Peters Township Resident Questions Integrity of Licensure Board Dear Editor, In 2009, J.R. Brower wrote a story about me that spoke of my goal to become a licensed architect. After completing the requirements, the PA Architects Licensure Board has denied me to take the Architects Registration Exam, the last hurdle for me to become licensed. I'd like to share this update to my story because I believe the public has the right to know that 1.) Licensure Law excludes Residential Projects and 2.) The PA Architects Board is a group of 5 practicing architects who if I became licensed would be my competition and 3.) All services I provide meet PA building codes. For the PA Architects to deny me to take the final test is to prevent me from becoming competition to other architects. I'd be interested to know what the public thinks about being forced to use the services of a group of professionals whose fees are being protected by the State. If I took the test and passed I would become an immediate competitor to other architects whereby I could provide services at a greatly reduced rate for the same services. William May - Peters Township

2nd Annual “Tea for Jacob” a Great Success By Christina Walko

A packed crowd filled the halls of Mary Mother of the Church in Charleroi on Saturday April 13 as the 2nd Annual “Tea for Jacob” got underway. The event, which honors 8 year old Jacob Broznick, from Pleasant Hills, who is autistic, was started last year by Jacob’s grandmother and Charleroi resident Angie Dzurinko. Autism now affects one in 88 children in the U.S. The colorfully decorated hall boasted plentiful food, sweets, gifts, raffles, auc- Eight year-old Jacob Broznick was the guest of tion items and smiles to go around. honor at the 2nd annual “Tea for Jacob” The event, which last year had about 100 people in attendance, doubled in size this year with its goal being to raise more than $7,000 for Autism Speaks. “We should reach that easily,” stated Jacob’s mother, Becky Broznick. Broznick, who is a teacher in the Charleroi school district, her husband Bill and son Jacob who is autistic, reside in Pleasant Hills. Plenty of teachers were in attendance. “Its overwhelming for Jacob,” she said, “but he loves when everyone applauds him.” Pictured at the event are Jacob's mother, Gift and toy baskets, including Steeler Becky Broznick (left) and and Penguin themed, Hello Kitty and grandmother Angie Dzurinko (right). Mickey Mouse, stationary and body lotions, were all donated by those in attendance. Show Off Your Dog in the Monongahela Pooch Parade Monongahela will be the place to be for dogs lovers on May 18. What better way to spend a spring morning than with your four legged friend? Whether you are a dog owner or admirer, The Susan Withers Pooch Parade will be the site for fun, laughs and plenty of woof woof woofs. This year we are honoring its founder Susan Wither's, who as a past MARC member, was instrumental in developing the parade out of her love of dogs and all animals. The Parade event consists of registration at Chess Park in Monongahela (gazebo) at 10 am. There will be a $5 fee to enter your dog which will help MARC fund other activities and events throughout the year. The parade will officially begin at 11 am continuing down Main St. and ending at the Aquatorium. This will give the dogs and owners the chance to show off their stuff! At the Aquatorium, MARC has a lineup of activities and entertainment to make for a beautiful afternoon. First off, you'll want to try MARC's Gourmet Hot Dog's for lunch with a ton of choices as toppings! Then you can take some time to wander through a variety of dog related vendors and businesses that cater to your furry friend. Then, let the show begin! MARC has invited interesting guest speakers to educate and enlighten all dog owners and potential owners about owning and caring for your cherished pet. We'll round out the day with prizes for many categories such as smallest/biggest dog, funniest, stupid pet trick, dog that looks most like owner, etc. Check out our posters throughout the valley with a full listing of participants or call 724-258-3485 for more info. PennDOT Begins Planning for Rankintown Bridge Replacement By Paul Chasko

