24th Annual St. Thomas More Arts/Crafts Fair Set for October 5 The 24th Annual St. Thomas More Arts/Crafts Fair will take place October 5 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The event will take place on the church grounds in Bethel Park, across from South Hills Village. Over 55 vendors offering a wide variety of art including jewelry, wood, holiday items, and homemade candy just in time for Halloween. Beauty Runs in the Family!

New Eagle Aunt and Niece Win in Pageantry Tiffany Forlai of New Eagle and her niece, Candace Schnore, were both crowned Grand Supreme at the Heavenly Angels and Storybook Pageant held in June at the Holiday Inn in Moon Township. Candace also received an award for overall most beautiful for facial beauty ages 5-10. She won jungle wear in her 10-11 year-old age division. Tiffany also won photogenic, jungle wear, and overall grand composite.

In Harrisburg on July 6 Tiffany was also crowned Pro-Supreme in the National America's Best Theme Pageant. Tiffany is a pharmaceutical sales rep for Forest Pharmaceuticals. Candace, daughter of Chad Forlai of New Eagle and Stephanie Schnore, will attends 5th grade at Ringgold Elementary School North. She is a Ringgold Rams cheerleader.

South Park “Friends” Fall Book Sale Coming Soon

Enjoy a Fall Hayride at Area County Parks

Mark your calendars as The Friends of South Park Township Library put their finishing touches on their Annual Fall Book Sale that will be held at the South Park Township Community Center. The book sale will run October 17 - 19. Times are as follows: Thursday, October 17 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, October 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, the ever-popular “$5.00-A-Bag-Day” from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m..

Your donations are always deeply appreciated and once again Friends ask members, Library patrons, Township residents and our surrounding neighbors for help in collecting books and miscellaneous items to once again achieve another successful sale.

All items can be brought to the South Park Library beginning Monday, September 30th. Until this date please keep donations boxed and in a clean dry area in order that they will be in good saleable condition.

Items needed: All books (hardback, paperback, fiction, non-fiction, children, adult, school, educational, coffee table); old records, albums, books on tape, audio music tapes, CD’s, DVD’s, video tapes, video games, computer and electronic games and programs, games, puzzles, toys and stuffed animals. Games, puzzles and toys should contain all parts and pieces and placed in taped up boxes.

Friends do not accept, small Reader’s Digests, National Geographics, jewelry or flea market/garage sale items. Computer books, programs, discs, business or tax publications, manuals and directories should be no older than 1 year. These items can be recycled from your home on recyclable days or dropped off at your local recyclable bins. Encyclopedia Sets, no matter what the age, are no longer being accepted for the sales. All proceeds for the Friends book sale benefits the South Park Township Library.

The Washington County Department of Parks & Recreation will be offering group hayrides this fall in Cross Creek County Park and Mingo Creek County Park. Hayrides arc approximately 50 minutes in length, and the haywagon can accommodate approximately 25 people per hour. The use of a picnic shelter and a fire circle for two hours before or after the scheduled hayride is also provided. The cost is $50 per hayride. Hayrides book quickly. Call the Washington County Parks & Recreation Office at 724-228-6867 for available times and information about scheduling a hayride. Be sure to indicate if your reservation is for Cross Creek County Park or Mingo Creek County Park.

Revolutionary War Encampment at OMH in South Park The Oliver Miller Homestead invites you to the Revolutionary War Encampment on Saturday and Sunday September 14 and 15 from 1:30 4:30 p.m. The Eighth Pennsylvania Regiment will camp on the grounds, depicting the day to day life of the American soldier. Soldiers will be recruited and taught to drill. Display of firearms and weaponry. The Oliver Miller Homestead is located on Stone Manse Drive off the circle on Corrigan Dr. in South Park. 4-H and FFA Scholarships Presented at Washington County Fair

The annual Washington County 4-H and FFA Scholarship awards were presented during the 4-H Livestock Sale on Saturday, July 17 at the 2013 Washington County Agricultural Fair. Upon completion of their first year of higher level education, winners receive a $2,000 scholarship to help with educational expenses.

Benefit for Madi Wasco on September 25 10-year Old South Park Cheerleader Battling Cancer Madison "Madi" Wasco is a beautiful 10 year old girl from South Park. She loves playing with her friends, listening to her favorite songs from One Direction, and cheerleading. Life was fairly normal for Madi and her family until early July 2013, when an ordinary visit to the emergency room resulted in doctors discovering a cancerous tumor on her kidney.

Madi is currently undergoing chemotherapy and an attempt will be made in the near future to remove the tumor. Madi and her Madison "Madi" Wasco mother are surrounded by love and strength through "Madi's Army", a group of family and friends pulling together to help Madi and her family.

The road ahead is long for Madi and her family. She will continue with chemotherapy and then begin radiation once her surgery is complete. Due to her illness, Madi is unable to go to school with her classmates and friends, and is being home-schooled.

