he South Park BMX track has been a long-time staple on the national BMX Racing circuit, and this year was no different when South Park hosted the traditional "Stars and Stripes BMX National" over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. More than 1,100 racers from across the country and all over the world came to compete on South Park’s legendary BMX track, known for its big jumps and full throttle racing. The event featured Olympic competitors including Donny Robinson, Maris Stromberg, David Herman, Corben Sharrah and Nic Long. Over 200 action packed motos kept fans and spectators on the edge of their seats Saturday and Sunday! Sixteen (16) Bike Shop teams also competed for cash prizes and standings. South Park’s local BMX team, Thunder Racing, lit up the track to net the 1st place team win on Saturday with a score that rocketed to 166 points! This weekend was a big win for the team and they’re looking forward to more racing in Ohio, Delaware, and Kentucky. Thunder Racing is a nationally recognized team with thirty (30) riders, ranging in age from 5 to 55 and sponsored by Dan’s Comp, Mon River Supply, Liberty Sports, World of Wheels, Minniefield Construction, Eastern Tile, Conspec, and Gate Nine Design. South Park BMX hosts local races every Wednesday from April through October.

Outdoor Summer Concerts Worthy of More Support Dear Editor, I just attended my third concert at the recently renovated Monongahela Aquatorium and enjoyed myself immensely. However I couldn't get out of my head the question, "where is everyone?" While I am not fond of crowds and waiting in long lines, there was no evidence of these problems at the events and there was certainly ample room for more people to be present. These concerts are most inexpensive and enjoyable outdoor entertainment in the area. I don't know why more people haven't taken part in this local festivity. There is nothing more fun than enjoying the summer weather outdoors listening to music. The price of admission is only $10. Parking is free. There are plenty of vendors to satisfy your hunger or thirst and local merchants attend to provide shopping or souvenirs if desired. The concerts run every Saturday thru the end of August. Kudos to the Monongahela Cemetery for a Wonderful Anniversary Celebration Dear Editor, We attended a wonderful musical concert held at the Monongahela Cemetery in honor of their 150th Anniversary on June 28, 2013. Paul Dolinar and his “Too Many Tubas” along with a number of his musical friends from the Community Band performed for a couple hundred people. The musical talent represented spanned several generations. The music was uplifting and lively even considering the venue was a cemetery. The program included a variety of music from show tunes to tributes to our veterans. The band was comprised of several different retired band directors and music teachers from the area as well as young college students majoring in music. Some of the solos included Paul Frederick singing “Beep Beep”, a trio including Dorothy Dolinar, Erika Hubbell and Sylvia Bender sang the “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”, Laura Bertoni on the alto saxophone played “Harlem Nocturne”, and Dana Robinson with “Joy to the World”. Kudos to the “Too Many Tubas”, the Community Band, Scott Frederick and his committee for putting together this extravaganza of music. $3,000 in Grants Awarded to “Clicks for Cash” Contest Winners The Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF) has announced the results of its recent web-based “Clicks for Cash” contest for charities that have registered to participate in WCCF Gives – its inaugural community-wide day of giving on September 10. Members of the community were encouraged to participate by visiting www.wccfgives.org and clicking on the charity profile pages of their favorite WCCF Gives participants. The WCCF tracked the unique pageviews of each charity’s profile page from June 10-23 to determine a winner. Each unique pageview was counted as a vote for that charity. Receiving more than 400 votes during the contest period, Washington Symphony Orchestra secured the grand prize: a $1,000 unrestricted grant from the Acorn Fund. All other participating charities were entered into a computerized lottery for an opportunity to receive one of four $500 Acorn Fund grants. The charities received one chance in the lottery for each vote they received in the contest. The Brownson House, Old Schoolhouse Players, Children’s School of Washington, and the Literacy Council of Southwestern Pennsylvania were randomly selected as the lottery winners. “With 5,580 votes recorded, the ‘Clicks for Cash’ contest greatly surpassed our expectations,” stated Betsie Trew, WCCF President & CEO. “The primary factor in determining how well our charities will do on September 10 is the public’s awareness of the day of giving opportunity. We want our charities to do well and so we designed the ‘Clicks for Cash’ contest as a dress rehearsal for WCCF Gives, rewarding those charities who took steps to increase the public’s awareness of the opportunity." WSO Receives Heinz Grant To Support Season Opening Concert The Washington Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce receipt of a $7,000 grant from The Heinz Endowments’ Small Arts Initiative to assist with the production of its October 12th concert – “Space – The Final Frontier.” Grants from The Heinz Endowments’ Small Arts Initiative are designed to further the development of small, professional arts’ organizations by providing support for specific projects or other artistic opportunities. WSO President Mary C. Courtney said, “The WSO board is honored to be awarded our third grant from the Heinz Endowments’ Small Arts Initiative. Heinz’s financial support allows us to push our artistic boundaries. The October performance will combine great classical music and modern familiar selections that engage the audience in the theme of space exploration. Monongahela Valley Hospital To Go Tobacco-Free in 2014 Monongahela Valley Hospital is joining the movement to better health. Effective January 2, 2014, MVH will become a tobacco-free environment. “It’s the right thing to do,” said Louis J. Panza Jr., the health system’s president and CEO. “The residents of this area look to Monongahela Valley Hospital for guidance, and they trust us to act responsibly in matters related to preventative health care.” The new tobacco-free policy will apply to all patients, visitors, employees, medical staff, volunteers, contractors and students on the hospital’s Carroll Township campus including the parking garage. In addition, the use of tobacco products will be prohibited in all Hospitalowned or leased buildings and outdoor areas as well as vehicles parked on MVH-owned or leased premises. Smoking and tobacco products include but are not limited to: cigarettes, cigars, pipes, electronic cigarettes, chewing tobacco including dip, oral and spitting tobacco, snuff and any other form of smokeless tobacco. Medical and scientific experts have conducted extensive research which indicates that smoking, the inhalation of second-hand smoke and the use of tobacco products are major health threats. As a community leader for health and wellness, MVH has an obligation to provide and promote a safe and healthful environment for everyone who visits its sites.

