Christmas Spirit in Action at American Legion Post 613

n December 15, American Legion Morrison-Ritchey Post 613 concluded another successful toy drive for children in the Finleyville and Union Township area. Unit 613 American Legion Auxiliary, Squadron 613, Sons of the American Legion and generous members of our post and community participated with donations and assistance. $1,500 in toys and games were presented to the Ladies of Charity of Saint Francis Church. In cooperation with other ministries, the items will be distributed in time to provide a Merry Christmas for those in need.

“We’re not just a ‘club’,” said Vice Commander Tom Miller. “We are veterans with a mission to serve our community and our fellow veterans.”

That mission continues year-round at American Legion Post 613.

Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Light-Up Night Entertains Community Santa and Mrs. Claus, Christmas carols, decorations and a seven-foot-tall Frosty the Snowman entertained patients watching from their windows as well as families from the community gathered at Monongahela Valley Hospital’s 29th Annual Light-Up Night on Nov. 25.

After President and CEO Louis J. Panza Jr.’s message, the evening’s grand moment came as two lucky boys flipped the giant light switch, illuminating the two-story tree and several acres of decorations. Randomly chosen from among MVH employees’ children and grandchildren ages 5 to 10, the children who flipped the giant switch were: • Hunter Bright, age 7, grandson of Jayne Bright, and son of Ashley Milton and Jason Bright, all of Monongahela. Hunter’s stepfather is Steve Milton of Monongahela and his little brother is Parker, age 1.

• Randy Molek, age, 9, son of Julie Henry and Randy Molek, and stepson of Gary Henry, all of Coal Center. Randy’s sister Marissa, age 2, also attended. Jayne Bright and Julie Henry are both RNs who work at MVH in the Electroencephalography (EEG) department and the Operating Rooms, respectively.

“So, here we are gathered again as a community — physicians, volunteers, employees, neighbors, our families and guests, as well as patients watching from their rooms,” said Mr. Panza. “On behalf of myself and our 1,200 employees, I want to wish you a happy holiday season and tell you how pleased we are that you are here to kick off the 2013 Christmas season with us.”

New at this year’s event was a train display in the hospital lobby and an ensemble from the Monessen High School marching band that led Santa and Mrs. Claus to campus.

Ring in the New Year with a COLA

Many people ring in the new year with champagne. People who receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) get to ring it in with a COLA. This year, more than 60 million Americans are receiving a 1.5 percent cost of living adjustment (COLA) in their monthly benefit payment.

The 1.5% COLA begins with increased benefits for more than 57 million Social Security beneficiaries in January 2014, and payments to more than 8 million SSI recipients in late December 2013.

The estimated average monthly Social Security payment to a retired worker is $1,294 (in 2014), up from $1,275 (in 2013). The average monthly Social Security disability payment for an individual is $1,148 (in 2014), up from $1,131 (in 2013).

The basic monthly federal payment for SSI is $721 (in 2014), up from $710 (in 2013).

Some other changes that take effect in January of each year are based on the increase in average wages. For example, the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security payroll tax (taxable maximum) will increase to $117,000, up from $113,700. Of the estimated 165 million workers who will pay Social Security taxes in 2014, about 10 million will pay higher taxes as a result of the increase in the taxable maximum.

The amount of earnings needed for one credit of Social Security coverage has gone up as well, but all workers can still earn up to four credits in a year. In 2014, a worker earns a credit after earning $1,200. In 2013, one credit of coverage was $1,160. It takes forty credits to be fully insured for retirement benefits.

PTHS Schedules Cheer Clinic in 2014 The Peters Township High School Cheerleaders will host their annual Cheer Clinic on Saturday, January 25, 2014 from 1 – 3 p.m. at Peters Township High School. Registration is from 12:15 – 1 p.m. and performances for friends and family begin at 3:15 p.m. This is for children ages 5 years - 6th grade.

Learn a new dance, cheers and stunts! Instruction is provided by the award-winning PTHS cheerleaders and coaches. All clinic cheerleaders are invited to show off their new cheer clinic skills during the half-time show of the boys' varsity basketball game on Monday February 11, 2013 at Peters Township High School.

Pre-register by Wednesday, January 15 for only $25. Space is limited – register early! Registration includes a T-shirt and refreshments for your child on the day of the clinic. There is a $5 discount per family offered if multiple members of the same family register for the clinic. We cannot refund your registration money after January 17, 2014.

Monongahela Area Library Programs Planned for New Year The Monongahela Area Library will hold a ‘Buck a Bag’ Bio and New Year / New You Book Sale on all starred biographies and self-help/diet and fitness books. Those titles are a buck-a-bag through January 18.

