ink ribbons lined the streets of Charleroi for the 9th Annual Lois Orange Ducoeur Breast Cancer Walk on Saturday, October 13th with events beginning at 10 a.m. at the Charleroi Market House. Pink balloons were released in honor of survivors and in memory of all those lost. Then over 350 walkers took to the streets of Charleroi for the 1 or 2 mile fun walk. Proceeds from the event benefit cancer patients using the Charles L. & Rose Sweeney-

Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center at Monongahela Valley Hospital and the PA Breast Cancer Coalition. The perfect weather conditions along with the generosity of participants from all over the Mon Valley area combined to make this event a huge success. We would like to thank the many volunteers, sponsors and vendors who made this event possible and all of those who participated for your very generous donations.

The Greater Rostraver Chamber of Commerce and Rostraver Twp. Lions Club will partner again to host the annual Rostraver Twp. Christmas Celebration. This year’s event will be held Sunday, November 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. behind PNC Bank in the Rostraver Shopping Center. This outdoor event will feature a bonfire, visit with Santa, hot chocolate, children’s craft table, treats and more. Attendees are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots campaign.

Project Sweet Peas Wins $20,000 from Chase Community Giving Campaign and Gives Back to Tiniest Patients Project Sweet Peas, a non-profit working to provide comfort to families with children in neonatal intensive care units, recently won $20,000 in the Chase Community Giving program. Project Sweet Peas was one of 30,000 charities competing for a share of $5 million. Conducted exclusively through online voting, Project Sweet Peas received 2,950 votes, putting them in 60th place overall. To celebrate their winnings, the Pittsburgh Project Division donated specialty handmade Halloween costumes to nearly 250 children in the NICUs in Pittsburgh hospitals on October 26. President and Co-Founder Kate Crawford said, “These parents have little to no interaction with their child during their hospitalization, as they are often covered in tubes, wires and IVs. Something just as simple as being able to dress them up for Halloween gives them a feeling of normalcy, which brings them such joy.” The organization worked with Magee-Women’s Hospital of UPMC, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, Mercy Hospital and West Penn Hospital to accomplish this.

Community Action Southwest Seeks Tax Assistance Volunteers Community Action Southwest (CAS) is currently seeking volunteers in Washington and Greene counties for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. The program provides low-to-moderate income households with free tax filing services, protecting these residents from predatory or expensive filing services, and ensuring these families get the maximum return at no cost to them. CAS will offer VITA at various sites including Canonsburg, Charleroi, Donora and Washington in Washington County and in Carmichaels and Jefferson in Greene County. Sites will be open in February and March. Community members interested in assisting with this program are invited to attend an upcoming Volunteer Open House that will be offered at the following locations: • Thursday, November 8, 6–7 p.m. at the Community Action Southwest office in Waynesburg (58 East Greene Street).

• Tuesday, November 13, 4:30–5:30 p.m. at the John K. Tenner Library in Charleroi (638 Fallowfield Avenue) • Wednesday, November 14, 6–7 p.m. at the Community Action Southwest office in Washington (150 West Beau Street, Suite 304).

Charleroi American Legion Auxiliary Unit Prepares for Veterans’ Day The September meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 22 was called to order by President Darlene McBurnie with 18 members present.

Our Auxiliary Unit 22 received the following awards at the American Legion Dept. Convention in July: Children & Youth; Best Innovative Activity; National Security; Community Service; Give 10 to Education and a pin for Auxiliary Emergency Fund. We have already started our 2013 programs with the Americanism essay contest themed around the concept of “What Freedom Do I Most Enjoy?” at Charleroi Elementary and Middle School. The principals of Charleroi Elementary and Middle School were given a 23 minute video titled “What is a Veteran” to be shown at school before Veterans’ Day to help explain the reason for Veterans’ Day, why we should respect our flag and our military, and hopefully instill more patriotism in our youth.

The Auxiliary scholarships applications are in the Charleroi High School guidance office and available for any senior boy or girl planning to attend college. Last year, Charleroi senior Nicole Lynn Yakich received a $2400 scholarship from our unit and is now attending Pitt.

A motion passed to pay dues for ALA members Terri Suchy and Deb Krall in appreciation for their service to our country, and both are veterans that pay post dues.

June Wood, our Unit Gold Star mother, was acknowledged in observance of Gold Star Mothers on Sept. 30.

Deborah Krall, our Unit Chaplain, was honored by the American Red Cross at Consol Energy Center last month at their annual Heroes Breakfast.

She was interviewed on Channel 11 and had articles regarding this in the PostGazette and Greensburg Tribune Review.

The Charleroi PTA sent a card of thanks for our “Labels & Box Tops” donations to help purchase school equipment and supplies for students and we will continue collecting them for the next two years for the school.

We need help collecting pop and can tabs to purchase much-needed equipment for our local veterans’ homes and hospitals. These tabs may be left at Maple Creek Distributors and by recycling them, we are helping our veterans.

