Symphony of Food – Chefs’ Showcase Dinner Is January 25

OMEN of Southwestern PA, Inc. presents the 6th Annual Symphony of Food – Chefs’ Showcase Dinner on Friday, January 25 at Bella Sera Venue at 414 Morganza Road, Canonsburg. The philanthropic event is held to raise funds to help women and children in need in western Pennsylvania. Symphony of Food chairpersons are Carol Gehrig and Donna Nardine. WTAE’s Sally Wiggin will preside over an evening of luscious food; entertainment by South City Jazz Band and Howard Mincone, physical comic and Juggler; and a fabulous Chinese auction.

The “Parade of Chefs� will feature five, well-known chefs each preparing their signature course for the sit-down dinner. Chefs participating this year are John Gruver, Market District; Al Collins, Al AN’ Ruben’s Bar and Grill; Matt Hellon, Center Plate; Kevin Sousa, Salt of the Earth; Giuseppe DiGristina, Bella Sera Venue; and Athena Sarris, Sarris Candies. he Union Township Neighbor to Neighborhood Community Watch (NNCW) group recently held its annual Christmas party. As special guests, the emergency responders serving Union Township were invited. Representatives from the Jefferson Hills Area Ambulance Association (JHAAA) and the Southwest Regional Police Department (SWRPD) attended. SWRPD Chief John Hartman, guest speaker, updated attendees on police activities in Union Township and introduced the newest member of the force – K9 Officer Dave Hartman and new K9 Officer Kyros. He explained that Kyros Officer Kyros visited the NNCW completed training and acclimation to meeting in December. his patrol areas about three weeks ago and has already participated in several drug-related police searches. Kyros is handled by Officer Dave Hromada, who trained along with Kyros to work as a team.

Chief Hartman cautioned those in attendance that Kyros is not a pet but a working dog and we shouldn’t attempt to pet or feed him. Chief Hartman also recognized JHAAA as one of the best and most professional ambulance services he’s worked with. He stated that his officers are always relieved to see the JHAAA vehicle arriving at the scene of an incident involving personal injury.

Union Township supervisor Larry Spahr was there as well and announced that Union Township has budgeted for three additional eight-hour shifts for SWRPD in Union Township for 2013. All Union Township board members, including current Chairperson Linda Evans Boren, have been pleased with the support received both from JHAAA and SWRPD.

Finleyville Resident Urges Stand Against Guns Dear Editor,

Bereaved Brother Continues Sibling’s Battle Against Lung Cancer Dear Editor, Sometimes, in the blink of an eye, life takes a sudden turn. And so it did on September 1, 2011, when my brother, Scott, was admitted to the hospital after an MRI found a tumor in his back. A CAT scan the next day revealed more troubling news, more tumors. Someone who routinely ran 100 miles a month was now confined to a hospital bed, barely able to move without experiencing severe pain. Just four months prior, Scott was at his athletic peak, completing his very first marathon in Cincinnati, finishing in an astounding 3:45. Little did we know that, in all likelihood, he completed those 26.2 miles while in the early stages of lung cancer. Scott's inner drive and determination while running were undeniable, and we felt that those traits could push him over the top in this battle. While there were setbacks, Scott persevered. However, for every step forward, lung cancer forced him two steps back. It was a hill he could not climb, and he lost his battle just days before Christmas at the age of 26. Having never smoked in his life, how could lung cancer have stricken Scott? Sadly, doctors were never able to give us any answers. Now, my family will continue to battle the disease that prematurely took Scott's life. We have set up the Scott A. Garet Memorial Foundation and have also organized the Flying Monkey 5K Run/Walk, both in support of raised awareness and funds for lung cancer research. Through these efforts, we have been able to meet many wonderful individuals, including those at the American Lung Association. Their desire to bring attention to lung disease has given us strength in knowing we are not alone. Others are battling with us, fighting to shed light on this topic. As the years progress, we will continue to spread Scott's story. His memory will live on. Lung cancer does not just impact smokers. Something needs to be done, and I, along with my family, will continue Scott's fight. He would do the same for us.

I am writing this as I have just heard the news of the attack on the little children in the elementary school in Connecticut. What a shame!! Is there no respect for life in this country anymore? I hear so many say that people kill people, not guns. Well, guns are made for one purpose—that is to KILL! It is time to take a stand and get control of this problem. Remember, when the constitution was written, the guns back then took forever to load. Would those people still have written the second amendment as they did if they saw all of the weapons we have today? I THINK NOT. How many more have to die before we take action? May God have mercy on our souls.

Generous Giver Speaks Out for Those in Need Dear Editor, I have a bone to pick with my editorial pen pals who criticized my suggestion that our government should legislate food, clothing, shelter, and medicine for people in need. In a recent editorial, it was basically said that they are unwilling to feed nine poor souls because there is one in the group that will take advantage of their charity. They are right. There will always be people who abuse the system. But how dare that fact justify letting the other eight people go hungry?

They suggested that I should take in one of those “lazy laggards” and that will show me! Well, the answer is that I have. The difference is that they call him a “lazy laggard” and I consider him a person in need.