"Trucks, Tractors, & Trolleys" Event at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum will hold its annual "Trucks, Tractors & Trolleys" event on Sunday, August 25 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Visitors can see dozens of classic tractors, pickup trucks, delivery vehicles, and modern construction and commercial vehicles including a rare 1940 Ford Armored Car from Northwest Savings Bank and a modern Waste Management truck powered by natural gas. Visitors can ride three different trolleys (running every 15 minutes) and tour the Trib Total Media Trolley Display Building, which houses nearly three dozen streetcars, and the Restoration Shop. This is the third year that the museum has teamed with the Washington & Greene County Antique Tractor Association for Trucks, Tractors & Trolleys. The tractors were a popular addition to previous shows. There will also be a World War II encampment with uniformed interpreters and informational exhibits and numerous artifacts. There will be a food and ice cream vendor on site, and visitors can enjoy the picnic area while DJ Fritz plays a variety of music. Families can check out the East Penn Traction Club’s model train display and also take advantage of the children’s play area, which includes face painting, Thomas and Chuggington play tables, and play trolley car 225. The museum welcomes those would like to display a vehicle during the show. Pre-registration is not required and there is no fee, though contributions are welcome. Vehicles should arrive before 10am, with the first 50

It was standing room only at Bethel Park's John McMillan Presbyterian Church Vacation Bible School on June 25, 2013, when the kids gathered outside to meet 'Sugar' the Shetland Pony and 'Cappy' the Palimino Pony. Certified Riding Instructor Mary Amoroso of Horses Unlimited Stables in South Park talked to the kids about the care of horses and ponies, and then held Lydia Goodman on Sugar, with a question and answer session with the Rachel Stoker of Bridgeville assisting. kids. Afterwards, the children lined up to pet the ponies goodbye. Pastor Louise Rogers invited Mary and her ponies to the Bible School to keep with this year's Western theme. Accompanying the ponies was 6 year old riding student, Lydia Goodman of Bethel Park, who demonstrated her horseback riding skills by riding Sugar right up to the crowd! Also assisting was 14 year old riding student Rachel Stoker of Bridgeville.