The library is teaming with the Monongahela Elks Lodge to hold monthly spaghetti dinners at the Elks Lodge, 444 Jackson St.. The first dinner will be January 14 from 11:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for 12 and under. Advance tickets are available at the library desk.

Tween Book Club is still accepting new members. The next meeting is January 7 at 5:30 p.m. and the discussion will be on The People of Sparks.

Book Bites Book Club will meet Thursday, January 16 at 1 p.m. to discuss Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. New members are welcome.

A special evening Storytime will be held Tuesday, January 28 with stories and a craft about Groundhog Day. The program is at 5:30 and intended for children 3 to 7 years of age.

Lapghans Bring Holiday Cheer to Carroll Twp.’s Hilltop Residents

Storybooks and television specials present Santa’s elves as jovial men and women dressed in green felt suits with pointed hats. They also can be former school teachers dressed in jeans, as was the case earlier this month when Lexi Herron, of Finleyville, visited the Residence at Hilltop, in Carroll Twp., to deliver 19 crocheted “lapghans” that she hand crafted for the residents. Mr. Herron calls her creations lapghans because they are smaller than the average afghan — an ideal size for people to place on their laps.

“My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was in the eighth grade,” said Mrs. Herron, who had little time to crochet until she retired in 2004.

Mrs. Herron’s first donation of lapghans was to Fayette Home Care & Hospice, the contact made by her sister, a dietitian at Uniontown Hospital at the time. In addition to donating lapghans to the hospice three times, she also donated 20 lapghans to the

residents of the Presbyterian Home in Washington this past September.

“Each of my lapghans is a little different from the others,” she explained. “I use different colors of yarn and crochet some in pastels and others in vibrant colors. I have made them in red, white and blue for veterans and black, gold and white for Steelers fans.”

When she began crocheting lapghans to donate to hospices and assisted-care facilities, Mrs. Herron purchased the yarn on her own. Once word spread that she was crocheting for patients, people began to send her yarn, which she gladly accepted. Mrs. Herron welcomes donations of yarn.

Monongahela Area Library Partners With Elks Lodge to Launch Spaghetti Dinners The Monongahela Area Library is joining with the Monongahela Elks Lodge #455 to hold a series of Sunday spaghetti dinner fundraisers in 2014.

The first dinner is slated for Sunday, January 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 444 Jackson St. “We knew the Elks would be great partners to work with,” noted library director Elina Filander. “They’ve come to our rescue on two major projects in recent years with funding so we know they have our interests at heart.”

The Elks will serve as primary hosts for the dinners, providing the locale and the expertise in hosting dinners. The Elks had a long tradition of spaghetti dinners that faded away a few years ago while maintaining other dinners on their fundraising agenda.

Library Board members, their family members, staff and Friends will staff the dinner both behind the scenes with food prep and clean-up and as servers.

Dinner will consist of spaghetti and meatballs, salad, roll/bread, dessert, and choice of coffee, and hot or iced tea. Other drinks may be purchased at the bar. The groups plan to hold the dinners on the 2nd Sunday of each month.

Franciscan Blend fair trade coffee will be available at the Motherhouse and sold during soup pick-up. Franciscan Blend is $9.99 for a 12 oz. bag. Other flavors include regular, chocolate-cherry, hazelnut and French vanilla. Decaffeinated versions of the regular and hazelnut are also available. All proceeds from soup, coffee and craft sales benefit the Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence of God.

Cuddle Time for the Very Young Every Tuesday from 11-11:30 children from birth to 2 years of age can enjoying learning the rhythm and cadence of storybook language. This program is a great way to give little ones successful experiences with books. Every child needs to be accompanied by an (adult) lap to cuddle on.

Story Time Every Wednesday morning the toddler-set (ages 2 and up) are invited to story time plus an educational group activity. Please bring your child at 10 a.m. for fun and more experience with book learning. Your library card will allow you and your young ones to select books to take home.

After School Older children are invited to the library every other Monday from 3:30 to 4 p.m. for more adult-lead reading activities with youngsters from Sisters’ Place. Inquire at the main desk for details.

Book Clubs for Adults Our library hosts two book clubs. The first is held on the second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. The second club meets every third Monday at 9 a.m.

Anyone interested in joining may stop in at the library and request a copy of this month’s book. Come, make friends, and have a stimulating chat along with coffee and goodies.

Game Day Every third Saturday, the library schedules a children’s game day. Board games are provided, and all schoolaged students are welcome from noon to 2 p.m.

Downton Abbey Tea Program Kicks Off New Fun for “Foodies” Series at PT Library The Peters Twp. Public Library Cooking Club will kick-off a new “Fun for Foodies” series for 2014 with a Downton Abbey Afternoon Tea on Sunday, January 5 at 2 p.m. The program is aimed for fans of the series and will coincide with the Season 4 premiere in the United States that same evening on PBS. FAFSA Completion Workshop Offered at PT Library In partnership with the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA), the Peters Twp. Public Library will offer a free FAFSA Completion Session on Saturday, January 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at the library.

