The Great Fall Cleanup! Friends of South Park Sponsoring Community-wide Effort On October 26, 2013 the Friends will sponsor South Park’s Great Fall Cleanup, a day to pick up litter in the County Park from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM. Volunteers will meet in the park at the South Park Museum Building by the Clock Tower to get their assignments. Volunteers of all ages and abilities may participate. Children under adult supervision are welcome. All volunteers should wear clothing appropriate for the weather, and sturdy shoes. Work gloves and garbage bags will be provided. SHACOG Board Meeting Hosted by South Park Township The Township of South Park, hosted the August 22, 2013 SHACOG (South Hills Councils of Governments) meeting. South Hills Area Council of Governments or SHACOG, incorporated in 1973, is a voluntary organization of municipalities located primarily in the South Hills corridor of Allegheny county, Pennsylvania. SHACOG's purpose is to meet at regular intervals to discuss and study community challenges of mutual interest and concern. Members seek, by agreement, solutions to common problems for their collective benefit. SHACOG also coordinates and administers programs of regional interest that benefit member municipal governments. Municipalities in attendance - Whitehall, Baldwin, Bethel Park, Scott, Elizabeth, Mt. Oliver, Mt. Lebanon, Jefferson Hills, Pleasant Hills, Brentwood, and South Park.

Children’s Harvest Festival at OMH in South Park A Children’s Harvest Festival will be held at the Oliver Miller Homestead on Sunday, October 20, from 1:30 to 4:30 PM.There are many activities in store for the children, all of which reflect our pioneer heritage. The children may participate in old-fashioned games such as the corn cob toss and ducking for apples. They may try their hands at doing tin punching, churning butter, making church babies, writing with quill pens or sampling one of the many different corn crafts. Tussie mussies, fragrant bouquets of flowers and herbs, will be available for purchase. The Oliver Miller Associates will also have a number of demonstrations so that the children and their families can observe spinning, weaving, open-hearth cooking, and forge work.All outdoor events will be weather permitting. In case of rain, the buildings will be open for tours and demonstrations, but many of the hands-on crafts, which are done outdoors, may be cancelled. Get Physical, Get Heart Healthy Participate in the Mon Valley Heart Walk Heart disease is the number one killer in this country. Stroke ranks fourth and is the leading cause of severe disability. Cardiovascular disease affects more than one in every three adults. However, most people can take control of their heart health and reduce their risk. The first step is exercise! The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of moderate activity at least five days a week. Yet only 15 percent of American adults achieve that. Without regular physical activity, the body loses its ability to function well. In addition, for each hour of regular exercise, you can gain about two hours of additional life expectancy, even if you don't start exercising until middle age. Getting active doesn’t mean you have to sign up for the next marathon. Brisk walking is enough. Planning your week with exercise in mind is important. Schedule it on your calendar and treat it just as you would an important meeting. Getting active for 30 minutes is ideal, but if you’re having trouble finding a block of time, try splitting it up into three 10-minute or two 15-minute segments. Owners Jim and Nancy Cameron, along with staff member Meagan Slates, explained to the crowd that they turned the family farm into a place for “Agritainment” and “Ag education.” "In the spring of 2011, farm was transformed into a lavender, fresh cut flower, and berry farm as well as a seasonal event center hosting weddings, large outdoor parties and business or organization events," Nancy Cameron said. The WCFB's Legislative Farm Tour is held each year on a different farm, showcasing the diversity of the farms in the region. "The farm tours are important because it gives an opportunity for local and state legislators to learn about the various forms of farming - as well as the needs of the farmers - in our county," said WCFB member Denise Lewellyn.

