Russell Allridge Steps Down as Finleyville Emergency Coordinator

he Finleyville Borough Council accepted the resignation of Russell Allridge as their Emergency Management Coordinator. Mr. Allridge presented a letter of resignation and also suggested that the position be filled by Mr. Jeff Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence is the current President of the Finleyville Volunteer Fire Department. The Council approved the appointment of Mr. Lawrence subject to his acceptance of the position and accepted Mr. Allridge’s resignation with regrets. The local EMC coordinates activities of Local Emergency Responders with the Washington County Emergency Management Agency in the event of natural or man-made disasters. Emergency care and shelter is provided under the direction of the Local EMC who draws on the resources and equipment provided and stockpiled by the County EMA for disaster use. The local EMC works closely with the 911 center. Mr. Allridge has held the position of Emergency Manager Coordinator for Finleyville for 28 years and at one time also held this position for both Finleyville Borough and Union Township. He remains a Trustee and Life Member of the Finleyville Volunteer Fire Department with which he now has 54 years of service with 50 of those years as an active firefighter. A grateful community sends its thanks for the many years of volunteer service provided by Russ. 50 years as an active emergency responder speaks of real dedication to the community.

Bethesda United Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth, PA, has been holding a "New to You Clothing Give-Away" for the past several years on the last Saturday in July. They will be hosting this event again this year on July 27, 2013, from 8:00 A.M. until 12:00 noon. The Bethesda UPC is located at 314 S. Third Street in Elizabeth (across from the Dollar General and at the bottom of the Route 51 North ramp). The New to You event is free and open to everyone. We are accepting donations. The 2013 Fleatique on the Mon was held throughout Monongahela and New Eagle on Saturday, June 1. Visitors enjoyed browsing a variety of vendor booths and tables featuring artisans, crafters, flea market goods, antiques and food!

MONONGAHELA 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION & FIREWORKS - The Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce and the local business owners are proud to continue the Independence Day Celebration. The fireworks extravaganza will be held Thursday, July 4 at the Monongahela Aquatorium. Entertainment will begin at 6 pm with the fireworks display at 9:45 pm. A rain date of July 5 has been
scheduled. The firework display will be professionally fired by Starfire Corp. of North Cambria, PA. This event is solely funded by Chamber Members, private donations, service clubs and organizations throughout the community. Various Food Vendors, Game Trailers and glow in the dark products will be available during the evening. No alcoholic beverages are permitted on the premises, no firecrackers and no glow in the dark products may be sold. Members of the Chamber of Commerce will be collecting donations, selling glow products and chances for a 50/50 raffle. The winner of the 50/50 raffle will be announced prior to the fireworks. JULY 6