Mingo G.I.F.T. Shoppe Extends Thanks to Supporters December 4th through December 7th was a busy and exciting time at Mingo Church as registered families came to shop for the Christmas holiday.

Light-Up Night Sparkles in Elizabeth Borough

Lynn Terbey and Mary Beth Cline took charge of Light-Up Night this year and gifted the Elizabeth Borough residents with an event-filled afternoon. Terbey expressed that LightUp Night is a “Thank You” to the residents of Elizabeth Borough. Treating the community with an old-fashioned community Christmas celebration is a way to show the residents how much they are appreciated!

The day began with a neighborhood Christmas party at the Third Street Elementary school. Firefighter Terry Holt played DJ for the day, filling the party, and later, the parade street with Christmas songs. Home Depot passed out crafts to the children and Boy Scout troop leaders helped the children to assemble their creations. The young Boy Scouts helped children make Christmas tree ornaments. A free movie was held at the Grand Theatre following the parade.

For the businesses, there was a window decorating contest. The judges were pet owners who regularly visit Cline's Riverside Veterinary Clinic. Winners received ribbons and certificates of achievement.

Nationwide Insurance won 1st place, RSR Tech won 2nd place, and Clairton Works Federal Credit Union won 3rd place.

Elizabeth Forward Community Chorus Rocks the Christmas Stage

“The Gift Goes On” was the theme of the Elizabeth Forward Area Community Chorus Christmas Concert.

This year's concert was a milestone for choir members Jennifer Herrington and Mike Trainor. They have been performing with the choir for 20 years.

Students in 3rd, 4th, and A grand performance by 5th grade can also participate Ramone Rivera and Zoe Gossar in the chorus as members of the junior choir, and students from Elizabeth Forward, Belle Vernon, McKeesport, Norwin, and South Allegheny help to comprise the junior choir currently. The students practice faithfully every week, starting in September.

Their next show, “From Malt Shops to Motown,” will be performed May 2, 3 and 4.

The Elizabeth Forward Area Community Chorus currently comprises a group Kaitlyn Karaffa and Grace Haywood are of roughly 55 enthusiastic proud members of the junior choir. vocalists from Elizabeth and surrounding communities.

The chorus is community-based and has stayed true to its roots as having an open door to all who have a joy of singing.

Help Preparing for U.S. Citizenship Test Offered at PT Library

Upcoming Meetings of the South Hills Friends of the Montour Trail

Results of the 2010 census show an increase in immigrants residing in the Washington County area. Many may wish to become U.S. citizens and need help preparing to take the U.S. Citizenship Test. Part of becoming a U.S. citizen is passing the naturalization test, in which up to 10 questions from a list of 100 will be asked – at least 6 must be answered correctly to pass the test.

The Peters Township Public Library will offer a session on Saturday, January 11, 2014 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. to help prepare for the test and increase confidence when entering the naturalization interview. Register to attend by emailing programs@ptlibrary.org or call 724-941-9430.

The South Hills Friends of the Montour Trail is a group of individuals interested in the maintenance, improvement and promotion of 11 miles of Montour Trail from Library (Milepost 35.3) to Clairton (Milepost 46.3).

The Friends meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the South Park Twp. community room, located at 2675 Brownsville Road, South Park. The next two meetings will be held January 14 and February 11, 2014.

Festive Finleyville Light-Up Included Hot Dogs, Cookies, and Finally, Santa Claus

What a great evening! Light-up night in Finleyville was pretty much what you’d expect from the great folks that make up this small community in Washington County.

Finleyville hasn’t lost much of that small-town charm that it’s kept over the years and its resiA group of happy carolers sing at light-up night. dents know how to celebrate Christmas.

Folks arriving along Washington Ave. enjoyed the beautiful Christmas lights. At the Community Center, they were greeted by Mayor Kutsek and were treated to hot dogs, hot and cold drinks and cookies.

A special guest that stayed for the entire evening was US Representative Tim Murphy. He participated in the caroling and helped Mayor Kutsek welcome parents, grandparents and kids.

Caroling by candlelight on the lawn of the Community Center was followed by the arrival of Santa Claus. He and his elves were brought in on one of The Finleyville VFD trucks and handed out treats as he made his way into the community center where he listened to the Christmas wishes of all the kids and some of the grown-ups as well. Everyone who visited with Santa left with a stocking full of goodies. During the evening folks were also treated to songs written and sung

Elizabeth Borough Issued New Police Cruiser Cruiser Design Reflects Collaboration with West Elizabeth

The new Elizabeth Borough Police Dept. cruiser patrols sister cities Elizabeth and West Elizabeth and has been designed to reflect the police merger between both areas.