Great Halloween Costume Swap at PT Library Over the Labor Day weekend, from August 29 through September 1, a team of nine bicycling enthusiasts rode from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., along the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Towpath biking trails to raise awareness and funds for the Arthritis Foundation. One of the riders, Jeff Krakoff of Upper St. Clair, decided to transform the initial idea of a long ride into a fundraiser called "ArthRIDEis". First diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 18 years ago, Jeff manages his arthritis with medication and regular exercise, including biking. “Biking has really been a help for me physically and also emotionally,” says Jeff, who trained for months with his group. Even as well prepared as Jeff was, he actually came very close to not completing the ride due to the pain. “There times when I had severe pain in my hands, wrists and knees, especially the last night before we rode from Harpers Ferry to Washington, D.C.” But Jeff was motivated to fight through the pain and complete the ride. “I hope our journey shows that people with arthritis can still participate in strenuous activity.” Other members of the group included Upper St. Clair residents Kurt Meissner, Vic Walczak, and Jon and Ellen Hart; Peters Township resident Pete Chiste; Bethel Park residents Craig and Laura Hoffman; and South Park resident Lori Heinecke. The ArthRIDEis campaign has received 103 donations and raised nearly $5,500 for the Arthritis Foundation. Train Enthusiasts - Mark Your Calendars! Model Train and Die-Cast Show is Back for a Third Year in a Row The third annual "Model Train and Die-Cast" Show is planned from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, on Sunday, November 24, at the Library Fire Company at 6851 Library Road (Route 88) in South Park. The Pittsburgh Independent Hi Railers will be in attendance with their 18-foot by 32-foot O-gauge layout for children and adults. There will be 150 vendor tables on display. In addition to model trains, and diecasts, custom made buildings and signs will also be for sale. Hot food and beverages will be provided by Cyd West and her Comfort Catering service. There will be great door prizes, and we will also be raffling off two model railroad train sets donated by Evey True Value Hardware in Bethel Park. Both raffles will go off between 2:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon. Winners need not be present. All proceeds from these raffles will go to the Boy Scouts of America. Admission cost for this popular event is just $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens (over 65), and $1 for children (under 12). Over 1,200 people attended each of the previous shows. A few vendor tables are still available at $15 each, while all vendors will receive a free gourmet buffet breakfast courtesy of Comfort Catering. Experience The Homestead at Twilight Come experience the atmosphere of the Oliver Miller Homestead at twilight as you wander the grounds of this fine old home at the end of the day. The homes, buildings, and grounds will be lit by candles and lanterns and the Miller family and their friends will be seen as they rest and prepare for the end of the day. For one Sunday only, November 3, the Homestead will be open from 4:30 until 7:30 PM. In November of 1794 the Miller family and their neighbors were deeply involved in the events of the Whiskey Rebellion. Some family members had fled and others were unsure of their fate. Soldiers were camped nearby and their plans were unknown. The gentlemen will be found around the fire at the fire pit as they discuss the politics of the day and wonder about what course they should follow. In the Stone House, the ladies will also discuss these events and will be doing stitchery, cooking, and sharing neighborhood news. On the porch of the Stone House, guests may purchase warm cider and cookies of the type appropriate to the Miller times. Other activities will allow guests to learn how to start a fire with a striker and flint and the making of balls for shooting. In addition, the forge will be open and working. The barn will be open and will hold displays relative to the Whiskey Rebellion. Docents in eighteenth century dress will discuss the times and answer questions from our visitors. The Oliver Miller Homestead, a historic landmark and Whiskey Rebellion site, is located on Stone Manse Drive, just off the Circle on Corrigan Drive. It is open every Sunday through December 8. The Myasthenia Gravis Association of Western PA invites all dog lovers to enjoy a fun day together at South Park on Sunday, October 27 for the "5th Annual Pooch Parade." This family-friendly event features a one mile fun walk on a paved trail beginning at the Dog Park at South Park. All registered participants will receive morning refreshments, a tote bag of goodies, a long-sleeve t-shirt, and a bandana for their dog. The event features a costume contest with prizes for best dog and best dog/owner combo costumes. There will be fabulous raffles of gift baskets and silent auctions, including Steeler tickets and a Myrtle Beach vacation. 2 Big Lender Concerns When obtaining a mortgage to finance the purchase of real estate, the borrower typically pays a non-refundable loan application fee of plus or minus $400. This fee is used to cover the costs associated with two very big lender concerns: credit reports and appraisals. The first lender concern is the credit worthiness of the buyer. You see the lender’s investor is asked to loan money to people they will never meet! Consider the fact that the source of all mortgage money is some form of somebody’s SAVINGS. Instead of investing in bonds, the stock market or putting

the money into CDs, the mortgagor invests in mortgages. The intent is to earn a profit, over time, in the form of monthly payments, sometimes lasting as long as 30 years. To decide whether or not to grant a loan to a particular borrower there are many things taken into account. Does the buyer hold a steady job? How long have they been there? Is their monthly income sufficient to make payments, maintain the property and live? Do they have enough money to close the sale? How many other debts do they have? What are the loan balances and monthly payments? Do they make payments in a timely fashion? What is their credit score? Are there any judgments or bankruptcies in their past? How do we verify what the buyer says is actually true? Ultimately, based on the information sources available to lenders today, does this buyer appear to be someone the lender can trust to repay the debt with interest plus handle all of the normal financial obligations associated with homeownership? The second lender concern is the value of the property. You may have

wondered about the need for an appraisal. If you are the buyer you know that the sellers and the real estate professionals obviously think it is priced correctly. After all, if the property was listed for sale on the open market, didn’t the market establish the purchase price? The answer is “not necessarily”. The reality is that whatever type of property someone wants to mortgage, an appraisal will be ordered by the lender, including refinancing or a home equity loan. Keep in mind that the lender is being asked to risk someone’s SAVINGS, in this case, on a property they will never actually see. Therefore, they need acceptable assurance that in the unlikely event the buyer defaults, there is sufficient value remaining in the property to be able to sell it for enough money to satisfy the debt. The appraisal will be ordered by the lender through a third party company so that there is no possible communication or undue influence between the lender and the mortgage company. The appraiser inspects the property then compares it to other properties in the area. The appraisal gives a lender an
unbiased professional opinion as to the property’s value. Another consideration is the fact that when you are the borrower, it is simply good to know that you are not overpaying for the property. It is important to remind everyone that an appraisal does not take the place of a general inspection. Appraisals are used to determine the estimated value of a property based on numerous factors. A general inspection is a detailed examination of the physical condition of a property. The secondary market, i.e. Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, USDA and the VA create “guidelines” that lenders follow in an attempt to balance procedures to protect both parties’ interests. We all want buyers to be able to continue to buy and lenders to be able to continue to lend safely.

