On every college campus, finding a place to call home is crucial to fulfilling students’ academic and social growth. The University of Utah is no exception. With our student population of over 30,000, our hope is that the A. Ray Olpin Union building will be your home away from home. An important goal of the Union is to complement the students’ academic experience through an extensive variety of cultural, educational, social, and recreational programs. It is through such opportunities that a real sense of college community develops.

How U can be Involved By Kim Davison
In college, it can be overwhelming to try to find your “place”. As school starts and classes and homework take over your life, it’s hard to realize when it’s time to take a step back and start re-evaluating what is missing from your college experience. Whether it be friends, clubs or leadership opportunities that you are looking for, the University of Utah has it all! The U of U has over 700 ASUU recognized clubs and organizations. From those 700, you are bound to find a few you like! Take time to do some research about what club might be right for you. Joining clubs is a good way to brighten your day-to-day routine and help you figure out what you are interested in. Greek life at the U is a great way to get to know people out of your major and to make lifelong friends. Members of the Greek community hold many leadership positions on campus, so if you are looking to be a leader at the University of Utah and meet some awesome people... Go Greek!!! Speaking of leadership at the University of Utah, there are lots of amazing internships available to students in every field imaginable. Once you figure out what you want to study, doing an internship is a great way to get real world experience. Go on a study abroad! This is one of the best things you can do when you are in college. Going to live in another country to study is something that is harder to do after you graduate, so do it now while you still can! Stop by the Learning Abroad Office and learn more about the study abroad program that is perfect for you. Now that you know all of the incredible opportunities available at The University of Utah, get out there and try some for yourself! You are only in college once, so take full advantage of it. What College Has Taught Me by Hannah Wilhelmsen
College is a lot. Of everything. A lot of classes, a lot of people, a lot of parties, a lot of work, and a whole lot of learning in and out of the classroom. There are so many ups and downs that you begin to question if you’re really going to school or if you’re on some long, weird rollercoaster ride. The answer, by the way, is both. You go into college thinking you’ll learn about physics, chemistry, music, literature, art, and you do. You learn about all of the things you set out to, but you learn so much more as well. You learn how to be independent, how to improvise, how to manage your time, but most importantly, you learn about yourself. You learn who you are, what you want, where your passions and values lie. It is not a simple thing, finding yourself. In fact, everything leading up to the actual realization of who you are and what you want is bumpy and rough. Things seem very fuzzy. It’s like you’re in this dense, dark fog and you can hardly see a thing. You know you brought a flashlight with you, but for some reason you can’t seem to find it. When the realization comes, though, it’s like you finally found the flashlight and the way out of the fog. That’s what coming to college did for me. It helped me find my flashlight. Living on my own, meeting new people, finding new things I enjoy, and fully accepting myself for who I am not only helped me find my path, but completely liberated me. There was a massive weight on my chest that is now gone and I can breathe. So, all in all, yeah, college is a lot. It’s stressful and hard and exhausting, but it’s also exciting and free and beautiful. So, go. Explore. Learn. Grow. Try new things. Meet new people. Find who you are. The life you are meant to live is waiting.

Up to this point in our academic careers, I am sure we have all gone through different stages of motivation and dedication to our schoolwork. As time goes on, we gain ever increasing responsibilities which makes life harder to manage. Here in college, there is so much freedom to do as you please that many students fall victim to the trap that is procrastination or distraction from what is really important. The following are some tips that I feel can improve study habits and ultimately lead to being a more successful student.
Take Notes Taking notes in class is hard sometimes. It is easy to use the justification that, “Oh everything is online, I’ll just use my professor’s slides to study”. In reality, taking notes does more than just save information for studying later; it actually helps solidify the information in your mind because you are using more of your senses to process the information. Review your notes once every day and make note cards of the key points and vocabulary.
Keep a Planner Being organized and disciplined with your time will create more openings in your schedule that you can use to complete homework and projects faster and more efficiently. The ironic thing is that if you plan your days with the important things in mind first, you will end up with more time to involve yourself socially.
Study Time is Study Time Giving yourself time to complete your work is not always enough. I know for a fact that everyone has experienced distraction while studying, whether it’s texts from friends, social media feeds or notifications, falling into an endless YouTube thread, or being on the third floor of the “lib”. This may be one of the harder tips to implement because it requires the most discipline. Turn off your phone. You don’t need it. Do not get on social media. If you really struggle with it, consider downloading tools that can lock you out of social media or other websites like ColdTurkey or StudyLock. These can be helpful to lock you out of distractions for a selected period of time allowing you the serenity you need to get your work done.

