A HOUSING OPTION FOR EVERYONE… Residence Hall Options Chapel Glen Chapel Glen is the closest complex to the footbridge to campus and the TRAX light rail station. It offers double suites, along with a few single rooms on each floor. Chapel Glen also has a fitness facility. Gateway Heights Right by the Peterson Heritage Center, Gateway Heights is famed for its large community lounge — complete with fireplace. Gateway offers double and triple suites, where two shared rooms are connected by a bathroom. Sage Point The largest of the residence hall areas, Sage Point also offers the most variety in room options — six different configurations, including single and double room suites with living rooms. A computer lab and fitness facilities are on-site too. Many of HRE’s Living Learning Communities (LLC) are located in Sage Point.

Apartment Options Benchmark Plaza Benchmark Plaza features two-, three-, and four-bedroom apartments, each with a complete kitchen, living room, and shared bathroom. It is conveniently located next to the Peterson Heritage Center. Donna Garff Marriott Honors Residential Scholars Community The Donna Garff Marriott Honors Residential Scholars Community (MHC) is HRE’s newest community and features multiple LLCs, Honors classrooms, the Big Ideas Room, faculty offices, a library, conference room, and market. Downtown Commons Enjoy life in the city during your time at the U and live in the Downtown Commons apartment complexes. There is room for 60 students at the 400 South 43 East site, where two-bedroom apartments are available. Graduate students occupy the two- and threebedroom apartments at the 349 1st Avenue location. Worried about transportation? Just utilize your UCard to take public transit for free. Shoreline Ridge Shoreline Ridge offers two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments. The furthest east of all campus housing, Shoreline Ridge is closest to the mountains and many biking and hiking options. Officers Circle This historic area consists of 10 homes that previously housed Fort Douglas Army officers. The homes have been beautifully restored and house LLCs. Eleven students, plus a resident advisor, call each house their home. The programming for each house is connected to an academic college or department on campus. Students are highly involved and build a tight-knit community in Officers Circle.

LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITIES (LLC) Living Learning Communities (LLC) are communities that bring college learning into the everyday lives of students. There are two types of LLCs — those where the students need to have a particular major and/or academic standing and LLCs where the residents share similar interests. Residents in these communities live and study together and typically have higher GPAs compared to the average student. There is often times a separate application required to participate in an LLC; please see our website for more information. With 26 LLCs to choose from, how will you decide? Learn more about our LLCs at http://housing.utah.edu/options/living-learningcommunities/

DINING SERVICES As a student, you’ve got plenty to worry about without thinking about breakfast, lunch or dinner. Let us do the shopping, cooking, and cleaning for you. When you live on campus, you can choose from a variety of meal plans. If you don’t have time to dine-in, take your meal on the road—you can take up to two to-go meals a day! The PHC Dining Room is not only a great place to eat, but a great place to socialize and attend fun programs like: Cupcake Wars, Late Night Breakfast, Hunger Banquet, Iron Chef and more! A Night At The Museum The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is not just for art junkies. It is a place where everyone can come and enjoy the fine arts. There are consistent and traveling collections. So no doubt you will find something worthwhile. I personally have been to the Museum on countless occasions and each time I discover something new. Whether it is an art piece I love, some piece of history that accompanies Salt Lake or even how yummy the cafe is, getting lost in the museum is a must in your college career. There are portraits and landscapes, still lifes and photographs, installations and sculpture. To top it off, the art also spans the length of time with pieces from ancient Greece, Egypt and the modern world. Some people think going to a museum

can be a drag, and for those naysayers out there I have an extremely fun game that will make you change your mind. This is one of my favorite things to do and it is all about improvisation. Here are the rules: if you are the first player, your comrades will choose any piece of art in the museum for you to play with. You pretend (and the key word is pretend) that you are the artist of said piece. Your friends will ask you questions about how it was made, what your inspiration was, and when you decided to make it. You have to answer these questions with ease and flair, and it often turns out quite humorous. So give the Utah Museum of Fine Arts a try! Play my game, eat at the cafe, and learn something new. You will find you love it. And the best part of all, it is free to University of Utah students. Written by Mary Neville

Foothill Drive, head east on Sunnyside Avenue. Go left onto Arapeen Drive to Chipeta Way. Go right on Chipeta Way, turn right onto Colorow Drive. Follow Colorow Drive around to the trailhead by the side of the road. At the trailhead, the trail heads east into scrub oaks toward the Shoreline Trail. There are small patches of poison ivy before the Shoreline Trail, so keep a watchful eye out. At .25 miles you arrive at the Shoreline Trail; go right. Follow the trail south and watch for a trail split. Both trails are wide and well-used. Take the left

marked trail that heads up the side of the mountain in a northeast direction. BELLS CANYON (Easy to Difficult)

Bell Canyon, also known as Bell’s Canyon or Bells Canyon, is a circular, glacier-carved canyon adjacent to Little Cottonwood. It’s accessed from two different trailheads near the entrance to Little Cottonwood Canyon. The canyon offers a number of options to hikers, including two short, easy routes to Lower Bell Canyon Reservoir, and more

DONUT FALLS (Easy)

Donut Falls is a popular family trail about nine miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon near the Jordan Pines picnic area. The trail is relatively short and easy though a little rugged, leading to a waterfall where Big Cottonwood Creek goes though a doughnut-shaped hole in the rock. Directions: Drive about 9 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon to the signed Mill D Trailhead. From the Mill D Trailhead, drive or hike up the paved, gated Mill D South Fork Road, past the Jordan Pines picnic area. After about .75 miles, the Mill D South Fork Road becomes dirt road. After another 200 yards you’ll find the small Donut Falls trailhead parking area. MOUNT OLYMPUS (Difficult)

Mount Olympus is a prominent 9,026 foot-peak on the east side of the Salt Lake Valley. Views from the summit are considered to be some of the best in the region. Directions: The trailhead is located on the east side of Wasatch Boulevard. From 4500 South, drive south on Wasatch Boulevard for about 1.6 miles to the parking area. A sign identifies the parking lot as the Mount Olympus Trailhead.

If you haven’t noticed by now, Utah is home

and by that I mean its panoramic plateau

to some incredible opportunities to explore nature. As a student, it’s perhaps the best time to take advantage of our geographic luck and to fall in love with the great outdoors, and if you don’t plan on sticking around after graduation, there is one challenge you must complete before you leave. I call it the Great Outdoors Challenge. You may have heard of “The Mighty 5.” If you haven’t, here’s the rundown. Utah is home to five national parks, more than any other state in the Union. Each of the parks offers unique landscapes and adventures.

Canyonlands has its ups and downs,

top views to its river-side trails at the bottom of wide lush canyons. Explore by foot or take to the pedals and bike your way through the park.

Capitol Reef National Park Capitol Reef is a photographer’s

paradise. Of the parks in Utah, Capitol Reef is most known for its incredible landscape views and varied surroundings. Visit to take in the expansive blue skies contrasting against the brilliant red landscape. Zion National Park