Why Flood Insurance? Homeowner's insurance is an important thing for any homeowner to have. It covers your home and belongings if they are destroyed by disasters such as tornados or fires, but covers nothing in the case of a flood. Flood insurance is provided by the government through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). It can be purchased from your homeowner's insurance agent, but it is completely separate from your homeowner's policy. Flood insurance is relatively inexpensive, so if you live near a small stream, lake or one of our major rivers it is well worth considering.
Property located in low flood-prone areas may be able to get a lower premium on their flood insurance. Even if you're not near a body of water, flooding is possible from melting snow or water running downhill. If you might possibly be at risk for these occurrences, you may want to consider flood insurance as well. A little know fact is that about 25% of all flood insurance claims are located outside of a high-risk flood area. Flood insurance may cover the replacement value of your home and the cash value of your belongings. There is a limit to how much they will pay on both. To compensate, some specialized insurance companies sell excess flood insurance. It picks up where federal flood insurance leaves off, covering the remainder of replacement value on your house and cash value of your personal property. Often people in flood-prone areas do not purchase flood insurance because the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers assistance after floods in those areas. However, FEMA can only provide assistance in areas that have been declared federal disaster areas. If the President does not make this declaration, those without insurance have no assistance in rebuilding. When buying a home, flood insurance is usual-

The Kastan Uveges VFW Post 7632 and Ladies Auxiliary and the Alonzo Weigle American Legion Post 553 celebrated a busy Memorial Day weekend with visitations, flag decorations, and a 21 gun salute at all the War Memorial sites. A reception for dignitaries was held at the Rock Run Inn, Butler Golf Course on Sunday evening. The veterans participated in the Elizabeth Borough Parade on Memorial Day and also in services that followed at Riverfront Park in Elizabeth. A wreath was laid on the waters of the Monongahela River with the Community invited for lunch at the Elizabeth Fire Hall. Commander Rick Elster, USN retired and fellow veterans headed out the Memorial Day parade in Elizabeth.

In 1794 the U.S. Government under George Washington sent troops to enforce a new tax on whiskey made by southwest PA farmers on the Appalachian frontier, and to capture David Bradford at his home in Washington. These reenactors came to arrest Bradford who was a prominent figure in the Whiskey Rebellion.

The streets of Washington resounded with music and "gunfire" the weekend of July 11-13 with the celebration of the 2013 Third Annual Whiskey Rebellion The festival featured many displays Festival. of early American crafts and artifacts The Festival began with programs on and reenactors in period clothing. Thursday in conjunction with the Washington Main Street Farmer's Market and a performance under the stars by the Washington Symphony Orchestra at 8:00 pm. A "Blues, Brews & BBQ" and bands including Ruby Red, Jill West and the Blues Attack, and the Billy Price Band performed on Friday. The Main Street Community Parade began the celebration on Saturday morning along with reenactments, great food and craft booths, historic displays and community organization booths, a scavenger hunt, tours of the Bradford and LeMoyne Houses, and many other fun activities that concluded with performances by the Panther Hollow String Band, The Weedrags, the SteelDrivers and a great fireworks finale.
Benefit Bike Ride in Bentleyville "Ride for Aidan" Set for August 24 The Bentleyville Eagle Riders are hosting a bike run on August 24 for Aidan. Aidan, a 5th grader from Bentleyville, was diagnosed on September 21, 2012, with Ewing’s Sarcoma bone cancer. He receives treatment at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh including nearly a year of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Aidan enjoys playing with Lego’s and video games. He loves all things Mario and Nintendo and playing with the family dog, Champ. His favorite school subjects are math and science. Someday, he hopes to become an inventor. He is a wonderful big brother to 5 year old, Dylan. Through his battle with cancer, Aidan has displayed immeasurable amounts of strength and courage. Registration will be from 9:00 - 10:30 am. Two are Recognized with American Legion Awards An Awards Assembly at Ringgold Middle School was held on Wednesday June 5, 2013. At that time the winners of the American Legion School Awards were announced. This year’s recipients are Sydney Drischler, daughter of Mr. Ronald and Kimberly Drischler of Monongahela, PA and Zachary Mendola, son of Mr. Jeffery and Christine of Monongahela, PA. The American Legion Award places emphasis on the development of the qualities of Courage, Honor, Leadership, Patriotism, Scholarship and Service - the ideals of Americanism which will make young people citizens of the highest type. The award recognizes the boy and girl who is most worthy of the highest qualities of citizenship and of true Americanism. The awards were presented by members of the American Legion Post #613, Finleyville.
Learn Primitive Fire Making at Mingo Creek Park Learn how to make fire the old-fashion way! The Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering a “Primitive Fire Making” program at Mingo Creek Park on Wednesday, August 21. The program will be held at Shelter 6 and will begin at 6:30 p.m. Various methods and techniques of fire making will be shared. All participants will have an opportunity to make fire using flint and steel. Senator Smith, Bethel Park Officials to Host Free Shredding Event in August State Senator Matt Smith (D-Allegheny/Washington) is partnering with the officials from Bethel Park to offer a free shredding event for constituents in the municipality. Monongahela Valley Hospital and Parent Organization Reelect Boards Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) and its parent organization, Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc. (MVHR) has reelected their boards which are comprised of some of the area’s most respected business, medical and community leaders. John D. Fry, of McMurray, president and owner of Procurement Specialty Group, Inc., has been reelected chairman of the Board of Directors of MonVale Health Resources, Inc. and chairman of the Board of Trustees Monongahela Valley Hospital, Inc. Plum Street Project in Elizabeth Borough a Success By Charlotte Hopkins
Three years ago, the Plum Street Committee embarked on the task of revitalizing Plum Street in downtown Elizabeth to make it useful for nonprofit groups to hold fund raising events and for the borough to hold community events. The committee is made up of 4 people, Lori Kolodziej (chairperson), Larry Duvall (council liaison), Margaret Fleischauer (grant writer), and Lynn McHolme (treasurer). Plum Street has power sources for outdoor electrical equipment and here are also tables and chairs for use by groups that want to host events. It has already been used for summer concerts, a pancake breakfast, and a chili cook-off. Anyone interested in using Plum Street for a group event can contact Lori at 412-384-0504.