After years of badgering and pleading for PennDOT to replace the single-lane Rankintown Bridge between Union and Peters Townships on State Route SR1006, the project is now underway. The old Rankintown Bridge carrying traffic over Peters Creek in Union Township has been a traffic bottle-neck worsening every year as traffic increases between Peters Township and Union Westbound Traffic pile-up Township. The bridge is one way and drivers line up at either end of the bridge during peak traffic hours taking turns to cross over. In addition, the bridge has no pedestrian walkway. It is dangerous as well as inconvenient. It is not uncommon during rush hour to see aggravated drivers 25 to 30 cars deep piled up on both sides of the bridge waiting for their turn to cross over. Access to the bridge by emergency vehicles at rush hour is also a problem. Officials from both Peters and Union Townships have been petitioning PennDOT and our State repEastbound traffic pile-up resentatives to replace the structure for years. A representative from PennDOT said that the project had been funded only for preliminary engineering work and that actual construction could be as long as two years down the road. More details on the extent of the intrusion onto adjacent properties and any construction schedule will be unavailable until the preliminary engineering is completed and reviewed. Then the project will need to be budgeted and scheduled for detailed engineering and construction. It sounds as though we’ll be taking turns to cross the Rankintown Bridge for a bit longer. There will be a public meeting advertised and hosted by PennDOT on their plans to replace the bridge. It will be held at the Union Twp. Municipal Building on May 22nd . PennDOT has asked for the space between 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm.

Let's Talk Real Estate by ROGER DOLANCH Broker/Owner

Buyer Negotiating Tips So, you search high and low and finally settle on the house you want to call home! You sit down with your real estate agent and hammer out the fine points of the deal. All of the required paperwork to make the offer is prepared. Your agent presents your offer to the seller, and... oh no! Your offer’s been rejected! Try to keep your emotions in check. In fact, it is rare for any first offer to be accepted in its entirety. Upon receiving your offer, the seller is faced with three options: Accept An accepted offer means the seller has agreed to all the terms and conditions, exactly as set forth in your offer to purchase. Congratulations! You are on your way to buying a home. Reject A rejected offer means the seller did not agree with any of

the terms and conditions set forth in your offer to purchase. Counter-offer A counter offer means the seller agrees with some of the terms and conditions of your offer, but not all of them. The seller thus makes a counter offer to you. The counter offer may change the price or closing date, or add or remove conditions. If you have received a counter offer, you have three choices. You can accept the new terms and conditions, reject them outright (and look for another house), or you can work with the seller to establish mutually agreeable terms. Unless the seller is being extremely unreasonable, you will likely choose the latter. It’s time to negotiate, and here’s how: Choose your battles wisely You may fancy yourself the Donald Trump of residential real estate, but do you really want to jeopardize the whole sale by haggling over the inclusion of comparatively insignificant items like a used washing machine? Save your enthusiasm for the issues that matter most. Keep it real The terms of the purchase have a much greater chance of being accepted if your offer is grounded in real market conditions, and not in the fantasy of getting something for nothing. Remember, the seller may be considering other offers. Bid too low and you risk losing the house to another buyer. Your CENTURY 21 Frontier Realty sales professional can help you determine just how much is appropriate to bid based on real market research. Be a lover, not a fighter There is no doubt that the give and take of negotiation can frazzle the nerves. But becoming combative when you hear something you don’t like won’t get you any closer to owning

CENTURY 21 – Frontier Realty Agent of the Month CENTURY 21 Frontier Realty was pleased to present Joyce Hann with a Silver Production Plaque for 2012. the home. Quite to the contrary. Remember the saying “you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar”? A few pointers: Be polite and collaborative in any dealings with the seller or his real estate agent. Let the seller know you hear and understand their issues. Be respectful when disagreeing with or rejecting terms. Try to communicate your own wishes clearly. Be patient and helpful when misunderstandings do crop up. Know when to hold ‘em (and when to fold ‘em) Prepare for negotiations ahead of time by knowing which terms of the deal you can compromise on, and which terms are deal-breaking must-haves. Ensure your priorities are communicated clearly, and don’t be tempted to exaggerate your position. This is no time for bluffing, lest your bluff be called. And remember, negotiation is all about give and take, so expect to make some concessions. By establishing your position in advance, you’ll be able to handle a little of the give painlessly and with certainty. Know when to walk away It is unlikely that you and the seller will be unable to come to mutually acceptable terms, but you have to prepare yourself for that eventuality. If it ultimately becomes clear that the seller will never budge on terms you consider important (no matter how long talks extend), it is time move on. And you never know, sometimes just being prepared to walk away is what it takes to jar a stubborn seller into abandoning that firm position. Masquerade Bowl Fundraiser for Autism Connection of PA and Caste Family Fund By Colette Dell