The tab are turned into our ALA council every 3 months for recycling.

We will be sending Christmas wreaths to the National Veterans Alleghenies Cemetery in Bridgeville and to the Civil War Veterans Section at West Newton Cemetery via the “Wreaths Across America” program.

The Monongahela Veterans Day Parade is November 10 and the Unit Christmas Party is Saturday, December 1.

Chaplain Krall closed the meeting with the Benediction and a social time followed.

Send Season’s Greetings to Military Heroes Although many people spend the holiday season in the company of close relatives and friends, many of the nation’s heroes can’t do the same. While military deployments and hospital stays may keep many service men and women away from their loved ones this season, the American Red Cross is doing its part to keep their holiday spirits high. The Red Cross will collect and distribute holiday cards that send words of encouragement, joy and cheer. Up until December 7, local residents can give something that truly means something by sending a holiday thank you card to show support for the members of the Armed Forces, veterans and their families. Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates Plan Veterans’ Day Parade The October meeting of the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates was opened by CO Bill Hess, followed by the playing of the Navy Hymn, the invocation by Chaplain Marshall Lignian, and the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence was held for our departed shipmate, Henry Venanzi. Cdr. Hess read a thank you note received from Donna Venanzi, along with a monetary donation to the Shipmates for the Two Bell Ceremony held for Venanzi.

A thank you message was read from the recording secretary of the Wreaths Across America, acknowledging the $750 donation the Shipmates made to purchase 50 wreaths. The WAC credited 25 wreaths to our donation of 50 wreaths, giving our organization a total of 75 wreaths that were purchased for use at the Allegheny National Cemetery.

Marshall Lignian reported that he has forms available for individual donations for the wreaths at a cost of $15/wreath and the deadline for submission is November 15. If you are available on December 15 at 1 p.m., volunteer help is needed to place the wreaths on the graves at the Allegheny Veteran Cemetery.

A chart made by George Essey of the members Navy Bio's was passed around for review and blank questionnaire forms were given to members who haven't submitted their information.

Requests for the Two Bell Services for deceased members of the Navy, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines is not being funneled to our organization. We have sent letters to the Valley Funeral Directors, made personal visits and have been calling them upon seeing obits in the papers, but it has been of no avail. The membership has been requested to bring this to the attention

of the funeral directors whenever they visit any funeral homes. You don't have to be a member of the Shipmates to receive the service as the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates dedicate it to any active, retired or veteran of the Navy, Coast Guard or Merchant Marine.

Joe Acton gave an update of the Mon Valley Vets council. The Veterans’ Day parade is on Saturday, November 10, not Sunday, November 11. Units are requested to be at the Chess Park at 9 a.m. with the parade to start at 2 p.m.

Myron Sepitko reported the trailer is available and that he has the banners and flags to go with it. The parade is from Chess Park to 1st St. The flag etiquette committee report was given by Marshall. The program has been given at 4 schools with 400 plus students, and 15 additional schools and 2 adult organizations have been confirmed for the rest of the year.

The nomination committee of George Essey, Eugene Maisano and Lawrence Masci read the following recommendation for the officers for calendar years 2013 - 14; CO-William Hess; XO- Barry Anders; Yeoman- James Caldwell; FOJoseph Acton; Sgt-At-Arms- Carl Pro; Chaplain- Rev. Fred Pfeil. Nominations will remain open until the next meeting when balloting will take place.

A motion was passed that upon the death of a member of the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmate Organization, a donation will be made in the member’s name to a library of the family designation.

The dismissal prayer was given by Chaplain Marshall Lignian and the meeting was adjourned until the next regular meeting on November 7. Being Election Day is Tuesday, November 6; the monthly meeting is moved to Wednesday.

Presidential Election Exhibit On Display at Cal U’s Manderino Library

Developed by Mon Valley educator Steve Russell, a 2012 Presidential Election Exhibit is on display at the Manderino Library on the campus of California University of Pennsylvania. Russell did a 1968 presidential exhibit at the University while he was a student there. Included in this present display is a letter from Senator Robert Kennedy to the students of the University in 1968, two weeks before his assassination. Monessen Community Development Corporation Hosts Community Christmas Interested in having breakfast with Mrs. Claus, decorating the community Christmas tree, participating in the holiday parade or looking at an old-fashioned train display? The Monessen Community Development Corporation (MCDC) is hosting a Community Christmas December 1, 2012.

THE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS INCLUDES: 10 a.m. – Free breakfast with Mrs. Claus at the Food Bank Building 11:30 a.m. - Parade participants will start to line up on Donner Avenue at the Food Bank 12 p.m. - Holiday parade (with featured guest appearance by Santa Claus). The parade route will go straight down Donner Ave. to the Community Christmas tree next to the Monessen Library.