GeoKinetics Holds a Seismic Testing Demonstration in Union Township

By invitation of the Union Township Board, GeoKinetics conducted a demonstration of the systems and procedures that will be used in the Seismic testing to be conducted throughout the area including Union Twp. The demonstration was held on Saturday, September 21. GeoKinetics set up the three Vibroseis machines (Thumper Trucks) about 100 feet from the township building with the three units in tandem just as they’ll be used in actual testing. The units were along the edge of Finleyville Elrama Rd. The sensors that collect data from the test were laid out through the parking area and up the hillside in back of the municipal garage. About 30 area residents witnessed the testing. The machines went through quite a few vibration cycles with the Twp. Engineer, Carl DeCais, taking readings from seismographs set up in the area. Carl will report back to the Union Twp. Board on his findings in order that the board can make a decision on whether or not to reduce the distance from structures from 150 feet as required in the Union Twp. are closer than 150 feet to the roadway. I was standing about 60 feet from the machines and what I felt was much milder than I expected. In fact, the vibrations were barely perceptible. The GeoKinetics personnel were monitoring the vibrations closely to be certain the demo test being conducted was at approximately the same level to be used in actual testing. The personnel from GeoKinetics explained what was going on during the testing and answered questions posed by those in attendance. The demonstration may alleviate the concerns of some residents who were present but the effects on homes built above abandoned shallow coal mines remains in question. The board may decide to restrict testing in these areas. The Twp. Engineer has been asked to identify vulnerable areas.

Regional Chamber to Host Marcellus Shale Discussion The Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce will host a luncheon event on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the Lombardi Conference Center at Monongahela Valley Hospital. Registration and networking begins at 11:30 AM and the event will conclude at 1:00 PM. The program will include a panel that will discuss the economies of Marcellus Shale and its supply chain. Joy Ruff from the Marcellus Shale Coalition will be among those on hand to take part in the discussion. This event is part of the “Shale Energy Series,” a cooperative effort among other Chambers of Commerce in the region including the MVRCC, The Washington County Chamber, the Pittsburgh North Chamber, the Pittsburgh Airport Area Chamber, and the South Hills Chamber of Commerce. Prior to the September meeting, 19 the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates gathered at Massafra Funeral Home and conducted the Two-Bell Services for Evo Renacci. At the meeting, XO Barry thanked all of these shipmates for their dedication to our departed sailors. The Shipmates received a letter from the Donora Smog Association inviting them to participate in a parade in Donora on October 29. Shipmate Marshall Lignian requested a short meeting of anyone interested in the School Flag program to be held immediately following the regular meeting. Eleven members stayed for this meeting and Marshall sent letters to 12 new schools that haven't been a part of the program. No responses have been received to date. The first presentation was held Sept. 18, at Madonna Catholic School. This program is mainly for the 5th grade students and any school administrator interested in having this program held at their school are requested to contact Marshall Lignian.

Pumpkin Patch Trolley Starts October 4 at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum Embrace the change of seasons and leap into fall with the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum’s annual Pumpkin Patch Trolley, which runs Friday through Sunday October 4-6, 11-13, 18-20, and 2527. At the event, visitors will take a ride on an antique trolley to the pumpkin patch where children get to select their pumpkin and then decorate it at our new Education & Events Room. Families can take a tour and see trolleys and enjoy other kids’ activities including complimentary refreshments and games for children. The event runs 10 AM to 5 PM each day with the last ride to the pumpkin patch at 4:15 PM. Pumpkin Patch admission also includes unlimited rides on multiple trolleys and tours of the Trib Total Media Trolley Display Building (which houses 30 trolleys from all over the region). Displays include the photographic exhibits “Streetcar Stories of Washington County” and “Streetcar Suburbs: Linking Neighborhoods, Building Communities” as well as an introductory film on the Trolley Era. Visitors can also shop in the Museum Store. Kids can also explore play trolley car 225 and enjoy the Thomas and Chuggington play tables. Village of Elrama Celebrates Community Day By Paul Chasko
Area residents who stopped by the Elrama Volunteer Fire Department Pavilions for Community Day on September 1 treated themselves to some great food and music. The afternoon started off with the Karl Lukitsch Polka band, Autobahn. Late afternoon featured Girlz in Black Hats and ended up with the Todd Jones band in the evening – what a great day for music in this small Mon River community. There were activities for kids and grown-ups alike – games of chance for the grown-ups and free games for the kids. There was home-made food for everyone to enjoy. The crowd grew larger as the day went on – a great day in the Village of Elrama.