LIBERTY DAY Celebration - The Oliver Miller Homestead (OMH) located on Stone Manse Drive, just off the circle on Corrigan Drive in South Park will be hosting “Liberty Day” on Sunday, July 7, 2013. Join us in celebrating the founding of our country in 1776. Hear a reading of the Declaration of Independence by our re-enactors dressed in 18th century clothing. Valley Inn Sportsman’s Association Holds Annual Fishing Contest New Monongahela Aquatorium a Perfect Venue By Paul Chasko
June 2 was sunny and warm and a perfect day for the Valley Inn Sportsman’s Association Fishing Derby. 89 area kids along with some family members and friends showed up at the City of Monongahela Aquatorium and caught and released over 49 fish…. some of them trophy worthy! The fishing derby ran from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm and there was a lot of action. The kids fished either from the Aquatorium or from the banks of the Monongahela River on either side. A variety of fish were caught and members of the Valley Inn Sportsmen’s’ Association were on hand to see that the fish were netted, measured and released. There were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize trophies for the largest fish caught in the three different age groups ( ages 1-5, 6-10 and 11-15). And there was a single trophy for the most fish caught. There were enough door prizes donated that it seemed every contestant at the event won at least something. Monongahela Mayor Bob Kepics was on hand to congratulate all the winners, and to thank all the local merchants who donated food and prizes to make the event a success and especially to the Valley Inn Sportsmen’s’ Association who made it all happen. Mayor Kepics noted that this was the 10th annual fishing contest hosted at the Monongahela Aquatorium – only one year was missed due to renovations underway at the Aquatorium. The improvements to the Aquatorium are part of a four year program of which the Mayor is justifiably proud. New spectator stands and seating that will withstand any weather, new bathrooms and sewage handling facilities, a new storm water handling system and of course the concession stand were part of program costing about $947,000 over a four year period. For boaters, construction of a new boat dock next to the Aquatorium will begin within the next few weeks. A great deal of work went into acquisition of grant funds from the County and State Agencies. Mayor Kepics, the City Council and the citizens of Monongahela have a right to be proud of the renovated facility. The Aquatorium will serve as an attraction for Monongahela. Monongahela Farmers Market Up and Running! Monongahela's Farmers Market opened June 7 and will continue to run every Friday night through September 27 from 3 - 6 pm. We want to thank the farmers and vendors who bring us such great and colorful fruits, vegetable and other goodies. Canonsburg Holding "Parade of Chairs" Contest The Canonsburg "Parade of Chairs" Contest will be held on Wednesday, July 3 with judging starting at 5:00 p.m. There will be two cash prizes: Most Patriotic and Most Original. Liberty Day Let freedom ring out on Sunday, July 7 at the Oliver Miller Homestead. Join us in celebrating the founding of our country in 1776. Hear a reading of the Declaration of Independence by our re-enactors dressed in 18th century clothing. There will be short biographies of the Declaration signers in the barn. Watch as some of our men fire their Pennsylvania long rifles. See as some of our members participate in a pie eating contest. View the needle work of our members in the Stone House. Talk to our women about their 18th century kitchen and learn how eating habits and recipes have changed. The Trading Post, located in the barn, will be open for business with books, trade goods, and items made at the Homestead available for sale.
Whiskey Rebellion Day Come celebrate Whiskey Rebellion Day on Sunday, July 16 at the Oliver Miller Homestead in South Park. Hear the original play “Serving of the Writ” on how the conflict started. Our men will again seek to resolve their conflict with the Federal Government. Stroll our grounds and talk to the re-enactors representing the era. Listen as they tell of their hopes and grievances. This year we will also focus on the many ways the people of the 18th century quenched their thirst besides just coffee and tea. Hear our members explain how whiskey, beer, metheglin, chocolate, and ginger beer were made. Sorry, no samples are available. All of our buildings will be opened and the Barn will have displays on the Whiskey Rebellion. See stills which started the problems between locals and the Federal Government.

Civil War 150 Program Series Continues at PT Library The Peters Township Public Library will host “Why Did the Klan Wear Bizarre Costumes” on Thursday, July 18 at 7:00 p.m. The program is the third and final portion of “Civil War 150,” a three-part national public programming initiative designed to encourage public exploration of the transformative impact and contested meanings of the American Civil War. The program is presented by The Library of America in partnership with The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and Dr. Elaine Frantz Parsons is supported by a grant from National Endowment for the Humanities. This program will be facilitated by Dr. Elaine Frantz Parsons, Civil War Scholar and Associate Professor of History at Duquesne University. Motorcycle Ride Fundraiser for Military Veterans Hosted by The Bible Chapel
Coming from Waynesburg was a comfortable ride on Barb Cleavenger’s 2012 Can-Am Spyder Limited. This new design puts two wheels up front, instead of the traditional style of two wheels in the back of a trike.
A wide variety of makes and models were included in the contingent of 79 bikes, beating last year’s attendance.

Borrowing the phrase from the Indianapolis 500 auto race, “Gentlemen (and ladies): Start your engines!” The 2nd annual “Ride for the Wreaths” kicked off for a 50-mile jaunt through Washington County. The purpose of the motorcycle ride was to raise money for the “Wreaths Across America” program ( www.wreathsacrossamerica.org) and the “Wounded Warrior Project” ( www.woundedwarriorproject.org). Wreaths Across America commemorates the sacrifices that fallen military personnel have given, whereas the Wounded Warrior Project empowers military veterans who have incurred service-connected injuries. To honor National Maritime Day (May 18th), the Mon Valley Chapter of the American Merchant Marine Veterans hosted the annual Memorial Wreath Laying Ceremony in Elizabeth Borough. The ceremony was a tribute to all members of the military, those of yesterday and today, prisoners of war, those missing in action, and those who served during war time, as well as peace time. "Most people are natural born merchants, yearning to set sails into open waters," stated Merchant Marine, Rod Driscol. "We wouldn't be here today if ancient humans didn't board boats and head into the unknown." Merchant marines escorted members of the Junior Girl Scout Troop #54212 Merchant Marines following Junior Girl Scout and Senior Girl Scout Troop #54203 of Troop #54212 and Senior Girl Scout Troop Elizabeth Borough, while they carried #54203, carrying wreaths for the tribute the ceremonial wreaths. The Rifle Guard from Port Vue Post No. 447 Port Vue Post American Legion gave a 21-gun salute. No. 447 American During peace time, the Merchant Legion Rifle Marines transport goods and services, in Guard honand out of the United States. During oring wartime, they deliver troops and supMerchant plies for the military. Most people are Marines with a 21-gun unaware that during World War II, the salute Merchant Marines suffered from the highest number of casualties. They are also the only military group that was racially integrated at that time. They recently broke ground for the erection of a World War II museum, where the Merchant Marines will be recognized appropriately. During the Vietnam War, 95% of the cargo ships were run by the Merchant Marines.

