Charleroi Pre-Teen Establishes Toy Drive for Local Families in Need

iddle school student Madison Huschak may seem too old to care much about toys, but that isn’t stopping her from collecting them this holiday season. The 6th grader at Charleroi Middle School started a toy drive she named Mad4Giving; Madison has a goal of collecting 100 new toys from Nov. 15 – Dec. 15 to be distributed to local families in need. Madison originally wanted to just have a Christmas party where people who were invited would come with a toy to donate, and the idea grew from there. “I wanted to do something that would make Christmastime better for people in need,” she said. “She’s such a sweet girl with such a good soul,” Jennifer Huschak, Madison’s mother, said. “For being so young, she’s so aware of her surround-

ings. We’re so proud.” Jennifer said when she asked Madison – who named the toy drive after herself – where she got the idea for a toy drive in the first place, Madison explained that she understands that not everyone lives like she does, but everyone deserves to have a nice Christmas. The Huschaks decided that having a toy drive would be a good idea. Local businesses seem to think this is a good idea, too – Salatino’s River House Café on McKean Ave. in Charleroi, Knick Knacks and Paddy Wacks on W. Main Street in Monongahela, and Paolo's Pizza and Pastaria on Fallowfield Ave. in Charleroi have all established Mad4Giving donation boxes where toys can be dropped off through the 15th. Once collected, the toys will be taken to Charleroi School District, where they will be distributed through the venues

they collect for during the holiday season. This way, the donations will truly stay within the local community. Anything left will go to Toys for Tots. Epoch Sleep Disorders Center’s 2nd Annual Bedding Drive will be held through December 14, 2012. Donations will be accepted at Epoch Sleep Disorders Center; McKnight Medical; Hey Andy's; SWMC Charleroi; Willow Car Wash; and Charleroi, Frazier, and Belle Vernon Middle/High Schools. Please participate in this bedding drive. We are collecting new sheets, pillowcases, comforters, pillows, pajamas, etc. All collected items will be donated to children in need in our local communities and to the Hurricane Sandy relief project.

Monessen Resident Thanks Community for Efforts in Locating Lost Dog Dear Editor, I would like to thank the community of Monessen. On Tuesday, November 13 at 9 p.m. our mini pinscher, Hunter, escaped from his harness into the woods behind us on Althelia. For the next 20 hours, the entire community pitched in to help us find him. Local boys searched the woods and cemetery and fellow dog owners walked their dogs sniffing and carrying treats. The mayor, city administrator, garbage men, mail lady, and local police all kept their eyes and ears open. Neighbors posted his picture on Facebook and helped distribute flyers. The new owners of Libby's posted his picture in the window. We took calls all afternoon of sightings and finally around 5:30, he crawled out from his hiding spot on Althelia and into my mother-in-law’s lap. We couldn't have caught the little escape artist without the community support and we really want to thank them publicly. Bonni Smiley, Monessen

Donora Historical Society Hosts Successful Walking Tour; Presents at Heinz History Center Although somewhat cloudy, it was a 72 -degree perfect weather day for our 2nd annual Cement City Walking Tour and presentation on Sunday afternoon, October 14th. We hosted 26 people, most of which were from out of town. We started with a slide presentation on Donora’s National Historic District – Thomas Edison’s Cement City, and then showed artifacts and original blueprints during the construction from 1916 and 1917. The slide presentation included photos from Donora’s favorite original photographer – Bruce Dreisbach. A walking tour followed in the Historic District to point out various architectural details and concluded inside an actual Cement City home that has rooms restored to the period. Apple cider and cookies were served at the museum. It was a full afternoon and a good time was had by all. Also in October, the Donora Historical Society presented at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh as part of the Environmental Teen Town Hall & National Youth Summit on the Dust Bowl that took place on October 17th. The subject of the Dust Bowl is the latest documentary project by Ken Burns. As one of three presenters of man-made industrial disasters, Smog Museum Curator Brian Charlton presented an overview of the 1948 Smog. The Teen Town Hall was part of a larger live webcast with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C and Mr. Burns as part of the National Youth Summit. For three days at the beginning of November, we hosted Pioneer Productions from London, England, who is in the process of making a documentary on our 1948 Smog incident. Documentaries on this subject are nothing new for the Society as we have done

the same for PBS – “A Rumor of Blue Sky,” the Weather Channel – “When Weather Changed History – Killer Smog” and most recently, the Travel Channel – “Mysteries at the Museum.” We expect to meet with Pioneer within the next month or two to get this project off the ground. We expect the project with Pioneer Productions to last into next year. More information is to follow as the project progresses. For photography enthusiasts, look for the December issue of the Shutterbug Magazine and the article about the Donora Historical Society and one of our projects where we had 200 glass plate negatives developed from our Bruce Dreisbach collection using a grant from the Washington County Community Foundation. We’re very proud of this project and the pictures that were developed have already been used in a variety of ways at the museum, on our website and in presentations. There will not be any formal historical presentations for December and January due to the holiday season; however, the museum will still be open for you to do some Christmas shopping. We carry a wide array of books, apparel and mementos at the museum. Donora Fire Company Holds Toy Drive The Donora Fire Company is hosting its first Toys for Tots drive called "Stuff A Fire Truck." It runs through December 15th. The firefighters will be manning the station on Friday and Saturday evenings from 4 - 10 p.m. and during the week from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. You can drop toys off at the fire station at any of these times! Bentleyville Public Library’s Annual Jewelry Sales Net More than $1,000 Profit By Alice Harris

