BEST STUDY PLACES ON CAMPUS? Written by Annet Unda Marriot Library (West side of campus) Though it is home to handy resources like the Writing Center and dry erase windows, the library is infamous for being a very distracting place to study. If you’re lucky you might find a coveted spot in the George S. & Dolores Doré Eccles Grand Reading Room. It’s a very secluded and quiet part of the library and has a great view of the Salt Lake Valley. LDS Institute (South side of campus) From couches to large tables, the Institute has plenty of space to get some good studying in. The Institute also offers great

deals on lunch specials in case you wanted to grab a bite to eat before studying. Crimson Lounge (South-East corner of the Union) The Crimson Lounge is a great place to relax while getting some studying in. Fully furnished with tables, desks, and artwork, this study spot is perfect for solo studying. While there is little space in the Crimson Lounge, it rarely fills up because many students haven’t yet discovered this hidden gem. Basement Dining Room (Under Union Food Court) Need to eat to get your brain juices flowing? Grab a bite to eat at Dining Services’ food court and grab a booth in the basement floor of the Union! There are plenty of booths and tables for your study group or a solo study session. It’s also located right next door to a computer lab in case you need to look something up after eating!

Your Friends Won’t Be

an effective way to reduce your workload

We have all lied to ourselves and said

-- and to make sure you understand the

that if we study with our friends we’ll get

material. You might even make a friend

a lot done, but we all know that isn’t true.

in the process.

If you plan on getting anything done, disappear for a few hours and don’t tell your friends where you are. They might find you and even worse, distract you!

2

Leave Your Phone At Home You can try to justify why you need

your phone while you study, but none of those reasons are any good. Candy Crush can wait, you’ve got a test tomorrow!

3

Get Plenty of Sleep A tired mind is a slow mind. You’re

better off going to bed at a reasonable time and waking up early than you are staying up all night cramming the night before a test.

5

Make Your Own Flash Cards Sometimes the best habits are the

ones we’ve used forever. Flash cards are oldies but goodies –- writing notes and definitions more than once will help imprint information in your memory, and the cards are a great way to develop and use mnemonic devices and associative phrases.

6

Time Management The only thing worse than having

a deadline is missing a deadline. Stay organized and cut down on procrastination and your work load will feel much more manageable.

Downtown Commons Enjoy life in the city during your time at the U and live in the Downtown Commons apartment complexes. There is room for 60 students at the 400 South 43 East site, where two-bedroom apartments are available. Graduate students occupy the two- and threebedroom apartments at the 349 1st Avenue location. Worried about transportation? Just utilize your UCard to take public transit for free. Shoreline Ridge Shoreline Ridge offers two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments. The furthest east of all campus housing, Shoreline Ridge is closest to the mountains and many biking and hiking options. Officers Circle This historic area consists of 10 homes that previously housed Fort Douglas Army officers. The homes have been beautifully restored and house LLCs. Eleven students, plus a resident advisor, call each house their home. The programming for each house is connected to an academic college or department on campus. Students are highly involved and build a tight-knit community in Officers Circle.

LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITIES (LLC) Living Learning Communities (LLC) are communities that bring college learning into the everyday lives of students. There are two types of LLCs — those where the students need to have a particular major and/or academic standing and LLCs where the residents share similar interests. Residents in these communities live and study together and typically have higher GPAs compared to the average student. There is often times a separate application required to participate in an LLC; please see our website for more information. With 26 LLCs to choose from, how will you decide? Learn more about our LLCs at http://housing.utah.edu/options/living-learningcommunities/

DINING SERVICES As a student, you’ve got plenty to worry about without thinking about breakfast, lunch or dinner. Let us do the shopping, cooking, and cleaning for you. When you live on campus, you can choose from a variety of meal plans. If you don’t have time to dine-in, take your meal on the road—you can take up to two to-go meals a day! The PHC Dining Room is not only a great place to eat, but a great place to socialize and attend fun programs like: Cupcake Wars, Late Night Breakfast, Hunger Banquet, Iron Chef and more! A Night At The Museum The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is not just for art junkies. It is a place where everyone can come and enjoy the fine arts. There are consistent and traveling collections. So no doubt you will find something worthwhile. I personally have been to the Museum on countless occasions and each time I discover something new. Whether it is an art piece I love, some piece of history that accompanies Salt Lake or even how yummy the cafe is, getting lost in the museum is a must in your college career. There are portraits and landscapes, still lifes and photographs, installations and sculpture. To top it off, the art also spans the length of time with pieces from ancient Greece, Egypt and the modern world. Some people think going to a museum

62

can be a drag, and for those naysayers out there I have an extremely fun game that will make you change your mind. This is one of my favorite things to do and it is all about improvisation. Here are the rules: if you are the first player, your comrades will choose any piece of art in the museum for you to play with. You pretend (and the key word is pretend) that you are the artist of said piece. Your friends will ask you questions about how it was made, what your inspiration was, and when you decided to make it. You have to answer these questions with ease and flair, and it often turns out quite humorous. So give the Utah Museum of Fine Arts a try! Play my game, eat at the cafe, and learn something new. You will find you love it. And the best part of all, it is free to University of Utah students. Written by Mary Neville

SO YOU HAVE A DATE? Written by Sarah Moffit You’ve got the date, but now you’re wondering what there is to do. Whatever your interests are, there’s something to entertain anyone and everyone. Whether you’re into the traditional romantic date or something a little more out-of-the box and adventurous, we’re here to show you what Salt Lake City has to offer all you couples out there.

Adventure-Seekers Salt Lake City is the prime location for fulfilling your date’s need for thrills and adventures. With the Wasatch Front as your playground, there are plenty of new places to explore. Cross something off your bucket list together and hike the Block U, located north of campus near the University of Utah Hospital. If you both are still feeling a little bold, stop by Heart of Gold Tattoos and stock up on your body art together. After an adventure-packed day, visit Desert Edge Brewery, located at Trolley Square,

For all you art lovers out there, Salt Lake City is packed with a population that thrives on art and culture. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA), located right on campus, holds over 18,000 different art objects. It’s free for students with your UCard, and there are special exhibitions that are constantly changing making every visit a new experience. After some inspiration, head to Color Me Mine at Foothill Village to get artsy with your date and paint each other some ceramic mugs. Once dinner time comes around, it’s time to get some rolls rolling by checking out Rice Sushi Bar for some sushi-making lessons.

Lake City’s non-profit Bike Share program. Cruise through the city together and take in all the sights and city lights.

Sports Fanatics If you and your date are huge sports fanatics, try checking out any of the University of Utah’s athletic teams. From football to gymnastics to basketball, there’s always an athletic event to support. Scope out sports schedules and more information at utahutes.cstv.com. After your competitive spirit has been fueled, have a little one-on-one bowling tournament with your date at the Crimson Commons bowling alley, located on

It’s accessed from two different trailheads near the entrance to Little Cottonwood Canyon. From the Mill D Trailhead, drive or hike up the paved, gated Mill D South Fork Road, past the Jordan Pines picnic area. After about .75 miles, the Mill D South Fork Road becomes dirt road. After another 200 yards you’ll find the small Donut Falls trailhead parking area. MOUNT OLYMPUS (Difficult)

Mount Olympus is a prominent 9,026 foot-peak on the east side of the Salt Lake Valley. Views from the summit are considered to be some of the best in the region. A sign identifies the parking lot as the Mount Olympus Trailhead. GRANDEUR PEAK (Moderate)

The easiest and most popular trail is Church Fork, which is accessed from Millcreek Canyon. The second and slightly more challenging route is the West Ridge, which is accessed form Wasatch Boulevard.
