Ginger Hill Grange Runs Benefit for Phillips Family By Paul Chasko

O

nce again, the Ginger Hill Grange steps up to assist a family in need. Their most recent spaghetti dinner will benefit the Phillips family of Hazel Kirk, a small community in Carroll Twp. About a year ago David (Buddy) Phillips was involved in a very bad vehicle accident not too far from his home on Hazel Kirk Road. He suffered head and spinal injuries that have left him partially paralyzed and without speech. In fact his family calls him “the miracle,” as he was not expected to recover. When David does get up from bed, it’s for limited periods in his wheel chair, but he faces friends and visitors always with a smile on his face. His support group of family and friends is as strong as David’s determination. His mom has faith that he may be able to walk again someday with extensive rehabilitation. The accident has put a financial strain on the family. The medical bills plus the costs of converting their modest home to one that is now wheelchair-accessible with modified bathing facilities have been expensive. A much-needed handicapped van seems out of reach. The Ginger Hill Grange is doing their part with their fundraising efforts. This is the second spaghetti dinner they’ve hosted for David’s benefit. Jefferson Memorial Cemetery, Funeral Home, and Crematory Christmas Tree Lighting Jefferson Memorial Cemetery, Funeral Home, and Crematory’s 2nd Annual Christmas Tree Lighting will take place on December 7 from 4 - 5 p.m. Hot chocolate and refreshments will be provided. Each family will be able to create its own personalized ornament for a loved one. All materials will be provided by Jefferson Memorial Cemetery and Funeral Home. Memorial ornaments will be placed on the Memorial Christmas Tree to be displayed in front of the Funeral Home for the month of December. Jefferson Hills Requests Toys for Annual Holiday Toy Drive Borough of Jefferson Hills Mayor Jan Cmar and the Jefferson Hills Police Dept.are conducting a holiday toy drive for area families. The toys should be delivered unwrapped to the Borough Municipal Center, 925 Old Clairton Road, by December 15. Friends of South Park Extends Thanks for Great Fall Cleanup

The Friends of South Park thanks the University of Pittsburgh, “Friends” that volunteered, and Comcast for a great day cleaning up the park. It was fun! Coordinating “Pitt Cares” and helping with the cleanup were: Terry Tressler; Mike LeDonne; Sandy Wagner; Tom Woods; Bruce McGlothin; Dave Buchewicz; and Donna Tressler, who cooked the famous ‘South Park Hot Dogs.’ Comcast sponsored the lunch by supplying the food.

Martin’s Christmas Tree Farm Invites You to Choose Your Tree We all have heard of the old-fashioned Christmas experience of going to the woods and cutting the family Christmas tree. Martins would like to invite you and your family (and pets) to visit our 82-acre Christmas Tree Farm to experience that family tradition. The farm has thousands of trees from which to choose. The varieties are as follows: Fraser Fir; Douglas Fir; Concolor; Canaan Fir; Colorado Blue Spruce; and a limited amount of white pine. You will find all sizes growing from tiny babies to very large “old timers”. Small Colorado Spruce are available with root balls for planting. You may cut your tree or we will cut it for you, but be ready for quite a bit of walking. A small treat awaits you after your tree is at the sales area (hot dogs and hot chocolate). The tree will be placed on the shaker which removes the loose or old needles, then it will be placed through the baler, which saves the tree branches from being broken and makes easier to carry, and it will then be drilled if you have one our stand. After paying the cashier with cash or check only, the tree will then be

loaded on or in your vehicle. Directions to the farm are as follows: starting at the intersection of route 51 and I-70. Take route 51 South for 1.5 miles and at the turning lane, turn left onto Darr Road. Travel 1/2 mile to the Y in the road and take the right road for another 1/2 mile. The road ends in our parking lot. Ground hogs like our farm and as a result we have numerous obstacles (holes, stumps, uneven and slippery ground). Depending on the weather we could have mud, snow or grass. Please dress for the weather and extensive walking. The farm is open only on the following dates: December 1, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, and 15. The hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday - Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you cannot visit on those dates, please visit Martins Flowers & Shrubs on route 51 North.You will find a large selection of pre-cut trees, poinsettias, wreathes (live and artificial), greens and beautiful decor for your home. Their hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.

Eat ‘n’ Park Partners with Ford to Earn Funds for Children’s Hospitals

Davies Ford, along with the Pittsburgh Ford Dealers, has joined together with Eat ‘n’ Park again this year to help raise fund for children's hospitals throughout the region. The area Ford dealers have donated a 2014 Ford Fusion to raffle off at the conclusion of the 5-week promotion. Raffle tickets are available at all area Eat ‘n’ Park restaurants for just $2. The promotion is going on now through December 15, 2013.