The Friends of Bentleyville Public Library raised over $1,400 at their annual jewelry sale held on November 9, 2012 at the Library in Bentleyville. The Friends collect jewelry all year. Much of the jewelry is costume, but a good amount of fine jewelry comes in, also. Members meet over the year to clean and put to the jewelry to good order to be ready for the annual sale. Each year the sale's popularity has increased and this year, early bird shopping was offered a half hour early for $5. A half price sale was also offered beginning at noon. Monies raised fund library programs over the year. The Friends plan to add purses and scarves to their 2013 sale. Anyone wishing to donate items for next year's sale can drop then off at the Bentleyville Library.

Shortened Hours during One Week We will be open for reduced hours the week of December 9 - 15, 2012. Regular hours are in effect Monday, December 10, but Tuesday - Thursday the library will open at 4 p.m. and close at 7 p.m. Normal hours resume on Friday. In order that patrons will not incur overdue charges because they cannot make it to the library during the shortened days, no items will be due from December 8 - 17th. Lock 4 Volunteer Fire Department Ready for Breakfast with Santa Annual Breakfast Also Benefits Needy Children By Earl Bugaile

The Lock 4 Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 8 at 9 a.m. in the Fire Department Social Hall. Each year, the Breakfast with Santa gives members of the fire department funds to purchase toys for children of the community which are delivered by fire truck every Christmas Eve. Food for the breakfast is donated from various businesses, and all of the proceeds are used to support the toy drive. Cost of the Breakfast with Santa is $5/adults and $4/children. The menu includes eggs, sausage, hash browns and home-made pancakes. Drinks are also provided. Children and adults will be entertained with Christmas music by DJ Pat, and all children attending will receive a free photo with Santa, along with a special treat. Bentleyville Recreation Dedicates New Building at Richardson Park By Alice Harris

It was a summer of hard work for members of the Bentleyville Recreation Board in efforts to get Richardson Park to good shape for the enjoyment of the community. Roy and Marie Larimer, along with other Recreation Board and community members and Park Attendant Junior Councilman Stan Glowaski, Marie Larimer, and Wilson, spent many long Councilman Roy Larimer open the doors to show the hours constructing new foot inside at the dedication of the newly finished recreation bridges, painting, and doing building at Richardson Park. All three spent many long general repairs.They also hours over summer working on Richardson Park. added new lighting, security cameras, and drinking fountains. Richardson Park has ballfields, a walking path, and playgrounds. A new building was also erected to use for holiday events including Easter, the Fourth of July, Halloween, and Christmas. It will be also used to store supplies. The newly finished building and a beautiful Richardson Park were dedicated on October 13, 2012.

Charleroi Area Historical Society, Inc. Recognizes Contributors for 2012 The CAHS, Inc. members gathered and were welcomed by President Beth Perret at Anthony's on the Mon for the November End-Of-Year-Dinner Meeting. Leota Voelker led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Perret made some announcements and recognized those who had perfect attendance for the year: Nikki Sheppick, LaVerne Williams, Larry Cowell, and Leota Voelker. Under special recognition was Vicki Moleski for taking care of the Society's finances and Lois Hawe for the wonderful yearly programs. Also, the candy "Guess the Number" contest with Santa Claus Lois Hawe receiving a thank you bouquet of containers were won by Sheppick and roses for her work in getting quality and Mary Rockwell. The following won educational programs for the year of 2012. bagged gifts: Linda Benini, Moleski, Karen Jurzcak, Gene Sarninski, Regis Carroll, and Ken Thompson. Sheppick explained the slate of officers for the new year as being the same with the exception of the Treasurer still remaining undetermined and the remaining officers were voted in unanimously. After having a wonderful luncheon and receiving novelty tokens for the holiday, the members dispersed for the remainder of the year and will meet again for the first regular program meeting in March of 2013.

Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center Purchases New Computer Software Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center recently purchased Envisionware with PC reservation and session control software. Several libraries in the Westmoreland System have been using the program for some time. The new program allows self-checkout of a designated internet computer. To that end, patrons are now required to have their library cards. To log on, a patron must scan their library card, be assigned a specific computer and then retype their barcode when prompted to begin the one hour session. At the end of the allotted time, the computer will ask if you wish to have an additional 30-minute time period. Patrons are permitted a 60minute internet session each day, as long as they do not have outstanding fines on their accounts. The new software works in conjunction with the circulation desk software to check each patron record. Also, printing has changed. When printing is activated, it will go to the reference desk computer, and the reference librarian will have to release it before printing occurs. At the end of an internet session with printing, a patron is required to stop at the reference desk. The librarian on duty will tell the person the number of pages to be printed and the cost. Printing will then begin.

The Ringgold High School girls’ soccer team hosted a “Pink Out” fundraiser October 3 for Breast Cancer Awareness month. The evening included a Chinese auction, pink cookies, magnets, cotton candy and more. The Lady Rams raised $900 for Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Charles L. and Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center and recently met with hospital staff to present the check. Head Coach Tom Cameron’s wife, Kathy, who is also a breast cancer survivor treated at MVH, spearheaded the committee that organized the fundraiser.

Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates Plan Christmas Party; Get Ready for “Wreaths Across America” With 34 members in attendance at the James C. Ford American Legion Home in Carroll Twp., the November meeting of the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates was opened. Publicity chairperson Francis Dutch reported that he has extended a thank-you note to Teri Sichi of the Valley Independent for her cooperation in getting the meeting write-ups in the paper. The Messengers write-ups are being submitted by George Essey, who has extended his sincere thanks to their staff. The Christmas party this year is scheduled for Tuesday, December 18, at the James C. Ford American Legion Home. Social hour will begin at 5 p.m. with food at 6 p.m. In lieu of live entertainment this year, a 60” screen will be available for viewing the film "Celebrate America," after which door prizes will be held. Joe Gallo will be sending out the postcards and they must be returned to Jim Caserta by December 10th. There is no cost for a member and one guest. Any additional guests will be assessed a fee of $15. The first Saturday in June of 2013 is the tentative date for manning the doors at the Belle Vernon Wal-Mart. Letters have been sent to the survivors of our deceased members, requesting the return of the uniforms that were furnished to them by the organization. To date, there has been no response from any of them. During the flag committee report, it was announced that over 1,000 students have been instructed in the proper way to respect our national flag and there are 29 more schools on the schedule up to February of 2013. Again, help is needed, so if you are available, please contact Marshall. When we first announced the Wreaths across America Program, it was mentioned that individual donations can be made to purchase these wreaths. A shipmate approached 84 Lumber and made mention of the individual donations. 84 Lumber was impressed by our donation to the program that they responded by sending a check made payable to the "Wreaths Across America Organization." We extend a very sincere thank you to the 84 Lumber Company. Additional nominations for the officers for calendar years 2013-14 was open by Cdr. Hess. No further nominations were received. Elected for the calendar years of 2013 and 2014 are CO - William Hess: XO - Barry Anders: Yeoman - James Caldwell: FO - Joseph Acton: Sgt-At-Arms - Carl Pro: Chaplain - Rev. Fred Pfeil. They will assume their respective offices at the first meeting in 2013. The dismissal prayer was given by Chaplain Marshall Lignian and the meeting was adjourned until the next regular meeting on December 4, 2012.

Santa Trolley Event at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum Santa trades in his sleigh for an antique streetcar to kick off Santa Trolley at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum weekends in December. During Santa Trolley, children take a trolley ride with Santa and make sure that he has their Christmas list, while parents and grandparents enjoy caroling and the scenic view from a beautifully restored vintage streetcar. Santa Trolley dates are December 1-2, 8-9, and 15-16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (last trolley with Santa leaves at 4 p.m.). After taking a ride with Santa, check out the large Lionel toy train layout featuring O scale trains and trolleys in the Visitors’ Center and ride the Yuletide Shuttle for more holiday fun! Trolleys and Toy Trains occurs during Santa Trolley as well on Fridays, December 7 and 14 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Come ride our festive trolleys that are decorated for the season, then come and experience our beautiful multi-leveled Lionel toy train layout featuring many running trains and trolleys in our Visitor Education Center. Rostraver Township Historical Society Hosts Guest Speaker on War of 1812 Rostraver Township Historical Society's monthly meeting was held on November 13, 2012 at the historic Old Fells Methodist Church, 800 Fellsburg Road, Belle Vernon. There were 23 local members present. Popp led the Pledge of Allegiance. Robert Cook gave the invocation. Benjamin Lighthall read the minutes of the October meeting and the Board meeting. Will Maurer read the treasurer’s report. Elaine Phillips and Amy Arrigo furnished the cookies and beverages on a Thanksgivingthemed table. The communication items were presented and discussed. The old and new business were discussed and acted upon. Dr. Regis Serinko presented a program titled ‘Why and How the United States Became Involved in the War of 1812-1814.’ The men of General Markel's regiment from the Rostraver and West Newton areas traveled by boat down the Yough River to Pittsburgh, down the Ohio River to Cincinnati and then up to Detroit. General Markel's regiment received 4 causalities and several wounded. The leading commander praised General Markel for his leadership and the conduct uniforms of his troops. The December meeting will be a Christmas dinner meeting at Hoss' Steak and Seafood Restaurant in Rostraver Twp. with the past 8 month's speakers as guests.