A fundraiser is being held on Wednesday, September 25 at the South Park Clubhouse to help the family cover costs related to her home-schooling and medical expenses. The event will be from 5:00PM - 10:00PM, and will include live bands, a chinese auction, 50/50 drawing, donation jars and more. Plus - 10% of all food and drink sales will go to benefit Madi and her family.

“SCAREMARE” in Monongahela Attraction to be Held at the Old Monongahela Valley Trust Bank Building The Teen Quest annual “Scaremare”, sponsored by Slagle Roofing, is a unique production that will take place at the old Monongahela Valley Trust building in the heart of Mon City. The old bank will be transformed into a dramatic, thrilling production, guiding folks through the building of “crazy people” every Friday and Saturday throughout the month of October and also on one Wednesday, October 23. MARC Annual Community Meeting September 16 The Monongahela Area Revitalization Committee (MARC) will hold its 7th Annual Community Meeting on Monday, September 16. The event, which begins at 7:00 p.m., will be held at the Monongahela Fire Department Social Hall, 449 West Main St. and is open to the public.

MARC representatives (l-r) Don Miller, This year's topic is Mary Acton, and Bob Acton "Ringgold School District: Commitment to Excellence." The school district will be represented by school board president, Mrs. Mariann Bulko and school superintendent, Dr. Karen Polkabla.

Recognizing a viable school district needs the support of an adequate tax base.

The presenters will focus on the school district serving as a magnet to attract young families into the community. This requires an excellent faculty supported by excellent services and facilities.

The meeting will conclude with questions and answers moderated by Mr. Anthony Lombardi, President and CEO emeritus of Monongahela Valley Hospital.

Fall “Fleatique on the Mon” Saturday – October 12, 2013 Artisans, crafters, flea market, antique and food vendors are needed for the Fall “Fleatique on the Mon.” This fabulous event will be held in Chess Park, and throughout Monongahela and New Eagle on Saturday, October 12 from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Crafter and antique dealers will be featured in Chess Park, while flea market vendors and information booths will be located on Second Street. Food Vendors are need at both locations.Application deadline for vendors is September 28. Booth spaces for antique, craft and flea market vendors are 15” for $25. Food vendor spaces are 20”.

This unique event is known as the largest street sale in Southwestern Pennsylvania! “Haunted Trail” Volunteers Needed Volunteers are needed to help out with the “Haunted Trail” in Peters Township. Individuals are welcome or it can be fun if you have a group of friends, family, volunteer groups or belong to an organization. • Scene Actors – Act out a scene on the trail.

Mingo "G.I.F.T. Shop" Opening for the Holidays During the upcoming holiday season, parents in the Ringgold community that may need assistance in purchasing toys for their children will have an opportunity to shop at the Mingo G.I.F.T. Shop. G.I.F.T. stands for Grace, Integrity, Faith and Trust. Parents will earn shopping credits just by registering their children. More credits can be earned by volunteering at the Shop. The Shop is being organized by two Ringgold students in conjunction with the Mingo Creek Presbyterian Church Mission Committee. Senior Becca Podrosky is doing the project for her Girl Scout Gold Award, and this is the senior project for sophomore Allison Martin.

Monongahela Class of ‘58 Reunion to Span Three Days The Monongahela High School Class of 1958 will celebrate its 55-year reunion this Fall. The festivities will run October 5, 6 and 7 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel near South Hills Village shopping mall in Mount Lebanon. An informal gathering will highlight Saturday’s activities in the MHS hospitality room (821). It will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will feature free refreshments, snacks and pizza. ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ Auditions Set for September 7 at Cal U California University’s Department of Theatre and Dance, along with Mon Valley Dance Council, will audition performers for roles in the Cal U’s upcoming holiday production of “Miracle on 34th Street.” Based on the 20th Century Fox film, the musical will be directed by Dr. Michele A. Pagen, a professor in Cal U’s Department of Theatre and Dance, with choreography

by Maria Gismondi.

Auditions will be held September 7 in Steele Hall. Male and female performers of all ages and abilities will be considered for acting, singing and dancing roles. Participants should dress appropriately and bring their own shoes.

Auditioners should report to the Blaney Lobby entrance at the rear of Steele Hall 30 minutes before their scheduled audition times.

Performers auditioning for actor/singer/dancer roles should prepare a selection from musical theatre between 16 and 32 bars in length and arrive ready to dance.

Auditions are scheduled as follows: • Dancers only, ages 6-adult, 10 a.m. to noon: Dancers also may be considered for the ensemble, and they should plan to attend the appropriate ensemble audition as well. Strong dancers are needed for the parade scene; no singing or acting is required for these roles.

• Susan, 10 a.m. to noon: This char-

Annual Band Festival in Peters Township Music will fill the autumn night air as the Peters Township Mighty Indian Marching Band hosts its annual band festival on Saturday, September 21 at 7 p.m. at the Peters Township High School stadium, 264 East McMurray Road.