“Messenger” Reader Contest Winner Announced By Ken Askew

The October 2013 issue of the Union-Finley Messenger included a Car Cruise Contest, in which photographs of eight cars were published; readers were asked to identify them by make and model (not the year of production). The catch was that only a part of the classic cars were in the photos, i.e., just a headlight and front fender, or only a taillight and rear fender. Over two dozen sharp-eyed gearheads submitted entries. Three submissions tied for first place, with seven of eight correct answers, so a random drawing was held. The winner was Richard Patellos of Finleyville, who exclaimed, “I’m very happy and pleased to win, even though I didn’t Richard Patellos of Finleyville displays the expect it.” gift basket he won in the Car Cruise Contest. For his efforts, Richard won a gift basket filled with $25 gift certificates to share with his wife Shirley - from Gil’s Café, The Trolley Stop Inn, and Wagner’s Pink House. Peters Twp. Library Cooking Club Concludes Taste the World Series The Peters Township Public Library Cooking Club will conclude its Taste the World Series on Thursday, December 5 at 7 p.m. at the library. The guest chef will be Larry Kozlowski, who will be preparing foods celebrating the eve of St. Nicholas Feast Day with European food, folklore and fun. St. Nick was the forerunner to our present day Santa Claus, the giver of gifts. In Europe, his feast day is observed with special treats. Several recipes will be demonstrated including twisted deep fried pastry strips in several European ethnic traditions (Polish-Chrusciki, Slovak-Ceregi, Lithuanian-Ausuki and Italian- Nodid D'Amore); filled dumplings (Polish-Pierogi, Slovak-Pyrohy and Ukrainian-Varenyky); and the special creation of St. Nicholas Honey Cakes (Polish-Pierniki, SlovakMedovniky and German-Lebkuchen) formed in hand-carved European cookie molds. The secrets of these preparations will be discussed, as well as the folklore of these ethnic treats that make them special delicacies during this time of the year. Assorted Polish, Slovak, Italian and Old Country Cookie Recipe Books and handcrafted Nicholas Ornaments will be available at this presentation. Mon Valley Leathernecks 238th Marine Corps Anniversary Was a Ball By Christina Walko