Monongahela Christmas Light Up Night a Glittering Success By Miranda Startare

Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce held its annual “Santa Claus Is Shopping In Town” Christmas Light-Up Celebration on Friday, November 16. Many local businesses hosted open houses, offering treats and discounts to the large crowd of people in attendance. Madonna Catholic Regional School entertained children with crafts, snacks, and hot chocolate, as well. The event was sponsored by many local businessStudents from The Dance Co. by Lori es, including the Union-Finley Messenin New Eagle perform at Chess Park. ger and the Mon-Valley Messenger. Luminaries lined the streets, with music playing from bands and DJs. A parade led by the Ringgold High School Marching Band and The Dance Co. by Lori led the Lion’s Club and Santa to his house at First Federal Savings Bank. Crowds were entertained by dancers from The Dance Co. by Lori throughout town and by dancers from Miss Barbara’s School of Dance. Ringgold’s Raz Ma Taz Choir sang carols throughout the city, as well. The chilly evening was a great success and a fun beginning to the Christmas season. Two-Bell Ceremony Held to Commemorate USS Monongahela Anchor By Miranda Startare

The city of Monongahela held a two-bell ceremony on Saturday, November 17 to commemorate the erecting of a plaque near an anchor that was given to the city by the US Navy in July 1982. Members of the Mon Valley Shipmates, the American Legion and VFW Honor Guard, fire department and city officials, and Senator Tim Solobay were in attendance. The anchor originally belonged to the USS Monongahela, which Honor Guard member Jack Fawcett and Senator was initially commissioned during Tim Solobay stand by the anchor, which was dedicated to Monongahela in July 1982 the Civil War. After the ship was by the U.S. Navy. destroyed by fire, the second USS Monongahela was used in World War II and the Korean War. The anchor was later given to the city as a gift and has stood in front of the Monongahela Fire Department ever since.

California United Methodist Church Hosts Free Community Quilt Show Ninety-five year old Anna "Peg" Turner poses next to one of her two stained glass window quilts. California United Methodist Church hosted an open to the public free Community Quilt Show on November 5, 2012 from 1-4 p.m. The well-attended show featured vintage and newer handmade quilts displayed in the beautiful old church that dates to 1859. Quilters Sheila Chambers, Emmilou Roadman Stewart, Myrtle Belle, Delores Platter, and many others put in many long hours to be ready. In addition to quilts, guests were treated to a array of refreshments served on vintage dishes. Hand-crocheted and sewn items for purchase, a Chinese Auction of lovely baskets, and a quilt raffle completed the day.

Monongahela Area Library Receives Donation for Large-Print Books The Monongahela Area Library is currently receiving four large-print books each month thanks to a donation from the Monongahela – Donora Lions Club. The gift was in keeping with the Lions’ commitment to vision issues. Library director Elina Filander stated, “Between the start of 2011 and the same time this past spring, our largeprint book circulation had almost doubled.” The donation will allow the library to add nearly 40 books to the large-print titles already in the library. The additions to the collection include popular current release titles, westerns and biographies. We very much appreciate this gift,” Filander noted. “Many people don’t realize that large-print books are much more expensive than other books. The Lions really are filling a need with this donation.”

The Veteran’s Day parade in Monongahela was spectacular – like the parades I remember from when I was a kid. Communities from throughout the Mon Valley and beyond were represented in one way or another. Big bands, firetrucks, marching groups of veteran’s organizations, biker groups, local politicians rolling by in shiny vehicles, and even peddlers selling balloons to parade watchers added to the festivities. The sidewalks were crowded with onlookers, and parking was at a premium. Monongahela Mayor Bob Kepics and the city council should be should be proud to have had Monongahela play host to this tribute to our veterans.

Locally Raised Filmmaker Seeking Funds for a Mon Valley Documentary Ron Turowski and Veronica Halpin, of Cool Attitude Films, are making a documentary called Renaissance IV: Mon Valley Moving Mountains. The film is about the Mon Valley and its residents trying to rebuild their communities. The documentary charts the heartbreak and hopes of the residents trying to revitalize their neighborhoods during these economically distressing times. With the closing of mills, factories, small businesses, and hospitals, will these boroughs continue to exist or are they going to become extinct? Follow the fight of the leaders and the hardships of the people to see if these forsaken towns can be brought back to life. Support us by letting their voices be heard through exposing the travesty of neglect that they have endured. Ron Turowski, the film’s director of photography, was born and raised in Pittsburgh and has watched the city transform. Turowski explains the film's vision, "For the documentary, we have been shooting many of the changes that have taken place in the Mon Valley over the course of the last two years. Making this film was an eye opener for us after we started to delve deeper into the struggles the communities’ residents and leaders had been facing for decades." "We feel compelled to get this story told and have funded this project ourselves so far. We have come to a point where we need to raise money to complete it. We started a crowdfunding campaign on the IndieGoGo.com website under ‘Renaissance IV: Mon Valley Moving Mountains,’ where our trailer is available for viewing. Using this new fundraising resource gives filmmakers an opportunity to seek funding through campaigning for sponsorships via the internet. In turn, each backer will receive a great perk based on the contribution level. It is imperative that we finish our film so that the voices of the forsaken towns in the Mon Valley can be publicized. Join us in the final countdown of finishing this documentary by May 2013."

Former Rostraver Resident Donates Bell to Library Mr. Mark Baker, a former resident of Rostraver Township has graciously donated, designed, and constructed the display of the Vanduzen Bell for the Rostraver Public Library. He believes that a library unites a community and the bell will commensurate this vision. The Vanduzen Bell is dedicated in loving memory of Mrs. Mary Price Moodey and Mrs. Katherine E. Snee. Mrs. Mary Price Moodey (1930-2012), mother of Mr. Baker, was a woman of courage, perseverance, and strength. She believed in lifelong learning. Mrs. Moodey had many accomplishments in her life, including an employee of Mon Valley United Health Services, Inc. (SPHS) for over 40 years, but she took the most pride in her role as a loving mother and grandmother. Mrs. Katherine Snee (1908-2000) was a resident of Rostraver Township and an advocate of the Rostraver Public Library. She was a successful businesswoman and Founder of the Snee-Reinhart Charitable Foundation. She also served on the Cornell University Council. Mrs. Snee was a valued friend and mentor of Mrs. Moodey, and their friendship lasted over 50 years. The memory of these extraordinary women will live on in many years to come through the Vanduzen Bell.