On April 20, the third annual Masquerade Bowl for autism took place at the Princess Lanes by Caste Village. For the past two years, Tom Caste, president of commercial realestate for Caste Village, and the Autism Connection of PA have teamed up for this event. Tickets to the event were $25 each, which included complimentary drinks, New Orleans style foods, bowling, music and dancing. There was also a Chinese auction and various raffles. Caste became involved with the Autism Connection of PA after his son was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. Soon after the diagnosis, the Caste Family Fund, a donor advised fund under the Pittsburgh Foundation, was started in order to give back to organizations such as Autism Connection. “I raise money for them because they helped families like us,” Caste said of the Autism Connection. Lu Randall, executive director of the Autism Connection of PA gave her thoughts on Caste’s fundraising. “He is very gracious and the families are very grateful for the support,” Randall said. This event has raised over $10,000 over the past two years and the number of attendees seems to keep growing.

Regular attendee of the event and general manager of Princess Lanes, Bruce Wright, said that this year was the best turnout he had seen since the Masquerade Bowl began and he hopes this event has continued success, bringing awareness to autism. Marie Mambuca, the Family Support Coordinator for Autism Connection, who started out as a member of the group, has a 21 year-old son with autism She says fundraisers like this “help immensely” for autism support and research. Although autism has many challenges, not everyone who is diagnosed with it see it as something that conquers them. Robert Hester, who does the photography for the event every year, has had autism for 30 years and believes that if it weren’t for his condition, he would not have the same creative edge in photography that he has, today. “I consider myself a true victor, not victim of this diagnosis,” Hester said.

Monongahela Library Director Elina Filander (left) accepts a check from Dorothy Jackson and Ruth Burnett of the Memory Tree and Yarn Branch

The Monongahela Area Library recently was the beneficiary of a $1,000 donation from a raffle conducted by Ruth Burnett and her mother, Dorothy Jackson, the proprietors of the Memory Tree and Yarn Branch. A handsome handmade color block afghan was raffled by the pair at their Chess Street shop to support the local library located only a few blocks away. Loretta Flament of Monongahela was the winner of the warm and cozy prize which had been made by Ruth Burnett. Burnett noted that, “the town had been unbelievably generous” in purchasing tickets. While the library sold some tickets, the mother-daughter pair

had even gone from business to business in the final days of the raffle to ensure a sellout. Library Director Elina Filander commented, “We were all so touched and surprised that Ruth and Dorothy did this for the library. We very much appreciate their hard work.” The director also noted the Chamber of Commerce had been great in making sure the word got out to businesses that this was going on. While they had never done anything like this before at the yarn and knitting supply store, Burnett felt that as “a big believer in the library” it was a worthy effort.

TIME IS YOUR ENEMY AND YOUR HOME VIDEO MEMORIES ARE AT RISK! Q: HOW LONG WILL MY VIDEOTAPES LAST? A: Videotapes were designed to only last 10-15 years. The longer a videotape is not played, the greater the chance it will loose it’s signal. Q: IF I HAVE MY TAPES CONVERTED TO DVD, WILL DVDs BE AROUND IN 20 YEARS? A: Yes, DVDs are the best way to preserve your home videotapes. DVDs are only going to get better and will last much longer than any videotape. Q: CAN ANYTHING DAMAGE A DVD? A: Yes. If a DVD becomes scratched or broken, it can no longer be played. Protect your DVDs and they will last longer than anything right now. Q: SHOULD I PUT MY VIDEOTAPES ON BLU-RAY? A: No. Putting an analog video tape to Blu-Ray will not improve the quality. Blu-Ray was mainly designed for Hollywood movies.