Committee Approves Bill Naming Bridge for Local Marine The Senate Transportation Committee unanimously approved a bill renaming the Route 88 Bridge over Ten Mile Creek for a highly decorated U.S. Marine veteran who was born in nearby Fredericktown. Senate Bill 546, sponsored by Sen. Tim Solobaby, names the new bridge that connects Washington and Greene counties the “Lieutenant General William M. Keys Bridge.” “General Keys is one of the most decorated soldiers ever hailing from Pennsylvania and, in fact, is one of the most successful soldiers in the country,” Solobay said. “He made his hometown proud in service around the world and this bill will make sure his name stays connected to the region.” Born in Fredericktown, Lt. Gen. Keys graduated from West Point and the National War College and served as a Company Commander in Vietnam. By the time Operation Desert Storm was being planned, he was a Commanding General of more than 20,000 Marines and devised a famous “two-axis” attack that General Norman Schwarzkopf called “simply brilliant.” Lt. Gen Keys has been awarded the Navy Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star with Combat "V", two Distinguished Service Medals, the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Cross of Gallantry, Legion of Merit with Combat "V", Defense Meritorious Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1994, after 34 years of service. The 384-foot, $10 million Route 88 bridge was completed a year ago, replacing an older steel truss bridge. It connects East Bethlehem Township, Washington County with Jefferson Township, Greene County. Senate Bill 546 now goes to the full Senate for a vote. It mirrors legislation (House Bill 1002) introduced in the House of Representatives by state Rep. Pam Snyder.

Memorial Day Services Held Throughout Area By Paul Chasko
The weekend of May 25-27, 2013 is commonly known by many as “Memorial Day Weekend”. The unofficial kick-off for Summer, and a weekend full of picnics, fireworks, and holiday pay away from work. But more importantly, it is a time to honor our fallen heroes who died to help protect these freedoms that we all enjoy. Communities throughout our area, held a variety of Memorial Day services from parades, speeches, and patriotic songs to rifle salutes and the playing of taps. Two such communities, Monongahela and Finleyville held ceremonies at local cemeteries to pay tribute to our fallen heroes.

Monongahela Like many other Mon Valley communities, Monongahela began its Memorial Day with a parade through town. Later in the morning there was a wellattended ceremony at the Veteran’s Memorial in Monongahela Cemetery. The Mon Valley Honor Guard The grassy knoll opposite displays the colors the memorial stage was packed with folks listening to the various dignitaries reminding us of the sacrifices made by the Veterans now interred in their home soil. Representatives of our City, County and State governments were there and listened as we all did to patriotic songs done by the Ringgold High School Band and vocal groups. Groups taking part in the ceremony and/or the parade were the Mon Valley Leathernecks, The Mon Valley Honor Guard, the Mon Valley Shipmates, the Ringgold High School Marching Band, and American Legion Posts 302, 949 and 613.
On Sunday, May 26, a caravan of caring folks led by members of various Veterans’ Groups made its way from St. Francis to Stone Church to Finleyville and finally to Mingo. These are names of four local cemeteries that hold the remains of service men and women who are now at home and at peace. It’s a quiet group of local folks who remember and Laying the memorial wreath honor sacrifices made by departed loved ones. The Mon–Valley Honor Guard carries the colors to each site accompanied by residents who share this duty with countless others across the country on this special weekend. There’s the display of the colors, the memorial reading, placing of a commemorative wreath, the rifle salute and finally the playing of taps. After the services at each of the cemeteries, the service was Rifle Salute at the Stone Church Cemetery repeated at the Veterans Memorial at the Finleyville Community Center.