Bentleyville Lioness Club Dedicates Toddler Playground

The Bentleyville Lioness Club, along with Bentleyville Mayor Tom Brown, Pastor Sang Choi of the Bentleyville United Methodist Church, and Bentleyville Council members Stan Glowaski, Linda Vrabel, and Roy Larimer, gathered on October 13, 2012 to dedicate the toddler playground the Lionesses purchased to be installed at Richardson Park. Pat Heinz, seated on the slide, spearheaded the project which raised most of the funds through a Basket Bash. Dottie Hill, shown on the right, is current president. A service Club, the Lionesses are alway doing something good in the community and are always looking for like-minded members who would like to join. Greater Monessen Historical Society Hosts Holiday Open House The Greater Monessen Historical Society will hold their annual Holiday Open House celebration on Saturday, December 1, 2012. Light refreshments will be available. Following the Christmas parade, Santa Claus will visit the Monessen Heritage Museum to have his photo taken with each child. Photos will be mailed to the child’s home, along with a special letter from the jolly elf. Membership renewals are now underway as part of the annual fund campaign. Forms have been mailed. GMHS memberships run a calendar year of January through December and cost $15 for an individual, $20 for a family and $50 for a business. Four issues of the “Valley Historian” newsletter are included. The fund campaign is used to provide public programming and continue the work of the society in preserving the local ethnic and industrial heritage of the Greater Monessen area. The Colonel James M. Local People News At 98, Bowling is Still Up Bentleyville Man’s Alley By Alice Harris

When Curtis Prest turned 98 on October 8, 2012 his Senior Bowling League friends at Bentleyville Lanes threw a surprise party in his honor. Curtis stays active bowling on two leagues per week and at times has a 300 game. He still loves being with people, so he is always doing something with or for someone. Looking 20 years younger than his physical age, Curtis attributes his long life to good genetics: his mom lived to one month short of 100 years, his Dad to 104 years, and his Grandpa to 114 years. That he stays active and makes effort to not let things “bother him too much” is another plus.

Bentleyville Borough Mourns the Passing of Council President Joseph Kurilko By Alice Harris

The Bentleyville community was deeply saddened on Tuesday October 16, 2012 when Council President Joe Kurilko unexpectedly passed away at his home. Born in Bobtown on May 23, 1942 and a 1960 graduate of Bentleyville Borough Council President Joseph Kuriko (front center) Mapletown High in the company of his fellow Councilmen as they assumed office on a School, Joe served his cheerful note on January 3, 2012. country in the United States Marine Corps from 1961-65 and was awarded Good Conduct Medal. He worked in the remodeling business for 20 years and also operated a restaurant, but his lifelong passion was law enforcement. On September 10, 1982, Joe earned his Municipal Police Officer Certification from the Regional Police Training Academy in Turtle Creek, PA. In his public service career, Joe served as a police officer in Centerville Borough, chief of police in Beallsville Borough, and as a police officer in Bentleyville, where he eventually rose to the rank of chief of police until he retired in 2007. Joe also served as a Pennsylvania state constable for 25 years and as zoning officer in several municipalities. He was currently serving his second term as president on Bentleyville Borough Council. A kind man who smiled a lot, Joe will be greatly missed by his family and friends and will be remembered for his presence and service in the community.

It was fitting that the ceremony renaming the Monongahela/Forward Twp. Bridge to the General Carl E. Vuono Bridge was conducted on Veterans’ Day in Chess Park in Monongahela – General Vuono’s hometown. The ceremony began with a brief speech by Monongahela Mayor Bob General Vuono addresses the crowd gathered at the Chess Park Gazebo. Kepics. The colors were brought forward by a contingent of the Mon Valley Leathernecks and was followed by a singing of the National Anthem by Kim Van Voorhis. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by George Hutchko Cmdr. Post 949, Carroll Twp. An invocation by Fr. William Terza was followed by a tribute to all veterans led by Marge Hunter of VFW Post General Vuono (left) and local veteran Al Magone 1409 and the Mon Valley unveil the sign that will be placed on the bridge. Shipmates. Comments were made by City Councilman Tom Caudill. The honor of recalling the highpoints of the General’s career fell to State Representative Rick Saccone, who concluded with the introduction of General Carl E. Vuono. General Vuono rose through the ranks of the US Army by exemplary performance of his duties after graduating from West Point. He served three tours of duty in Vietnam and rose rapidly through the ranks and served as Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1987 through 1991. He retired as a four-star general. Even with such a background, the General seemed humbled by the honor to be bestowed recalling his younger years in Monongahela. Present at the ceremony was his wife Pat, his daughter, two sons and other members of his family. His sons were both in full dress uniform - career soldiers in the US Army. Vuono said, “To be so honored and on Veterans Day back in my hometown – It doesn’t get much better than this.” His commentary was followed by the unveiling of the sign announcing the bridge as the General Carl E. Vuono Bridge. The ceremonies in Chess Park were concluded by a rifle salute and the playing of taps honoring all deceased Veterans. Q: What is ptosis? (“toe-sis”) A: Ptosis is when one or both of the eyelids are drooping too low over the pupil, which can cause significant visual impairment, especially in the superior visual field. This is usually caused by a stretching or slipping of an eye muscle from its insertion point. Fortunately, this can usually be repaired very simply with either an external levator advancement or an internal mullerectomy. These outpatient operations take less than 30 minutes and have a very simple recovery period.