12:30 p.m. - Join Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Community Christmas Tree for hot cocoa, provided by the Library, and cookies, along with trimming of the tree and singing Christmas carols.

Charleroi Parking Ticket Fees Increase The fee for parking tickets in Charleroi increased on Monday, October 15 for the first time in nearly 20 years. Meter amounts, most 25¢ for two hours, will not change. The former meter violation of $1 if paid within 24 hours ticket will increase to $2 if paid within 48 hours. The ticket then increases after 48 hours to $5 if paid within 20 days and $10 for tickets paid 21 or later days after being issued. Tickets are prosecuted at the magistrate office 28-30 days after being issued. Tickets for violating the sweeper service restrictions will remain $10 if paid within 20 days but will increase to $20 if paid 21 days or later. The increases were necessary to compensate for the costs of the actual ticket, administrative costs and mailings. New envelope style tickets will be used for drop off or mail in payments.

Tickets and meter revenues bring in a net profit of approximately $20,000 annually to the Borough budget.

GCFP’s District X Attends Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker Dedication Angie Raitano (l) of Carroll Twp. and Mary Jane Martucci (r) of Charleroi preside over the dedication of the new Blue Star Memorial Marker installed on October 6, 2012 at the Welcome Center on I- 70, Mount Morris, PA.

On Saturday, October 6, District X, which includes ten member clubs of The Garden Club Federation of PA, dedicated a Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker at the Welcome Center on Interstate 79 in Mount Morris, PA, to honor all US armed forces who have served, are serving, or will serve in the future.

In addition to local garden club members attending, there were Veterans of World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Desert Storm.

Mary Jane Martucci of Charleroi, District X director, welcomed those in attendance. An invocation was given by Mardell Page, District X chaplain. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Harold Weaver, commander of American Legion, Post 423, Masontown, PA. George Barnhart, finance officer of American Legion, Post 423, delivered brief remarks of appreciation. Dedication/Reflection remarks were given by Angela Raitano, District X Advisor and former president of Garden Club Federation of PA. “Taps” was played by Chris Menear and the “Echo” was played by Doronda Gaynor. Martucci made the official presentation of the marker to Pam Snyder, Greene County Commissioner, who accepted it on behalf of Greene County. A benediction was followed by all singing “America the Beautiful.”

The Blue Star Memorial Marker Project, inaugurated in 1944 by New Jersey Garden Clubs, included the planting of 6,000 dogwood trees as a highway beautification project to greet the men and women who returned from World War II. It was a living memorial to honor all who had fought in the war. The project quickly spread to garden clubs throughout the country and, in 1951, the National Council of State Garden Clubs expanded the program to include all veterans.

The state of Pennsylvania has 58 markers, placed along highways, in parks, at historic sites, and various public places. The markers are symbols of our appreciation for our armed forces and reminders that freedom must not be taken for granted.

Bentleyville Public Library Schedules November Programs The Board of Trustees of the Bentleyville Public Library will meet at the library Thursday, November 8 at 7 p.m. Library issues will be discussed and the public is encouraged to attend.

The Friends of the Bentleyville Public Library annual jewelry sale will be held at the library Friday, November 9 at 10 a.m. or for those with early bird registration at 9:30 a.m. for a cost of $5 which may be paid at the door. The sale will also continue Saturday November 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Friends are still accepting donations of jewelry at the library. Monongahela Area Library Plans November Programs The Friends of the Monongahela Area Library will host a program on Thursday, November 8, at 7 p.m. covering some of the features and advantages of three of the popular e-readers and small tablets available today. Titled “Kindle, Nook and Wantages or limitations a product might have given the intended use of the e-reader or tablet. The purpose of the event is to help library patrons select which product might be best for them or their loved one when shopping this holiday season. Included will be how to use a Washington County library card to borrow books and audiobooks from the Waggin website. The program is free and open to the public. No advance reservations are required.

The Monongahela Area Library Friends are currently accepting registration for their November fund raiser, “Pet Pictures with Santa.” Grilli Studios will be on hand at the library on Saturday, November 17 from 9 a.m. to noon for pictures of your four-footed best friend with Santa Claus. Children or adults may also be included in the photo, but the picture must have a pet. The cost is $20 with two different package options.

Longtime Monongahela Librarian Retires West Newton Schedules 12th Annual Miracle on Main Street Festival Downtown West Newton Inc. will be hosting its 12th Annual Miracle on Main Street Festival on November 24 from 3:00 to 8:30 p.m. The event will take place on Main Street from S. 4th St. to Water St. and on S. 2nd St. and N. 2nd St. The Christmas parade starts at 5:15 p.m. on Main Street followed by wagon rides. The event includes crafters and vendors located in the LaGrande banquet room on S. 2nd St, The West Newton Senior Center, and the First United Methodist Church on N. 2nd St. We will have plenty of food vendors on the streets. CAHS, Inc. Welcomes Antiques Road Show Appraiser The October meeting of the Charleroi Area Historical Society, Inc. was held on October 15th and was opened by Program President Beth Perret, who welcomed all the friends of the Society to the last program meeting for the year. Perret turned the meeting over to the Vice President and Coordinator of Society programs, Lois Hawe.

