DIGITAL DO-OVER Chamber's Annual "Easy to be Green" Event Successful The Mon Valley Regional Chamber’s “Easy to be Green” day held on August 15 was a busy and productive day. The largest amount of e-waste ever collected Workers from General Industries and Goodwill unload unwanted electronics for recycling. by the Chamber was calculated to be 9,400 pounds. Goodwill of Southwestern PA, a leader in the nationwide effort to deal with the fast-growing problem called “e-waste,” will refurbish and recycle the donated computers. Through the Chamber’s “Easy to be Green” event, two truckloads of recyclable goods were collected and kept out of landfills!

Also collected throughout the day was used clothing for Goodwill, eyeglasses for Lion’s International, and books for the J.K. Tener Library. The Chamber also has Abitibi Paper Retrieval bins, which are available for recyclable paper collection every day.

2012 Mingo Creek County Park Fall Hayrides The Washington County Department of Parks & Recreation will be offering group hayrides this fall in Mingo Creek County Park. Dates for the 2012 Mingo Creek County Park Hayrides are Friday, October 12; Saturday, October 13; Friday, October 19; Saturday, October 20; Friday, October 26; and Saturday, October 27. The Friday evening hayrides scheduled for October 12, 19 and 26 are available from 5-8 p.m.

Hayrides scheduled on Saturday, October 13 are available from 6-8 p.m. Hayrides scheduled for Saturday, October 20 and Saturday, October 27 are available from 1-8 p.m.

Hayrides are approximately 50 minutes in length. The haywagon can accommodate approximately 25 people per hour. The use of a picnic shelter and a fire circle for two hours before or after the scheduled hayride is also provided. The cost is $50 per hayride. Hayrides book quickly.

Eighty-Four Pirates Fan Speaks Against “Retaliation� in Sports Dear Editor, Around town these days, “retaliation� is the dominant theme of sports talk shows. Conversation was initiated by the recent “beaming� of Andrew McCutchen during a Pirates/Reds baseball game. Almost without exception, announcers agree that the Pirate pitchers would have to intentionally hit a Cincinnati batter and that not hitting a Cincinnati batter would end the Pirates’ chances at a run for the championship playoffs. In other words, the Pirates cannot be champions unless they throw at opposing batters. This is especially true when the opposing pitchers are intentionally throwing at us.

These announcers and their call-in fans have passed judgment and prescribed punishment on an incident that they admit is not provable. Batters get hit in almost every game, and no one but the pitchers know if hitting batsman was an intentional act.

Not only is the throwing at batters against the rules of baseball, it is possibly criminal and potentially tragic. A fastball to the head could seriously injure a batter and that’s what’s wrong with today’s sports. There are no “sportsmen!� It’s win at all costs!

In basketball, Lebron James gets pushed, tripped, elbowed and almost “mugged� in every game. And he does nothing but win. He does not retaliate, and we don't like it. He is too good to be true. If he would retaliate, we could accept him. He would be more like us and the sport-talk announcers and their fans.

I hope that the Pirates do not retaliate and just keep on winning. It will show that at least we have sportsmen on the field, if not on the radio.

Bentleyville Public Library Raffles Steelers Basket; Prepares for Jewelry Sale

Spaghetti Dinner Planned to Raise Money for Charleroi Fire Victims

The Bentleyville Public Library will be closed Monday, September 3rd in observance of Labor Day. The Bentleyville Public Library Book Club will meet at the library on Thursday, September 20 at 6 p.m. The book to be discussed will be Annie Freeman's Fabulous Traveling Funeral. To request a book held for the discussion or for more information contact the library at 724-239-5122.

Friends of the Bentleyville Public Library will meet at the library on Monday, September 24 at 6:30 p.m. Discussion will be concerning upcoming fundraisers.

New members are welcome to join. The Bentleyville Public Library Board and Friends are selling raffle tickets for a Steelers Basket containing a Ben Rothlesberger game jersey, $25 gift card compliments of the Tradesmen Inn, two large pizzas compliments of Three Guyz Pizza, assorted drinks, Steelers items and snack mixes all in a Steelers beverage tub. Tickets may be purchased at the library for a $1 donation. The ticket will play on the evening drawing of the lottery September 21.