Try something new for the foodie in u Written by Brooke Newhall
Gourmet Burger at Lucky 13 Pub
Try some SLC Favorites!
Let’s be honest—when it comes to food, you shouldn’t mess around. Eating is more than just satisfying hunger but having an experience with the people you go with! So stop going to the same old restaurants you always go to and try something new! In no particular order...
Ruth’s Diner: 4160 Emigration Canyon Rd, Salt Lake City, UT 84108
Classic. Ruth’s Diner has been around since the 1930s serving food 8am-10pm 7 days a week! Go back in time to this one-of-a-kind diner but make sure you go early; this hidden gem in Emigration Canyon fills up quickly! Make sure to try one of Ruth’s favorites!
Lucky 13: 135 1300 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84115
This is like a “we’ve been hanging out long enough you can see me eat ugly” type of place. The burgers are mammoth with a thirst-clenching flavor, the buns homemade, and the meat juicy and fresh—their burgers don’t mess around! Sorry not sorry to the youngsters—it’s a 21 and older place! There’s nothing more satisfying than a juicy burger (above) with a cold beer.
The Pie Pizzeria: 1320 E 200 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84102
Wanna pizza me? Giant pizza served with a heart attack, this greasy pizza is a campus favorite and a classic University of Utah experience! The Pie Pizzeria is not only a filling experience but is where the term Freshmen 15 came from, if you catch my drift.
Stone Ground: 249 E 400 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84111
For a more upscale dining experience, Stone Ground has awesome Italian food. The secret is to go on Sundays for their “all you can eat” pasta and pizza.
Sawadee Thai Restaurant: 754 S Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84102
Thai food anyone? If you haven’t had Thai food before this is the place to go! The food has an incredible flavor for both spice lovers and haters. Haters gonna hate but you won’t be hatin’ Sawadee once you go! The portions are huge so there are always leftovers and who doesn’t love leftovers, especially when the leftovers still taste delicious!
Bombay House: 2731 Parleys Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84109
Are you game for spicy food? Spice up your digestive system with some Indian food! Go to an authentic Indian restaurant with five-star food and service! Bombay is hidden by the Walmart on Foothill Dr. (yes, a 24-hour Walmart hidden on Foothill Dr.)

Ichiban Sushi: 336 400 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84111
Want sushi that makes you feel like you are on the coast? Ichiban is the place for you! They have multiple locations but this one is definitely the best!
Wing Coop: 3971 Wasatch Blvd, Salt Lake City, UT 84124
Ain’t no thang like a chicken wing! Dinner for two? The Wednesday Special is 20 Wings, Two Drinks and Fries for $20! Take a friend, a special someone or someone you know will pay and grab yourself some awesome wings with “out of this world”, I can’t even, flavor.
Dolcetti Gelato: 902 E 900 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84105
Don’t stop at dinner! It’s time for dessert! Hang out at 9th and 9th and grab some gelato! They have many unique flavors; my personal favorite is their white wine gelato! Yum!
Ruby Snap Cookies: 770 300 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84101
WTF (What the frosting)?! Frosting on a cookie? Why didn’t I think of that! Oh snap! It’s a tiny shop on 3rd West. Don’t worry you can also get their cookie dough at Harmon’s grocery stores, It doesn’t include their icing and what’s a cookie without icing? Make sure to checkout their store and get a sample before deciding what cookies you want to get! I’m a sucker for their Mia cookie.
Crimson View: 200 S Central Campus Dr. (aka the Union!)
If you’re smart, you would have recognized that this address is on campus. Yes, a sit down restaurant on our campus! On the top floor of the Union building, have yourself a little getaway from school and eat! As an additional plus, meal plan flex dollars are accepted here. Sometimes the best things are right where U are!