Steel River Designs was honored to have the opportunity to "re-invent" the Elizabeth Borough and West Elizabeth police cruisers. The design on the new vehicle showcases the police merger between Elizabeth Borough and their sister city West Elizabeth. Jon Neff (owner, painter, artist), Scott Jamison (mechanical engineer), Joe Trail (mechanic, body man), Rachel Pipp (secretary-office manager), Chris Meskanick (IT/Computer Graphics) and Papa Mark Neff offered over 100 hours of their time, patience and creativity to this project.

Steel River Designs has won multiple 1st place awards for custom paint jobs.

They have been featured in numerous major magazines and books.

Retired Men’s Luncheon Group Hosts Civil War-Themed January Meeting America has just commemorated the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. At the January meeting of the RMLG of Pleasant Hills, author Mary Calland will present a program about Civil War in Pittsburgh, the explosion at the Allegheny Arsenal, the 9th Pennsylvania Reserves and their service with the Army of the Potomac.

Real Estate and Taxes We REALTORS® often point out that home ownership allows a lot of tax advantages not available to someone who merely pays rent. Any time the topic is taxes, you should always consult a tax professional for specific details regarding your individual circumstances. This article is meant to provide just few common items for you to discuss with your tax preparer.

Almost every level of government sets various laws and/or regulations regarding real estate transactions.

These may cover items as simple as occupancy permits and dye tests all the way up to the more complex issues such as capital gains and estate taxes. Some expenses are deductible and some are not. For those that are not, the expenses may be sometimes be used to offset the taxable amount when reporting a sale.

If you have a mortgage on your home, a portion of your monthly payment is applied toward interest. If you are

able to itemize deductions using a Schedule A, the interest portion of your mortgage payment is deductible as long as it is considered an “acquisition debt.”

Another possible Schedule A deduction involves the real estate property taxes on primary and secondary residences. The Assessed Value assigned by the County and millages are used to calculate the amounts due annually.

These taxes are paid to the County, the municipality and the school district where the property is located. If you have a mortgage that has an escrow account for taxes and insurance, remember that you don’t deduct what you pay into that account. Only deduct what is paid from the account to the taxing authority. Insurance is not deductible on your residences. Again, check with your tax preparer, because there may limitations that apply to your personal situation.

Good news is that both federal and state tax codes provide certain capital gains exclusions that allow sellers and buyers to avoid paying income tax on transactions when certain conditions apply.

As a homeowner you are entitled to an exemption of $250,000 (if you are single) or $500,000 (if you are married) of profit on your home when you sell. To qualify, you must live in your house at least two of the prior five years before the sale. If you are purchasing another house in the same region, you may need the proceeds to purchase your next house, but if you are downsizing or moving to a less-expensive area of the country, you will be able to put the extra proceeds in your pocket tax free.

The taxes to be paid on estates when people die and their assets are dispensed through wills and trusts are

treated differently for Federal and State purposes. The federal estate tax law requires tax to be paid on estates when the total value of the estate is above a predetermined figure. Since 2010, the estate tax exemption was on the first $1 million of the estate’s worth. Amounts above that figure that are taxed at 55 percent.

Pennsylvania taxes estates and trusts very differently from the IRS and you should consult with a knowledgeable estate planner to help you prepare for the consequences.

For landlords, a Schedule E is used to determine taxable income because there are many operating expenses involved with investment property. That means there are many other deductions such as depreciation, snow removal, maintenance, insurance and others.

When all is said and done, the best advice anyone can ever receive is that excellent record keeping is absolutely paramount to maximize all possible deductions to minimize taxes paid.

Sen. Smith Announces State Grants for Montour Trail Development in South Park State Senator Matt Smith (D-Allegheny/Washington) announced a total of $556,300 in state grant awards for Montour Trail projects in Moon Twp. and South Park.

The Montour Trail Council was awarded $313,300 to construct approximately 0.8 miles of trail, which will complete the mainline of the Montour Trail from Moon Twp. into downtown Coraopolis Borough. The completed Montour Junction trial segment will wind directly through a major Allegheny County recreation project, currently in development, and will ultimately provide a connection point for future trails extending along the Ohio River to the state line.

South Park was awarded $243,000 to construct approximately 900 feet of the Montour Trail, which would connect the east end of the Library Viaduct to residential Pleasant Street. This viaduct is scheduled to be rehabilitated for trail use this coming year.

Each of the funded projects will include ADA access, landscaping and other site improvements.

The grants were awarded through the Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources Community Conservation Partnerships Program. The grants are used toward the planning, acquisition and development of recreation and conservation facilities, natural resources, greenways and open spaces, trails, and heritage and facilities.