Hawe gave a gracious introduction for Bob DeCroo, an appraiser for Pittsburgh's Antiques Road Show and glass collector. He told the story of how as a very young fellow he was a collector and “treasure hunter” and that he enjoyed going and searching for all kinds of items that were buried. He spoke about attic finds, night soil, time capsules, master mold makers, the reason for the differences in glass color, how glass can become "sick", and how chemicals in soil can make differences in the glass and what to do about it.

Further, he pointed out the "eye appeal" that product advertisers had designed into their bottles and through their shapes, such as log cabins, animal shapes, Indians, and how all of these things help to tell the story of America.

After his humorous and informative segment of the meeting, he took several questions, after which Perret began a short business meeting and made several announcements. She showed the members a piece of steel jewelry made in Allenport, owned by Gerry Byron, and another was shown, owned by Jean Bruce. Larry Cowell was recognized for donating a large US flag for use at the Goaziou Print Shop.

Earlier in October, Nikki Sheppick also was asked to give a presentation on Charleroi's National Register of Historic Places Historic District, explaining the size and import of the district to the town, as well as why it is so vital to have proper code enforcement to protect, rehab, preserve and restore the buildings. She explained how the Historic District can be put to use for the citizens, rather than being demolished, as 22 more buildings are being proposed right now. Perret asked Sheppick to give an update on the "Save the Coyle" Project. Sheppick shared that cleaning up and painting

was completed by some of the newly re-organized Friends of the Coyle and Washington County FITS workers.

This is also an in-depth inventory of MMVCT assets that is on-going to determine what will be included in a Charity Auction to Benefit the Coyle, which is proposed to happen sometime before Thanksgiving, with more information to be announced later.

Perret shared the information accumulated for the Society's Annual End of the Year Dinner, to be held at Anthony's on the Mon for the November Society Luncheon meeting. The menu was discussed and other decisions were made for the proposed event. Leota Voelker displayed the Martinet history book and members were urged to try and get others to purchase more to help raise funds for the John K. Tener Library.

A name raffle was held and Larry Cowell won an autumn colored floral arrangement, after which he was asked to say grace before the monthly social hostesses, Perret and Voelker, invited everyone to partake from the Autumn and Halloween motif refreshment table.

Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Staff Surpasses Fundraising Goal The Hearts That Care employee fundraising campaign at Monongahela Valley Hospital exceeded its goal of $175,000 to a whopping $317,000, more than 80% above its goal.

Created to help upgrade the hospital’s heating and cooling systems in patient rooms, the employee giving campaign in September was another phase of MVH’s $2.5 million Focus on the Future Capital Campaign, which supported the hospital’s $25 million construction and renovation project.

Donora Historical Society Presents Holiday Décor; Gifts In case you missed it, our historical presentation in October was centered on sports and leisure and its role in the early development of the town of Donora in the late 1800s and the first half of the 1900s. It focused also on how the townspeople entertained themselves away from work in the steel mills.

Our historical presentation scheduled for November will be with Tribune Review and Valley Independent writer Ron Paglia, who will expound on some the subjects that he has written about of Donora, namely Palmer Park and the Legion Field. Old photos will accompany the discussion and will be used to spur questions and answers.

For photography enthusiasts, in November, look for the December issue of the Shutterbug Magazine and the article about the Donora Historical Society and one of our projects where we had almost 200 glass plate negatives developed from our Bruce Dreisbach collection, using a grant from the Washington County Community Foundation to complete that task. We’re very proud of this project and the pictures that were developed have already been used in a variety of ways at the museum, on our website and in presentations.

If you missed out on our September presentation that featured author Kathleen Shoop, who discussed her book titled After the Fog, we will be selling her book at the museum on a permanent basis. The novel is over 400 pages and costs only $15.

The book is a novel of historical fiction based on the factual events of Donora’s 1948 smog disaster as told through fictional nurse Rose Pavlesic. This will make an ideal Christmas present for people with ties to Donora or any other industrial mill town.

The Donora Historical Society is now taking orders for Christmas wreaths, garland or roping, candy canes and crosses. The wreaths, candy canes and crosses are made of frasier fir, come with a waterproof red velvet bow, and are dipped in an anti-transparent to preserve needle retention. The wreaths measure two feet in diameter and are $15. The candy canes and crosses are very full and sturdy and are $17. Pickup will be at the Donora Smog Museum and Historical Society during Thanksgiving week – November 21st, 23rd and 24th.

There will not be any formal historical presentations for December and January due to the holiday season, however, the museum will still be open for you to do some Christmas shopping. We carry a wide array of books, apparel and mementos at the museum.