Come Fly with me By Zoe Wadge
Last summer I was lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to travel internationally after completing the Freshman Business Scholars program. Two options were given: Europe and Asia. Personally, I elected to visit London and France. The week-long trip was truly a great experience as there was a large gamut of activities and experiences planned, all designed with the priority to provide students with an unparalleled exposure to international business. We were lucky enough to visit large companies with University of Utah alumni who guided us through tours of facilities and attended to personal question and answer sessions. London’s visits included Jaguar/LandRover factories as well as a couple historical towns nearby, while Paris consisted of Deloitte and the Palace of Versailles, to name a few. In addition to these visits, we attended academic lectures in both cities and expanded our cultural horizons. The trip included time to ourselves to explore the cities and infinite sightseeing in order to get the full “abroad experience.” It was the ideal mix of fun and learning, but on a global scale. The Europe experience was truly unforgettable. Not only were we traveling and learning, but we were immersed in a new environment and, therefore, gaining a new perspective on how the international side of business may differ than what we have previously found here in the US. Finding our way through massive cities and treacherous metros made for great memories and a difficult time leaving our adventures. While it only lasted a week, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I am grateful to this program for the opportunity to learn from these people and visit their cities. I sincerely would not trade it for anything.

Grocery Stores Near by Liz Carlson
As college students, we are constantly looking for ways to save money for the things we really want. One of those ways is by buying groceries for the week instead of going out to eat. Now the only issue is, where is the best place to go?
Located at 216 S 700 E, this grocery store has many organic options. It is a great place if you are looking for more of a quality type selection in your produce. Be wary, however, that it may take a little longer to checkout because they only have 3 checkout lanes. Avoid peak hours and you should be fine.
Whole Foods is located at 544 S 700 E and is another great option for more organic foods. Another perk about going here is that they have a salad bar and other ready-made foods that turn out to be cheaper than going out.
This Smith’s is located at 455 S 500 E next to a parking garage. It doubles as a grocery store as well as a place that you can buy clothes and other things you may need. The prices are fairly low and they do have a pretty big selection of items. Consider this your Walmart without it actually being a Walmart.
Try them out and find which store works best for you. There are other smaller stores that aren’t listed here that may also be good options. Another bonus is that these stores are relatively close to each other and are all walking distance from the TRAX stop on University Boulevard and 700 East. This makes them accessible to students with cars and those without. * Consider buying groceries as an apartment or with one of your roommates. Combining your money and buying together means you can get more for less. *

THE GREAT OUTDOORS cHALLENGE
Joe Newman / Red Mountain Retreat
If you haven’t noticed by now, Utah is home to some incredible opportunities to explore nature. As a student, it’s perhaps the best time to take advantage of our geographic luck and to fall in love with the great outdoors, and if you don’t plan on sticking around after graduation, there is one challenge you must complete before you leave. I call it the “Great Outdoors Challenge.” You may have heard of “The Mighty Five.” Utah is home to five national parks, more than any other state in the Union. Each of the parks offers unique landscapes and adventures. So here is your challenge: Visit all five national parks before you graduate!
1
Arches National Park Arches is a perfect representation of the delicate balance found in nature. Home to an impressive collection of natural sandstone arches and other landforms, you’ll spend the day hiking trails through a beautiful desert landscape and looking up in sheer wonder. ~4 hours from Salt Lake City via US-6 E www.nps.gov/arch

Canyonlands National Park Canyonlands has its ups and downs, and by that I mean its panoramic plateau top views to its river-side trails at the bottom of wide, lush canyons. Explore by foot or take to the pedals and bike your way through the park.

Capitol Reef National Park Capitol Reef is a photographer’s paradise. Of the parks in Utah, Capitol Reef is most known for its incredible landscape views and varied surroundings. Visit to take in the expansive blue skies contrasting against the brilliant red landscape.