Mon Valley YMCA Partners with Cal U to Host Robotics Program The Mon Valley YMCA will host SeaPerch, an underwater robotics program that equips students in grades 6-12 and teachers with the resources they need to build an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV).

This program provides students with the opportunity to learn about robotics, engineering, science and mathematics (STEM) while building an underwater ROV as part of a science and engineering technology curriculum. Throughout the project, students will learn engineering concepts, problem solving, teamwork and technical applications.

This program will meet one night per week at the Mon Valley YMCA and will be administered by Vanessa EWT, a California University of PA student with a vast background in robotics.

The State of the Union – Union Township

Looking back over 2013, here’s what’s been accomplished in Union Twp. Financial: The auditors have declared that the twp. is healthy financially as it moves into 2014. It has operated within budget and will carry forward an estimated 1.2 million fund balance allowing a 2014 balanced budget and no increase in taxes.

Facilities: Funds are budgeted for the expansion of the municipal garage. The expansion will provide space for a JHAAA ambulance and crew quarters allowing 24/7 ambulance and paramedic coverage centrally located in Union Twp. All of the former U.S. Army properties that constituted the NIKE Missile sites are being transferred back to Union Twp. The properties come back with mineral rights which may provide a financial windfall for the twp. $15,000 has been budgeted for 2014 for a NIKE site development plan.

A road salt storage shed has been constructed on the NIKE site property bringing the twp. in compliance with DEP regulations for salt storage.

The meeting and support rooms in the municipal building were renovated. Landscaping was redone. New office furniture was purchased. A projection system was added to the meeting room.

Police Protection: Police protection will continue to be provided under contract with the Southwest Regional Police Dept.

Three additional shifts are budgeted for 2014 bringing the total to 13 shifts per week. A financially sustainable three-year plan was developed to reach full coverage in 2017.

Zoning and Code Enforcement: Municipal Consulting Services LLC

was budgeted an additional 8 hours/week for zoning and code enforcement services.

The twp. was brought into conformance with the Airport Hazards Zoning Ordinance at Finleyville Airport by cutting down trees in close proximity to the runway.

Ordinance codification was brought to completion. The updated twp. ordinances will be accessible by any resident using their personal computers with internet access.

Major Capital Equipment Purchases: • Backhoe for road work • Tractor and boom for grass and weed cutting Other Significant Tasks: • Road signs and fire hydrants in the twp. were GPS mapped to meet PennDOT requirements.

• A five-year plan for capital projects in the twp. was completed including a storm water control system for the Union Valley flood plain along Route 88.

• The twp. garage was brought into conformance to OSHA and insurance standards. Weekly safety meetings were instituted as per workman’s compensation requirements.

Union Twp. Recreation Park Improvements: • Paved half-court for basketball and a walking trail • New grill and cooler purchased • Plans underway for a new pavilion with 2013 budget funds • $50,000 assigned for matching funds in grant applications • Removed or repaired all outdated playground equipment Twp. Growth: • Dollar General Store opened on Route 88 • Subway applied for a permit to occupy the Route 88 Mini-Mart • 12 units (single family dwellings) were constructed in Tuscany Estates

South Park Teen Selected as USA Baton Twirling Ambassador in Peru

REMINDER: Editorial Deadline for the February issue is JANUARY 12

Katie Seibert of South Park was selected to represent USA in Trujillo, Peru as a twirling ambassador. She was one of 15 of the top twirlers from the United States invited to participate in the 63rd Annual International Festival of Spring.

Katie was recommended for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity based on her success at world and national competitions, skills as a twirler and her character. The trip lasted two weeks and consisted of twirling engagements, orphanage visits, gala dinners, and mingling with beauty queens, mayors and governors.

There was a long list of preparations needed for the trip and all the different functions they attended. Katie collected gifts that were given to the children at the orphanages. There were gift donations of toothbrushes, shirts, small toys, and USA pins. She also collected eyeglasses Katie Seibert for the Lion Club in Peru. Katie would like to sincerely thank Mrs. Jean Colantoni from the West Mifflin Lions Club for helping her with the gifts.

Katie’s most memorable activity of the trip was the time she spent at the children’s orphanages. The children loved seeing the twirlers perform, and they even had the opportunity to interact with them. Katie notes, “This experience has helped me to realize through twirling I can be a positive role model to others.” Katie is a member of the Senior Modernettes. She has her goal set on being a feature twirling in college, and so far, her dedication and hard work are paying off.

Joshua Maguire to Marry Cari Foster Joshua James Maguire, of South Park/Finleyville, son of Lisa Maguire, surprised Cari Lyn Foster, of Charleroi/Monongahela, daughter of Donald G. Foster, Jr. and Cindy Hatfield-Leach, when he asked Cari to marry him. She responded with a yes.