That is the theme of the 2013 Relay For Life of Peters Township which will be held August 3 at Peters Township High School. This year’s event, which raises money for the American Cancer Society for research, education, advocacy and patient services, is sure to provide fun activities for all ages. The event starts at 8:00 a.m. with ceremonies at 12:00 noon. Teams will have sites set up along the walking area with carnival style and family friendly games and activities ... and plenty of food as well. New this year is Relay’s Got Talent, where singers, musicians and dancers will compete in three age categories - grades 4-8, high school age and adults - for top prizes. The contest starts at 3:00 p.m. and promises great entertainment for everyone. All events at Relay For Life of Peters Township are free and open to the public. The Luminaria Ceremony, which honors survivors and those who lost their battle with the disease, begins at 9:00 p.m. Luminaria may be purchased in advance and at the luminaria tent the day of the relay. Cost is $10 each. Pinwheels, which can hold up to six names honoring or remembering someone affected by cancer, are $20 each and are also available in advance or at the luminaria tent and will be displayed on the fence surrounding the track. Washington Symphony Performing This Summer at Two Area Festivals Although the regular concert season ended in May for the Washington Symphony Orchestra, the musicians are gearing up for special performances this summer in the area. The WSO will perform different concerts for two unique festivals – the Whiskey Rebellion Festival and the Washington Wine, Jazz and Pops Festival. The WSO has been invited for the third year to play at the opening of the annual Whiskey Rebellion Festival. Fans of patriotic music will enjoy the free WSO concert on Thursday, July 11 at 8 p.m. at the festival tent set up across from The Observer-Reporter on South Main Street in downtown Washington. According to conductor Yugo Ikach, “The WSO has great fun performing at the Whiskey Rebellion Festival and we're thrilled to be invited back. We plan to continue our opening night tradition of rousing music and great patriotic tunes so don't miss out! " The Sunday, August 4 performance of the WSO will start at 12:30 p.m. at North Strabane’s municipal park as part of the third annual Washington Wine, Jazz and Pops Festival. Elizabeth Township Historical Society Sponsoring Historic Tour to Ohio The Elizabeth Township Historical Society will sponsor an historic tour to the 1790-1815 Fair in New Boston, Ohio on August 30 - 31 and September 1. The authentic period fair at New Boston offers reenactments of a woodland Indian area, early American entertainment and crafts. The bus tour will feature lunch at Clifton Mill, a seven-story, water-powered gristmill; a tour of an 1839 stagecoach stop, an 1849 restored Greek revival mansion, the Johnny Appleseed museum and a vintage baseball game. “The tour allows people to step 200 years back in time at the 30th Annual Fair at New Boston. Everything about this quality event creates the illusion of time travel to 1790-1810,” said Carl Lander, Jr. chairman of ETHS board of directors who developed the tour and will serve as tour director. The historical reenactment includes a cannon salute to General George Rogers Clark riding into the fair, Daniel Boone and other frontier heroes. The Mad River Light Artillery sets up their six-pounder cannon for several firings. A battle restaged features militia on foot and horses, Shawnee warriors and British troops. NEWS FROM THE MID-MON VALLEY SHIPMATES The June meeting of the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates featured guest speaker Dr. J.K. Folmar, Professor Emeritus of History, at California University of Pennsylvania, and the president of the Monongahela River Buffs River Museum. Dr Folmar explained that the Mon River is 128 miles long and flows north from West Virginia and proceeded to give a history of the Mon from 1700 to now. Brownsville was the hub in western PA and the gateway to the west and travel was by flatboats, keelboats and then steamboats, with the railroads overtaking the boat travel by the 1850's. The annual Memorial Day parade was well represented by the Shipmates and we thank Myron Speitko, and James Caserta for their services, and the Shipmates who came out to take part in the parade. The social hall at St Anthony's Church in Monongahela has been reserved for Sunday, July 28 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Door prizes, bingo, and food to be catered by D&D of Arnold City. Cost to members and one guest is free, however, additional guests will be charged $10. Last year we had a big sheet cake, but this year, it's was suggested to the committee that we ask the attendees to bring in cookies, etc., for desserts. Also, please bring in a small gift to be awarded out during the bingo games. Wayne