The government should legislate to the extent of food, clothing, shelter, and medicine for all those in need. We can afford it, and the resulting decrease in the crime rate would probably pay for it. People who are hungry are thieves, and theft is very expensive.

And by the way, my parents gave me food, clothing, shelter, and medicine until I was about 20 years old and I did not become a social parasite. But you are right, one of ten will abuse the system.

Pitt Students Assist Friends of South Park in Great Fall Clean-up Forty-three students from the University of Pittsburgh, accompanied by two student supervisors, assisted volunteers from the Friends of South Park during the Great Fall Clean-up on October 20. The students are members of Pitt Make A Difference Day (PMADD), a community service organization. Volunteers gathered 60 bags of trash and enjoyed a hot dog lunch prepared by Donna Tressler. The food was donated by Bev Childers, the South Park Township Supervisors, and the Friends of South Park, the County Park.

The Friends of South Park are working to improve the park and have expended over 1,600 volunteer hours, and raised over $10,000 though fund raising activities such as a golf outing, chaired by Butch and Sharon Adams, two wine tastings, and one flea market, chaired by Linda Hedderman. Funds will be used exclusively to improve South Park. The next fundraiser for the Friends will be an Oldies Dance on Saturday, March 23, 2013.

Meetings are held the third Wednesday of the month; the next meeting will be held on January 16, 2013, 7:30 p.m. at the Buffalo Inn located on Buffalo Drive near the Park Administration Building. 2013 scheduled meetings are: Jan. 16, Feb. 20, Mar. 20, April 17, May 15, June 19, July 17, Aug. 21, Sept. 18, Oct. 16, and Nov. 20. All meetings will be held at the Buffalo Inn with the exception of the May 15 meeting, which will be held at the Home Economics Building. Public suggestions and input are always welcome.

The mission of the Friends of South Park is to preserve the rich heritage and resources of the Allegheny County park by identifying and recommending the areas of the park which need improvement; and then working to acquire the cooperation, resources, and funding to accomplish those improvements for the benefit of the park's visitors. New Electronics Recycling Law Enacted Starting January 1, 2013, Pennsylvania’s new electronics recycling law takes effect. The new law bans the disposal of TVs and computer equipment at transfer stations and landfills. Waste Management route crews will no longer pick up televisions and computer equipment for disposal. Computer equipment includes laptops, monitors, CPUs, printers, scanners, keyboards, mouses, speakers, cables, and battery backups. These items, if placed at the curb, will be left at the curb. PT Library Cooking Club Launches “Taste the World” Series Since discovering that their library patrons’ palates are anxious for new cuisines to sample and prepare, the Peters Township Public Library Cooking Club has plans to introduce a new “Taste the World” series in 2013. The series will feature recipes from a different country each month with demonstrations and tastings. These culinary trips around the world will be complimented by other library resources, like the library’s Mango Languages program, as well as travel books and DVDs for patrons to learn about each country a little more extensively.

Before launching this series, the library is looking for “guest chefs” to volunteer to prepare a dish or two from their heritage or family traditions for patrons to try during the cooking programs. Food expenses will be reimbursed. The club is looking for persons knowledgeable about dishes from the following cuisines: Asian, Greek, Mexican, Indian, Polish, Jewish, Spanish, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Caribbean, and Russian. The Cooking Club welcomes suggestions for other countries to include in the series as well. The club would like to begin the series in January 2013.

The Peters Township Public Library Cooking Club members have met once a month for over two years at the library to share their knowledge about various cuisines, to discuss cooking trends, and to share food samples. A $5/person fee is charged at each meeting to help defray the cost of food samples and other materials. Advance registration is required to attend a meeting and space is limited. BOGO Book Sale at Monongahela Area Library The Monongahela Area Library will have a BOGO clearance sale of all nonfiction and hardback fiction books running through January 12 during library hours. For every book purchased, shoppers may get a second book of the same or equal value for free. The library, which is located at 813 West Main Street, is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 11a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Junior Chorus members represent the school districts of Belle Vernon, Elizabeth Forward, McKeesport, and South Allegheny.

From November 30 through December 2, the Elizabeth Area Forward Community Chorus performed its annual Christmas concert, "Unspeakable Joy," at Elizabeth Forward High School. The chorus is made up of music lovers from elementary school and high school students to members of neighboring communities.

They gather together as a "community" choir and entertain crowds throughout the year at various places in Allegheny County.

The Junior Chorus members represent the school districts of Belle Vernon, Elizabeth Forward, McKeesport, and South Allegheny. They practiced for the Christmas concert once a week from September through November and left the audience smiling and in awe from their talented emotional show. The St. Mark's Bell Choir also added to the music renditions. Children of chorus members and Girl Scouts from Troop 54203 served as ushers at the concert. Also, the chorus collects canned goods at their performances, and donates a percentage of their proceeds to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

The spring concert, "Hooray for Hollywood," will pay homage to the silver screen with "everything from the Lion King to Butch Cassidy." The dates for the show will be May 3, 4, and 5.

Next year's Christmas concert will be titled, "The Gift Goes On." Rehearsals for the Spring Concert will begin on January 6. The chorus meets weekly at Bethesda Presbyterian Church at 6 p.m. in Elizabeth Borough.