"Farmer Jenise," former Monessen Public Library children's librarian who now resides in New Jersey, paid a visit to the Monongahela Area Library Storytime to read books about growing fruits and vegetables and hard working farmers. Summer Preschool Storytime has ended in Monongahela, but the library is accepting registration for Fall Storytime set to begin September 11.
August Children's Storytime Helps Prep for Kindergarten The Monongahela Area Library will host three children’s Storytime programs during the month of August aimed at getting children excited about starting Kindergarten. Each week the Storytime will be geared at skills and knowledge the children will be using in Kindergarten, as well as books from the suggested Ringgold reading list. The program starts on Wednesday, August 7 at 11 a.m. with “Letters,” followed on the succeeding weeks by “Numbers and Colors” and “Shapes and Rhymes.” It will conclude with a special Kick of Kindergarten party including special guests to entertain the children.
The Monongahela Area Library will be hosting an afternoon of Rick Riordan-inspired activities called “Percy Fest.” Tuesday, August 6 at 1:00 p.m. the library will welcome young enthusiasts of the Percy Jackson titles for an afternoon of pizza, crafts inspired by the cultures in author Riordan’s books, as well as some games, trivia challenges, and fan fun. The grand door prize for the day of fun filled activities will be a pair of tickets to a showing of “Sea of Monsters,” the new Percy Jackson film set to open August 7, 2013. Although a variety of craft activities will be offered, the creation of a “Camp Half-Blood” T-shirt requires that attendees register in advance by calling the library at 724-258-5409. MVRCC Awards Event Set for September 12
A local man who provided vision and leadership to Monongahela Valley Hospital and its predecessor hospitals for nearly 45 years was honored by more than 150 staff, friends and family when the fountain on the Carroll Twp. campus was dedicated in his memory. The late Joseph U. Frye, of Monongahela, was a valued leader of the health care system since 1968, 10 years before the present MVH opened its doors. He was elected chairman of the Mon-Vale Health Resources’ Board in 1985 and served until 1991 when he was elected chairman of the hospiMrs. Fran Frye, Monongahela Valley Hospital tal’s Board of Trustees. His term as president and CEO Louis J. Panza Jr. and MVH Board of Trustees Chairman John D. Fry stand near chairman of the Trustees concludthe plaque they unveiled to more than 150 friends ed in 1996, but he provided and family dedicating MVH’s fountain to Mrs. Frye’s insight and guidance to the health late husband Joseph. Mr. Frye served the hospital system by remaining a member of health system for 45 years. both boards until his death. Mr. Panza, Mr. Frye’s wife Fran, and MVH Board of Trustees Chairman John D. Fry unveiled the cast bronze plaque, which reads, “This fountain is dedicated to the memory of Joseph Urli Frye, our friend and colleague who served as a trustee July 1, 1968 to July 9, 2012 — forever in our thoughts.� The late Mr. Frye’s leadership extended beyond the hospital. As president of Frye Construction, Inc., and Frye Home Center in Monongahela, he was a successful businessman. Additionally, as a member and officer of various civic, professional and development organizations over the years, he was a respected community leader.