Friends of the Bentleyville Public Library are collecting costume jewelry for their sale in November. Any item may be donated at the library. On Tuesday August 21, Charleroi residents Kristin and Delbert Bergman along with their 6-year-old son, Seth, awoke to a horrific fire that had taken over their entire house. Luckily, all 3 of them escaped the fire unharmed, but within seven minutes it had taken over every single possession that they owned.

The Bergmans have received an unbelievable amount of love and support from the community of clothing and household donations. It is going to be a long road of building their life back up from the ground, but they are so very thankful for the outpouring of love that they have received following this tragedy.

Donations are still greatly appreciated and can deposited into a savings account at Charleroi Federal Savings Bank (either the Charleroi or Washington location) or mailed directly to Kristin and Delbert Bergman c/o 525 Lincoln Ave. Charleroi, PA 15022. Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce Halloween Parade The Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce and Attorney Michelle Watson along with local businesses will sponsor the annual Halloween Parade on Wednesday, October 24. The Ringgold High School Marching Ram Band will be featured. Greater Monessen Historical Society Recreates Civil War; Slates Bus Tour The Greater Monessen Historical Society will continue its salute to Monessen founder and Civil War hero, Colonel James M. Schoonmaker, by hosting the “Civil War Experience,” a buffet dinner event, on Saturday, September 22. The event will be held at the Monessen Firemen’s Eastgate Social Hall from 5 to 9 p.m.

It will consist of a dinner catered by Two Fine Caterers featuring foods popular in the north and south during the war years. The menu will have hors d’oeuvres, fresh tomato bisque, tossed salad, northern chicken fricassee, southern fried steak, a summer squash medley, sweet potatoes in a maple sauce, corn bread, Abe and Mary Lincoln’s gingerbread with fresh apples and Jefferson Davis’ Confederate reception punch. Cocktails will be available. Live entertainment will be provided by the Acoustic Shadows of the Blue and Gray. A special presentation will be given by the Redstone Living Historians. On Saturday, September 29, the Historical Society will sponsor a bus tour of the Monessen Orthodox and Byzantine churches. The event will focus on the fine arts and culture of each church. Icons and stained glass will be interpreted as works of art. Donora Historical Society Welcomes Author; Schedules Walking Tour Thank you to all who stopped by our booth at the Whiskey Rebellion Festival on Saturday, July 28 in Washington, PA. We spoke to numerous festival goers about the society and our activities.

Another thanks to all those who stopped by the museum during the Donora Fireman’s Street Fair on Saturday, August 4. The museum was busy all day with class reunion groups and fair goers.

The museum welcomed Miss Betsy Chou, who visited us from Shanghai, China.

Miss Chou was the student from Concordia University in Shanghai who was doing research on the 1948 Smog and created a website as her class project.

Our next historical presentation will be held on Monday, September 10 and feature author Kathleen Shoop, who will discuss her book titled After the Fog, which is a novel of historical fiction based on the factual events of the 1948 Smog disaster that occurred in Donora as told through a fictional family of characters.

Save the Date: Our 2nd Annual Cement City Walking Tour will take place on Sunday, October 14. The tour will start at the museum at 1 p.m. with a slide presentation on Donora’s National Historic District – Thomas Edison’s Cement City, as well as showing artifacts and original blueprints during the construction from 1916 and 1917. A walking tour will follow in the Historic District to point out some of the various architectural details. Light refreshments will be served. The presentation and walking tour are free but donations are gladly accepted. Please contact the museum if you would like more information or would like to RSVP. Monongahela’s Police Conduct K-9 Training in Vacant School

Police engage in firearm target practice, firemen practice extinguishing old cars and empty buildings, paramedics conduct disaster preparedness drills, and so it seems Monongahela’s K-9 dog Beny clamps down on logical that K-9 units (an officer and Pittsburgh Police Officer Dan Tice (in a protective dog) need to practice their team “bite suit”) until Monongahela’s Officer Larry Maraldo re-attaches the leash and tells skills also.