Kids at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Finleyville had a nice opportunity to meet with Santa at a special luncheon held December 8, still with plenty of time for Santa to grant their Christmas wishes. St. Francis Finley Hall was filled children, parents, and grandparents all sharing a nice lunch while waiting for Santa to visit.

Yep, that’s my list Santa.

After lunch, Santa made his entrance, greet everyone and took his special chair as the children lined up to tell him what they’d really like for Christmas. Many of the kids had lists that Santa put in his bag, and his helpers handed out stockings filled with treats and small toys. A few of the younger kids there couldn’t figure out why Santa sounded so much like their Grandpap! Anyway, everyone had a great time and the children went home feeling confident their gifts would be there on Christmas. I hope Mom and Dad had a hand in preparing their lists.

Odyssey 5K Scheduled in Monongahela for January 5 Proceeds to Benefit Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation The first annual Run the Odyssey 5K will be held Saturday, January 5 in Monongahela.

The race is sponsored by Team Odyssey, the official running team of the Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation. The running team was formed in 2010 by Laura Boyd of Fallowfield Twp., a Ringgold Elementary South teacher, out of grief for her son Adam and celebration of her daughter Amanda. Both were diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare pediatric cancer, in 1999 but had devastatingly different outcomes of their treatments.

It's become Boyd’s mission to help find and fund a cure that would be effective for all children. Team Odyssey’s mission is to grow into a nationwide running team in order to raise awareness and support of neuroblastoma.

Her mission has become embraced by Team Odyssey members. In 2008, the Adam Boyd Scholarship fund was created by the Little Great Race committee.

In 2012, 52 Team Odyssey team members participated in the Pittsburgh Marathon’s Run for a Reason, raising more than $20,000 to support the Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation.

Team Odyssey membership is spread out throughout the Pittsburgh region, although the majority of the members call the Mid-Mon Valley home.

The date for the Run the Odyssey 5K was chosen to honor Adam Boyd, who passed away Jan. 8, 2004 after a courageous battle with neuroblastoma.

The 5K race will begin and end at Grace Lutheran Church and wind through the city’s neighboring streets.

Mon Valley YMCA Teen Leaders Collect Backpacks For the last month, youth from the Mon Valley YMCA Teen Leaders Volunteering and Community Service Club have been collecting backpacks for the local Donora/Monongahela Lions Club Chapter. Mon River Arts Receives Women of Southwestern PA Grant Mon River Arts is among 12 first-time recipients of grants from Women of Southwestern Pennsylvania, which awarded grants to 34 organizations serving women and children in 2012. In its 2012-2013 season, Mon River Arts will produce seven shows with youth and adult casts, and present the Kiddlywinks Family Series, the Gallery of Heroes show “We The People,” theatre arts classes and summer camp for youth.

WOMEN of Southwestern PA, Inc. (WOMEN) is a 501(c)(3)nonprofit organization based in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. I play sports. I used to play league softball, volleyball, and flag football— “used to” being the operative phrase.

After many years of trying to emulate my favorite athletes, I gave up these sports, Today, short of having surgery, I don’t think it would be possible for me to play any mildly physical or contact sport. My sport of choice these days is shooting. I do this semi-competitively at a shooting range; the cost is $100 a year to belong to my club and a fee to shoot in different events.

To participate I need a firearm, and to get one I have to go to a sports shop, pick one out, and pay for it. I also have to go through an FBI background check every time I purchase a gun and pay a tax when I pass. I am required to fill out a two- to threepage form for every firearm I buy, which the authorities keep on file to track how many I own. The tax I mentioned applies to every firearm and ammunition sale that helps fund antigun, anti-hunting, and animal rights organizations, as well as a myriad of other groups that only need to apply and be accepted to receive these funds.

Hazardous shipping charges and permit fees that the sports shops need to do business are added in to the price of everything I purchase.

Because of these extra charges and taxes, the price of a firearm and ammunition is high… but it’s my sport and I need the equipment to compete. To continue to participate in my sport, I cannot break the law or be suspected of mental instability. This would result in the loss of my right to own or possess a firearm and compete.

ter, I still must incur the wrath of people who are uneducated about guns, social media, regular media, and liberal politicians who enact legislation that costs millions of dollars to apply and multi-millions of dollars to repeal. Many think badly of me, but remember that it is not people like me but those who are criminal and mentally unstable that use guns to commit crimes and atrocities.

So while you watch the evening news and the politicians are screaming for more gun laws that make it harder to enjoy my “legal” pastime, please remember that I and my fellow law abiding gun owners use them for sport are not criminals—and it’s the criminals who don’t follow the laws.

As a father and outspoken member of my community, I abhor the most recent events at Sandy Hook and all of the shootings conducted by unstable people who slip past the law and cause so much pain and suffering. My heart goes out to the victims and their families, and I share their pain and fear.

Let’s not make the same mistake we’ve made in the past and penalize the law-abiding citizens and legal gun owners. Let’s go after the criminals… make it so hard for them to use a firearm in any crime that if they should, they pay the ultimate price… their complete loss of freedom.