A Bit of Italy Comes to Mon City Italian Village Pizza Open for Business By Kyra Bergman
“Everyone knows Pizza Frank.” Stephan Nowo, owner of the new Italian Village Pizza in Monongahela, said. He’s referring to Frank Veltri, who opened the first Italian Village at Century III Mall in 1980 with his partner Jack Miller. But Nowo knows him as Uncle Frank. Stephan knew from a young age that he wanted to get into the family business. “When I was sixteen, a junior in high school, I had to write a paper on what I wanted to be.” Nowo said. “I wrote that I wanted to own a pizza place.” Now, with his business partner and brotherin-law Chuck Jeffers, he owns two. Nowo opened the Belle Vernon store in 2004 and after closing a Squirrel Hill shop he started the search for another location. When asked why he chose Monongahela he explained, “People at my Belle Vernon store were asking for one. Now about 10% of my walk-in customers here were Belle Vernon regulars who live in Mon City.” Nowo also said Monongahela was very welcoming. T he family recently held a grand opening for their "Top of the Mornin' Donut Shop" in Elizabeth Borough, where the donuts are baked fresh daily and the coffee is always hot. There will be a different assortment of donuts and baked goodies offered each day, which will include pastries, cookies and even cannoli! For the lunch crowd, there are hot dogs, chips and drinks! One hundred twenty six Ringgold Middle School students recently presented their spring musical: Disney's The Little Mermaid Jr. These talented thespians and musicians studied all aspects of musical theater from auditions to opening night. They learned and were assisted with amazing choreography, blocking, set design and building, sound and lighting, and costumes. These students performed for standing-room-only crowds! What wonderful nights under the sea!

Ten Ringgold students recently studied with three of the world's top Scottish harp teachers at the Ohio Scottish Arts School at Oberlin College. While there, they were privileged to study under Corinna Hewitt of Scotland, Sue Richards of Virginia, and Abby Palmer of Maryland. These students are part of the Ringgold Celtic Harp program and are preparing for the National Scottish Harp Competition at the Ligonier Highland Games at Idelwild Park on Saturday, September 21. This event is sponsored by LHG, Scottish Harp Society of America, and Clan Currie. Ringgold Celtic Harp students play every month in the lobby of the Monongahela Valley Hospital and recently played at the Art in the Park festival in Chess Park in Monongahela.
Ringgold School District Sixth Grade Orientation An orientation program will be conducted for incoming sixth grade and new seventh and eighth grade students and their parents on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at 6:00 pm at the Ringgold Middle School in the Ringgold School District. The program will introduce students and parents to specific school policies and procedures. Questions will be answered by the school administration, counselors, and a tour of the building will be conducted.

Elizabeth United Methodist Early Learning Center Introduces New Kindergarten Readiness Program Summer is quickly flying by and before you know it, fall will be upon us. A new season means a new school year is around the corner. In preparation, Elizabeth United Methodsit (E.U.M.) Early Learning Center is launching a new kindergarten readiness program. This new program, "Kindergarten Here We Come", replaces our traditional Preschool program and will teach your child skills necessary to enter kindergarten. We believe that children should love and enjoy their preschool and kindergarten years and this can be accomplished by providing gentle, fun, and consistent learning experiences. The program will work on such goals as: • Following simple directions • Letter/number recognition • Beginning letter sounds • Phonemic awareness • Increasing vocabulary • Writing child’s own name • Reciting birthday and home address • Listening to others • Sharing • Raising their hand before speaking The Kindergarten Readiness program will start on Monday, September 9, 2013 and continue through Monday, May 12, 2014. Classes will be held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 am 12:00 pm. Your child may stay until 6:00 pm when the Center closes for the day. There will be an informative meeting on Thursday, August 29 at 7:00 pm in the social hall of the church. E.U.M. Early Learning Center has been educating and caring for children for over 35 years. Our mission is to provide top quality, early childhood care and education to the children in our community in a safe and loving environment. Our services include child-care (6 weeks – 5th grade), before and after school care, kindergarten readiness and summer programs. Clairton Elementary and YMCA Partner for "Y Readers" Program During the summer, the YMCA and Clairton Elementary partnered together for a pilot program called "Y Readers" for students entering first and second grade. The program is funded by a $30,000 grant provided by the YMCA. Clairton is one of 40 schools in the nation to receive this grant. The program is a four-block model, which consists of guided reading, writing, working with words and self-selected reading. In the afternoon there are enrichment activities, which include physical education, character education, art and music. Y Readers are also growing caterpillars into butterflies and they have went on several enrichment fields trips.