Memorial for Those Who Served Local Firefighters Honor Their Fallen Brothers

Each year during National Fire Prevention Week, firefighters gather at memorial services to honor their brothers and sisters who have passed on – some in the line of duty. The memorial service for Washington County Area Firefighters was held at the Washington County Firemen’s Association Training Facility near Houston, PA. The ceremony was held on Sunday, October 7, honoring men who passed away during 2011. Also honored were firefighters from outside Washington County having reciprocal coverage arrangements with Washington County departments.

The memorial sits below a grass-covered hillside adjacent to the training area and is fronted by a walkway of bricks engraved with the names of firefighters in memory of their service. At least eight fire departments, including Finleyville, Charleroi and Donora were in attendance. Service motorcycle clubs, the Red Knights (Chapter 13) and Blue Knights (Chapter 16), also attended.

Washington County Commissioner Harlan Schober and Pastor Brent Furlong were guest speakers. The color guard led by bagpiper David Olson passed under the aerial ladders of two fire trucks supporting a large American flag as they approached the memorial site. Valarie Schnore, singing the “Star Spangled Banner,” and WCFA President Michael McBride Jr. opened the ceremony. Other speakers were

WCFA Chaplain William Klamorick. It was a moving ceremony during which a bell tolled for each of the names called out and added to the honor roll. A white carnation also was placed in a fireman’s boot. WCCF Appoints Allocations & Programs Coordinator The Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF) is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Campbell as its allocations & programs coordinator.

As the allocations & programs coordinator, Campbell is responsible for the management of the Foundation’s allocation cycles, which include grants to charities and educational scholarships for students. He will also assist advisors to donor advised funds in recommending grants to the Board of Trustees.

Additionally, Campbell is responsible for the facilitation of community programs as approved Matthew Campbell by the Board. His initial program focus will be to help qualifying 501(c)(3) charities prepare for WCCF Gives, a community-wide Day of Giving scheduled for September 10, 2013.

Previously, Campbell was employed as visitor services manager for the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum. He is an honors graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and resides in Washington, PA.

2. Looking at houses before you know what you can reasonably afford. If you have not taken the time to speak to a lender and become pre-approved, you may consider properties that are beyond your means. It is more difficult to be satisfied when you have your sights set higher than you can afford. Speak to a mortgage lender and allow them to help you determine your true purchasing power before beginning your home search.

3. Spending the maximum you are permitted to borrow. Avoid becoming “house poor”. This is your first house. Most people start small and grow into bigger and better homes over years as their earnings grow and the first house appreciates in value. Also, after closing you will want to decorate or furnish the property as well as have some discretionary income left after payments, maintenance and unexpected repairs.

4. Making an insultingly low offer. You may think that because a home was foreclosed on or has been on the market a while that you can “get a good deal” or even a “great steal” by offering well below asking price. The fact is that this strategy seldom works. Most often your offer will be flat out rejected because the seller is so insulted they will not negotiate. You end up with nothing but disappointment and lose the house you want.

Hesitating to make an offer when you find the right home. We understand that buying your first home is a major life decision, but you are not the only buyer in the marketplace. The odds are that if you think this is the right home, some else may think so, too. Taking too long to

make up your mind can cost you the right house at the right time. When you find that home that works for you and your budget, make your offer!

Trying to achieve perfection. Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a “perfect” house. There is however an “ideal” home for you. Homes in every price range will have flaws, including new construction—the results of a general home inspection will always prove this to be true. Sellers will negotiate about significant safety risks and code violations but do not expect them to repair every little minor or inexpensive issue.

Avoiding the paperwork. Remember that when you are making your loan application, the lender will require proof of everything! You might be pre-approved, but that is not the final step in the loan application process. If the lender asks for bank statements, W-2’s, and any other type of documentation, please supply it to them as soon as possible.

Your closing may be delayed or final approval of the loan denied because the lender did not receive required documentation.

Should You 'Winterize' Your Pet? (BPT) - The arrival of autumn signals many changes in the household, from switching from salads to soups to pulling sweaters out of storage to changing furnace filters. With pets, however, you may need to think as much about what you don't change as what you do.

Chicago veterinarian Dr. Shelly Rubin is well acquainted with the dramatic temperature swings that accompany the change of seasons, as well as how to help pets and owners cope with them.

Following is his list of fall do's and don'ts for pet owners.

• Don't “fall” off the exercise wagon. With days getting shorter - and cooler - it can be tempting to skip your early morning or evening walk. But with more than half of all pets in the U.S. being overweight or obese, exercise is vital. A daily walk, or several shorter walks, can rev the metabolism of both two- and four-legged walkers for hours.

• Do ensure your pet is outfitted for cooler weather. Small, light-bodied breeds, dogs with very short hair and older dogs with weakened immune systems are likely to need a sweater when venturing outside. And once cold and snowy weather sets in, dogs may require protective footwear to keep their paw pads from freezing.