High School marching bands performing this year include Bethel Park, Canonsburg-McMillan, Chartiers-Houston, North Hills, West Greene and the Peters Township Mighty Indian Marching Band.

The Peters High School choirs will open the band festival with vocal selections. The Thiel College Tomcat Marching Pride from Greenville, Pennsylvania is the featured college band. Tickets will be sold at the gate the evening of the band festival and concessions will be available.

NEWS FROM THE MONONGAHELA AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Monongahela Historical society functions today as a monthly meeting organization which has become a strong voice in the community on such issues as: historic preservation, community development, and participating with other organizations to enhance the quality of life in our town. The society also maintains a museum located at 230 West Main Street where members have been working diligently all summer archiving the contents in the computer. One of its goals is to provide a place where people can do research by accessing information more easily. The society is always interested in accepting materials dealing with Monongahela such as photos with accompanied identification, artifacts pertaining to Monongahela , books, mementos, and information on family genealogies. The Elizabeth Borough Fire Department recently hosted their annual "Riverfest" event, a yearly activity that the residents of Elizabeth and neighboring communities anxiously look forward to all summer. The event featured a variety of food booths that featured walking tacos, fried Oreos, corn dogs and more! At the Petscapes booth, every child was a winner of either a snail, frog, or hermit crab! Operation Double Duty was developed to help a set of Finleyville twin brothers serving our country.

2nd Lieutenant Ian Mathies who is in the US Army, is stationed in Afghanistan and Airman First Class Dean Mathies who is in the US Air Force, is stationed in Japan. Both of them will be in their locations until April of 2014. The twins were born January 28, 1990 making them 23 years of age. Items are being collected that will remind them of home and help them gain a sense of comfort in a not so comfortable situation.

The goal is to send at least 2 care packages a month to each soldier. One "hygiene" package and one "food" package. These items cannot be sent in the same box. Each package will take 6 to 8 business days to get to Dean and Ian. Any of the listed items below as well as monetary donations would help to cover the cost of shipping. If you are able to contribute, please pick a month/months that you would like to donate. A detailed sheet of donations and donors will be included with each package so that Dean and Ian know how much they are appreciated.

Some reminders: if you are a church or putting a collection box out for a full month: the packages would not get to Dean and Ian until the following

month. (For example, if you would want to collect for Christmas, you would have to collect in November.)

Expiration dates are also very important for any product being donated.

Kortz: Restored Bus Route is a Great Start

State Rep. Bill Kortz, D-Allegheny, wants to let the community know that the Port Authority will resume bus service for the Mon Valley on September 1.

Daily service on the new 55 Glassport route will connect the Century Square and the North Versailles Wal-Mart with hourly runs through the day.

Stops along the route will include the West Mifflin Wal-Mart, Southland Shopping Center, Community College of Allegheny County's South Campus, Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Clairton, Glassport, McKeesport and the Port Authority's Transportation Center, UPMC McKeesport, Port Perry and the Great Valley Shopping Center.

According to the posted schedule, daily service begins at 5:32 a.m. at Gabriel Brothers at Century Square and continues every hour until 10:32 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and at 9:32 p.m. on Sunday.

Buses leaving from the North Versailles Wal-Mart begin their hourly service at 7 a.m. daily through 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 p.m. Sunday.

River of the Year Paddling Series

Harmony Singers Launch New Season

Scenic trip from Charleroi to Monongahela Join the River Town Program, a project of Pennsylvania Environmental Council, on September 7 for a one-day paddling trip on the scenic Monongahela River from Charleroi to Monongahela. The trip, approximately 9 miles, will include a welcome from local leaders and educational presentation at lunch. Registration is required.

This trip is open to all experience levels, but participants should be physically fit enough to paddle for 3-4 hours with a lunch break half way.

Agenda: 8:15 - 9:30 a.m. - Check-in at Monongahela Aquatorium; shuttle to North Charleroi launch.

The Harmony Singers of Pittsburgh, a South Hills choral group, will launch its 2013-2014 season on Wednesday, September 4 at 7:30 p.m. with an ice cream social for returning and prospective members. Kortz Congratulates Pleasant Hills on 20th Annual National Night Out

Congratulations are in order to the Pleasant Hills Community on another fantastic National Night Out. Special recognition is in order for three deserving and distinguished community Leaders retiring this year.

Chief Ed Cunningham and his police force put in extra hours every year to promote safety and respect in the Borough. The night reminds us of the bravery and dedication of law enforcement, and teaches our children that police officers are to be respected and trusted. Chief Cunningham is an excellent example for our young people. His commitment to the community as police chief will be sorely missed.

Mayor Warren Bourgeois has been a fixture in Pleasant Hills and at the parade for as long as anyone can remember. He always does an excellent job representing the community and working with other groups to make the night a huge success.