Joshua, the grandson of Maureen and the late John (Jack) Maguire, is employed at CT Auto Finleyville.

Cari, the granddaughter of Ronald Hatfield, Sr., Jane McCurdy, and Jean Richardson and the late Donald Foster, Sr., is employed at Eat ‘n’ Park, Bethel Park. The couple is planning a May 2016 wedding.

HEALTH, NUTRITION & FITNESS Mon Valley YMCA Group Fitness Classes Begin in January for 2014 The Mon Valley YMCA begins 2014 group fitness programs in January with classes available to both members and non-members.

The balanced body program, with 43 weekly classes designed for beginners through elite athletes, begins on January 2 and is free for members.

Some of the classes included in this 8 1/2 week session are group cycle, basic training, bokwa, arthritis, step, breathe (intermediate yoga), and yoga for beginners and active adults.

Zumba, with 10 weekly classes both mornings and evenings, begins on January 6 and includes Zumba for Beginners, Aqua Zumba, and Zumba Strength.

Water exercise, comprised of 17 weekly classes in both shallow and deep water, begins January 6.

Two low-intensity classes offered are arthritis and wet vest, which allow even those with stiff, achy joints to exercise.

Higher intensity classes include aqua power, advanced wet vest, aqua fit, and splash dance.

Boot Camp for Kids is held on Wednesdays at 5:45 p.m. for 5-8-year-olds and at 6:30 p.m. for 8-13-year-olds, beginning January 8. Free to members.

Monongahela Valley Hospital First and Only Hospital in Southwestern PA to Offer Latest Radiation Therapy Some people who have been diagnosed with cancer will travel hundreds of miles from their homes for the latest treatments. People in western Pennsylvania have access to one of the latest therapies at Monongahela Valley Hospital’s (MVH) Charles L. and Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center, in Carroll Township.

MVH is the first and only hospital in western Pennsylvania that offers radiation therapy treatments using the new Elekta Agility that includes a multi-leaf collimator (MLC) device that provides precise, high-resolution beam shaping to target tumors. Use of the MLC device enables medical professionals at MVH to administer higher doses of radiation at multiple sites simultaneously. It delivers radiation to the unique contours of the tumor while reducing the risk of exposure to healthy tissue.

“Our new MLC, with a groundbreaking design which features leaf speeds that are twice as fast as conventional beam shaping devices, enables the radiation oncology team at MVH to offer a

new level of conformance to tumor targets for rapid, accurate patient treatments,” said Mohsen Isaac, M.D., MVH’s director of radiation oncology and clinical assistant professor at Temple University School of Medicine.

An MLC is a device composed of many individual tungsten “leaves” that shape beams of therapeutic radiation that are delivered from different angles around the patient. The Agility is equipped with 160 MLCs which is twice the number of leaves used in most typical treatment centers. It also includes ultra-fast leaf movements.

At MVH, skilled oncologists, surgeons, nurses, radiation therapists, social workers, nutritionists, pharmacists and case management coordinators help patients win the battle against cancer using advanced technology with a personalized approach.

MVH’s cancer program, which includes medical oncology, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, diagnostic radiology and surgical services, is accredited by the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer.

Recently, officials at two universities on the east and west coasts struggled to get control of dangerous meningitis outbreaks. Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord.

Early symptoms include fever, headache, body aches and fatigue.

Other symptoms include: stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, confusion and sensitivity to light.

While rare, meningitis is often deadly. Nearly 10 - 15% of those who contract the disease die and another 10 15% are left with a permanent disability such as deafness, brain damage or the loss of a limb.

Relatively few people infected with the meningococcal bacteria become sick; however, they can become carriers. The meningococcal bacteria can live in the throat for weeks and even months before a person becomes ill.

Unlike the common cold, there is a vaccine to protect people from meningitis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that young adults — particularly collegebound students — be vaccinated against meningitis.

“Approximately 1,000 to 1,200 people get meningococcal disease each year in the United States. Even being treated with an antibiotic, individuals

are left with loss of their arms or legs, nervous system problems, deafness, seizures and strokes which can have permanent damaging neurological effects and even death,” said Michelle Antanovich, CRNP, clinical lead at Healthy Directions at Giant Eagle.

“Infectious diseases tend to spread more quickly in community settings where larger groups of people gather together.

“College students living in dormitories are at increased risk for meningococcal meningitis. To keep from being one of these statistics, get your children immunized today.”