Annual Craft Show to be Held by South Park Women’s Club The South Park Women’s Club will be hosting their 20th Annual Craft Show on Saturday, October 12 in the Home Economics Building at the South Park Fairgrounds. The show will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and admission is free. The show has over 40 skilled crafters who offer unique, handmade, specialty and gift items that promise a little something for everyone! Many in today’s hectic and fast paced society are finding healing through slowing down. Described by many students as “meditation in motion,” Tai Chi classes have been a popular offering at the Franciscan Spirit and Life Center, which recently announced their new schedule for the fall. Beginning on September 16, the Center will host Tai Chi classes on Monday evenings and Wednesday afternoons for both beginners and continuing students. Each class is taught by certified Tai Chi instructor and movement analyst Gurney Bolster, MA, DTR. Monday evening classes are offered from September 16 – November 25, 2013. Horror Realm Convention Held in Bethel Park By Megan Lewis
Bethel Park once again was the host city for the annual Horror Realm Convention, a tradition celebrated the third weekend of September. A unique celebration to the horror film genre which welcomes horror film celebrities, authors, and vendors of various sorts selling products. This year's event welcomed professional model maker, Anthony “Nino” Pittsburgh author Nelson W. Pyles showing off Balistrieri, who specializes in custom his new book "Demons, Dolls, & Milkshakes" designs. He was raffling off a 3-inch cube he could make into anything the winner wishes. He specializes in custom model designs from 3-inch, 2-inch, or diorama box style. Autographs were being signed by Nelson W. Pryles for his new book, “Demons, Dolls, & Milkshakes” recently published by Post Mortem Press. Also at the event was Autumn Cook, who was signing autographs and showing off her film, “The Profane Exhibit,” where she did all of the special effects prosthetic Heather Langenkamp, AKA Nancy makeup. Cook was a contestant on Thompson, appearance was sponsored by Scares That Care. Season 4 of the TV reality show "Face Off", where make-up artists compete for a grand prize of, $100,000. The highlight of this year's event was the appearance of Heather Langenkamp, who played the role of “Nancy Thompson” in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. Langenkamp's appearance was sponsored by, Scares that Care, a charity that helps injured and sick children. One way that Scares that Care raises funds is by collecting and selling horror memorabilia. They are a nonprofit organization that is run by volunteers, so 100% of items or money donated will reach a child in need. Floreffe will be the place to be on October 26, as a fall craft/vendor show will be held at the Floreffe Volunteer Fire station. The show will run from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Guests will also enjoy a 50/50 drawing and a Chinese silent auction. The show will run for 10 days and will feature local artists in any medium. Craft/Vendor Show in Jefferson Hills Set for November 2 Since returning in 2011 after a 10-year hiatus, the Mon Valley School Craft/Vendor Show has been a huge success! Last year's event expanded to over 100 craft/vendor tables, selling an array of handmade items and vendor products. The show included many one of a kind items. The show also included our fantastic Chinese auction table of over 85 baskets, a $2 admission fee entitled you to a chance of winning over 30 door prizes, plus food and refreshments were also for sale. On August 25, 2013, the Jefferson Memorial Park on Curry Hollow Road in Pleasant Hills held a Car Cruise and Ice Cream Social for the community. The event was a perfect way to enjoy a sunny summer afternoon by taking a walk down memory lane. More than 70 cars and trucks were on display, a sizable increase over last year’s first time for the event. Many of the over 200 participants enjoyed the car cruise and then paid their respects to deceased friends and relatives at the cemetery. One couple visited their two beloved dogs in the pet cemetery section.
“Dancing for a Cause” Event to Raise Funds for Child Abuse Prevention Stars will be out when local celebrities, hometown heroes and concerned citizens gather to raise funds to help fight child abuse. "Dancing for a Cause" will be held on Friday, October 25 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Southpointe, Canonsburg. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. offering food, entertainment and dancing with all proceeds from the event going to Watchful Shepherd USA and its mission to prevent child abuse. The main attraction for this event will be the dancing, which features celebrities teaming up with professional dance instructors from the Arthur Murray Dance Studio. “Dancing for a Cause” has the pizzazz of a floor show with the heart of a charity, necessary ingredients for a successful fundraiser. There will also be a special performance by “The Sparks”, Pittsburgh Power’s Professional Dance Team. Food will be served from 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. with the dance competition from 8:00 - 11:00 p.m. Music and entertainment will be provided by DJ Jiving Johnny. There is a need for silent auction and Chinese auction items. All donations are tax deductible. Individual tickets are $100 each and tickets at the door are $125. All proceeds from “Dancing for a Cause” will benefit Watchful Shepherd, a nonprofit child abuse prevention program. The Watchful Shepherd program provides families and child victims with wristbands that can activate an electronic device, which in turn activates a computer monitoring system at its National Response Center on a 24-hour-a-day basis. Elizabeth Borough Celebrates Their Role in the Lewis and Clark “Voyage of Discovery” By Paul Chasko and Charlotte Hopkins
Local history buffs had an opportunity recently to reach back in time and garner a feel for what it was like to be part of the Lewis and Clark “Journey of Discovery” that explored and mapped the Western wilderness for President Thomas Jefferson. The two–day Lewis and Clark Festival in Elizabeth, PA was held on August 23 and 24, and revolved around members of the reenactment group “The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles Missouri” whose members showed up from various locations across the country. Many of these re-enactors were wellqualified to speak about the journey as they had previously stepped into the shoes of the original participants by repeating portions of the long journey down the Ohio then up the Missouri in a keelboat, pirogue and, in the last leg of the Journey to the Pacific, in dugout canoes. This repeat trip began in 2003 and took 3 1/2 years to complete with stops at every point the original Lewis and Clark Expedition had stopped. Logs kept by Meriwether Lewis served as a guide for the repeat journey. Members of the organization felt obliged to gather at Elizabeth as it was the 10th anniversary of the repeat journey in which some of them participated. The Elizabeth connection, as most locals know, was the boat-yard of shipbuilder John Walker in Elizabeth who built the 55 foot long keelboat that