The L.M. Frye Funeral Home was founded by Lewis Morrison Frye, Sr. and has continuously served the families of the Mon Valley area for the past ninety six years. The funeral home was established in 1917 in the two hundred block of West Main Street in Monongahela. In 1928, L.M. Frye, Sr. purchased a home from C.B. Wood, MD at 427 W. Main Street and designed the first floor to be a funeral home while using the second floor as his residence. Mr. Frye, along with his son, Lewis Morrison Frye, Jr. worked together until his death in 1963. L.M. Frye, Jr. and his son, Patrick R. Frye carried on the business until his father retired in 1990. Patrick was the third generation owner until he decided to sell the family business and move to Florida to be with his ailing father in 2007. At that time, Pamela F. DeRose purchased the funeral home from Patrick Frye. Pamela has been with the funeral home since 1986. The Frye Funeral Home and it’s experienced staff is prepared to serve at-need or pre-need families with their arrangements in a courteous and sensitive manner. We are available by appointment to discuss pre-need options such as irrevocable burial trusts or insurance based funding. We offer traditional funeral services, with or without viewing, immediate burial and cremations. Our goal is to personalize every funeral and to accommodate your final wishes and requests. Frye Funeral Home would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for being recognized for our services and professionalism and chosen as business of the month. Washington County Strives for Gender Diversity Across Boards of Directors Local Businesses Surveyed; Provided with Guidelines for More Diverse Boards In 2010, the Women and Girls Foundation of Southwestern Pennsylvania began exploring gender diversity among publically traded businesses in Allegheny County. The project was started in part because 40% of every higher education graduating class nationally is female. In order to attract and retain top tier female professionals to our region, it is critical that women see themselves reflected in corporate and government leadership. The Leadership Washington County Class 11 took this program and applied it to a survey conducted in Washington County. Leadership Washington County is an 8-monthlong training program for professionals living and or working in Washington Co. The program is designed to help participants gain a broad spectrum of issues affecting the county and in turn foster leadership, commitment and active participation in the community. Each class is required to complete a project. The Leadership Washington Co. Class 11 began its survey among the top 50 employers in the county, including for profit and non-profit businesses. The focus of the project was to join in movement towards making Board selections more inclusive, transparent and diverse. Of the top 50 employers, 19 were eliminated because they are headquartered out of state or have no Board. Another 3 did not respond, leaving a total of 28 businesses. Added to that were 9 government agencies for a total of 37 surveyed/participating boards. The sampling of survey participants well represented the county and included financial institutions, service and hospitality, transportation, education, social services, manufacturing, and government and public administration. In addition to gender questions, each Board was asked for num-

bers pertaining to race, age and method of appointment. Information compiled from the survey showed that women represent 26% of the Boards of Directors of participating business and agencies. This is where the Leadership Washington County Class 12 has come in. Taking the information gathered by the previous class, the group is hoping to create awareness and spark change across the county. The members of the Leadership Class 12 divided the list of Boards who participated in the survey into two categories, those with at least 25% female representation and those without. Following that, letters of recommended “Best Practices” were sent to each business or agency asking that each Board consider adopting the following in regards to diversity in general: (1) Institute a two- or three-year term of service and a minimum of consecutive terms each board member may serve with an option to be reappointed or re-elected after a specific amount of time off the Board. (2) Based on Board size, maintain a 20% minority population. (3) Based on Board size, maintain an age range that represents all ages served by the business with at least one person representing ages 3039, 40-49, 50-59 & 60+. “We believe following these guidelines would allow Boards of Directors an opportunity to view a more current take on how their organization truly affects their community as well as assist the county in retaining professional women, which can lead to stronger family units, better performance in schools and an overall increase in pride of community,” said Angel Gulick, Mon Valley YMCA Program Director and Leadership Class 12 participant. “What better place to start than with the Boards whose decisions affect our communities the most?”