Vlasic gave his report on organizations that are considered worthy of receiving monetary gifts for the use of veterans. After reading of a list of said organizations, he recommended the Operation Troop Appreciation, located in the Century III Mall. Approximately 99.9% of money's collected goes to the cause. Wine, Jazz & Pops Festival III Set for Early August The Mental Health Association of Washington County presents "Wine, Jazz & Pops Festival III" on August 3 and 4. This year's festival will be held at a brand new location at North Strabane Municipal Park. Only minutes from Washington and 30 minutes from Pittsburgh or Wheeling. Located right off the intersection of Routes 19 and 519 South, this two year old park is an outdoor gem. The $9.5 million dollar facility offers festival goers not only a beautiful park atmosphere but the convenience of modern amenities. Festival attendees will have access to over 300 seats in sheltered pavilions as well as full-functioning restrooms and free paved parking for over 600 cars. Entertainment features local favorites plus national jazz recording artists. Cello Fury, Maureen Budway and Joy Ike will also entertain the festival goers that weekend. It’s a full schedule of first class performers. Eight wineries from Erie to the Allegheny National Forest to Greene County will be giving free-tastings of their fine vintages. Licensed counselors Lesa Vivio and Christina Pucel are taking a new approach to healing at their practice, WholeLife Counseling. Both hold a Master’s degree in Counseling and have a combined total of 22 years in social services and counseling. Now they are now bringing a collaboration of their private practices to the Mon Valley. They took a great deal of care and consideration when looking for a location for their offices. “Monongahela has done such an incredible job with promoting new small businesses and really being a friendly environment. It has a sort of familial, old school, small town community vibe.� Vivio said. Pucel added, “The Mon City just embraces anyone willing to come in and bring something to what they are already offering here.� This is their first time owning a business and running private practices together. Pucel said, “One of the things I like about private practice is the ability to manage your own caseload, really working with individuals that are a good fit for you.� Together they are dedicated to giving their clients a variety of techniques and skills to approach healing holistically. Individually, Ms. Pucel has worked extensively with families, children, and adolescents and Ms. Vivio has worked comprehensively with children and individuals suffering from traumatic injuries. She holds a certification as a Brain Injury Specialist. Even with their years of experience handling specialized cases they are reluctant to box themselves into one particular area of practice. “We like to serve a diverse population.� Pucel explained. Both women are passionate about the work they do and are excited about having the opportunity to help the residents of the Mon Valley and surrounding areas. Max & Erma’s Celebrates Grand Re-Opening in Peters Township By J.R. Brower
Good food and good times were the order of the day on Thursday, June 6 at Max and Erma’s in Peters Township. In coordination with the Peters Township Chamber of Commerce, the restaurant held a grand re-opening celebration attended by faithful customers, local government officials, township business owners, corporate management and local media. Despite stormy weather, live music was provided by the Peters Township High School Band who performed in the parking lot at 5:30 p.m. The ribboncutting ceremony took place at 6:00 p.m. Later, local singing duo Nick & Val performed at the newly renovated bar. A raffle was held and funds were raised to assist the always highly rated band and music program of Peters Township High School. Winners from the raffle received a year’s worth of free Max and Erma’s burgers as well as six tickets to this
summer’s Lynyrd Skynyrd concert. Attendees included Max and Erma, themselves, company President Steve Weis, Regional Manager Dave Booth, Vice-President Chris Meaker and General Manager Tom Horneman. Also participating in the festivities were Peters Township Manager Mike Silvestri, Peters Township Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Brian Schill and State Senator Matt Smith. Weis explained that the Peters Township Max and Erma’s is one of the more popular restaurants in the regional franchise that includes 76 restaurants in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Indiana, Missouri and South Dakota. “We thought the restaurant deserved a makeover, which included both extensive interior and exterior redesign,” Weis said. He enthusiastically pointed out the addition of the front sun room with fireplace and explained how interior walls were removed and partially recre-