Although he won’t be at the parades as mayor any longer, his mark will be forever left on this night.

Lt. Richard Kelly is the man who builds the National Night Out from the ground up. He is the unsung hero of this event, and I know the entire Pleasant Hills community counts themselves lucky to have Lt. Kelly working behind the scenes every year to bring the community together in such a fantastic way. It was also a special evening

for Lt. Kelly as he was recognized by Senator Matt Smith and myself with recognition citations for his 35 years of loyal and dedicated service.

There are many others who work very hard each year, including Pleasant Hills Volunteer Fire Company, Pleasant Hills public works, Baldwin EMS, and American Legion Post 712. The Police and Fire Department have such an outstanding relationship with the community, and It’s wonderful to see so many “Thank You” signs along with the Stars and Stripes displayed for the Emergency Service personnel.

While the parade was fantastic, it was important to note that National Night Out is more than just a parade; it draws attention to the importance of the communities’ involvement in crime prevention programs and the monumental impact citizen participation can have on reducing crime in the borough. Only through this cooperation and mutual respect can a community stay as strong as Pleasant Hills.

This event marked my eighth year as a participant in the parade. I’m always amazed at the amount of people celebrating with their children, families, and neighbors. Pleasant Hills is a great community to live, work, and raise a family in, and National Night Out is the best example of that. I’m honored to represent this and all my communities in Harrisburg. Again, to all involved and especially our three retirees, my warmest thanks and congratulations.

South Park Women's Club Announces Upcoming Events The South Park Women's Club is starting off its new year with something new, different, and exciting. The agenda for our September meeting is "Share Your Harvest Exchange". Bring your fresh fruit, vegetables, and flowers to the meeting on Monday, September 16 at 7:00PM at the South Park Community Center. Come join us for desert, 50/50 raffle, fun, and the making of new friends.

The club is also sponsoring a fundraiser event on Wednesday, September 4 from 6:00 to 8:00PM at Rita's Ice on Library Road in Bethel Park. It promises to be lots of fun and to have many surprises. It is a great opportunity to help community families and individuals by purchasing Rita's Ice during the allotted time.

We will also have a table set up at Community Day in South Park Fairgrounds on Saturday, September 21 from 9:00AM – 4:00PM located in the Clock Building. At this time you can purchase your Pittsburgh Penguins raffle tickets and find out about all the good our Club does in our Community.

The Club will also be hosting their 20th Annual Craft Show on Saturday, October 12 in the Home Economics Building at the South Park Fairgrounds from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The show features 40+ skilled crafters, a Chinese Auction, raffles, a bake sale and refreshments. Admission is free. Stay for lunch. This is the perfect time to purchase unique, handmade, specialty gift items, possibly early Christmas presents.

September Meeting of the South Hills Friends of the Montour Trail The South Hills Friends of the Montour Trail September 2013 meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on September 10 at the South Park Community Room located behind the Township Building at 2675 Brownsville Road, South Park. Brownlee Covered Bridge Offering Live Performances and Events at Festival Come join us at the Washington and Greene Counties Covered Bridge Festival at The Brownlee Covered Bridge McGuffey Community Park, Beham Ridge Rd. of Rte 231S, in Claysville, on September 21 and 22.

Day Of Giving “WCCF Gives” Day Goal Set at $500,000 Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF) announced that it has set a fundraising goal of $500,000 for “WCCF Gives”, its community-wide day of giving on September 10.

During this 12-hour event, which runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., the WCCF will enhance contributions made to participating charities via www.wccfgives.org by a percentage of a $100,000 match pool. The match pool will be distributed on a pro rata basis, so the more money designated by donors to a specific charity, the greater the amount that charity will receive from the match pool. All contributions received through WCCF Gives, including the match pool, will be awarded to the charities as unrestricted grants. The match pool sponsors include Washington Financial Bank, Chapman Corporation, Alex Paris Contracting, ObserverReporter, rose plastic, Toyota of Washington, anonymous Foundation contributors, and a grant from the Benedum Foundation.

There are more than 100 local charities from all across Washington County registered to participate in the day of giving, and the mix of charitable causes is very diverse. All WCCF Gives participants are registered 501(c)(3) charities with a physical presence in Washington County, and all have agreed to use the money raised through WCCF Gives for charitable purposes in Washington County.

Qualifying WCCF Gives day donations must be made using either MasterCard or Visa through www.wccfgives.org. The minimum gift is $25 but donors are welcome to give as much, and to as many charities as they would like, during the event. Donors wishing to make particularly generous gifts are encouraged to contact their credit card companies prior to making their contributions on September 10. In an effort to enable charities of all sizes to benefit from the match pool, the maximum amount a donor may give to a single charity and be eligible for the match pool is $10,000 per donor, per charity. There is no limit to what each charity may receive.