Local Girl Scout Educates Local Youth About Environmental Stewardship On April 6, local Girl Scout Jesse Hinkle, in partnership with Waste Management of Western Pennsylvania, held a recycling rally for residents in Jefferson Hills. The Recycling Rally, which took place just a few weeks before Earth Day, provided local residents and youth with information about recycling, games, prizes, and a 360 degree tour of a Waste Management Recycling truck. Youth were invited to participate in a recycled art contest, which encouraged them to make something out of materials that can be recycled. Eagle Scout Candidate Takes on St. Francis Cemetery By Paul Chasko

Boy Scout Luke Baldesburger is an Eagle Scout candidate with Scout Troop 1452 of Finleyville. As his Eagle Project he has been approved to take the leading role in cleaning up St. Francis Cemetery Just outside of Gastonville off Stone Church Road. The work crew pose for a quick photo! There are sure to be many folks reading this that probably aren’t aware that St. Francis Church has a Cemetery. Here’s a bit of history. Prior to 1907, St. Francis of Assisi Church was located on Stone Church Road Just outside of Gastonville. The Parish purchased property across the road from the church for a cemetery. This Church was severely damaged by fire and the parish moved into their new church on Washington Avenue in Finleyville also Ron Broglie runs his tractor and brush hog in 1907 – the cemetery, of course through the shrubbery. remained in its original location. It is marked by a small sign on Stone Church Road. Over the years, sad to say, the battle between encroachment of vegetation and maintenance was being lost. Recently Father Boyle requested that the Knights of Columbus do a major cleanup of the St. Francis Cemetery grounds. Through the efforts of Grand Knight/Scout Leader Frank Kovscek, Scout Luke Baldesburger was given the opportunity to take the lead in the cleanup as his Eagle Scout Project. The work began on Saturday April 20. Luke is receiving assistance from his fellow scouts, members of the Knights of Columbus Council 13832 (St. Francis Church) and Several St. Francis Parishioners operating chain saws and heavy equipment. Ron Broglie showed up with his tractor equipped with a hydraulic front–loader and brush hog that saved a lot of back-breaking work. Many old graves that had limited access due to the encroachment of trees and shrubbery were made accessible and several large dead or dying trees were cut down and removed. More work remains. Luke chose a pretty tough Eagle Scout Project.

The Bible Chapel Set to Host First Annual Senior Fair in McMurray The Bible Chapel will host the first annual SageWorks Senior Information Fair on Saturday, May 4 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center at the South Hills campus at 300 Gallery Drive (just off Route 19 near the KIA dealership) in McMurray. Exhibitors at the Senior Fair will provide information on many aspects of the senior lifestyle. Local businesses range from information and referral sources to senior living, home care, and health care options. “Soon after beginning SageWorks, The Bible Chapel’s ministry to older adults, 55 and up, last year I quickly realized the huge need for information and resources to help older adults make decisions about this stage of life,” says Pastor Wayne Johnson. “The myriad of financial, legal, health, medical, and living issues and options that will be faced sooner or later can be overwhelming. The Senior Information Fair is our first step in meeting this need in the church as well as in the community.” The organizers of the Senior Information Fair hope that attendees will get connected to services they need right away, learn about services or resources they may need down the road, and that local senior services have an opportunity to network and partner with each other to better serve the local community’s senior population. West Penn Outpatient will be offering some free health screenings. Admission is free and open to the public. Stop by to pick up information for yourself, friends or your loved ones. Refreshments will be available for purchase. If you are a senior service provider and wish to attend as an exhibitor, please contact The Bible Chapel or the media contacts below as soon as possible. ASK the

EXPERTS PAIN MANAGEMENT Q: What is sciatica?

A: Sciatica is actually a misnomer. The correct term is radiculopathy or raducilits. In this condition a disc in the cervical (neck) or lumbar (back) spine is bulged or herniated and irritates a spinal nerve. This will lead to symptoms such pain, numbness and/or weakness. The symptoms are will generally be in the neck, back, arm or leg.

Q: What causes a disc to bulge or herniate?