was used in the expedition. The pirogues and canoes were acquired by the expedition as their need was discovered later in the journey. The part of the journey across the Rocky Mountains was necessarily done on horseback. The re-enactors had use of a pirogue built to replicate the “White Pirogue” used in the original expedition. This was one of the pirogues used in their 2003 repeat of the journey. It was

docked just off Water Street in Elizabeth during the Festival. The re-enactors had their camp set up in the boat access area about 300 yards upriver from the pirogue where demonstrations of period muskets, rifles and other weaponry took place. There were also demonstrations of frontier medicine, American Indian life, frontier camping and period fire starting. The group took advantage of the Grand Theatre where Scott Mandrell and Col. Ed Scholl spoke to their audience on various portions of the journey both on Friday and Saturday. Attendees were also shown the films, "The Lewis and Clark Air Rifle," and "Lewis & Clark, Confluence of Time and Courage." Re-enactor John McNulty taught an excited group of parents and children about wooden rifles. Ed Falvo gave a lesson on frontier medicine and pre-
sented a replica of the medicine kit carried by Lewis & Clark. It included bottles of chocolate, peppermint oil, elderberry roots, gum camptor (similar to Vick's), bear grease, copperas, and Dr. Rush's pills - made up of Jalop Calomel (mercury) and bread elastic. Hunting enthusiast, Dave Kelly, sold purses, wallets, clips, and belts made from the fur of animals that he caught on his hunting trips. Kelly also has hats from skunks and raccoons, and among his snakeskin belts, is one from a rare Egyptian snake. American Indians held presentations that showed clothing, tools, and weapons, from the Lewis & Clark expedition. They also taught fire starting, played music, danced and showed the children how to shoot a bow & arrow. The night ended with songs and dance around a bonfire, and plenty of stories from the trail.

WCCF Kicks Off Annual Steelers Ticket Raffle The Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF) is raffling four Steelers tickets and limousine service to and from Heinz Field for the Sunday, November 17, 2013 game against the Detroit Lions. The game tickets, donated by the Observer-Reporter, are in section 535, row F (at the 50-yard line). Raffle tickets are $10 each. The winner will be determined by the first validated Pennsylvania Lottery number drawn at 7:00 PM on November 1, 2013. If the number drawn on this date is an unsold ticket, the winner will be determined by the next day’s 7 PM drawing until a winner is determined. Proceeds from the raffle benefit the WCCF’s Acorn Fund, which makes grants to local charities. To date, the Fund has awarded more than $500,000 in six funding areas: arts and humanities, education, environment and animal welfare, health and fitness, human needs, and religion and faith-based. Journey into Space with Washington Symphony Orchestra Outer space has held the mysteries that man has sought after for years. Journey there this October 12 without leaving your seat! The Washington Symphony Orchestra opens its 2013-14 season with “Space – The Final Frontier” on Saturday, October 12 at 8:00 PM at Trinity High School in Washington under the baton of conductor and music director Dr. Yugo Ikach. You’ll enjoy a premiere of a local composer’s music with accompanying video from the International Space Station. Dominic Carrola of Washington has written “Window Beyond Earth” for the WSO to debut at its opening concert. Winter Morning Pictures’ producer Ron Hankison collaborated with Carrola to put the International Space Station video with the piece. Besides the premiere of this music and video collaboration, the WSO’s audience will enjoy “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” as well as Holst’s The Planets. Music from the whimsical sci-fi fantasy series “Dr. Who” will showcase the unearthly sound of the theremin – an out of this world instrument. Concert-goers will also see an informational display on Joe Walker, a 1938 Trinity alumnus, 1942 Washington & Jefferson College alumnus, and Washington native who was one of the first men in outer space in the early 1960s. Three of his X-15 flights in 1963 exceeded 60 miles, entering "technical" outer space. As a result he logged a total of 32 minutes in space and was the first person to enter technical space twice. McGuffey School District has a Joe Walker Elementary School in honor of the local “astronaut.” Season tickets are still available for music fans who wish to enjoy all four regular WSO concerts at a $5 off each concert price, saving $20 per set of season tickets. PET GUIDE Pairing Kids And Pets To Promote Learning (NAPS)—A new educational program is building on children’s natural affinity for animals to encourage kids to be more calm, confident and caring. The program promotes the virtues of shelter pets—Mutt-i-grees®—and uses them to teach children social and emotional skills. Developed by North Shore Animal League America’s (NSALA) Pet Savers Foundation in collaboration with Yale University School of the 21st Century and funded by the Cesar Millan Foundation, the program is called the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum. Based on the emerging field of social and emotional learning, it is designed to help kids manage their emotions, get along with others, acquire empathy and compassion, and discover essential decision-making and teamwork skills. Recently, actress Renée Felice Smith loaned her time and talent to co-direct and film a Public Ser?vice Announcement (PSA) for the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum. Smith, who appears on the CBS series “NCIS: Los Angeles,” was joined by a cast made up of 35 pre-K, elementary, middle and high school student volunteers. In
addition to the human cast, the PSA features several Mutt-i-grees. The program is now in operation in over 2,000 schools nationwide and NSALA hopes that the PSA will bring the benefits of the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum to the attention of other school administrators. Bad Breath in Pets Could Be a Sign of Poor Health (StatePoint) It’s widely known that bad breath isn’t just unpleasant, but a sign of poor dental hygiene and potential dental problems. Community Meets Dr. Laurie Molinda During Recent Open House in Finleyville