“For the last 30 years I’ve been coming to Marine Corps Balls, the last six here in Donora,” said Angelo Loulis, who has been a Marine since 1945, as he enjoyed dinner and dancing with his wife Inge on November 9th at the Donora Municipal Building. “They are so important to the spirit of the country and a great way to catch up with old friends.” This year’s 238th Anniversary Ball was commentated by Washington County Commissioner and Leathernecks Chaplin Larry Maggi. It sold over 165 tickets. The event was organized by Walter Fronzaglio, Jeri Johnson, Lawrence Maggi, Charles D. Rose and Charles Wyandt. The banquet featured a formal program, a traditional cake-cutting ceremony in which the oldest Marine, Joseph Frantz of Charleroi, served cake to the youngest Marine, Julie Marish, also of Charleroi, a guest speaker and Commissioner Larry Maggi, General Lewis G. Guest of Honor Brigadier General Lewis G. dinner and dancing. Other officers involved in organizing the event Irwin and Adjutant Herman Bigi Irwin speaking at the Donora Marine Ball were Howard K. Weber, Commandant of the Mon Valley Leathernecks group, Herman Bigi, and Kenneth Kaiser. This year's Guest of Honor was Brigadier General Lewis G. Family Hospice and Palliative Care Announce Thirteenth Annual “Holiday Dove Tree� Campaign Family Hospice and Palliative Care President and CEO Barbara Ivanko, along with her talking parrot Tico, visited the Galleria mall recently to set up and decorate the nonprofit organization’s holiday dove trees. For more than a dozen years, Western Pennsylvania residents have remembered their loved ones at the holidays in a unique way, all while supporting the region’s leading non-profit hospice provider. Family Hospice and Palliative Care is launching its 13th annual Holiday Dove Tree campaign, which honors the memories of loved ones who have died, on seasonal trees at nine area locations. For a donation of $25, a loved one’s name is inscribed on a tag placed around the neck of white doves that adorn the trees. Pets’ names are welcome as well. No less than 15 trees will be on display between Nov. 8 – Dec. 26, at the following locations: Century III Mall; The Galleria of Mt. Lebanon; The Mall at Robinson; Monroeville Mall; Two PPG Place in Downtown Pittsburgh; Ross Park Mall; and Shenango Valley Mall. Holiday Dove Trees will also be displayed in each of Family Hospice’s inpatient centers, in Mt. Lebanon and Lawrenceville. Doves are considered a symbol of those who are deeply missed. Giant Oaks Garden Club Wraps Up Year and Makes Plans for 2014 Work is never done for Giant Oaks Garden Club. The Community Beautification teams are wrapping the gardening season with Betty Amato, Ruthann Seraly and their team of nine others who have worked more than 115 hours tending and cleaning up the various gardens at the Wright House in Venetia. Betty’s garden won first place out of eight member gardens vying for the club’s 2013 Oak Leaf Award. She will have her name engraved alongside previous winner on a special plaque and will receive an Oak Leaf Pin. Giant Oaks Garden Club Community programs include the Horticulture Therapy team who will give potted chrysanthemums and lap robes made by GOGC members to the “Wheel Chair Brigade” at McMurray Hills Manor nursing home in October. The scholarship committee has finalized the paperwork for our two $1,000 scholarship award winners this year and will be working on the 2014 scholarship process. The Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania has announced the Honor Roll of Exceptional Horticulturists Awards. This state award is presented annually to members who have exhibited their expertise and knowledge of plant materials, is well read on the plant world, encourages gardening programs at schools and elsewhere and serves the garden club, community, and country when called upon. Giant Oaks Garden Club Co President Judie Ball received the exceptional Butterfly Award in recognition of her outstanding efforts on behalf of our club at a recent District event. Plans are being made for the upcoming 2014 Plant Sale as well as our flower show – look for details later. The Appropriations committee will meet soon to distribute the almost $10,000 charitable fund donations the club gives each year. In past years more than a dozen groups benefited. The 2013 programs included outstanding speakers from the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, Doug Oster on Bulbs as well as the container arranging hands on workshop at Simmons Farm to name a few. The program chairperson for 2014 has a unique and wonderful lineup of upcoming programs such as a twig artist and floral design demonstrations. Sam & Bev Minor Named 2013 Philanthropists of the Year The Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF) is pleased to announce the 2013 Philanthropists of the Year: Sam and Bev Minor, owners of the SpringHouse Country Store, Creamery, and Eatery in Eight Four, PA. Sam and Bev Minor were both raised on farms, and after graduating from Pennsylvania State University and working in a corporate setting, they wanted a business that would better the community and also be a family affair. They founded the Sam and Bev Minor SpringHouse in 1975. Now, nearly 40 years later, the business is thriving and three of their children are involved: Marcia manages the store, Sam runs the dairy farm, and Jill oversees catering. Two other children live out of state, but whenever they visit, they jump right back into the action. The Minors were named Master Farmers in 1998 by Penn State for “high achievement in farming and community service.” Mr. Minor was also named an Alumni Fellow at PSU’s College of Agriculture in 1989. Over the years he has been involved with the Pennsylvania Farmers Association, Pennsylvania Holstein Association, Penn State Cooperative Association, and is a PSU delegate to the National Council on Agricultural Research, Extension, and Teaching. Locally, he was a member of the Washington Hospital (now Washington Health System) Board and helped in the hospital’s recent capital campaign. He is a former school board member of Canon-McMillan School District and a former member of the North Strabane Township Recreation Committee. He is also a member of the administrative board and a lay speaker at the Grace United Methodist Church. Mrs. Minor was recognized in 2006 as one of Pennsylvania’s Best 50 Women in Business. She serves on the Pennsylvania Dairy Stakeholders Board and chairs the Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board. She also is active in the state Dairy Princess Program and the Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program Board. Locally, the Minors have been very involved for many years with 4-H and the Washington County Agricultural Fair. Community charities they support include: Washington Health System, Grace United Methodist Church, the Bradford House, Domestic Violence Services of SWPA, Washington City Mission, Washington County Humane Society, Washington County Food Bank, and the WCCF.

Monongahela Lightup Night By Paul Chasko

Over 200 moms, dads, kids and entertainers were jammed into Chess Park in Monongahela to welcome Santa and his entourage to the light–up festivities. This was a Tri-Community holiday light-up celebration sponsored by the Monongahela/Donora Lions Club and New Eagle. A group of musicians from Ringgold High School held center stage in the Gazebo playing Christmas music as Santa arrived with a bevy of elves. After lighting the tree, Santa and his “Elves” circulated through the crowd greeting all the kids and posing for photos. Santa soon left for his house in mid-town. Those that stayed in Chess Park were entertained by dance groups from “Miss Lori’s Studio”. The entire group followed Santa into mid-town where the entertainment continued and was wrapped up by fireworks. A fun evening for all who were there – especially the kids who received treats along the way.