Q: What is dermatochalasis? (“dermato-ka-lasis”) A: Dermatochalsis is when extra skin over the eyelids begins to sag; this can also cause impairment of vision in the superior visual axis. A small resection of this extra skin (oftentimes along with resection of the nasal fat pad and underlying oribicularis muscle) not only corrects this problem very easily but also provides significant cosmetic improvement as well. This procedure is called a bilateral upper lid blepharoplasty.

Q: What are ectropion and entropion? A: Ectropion is a turning out of the lower eyelid so that it is not touching the globe of the eye as is functionally required. When this occurs, patients often experience tearing and irritation. Entropion is a turning in of the eyelid margin, which often causes the eyelashes to brush against the cornea. The cornea is exquisitely sensitive, and this can cause significant tearing and pain along with corneal scarring and eventual permanent loss of vision. Both of these maladies can be fixed through a series of small concurrent procedures that more appropriately reposition the eyelid margin against the globe. These procedures take anywhere from 20-40 minutes and result in little post-operative pain or discomfort.

Q: What is a lower lid blepharoplasty? A: A bilateral lower lid blepharoplasty is a surgery to correct excessive skin drooping and fat prolapse under the eyes. It is usually cosmetic in nature rather than for correction of a functional problem that would be covered by insurance. Excess skin and infraorbital fat are carefully excised to improve the contour and look of the face. Patients are usually pleased with the very natural and non-artificial improvement in their appearance.

Q: Where are these procedures done and what is the recovery time? Foreclosure vs. Short Sale

hat happens when a homeowner finds themselves in financial distress? Loss of a job, divorce, or any number of life events can create a situation where the home owner can no longer afford their home. The question becomes is it better to sit around waiting for the inevitable foreclosure, hoping that the situation will improve or to take action and sell the property via a short sale? We believe the short sale is a better decision. These are the key points to consider: A homeowner who loses a home to foreclosure is ineligible for a Fannie Mae backed mortgage for 5 years. A homeowner that successfully negotiates a closes a short sale will be eligible for a Fannie Mae

backed mortgage in 2 years. On any future mortage application, a foreclosure or deed in lieu during the last 7 years will effect the borrower’s future interest rates. With a short sale, there is currently no similar question regarding short sales on the loan application. With a foreclosure, an overall credit score may be lowered anywhere from 250 to 300 points over at least a 3 year period. In a short sale situation, the credit reports will indicate late or no payments or say “paid as negotiated” or “paid as agreed”. These will only lower a credit score as little as 50 points and show up only as brief as 12 to 18 months. A foreclosure will appear on public records for 7 years. There is no classification on credit reports for short sales. A foreclosure can interfere with both current and future employment opportunites for any position that requires a security clearance. On its own, a short sale does not challenge most security clearances. Current and future employers have the right and actively check credit history of their employees regularly which can result in not getting hired at all or the immediate loss of employment. Since short sales are not reported on credit reports, they are not usually a challenge to secruing employment or staying employed. After foreclosure, the lenders have a right to pur-