That’s just what happened on August 9, 2012 at the vacant Monongahela Elementary Center, by special permission of the Ringgold School District and the City of Monongahela.

The Monongahela K-9 program was initiated during the current term of Mayor Bob Kepics. The acquisition and maintenance of K-9 dog Beny for the Monongahela Police Dept. has come strictly from contributions—no taxpayer funds have been used.

Officer Larry Maraldo and Beny hosted the activity, joined by six other K-9 teams from Baldwin, Whitehall, Wilkinsburg, and the City of Pittsburgh.

Maraldo explained that K-9 dogs are taught specialty skills to detect drugs, persons, guns, or explosives. Most dogs have a dual-purpose ability. Sargeant Chris Micknowski of the Pittsburgh Police emphasized that a good police dog has a good nose—that is the most essential trait.

The main school building was used as a hiding area for the detection of intruders—Dan Tice of the Pittsburgh Police served as the “decoy”, dressed in a very thickly padded “bite suit.” Taking solo turns, each of the dogs was released from its leash to locate and apprehend Tice by sniffing him out and clamping their mouths on his sleeve; they do NOT let go until their handler instructs them to do so. The school’s annex building was used to stash narcotics for each of the dogs to find.

Monongahela Area Library Hosts Cooking Demo The Monongahela Area Library Friends of the Library invite all those interested in healthy eating with little cooking involved are invited to a cooking demonstration and tasting by culinary instructor and caterer Christine Somales at the library.

The chef will prepare three fresh salads and an easy salsa using vegetables from the Farmers’ Market. She will also discuss the punch that herbs can give your cooking. Community Foundation Kicks Off Annual Steelers Ticket Raffle Washington County Community Foundation is raffling four Steelers tickets and limousine service to and from Heinz Field for the November 18, 2012 game against the Baltimore Ravens. The August Meeting of the Monessen Public Library Board of Trustees The Monessen Public Library Board of Trustees recently held its August meeting.

Lucille D'Alfonso, city council liaison, gave Director Dave Zilka a list of grants and foundations which are involved with libraries. Zilka stated he met with Susan Acito from the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, who also provided him with funding and grant information. With state funding at a minimum, Board members agreed that these lists and aggressive fundraising campaigns must be pursued to maintain and expand services at the library.

Board member Marc Bellora reported on the Joe Gladys fundraiser to be held Saturday, October 20. There will be a tiered level of sponsorships with free tickets to the gala as well as the meet and greet to coincide with the sponsorships.

Individual tickets may be purchased for $50. Bellora noted that sports memorabilia from all over the country will be part of the silent auction.

With increased activity at the library, Board members discussed ways to increase volunteerism. Susanna Swade, treasurer, stated increased membership in the Friends of Monessen Public Library might help. President Madeline Dudas suggested constructing a list of duties that need to be done and then making it available to the public. Zilka stated he would like to hire a high school student as an intern.

Zilka announced that the Mon Valley Art Club will be holding their annual exhibition at the library with the opening on September 23. Zilka attended and spoke on behalf of the library at a meeting held by the Westmoreland County Commissioners at the Rostraver Municipal Complex. The meeting was held to allow for public input on the disbursement of Act 13 funds in Westmoreland County (Marcellus Shale Tax Monies).

Jill Godlewski, Children's Librarian, told the board there was a lot of energy for the Elvis event held August 5. The successful event was multi-generational with many patrons sporting Elvis t-shirts and attire. Godlewski brought many exciting ideas to the board for teen events as well as suggestions on fundraising. One of her ideas for fundraising would be to host a Gold Exchange Tea on Sunday, November 18. Anyone attending could bring in unwanted gold or silver in exchange for a favorable rate. This date seemed especially appealing to the board since it is the Sunday before the "Black Friday" shopping day.

Reports from employees Allysa Gigliotti and Daniel Zyglowicz showed that book processing, memorials, and cataloging were all up to date.

Monessen Library’s Summer Reading Program a Big Hit The final program for this year’s summer reading program was held Sunday, August 5. In keeping with this year’s theme , “Dream Big: Read, ” Elvis, as recreated by Jamie Harris, entertained a multi-generational crowd of dreamers.