Healthy Directions, located in the Finleyville Giant Eagle, has a supply of the meningitis vaccine. Other vaccines available include: Hepatitis A and B, Influenza, Pneumonia, Shingles, Varicella (Chicken Pox) and Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis (DPT). A certified registered nurse practitioner is available to administer immunizations at Healthy Directions Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Finleyville Giant Eagle is located at 3701 Route 88, Finleyville.

Attendance Matters! Clairton City School District would like to congratulate over 100 middle/high school students who had perfect attendance, zero tardies, and no class cuts for the 1st marking period.

To celebrate Thanksgiving, Clairton Middle/High School and Clairton Elementary teamed up to host ‘Thankful for Senior Citizens.’

Approximately 50 senior citizens gathered in the high school auditorium to enjoy desserts and entertainment provided by the elementary music department. Hosts included Student Council, Student Leadership, National Honor Society, Bear Paws Against Bullying, and sophomore class leaders.

Clairton Chorus performed at Kennywood's Holiday Lights on November 30th. Students sang a variety of songs from classics to holiday selections. Other performances for the elementary chorus this holiday season included local nursing homes, senior centers, and Clairton's City holiday celebration.

Clairton recently held a National Honor Society Mentoring/Holiday Lunch.

To celebrate the season, some National Honor Society students accompanied transition students to Yokoso in Homestead. Pictured are NHS students and their sponsors, Mrs. Alexis Trubiani and Mrs. Jennifer Wardropper.

The Consortium for Public Education has created a program called My Action Plan for Success (MAPS). This program involves various districts in Allegheny County and is designed to prompt students' awareness of career exploration and post-secondary education. The driving force behind the concept is to provide the students with an opportunity to design their own pathway to success and personalize their learning.

Clairton City School District has implemented this program in grades 6-12. Each teacher and paraprofessional has an advisory team of 10-15 students with whom they spend time with during an activity period. PTHS Cheerleader Pancake Breakfast a Huge Success

Modeling the suit is 7th grader Leonard Robinson.

Sense of Place Learning brought the Rivers of Steel's Traveling Trunk to the CASTLE Program. The trunk contained lots of interesting artifacts, including examples of the raw materials for making steel and the silver protective heat suit being modeled here, which is worn by steelworkers working in blast furnaces.

On November 25, kindergarten had a special performance in the cafeteria for their family and friends.

Kindergarten teachers prepared their students to sing songs and recite poems about being thankful. Each student decorated a hat or headband to wear. Parents and friends gathered in the cafeteria to be entertained and to hear about what the Class of 2026 is thankful for.

At the monthly school board meeting the board voted unanimously to hire acting superintendent Dr. Ginny Hunt as the permanent superintendent. Dr. Hunt has served Clairton City School District as director of curriculum for the last 2 years. Dr. Hunt has over 35 years of experience as a high school and elementary teacher, principal, Director of Curriculum and Executive Director of Staff Development. A graduate of Indiana University (IUP), she completed post-graduate work and earned her Doctorate Degree from Pictured are Dr. Ginny Hunt and Board of the University of Texas. Her goals for Clairton are to work collaboratively with the teachers, the school board and community to improve student achievement. She will also work to secure funding for programs, resources and professional development that will positively impact teaching and learning.

Dr. Hunt lives with her husband Dennis Hunt, a retired teacher, and enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, Preston and Ethan Hunt.

The 5th Annual PTHS Cheerleader All-You-Can-Eat-Pancake Breakfast was held on Saturday, November 16 at St. Benedict’s in McMurray. The whole community and their families were welcomed to attend. Close to 600 breakfasts were served.

The cheerleaders served pancakes, sausage, juices, coffee and tea. Toppings for the pancakes included strawberries, blueberries, chocolate chips and Youth Cheerleaders Toss-A-Flapjack winner Sydney whipped cream. There was a Chinese auction with 65 baskets broken down into three categories, ones under $160, ones that were over $160 and premium ones that were worth over $2,000. Thanks to the individuals and businesses who donated to our Chinese auction. Jerry Simmons won $422 from the 50/50 Raffle.

Regis McKenzie, the voice of Peters Township High School Football, was the High School Athletes emcee of the event. Cheer coaches Flip-A-Flapjack winner Emily McKenzie is all smiles.

Chelsea Stockhausen, Amanda Simmons, Paige Seelhorst and Ashley Leddy assisted in the fun. Christine Pituch and Claudine O’Connell took over the ranks by co-chairing the event this year. Posters and table runners highlighted the Cheer Boosters’ generous sponsors.

Ringgold Soccer Teams and Eat ‘n’ Park Score Big for Children’s Hospital

Both the Ringgold High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams competed this year at the annual “Tips for Tots” night, held at the Monongahela Eat ‘n’ Park on Thursday, December 5. The teams acted as servers and bussers for a busy night with a trophy going to whoever could collect the most tips for Children’s Hospital Free Care Program.