The WCCF is not charging any fees to facilitate WCCF Gives and will provide to each charity a list of its donors, unless the donor has requested anonymity. Early in October, each charity will receive one check from the Foundation, for the total of its contributions, plus its share of the match pool.

Throughout the day on September 10, the WCCF will post progress reports on its website, Facebook, and Twitter. Real-time information will be available at www.wccfgives.org, so that community members and charities will be able to track the incoming contributions.

September 11th Remembrance Ceremony in South Park The South Park Township Board of Supervisors, in conjunction with Windover Hills United Methodist Church, is again sponsoring a September 11th Remembrance Ceremony that will be held - rain or shine - on Wednesday, September 11 at 6:30 p.m.

The informal gathering will take place at Sunny Slope located in the Allegheny County Park. The tribute will recognize the members of the departments who are the first to respond to any emergency in South Park Township: the South Park Township Police Department, Broughton Volunteer Fire Department, Library Volunteer Fire Company, and Tri-Community South Emergency Medical Service.

Members of the Allegheny County Police Department and the Sheriffs Department will also be in attendance. Active military personnel and veterans will be honored at the event due to the many sacrifices these men and women have made, and continue to make on behalf of our country. Other participants include the boy scouts, girl scouts, local performers, and a bagpipe player.

South Park Township invites everyone to attend the memorial ceremony that will include patriotic songs and the distribution of American flags. The boy scouts will be collecting old, worn flags that will be retired at a later date The parking lot of Windover Hills United Methodist Church can be used to accommodate any parking overflow, and the church will be used for the ceremony in the event of rain.

"Roll for a Reason Bunco" to be Held October 19 Have fun with friends, roll some dice, and raise money to help find a cure for breast and ovarian cancer. The game is called "Bunco", and it is easy and you don’t have to know how to play to join in. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 19 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair. Fabrizi’s Restaurant Continues Reputation of Fine Dining Brother and Sister Combination Maintain a Family Owned Restaurant at Uniontown Area Landmark

A road trip along US 40 between Uniontown and Cumberland, MD is arguably one of the most visually pleasing and historic trips one can make.

It’s especially true between the months of September and October, as fall colors create a breathtaking panorama, which attracts many hundreds of travelers to experience the change of seasons.

At the top of the mountain just outside of Uniontown, another historic attraction has captured the appetites of visitors for many generations, in the form of Fabrizi’s Restaurant, located along Jumonville Road, about 1.5 miles off Route 40 at the summit. The restaurant is located in what was a former summer home owned by Nick and Adeleine Fabrizi. Nick owned an Italian restaurant in town called the “Tripoli”. The summer home served as a location to entertain friends and family during the summer months.

As time passed the friends and family turned into guests and patrons, the house into a restaurant, and the food into time honored tradition. The location is now owned by the brother and sister team of Brad Thomas and Jennifer Richmond, but it maintains the familyowned atmosphere and quiet ambiance it had when it was owned by the Fabrizi family.

“It was a lifelong progression for me,” Thomas said. “We grew up three houses down from here, and I used to work here during high school. I was probably 13 or 14 years old when I had my first encounter with the place. We had been playing basketball down the road and we decided to go inside because we were hungry.” The food instantly made an impact on him, “There was something that was just different, intriguing, I had never tasted anything quite like it, the taste was warm and inviting as a bowl of soup on a cold winter’s day. It made a significant impact on the way I viewed food from there on out” Thomas pointed to the exact table where he and his friends sat that day where they ordered lunch. “When it came time for the bill we didn’t have the money to pay. owner at the time put us in the back peeling potatoes. Ever since then we became friends,” he recalled.

Thomas said he helped out at the restaurant during the summers and during busy times of the year. “We hung out with him after work, and he was very nice and fun to be around.”

After moving away for a short time, Thomas returned to Fabrizi’s in 2003 as a bartender, and told Krofchek (a nephew of original owner Nick Fabrizi) at the time that he would make it a lifelong goal to buy the restaurant if he ever decided to sell. It happened in 2012, just as Jennifer and her fiancé were moving back to the area, after working elsewhere in the food industry.

Without missing a day in the transition, Brad and Jennifer assumed control of Fabrizi’s that same year, with the vision of maintaining the family atmosphere, and the home made selections the restaurant had become famous for since 1942. Their main focus has been on food quality and service.

Brad and Jennifer bring their own skills to the ownership which would appear to be a winning formula.

A graduate of Johnson and Wales University in Virginia, Jennifer is a Navy veteran and is a chef. Her fiancé, Adam Thorpe, is also a chef from the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts.

Adam prepares most of the main dishes and all the home made sauces and pastas. Jennifer specializes in preparing the deserts. Brad, a Marine Corps veteran concentrates on the business and marketing end of Fabrizi’s.

Fabrizi’s offers a menu much like the one that has been provided by the restaurant for generations.