The bar area was complete refurbished to include ornate woodwork, and tables were replaced with spacious booths to make diners more comfortable. “All in all, we spent about $250,000 for the complete renovations,” he said. All of the executives and restaurant employees that were interviewed agreed that the money was well-spent, and it appeared that the clientele present that evening were very happy with the new look and feel of the popular eating establishment.

The bride was given in marriage by her father, Raymond Kotecki of Finleyville and her mother, Wendy Kotecki of Eighty-Four. The bride’s childhood friend, Michelle Kabo of Canonsburg, served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were her friends Brittany Full of Mt. Lebanon and Cathy Rich of South Park. The bride’s grandparents are Mollie and the late Raymond Kotecki of Finleyville, and her late grandparents, Freda and Chuck Stang of Eighty-Four. The groom’s parents are Penny and the late Rick Romano of Van Voorhis. His grandparents are Virginia and Irving Miller of White Oak. Best man for his brother was Jeff Pastore of Mt. Pleasant. Groomsmen were his brother Ricky Romano of Jacksonville, NC, and friend Shawn Abram of Castle Shannon. The bride is a graduate of Canon-Mac High School; the groom is a graduate of Charleroi Area High School. The couple’s four sons, Noah 6, Aiden 3, Ethan 2, and Austin 9 months, were cute as buttons in their tuxedos. Flower girls were Addi Full and McKenna Adams. The newlyweds honeymooned at Sheraton Station Square in Pittsburgh and make their home in Finleyville.