The delivery person entered Dr. Laurie Molinda’s waiting room carrying a large wicker basket filled with colorful flowers, autumn plants and even a small pumpkin. The card read, “Best wishes for a long and profitable practice from three of your new patients.” The seasonal arrangement was an “office warming” gift from two sisters and the seeing-eye dog that accompanies them to their appointments with Dr. Molinda. Although she has only been in her new office in the Martik Plaza in Finleyville for a few months, Laurie Molinda, M.D. has already made a significant impression on the community. During the Sept. 19 Open House, there was a steady stream of current patients visiting along with their friends, relatives, and neighbors. The attendees also included people who had heard that there was a new doctor in the area who wanted to informally meet the physician and her office staff. During the Sept. 19 Open House, visitors had an opportunity to casually talk with Dr. Molinda and her staff, learn about the diagnostic tests offered right in the office, tour the exam rooms and even roll up their sleeves to receive flu vaccine. Dr. Molinda’s staff provided free blood pressure screenings and staff from Monongahela Valley Hospital offered pulmonary function screenings. Visitors also received individual demonstrations of the office’s express check-in kiosk which enables returning patients to securely register and make their co-payments with the touch of the screen or swipe of a card. Dr. Molinda is a board-certified internist with 25 years of experience. Inpatient care for her patients is delivered at Monongahela Valley Hospital which has been ranked among the top three medium-sized hospitals in the United States for patient satisfaction based on HCAHPS scores by the Johns Hopkins Medicine Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. Dr. Molinda’s journey to Finleyville began with her studies in Louisiana, Oxford, England and Virginia where she received her Medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. Prior to opening her new office, she was the Medical Director of Health Works of Canonsburg General Hospital. Finleyville Resident Completes Basic Training at West Point Cadet Samuel John Kainz, son of Ms. Tanya Kainz and Anthony Kainz of Finleyville, recently completed Cadet Basic Training at the U.S. Military Academy. Kainz entered West Point on July 1, 2013 and has successfully completed six weeks of CBT. CBT is one of the most challenging events a cadet will encounter over the course of their four years at the academy. The initial military training program provides cadets with basic skills to instill discipline, pride, cohesion, confidence and a high sense of duty to prepare them for entry into the Corps of Cadets. Areas of summer instruction included first aid, mountaineering, hand grenades, rifle marksmanship and nuclear, biological, and chemical training. Kainz began classes August 19. The West Point curriculum offers 37 majors balancing physical sciences and engineering with humanities and social sciences leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. Kainz graduated from Ringgold High School and plans to graduate from West Point in 2017 and be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Larry "Shorty" Leco of Union Township recently celebrated his 70th birthday in a big way. An all-afternoon party was held in the St. Francis of Assisi Pavilion in Finleyville. At any given moment it seemed as though most of the residents of Union Township were there. Steve Parish (Union Township Board of supervisors) and Larry Maggi (Washington County Commissioner) dropped by to pass on their best wishes. Larry has always been a resident of Union Township. He resides and cares for his farm on Garvin Road midway between Mingo Church Road and Little Mingo Creek Road. There was more good food there than could be consumed by a small army and of course a huge birthday cake. I think a good deal of the credit for the success of the celebration goes to his wife Annie, his brother Mike and their kids, Michelle and Gerry. Larry remains quietly active in Union Township politics, has been an avid skier all his life, is a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church and is active in Union Township’s Neighbor to Neighbor Community Watch Group. I’m remotely related to Larry and have fond memories of visiting the Leco farm on several occasions – once to pick apples and to press homemade cider.
Jefferson Hills Resident Earns Spot in National Pageant Brianna Nicole Sobeck, daughter of Lisa and Joseph, of Jefferson Hills, has earned the opportunity to attend Nationals as 3rd runner-up 2013 Miss Pennsylvania Jr-Pre Teen during the State competition of the National American Miss Pageant. Brianna, age 8, is in the 3rd Grade at McClellan Elementary. Brianna's additional awards include a state finalist trophy, the Spirit of America trophy and the National American Miss Portfolio Award. She will be representing her community as "Miss Jefferson Hills" with her very own crown and sash in November. She's an all American girl with all American girl dreams!

The hallways at Madonna Catholic Regional School are once again full of energy as students and teachers arrived for the start of a new school year. The Madonna Catholic Regional School serves the families residing in the small communities of the entire Mid-Mon Valley area. Madonna Catholic was established in 1998 and is subsidized by the parishes of Our Lady of the Valley in Donora, Transfiguration and St. Anthony in Monongahela, and Mary, Mother of the Church in Charleroi. MCRS continues to thrive and offers a variety of programs for students in Preschool through Grade Eight based on a curriculum established by the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the State of Pennsylvania.