Zion National Park Zion has something to offer to everyone, from the amateur day hiker to the expert rock climber. Known for its dramatic canyon walls and awe-inspiring views, Zion will leave you marveling, especially at the summit of the famous Angel’s Landing (shown at top, opposite page).

Incheon, South Korea
Expand your Horizons by Chelsea Sather
Looking to extend your studies to another country? The University of Utah has an Asia Campus in South Korea. How cool is that? Where is it located? The University of Utah was one of the founding institutions of the Incheon Global Campus (IGC) in Incheon, South Korea. The Utah Asia Campus shares the IGC with The State University of New York, George Mason University and Ghent University. Facilities on the IGC include academic buildings, student residences, cafeterias, a shared library, a sports complex, including a pool, basketball courts, gym and theater. The IGC is a city of its own. What does this mean for University of Utah students? Any University of Utah student is eligible to study at the Utah Asia Campus. The majors offered include undergraduate majors in Communication (BA,BS), Psychology (BS), Film & Media Studies (BA), and Urban Ecology (BS). Graduate Programs for Master of Public Health, Master of Biomedical Informatics, and Global J.D. Students that attend the Asia Campus are required to complete two semesters of their studies on Main Campus in Salt Lake City. The Union Programming Council is excited to announce that starting fall 2017 we will have a seventh board, the Utah Asia Campus Board. The Director of the Utah Asia Campus will start on Main Campus in Salt Lake City in the fall and take UPC to the Asia Campus in spring 2018. Follow UPC’s journey on our social media! @yourcampuslife

Financial Pitfalls and BY BRANDEN DALLEY Student Debt My name is Branden Dalley, I am the Associate Director of the Student Union at our great university, as well as a PhD student studying student loan debt and the pitfalls of amassing large amounts of debt while attending college. I am confident in saying that in today’s complex economy, your best shot at a successful future, as it relates to occupation, is still getting a degree from a higher education institution. The fact that tuition continues to skyrocket across the country and debt is increasingly accompanying this trend, is a byproduct of education being so valuable. As a student, you may not be able to control the price of attendance but you can certainly control, or at least have a say, in the amount of debt that you undertake while obtaining your degree. The average student graduates with $27,000 of student loan debt and that is up 58% since 2005. Roughly 2/3 of students take out loans and 35% of students under 30 years old are seriously delinquent on their payments. Obviously, debt can affect you during your years at the university but what about beyond? This is what we need to be looking at closely. My primary message is one of awareness. We need to be educated about debt and its’ effects, and we owe it to our future selves and our families to limit the amount of debt we take on. There SPONSORED BY THE UNIVERSITY CREDIT UNION
are many lenders who will gladly give you as much money as you want now to pay tuition, rent, books, a car to get to and from campus and many other things that could be seen as “facilitating your educational process”. The truth is that there is often very little financial education that accompanies these loans and we are seeing more and more students fall into the difficult situation upon graduation of needing to find work as soon as possible merely to pay off their loans. If you think this sounds like doom and gloom, it does not need to. Be aware of how much money you are spending on your education and take full advantage of all the grants and scholarships that are offered. Many go unused and should be taken advantage of.

Feeding U by Feng Yang
Feed
Tucked away behind swinging doors in the basement of the Union, the University of Utah’s Feed U Pantry has come a long way since it's beginnings in the Campus Store. It can easily be considered one of the best resources for students at the U but sadly, only few know about it!
Location: Located in the basement of the Union building,
students can take the stairs or elevator down and it's right next to the computer lab. The front desk of the Union is always happy to help you find it!
About: The Feed U Pantry is a food bank that is run almost
entirely by the students of the U. Nick Knight, Director, and fellow students dedicate their time to maintaining the Feed U Pantry. Organizations around campus such as the Union Programming Council work hard to help provide the food that the Pantry uses! The Pantry is open to all U of U students, faculty and staff with a current University of Utah ID. SPONSORED BY THE UNIVERSITY CREDIT UNION