• Don't assume that cooler weather eliminates the threat of diseases like heartworm, which are spread by infected mosquitoes. Mosquitoes have been known to survive well into the winter months, thanks to indoor havens and protected microclimates existing within larger, cooler climate zones. For this reason, the American Heartworm Society recommends year-round heartworm protection for both dogs and cats.

• Do ensure your senior pet has a warm, draft-free place to sleep. Many older dogs and cats suffer from arthritis. Just as sore joints in people tend to feel worse in cold weather, so it is with pets. A warm cozy bed can make nights - and mornings - more comfortable.

• Do be sensitive to your pets' feelings if fall brings changes to your household.

Just like people, pets can get depressed. And if you're missing a son or daughter who has moved away to start college or a job, chances are your family pet is also feeling the loss. Local Worship CWCC Spends October Meeting with MVCC Residents The Mon Valley Care Center was the site for the October 1,2012 meeting of the Catholic Women’s College Club. There were 33 residents present to play bingo games with the C.W.C.C. members. Numerous prizes were awarded, refreshments were served and the Halloween atmosphere was enjoyed by everyone. The residents were very grateful for the members sharing their time and gifts.

Margie Pankiewicz,chairwoman for the October meeting, thanked everyone for making a memorable evening for the residents. She reminded members it is the month on the Rosary. Pankiewicz mentioned that October 1 is the feast day of St. Theresa of the Little Flower.She read about the saint’s miracles and all members were given a holy card in her recognition with a prayer written in her honor.

The business meeting of the club followed with President Susan Gessner calling the meeting to order. The ladies recited the words to the song “How Great Thou Art,”reflecting this month’s theme, Awe and Wonder.

Vice President Camilla Ferrara called roll. Minutes were read by secretary Jo Anna Stroh. Treasurer Sally Keeney gave her report. A discussion of the club’s funds followed her report. Correspondence was read by Stroh.

Standing committee reports were given. Telephone chairwoman Georgetta Wiles reminded members to please return phone calls regarding meeting reservations.

Wiles, chairwoman for the November meeting, informed the members that the November meeting will be held on November 5 at 6 p.m. at the Epiphany Chapel on Pennsylvania Blvd. in Monessen. A mass of remembrance will be celebrated by Fr. Michael Crookston. In lieu of non-perishable items for the food bank, members are asked to bring monetary donations for the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Monessen.

Public recitation of the rosary will be held at noon on October 13 across the country to support the America Needs Fatima Campaign. The local sites for this special cause are Chess Park in Monongahela and City Park in Monessen.

The Hail Mary was prayed for ill members.

The gifts of the month were guardian angel keepsakes in honor of the Guardian Angel feast day celebrated on October 2. Camilla Ferrara was the gift recipient.

Gessner ended the meeting with the prayer titled “Sowing the Seeds of Harvest.”

A New Church for a New Day Charleroi Church Moves to New Property in Rostraver Twp. The corner of Route 51 South and Fells Church Road now boasts a brand new building. The building is “a new church for a new day.” Gospel Alliance Church, founded in Charleroi, PA, invites the community to the grand opening of their new church building, Sunday, November 4, 2012 located at 1011 Fells Church Road in Rostraver Twp. The Grand Celebration will be held during both services at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Stop in and visit a growing church that still has the friendly warmth and feel of a small church.

Gospel Alliance Church, a Christian and Missionary Alliance church, started with about a dozen people meeting in the basement of Rego’s Restaurant in 1989.

About a year later, the church purchased a building on Washington Ave. Completely outgrowing that building in 1996, another building was purchased.

Growing to over 200 people attending, it was time to relocate again. The property at Route 51 and Fells Church Road became available and a new building was planned. That new building is complete and has room for further expansion as necessary.

As a Bible-believing church, the congregation has been blessed by excellent pastors and teachers who adeptly convey the Word of God. There is Sunday school (9:30 a.m. on Sundays) and Bible studies for adults (Sundays and weekdays).

Gospel Alliance Church is children focused, with many children’s ministries and activities including Sunday school, AWANA, a staffed nursery, all which include safe-place policies.

Mike Easler to Speak at Pricedale Union Church Pricedale Union Church, located at 203 Johnson Ave. in Belle Vernon, will host a “Sinners Only” breakfast meeting on Saturday, November 10 at 9 a.m.

This meeting will feature none other than Mike “The Hitman” Easler of the 1979 Championship Pittsburgh Pirates. Easler enjoyed a 14-year career as a major league outfielder, spending his 7 most productive years from 1977 – 1983 as a Pirate. Following his role as an active player, he went on to carve out a career in management and coaching.

He coached with the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals. Currently Easler is with the New York Mets in their minor league system.

In addition to Easler’s baseball fame, he is also a dedicated Christian and an ordained minister. Easler’s testimony is bound to be a moving story that will thrill Christians as well as baseball fans.