Local Girls Vie for National American Miss Pennsylvania Crown Three local girls have been chosen as State Finalists in the National American Miss Pennsylvania Pageant to be held August 9 and 10 at the Hilton Harrisburg. The National American Miss Pageants are held for girls ages 4-18, and have five different age divisions. The winJada Jewel King ner of the Pageant will receive a Brianna Nicole Sobeck $1,000 case award, the official crown and banner, a banquet of roses, and air transportation to compete in the National Pageant in California where she will receive an exciting complimentary Tour of Hollywood and two V.I.P. tickets to Disneyland®. Summer Bennett, age 11 of McMurray, will compete in the pre-teen division. Summer attends McMurray Elementary and is in 5th Grade. Summer's activities include Girl Scouts, jazz and hip-hop dancing and cooking. She also enjoys spending time with family and friends, Summer Bennett movies, music and playing with her dog, Dallas. Jada Jewel King, age 10 of Canonsburg, will be participating in the 7-9 age division. Jada attends Allison Park Elementary and will be going into the 5th Grade in the Fall. Jada likes visiting the library, participating in volunteer opportunities, and dancing. She also enjoys singing, reading, arts and crafts, and baking cupcakes with her mom. Brianna Nicole Sobeck, age 8 of Jefferson Hills, will participate in the junior preteen division. Brianna is in the 3rd Grade at McClellan Elementary. Brianna's activities include Girl Scouts, competitive cheerleading and youth wrestling. Kelly Jones Receives Girl Scout Gold Award Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania is honored to present Kelly Jones with the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest recognition for achievement in Girl Scouting. Kelly, daughter of Chad and Vicki Jones is a Sophomore at Ringgold High School and also serves in a leadership position as Captain of the Color Guard in the Ringgold Marching Band. As a Girl Scout member for 11 years, Miss Jones is a Girl Scout Senior of Troop 54049 and supported in her Gold Award effort by Tracey Grandinette, Sherri Giovenello, and Tara Schmidt of the Ringgold Community. Her Gold Award project began in 2012 and was completed January. 2013. Kelly will graduate in 2015 and plans to go into Engineering.

The cornea is exquisitely sensitive, and this can cause significant tearing and pain along with corneal scarring and eventual permanent loss of vision. Both of these maladies can be fixed through a series of small concurrent procedures that more appropriately reposition the eyelid margin against the globe. These procedures take anywhere from 20-40 minutes and result in little post-operative pain or discomfort.
Q: What is a lower lid blepharoplasty? A: A bilateral lower lid blepharoplasty is a surgery to correct excessive skin drooping and fat prolapse under the eyes. The Girl Scout “Bronze Award” is the highest award a Girl Scout Junior can earn. This award recognizes the girls’ leadership and planning skills that are required to follow through with a project that makes a positive difference in their community. The members of Girl Scout Troop 50428 of West Jefferson Hills have earned this prestigious award for the work they have done for the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society. Members of this troop include; Katerina Vergallito, Ashley Werner, Erin Mykich, Julia Freedman and Annika Zangrilli. Their girls came up with several ideas for projects that could help make our world a better place but after much discussion the girls decided that they wanted to make a difference in the life of the shelter animals of the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society. They came up with the name “Project Paws and Claws” and decided that it would involve three specific parts; hosting a pet supply drive, making homemade cat nip sock toys and dog biscuits, and a tour and educational presentation at the Humane Society. They first organized and hosted the “Paws and Claws Pet Supply Drive”. The girls placed a collection bin at the Pleasant Hills Pet Hospital for one week. Their bin was overflowing with generous donations when they went to pick it up at the end of the week. Then on Saturday, June 15 the girls were stationed at the Pleasant Hills Fire Station to collect donations from the community. Next, the girls took toddler socks, cotton balls, cat nip and fabric markers and made a basket full of colorful cat toys for the furry residents of the Humane Society. They also got together to make and bake their own pumpkin flavored dog biscuits. The last part of their project was held on Tuesday, June 18 when the girls were hosted by Dara Krom, Director of Humane Education & Training at the North Shore Shelter in downtown Pittsburgh. The girls were treated to an educational presentation on the history and current workings of the Humane Society. They also had the opportunity to meet the cats who reside there and personally share the cat nip toys they made for them. This experience and successful completion of their Bronze Award is something that the girls of Girl Scout Troop 50428 will never forget. As the premier leadership experience for girls in the United States, Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Allergies, Bugs and Ticks, Oh My! Healthy Directions in Finleyville is a "Sight for Sore Eyes" It is that time a year again, when the smallest things become your biggest worries. Healthy Directions in the Finleyville Giant Eagle can help you cope with some of the irritating signs of summer such as allergies and insects, so that you can focus on the fun in the sun. Healthy Directions medical staff has been seeing a steady flow of allergy patients. Since the weather has been on rollercoaster this season, pollen count is at an all-time high. “This allergy season has been tough on patients,” said Michelle Antanovich, CRNP, clinical lead at Healthy Directions. “Patients are scared. Some have lost their voices due to a sore throat and some are coming in thinking they contracted strep throat. It is simply allergies due to postnasal drip, which is a common symptom for allergies.” Healthy Directions offers ways to help with allergies such as taking medicines, using nasal sprays and rinsing out your nose. Allergy shots can also help prevent sensitivity and offers long time relief from allergy symptoms. Another worry during the sunny season is not “the bug but the bite.” Spiders, ticks, bees and other insects are a problem during this time of year. Other cases involve bee stings and insect bites that lead to allergic reactions also known as anaphylactic shock. Most patients receive treatment for anaphylaxis with the use of an autoinjector that contains epinephrine. The patients are also issued EpiPens for future risks of a severe allergic reaction. Another summer bummer and one of the scariest insects are ticks. Ticks are insects that feed off of hosts such as human and animals. They carry life threatening diseases such as Lyme’s disease. A tick bite can cause rashes and swelling in the affected area. The bite could look like a bulls-eye or bruising around the area, depending on skin pigment. Some of the symptoms of a bite are fever, headaches, and flu like symptoms. Ticks are the trickiest insect to remove because there is a specific technique that avoids diseases and other
dangerous infections. If a person encounters a tick on their body, they should do the following: • Wear disposable gloved and grasp the tick with tweezers, applying steady pressure, do not twist and be sure to pull slowly. • If you are unsuccessful in removing the tick or the head of the tick, receive medical attention immediately. • Do not try to burn the tick off • Do not apply nail polish or petroleum jelly on the tick • Place tick in a sealable container for analysis • Wash bite mark with soap and water and apply antibiotic ointment. • Monitor site often for at least two weeks Insects and allergies can put a damper on your summer fun. The annoying itchy bites and the risks of allergic reactions can stop you from enjoying the nice weather. Luckily, there are places such as Healthy Directions to help treat you and have you going in the right direction to a fun filled season. You can also prevent some of these occurrences by making sure to wear protective repellent against insects and bugs and try to keep sweet foods inside. Be sure to carry an epinephrine kit in case of an emergency. To protect against allergies, take prescribed medication or get allergy shots as often as needed. Most importantly, try to wear proper and protective clothing while being outdoors. These simple preventions will help keep you and your family on track