New Eagle’s Centennial Celebration a Smashing Success

The Borough of New Eagle held a centennial celebration August 10 - 12, 2012. The celebration included the Washington County Firemen’s Convention Parade on Friday with festivities on Saturday including the opening of the time capsule and awards given to the oldest female resident and the oldest male resident from New Eagle. The John. K. Tener Library, located on Fallowfield Ave. and serving the Charleroi Area School District and surrounding municipalities, is raising its voice to let the community know it is in trouble. “For years, we had endowments to fund us so we didn’t go to the municipalities,” said Dr. Linda V. Stennet of the Tener Library. “But now the endowments have gotten so low that with what we have left we would only be able to remain open for 2 – 3 years.”

In June, the Library sent out letters to six municipalities – Charleroi, Dunlevy, North Charleroi, Speers, Stockdale and Twilight – asking for approximately $5/person per census population for each municipality on a yearly basis.

The Library is asking that each area incorporate this amount into their yearly budget. “You can’t run a community without a Library,” Dr. Stennet stated.

According to the state, local funding should represent 50% of the Library’s funding. Right now, Tener library is operating with only 3% local funding. The Library gets some grant money, but this goes toward programs and can go toward nothing else, like operating costs.

Indeed, the Tener Library offers many programs, including Children’s Booktime, Grandparents’ Day, and Family History Day, all coming up in the fall. There is an adult book club, resumé and job search help, and free 101 computer The Library has made its appeal and provided the municipalities with a proposal. Now they will follow up on that and wait. “Many of the communities have new money coming in from the casinos and from Marcelus Shale. We would like to see some of that new money budgeted toward the local Library,” said Stennet. So far, Dunlevy made a gift of $250 and Stockdale made a gift of $500. Other businesses that help fund the Libray are Lee Supply, Guttman’s, Highway Appliance, Shamrock Chemical, Charleroi Federal, BJ’s diner and Armando’s Pizza.

Fundraisers are another way in which the Library hopes to raise money to sustain the costs it accrues. Fundraisers coming up include Wine Tasting and the Fall Festival. “We need sustainable funding from the communities we serve,” Dr. Stennet stated.

This unique event is known as the largest street sale in Southwestern PA, running along a three-mile stretch in Monongahela and New Eagle.

MARC Town Meeting Scheduled for September 17 MARC (Monongahela Area Revitalization Corporation) will hold its 6th Annual Town Meeting featuring keynote speaker Joseph P. Kirk, who will address and be speaking on the Mon Valley Council's plan for Growth in the Mid-Mon Valley on Monday, September 17, 7 – 9 p.m. at First Niagra Bank, 318 W. Main St., Monongahela. Other participants include Joseph Acton, MARC Member, and Anthony M. Joseph P. Kirk Lombardi, President and CEO Emeritus of Monongahela Valley Hospital.

Since 1987, Kirk has served as executive director of the Monessen-based economic development organization. From 1985-1987 Kirk was an assistant professor and economic development team member at the Mon Valley Renaissance Program of California University of PA. Prior to joining Cal U, Kirk served in numerous capacities at the Appalachian Council of Governments in Greenville, SC including director of special programs. Kirk is a native of Swissvale, PA and holds a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Pittsburgh School of Public and International Affairs. Kirk currently serves as vice chairman of Three Rivers Regatta as well as serving on numerous community boards in Mount Lebanon where he resides with his wife Jennifer Michaux.

Charleroi Area Historical Society Receives Accolades for Historical Building The Charleroi Area Historical Society, Inc. was presented with a plaque and proclaimed for having achieved and obtained being a member of the Washington County History & Landmark Foundation's (WCH&LF) historical site listing in reference to The Goaziou Print Shop located at 807 Fallowfield Ave. in Charleroi. WCH&LF President Michael Roman and his colleague, Sandy Mansmann, were in attendance at the Mike Roman presenting the plaque to Society's regular program meeting to Beth Perret, President of the CAHS, Inc. make the presentation of the well-recognized Foundation's plaque. The plaque will be installed on the front of the building in the near future to showcase its increased significance. The Goaziou Print Shop is a still-intact turn-of-the-century print shop and the Society has worked hard to restore and preserve the building as a viable part of Charleroi's Official National Registered Historic District and its assortment of vital history, including it being the hometown of Governor John K. Tener, 1911-1915.