sue a deficiency judgement for their losses. In some successful short sales, it is possible to convince the lender to give up the right to pursue a defiency judgement against the homeonwer. During foreclosure, the home will have to go through an REO process if it does not sell at auction. In most cases this will result in a lower sales price and tonget time to sell in a declining market. That equals a higher amount of defiency judgement. If a short sale, the home is sold at a price that should be as close to market value and, in almost all cases, will be better that an REO sale resulting in a lower deficency. As you can see, most of the time the homeowner is better off with the short sale! However, negotiating the short sale is not something the homeowner should attempt to do alone. There are many ways you can use that extra time inside. For example, you may want to spend a few minutes checking your earnings history and getting an estimate of your future Social Security benefits at www.socialsecurity.gov/mystatement, where you can access your online Social Security Statement. If you’re planning to apply for Social Security retirement benefits, you can do that without going outside or visiting an office. Instead, brew yourself a cup of coffee or tea and sit down at your computer from the comfort of your home to apply online. Chances are your hot beverage will last longer than the time it takes to apply online for retirement benefits. Our website makes the retirement application process quick, easy, and secure. In most cases, once your application is submitted electronically, you’re done. There are no forms to sign and usually no documentation is required. They were classy and sassy in this 26th annual musical production of the Mon Valley variety show “Showboat” presented on Friday and Saturday, October 19 and 20 at the newly renovated Charleroi High School Auditorium. The show theme was “Back in the Saddle Again” (distinctly Hanging the backdrop for the dress rehearsal of country/western), featuring a cast of the Mon Valley variety show “Showboat.” performers ranging in age from 14 to 96. There were 20 vocal solos, several instrumental solos, and line dancing performances. The full chorus and a quartet also sang. “Showboat” is a variety show created, directed, and performed by senior citizen volunteers (Zack excluded) located in and around the Mon Valley. The Deborah Ritts and Sis Gray home base for the production group is rehearse a number, “Down on the Farm.” the Monongahela Senior Citizens Center. Proceeds from the show benefit the Meals-On-Wheels program that brings meals to about 450 area shut-ins daily in the Mon Valley area as part of the Diversified Human Services Inc. activities operating under Southwestern Pennsylvania Human Service. Zack Mendola, 14 and a young virtuoso, admitted that he was having fun. Mendola’s talents range from musician to singer, to dancer and actor. In addition to a great classical piano solo, he provided piano accompaniment to the remaining cast of performers, who were in an age bracket to be his grandparents or perhaps great-grandparents. John Baumgarten, age 96, has written and published 10 romantic love songs and is still singing and writing. In between these two performers were 32 other talented singers, dancers and actors. Catholic Women’s College Club Gives Thanks During November Meeting A mass of remembrance for the deceased members of the Catholic Women’s College Club was celebrated by Fr. Michael Crookston in the Epiphany Chapel in Monessen on November 5 at 6 p.m. Thanksgiving hymns were sung and special prayers were recited to remember loved ones of the women of the club. Following the mass, Dorothy Jozwiak, committee member and parishioner of the Epiphany Church, introduced the pastor, Fr. Crookston. She also inspired the members with the history of the chapel. Wiles thanked the ladies for their very generous donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Monessen. Food vouchers will be given to families in need for the Thanksgiving holiday. Susan Tegi, chairwoman for the December meeting, announced that the Christmas dinner will be held on December 3 at 5:45 p.m. at the Willow Room in Rostraver. Members were encouraged to give monetary donations through their churches for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Wiles read a prayer for the national elections. The gift of the month was won by Martha Ghilani. The meeting concluded with members singing “God Bless America.”

Mobile Patient Monitoring: Another Progressive Service at Monongahela Valley Hospital People who receive medical care in the Progressive Care Unit at Monongahela Valley Hospital may be wearing more than a hospital gown. MVH recently updated the telepaks, now attaching a light-weight portable monitor to patients in order to continuously monitor the electrical activity in their hearts (ECG) and oxygen saturation in the blood (SpO2,). The device also enables the medical staff to monitor other vital signs in real time when patients are on the move. When patients wear the small monitors, nurses, physicians and other clinical staff can check a patient’s clinical status with a push of the button right in the patient’s room or at the bedside. All of the information is presented on a color touch-screen display.

Hundreds of visitors were on hand November 19 as the hospital held its 28th Annual Light-Up Night at the hospital’s Central Plaza. The Annual Light-Up Night has become a tradition of Monongahela Valley Hospital, and draws capacity crowds. The switch to turn on the display was built by the MVH maintenance employees. The hospital said the switch “may be the largest and most whimsical light switch north of Florida’s Disney World.”

Ringgold School Board Directors Speak Out at Chamber Event By Paul Chasko

Dateline: November 14, 2012 Mon Area Chamber of Commerce President Anthony Bottino thought that getting members of the Ringgold School Board out into a social setting to discuss the future of education at Ringgold might put the new school construction/old school renovation issue in the background, and it worked–almost. Attending a dinner at the Ripepi Winery just outside of Monongahela were Ringgold School Superintendent Karen Polkabla, Board President Chuck Smith, and board members Bob Smith, Larry Mauro, Maureen Ott, Chris Carroll, and Marianne Bulko. Not in attendance were board members Gene Kennedy, Carol Flament, and Bill Stein. Also present were members of the chamber and other guests, bringing the attendance to about 40. The event served to indicate that all the Ringgold School Board Directors and the administration want: the best possible education for Ringgold students, improved scores in the Pennsylvania School Testing Program, a much higher ranking than roughly 340 in the ranking list of the state’s 500 school districts, and to have graduating seniors well prepared for life after high school. Board President Chuck Smith attended a gathering hosted by the Mon Area Chamber of Commerce to discuss the future of Ringgold School District.

Smith and Directors Mauro and Robert Smith) remain firmly convinced that school buildings belong in the communities they serve, not at a centrally located campus. That being the case, the board will remain divided on whether to build a new middle school building near the high school to accommodate all middle school students, or to spend a nearly equal amount of tax dollars to renovate the old elementary school buildings in Donora and Monongahela, split the middle school class between the two buildings, and incur increased operating costs (an estimated $400,000 annually) even though the two old buildings are now closed by a motion that carried last month.