The dinner menu includes choices of

appetizers, soups and salads and an array of home-made pastas and the restaurant’s signature sauces. They also offer a number of entrees from the grill, including steaks, breaded veal cutlets, pork chops Portobello mushrooms and more. Items on the menu marked with a signature “z” indicate they are made from scratch and hand-made at Fabrizi’s.

“All of our sauces are hand-made along with our salad dressings,” Jennifer said. “Our mozzarella is handpulled. Our appetizers are made from scratch, as well as our desserts. We make our own tiramisu, chocolate, caramel and cherry sauce and cheesecake. There’s not much we don’t make from scratch.”

For the first time in its history, Thomas and Richmond began offering a lunch menu beginning in July, which Jennifer said has begun to grow in popularity. The lunch menu also includes an assortment of home-made appetizers, soups and salads, pastas and enormous and delicious sandwiches. Their famous Fabrizi Sub, is so large that part of it will be taken home for a meal later in the day.

Jennifer said Fabrizi’s tries to keep the portions large at a cost that is surprisingly affordable. “We try really hard to make sure that we’re offering an honest, higher quality product and serving it in a unique atmosphere.

Thomas and Richmond said business has grown substantially, especially from people who visit the Nemacolin Gaming Resort, and from the business community from Uniontown.

“We’re really not that far from places like Elizabeth and communities on Route 51,” Jennifer said. “We want to create a place where even large families can come for dinner as well as parties and anniversaries. We can do it well.”

Fabrizi’s is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30 am until 9:00 pm.

Reservations are recommended for parties of more than five guests.

“Dancing for a Cause” Event to Raise Funds for Child Abuse Prevention Stars will be out when local celebrities, hometown heroes and concerned citizens gather to raise funds to help fight child abuse. "Dancing for a Cause" will be held on Friday, October 25 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Southpointe, Canonsburg. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. offering food, entertainment and dancing with all proceeds from the event going to Watchful Shepherd USA and its mission to prevent child abuse.

The main attraction for this event will be the dancing, which features celebrities teaming up with professional dance instructors from the Arthur Murray Dance Studio. “Dancing for a Cause” has the pizzazz of a floor show with the heart of a charity, necessary ingredients for a successful fundraiser. There will also be a special performance by “The Sparks”, Pittsburgh Power’s Professional Dance Team.

Food will be served from 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. with the dance competition from 8:00 - 11:00 p.m. Music and entertainment will be provided by DJ Jiving Johnny.

There is a need for silent auction and Chinese auction items. All donations are tax deductible. Individual tickets are $100 each and tickets at the door are $125.

All proceeds from “Dancing for a Cause” will benefit Watchful Shepherd, a non-profit child abuse prevention program. The Watchful Shepherd program provides families and child victims with wristbands that can activate an electronic device, which in turn activates a computer monitoring system at its National Response Center on a 24-hour-a-day basis.

Local Historian to Speak on Disasters Lawrence Gallant, local author, explorer and historian for the Peters Creek Historical Society, will deliver a presentation on September 23 on ancient catastrophes. Mr. Gallant has participated in several archaeological surveys and exploratory expeditions to South America and Mexico, with a focus on the prehistoric cultures of the north-eastern Andes. He is associate editor of Ancient American magazine and heads their field investigator program.The lecture will be entitled “The Catastrophists” and will take place at the Wright Methodist Church meeting room on Monday, September 23 at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited. WSO Receives Washington Financial Grant to Reach Out to Various Groups For the past three years, Washington Financial Bank has given a grant to the Washington Symphony Orchestra that offers lower income individuals and those with special needs the opportunity to be a part of the WSO’s growing audience. With planning underway for the 2013-14 season, Washington Financial has again stepped forward to offer its support in a grant to enable 200 adults to enjoy the concerts throughout the coming season.

According to Maryann Weinstein, Executive Director of the WSO, “We are very pleased with the ongoing support of Washington Financial in this unique program. Through their generosity, the WSO can offer free tickets to many who may never have had the opportunity to attend one of our performances. We distribute free tickets paid for by the grant through a number of social service agencies dealing with a variety of age levels and special needs. We are pleased to partner with Washington Financial to make this possible.�

Austin Szuminsky of Finleyville Receives Eagle Scout Honor On August 7, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church of Finleyville, Austin James Szuminsky received the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America - Eagle Scout. A Court of Honor was conducted with attendance including members of Troop 1452, friends, and family. In addition, Austin received awards from others in attendance including Union Township Supervisor Steve Parish, PA State Representatives Rick Saccone and Tim Murphy, and representatives from the Finleyville American Legion post 613 Charles Ringling and Harry Lytle.

Austin chose to award his Eagle Mentor pin to his Scoutmaster Andrew Sneed for not only his personal guidance but devotion service to Troop 1452.

Austin joined the scouting movement

in 2000 as a tiger cub to eventually become a Webelo Scout and earn the Arrow of Light award.