The shop was founded by a noted Franco-American socialist and instigator of America's original Co-Mason Movement, Louis Goaziou, with the Alpha (first) chartered lodge taking place in the residence above the shop. Regular tours are available on Mondays and Fridays and special tours can be reserved by contacting the Society. Further work on the upper decorative front facade is expected to begin soon.

The Center for Wound Management Moves to Convenient New Location on MVH Campus

Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy units were moved from the hospital to the first floor of the Charles L. and Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion to provide more convenient access to patients and their families.

Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Center for Wound Management, which is designed to treat patients with chronic, non-healing wounds on an outpatient basis, recently became even more convenient to visit. In mid-July, the Center moved from the 4th floor of the hospital to newly designed space on the 1st floor of the Charles L. and Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center.

The new facilities are part of MVH’s $25 million construction project that not only included the new space for the Center for Wound Management, but 4 new state-of-the-art operating suites which opened earlier this year.

The Center for Wound Management offers management of various types of ulcers, skin complications and complex surgical wounds. MVH’s skilled physicians and certified wound management nurses provide advanced wound technology procedures, compression therapy, dressing changes, wound grafting, routine follow-up and care, assessments of nutritional status, social service needs in relation to changes in life patterns and patient/family education. MVH also offers Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), a highly effective treatment option which is designed to help heal wounds that are particularly problematic.

Monessen Public Library’s Annual Gala Scheduled for October 20 Monessen Public Library and Cultural Center will honor former Greyhound coach Joe Gladys at their annual gala on Saturday, October 20 at the Monessen Firemen’s Eastgate Social Hall. Coach Gladys, during his 30 years of service to the school district and community, mentored and taught thousands of athletes and students. Proceeds from the event will benefit ongoing programs at the library and cultural center. Rostraver Twp. Historical Society Schedules Sept. and Oct. Presenters Rostraver Twp. Historical Society held its monthly meeting on August 9 at the Old Fells Methodist Church. There were 26 local members and guest present.

Raymond Popp opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and Robert Cook gave the invocation. Benjamin Lighthall read the minutes of the July meeting. Will Maurer read the financial report.

RTHS completed a contract with Comcast to install a phone line and internet service. The service was completed on August 14, with a new phone number (724823-0351) and e-mail address (rostraverthistoricalsociety@comcast.net). All future business transactions will take place at the new office location. The hours will be from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays for visitors at the Library and Genealogy Research. The Lloyd Thompson historical files are available for examination and research.

Dan Roebuck, from West Newton, Commander of the 105th Regiment PA Co E of the Sewickley Rifles, gave a very interesting presentation on the life of the men during the Civil War. Of the 165 volunteers who enlisted from West Newton area, only 7 were mustered out from Washington, DC in 1865.

John Bursak from Fairmont, WV, Captain of the 1st Virginia Calvary, will give a detailed history of the Army of the South on September 13.

The October 12 meeting will feature Larry Gallant of the Peter’s Creek Historical Society. He will provide two new PowerPoint presentations called Ancient Fortresses of the Ohio and Monongahela River Valley and Columbus from 200,000 B.C. to 1492: A Heretical History of Who Was First. Larry is a local author, historian and explorer. RTHS unlocks the doors to the Restored 1834 Concord School for visitors to view the educational criteria for students from the late 1700s to 1900s. The public is invited to come from 1 until 6 p.m. and the building is located on Municipal Drive on the way to Cedar Creek Park.

RTHS is a collector of aluminum cans to support their many projects.

Daley Commends Cal U and Connect, Inc. for Grant Awards State Rep. Peter J. Daley II, D-Fayette/Washington, commended California University of PA and Connect, Inc. Washington Family Center for securing grants to prevent underage and dangerous alcohol use.

California University of PA will receive a $17,500 grant and Connect, Inc. a $16,008 grant through PA’s Bureau of Alcohol Education. In all, 124 applications were received for the 2012-13 grant cycle and only 66 were funded.