Kids in Finleyville got an early Christmas surprise on December 16 when Santa stopped by the American Legion Post 613 to say hello and hear some of those last-minute wishes. The jolly gentleman knew that the Morrison-Ritchie Post was having its annual Christmas party where kids were treated to hot dogs and treats to eat along with a “goodie bag” of toys, coloring books, and other fun things. They also took part in party games and won prizes for good performance. About 50 children and adults attended and had an enjoyable time.

Lulu the Clown Entertains at Monongahela Area Library Children and parents alike were entertained

by Lulu the Clown on at the Monongahela Area Library on Saturday, December 1.

Part of a holiday celebration in town, the library also offered a craft session for children following the balloon art performance.

Lulu took suggestions from the children and was even able to make a balloon stink bug as requested. The event was courtesy of the Friends of the Library, which hosts events to fund library programs for children.

Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home Hosts Christmas Tree Lighting

Sam Robbins, social media manager for the Union-Finley Messenger and Mon Valley Messenger, and Steve Maffei, Jr., events coordinator for Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, place ornaments on the tree.

A Christmas tree lighting was held December 1, 2012 at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Pleasant Hills. Over 200 people attended and decorated an ornament as a remembrance of their loved ones. The ornaments were placed on the outdoor memorial tree that faces Curry Hollow Road in Pleasant Hills. This was the funeral home’s 1st annual Christmas tree lighting, and Jefferson Memorial looks forward to next year's event so family members can enjoy fellowship, friendship, and a celebratory time to remember their loved ones.

Take a Break from Cooking with Soup Take-Out Take a break from cooking in January with homemade soup take-out from the Sisters of St Francis of the Providence of God. The monthly Soup Take-Out on Wednesday, January 9 will offer wedding soup, broccoli soup, or chili for $5 a quart. Each quart of soup includes two dinner rolls, and the chili includes two corn muffins. Orders must be placed by Thursday, January 3 by calling 412-885-7232.

Soup orders can be picked up on Wednesday, January 9 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Sisters' Motherhouse, located at 3603 McRoberts Road in Pittsburgh's South Hills.

The Sisters host monthly take-outs from September through May, where patrons are offered several homemade selections. Using fresh ingredients, their chef makes the soups healthier by omitting additional salt and preparing cream soups with skim milk instead of heavy cream. Washington County Parks Offers 2013 Shelter Rentals

Winter Programs at Jefferson Hills Library

The Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation will begin accepting 2013 shelter reservations for Mingo Creek, Ten Mile Creek, and Cross Creek County Parks beginning Monday, January 14. The Parks and Recreation Office is now located in Room 705 of the Washington County Courthouse Square. Office hours are Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. From January 14–31, 2013 reservations will be accepted in person or by application through the mail.

Beginning February 1, reservations will also be accepted by phone with a credit card. Reservations are given on a first-come, first-served basis. Payment in full is due at the time of reservation.

Santa’s Helpers Abound in Finleyville

The American Legion Post 613 Morrison Ritchie (Finleyville) completed another successful toy drive in 2012. In coordination with local ministries, over $1,500 worth of new toys and games were purchased and collected. These will be distributed to local area children in need and in time for Christmas. On hand for the presentation at St. Francis of Assisi Parish were members of Post 613 American Legion, Ladies Auxiliary, and Sons of the Legion. “Our Finleyville community has a generous heart,” said Post Commander John Koller. “Our folks always come through when someone needs help.” The St. Francis “Ladies of Charity” will assist in prepping the gifts and finding a suitable home in the Finleyville area for each toy.

South Park Township Police and the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association have joined together to help reduce and prevent alcohol and drugimpaired driving.

The program is part of the larger U.S. Department of Transportation and the Ad Council's, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, National Mobilization. The Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association is supplying local police with posters for their businesses and drinking establishments that have a QR code that can be scanned with a smartphone. When the QR code is scanned, the phone is taken to a mobile web page that has the same marketing message as the Ad Council's National Campaign. It reminds you that both individuals and the community cannot afford the cost of impaired driving.

"South Park Township Police and the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association are committed to getting the word out that driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol is something we cannot afford to overlook in our community," said Dennis M. McDonough, Deputy Chief of South Park Township Police Department. "People who die in impaired-driving crashes are real people. They are our families, friends and neighbors and their deaths are preventable - they are not accidents."

Nationwide, over 10,000 people were killed in 2010 in alcohol-related crashes. In Pennsylvania, over 400 individuals were killed in DUI related crashes and the police in Pennsylvania made over 51,000 arrests. Statistics show that those most likely to drive under the influence are underage drinkers between the ages of 15 and 20; people between the ages of 21 and 34; and repeat or chronic drunk drivers - individuals who drive repeatedly after drinking, and often do so with high amounts of alcohol in their blood.

Approximately 68% of all children killed in alcohol-related crashes ride in a car with a drinking driver.

Over the past 10 years, the number of deaths due to impaired driving has decreased by 25%. Experts attribute this drop-off to stronger state and Federal laws; tougher law enforcement with stiff penalties; new technological tools to identify impaired drivers; effective public education about the risks of drinking/taking drugs and driving; and a change in the public's attitude. However, the number of people killed has leveled off over the last several years, and as a result, coalitions are working across the country with NHTSA to help reduce alcohol/drug-related fatalities.