"Praise and Worship in the Park" Held in Monongahela

You didn't have to go any further than Chess Park in Monongahela on August 9 - 10 to enjoy some fine Christian music performances, rub elbows with some great folks from the valley and enjoy some great food. The “Praise and Worship in the Park” has become an annual event held in Chess Park in Monongahela. It is a summer event enjoyed by Christians and non-Christians, young and old from, throughout the upper Mon Valley and beyond. The celebration spanned the weekend of Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10 and featured some great professional groups featuring Christian music and vocals. On Saturday there were booths featuring a variety of great food, crafts and games prepared and featured by local church groups. For the kids there was face painting, a climbing wall and a variety of other games. Although many local churches had fundraising booths, the event was sponsored by the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Monongahela. This event, starting from very modest beginnings, has become a somewhat more professional and entertaining event highlighting the message of Christianity throughout the Mon Valley. If you weren’t there, you missed a great event - don’t miss it next summer.

Additional Vaccine Offers Added Protection This Flu Season Trivalent and Quadrivalent Flu Vaccine Available at Dr. Molinda’s Office “I recommend that all of my patients at high risk for the flu to be vaccinated on a yearly basis,” said Laurie S. Molinda, M.D., a doctor of internal medicine. “Vaccination helps to prevent hospitalization due to complications, such as pneumonia, as well as to prevent children from missing school, parents from missing work, and the spread of the virus to older or immunecompromised patients that could become seriously ill if infected." According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaccination is the single best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against the flu. They recommend everyone ages 6 months and older should get the annual flu vaccine. It takes approximately two weeks after vaccination for your body to develop an immune response. By getting the vaccination early, you will be protected all season long. Flu viruses are constantly changing, and different flu viruses circulate and cause illness each season. The annual flu vaccine is updated each year to protect against the flu viruses that research indicates will be most common. This is why everyone needs a flu vaccine every year. Vaccination is especially important for people who are at high risk for complications from flu, and for people who live with or care for someone who is at high risk. Some of those people include the following: • Pregnant women • Children younger than 5, but especially children younger than 2 years old • People 50 years of age and older • People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions, such as chronic respiratory (such as asthma), cardiovascular disease (except hypertension), or kidney, liver, neurologic, hematologic, or metabolic disorders (such as diabetes mellitus); • People who are immunosuppressed • People who are or will be pregnant during the influenza season • Children who are 6 months through 18 years old and are on long-

term aspirin therapy • People who are morbidly obese • People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities • People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu, including: • Health care workers • Household contacts of persons at high risk for complications from the flu • Household contacts and out of home caregivers of children less than 6 months of age (these children are too young to be vaccinated) Two flu vaccines are available this year. The traditional trivalent vaccine is made to protect against three different flu viruses as well as the quadrivalent vaccine that is made to protect against four different flu viruses. Dr. Molinda will have both flu vaccines available in her Finleyville office. “The quadrivalent vaccine may prove more popular for children than their parents since youngsters tend to catch the newly added strain of influenza more often,” explained Dr. Molinda. “The four-in-one vaccine is so new that it makes up only a fraction of the nation’s supply of vaccine. It’s important to get a flu vaccine every year, even if you got vaccinated the season before and the viruses in the vaccine have not changed for the current season.
What should I do to prepare for this flu season?
Why did I develop the flu after I received a flu shot?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine is designed to protect against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season. Getting the flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available each year is always a good idea, and the protection you get from vaccination will last throughout the flu season. In addition, you can take everyday preventive steps like staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home.
How effective is the flu vaccine? Inactivated influenza vaccine effectiveness can vary from year to year and among different age and risk groups.
How long does a flu vaccine protect me from getting the flu? Studies conducted over different seasons and across vaccine types and influenza virus subtypes have shown that the body’s immunity to influenza viruses (acquired either through natural infection or vaccination) declines over time. The decline in antibodies is influenced by several factors, including the antigen used in the vaccine, age of the person, and the person's general health. When most healthy people with regular immune systems are vaccinated, their bodies produce antibodies and they are protected throughout the flu season, even as antibody levels decline over time. People with weakened immune systems may not generate the same amount of antibodies after vaccination; further, their antibody levels may drop more quickly when compared to healthy people.
You may have been exposed to a nonflu virus before or after you got vaccinated. The flu vaccine can only prevent illnesses caused by flu viruses. It cannot protect against non-flu viruses. Or you might have been exposed to flu after you got vaccinated but before the vaccine took effect. It takes about two weeks after you receive the vaccine for your body to build protection against the flu. You may have been exposed to an influenza virus that was very different from the viruses included in that year’s vaccine. The flu vaccine protects against the three influenza viruses that research indicates will cause the most disease during the upcoming season, but there can be other flu viruses.
Do healthy people need a flu shot? Anyone can become sick with the flu and experience serious complications. Older people, young children, pregnant women and people with medical conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disease are at especially high risk from the flu, but children, teens and adults who are active and healthy also can get the flu and become very ill from it. Flu viruses are unpredictable, and every season puts you at risk. Besides, you might be around someone who’s at high risk from the flu such as a baby, your grandparents, or even a friend.
Will the flu shot hurt? The very minor pain of a flu shot is nothing compared to the suffering that can be caused by the flu. The flu can make you very sick for several days; send you to the hospital, or worse. Whatever little discomfort you feel from the minor side effects of the flu vaccine is worthwhile to avoid the flu. Free Program Offers Information on Breast Cancer Screenings, Mammograms Monongahela Valley Hospital’s physicians and staff are doing their part to help women of all ages during Breast Cancer Awareness month in October. MVH and its Regional Cancer Center will present a free Breast Cancer Education and Screening Luncheon on Wednesday, October 30, at 1 PM in the hospital’s Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center. The event is free to all women who register and will feature a light lunch, two guest speakers, information regarding early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer as well as optional breast examinations. The presentations will be given by Natalie Furgiuele, M.D., a breast surgeon at MVH, and Mohsen Isaac, M.D., director of Radiation Oncology at MVH.