Students, teachers, and aids at the Ringgold Elementary School North (RESN) worked hard for two weeks to put together a program honoring local veterans from all five branches of the armed forces on Friday, November 9. After having lunch in the “hospitality area” in the auditorium, the entire RESN student body (650 plus) joined them. Mon A flag-waving cheer greets veterans Valley Shipmates escorted as they enter the auditorium honorees to their seats. Students from every grade performed and waved small American flags. After a ceremonial folding of the flag, the veterans enjoyed a video presentation highlighting achievements of the various branches of the armed forces. The program closed with a moment of silence for the fallen members of the armed forces, the playing of Taps by veteran Lee Hemmings, and the singing of God Bless America by everyone in the auditorium – a great afternoon for the veterans and students alike. SPORTS Ringgold Girls Cross Country Hard Work Pays Off as Team and Individuals Move Up

A quick look back at Girl’s Cross Country at Ringgold shows some potential for upward movement over the next few years. One of Ringgold’s team captains, Kirsten McMichael (sophomore), is poised to lead her team sevIt runs in the family–Ringgold Athletic Director and former eral rungs up the ladder, as Cross Country runner and coach Ron McMichael with she and other youngsters Kirsten and Jennifer. on the team improve consistently. Right behind her are sophomore Angelica Brennfleck and Janika Hutton (freshman). Graduation in 2013 will see the loss of Samantha Middlemiss and Jamie Klebanski but left behind will be a core of hard-working runners. The team finished in 23rd place in the WPIAL Class AAA meets, but the program under Coach Jennifer McMichael is becoming steadily stronger, due in no small part to her aforementioned daughter, Kirsten. As Kirsten’s mom, coach, and trainer, Jennifer McMichael helps her considerably and the work is paying off. At the Ringgold Invitational on October 11 at their home track Kirsten posted a time of 19:41, Kirsten McMichael took breaking her mom’s record of 19:59 and coming in 4th place in a field of 203 4th place in a field of 203 runners on the Mingo at the Mingo Invitational. Park course. She also ran well in the Washington County Coaches meet four days later and became the Washington County Varsity Cross Country Girls Champion, placing first with a time of 19:48. Prior to both of those meets, she was the Big South Conference Champion with a first place finish time of 19:59 on the Mingo Park course. This season, Kirsten medaled at the California University Invitational, the Red White and Blue Invitational, and the Slippery Rock Invitational. She came in first at every section meet this season except for one where she took second. Kirsten to date has set four cross country course records (Ringgold, Thomas Jefferson, Connellsville, and West Mifflin). Both the Ringgold Boys and Girls cross country teams went six wins/two losses in the section this season. The girls’ team was the Big South Conference Champion September 27. Both teams are gaining depth and the program is growing stronger. Successes of the boys and girls teams feed each other–it’s a tight program mostly comprised of underclassmen with only four seniors. Look for good things to come in Ringgold Cross Country over the next several years.

On Saturday, November 3, the Ringgold Rams Club hosted its Hall of Fame Banquet and inducted nine new members as the Ringgold Rams Club Hall of Fame Class of 2012 – the fifth class inducted since 2006. It never fails to amaze me that so many outstanding individuals have come through the Monongahela/ Donora, and later the Ringgold School District educational program, and the 2012 inductees only add to that pride. Ringgold Rams Club President Carl Crowley kicked off the evening’s ceremonies by introducing the Master of Ceremonies for the evening, Attorney Mike Lucas. Lucas announced that certificates of achievement were being awarded to 17 Ringgold students for outstanding performance in the arts, academics, and athletics. Ringgold Press Box Renamed in Honor of Bill Ellis By Paul Chasko

It’s an honor fitting to him to rename the Ringgold High School Stadium press box in honor of the late Bill Ellis, who was a true friend of Ringgold sports and the Ringgold School District. I didn’t know Bill well, but I know those who did. I first made his acquaintance as I was covering an All-Star High School football event; Bill was the organizer and he Ringgold School Board President Chuck Smith saw to it that I had access to the playhands Mrs. Bill Ellis a replica of the sign that will ers and anything else I needed. Ellis was always involved in one capacity or another—serving as scorekeeper at varsity wrestling matches and commentator at varsity football games. Later on, we saw each other at Ringgold School Board meetings, as Ellis was a member of the board and I was covering the meetings. The last time we spoke was when he showed me a flyer he had handed out when running for the school board. The flyer indicated his promise to help reopen the elementary school buildings in Monongahela and Donora if he was elected. It was an odd moment. Bill knew I was not in favor of renovating the old buildings, and I think he wanted me to know why he was – a man who kept his promises. I had the distinct impression at that moment that he hated the controversy this issue had caused within the board and the school district. It may be a greater honor to Ellis to resolve this issue and move the school district forward in the way that is best for the kids – whatever direction that might take us.

PA Sports Hall of Fame Inducts Two Mon Valley Natives There was a distinct Mon Valley flavor to the 50th annual induction ceremonies and banquet of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame held recently at the Four Points by Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel in Warrendale. Among the inductees were Dale Hamer (left) and Dr. Sam Havrilak (right), a native of Monessen. Among those congratulating them at the event is Stephen V. Russell (center), general chairman of the Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame. Hamer, a Fairhope native and Bellmar High School graduate, has been a National Football League official for 35 years and is in his 11th season as an instant replay official. Havrilak graduated from Monessen High School in 1965 and starred at Bucknell University before being drafted by the NFL’s Baltimore Colts. He played professionally as a running back, quarterback, receiver, defensive end and on special teams with the Colts and New Orleans Saints during a career that ran from 1969-1974. He was a member of the Colts’ Super Bowl V championship team. Hamer and Havrilak are both members of the Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame.