A: There are many causes from a motor vehicle accident to Justin Petrolla MD lifting too heavy of an object but generally there is not a specific cause. A simple activity such as getting up out of chair or lifting a pencil could be the event prior to a disc herniating. The saying, “the straw that broke the camels back” fits pretty well here. Q: How is a disc bulge or herniation diagnosed?

A: An appropriate physical exam by your physician can generally identify if there you are suffering for a radiculopathy. Many other conditions can mimic a radiculopathy for a shoulder injury to carpal tunnel syndrome so imaging is sometimes necessary. To accurately identify the discs a MRI is imaging of choice. Q: How is a radiculopathy treated?

A: The mainstay of treatment is physical therapy. Core (abdominal) and lumbar strengthening are emphasized. Medications used include medrol dose back (stersoid), muscle relaxants and pain medications. An epidural steroid preformed with x-ray guidance can also be used if necessary. If conservative treatment fails then a surgical consultation can be ordered. Total treatment is available in the Mon Valley. Just ask your physician for a referral to the orthopedic group (TOG). APPLIANCES Q: Why Should I Buy A Weber Gas Grill? A: The answer extends beyond gas grills to cars, toys, electronics, homes and anything else with a use or exchange value. Quality. Weber balances quality with price and personal accommodations like size, features, color, etc. Many customers walk into Highway Appliance and declare "I want a Weber grill." When asked, most do not know the models, sizes, features or colors available nor what they would prefer if availability were not an issue. This is because Weber branding has become synony"Pothole" Highway Appliances mous with reliable quality and service. Any Weber grill owner who has decided to save a few dollars on a new grill by buying the ever-changing models at the local Big Box store quickly realizes the huge difference in value that a few extra dollars buys. What is it worth to save one hundred dollars if eight months later the ignitor breaks -- and the replacement part does not exist? Every replacement part of a Weber gas grill can be changed and Weber rewards dealers who make repair parts available at the retail level. Weber has been manufacturing barbeque grills for several decades and they never branched off into making tents, lamps or jackets. All they make is BBQ grills and grilling tools, books and accessories. Caring about the food you cook on your Weber is not a marketing gimmick because Weber is a true barbeque company. All they make is BBQ grills and they do it great. Service partners, like Highway Appliance, are set up to provide warranty service on-site for immediate repair of any problem experienced with Weber grill parts. Mon Valley Hospital's “Healthy Directions” Offers Skilled Health Care for Area Residents By Paul Chasko

Registered Nurse Practitioner Michelle Antonovich is concerned that many area residents are unaware of the services offered by the “Healthy Directions” facility located in the Finleyville Giant Eagle. So she was more than willing to stop in at the April NNCW meeting to give a short presentation and answer questions from a nice crowd of Neighbor to Neighbor Community Watch regulars. “I personally visited the facility last fall. I’d been bothered by an irritating eye infection. After an examination and discussion in a private and nicely equipped examining room, the nurse thought I’d picked up the infection rub-

bing my eyes while working in the garden. After being chastised for rubbing my itchy eyes with less than clean hands, I was given instructions for using a prescription medication that was already being prepared in the pharmacy next door. The trip was quick, effective and cost less than a doctor visit or a trip to the hospital emergency room and, I received follow-up calls to check on my condition. This pretty much fit the “Healthy Directions” treatment niche - “Convenient, Walk-in Diagnosis and Treatment for Common NonUrgent Illnesses.” Healthy Directions is staffed by Registered Nurse Practitioners (RNP’s) from Monongahela Valley Hospital working under the direction of MVH

physicians. A basic visit is $59.00 and most major insurances are accepted. Nurse Antonovich explained that the range of services provided includes: • Evaluation and Treatment (of a wide range of common illnesses – children over 18 months of age.) • Physical Exams (required exams for adults and children) • Vaccines ( for many illnesses) • On-site Diagnostic Testing • Laboratory Testing ( full service blood draw center) • Education and Screening ( free blood pressure screenings on request) Healthy Directions is a smart stop for health issues not requiring a trip to the hospital emergency room. For individuals and families not under the care of a

physician “Healthy Directions” may be a perfect solution for your occasional health needs. Just walk into the Finleyville Giant Eagle, turn left and walk to the other end of the building. Go to www.mvhhealthydirections.com for more information or call 724-3486699. If your health issue is more serious, the RNP will arrange that you’re seen at an urgent health care center.