Union Township Continues to Struggle With Airport Hazards Issue

I just returned from yet another hearing in the courtroom of Judge Emery (Washington County Common Pleas Court). She was hearing an account of where things stand on the issue of trees on Parish property that are creating a hazard for planes landing and taking off from the Finleyville Airport.

Present were attorneys for the Parish family, Union Township and the Finleyville Airport. Judge Emery had previously ordered that Union Township have these trees trimmed by four feet to reduce the immediate hazard with the cost to be paid by Union Township. Had she ordered the trees to be cut down entirely, the problem would be gone. Nevertheless, her order to have the trees trimmed by December 5 was never carried out.

Instead, the township elected to begin condemnation proceedings on the 16acre property involved in hope of forcing a sale to Union Twp. at a price determined by an independent appraiser. Finleyville Airport might then purchase the land from the township and deal with the trees them-

selves. Action on condemnation was delayed until the end of December.

Further clouding the issue according to the attorney representing Parish was the purported interest of another party to purchase the 16 acres in question as part of a larger tract purchase.

The attorneys left the courtroom agreeing to meet within the week to try and reach an amicable solution. Rumor has it that this issue first surfaced about 20 years ago. Gerald Cook, attorney for Finleyville Airport, commented, “This could go on forever!” The only thing certain at this point is that the taxpayers of Union Township will continue to pay for litigation over this issue and run the risk of having the township sued if an accident were to occur due to the hazard created by the trees on the Parish property.

It’s the responsibility of Union Township to enforce its Airport Hazards Ordinance and remove the hazard presented by the trees. Last August, the treasurer researched the cost related to this issue incurred by the township since 2005 and found it to be approximately $46,000. Records prior to 2005 were not reviewed.

Young and old alike enjoyed a visit with Santa, crafts, games, a huge Chinese auction, and excellent homemade food and goodies. All were pronounced "good" by Santa, and everyone received a gift and left with lots good memories of a fun holiday afternoon with friends and family.

Monongahela Valley Hospital Honors Local Emergency Services Team Monongahela Valley Hospital Emergency Department staff recently honored a local EMS service for bringing the first stroke patient to MVH after the hospital was named a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, in conjunction with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

Representatives from the Rostraver-West Newton Emergency Services accepted the certificate at a recent EMS managers meeting held at MVH. “Thank you from the community, the hospital staff and administration,” said Senior Vice President of Nursing Mary Lou Murt. “We are better able to serve Mon Valley residents when we work as a team toward the best interest of patients who may be suffering from stroke, because treatment time is especially crucial to recovery.”

MVH Stroke Care Coordinator Christine Snyder, RN, MSN, said MVH becoming a Primary Stroke Center meets MVH’s mission to provide the best possible care to the community.

Stroke symptoms might include a facial droop or uneven smile, arm numbness or weakness, and slurred speech or difficulty speaking or understanding. Time is of the essence and should someone experience or identify any of these warning signs, they should call 9-1-1 and get to the nearest certified stroke center immediately for care.

Burnsworth assures customers that his equipment is safe and sterilized. He uses "one-time needles" and follows the expiration dates to the day. He explained that even the ink has an expiration date, which he observes closely. Each needle and hose is sterilized in oxygenated EO gas and sealed until it’s used. “The front of each packet has a blue dot that turns white when the oxygenated gas inside expires,” said Burnsworth. Before applying the stencil for the tattoo, the area is cleaned with rubbing alcohol and upon completion it is washed again with Tincture of Green Soap. Burnsworth is certified in blood born pathogens and first aid/CPR. Small tattoos cost a minimum of $50; larger tattoos cost $100 an hour to apply (a typical session is 3-5 hours, depending on the size of the tattoo). Q: What is ptosis? (“toe-sis”) A: Ptosis is when one or both of the eyelids are drooping too low over the pupil, which can cause significant visual impairment, especially in the superior visual field. This is usually caused by a stretching or slipping of an eye muscle from its insertion point. Fortunately, this can usually be repaired very simply with either an external levator advancement or an internal mullerectomy. These outpatient operations take less than 30 minutes and have a very simple recovery period.

Q: What is dermatochalasis? (“dermato-ka-lasis”) A: Dermatochalsis is when extra skin over the eyelids begins to sag; this can also cause impairment of vision in the superior visual axis. A small resection of this extra skin (oftentimes along with resection of the nasal fat pad and underlying oribicularis muscle) not only corrects this problem very easily but also provides significant cosmetic improvement as well. This procedure is called a bilateral upper lid blepharoplasty.

Q: What are ectropion and entropion?

A: Ectropion is a turning out of the lower eyelid so that it is not touching the globe of the eye as is functionally required. When this occurs, patients often experience tearing and irritation.

Entropion is a turning in of the eyelid margin, which often causes the eyelashes to brush against the cornea. The cornea is exquisitely sensitive, and this can cause significant tearing and pain along with corneal scarring and eventual permanent loss of vision.