Graduating seniors from local high schools who are part of the St. Francis family were honored during a Baccalaureate Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Finleyville on Sunday June 9. Ms. Carol Cicci introduced each graduate and spoke briefly on their high school experience and about their plans for the future. She also presented each of the students with a gift from the Parish. All of the graduates were planning on post high Andrew Obringer (Recipient of the Julie Funtal school education. Father Robert Boyle Scholarship award) is Flanked by Gretchen and Mitch Wagner representing the Columbiettes and was assisted at Mass by Deacon Vic Satter the Knights of Columbus. and both expressed their congratulations to each of the graduates. Each year, one graduating senior from the St. Francis Parish is selected on the basis of academic achievement and service to the church and community to receive the Julie Funtal Scholarship Grant. The grant is a monetary award for post high school education given by the Columbiettes and Knights of Columbus of St. Francis Church in memory of past Columbiette President Julie Funtal. At the Baccalaureate Ceremony this year’s winner was announced to be Andrew Obringer. A check was presented to Andrew which will be used to assist with his college expenses at Penn State Behrand. Pillowcase Dresses Donated Recently 23 Pillowcase Dresses were taken to the Dress a Girl around the World project in Scottsdale, AZ. These dresses are made for little girls around the world. The Scottsdale Bible Church is making 50 mission trips this year. Thanks to Mildred Carey and Donna Irwin who continue to make this mission possible. Bell Tower Restoration Project The work on the Bell Tower restoration project is on schedule by Yohe Roofing. Additional restoration work is the removal and replacement of bell equipment, restoration of two pinnacles, updating of electrical wiring and lighting in the tower and repointing the two pinnacles. St. Thomas A’ Becket to Hold “Bingo Under the Stars” on August 23 This special Bingo, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and St. Thomas A’ Becket Parish, will be held at the Church Pavilion at 139 Gill Hall Road in Jefferson Hills on Friday, August 23 at 7:00 p.m. The cost is $20 per ticket. Bible Baptist Temple’s Vacation Bible Day and Community Picnic We welcome all to participate in an enlightening fun filled day. This excitement will be at Bible Baptist Temple at 1415 Worthington Avenue in Jefferson Hills/Clairton. With a sixth straight sell out at The Willow Room in Rostraver Township on the evening of June 21, the Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame welcomed seven new members into its honored Hall of Fame bringing the number of total inductees to 212. The first two inductees in 1951 were Stan Musial and Bert Rechichar. All seven inductees spoke of their roots in the Mon Valley and the humbleness with which they receive the award. Fifteen Mon valley area graduating scholar athletes were also honored along with three WPIAL gold winners, Charleroi’s junior Nick Gavazzi in wrestling, California’s junior Kailyn Clancy in track and field and Elizabeth Forward’s senior Braelyn Tracy in swimming. These students received the MMVASHOF Achievement award. Richard Bucchianeri, long-time Valley educator, was awarded the 2013 MMVASHOF Appreciation award for his vast contributions to the Hall’s success. The 21st annual induction banquet will be held on Friday June 20, 2014.