When you file your taxes you'll need documentation for the expenses and proceeds of the sale. And once you file your return, you'll want to keep the paperwork in case you're audited. • Keep proof of improvements and prior purchases. This is for tax purposes, too. The IRS allows you to add the cost of improvements to your home's cost basis during the time you own the home, which is nice if you have a sizeable capital gain. But to use this tax provision, you need to keep receipts of everything spent on home improvement. • If you sell and don't immediately purchase another home, you'll need a safe place to put your money. They recommend putting your cash into a money market fund. A money market mutual fund offers safety and a reasonable rate of return while giving you daily access to your money complete with check-writing privileges. • Stay on top of tax laws. A recently passed law allows you to exclude from tax a significant portion of the profits from the sale of your primary residence. Because tax laws are constantly changing, you'll want to stay on top of tax laws to avoid losing a lot of money. It is always best to consult a professional tax consultant regarding tax laws in any given year. • Local sellers have a tendency to find their next home even before closing on their existing home, but don't feel pressured if you are moving to unfamiliar territory. It may be in your best interest to scope out a variety of areas and

housing options that meet your family's needs. It's okay to take your time purchasing your next home; rent for awhile if you'd like extra time or want to try an area out first before buying. “Keep in mind that you have two years to defer tax on your house-sale profits," Tyson and Brown point out. • Re-evaluate your personal finances if your situation changes before you buy another house. For example, you may receive a promotion, have a baby, go through a divorce, etc. You'll need to reconsider your finances and how much you can afford to pay for your new house. • Think through your next down payment. Brown and Tyson recommend that when you have sufficient equity from the sale it makes the most sense to put at least 20% down on your next house in order to qualify for the best mortgage rates and programs. If you can make more than a 20% down payment, you'll want to consider whether you can earn a high enough return than if that money was invested elsewhere. "Younger home buyers willing to take on more investment risk should lean toward a 20% down payment, whereas older home buyers who tend to invest less aggressively should opt for larger down payments," the pair recommends.

Bethel Park Council Votes to Support Construction of Spencer Family YMCA On Monday, November 11 the Bethel Park Council voted to approve the plans of the not-for-profit Y of Greater Pittsburgh to construct the new Spencer Family YMCA at the Blade Runners ice rink complex off of Church Road. The Y of Greater Pittsburgh purchased the Blade Runners ice rink in Fall 2012. The Y plans to keep one of the ice rinks and renovate the rest of the property into a full-service YMCA to replace its current location on McMurray Road. While the current South Hills Family YMCA serves nearly 6,500 residents from Upper St. Clair, Bethel Park, Mt. Lebanon and Bridgeville, the new YMCA will be able to accommodate more than 13,000 community members and provide a full range of services. The Spencer Family YMCA will include: • State of the art wellness center • Sports Court • Indoor Aquatic Center • Ice rink • Two group exercise studios • Locker rooms • Community all-purpose room • Child watch area Programs at the Y will be catered to all ages. Youth development programs will include teen leadership clubs, after-school programs, sports leagues, swimming lessons, and summer camps, including Camp AIM for children with special needs. The location of the new Y is also within walking distance of Bethel Park High School, allowing for partnerships with the school. Adults can take advantage of the Y’s variety of group fitness classes, wellness programs, exercise equipment and personal training services, and parents can enjoy on-site child watch services while they exercise. Additionally, the Y will offer several family programs, including family nights, parent/child Indian Guides & Princesses, and the Healthy Family Home program. Because the South Hills has one of the largest senior populations in the region, the Y will also tailor several cardio, yoga and aqua therapy classes to seniors. The Y will use sustainable practices relevant to design and construction during all phases of the project. The Y is also expected to employ nearly 75 additional people.