Monongahela Valley Hospital Offers Latest Techniques in Cardiac Catheterization It’s been said that the best way to have a good life is to have a good heart. While this phrase can be interpreted to mean the emotional heart, when people suffer from physical heart problems, they can experience chest pain; palpitations commonly known as racing of the heart; shortness of breath; a chronic cough; and excessive sweating — all symptoms that can place limitations on their activities and ultimately reduce their quality of life. Through the use of cardiac catheterization, physicians can learn about the heart and blood vessels to diagnose and treat a host of cardiac problems and diseases. Millions of cardiac catheterization procedures have been performed since the technique was introduced in the mid-20th century. Since that time, the femoral artery in the groin has been the primary entry point for a thin tube that uses the circulatory system to clear blockages, deliver medication and position stents. Approximately 10 percent of the medical centers in the United States, including Monongahela Valley Hospital, have expanded their cardiac catheterization procedures to include the radial artery, located in the wrist, as an entry point to the circulatory system. John Pacella, M.D., a cardiologist affiliated with Monongahela Valley Hospital whose specialty is interventional cardiology, recently explained the benefits of the radial approach. “The femoral artery can be difficult to access in some individuals — particularly those who are overweight,” said

Dr. Pacella. “Patients who undergo the radial technique have less bruising and bleeding, fewer complications and faster recoveries. In fact, it’s more comfortable for the patients because they can sit up immediately after the procedure.” By offering the radial catheterization, MVH provides a procedure that is largely available only at larger metropolitan hospitals. Residents of the midMonongahela Valley and surrounding areas can have the procedure performed in familiar surroundings by medical professionals that they know and trust. Snap Fitness Introduces “Fitness on Demand” By Colette Dell
Snap Fitness, located in Champion Plaza in South Park, recently introduced “Fitness on Demand,” a new approach to exercise. Fitness on Demand allows members of Snap Fitness to train with a trainer in person or via video at any time of day. A member simply uses a touch-screen to check for scheduled workouts with a live trainer, or if there are no scheduled workouts at the time, they can choose to exercise with a video, projected on a large screen. This provides a continuous opportunity to workout with a trainer. “Our members can take a workout class, twenty-four hours a day,” said Barb Devine, General Manager of Snap Fitness. Yoga, Pilates, cycling, kickboxing, and circuit training are just some of the classes offered on Fitness on Demand. The live classes are held by one of Snap’s fitness trainers, each having a scheduled night of the week to lead a class. Classes are lead by Bethany Higginbotham, Lynn Sambuco, Tom Byard, Dan Tonini, and Tracy Steinhaus. Kelly Harmer, a member of Snap Fitness, enjoys using this new workout program and she likes the space she has in the new room Snap added since they’ve started Fitness on Demand. The new exercise room has also enabled Snap to host classes for its members who are senior citizens. These classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. Seniors can obtain a membership at Snap through their health insurance. “Anyone who has the Silver Sneakers or Silver and Fit are eligible to have a membership at Snap,” Devine said. Franciscan Spirit and Life Center Announces Summer Tai Chi Classes Wellness of the spirit, mind and body is the mission of the Franciscan Spirit and Life Center, which recently announced their schedule for summer Tai Chi classes. Beginning on June 17, the Center will host Tai Chi classes on Monday evenings and Wednesday afternoons for both beginners and continuing students. After much planning and work, the Peters Township Parks and Recreation department officially opened a new unique Fitness Trail in Peterswood Park at a special ribbon-cutting ceremony held on June 20. The Fitness Trail, which begins up the hill behind the Recreation Center, consists of 18 exercise stations along the walking trial which loops around and eventually hooks up with Arrowhead Trail down through the woods next to the park. Special signs mark each Fitness Trail station as follows: 1. Hamstring Stretch, 2. Balance Beam, 3. Chin Up/Hip Rotation, 4. Body Curl, 5. Vault Bar, 6. Leg Lift, 7. Hyperextension Bench, 8. Push Up, 9. Step Up, 10. Vertical Climb, 11. Hip Rotation/Chin Up, 12. Horizontal Ladder, 13. Beam Jump, 14. Stretch Squat, 15. Sit Up, 16. Dip Station, 17. Parellel Bars and 18. Jump Up. At the ribbon-cutting, Parks and Recreation Board member Dorothy Schwerha said, “Like everyone else, I am really happy this has happened, and it will truly benefit many residents.” Peters Township Parks and Recreation Director Michele Harmel said, “Thanks to Council and the Parks and Recreation Board, the Fitness Trail happened pretty quickly.” Township Manager Michael Silvestri said that the township saved a lot of money by having the Public Works Department install the fitness equipment rather than hiring an outside contractor to do the work. Council member James Berquist said, “Congratulations to everyone who had a part in this. Of course you can still join us every Sunday morning in the summer at 10:00 am for our traditional Worship Service. Now the other option will be Thursday evening’s service, a more contemporary touch, with the same great music, the same great message, and the new date and time. Summer Events at Peters Creek Baptist Church Peters Creek Baptist Church in South Park has announced the following upcoming events: Moore Cookies Please! - a fundraiser for the tornado relief efforts in Oklahoma. Kathlene & Lauren Wholey will be selling cookies with the proceeds going to the tornado relief efforts in Oklahoma. Vacation Bible School: Wild West Rodeo Camp will be held from Monday July 22Friday July 26 from 6:30-9:00 pm. The camp is open to preschoolers who have turned 3 years old to completed Kindergarten. This week long program will blend Bible teaching with music, food, crafts and rodeo event training. Three and four year olds must be accompanied by a parent. Area Church News..Area Church News Monongahela Will Host “Praise & Worship in the Park” 2013 The sounds of praise and music will once again echo through Chess Park in Monongahela when that community celebrates with the 8th annual “Praise and Worship in the Park,” on Saturday, August 10 beginning at 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m.. A number of area churches, ministries and non-profit organizations will join together for this day of praise, music, and fellowship. A variety of activities are planned, including all-day musical performances, children activities, and food and informational booths. Musicians scheduled to appear, beginning at Noon, include but not limited to: Journey by Grace Praise Band, , Shepherds Voice, 1st Christian Church Praise team,. JD Davenport. and 70x7. Seniors for Safe Driving presents highway safety education programs for Seniors 55 years of age and older. The highway safety programs are certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The successful completion of the program makes seniors eligible for a 5 percent discount on their automobile insurance premiums, across the board, for a period of three years. The discount is mandated by Pennsylvania state law. If you have never participated in a Senior Driving Program before, you must attend a two day program.