Both of these maladies can be fixed through a series of small concurrent procedures that more appropriately reposition the eyelid margin against the globe. These procedures take anywhere from 20-40 minutes and result in little post-operative pain or discomfort.

Q: What is a lower lid blepharoplasty?

A: A bilateral lower lid blepharoplasty is a surgery to correct excessive skin drooping and fat prolapse under the eyes. It is usually cosmetic in nature rather than for correction of a functional problem that would be covered by insurance. Excess skin and infraorbital fat are carefully excised to improve the contour and look of the face.

Patients are usually pleased with the very natural and non-artificial improvement in their appearance.

Q: Where are these procedures done and what is the recovery time?

Celina Cantini, Carie Guballa, and Taylor Myers from Ringgold High School have recently been selected to compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase North (QDSN), now in its 19th season, at Kent State University on January 5 and 6, 2013. QDSN is part of the Queen of Diamond’s Showcase events, which are the largest fast pitch softball showcases of this kind in the U.S. This event attracts athletes from more than 20 states and two Canadian provinces. Its sister showcase, the Queen of Diamonds South, is in its 5th season. Both events receive more than 2,000 applicants of which 264 athletes are selected based on many criteria ranging from ability, potential, academics, graduation year, coaches’ requests, and referrals. Cantini pitches and plays first base for Ringgold and travel ball for the Pittsburgh Diamond Stars. Guballa catches and plays outfield for Ringgold and travel ball for the Renegades, and Myers plays second and third base for Ringgold and travel ball for Tri State Venom.

South Park Youth Competition Cheerleaders Win State Champs The 2012 South Park Competition Cheerleading season has come to an end. This year, four squads and over 60 athletes represented the South Park community as the Eaglets, Starlets, Raptors, and Talons. All four South Park squads competed at the Elite Cheerleading and Dance Pennsylvania State Championships on December 2, 2012 at the Peterson Event Center.

Eaglets competed in the Twerps Division, Starlets in the Termites Division, Raptors in the Mighty Mites Division, and Talons in the Midgets Division. All four squads won their divisions and are now state champions! South Park Raptors were awarded grand champion medals for the highest score of all the recreational squads. These girls have worked very hard this season, starting practices in May and adding in extra practices when needed, just so they could be the best—and they proved they are!

Congratulations to all the South Park Competition Cheerleaders . . . your coaches, parents and the entire community are very proud of you.

Union Finley Bear Midget Team Captures Division Championship The 2012 Union Finley Midget Bears capped off their amazing season by capturing their Division Championship and representing the community in the Mon Valley Midget Football League Playoffs. The Bears completed the regular season with an amazing 7-1 record. The Bears offensive fire power amassed 212 points on the scoreboard throughout the regular season, and surrendering only 74, earning the 4th overall offense and defense in the league.

This amazing performance during the regular season earned the Bears the #3 overall seed in the playoffs. In the 1st round of the playoffs, Union Finley avenged their only regular season loss with a rematch against East Allegheny. The Bears left no doubt, winning 42-0. The Bears missed reaching the Championship Game by falling short against Brownsville in the 2nd round of the playoffs.

The Midget Cheerleaders were wonderful as well all season and throughout the playoffs. Their dedication and hard work was equal to that of the players, and it showed each week in the electricity and excitement they brought to the field.

This was truly a special group of players in every sense of the word; the majority of these boys became teammates at the Tiny Mite division, and has competed at the highest level every season. Over the past eight seasons, this group of players

has won eight division championships, played in four championship games, and won one championship. They grew up together on the gridiron and became not only teammates on the field but built lasting friendships off the field. Watching them grow into the players and young men that they have become today has been a pleasure for the entire Bear Nation and is a testament to the great organization at Union Finley, along with the parents, volunteers, coaches, and corporate sponsors.

Union Finley has been successfully competing in the Mon Valley Midget Football League for 39 years. This program has been and continues to be a successful feeder program for the surrounding school districts the players from Union Finley represent. Many graduates of this program have gone on to be members of WPIAL and state championship teams for their school districts.

Registration is open to all boys and girls in the Finleyville, South Park, Monongahela, Bethel Park, Peters Township and Nottingham Township communities, for Tiny Mite (Flag), 5-7 year olds; Termites, 8-9 year olds; Mighty Mites, 10-11 year olds; and Midgets, 12-13 year olds, for both football and cheerleading.

The league provides all equipment and uniforms. Keep an eye out for advertisements for the 2013 season registration dates in future editions of this publication.

Clairton Bears Return Home as PA Class A State Champions

Hundreds of Clairton Bears fans lined the streets of Clairton in the cold this evening with a big crowd at the stadium waiting for the Clairton Clairton Bears Head Coach Bears football team to return from Hershey, PA Tom Nola is tired but happy – after winning the PIAA State Championship. and proud of his team.

Two buses carrying fans who attended the game pulled in first, with the team bus following about 30 minutes later. With people cheering and car horns blasting, the team members and coaching staff made their way into the stadium where a crowd of several hundred fans were in the stands to cheer their champions. The players and the coaching staff made themselves available for photos and interviews while showing off the PIAA championship trophy and their individual medals.