Austin was received into Boy Scouts at a Crossover ceremony Austin Szuminsky awards his Eagle in March of 2005. During his Mentor pin to his Scoutmaster scouting career Austin earned Austin Szuminsky with his parents and American Legion members.

Monongahela Swimmer Competes at National Event Congratulations to Sarah Noll of Monongahela, PA, who recently made a qualifying time for the 2013 YMCA Summer Long Course Nationals Swimming Championship in the 100 backstroke. She attended the event, which was held from July 29 to August 2, with 12 other swimmers from the Laurel Highlands Regional YMCA. Sarah is 13 years old and homeschooled in the Ringgold School District. She would like to thank her previous coaches Jamie Stache and Laura Seitz as well as current coach at Laurel Highlands for helping to make this dream come true.

The Ringgold high school boys and girls soccer teams are holding a combined youth night celebrating the young soccer players in our area on Monday, September 9 at the Ringgold High School Stadium. The girl's game vs. McKeesport begins at 6:00 p.m., and the boy’s game vs. Elizabeth Forward starts at 8:00 p.m.

There will be raffles and giveaways at each halftime. In the period in between the games, all youth teams present and their coaches will be announced, brought onto the soccer field, and given a treat bag. All players and coaches wearing their team shirt will get free admission and a coupon for a free hot dog, drink and chips.

Major Trouble FC Wins Championship of Premier Co-ed Soccer League On Wednesday, August 21st, the championship game of the Pittsburgh Premier Co-ed Soccer League was played at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh between Major Trouble FC and Beer Nutz.

Major Trouble FC won a close game by a score of 2- 1 in golden goal over time!

Major Trouble FC is a team comprised largely of Mon Valley Alumni. Many of the players went to Ringgold High School, or California University of PA and other local schools. Though having an ominous beginning to their season Major Trouble turned it around in the playoffs and become champions of the league for 2013.

The team has grown over the past few years under the leadership of team captain, and Finleyville native, John Dimoff. The team’s success has proved that the Mon Valley is still churning out first class futbol players, among other athletes.

Major Trouble FC and all the teams and players of the Pittsburgh Premier Football League would like to thank the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Highmark Stadium for allowing us to play our championship game at their field.

Modernettes Win Baton Twirling National Championships

The Modernettes, a competition baton corp from the south hills, attended the National Baton Twirling Association National Championships over the summer.

The competition is called "America's Youth on Parade" and is held at Notre Dame University.

The Modernettes competed in 4 events and won 4 first place awards! The Juvenile Modernettes, twirlers between the ages of 7 and 12, won the juvenile National Show Corps Championships with a show about "A Day in Pittsburgh" and also won the Juvenile National Pom Pon Championships with their award winning routine "Rockin Robin".

Senior Modernettes, twirlers between the ages of 13 and 20, won the Senior Show Corps Championships and the Senior National Pom Pon Championship with a perfect score in choreography.

Both the Juvenile and Senior Modernette Show Corps advanced to the Grand Finals. This is a competition where all 1st place Show Corps compete against each other. The Senior Modernettes were again victorious winning the "Grand National Championship" title.

The week prior to the N.B.TA nationals, both corps competed at the Twirling Unlimited International competition in Canton, Ohio. Again the Juvenile and Senior Modernettes won all 1st place awards and the Senior Modernettes won the "Outstanding Corps of the Day".

Pitt Football Players Visit Clairton Youth Football Camp On Saturday, July 27, University of Pittsburgh student-athletes taught Clairton Little League Football Association players the importance of hard work and education during a football camp held in the morning. Clairton graduates Tyler Boyd, Terrish Webb, Trent Coles, Emmanuel Williams and Kevin Weatherspoon and their Pitt teammates Manasseh Garner and Ed Tinker led about 50 young Bears in drills and lessons.

Association president Tonya Payne, Boyd's mother, said the youngsters' were excited when they received information about that the Pitt Players coming to do a camp with them. All of the returning Pitt players had participated in the Clairton University of Pittsburgh Student-Athlete and 2103 Clairton Graduate, Tyler Boyd pictured with youth association players and coaches.

Little League Football Program when they were younger. The association is for players ages 5-14. Boyd and Webb played together in the program and went on to help lead the high school team to several WPIAL and 4 consecutive state championships along with a 63-game winning streak — which is the longest in the nation.

The college players emphasized the importance of education and getting good grades in order to play football. They also talked about respect and making the right decisions as you mature. Electronics Recycling Fundraiser Clairton's Chapter of the Nation Honor Society and Varsity Cheerleaders will be kicking off an Orro recycling fundraiser for the month of September. Money raised will go to supplies and for charitable events. Orro will work with the Clairton Honor Society to collect used consumer electronics. Old cell phones, laptop computers, tablets, DVD players, Blu-Ray players, Blu-Ray's, DVD’s, video games, MP3 players, flat screen monitors. Whether they work or not.