There will be a $10 charge collected at the door, to cover Mr. Easler’s travel expenses as well as breakfast. He will sign autographs for any fans with baseballs or cards without any charge.

BVA’s First United Methodist Afterschool Program a Good Time The First United Methodist Church of Belle Vernon has introduced the unique Bible- based Pioneer Clubs® after school program for children in grades 15 at Marion Elementary and Rostraver Elementary in the Belle Vernon Area school district. It is a mixture of Sunday School and scouting components that

help children learn Bible-based values and truths.

The Bug Fest kick off parties held on October 9 and 10 at each school provided students and caregivers the opportunity to sample a typical session of Pioneer Clubs®. Bug Hunt, Make-YourOwn Bug Race and special Bible exploration were part of the opening day festivities.

The program continues weekly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at Marion and Rostraver schools, respectively.

Singing, snack time, games and other fun activities such as outdoor cooking, friendship skills, toy making, hygiene skills, mission work and nature crafts will be introduced as part of the curriculum. Children earn badges at a ceremony after completing the various tasks.

Surgeon Performs Mon Valley Hospital’s First Total Ankle Replacement Kathleen Miller of Hiller, PA, discovered firsthand how the community benefits from expert physicians and surgeons on the staff at Monongahela Valley Hospital. In September, Kathleen was one of the first people to have total ankle replacement surgery outside of Pittsburgh in Southwestern PA — and the first person to have this surgery at Monongahela Valley Hospital.

Kathleen, who is a state parole agent, had no reservations about being the first person to have a total ankle replacement at Monongahela Valley Hospital.

“I had been looking into ankle surgery for sometime,” she said. “I went to other doctors for their opinions about what would be best for my ankle before I went to The Orthopedic Group and met Dr. DeCarbo. He made me feel like he was treating me as a whole person — I was not just another ankle.”

Kathleen returned to Dr. DeCarbo’s office in the Spartan Medical Facility, in Carroll Twp., 10 days following her surgery. At that time, her foot was placed in a non-weight bearing cast. As her healing progresses, she will eventually be transitioned to a boot walker then physical therapy. The entire recovery process is expected to be three or four months.

Dr. DeCarbo identifies the ideal candidate for total ankle replacement as a person who has end stage osteoarthritis of the ankle, usually posttraumatic arthritis and is not overweight. Most people who seek this surgery are middle-aged and lead more sedentary lifestyles.

Mon Valley Hospital’s Center for Children’s Rehabilitation Services Celebrates 5th Anniversary Monongahela Valley Hospital’s (MVH) Center for Children's Rehabilitation (CCR) Services recently celebrated five years of helping children in the Mon Valley.

During that time, the MVH CCR has treated hundreds of children from birth to age 21 for conditions such as apraxia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, developmental delays, Down syndrome, fine and gross motor skill delays, neuromuscular and neurological conditions, orthopedic disorders, pervasive developmental disabilities, sensory integration disorders, speech/language delays and disorders as well as swallow(l-r) Michelle Fell, OTR; Declan Blair; and Nancy ing disorders.

McAuley, SLP and Rehab Supervisor.

The MVH CCR has active patients from Washington, Fayette, Westmoreland and Allegheny counties, among others. Services include speech, occupational therapy and physical therapy. Patients must have a prescription from a physician to receive service and most insurances are accepted.

MVH CCR is committed to the medical, educational, and emotional needs of children/adolescents and their families and provides innovative and comprehensive programming to help each child obtain the best life possible.

Ringgold School Board Back at Full Strength Judge Appoints Maureen Ott to Fill Vacant Seat

Dateline: October 2, 2012 As promised, after hearing testimony from three petitioners seeking to fill the Ringgold School Board Region 3 seat vacated by the death of William Ellis, Judge Janet Moschetta Bell made her choice late yesterday. She appointed Nottingham Township resident Maureen Ott. It turns out a sarcastic remark made

by Board Director Larry Mauro during a particularly heated exchange several months ago has come to pass: “You [Ott] have been interrupting this board so much, you should be sitting up here with us.” Ott has attended all of the Board meetings and has been a very vocal critic of the reopening and reno-

vation of the two old buildings in Monongahela and Donora to house Ringgold’s middle school students—a plan that has been described by five separate architect /engineering firms as a bad decision.

Ott appeared before Judge Bell at a public hearing last week with a petition with over 300 signatures, a resolution of support from the Union Township Board of supervisors, and letters of support from Supervisors of Nottingham Township. Her support docket and history of volunteer work with students exceeded that of the other two candidates, Kimberly Hrubes and former board member Cherie Curdie. James Trax and Dr. Michael Ghilani had withdrawn their names from consideration prior to the hearing.

Ringgold Stalemate Ended School Board Closes MEC and DEC Buildings

Dateline: October 17, 2012 The ninth seat on the Ringgold school Board was occupied this evening by Maureen Ott, bringing the Ringgold School Board to its full complement of nine Directors.