Bethel Park Resident Elected to WBN Board of Directors
Dr. Michael P. Ghilani Named 2013 High School Principal of the Year
Marylu McKown of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania was recently elected to the Board of Directors for Women's Business Network, Inc. (WBN) and will be serving as the organizations Recording Secretary. A graduate of Robert Morris University, Marylu majored in Accounting and Business Management. She then worked in Health Care Accounting, Reimbursement and Budgeting for 22 years. For the past 15 years she has been in Direct Sales, finally finding her home company Marylu McKown with SendOutCards. Marylu has been an active member of the South Hills Chapter of WBN since 2010. She also volunteers at Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park as an usher and in the hospitality ministry. She previously ministered to the homeless for two years when she lived in Florida and uses that life changing experience in her current volunteer work. She was also a MS facilitator with the South Hills National Multiple Sclerosis Society support group for seven years. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her seven grandchildren who all live in the Pittsburgh area.
Dr. Michael P. Ghilani, Upper St. Clair High School Principal, has been selected as the 2013 Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principal (PAESSP) of the Year. Dr. Ghilani, a former Union Township resident, and Ringgold High School graduate, has been the Principal at Upper St. Clair High School since August 2006. He began his tenure with the School District in August 2001 as the High School Assistant Principal/Dean of Students. Dr. Ghilani’s “open-door policy” has allowed for open communication between teachers, students, staff and Dr. Michael P. Ghilani parents. This effective feedback system has allowed many programs to form under his leadership. These programs include the Asian Studies program, Student Leadership Academy, student mentoring program, and the Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) program and STEM center. Exposing students to Asian culture has allowed for the development of a Chinese and Thai exchange program that gives students an opportunity to visit China and Thailand, and teachers and administrators from these countries a chance to visit Upper St. Clair High School. “I believe in a strong communicative process and structure that involves teachers, staff, students and parents. It is important to know and understand the pulse of the building and community when planning for new programs and initiatives. Our school is truly student-centered and feedback from teachers, students and parents is a key. My strengths as a relational and visionary leader have been allowed to flourish at Upper St. Clair because of the great people I work with and a very supportive superintendent and school board that truly make children our priority,” stated Dr. Ghilani. Dr. Ghilani earned his bachelor of science degree in psychology, his teacher certification from Washington and Jefferson College and his master of education degree in school counseling from the University of Pittsburgh. He received his Ed.D. in counseling and supervision from Duquesne University. Additionally, he completed the principal certification program at Carnegie Mellon University and received his Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility from Gannon University.

Kids & Family Jefferson Hills Library Hosts Summer Reading Program
A visit by Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center's humane and environmental educator Gilda Arroyo and Murphy, a 3-year-old striped skunk, proved to be a very popular day in the Jefferson Hills Library Summer Reading Program. The Summer Reading Program was held from June 1 through July 25 and was called "Dig Into Reading." The program focused on themes relating to natures "diggers" including the skunk, and dinosaurs, fossils and gardening. The program ended on July 25 with a Dinosaur Party.
Busy Bees – Children’s Program at Mingo Creek Park We’ll be busy bees on Thursday, August 8 as we learn about pollination and the important role honeybees play in our environment. Children (ages 5-11) will learn about bees and pollination, taste honey, and even make a beeswax candle to take home. We will meet at Shelter 1 in Mingo Creek County Park. Two sessions are available; Session I will begin at 10:00 a.m. and Session II will begin at 1:00 p.m. Please call the Washington County Parks & Recreation Office at 724-228-6867 to register. Seniors for Safe Driving Upcoming Events Seniors for Safe Driving presents highway safety education programs for Seniors 55 years of age and older. The highway safety programs are certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The successful completion of the program makes seniors eligible for a 5 percent discount on their automobile insurance premiums, across the board, for a period of three years. The discount is mandated by Pennsylvania state law. If you have never participated in a Senior Driving Program before, you must attend a two day program. To qualify for a one day program, you must have taken a Senior Driving Program in the past. No exceptions. Upcoming Area Programs: N. Senior News from the Venetia Community Center The following information is for the Venetia Community Center located at 800 Venetia Rd., Venetia, PA. We are sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging. The August 8 lunch starts with blood pressure screenings at 11:00 am by a nurse from Caring Home Health. A delicious lunch with follow at 12:00 noon prepared by the Canonsburg Senior Center and transported to our Center by our faithful volunteers and served by our capable volunteers in our kitchen. The entertainment will be a speaker, Andrew R. Quinn, from Kennywood Park. A very interesting topic to bring back childhood memories and what has changed over the years. Come and join us. New people are always welcome by calling 724-941-6956 for a reservation. On August 22, there will be blood pressure screenings at 11:00 followed by lunch. After lunch, we will have a guest soloist playing a variety of music on the saxophone by Jeff Ruch with Elizabeth Jeffries on the piano.