SOUTH HILLS FRIENDS OF THE MONTOUR TRAIL INVITES PUBLIC TO DECEMBER MEETING The South Hills Friends of the Montour Trail is a group of individuals interested in the maintenance, improvement and promotion of 11 miles of Montour Trail from Library (Milepost 35.3) to Clairton (Milepost 46.3). The Friends meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the South Park Township Community room, located at 2675 Brownsville Road, South Park. The December 2013 meeting will be held on December 10. Individuals interested in the Montour Trail are encouraged to attend. Local Teen Makes Loom Bracelets for Make-A-Wish By Colette Dell

It all began with a wish that came true through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. It inspired a young girl to raise money so other kids could have their wishes come true, too. Peyton Myers, 13, of Eighty-Four, who has hypo-trophic cardiomyopathy and Noonan’s syndrome, was granted her wish at age 3 when Peyton with the ONU softball team. she was sent to Walt Disney World. Now, she has begun making and selling rainbow loom bracelets to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Peyton’s mom, Pam Meyers, has been involved with Make-A-Wish for the past ten years. She has done fundraising, spoke at events, and is a “wish giver” - she helps kids decide what their wishes are. “When I saw how it [the trip to Disney] made an impact on Peyton, I wanted other families to have that experience,” Pam said. Now, Peyton has joined her mom in this endeavor. She started out by selling the bracelets by herself, for 50¢ - $1, until this past June, when she attended a recruiting event for her older sister at Ohio Northern University. There, two coaches saw her making the bracelets. They bought two bracelets for $20 that day. Now, they buy supplies for her and the school sells her bracelets at athletic events. Collectively, between her personal sales and the university’s, she has raised approximately $1,700.00. Peyton admits that keeping up with her bracelet projects and other responsibilities can be a challenge, but she enjoys these projects. “It’s been really fun, but sometimes it’s been hard keeping up with school work,” Peyton said. This month, on Dec.13 and 14 and Dec. 16 - Dec. 20, Make-A-Wish will be teaming up with Wish 99.7, to raise money for the foundation, and on Dec. 19, Peyton will be at Robinson Town Center making her bracelets live on the webcast.

West Jefferson Hills Chamber of Commerce Holds Passing of the Gavel Ceremony A ceremonial Passing of the Gavel from one veteran to another was accomplished on Veterans’ Day in a special ceremony at Wintzell’s Oyster House, sponsored by the West Jefferson Hills Chamber of Commerce. District Judge Pat A. Capolupo, an Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam, will retire as Magisterial District Judge for Jefferson Hills, Pleasant Hills and South Park. Reschenthaler promised to continue programs with a special emphasis on our youth. “I’m looking forward to working to help our communities prevent crime and making them the safest, most informed and law abiding communities in the country,” he said. Capolupo, who has been judge since 2008, said that he and Reschenthaler are working together to ensure a smooth transition. “I’m confident that we have a good, fair and conscientious person to take over,” Capolupo said.

Lights to Shine for Twilight Home Tour Proceeds Benefit Three Charities Twinkling white lights, colorful shining bulbs and luminaries will generate festive settings for this year’s Twilight Holiday Home Tour, sponsored by the 20th Century Club of McKeesport from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, December 7. Shelly Henderson, club president, said the change in hours made in response to requests will allow viewing in the daylight but also in evening so outside and inside decorations when lit will look their best. Previously, the homes were open only in the afternoon, said Henderson. The tour will feature 5 homes in Elizabeth Twp. showcasing holiday collections and decorations as well as an array of interior designs and architecture. The Elizabeth Township Historical Society’s 1790 Greenock Log House will also be staged for an 18th century Christmas. Floreffe Vendor Show is Brrrrrilliant South Park Historical Society Holding Annual Christmas Party

Despite the drop in temperature and the awful wind many local residents came out to spend the early afternoon at the now semi-annual craft/vendor show at the Floreffe Fire Hall. Avon representative Sonja McCutcheon was there showing off the new line of Christmas items and domestic awareness jewelry. Scots-Irish Celebration Planned in South Park Dec. 1 The Oliver Miller Homestead will celebrate Scots Sunday, a fun-filled day that pays tribute to Oliver Miller’s Scottish heritage, on Sunday, December 1 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The Homestead will feature Scots dancing, games, food, and talents. The Scots Dancers will perform traditional dances in the barn, and guests will be invited to join in the fun. A Scots Tea will be on display in the keeping room with more food being prepared in the open hearth fireplace, outdoor bake oven and fire pit.Historic crafts such as spinning, weaving, quilting, and blacksmith work will be demonstrated. Tours of the Stone House, Log House, springhouse, forge, and barn will be given throughout the afternoon. Traditional Holiday Celebrations Scheduled at the “Village of Venetia” To remember the holiday traditions connected to the rich history of Peters Township, Finleyville and South Park as well as begin some new ones, the Village of Venetia will offer a series of traditional holiday events. The “Village” consists of three historical venues, located between 788 and 815 Venetia Road in Peters Township, including Wright’s United Methodist Church, the Venetia Community Center in the old schoolhouse building, and the Wright House and Museum of Western Expansion. This first-time event is a coordinated effort among the Venetia Heritage Society, the Peters Creek Historical Society, Wright’s United Methodist Church, and the DARE Model Railroad Club as well as several area Girl Scout Troops. “We have a unique opportunity here to go back to the village concept of small town settlements and provide a community celebration for the holidays,” said Rev. Richard Roberts, pastor at Wright’s United Methodist Church. The festivities kick off on Friday, December 6 with the Tree Lighting Ceremony from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Venetia Community Center. Grab a cup of hot chocolate and join the Dempseytown Ramblers and Children’s Choir from Edward’s United Methodist Church for holiday music. The Embody Dance Studio will perform and the DARE Model Railroad Holiday display will be open in the