By shutting out Dunmore 20-0 in the Class A championship game, the Bears logged their 63rd consecutive winning game – tying the 13th longest winning streak in the history of high school football in the United States. They also became the third school in Pennsylvania history to win four consecutive PIAA championship titles. The stat that’s most impressive in that 63 game winning streak is the points for/points against ratio – 2,817/296. A defense that gives up only 296 points over 63 games is doing something special—that’s an average of only 4.7 points per game.

In the Championship game, Clairton’s Tyler Boyd rushed for 117 yards, and quarterback Armani Ford completed 10 of 18 passes for 150 yards. Even Clairton Head Coach Tom Nola was impressed with his team finishing the season with a shutout in the championship game, and he honored his seniors by allowing them alone to accept the trophy at the center of Hershey Stadium. Clairton underclassmen shouted, “Next year is our year, we’ll be here next year!” Many of these seniors will be playing college football next fall. Coach Nola says he’s be thinking about retiring, but we’ll see next August.

Physical, mental and spiritual wellness is the mission of the Franciscan Spirit and Life Center, which is offering a new session of Tai Chi classes for the winter. Beginning in January, the Center will host Tai Chi classes on Monday evenings and Wednesday afternoons for both beginners and continuing students. Cold Weather And Cardiovascular Disease (NAPS)—The cooler temperatures of winter can present health challenges for those with heart disease—and those who love them. To help, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association offer some tips.

• People who are outdoors in cold weather should avoid sudden exertion, such as lifting a heavy shovelful of snow.

Hypothermia means the body temperature has fallen below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. It occurs when your body can’t produce enough energy to keep the internal body temperature warm enough. It can kill you. Heart failure causes most deaths in hypothermia. Symptoms include lack of coordination, mental confusion, slowed reactions, shivering and sleepiness.

HERE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL TIPS: • To keep warm, wear layers of clothing. This traps air between layers, forming a protective insulation. Also, wear a hat or head scarf. Heat can be lost through your head. And ears are especially prone to frostbite. Keep your hands and feet warm, too, as they tend to lose heat rapidly.

• Don’t drink alcoholic beverages before going outdoors or when outside.

• Flu and pneumonia pose greater dangers for people who have heart failure, or any heart condition, than for healthy people.

Ask a health care professional about getting a yearly influenza vaccine and a onetime pneumococcal vaccine (to guard against the most common form of bacte?rial pneumonia). Both vaccines are generally safe and seldom cause any severe reactions.

• As much as possible, avoid anyone who has a cold or the flu.

• Stay out of crowds during the height of flu season—usually October through March.

• Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly and frequently, especially after using the bathroom and before eating. Keep your hands away from your face and insist that all caregivers wash their hands thoroughly before approaching you.

• Always read the labels on all over-the-counter (OTC) medications, especially if you have blood pressure of 120/80 mm Hg or higher. Look for warnings to those with high blood pressure and to those who take blood pressure medications.

Consult your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medications or supplements.

• Be aware that the use of decongestants may raise blood pressure or interfere with the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications.

• Check the sodium content of any OTCs. Some are high in sodium, which can raise blood pressure. People with high blood pressure should have under 1,500 mg of sodium a day from all sources.

Senior News from the Venetia Community Center The following information is for the Venetia Community Center located at 800 Venetia Road, Venetia. We are sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging.

January lunches will be on the 10th and 24th. Blood pressures taken at both lunches from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. followed by a delicious lunch prepared by the Canonsburg Senior Center and delivered to our center by faithful volunteers. The program on January 10 is a speaker and guests from The Humane Society of Washington County. Speaker on January 24 will be from the Peters Township Ambulance Core.

If any new visitors wish to come (you must be a senior), they are always welcomed. Reservations for lunch are required; call 724-9416956.

On January 8, 15, and 22, we’ll be having catered lunches but there’ll be no meeting on January 29. We will have no covered-dish dinners until February. As usual, all of our meetings at the Finleyville Community Center start at 10 a.m. with meals served at noon.

Our Christmas party on December 18 at the Community Center was great.

The food catered to us by “Good to Go’” was excellent – couldn’t have been better.

Pennies for Pies Adds Up for Students at Ringgold Elementary School South

John McMillan Presbyterian Church Preschool is hosting a Registration Open House on Saturday, January 26 from 9 a.m. to noon. Parents may register children for the 2013-2014 classes, visit the classrooms, and meet the teachers.

John McMillan offers classes for children ages two through five.

Developmentally appropriate curriculum includes kindergarten readiness activities, art, music, and creative and outdoor play. The weekly Parent & Tot class is an opportunity for you and your two-year-old to enjoy a special time together. The three-year old classes meet twice a week and the four-year-old classes meet three days per week. Our four-day transition class is designed for the older preschool child who would benefit from another year of preschool prior to kindergarten. Peters Township Public Library Offers Free FAFSA Completion Session for College-Bound Students and Parents

Following RESS’ Pennies for Pies Challenge, Mr. Alvarez’s homeroom 241 celebrates a job well done.

