you must complete before you leave. I call it the “Great Outdoors Challenge.” You may have heard of “The Mighty Five.” Utah is home to five national parks, more than any other state in the Union. Each of the parks offers unique landscapes and adventures. So here is your challenge: Visit all five national parks before you graduate!

1

Arches National Park Arches is a perfect representation of the delicate balance found in nature. Home to an impressive collection of natural sandstone arches and other landforms, you’ll spend the day hiking trails through a beautiful desert landscape and looking up in sheer wonder. ~4 hours from Salt Lake City via US-6 E www.nps.gov/arch

Bryce Canyon National Park Bryce Canyon feels like you’re on another planet, full of intense colors and unusual land formations. This park is perfect for a day trip of hiking or a multi-night backpacking trip.

Canyonlands National Park Canyonlands has its ups and downs, and by that I mean its panoramic plateau top views to its river-side trails at the bottom of wide lush canyons. Explore by foot or take to the pedals and bike your way through the park.

4

Capitol Reef National Park Capitol Reef is a photographer’s paradise. Of the parks in Utah, Capitol Reef is most known for its incredible landscape views and varied surroundings. Visit to take in the expansive blue skies contrasting against the brilliant red landscape.

5

Zion National Park Zion has something to offer to everyone, from the amateur day hiker to the expert rock climber. Known for its dramatic canyon walls and awe-inspiring views, Zion will leave you marveling, especially at the summit of the famous Angel’s Landing (shown at top, opposite page).

Financial Pitfalls and BY BRANDEN DALLEY Student Debt My name is Branden Dalley, I am the Associate Director of the Student Union at our great university, as well as a PhD student studying student loan debt and the pitfalls of amassing large amounts of debt while attending college. I am confident in saying that in today’s complex economy, your best shot at a successful future, as it relates to occupation, is still getting a degree from a higher education institution. The fact that tuition continues to skyrocket across the country and debt is increasingly accompanying this trend, is a byproduct of education being so valuable. As a student, you may not be able to control the price of attendance but you can certainly control, or at least have a say, in the amount of debt that you undertake while obtaining your degree. The average student graduates with $27,000 of student loan debt and that is up 58% since 2005. Roughly 2/3 of students take out loans and 35% of students under 30 years old are seriously delinquent on their payments. Obviously, debt can affect you during your years at the university but what about beyond? This is what we need to be looking at closely. My primary message is one of awareness. We need to be educated about debt and its’ effects, and we owe it to our future selves and our families to limit the amount of debt we take on. There SPONSORED BY THE UNIVERSITY CREDIT UNION

are many lenders who will gladly give you as much money as you want now to pay tuition, rent, books, a car to get to and from campus and many other things that could be seen as “facilitating your educational process”. The truth is that there is often very little financial education that accompanies these loans and we are seeing more and more students fall into the difficult situation upon graduation of needing to find work as soon as possible merely to pay off their loans. If you think this sounds like doom and gloom, it does not need to. Be aware of how much money you are spending on your education and take full advantage of all the grants and scholarships that are offered. Many go unused and should be taken advantage of.

saving u pennies written by stephen hogan

We all know how hard it is to be a university student. We have many things to manage: work, school, friends, family, rent, etc. But probably the most frustrating thing to manage is our money. Many of us experience the phenomenon of getting our paycheck and then it disappearing right before our eyes on who knows what. Financial pros will tell you that you need to follow certain principles to manage your money wisely. They will tell you to budget each month and to pay yourself in savings first. They may also tell you to look for discounts, deals, and coupons. So we wanted to share our knowledge about the exciting discounts that ALL University of Utah students are eligible for just by having their UCard!