Venetia Community Center for tours on Friday and Saturday. Saturday, December 7 includes events from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Wright’s UMC. Begin the day with breakfast in Santa’s Workshop where children can build holiday gifts and then view the new display of nativities from around the world. There will be refreshments available and a holiday bake sale. On Sunday, December 8, the seventh annual Candlelight Soup and Stroll will be held at the Wright House and Museum of Western Expansion, from noon to 5 p.m. Tour the 1816 Wright House, decorated with natural Christmas greens, and enjoy a candlelit meal of traditional homemade soups, breads and desserts. The original log cabin and grounds will also be open and docents will provide details on this national historical landmark. Children can visit Father Christmas and storyteller Linda Nickles will present historical holiday tales from 1:00-3:30 p.m. Admission is available at the door only and take-out food is available. Pennsylvania Trolley Museum Welcomes Santa on a Trolley A very popular and unique way to see Santa will take place this December when Santa trades in his sleigh for an antique streetcar to kick off Santa Trolley at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum. During Santa Trolley, children take a trolley ride with Santa and make sure that he has their Christmas list, while parents and grandparents enjoy caroling and the scenic view from a beautifully restored vintage streetcar. Santa Trolley dates are November 29 December 1, December 7 - 8 and December 14 - 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the last trolley with Santa leaving at 4 p.m. Bring your camera to take your child’s photo with Santa! An End and a Beginning: Hogmanay and Hagis in South Park The Oliver Miller Homestead will celebrate Hogmanay on Sunday, December 8 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Hogmanay is the Scot’s way to celebrate the New Year Day. Some of the superstitions which the Scots believed would bring good luck for the New Year are to pay off debts, tune musical instruments, wash and mend clothing, wind clocks and return borrowed items. Hagis will be cooked over the fire. “Auld Land Syne” will be sung and “first footing” will be observed. Also greetings of “Guid New Year” will be exchanged between guest and docents. The associates, in period dress, will also conduct tours of the Stone House, the springhouse, the log house, the forge, demonstration shed, and the barn, and will present ongoing demonstrations of spinning, weaving, quilting, open hearth cooking, blacksmith work, and the use of hand tools to make everyday items. The Trading Post, which is located in the barn, will be open for business with books, trade goods, and items made at the Homestead available for sale. Jefferson Hills Physician to Lead Medical Mission Team to Ecuador Local physician Dr. Martin Johns of Jefferson Hills will be serving as team leader for a mission trip to Ecuador in March 2014 with Volunteers in Medical Missions (VIMM). Dr. Johns is the Associate Residency Director for the Family Medicine Residency of UPMC McKeesport and is a native of McMurray. He has previously been a team member with VIMM in Guatemala and has served as team leader several times in Peru and most recently, in Kenya. Dr. Johns states, “I have been going on mission trips with VIMM since 2006, but this is my first trip to Ecuador. It is exciting to help VIMM return to a mission site where we have been actively involved for several years.” Based in Seneca, South Carolina, VIMM is a non-profit, interdenominational organization that sends short-term mission teams to minister in medically deprived areas of the world. Since 1986 teams of physicians, medical support staff, and non-medical people have provided medical care in third-world countries to enhance and develop the missionary outreaches of local churches in rural villages. The mission trip to Ecuador is March 15-21, 2014. Medical providers (physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants), pharmacists, nurses, and non-medical personnel are needed to form a team of approximately 15 members. Trip applications may be submitted online. The VIMM team will fly to Quito, Ecuador where they will board a bus for travel to the town of Ambato. From this home base they will venture daily to remote villages in the Andes, sometimes at elevations over 14,000 ft. Their one-week mission will be spent providing care for the Quichihua people. An August 17th blaze caused by an electrical shortage destroyed the Rib Crib on Blaine Hill in Elizabeth Borough. Restaurant Owner Mike Fitzpatrick, worked endless hours with his staff to clean the charred rubble. Bob Black Total Restoration was able to remodel the Rib Crib, making it bigger and better! A new horseshoe -shaped bar will now allow for more customers. The Rib Crib will also begin offering a lunch menu, served between 12 -3 p.m., with take-out service available. Clairton Elementary teacher Ms. Schweitzer recently used an online fundraising resource to fund a book project she calls "Books for FirstGrade Buddies." Ms. Schweitzer registered with donorschoose.org and began a request for books and bins that allow students to read for pleasure and to reach individual milestones within their grade level. She raised $850, enough to fully fund the project. Red Ribbon week took place from October 28-November 1, 2013. The Red Ribbon Campaign is a way for people and communities to take a visible stand against drugs and the creation of a drug-free America. At Clairton Elementary, the students participated in themed dress days. Also, students were invited to participate in an individual poster contest depicting the importance of living a drugfree life. Prizes were awarded to the top two individual poster winners in each grade and top two classrooms for the door contest.