The PTA of Ringgold Elementary School South (RESS) created a challenge this school year called “Pennies for Pies.” The 10-day collection of pennies served as a competition among students in kindergarten through grade 5 to see which homeroom could collect the most pennies to help buy pies and other items for local families during this holiday season. The school as a whole collected $906.75. The top three home rooms were Mr. Alvarez's 5th grade class, Mrs. Costa's 4th grade class, and Mrs. Boyer's fifth grade class. For their efforts, each homeroom received a board game for students to use during recess. RESS staff, family, and friends were amazed as the kids eagerly gathered so many pennies. Some bags only had a few coins, while other holders were stuffed to the top. Teamwork was evident, as everyone pitched in with the focus to help others in need in their community. RESS is very proud of its achievements!

The Peters Township Public Library will offer a free Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Completion Session on Tuesday, January 22 at 6:30 p.m.

This workshop, for college-bound seniors and their parents, provides the opportunity to get personalized help completing the FAFSA and the chance to ask questions related to the financial aid process. Session information will be provided by Jayeann Harr, Higher Education Access Partner of the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. Space is limited. Families should be aware of FAFSA filing deadlines for all schools being considered and meet the earliest date. The deadline for submitting the FAFSA to determine eligibility for a need-based Pennsylvania State Grant is May 1 or August 1 for first-time students entering programs of study at community colleges, business, trade or technical schools, and hospital schools of nursing. The FAFSA is used to determine if students qualify for almost all forms of need-based financial assistance, including the Pennsylvania State Grant, Federal Pell Grant, many scholarships, work-study programs, many school-based awards, and lowcost federal student loans.

This year's MCRS Advent Service Project is Silly Socks for Sick Kids. Our goal is to collect 500 new pairs of silly, colorful socks in all sizes to be distributed to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh and the Cleveland Clinic.

Seniors and retirees gathered in the Elizabeth High School cafeteria to enjoy breakfast and friendship.

The Elizabeth Forward School District hosted its 33rd Annual Senior Citizen and Retired Persons Holiday Program and Breakfast at EF High School on December 13, 2012 from 811 a.m. Students greeted the seniors, helped with parking, and escorted the guests to their seats. They also gave each senior an artwork mug designed by an EF elementary school student.

The High School Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Justin Turpin, performed holiday Guests enjoyed breakfast in the cafeteselections while guests enjoyed breakfast. ria while the high school orchestra played and students from the Spanish and French classes sang carols in these languages. Following breakfast, seniors enjoyed holiday performances in the auditorium by the Warrior Choir, 8th Grade Honors Chorus, and Greenock Elementary’s grade 3 students. The morning ended with a drawing for door prizes and a special award for the oldest senior in attendance, Bernice Allegre. St. Katharine Drexel School Readies for Catholic Schools Week St. Katharine Drexel School in Bethel Park, on the grounds of St. Germaine Parish, is gearing up for Catholic Schools Week, January 27-February 2. The week will begin with an open house from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. at the school. On January 26 and 27, students will speak to the various churches in the area about the value of a Catholic education. There will be a science fair during Catholic Eighth-grader Joey Belmont wins the Varsity Schools Week, with the projects on display all week. Other activities include a Class B Foul Shooting Championship at sock hop, spirit day, 9 a.m. mass on January 30, movie and popcorn afternoon, St. Mary Lyeum with 10/12 in. winter Olympics, the third annual International Food Day, and a Family Bingo Mania, open to the public on February 2 in the Nativity Cafeteria from 6-9 p.m. (doors open at 5:15 p.m.).

St. Francis “Giving Tree” Makes Christmas a Little Happier

Gifts for the needy abound thanks to St. Francis of Assisi Parish’s Ladies of Charities and its Giving Tree Program in Finleyville.

Mountains of Christmas gifts were donated to needy families thanks to St. Francis of Assisi parishioners in Finleyville and the church’s “Giving Tree” program. Each Christmas, the “Ladies of Charity” of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Finleyville organize this program. A Christmas tree is displayed in the church lobby and decorated with tiny tags bearing a description of someone needy (gender, age and gift category). As parishioners enter or leave the church, they can take a tag and, before Christmas, come back with a gift for the person fitting the description on their tag. The gifts are then sorted and delivered to a parish with a heavy population of needy families, and the remaining gifts go to the Finleyville Area Interfaith Council for distribution. Thanks to the St. Francis “Ladies of Charity“ and parishioners, Christmas will be just a little bit brighter for those in need.

The St. Francis “Ladies of Charity” extend their deepest thanks to the many gift donors and to the students who helped with all the gift sorting and preparations this year.

Family Worship Center of Pittsburgh Hosts Fire and Ice Family Nights

January Events at South Hills Assembly of God Church

Family Worship Center of Pittsburgh will host Fire and Ice Family Nights the second Saturday of every month from 7-10 p.m. at Iceoplex at Southpointe, 114 Southpointe Blvd., Canonsburg. Cost is $10 per person, $35 for a party of 4, $42 for party of 5, and $45 for party of 6. All prices include skating, skate rental, inflatables, coffee house, and face painting, or $2 for coffee house only, face painting/ice skating to Christian music, clown, and snacks. Ice skating from 8:30-10 p.m.; all other activities are 7-10 p.m.