“People tip more and it’s a busier night than usual but we get to work a little less,” said Eat ‘n’ Park server Raeanne Schultz, who was being shadowed by several Ringgold students. It was a hectic yet festive atmosphere with lots of smiles all around.

“We’re just following the lead of Eat ‘n’ Park employees, having a good time and trying to figure out what we’re doing!” said Ringgold boys soccer player James Snyder.

Last year the charity raised over $900 for Children’s Hospital, with the Ringgold cheerleaders competing against the Ringgold football players, according to Eat ‘n’ Park coordinator Linda Mayou. Several others helped organize the event this year, which had 24 participating students, including Jeremy Perez and Connor Dudas, main captains of the boys’ team and Alana Nickolls, Jill Bartman, Jordan Curry and Megan Hyslep, captains of the girls’ team.

“Monongahela Eat ‘n’ Park has been number one in fundraising for this event for the last 14 years,” said Linda Mayou. “We thank the community for their strong participation.” Several gift baskets were raffled off to boost donations further.

At the end of the night, the girls’ team won the competition and was awarded the trophy. A total of $1,936 was raised in total, more than twice the amount of last year. Great food and fun was had by all and a special thank you went out to Tammi Nichols, Alana Nichols, Linda Mayou and Kelly Cologiovanni for their work in pulling the event off.

McClellan Elementary Students Bid Pleasant Hills Police Chief Cunningham Goodbye McClellan Elementary School students filled their halls on Friday, December 13, to say goodbye to Pleasant Hills Police Chief Edward Cunningham as he took his final patrol of the school before his retirement from the force.

Chief Cunningham, a daily presence at McClellan for 37 years and the 5th grade D.A.R.E officer for 18 years, received Chief Edward Cunningham cheers, balloons and letters of thanks from students while “Hail to the Chief” played over the intercom system.

The staff of McClellan Elementary School thanks Chief Cunningham for his years of service and wishes him the best. He will be missed.

Registration Open House Scheduled at John McMillan Preschool John McMillan Presbyterian Church Preschool is hosting a Registration Open House on Saturday, January 25 from 9 a.m. to noon. Parents may register children for the 2014-2015 classes, visit the classrooms, and meet the teachers.

Blackwood Now Accepting Applications for 2014 Scholarships Deadline to Apply is February 1 Once again, the Blackwood Theater Organ Society will be awarding several scholarships to area high school seniors pursuing a college degree in instrumental music performance. Completed applications must be postmarked no later than February 1, 2014.

Applications will be reviewed by a screening committee and finalists will be required to audition at Heinz Hall in March before a panel of musicians from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of musical talent, recommendations from private and high school music teachers, academic performance, the written essay, motivation and financial need. Selected recipients will perform at a recital at the Blackwood Estate in Harrisville, PA in May. Over the past thirteen years, the Society has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships to the top high school musicians. Scholarship amounts range from $3,000 to $5,000 with an average of six recipients per year. Past recipients have attended some of the most renowned music schools in the country including Julliard, the New England Conservatory of Music, Oberlin College, Berklee College of Music and the Eastman School of Music.

The Blackwood Theater Organ Society is a not-for-profit organization created to encourage students to pursue instrumental music performance careers. The Blackwood Estate is home to a rare Wurlitzer theater pipe organ and concerts featuring internationally-acclaimed performers are held annually with the proceeds going towards the scholarship fund and other charities.

McClellan Elementary 1st Graders Collect Pajamas for Pajama Progam

TJHS Student Takes Part in Genome Project Thomas Jefferson High School senior Ritwick Gupta is one of 55 students to take part in genome research at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.

Gupta worked at The Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC Shadyside as part of the hospital’s Department of Biomedical Informatics. His project, titled “The Distribution of Palindromes in the Human Genome,” analyzed palindromes (a DNA or RNA sequence that reads the same in both directions) in the human genome, in order to identify palindromes within genes linked to cancer. Gupta also ran statistical analysis on all results. The abstract has been submitted to the academic journal, “The Journal of Pathology Informatics,” for publication.

Gupta hopes to attend the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University or Yale University once he finishes his studies at Thomas Jefferson High School.

First graders at McClellan Elementary School collected 70 pairs of pajamas to donate to Scholastic Reading Club and Pajama Program. The students celebrated their accomplishment on Friday, December 13 by wearing their pajamas to during the school day. All pajamas will be given to Pajama Program, a non-profit aimed to give warm pajamas to children in need. Children receiving the pajamas will also get a brand-new book to read.

“The students liked the idea of gifting books because they are learning to read,” said McClellan Elementary School first grade teacher Moira Kaczmarek. “The first graders were thrilled that the children would receive a book of their own to read and to keep at home.”