Students at Clairton Elementary took to the polls to elect representatives for Bear Paws Against Bullying (BPAB) and Student Leadership Team (SLT) for grades 3-5. Candidates had to get parent permission, make a campaign poster, and deliver a written speech to their respected class. Councilwoman and Deputy Mayor Kathy Tachoir kicked off the candidate speeches with some opening remarks on the importance of serving others and characteristics needed to be a good leader. After the assembly, students voted in their homerooms, ballots were collected and counted.

Mrs. Blotzer's 5h grade class and the entire elementary celebrated classmate Kyra Frankert for Outstanding Academic Achievement in Science. Kyra, 10 years old, earned a perfect 100% score of 2269 on her 4th grade Science PSSA Exam, which places her in the advanced range. Kyra's classmates and teachers were so impressed they made her a cake and celebrated her success on November 13th. Kyra will also be honored at the board meeting.

The Challenge Program (TCP) mission is to partner with businesses to motivate high school students to excel both in and out of the classroom. This partnership creates good habits in students and provides businesses with tangible results for their investments. The Challenge Program rewards four students from each of the sophomore, junior and senior classes a $250 check, totaling twelve incentives per school in the following categories: Academic Excellence, Academic Improvement, Community Service, and Attendance. The Challenge Program is piloting the addition of a 5thaward in 15 schools called the STEM Award.(Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Several students had the opportunity to participate in a nationwide day of mentoring on Wednesday, October 16. These students were warmly welcomed at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. They were able to tour the various floors of the hospital and speak with professionals in the building about job opportunities. Ms. Sirbaugh, Ms. Johnson, Mrs. Marshman and the students were given information on ways young people can volunteer at Children's Hospital. They were also introduced to Ike, a Chinese-crested chihihuaha, who works as a therapy dog in the hospital. It was a great experience and we are very proud of the students for their maturity and professionalism during our visit.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) promotes physical, emotional, social and intellectual development in 3rd - 8th grade girls. GOTR and friends attended the Clean Air Dash 5K race/1 mile fun run/walk and Festival on October 16th along the South Side Riverfront Trail. The day was sponsored by The Heinz Endowments Breathe Project.

Students in CASTLE (Clairton's After School Teaching & Learning Experience) visited Carrie Furnace to learn about air quality, pollution, and effects on the environment. On November 12, Clairton City School District hosted Parents Math Workshop to introduce parents to the new Common Core Standards. Each grade, K – 8,hosted a workshop and parents were shown the new curriculum, "GO MATH!" Over 75 parents/guardians attended the afternoon workshop. The workshops were designed to show the adults how the curriculum has changed and how the new standards are more rigorous, exploratory, and investigative then the previous curriculum.

Mon Valley Hospital Receives Donation from Ringgold Lady Rams The Ringgold High School girls soccer team donated $1,251 to Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Charles L. and Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center from the team’s 2nd Annual PinkOut fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Some senior Lady Rams recently met with hospital staff to present the check. Sitting is Kathy Cameron of New Eagle, wife of Head Coach Tom Cameron. Mrs. Cameron, a breast cancer survivor treated at MVH, spearheaded the committee that organized the fundraiser. She said her goal this year was to raise $1,000, after raising $900 last year for the Regional Cancer Center. West Jefferson Hills SD Board Members Honored by PSBA Two members of the West Jefferson Hills School District have been honored by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association for their valued years of service to the district. School directors Anna Louise Lilley and Deborah Pozycki each received certificates of recognition, naming the two to PSBA’s Honor Roll of School Board Service. Nativity Scene at Brightwood Christian Church