Once the items are collected, Orro takes them down to a facility on the South Side where they are reprocessed, in order to find the best second life, and possibly keep them in circulation in the marketplace. They work with a network of secondary buyers, recyclers, and scrap specialists in order to maximize the value of the items we collect, and in turn, maximize the return that Clairton will receive through these donations.

Area Church News..Area Church News Understanding Christian Mission Professor Scott W. Sunquist will be returning to the Pittsburgh area September 14 and 15 to speak at the Renée Omstead Memorial Event which is being held at Scott W. Sunquist Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church, 199 Old Clairton Road.

Scott W. Sunquist is the Dean and Professor of World Christianity of the School of Intercultural Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary. His courses at the Seminary are related to mission theology and world Christianity. Sunquist co-founded with Dr. Glendora Paul the “World Mission Initiative” at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary which helps churches and seminary students increase their involvement in world mission.

He also helped to start a one year missional urban discipleship program called the World Christian Discipleship program in Pittsburgh.

During this two day event, Professor Sunquist will be sharing his understanding that the Christian Mission is carried out in suffering in this world for God’s eternal glory.

A New Year of AWANA at Crossroads Ministries Crossroads Ministries will begin the 20132014 season of AWANA (Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed) on September 4 at 6:30 p.m. This children’s program is for boys and girls, age 3 through and including the fifth grade. Q: What is the cause of back pain?

A: It is usually due to the body's natural response to injury or degenerative conditions of

the spine. Most of the time it is resolved by time and does not require surgical intervention.

Healing time is usually about 6 weeks. Sudden pain could be due to overstretched muscles or ligaments. It could be due to acute herniation of the disc between the vertebras. MONONGAHELA VALLEY HOSPITAL OFFERS FREE PROSTATE SCREENING PROGRAM Monongahela Valley Hospital in Carroll Twp. is offering a free prostate education and screening program Wednesday, September 18, at 5:30 p.m. in the Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center. Attendees will learn about the importance of early detection and will also have the option to receive an exam by MVH’s medical staff along with a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test. MULTIPHASIC BLOOD ANALYSIS OFFERED AT MONONGAHELA VALLEY HOSPITAL Just a small blood sample can detect diseases of the heart, liver, kidneys and circulatory system. Monongahela Valley Hospital will hold its semi-annual Multiphasic Blood Analysis Screening, Saturday, September 28, from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center. Registration is required. On each blood sample, 36 individual tests will be performed that can reveal anemia, lung disease, diabetes, leukemia, high cholesterol, blood disorders and much more. Additional screenings, including Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and Prostatic Specific Antigen (PSA), will also be available for a nominal additional cost. MVH’s Multiphasic Blood Analysis is open to the public at a cost of only $25 per person. Testing is done by pre-registration and appointment only.

Meals on Wheels Program of Peters Township is Growing More Volunteer Drivers are Needed Meals on Wheels of Peters Township has expanded to 11 routes in the Peters, Canonsburg, Houston, Finleyville, Eighty-Four, and Bridgeville areas. All together, about 175 clients are served each day, and the need for meals continues to grow throughout the service area.

To help meet this demand, more volunteer delivery drivers are needed.

Delivering meals is an enjoyable, rewarding activity for volunteers to do alone or with a spouse or friend. Drivers pick up meals at 10:30 a.m. at the kitchen at 245 E. McMurray Road, above the Peters Township Fire Department, and return from their routes by 12:30 p.m. Drivers are needed for both current routes and new routes as the program expands.

Director Susan Ruether Hanawalt encourages anyone interested in volunteering to stop by the kitchen any weekday morning. “Please come and see our operation in progress. Come between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. if you want to see the impressive assembly line of our kitchen volunteers in action.”

Seniors for Safe Driving Upcoming Events Seniors for Safe Driving presents highway safety education programs for Seniors 55 years of age and older. The highway safety programs are certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The successful completion of the program makes seniors eligible for a 5 percent discount on their automobile insurance premiums, across the board, for a period of three years.

The discount is mandated by Pennsylvania state law.

If you have never participated in a Senior Driving Program before, you must attend a two day program. To qualify for a one day program, you must have taken a Senior Driving Program in the past. No exceptions.

Meals on Wheels of Peters Township is an independent, non-profit organization that has been serving the community for 39 years. Current clients give this program very positive reviews for the quality of the food. Thanks to generous community support, the meals delivered are healthy and delicious, and the fee is modest. The cost for a week of hot meals is $15.00. Each day’s delivery includes soup, a hot entrée with meat, vegetable, and starch, and also salad, dessert, and milk. For $18/week, a client can receive all the hot meal items plus a sandwich, juice, and cookie for a second meal. Regular and diabetic meals are offered, and accommodations can be made for some allergies and special needs. For more information, call 724-969-1000.
