Join the Brigade for Kayla Rush Bracelets Help to Raise Funds for Pleasant Hills Girl Pleasant Hills and its surrounding communities have been actively raising funds for a very special young resident, Kayla Rush, who is battling a rare form of bone cancer. Her friend, Missy Wagner, is joining the crusade and has designed bracelets that she and other supporters, including Zion Lutheran Church’s Youth Director Terry Riesen, will sell. “Kayla is a very special, brave girl that so many people admire in this community,” said Wagner. “Kayla is my best little buddy in this world and a hero in my eyes.” Wagner believes that by purchasing and wearing the blue (Kayla’s favorite color) bracelets with a paw print on them (to show her love for animals), the community can not only help raise additional funds but show their undying support. The bracelets, which say “Kayla’s Brigade” in yellow (for bone cancer awareness) are $2 each and all proceeds will benefit Kayla and her family, who are facing challenging medical costs. Wagner is hoping that everyone attending Pleasant Hills Community Day in August will wear one. To buy bracelets, contact Missy Wagner at 412-655-8288 or Terry Riesen at Zion Lutheran Church at 412-881-5512. If anyone or any groups are interested in helping to sell the bracelets, they are available.

Many important events in the history of our nation took place in western Pennsylvania—perhaps none more important than the events of the Whiskey Rebellion. Join the members of the Oliver Miller Homestead Association on Sunday, July 18, as they commemorate the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 with activities that focus on the Miller family’s involvement in this historic event. Activities at the Homestead include a short skit entitled “Serving the Writ,” which will be performed at 2:00 and at 3:00 p.m. The original Miller family still and informative displays will be found in the barn, and the process and economics of making whiskey will be discussed. The Whiskey Rebellion was the first test of the unity and strength of the federal government. The Western Insurrection, as it is sometimes called, was about a people who felt they were being treated unfairly and who had been practically forgotten by the federal government until it was time to collect the nation’s first excise tax—a cash tax they were expected to pay with money they didn’t have. Members of the Miller family were participants in the tensions of the time, and a grandson of the original Oliver was the first person killed in the conflict. The Oliver Miller Homestead, a historic landmark and Whiskey Rebellion site, is located in South Park. For more information, visit www.olivermiller.org or call 412-835-1554.