If you want to discover the true meaning of Christmas, visit the Live Nativity Scene at Brightwood Christian Church in Bethel Park. The Nativity Scene is a tradition at Brightwood Christian Church since 1985 and it is presented on the front lawn of the church. The Nativity Scene uses costumed members of the congregation, a barn stage, and live animals in a fenced-in area. This year it will be presented on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, December 21, 22 and 23, from 6 - 9 p.m. There will also be a hospitality table inside the church at Campbell Hall to welcome anyone who wants to come in from the cold to enjoy some hot coffee and cookies. Illumination Night at Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church will hold its annual Illumination Night on Saturday, December 14 starting at 5 p.m. Everyone’s favorite activities are returning, including the horse and carriage ride through the luminary-lighted streets, the trolley ride to see the many houses with beautiful Christmas decorations, along with hot cider and s’mores over an open fire. Performing this year will be the Brentwood High School chorus and jazz band along with Shade Sisters Dance Studio. Closing our performances this year will be a special performance by the CLO Mini Stars. Indoors there will be many activities for children. Kevin’s Pharmacy Leads Vial of Life Project to Help Save Lives Thomas Tritinger, co-pharmacist at Kevin’s Pharmacy in Castle Shannon, is leading an initiative to give South Hills communities access to a life-saving Vial of Life program. Tritinger offers oversized prescription vials that store a person’s key medical information, which are then kept in a home refrigerator. In a medical emergency, paramedics are trained to locate these vials, which immediately improves the speed and efficiency of the decision-making in potentially life-threatening situations. The vials are free and available to the public through the pharmacy. “The program concept is so simple, but people simply need to be aware of it. Anyone can take advantage of it for themselves and their loved ones. These vials really can save lives, and I encourage everyone to participate,” Tritinger commented. Tritinger continues to grow the program in the Pittsburgh Region by working with the American Red Cross of Southwestern Pennsylvania, along with area retirement homes, care centers, hospitals and municipal leaders. “The local Red Cross is committed to preparing individuals for potential emergencies. We are pleased to partner with Mr. Tritinger and his efforts in the community to put tools and resources into the hands of local residents,” said Lauren Ashley, spokesperson for the local Red Cross. “As part of its vital mission, the local Red Cross strives to educate all communities in Western Pennsylvania on the importance of being prepared.” With the goal of supplying the citizens of Pittsburgh with these life-saving vials, businesses, institutions, and community organizers interested in joining Tritinger can easily get involved. RMS Cross Country Boys Take 1st Place at Cal U Invitational On August 31, 2013, the Ringgold Middle School Boys’ Cross Country Team showed up, psyched and ready to run in the Cal U Invitational Meet. Coached by Sarah Scharding and Steve Spang, the group of 7th and 8th grade boys sprinted to victory and brought home the 1st place trophy for Ringgold. Throughout the run, they cheered each other on and every member of the team finished in the top 20, and each were awarded a special "Top 20 Finisher" jersey for their efforts. Of the top 20, Ringgold had half of its team in the top 10.

Tips On Winterizing Your Home And HVAC System (NAPS)—By winterizing your home, you can enjoy increased warmth and comfort and lower your heating costs and increase energy savings. HERE ARE SOME STEPS YOU CAN TAKE: • Caulk, patch or weather-strip any areas around windows and doors that might allow cold air in or warm air out. Your fireplace, too, is a source of heat loss, so close the damper. • Put storm windows in place. New, insulated glass windows can provide energy savings. However, if you cannot afford new windows, consider covering older windows with plastic sheeting. • Check insulation in your attic, ceilings, exterior and basement walls, floors and crawl spaces to see if it meets the levels (measured in R-values) recommended for your area. It’s also wise to insulate water heaters and pipes. • Replace or clean filters in your heating unit to improve airflow and efficiency. • Schedule an inspection of your system by a heating professional. Heat pumps and oil-fired furnaces need annual tune-ups; gas-fired equipment can be ser?viced every other year. Professional technicians are usually trained to detect leaks, soot, rust, rot, corroded electrical contacts and frayed wires. • Next, take advantage of a programmable thermostat and set the temperature lower when you’re away or sleeping. • Finally, if you need to replace your home heating unit, consider a new furnace or heat pump that meets standards for high efficiency, measured as annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) for furnaces and heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF) for heat pumps. The higher the AFUE or HSPF, the more efficient the unit and the more likely you are to save energy and money.