Home & Garden Container Gardening: Choosing The Right Plant For The Pot Twenty-one million households are planting container gardens. It saves space, helps control pests and overcome soil issues, and lets you enjoy fresh, homegrown produce without a yard. To ensure your success, it’s important to pick the right plant for the pot. Fortunately, seed companies are developing vegetable seeds well adapted for container gardens. “Today’s container gardeners now have access to even more plants that are compact in size, yield more, taste great and feature unique colors and shapes,” said John Marchese of Seminis Home Garden seed. To help you get started, consider these tips from experts at the University of Illinois Extension:

Choosing a Container • Anything that holds soil and has drainage holes in the bottom may be transformed into a container garden for terrestrial plants. • For vibrant plant growth, the containers must provide adequate space for roots and soil media.

Soil • Soils for containers need to be well aerated and well drained while still being able to retain enough moisture. • Never use garden soil by itself for container gardening. • Containers often use soilless or artificial media that contain no soil at all. • When mixes are used, they should be moistened slightly before planting. Fill a tub with the media, add water and

lightly fluff the media to dampen it. • When filling containers with media, don’t fill the pot to the top. Leave about a one-inch space from the top and rim.

Fertilizer • A regular fertilizer program is needed to keep plants growing well. • The choice of fertilizer analysis will depend on the plants. High-nitrogen sources would be good for plants grown for their foliage while flowering and vegetable crops prefer lower-nitrogen and higher-phosphorous fertilizer types.

Choosing Plants For Your Container Garden • Plants that thrive in like soil, watering and light conditions make successful combinations. When combining

plants, size, texture, proportion, color, setting and lighting all play a role.

Caring For Your Vegetables • Containers offer the advantage of being portable. • Most fruit-bearing vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squashes and eggplant require full sun. • Leafy vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage and spinach can tolerate more shady locations, unlike root vegetables such as radishes, carrots and onions. • There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to watering. Feel the soil—if the first inch or so is dry, add water until it starts to drip out of the drainage holes. For more information on home garden varieties, visit www.seminis.com.

South Park 8th Grade Girls Undefeated Metro Division 2 Champs South Park 8th Grade Girls Basketball Team. Back Row (l-r): Coach Mike Greer, Leah Campolong, Elisa DeRose, Brittany Andrews, Justine Dean, Coach Paul Palaschak.

The South Park 8th grade girls' basketball team recently completed another phenomenal season in the Metro USA Sports League. The team went undefeated in the regular season and won their division. Unfortunately, they fell short of perfection, losing the championship game in a hotly contested match. The girls improved their game throughout the year by participating in the Metro USA Sports regular season games, playoffs, summer workouts/leagues and various open class tournaments. Each player's talent and ability is reflected by the way they work together as a team on the court. With the support of their coaches, parents, family and friends, the team will be well-prepared to transition to a higher level of basketball in high school. Good luck to the girls in their future endeavors and many thanks to everyone who have encouraged them along the way. The team is coached by Paul Palaschak and Mike Greer.

Journey to Jerusalem Saint Francis Players Tell the Stories of Holy Week By Paul Chasko

On Palm Sunday the Saint Francis Players of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Finleyville brought visitors a little closer to the happenings of Holy Week by stepping into the sandals of Christ’s Apostles and Disciples for an afternoon as they related what they experienced during Holy Week. Their guests in small groups were led through “the streets and rooms of Jerusalem” and there learned more of the details surrounding Holy Week as seen through the eyes of the Apostles and Disciples. Attendance was good and the sessions went on all afternoon after which the players and staff enjoyed a well-deserved break and dinner.
