Dear Student, On every college campus, finding a place to call home is crucial to fulfilling students’ academic and experiential needs. The University of Utah is no exception. With our student population of 30,000, our hope is that the A. Ray Olpin Union building will be your home away from home. An important goal of the Union is to complement the students’ academic experience through an extensive variety of cultural, educational, social, and recreational programs. It is through such opportunities that a real sense of college community is allowed to develop. In an effort to promote campus and community life, the Union Programming Council (UPC) are proud to provide you with this publication, Your Campus Life, a complete guide to community businesses, services, and on- campus resources.

Best of luck from all of us at the A Ray Olpin Union Building.

The GurU is our friendly and knowledgeable guide for your college love life.

Dating in the Valley

Your Campus life

Feeling pressure to make that certain someone feel special but concerned with the low volume of your wallet? Very few U students can afford caviar and personal Seal concerts, but with a little bit of creativity and a whole lot of heart, you can enjoy a romantic evening even if you have Financial Aid on speed-dial. As anyone who has been on campus in the evening can tell you, the Salt Lake Valley regularly sees spectacular sunsets and beautiful nighttime lighting. With good timing and perhaps a small investment for dessert, an entire date can be made around watching the sun go down and the city come alive. There are several great places to citywatch, and all are within throwing distance of the University. You could take a short hike to the block U on the hill, check out the roof of the public library downtown, sit on the steps of the Capitol building, or even try the second floor of the Marriot Library. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, of course, there are plenty of longer hikes available in the nearby mountains which reward the dedicated with a spectacular vista. You’ll notice that everything I just mentioned is fun but also friendly to those with small budgets (aka everyone). One great thing about most local businesses is that they make an effort to bring us humble students good deals. I’m not much of a massage guy myself, but a little bird told me that if you make a reservation with the Utah School of Massage Therapy, you can get an hour-long couples massage for only $70. Once the stress bubbles have been chased away, you can unwind with any one of the dozens of restaurants near campus, especially the ma-and-pa outfits, which offer great deals on filling food. Remember that , as generic as it may sound, it’s the thought that that counts. If you work your creative muscles and put some thought into it, the most memorable date in the world can also be the least expensive. Unplug the computer, turn off the phone, and follow your heart. That’s what I always do.

The facts and advice about STDs 6

You will create some of your favorite memories while in college, make everlasting friendships, and learn valuable life lessons that you will be able to pass down to

others. However, some life lessons you do not want to pass down, STD’s. College aged students have a higher chance of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases, but with the proper information and guidance, this can be prevented. STD Testing Locations It is always smart to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases after having sexual intercourse with a partner, or if you think you may be pregnant. Below is a list of 2 locations near the University in which you can get tested. Planned Parenthood 654 South 900 East Salt Lake City (801) 322- 5571 Utah Aids Foundation 1408 South 1100 East Salt Lake City (801) 487 – 2323 STD Q & A “I am on birth control and had unprotected sex with this guy. I got tested 2 weeks later, my results came back negative for all diseases, am I clean?”

“I had sex with my girlfriend and the condom broke, we checked her ovulation calendar and she was not ovulating on that day. Is there still a chance that she can get pregnant?” “There is always a chance of pregnancy when contraceptives aren’t used properly. In fact, aside from abstinence, no birth control method is 100% successful. However, in this situation, you need to not only check the day that you had intercourse, but 6 days following the event as well. Semen can live in a women’s vagina for up to 7 days, therefore even though she was not fertile on the day you had intercourse there is still a chance she may have been fertile on the days following”. --Dr. Luv

your campus life

“For the most part, yes you are fine. However, HIV can remain dormant in your system for up to 6 months, therefore, I would go back to the doctor in 6 months and get tested again for HIV. It is always wise to use protection, a condom preferably since birth control does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases”. --Dr. Luv

“Can I get gonorrhea or chlamydia from sitting on a toilet seat?” These diseases are transmitted through oral, anal and vaginal sex. These infected fluids MUST be transferred person to person. Therefore, no, you cannot contract these diseases from sitting on a toilet seat” --Dr. Luv Sexual Facts for Utah (Provided by catchtheanswers.net) - According to the Department of Health, chlamydia and gonorrhea are the most common STD’s in Utah. - 75% of women who contract these diseases show no symptoms. - In 2007, 3,748 individuals in Salt Lake between the ages of 15-25 were diagnosed with chlamydia. - In 2007, 572 individuals in Salt Lake between the ages of 15-25 were diagnosed with gonorrhea.
