Local Bridge to be Named in Honor of Monongahela Military Hero
South Park Women’s Club Holds 18th Annual Holiday Bazaar
State Rep. Peter J. Daley II, D-Fayette/Washington, said he is pleased that legislation he jointly sponsored to name a bridge after Carl E. Vuono unanimously passed the House and is on its way to the Senate. Daley worked with Rep. Rick Saccone, R-Allegheny, to honor a Monongahela native who retired from the U.S. Army as a four-star general and who served as chief of staff of the U.S. Army. “General Vuono had a distinguished and illustrious military career that will go down in the history books as exemplary,” Daley said. “Even as he rose through the ranks, he never forgot his roots in the Mon Valley.” The legislation (H.B. 1886) would designate the bridge that carries State Route 136 over the Monongahela River, connecting Forward Township to Monongahela as the General Carl E. Vuono Bridge. Vuono graduated from Monongahela High School and the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. He went on to serve three tours of duty in Vietnam. Vuono served as chief of staff to the U.S. Army and was mentor to former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Commanding Gen. David Petraeus. “For his military valor, he earned numerous medals including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star and the Army Distinguished Service Medal,” Daley said. The legislation moves to the Senate for consideration. Members of the South Park Women’s Club hosted their 18th Annual Holiday Bazaar on October 23. Carry-Out or Delivery • 7 Days a Week

On a beautiful, warm, sunny day, Sunday, October 23, the South Park Women’s Club held its 18th Annual Holiday Bazaar at the Home Economics Building in South Park. It was a busy afternoon with a crowd of shoppers looking for fall and holiday gifts and crafts. About 50 crafters offered their unique homemade wares, and about half of the vendors were new this year. SPWC also held raffles and a Chinese Auction, sold refreshments, and held a bake sale. The club’s mission is to provide assistance to township residents in need and provide scholarships to women and students within the township to enhance their education and personal growth. The annual craft show is their largest fund raiser and helps to support their objectives and mission. The South Park Women’s Club thanks all of those who helped to make the day such a success, including the crafters and the people who attended.