Washington County Common Pleas Court appointed Ott to fill the seat when the divided board could not agree on a replacement for this seat, vacated due to the death of William Ellis. Ott, who attended and spoke at every school board meeting, clearly opposes the extensive renovation of the deteriorating Monongahela Elementary Center and Donora Elementary Center. Her appointment finally provided the vote needed to break a 4/4 stalemate on any motion regarding new facilities planning.

Board President Charles Smith, who along with Directors Robert Smith, Gene Kennedy and Larry Mauro, who had been pushing for over a year to have the MEC and DEC buildings renovated and reopened, saw their advantage slip away with the appointment of Ott. At the outset of the meeting, Director Bill Stein floored a motion to rescind all prior motions to perform any work on the MEC and DEC buildings. Ignoring standard meeting protocol, President Smith would not take a vote on the motion, promising they would address it after other regular business. This resulted in a shouting match and a call to a point of order by Ott, which Smith ignored.

After regular business was completed, a discussion ensued over a perceived shortage of gym space for the upcoming basketball season.

Ringgold Homecoming Emily Anderson and Richard Heinzelman Crowned Queen and King

Homecoming ceremonies at Ringgold Rams Joe Montana Stadium couldn’t have been better unless they could have included a win for the Ringgold Rams Football Team. The Rams lost to West Mifflin 47-20. Nevertheless, it was a beautiful evening and the ceremony went off smoothly. To top everything off, John Fedko (WPXI TV) was at the Queen Emily Anderson and King game and joined the Ram’s Pound with Richard Heinzelman. all the craziness he usually brings.

The elected queen was Emily Anderson and her court included Leanne Fries, Alexa Forlini, Victoria Helmantoler and Madison Cusic. The King was Richard Heinzelman, and his attendants included George Chettle, Matt Devenney, Chase Taylor and Nygel Vann.

Ringgold High School Principal Dwayne Homa was on hand to oversee the crowning by last year’s queen Kendalyn Sypolt. 2011 King Lane Poziviak was also at the ceremony. Ringgold Homecoming Bonfire

It’s been a tradition for quite a few years to have an outdoor pep rally and bonfire before the Ringgold homecoming game. This year was no different. As dusk approached on Tuesday, September 25, the Carroll Township Volunteer Fire Department touched off a huge pile of shipping skids (a controlled burn). In about 15 minutes, flames were shooting skyward and the warmth from the blaze could be felt all over the school parking lot. The band Carroll Township firemen create and control the huge bonfire. was there as were the varsity, JV and middle school cheerleaders. Team members from all levels of the school district from varsity to midget football were also there. A grill was set up, and hot dogs and soft drinks were available. The band performed, and the cheerleaders got the wound up for the game. Coach Humbert introduced some of the varsity players, who had a few words to say to their classmates. It was a nice kickoff for homecoming week.

SPORTS Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame Meeting Acknowledges Appreciation of Inductees; Scholar Athletes During Oct. Meeting The Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame met in executive session on October 9. Board members include Chairman Dennis Stitch, Vice Chairman Bill Kubin, Andrew Solan, Edward Repka, Thomas Evans, Roberta Bergstedt, Richard Bucchianeri, Jimmy Chacko and Paul Rach. Thomas Jenkins is the recording secretary and Steve Russell General Chairman.

First order of business was to approve the minutes from the board meeting of April 10 and the treasury report. The next banquet is slated for Friday June 21, 2013 at The Willow Room in Rostraver Twp. The banquets are schedule yearly the 3rd Friday of June.

Nominations were made for the 2013 Appreciation Award.

Communications were read from Ron Paglia, who expressed the sentiments of 2012 inductee Ben Jones as overwhelmed by the honor and the news releases. Board member Chacko indicated he received a letter from another inductee, Casper Voithofer, on the honor afforded him. The family of longtime selection committee member Bob Petriello, who was himself inducted in 1969, thanked the Hall of Fame Board for their graciousness at the time of his passing and keeping his memory alive.

Students who attended the summer banquet sent messages of thankfulness for the honor as scholar athletes. The 2012 scholar athlete honorees from 9 school districts in the immediate area all attended the banquet.

The PA State Hall of Fame induction banquet will be held on November 10 at the Sheraton North in Cranberry Twp. with local inductees Dale Hamer and Sam Havrilak joining the remaining honorees, including Jim Leyland, Mel Blount, and “Jimbo Covert.”

The Board with regrets accepted the resignation of selection committee member Reid Smith, who served the position with superior knowledge of potential candidate insight. Selection Committee appointments were made to fill the vacancies of Petriello and Reid with Stan “Nunnie” Milchovich and Bill Hughes approved. Acknowledged was the recent passing of two Hall of Fame

inductees, Dick Fields ’98, and Joe Sarra ’01. Dennis Stitch was reappointed as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

The Board acknowledged appreciation from the community for their support of the Hall of Fame.