In addition to the physicians, radiology technologists from MVH will discuss breast cancer facts, techniques of performing breast self-examinations, and the importance of mammograms and mammography resources. Following the optional physical breast exams by members of the hospital’s medical staff, a mammogram will be scheduled for any woman who has an abnormal finding during the screening. Routine yearly mammograms may also be scheduled for women who have a family history of breast cancer, who fall into a high-risk category, and who have never had a baseline mammogram or who meet the recommended age guidelines. Home & Garden How To Know When It’s Time To Rebuild (NAPS)—Having a new home at an old address can be a better idea than many people realize. A first decision is whether to remodel your home or to rebuild on the old site. There are a few things to consider: • First, is the old house worth saving or will you be investing tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars you’ll never be able to recoup? According to Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, Americans spend $125 million a year on home renovation projects. • How much do you have to invest? If it’s a major remodel, it’s important to look at the housing market. Are there few houses on the market? If so, your home may sell quickly and make up the initial investment easily. If the housing market is weak, however, your home
may linger on the market for months. • Consider the condition of your home. If it has good wiring and heating and a sound foundation and tight building envelope, these factors strongly favor a remodel. If there is extensive mold, dry rot, asbestos, pest, water or other damage, tearing down and rebuilding may be a better investment. • How green is your residence or home? Older homes tend to be inefficient. They may have little to no insulation, single-pane leaking windows, old inefficient appliances and poor ventilation. Modern materials allow for much more energy-efficient heating and cooling. If it’s time to rebuild, you may consider building a green home. A new home can have modern multipane windows that cut down on heating bills
thanks to their high level of efficiency. In addition, radiant floor heating is a much more efficient and green option than forced-air heat, which is standard in older homes. Rebuilding allows for easy integration of green features. That can lead to the house being certified as a green home through such national programs as Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED). This program looks at water efficiency, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, energy and atmosphere and sustainable sites. Since green homes use building materials that strive to be toxin-free, there will be fewer issues with internal environmental air quality, including mold and mildew, which can be a problem in older homes
• There’s also the cost of maintenance to consider when it comes to an older home. On average, a 50-year-old home—and 29 percent of U.S. homes are 40 to 70 years old—of 2,500 square feet costs $19,000 in maintenance per year, whereas newly built homes require no maintenance. Once the decision to rebuild is made, the next question is often where to find a builder. Hard Water: Bad for Your Home and Wallet (BPT) - Hard water on its own is bad enough, making it difficult to wash clothes and dishes and leaving scaling on your pipes and showerheads as well as nasty brown rings in your sinks and toilets. However, it is also costing you money. Research by the Battelle Institute found that with hard water, showerheads lost 75 percent of their flow rate in less than 18 simulated months and could not maintain the required flow rate because of scaling. Water heaters are also negatively affected by hard water. When using softened water, researchers found that all the water heaters tested maintained 100 percent efficiency over a simulated 15-year lifetime, but with hard water, the gas and electric heater efficiency dropped by 25 percent - an incredible loss in energy resulting in significantly higher costs. In the case of the new instant tankless water heaters, hard water caused them to completely fail to function because of plugged-up scale, or mineral build-up associated with hard water, after only 1.6 years of simulated use - about a tenth the normal life of the appliance. Another study conducted for the Water Quality Research Foundation assessed the impact of water hardness on automatic dishwashers. Soft water was up to 12 times more effective at cleaning dishes than increasing the amount of detergent used. You can take steps to eliminate the source of the scaling with a salt-based water softener. In order to make hard water into soft water, you have to remove the calcium and magnesium. The only way to do that effectively is with a salt-regenerated water softener. Do-it-yourself water testing kits are available at most hardware stores, or you can have a water treatment professional do the testing. Eliminating hard water minerals delivers significant benefits in terms of the efficiency and maintenance cost of appliances and plumbing. Seniors for Safe Driving Upcoming Events Seniors for Safe Driving presents highway safety education programs for Seniors 55 years of age and older. The highway safety programs are certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The successful completion of the program makes seniors eligible for a 5 percent discount on their automobile insurance premiums, across the board, for a period of three years. December Bus Trip - Nemacolin Woodlands and the Lady Luck Casino Peters Township Parks and Recreation is offering a bus trip to Nemacolin Woodlands and the Lady Luck Casino on December 4.