The grants were awarded by the PA Liquor Control Board, which committed more than $1 million to the effort this year.

Monessen Public Library Hosts the Valley Art Club’s 70th Annual Juried Exhibition The Valley Art Club will have their annual juried Exhibition at the Monessen Public Library this year.

This year’s theme is “Out of the Blue” and there is an award given for the best themed painting. Our artists have to get creative for this theme!

The exhibit will run from Monday, September 24 - Thursday, October 4.

The library hours are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The opening reception will be held on Sunday, September 23, from 1 to 4 p.m. The public is invited. There will be music provided by the Laurel Mountain Winds group. Refreshments will be served.

The show will be judged by Todd Pinkham. Mr. Pinkham is an art professor at California University of PA. He has a bachelor of fine arts from Indiana University of PA and a master of fine arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Many of the paintings in the exhibit will be for sale. Each artist’s phone number will be displayed with the paintings.

The club has been providing this annual art show for 70 years. Each year art lovers in the Mon Valley and surrounding areas attend the opening reception and view the artwork of our local artists. In past years, over 200 people have come to our opening reception.

Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates Receive Donated Flags for Flag Program

The August meeting was opened by CO Bill Hess, followed by the playing of the Navy Hymn, the invocation by Chaplain Marshall Lignian, and the Pledge of Allegiance. After the roll call, the minutes of the June meeting were read by Yeoman Jim Caldwell and approved. The treasurer report and a report of the picnic was read by Treasurer Joe Acton and approved. The picnic committee of of Joe Gallo, Bob Mascetta, Will Harris, Larry Masci, Gene Maisano, Fred Kernisky, and Nancy Horvath was thanked for their work in getting the affair rolling.

A thank you letter was read from the Fisher House in Pittsburgh for the $500 donation we made to the House. Lawrence Masci received flyers from the Tin-Can Association asking for Tin-Can Sailors to join their organization, along with another flyer from the Cruiser Association, also asking for new members.

The Local Vets Council reported that plans are progressing for the November 11th parade, however, help is still being requested. See Joe Acton if you are available.

The County Veteran Council report was given by Fred Owens. If you have any needs for service, please contact Gary Grimes of the Washington County Veteran Affairs Office. Westmoreland and Fayette County veterans can contact their county VA offices. All three counties have the phone numbers listed in the respective county seats.

Lynn Wilson reported that the new Navy hats have been received.

Henry Venanzi requested to be relieved as chairman of the parade committee due to health reasons.

Marshall Lignian gave the Flag Committee report. In presenting the flag program, we have a 3" x 5" 13 star and 13 stripe flag to show to the attendees, which is quite small. Marshall visited the Flag Factory in Castle Shannon and explained the situation. The Flag Factory donated two types of 13 star and stripe flags to thank the committee for the work that they are doing.

Marshall also spoke on the Wreaths Across America and the problem they have at the Nat'l Cemetery of the Alleghenies. Last year, there were only 3,000 graves to place the wreaths on, and this year, there are 6,000 graves to decorate. Donations are being taken at $15/ wreath. After a floor discussion, it was moved and passed by the membership to donate 50 wreathes for the cemetery. For more information on this program visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.

Monongahela Area Business Growth Dinner Meeting Scheduled for October 10 While many think small town business is in the past, the Monongahela Area does not subscribe to that point of view. If fact, we at the Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce believe small town business is the future. There is a need for a quality of living that only a small community can deliver. The towns of Monongahela, Carroll Twp., New Eagle and surrounding areas deliver that quality of life in a big way. The Monongahela Area has great potential that can be realized with vision, leadership and cooperation with government.

On October 10 at 6 p.m. we will continue that discussion in a public forum and dinner with our State Senator Tim Solobay. At that meeting, we will ask the Senator to discuss what is happening at the state level that can specifically affect our local business, what is on the horizon, and any ideas he might have. The Chamber will then propose ideas that we would like him to consider. Afterwards we will then open the floor for questions and limited discussion. The meeting will take place at Monongahela Valley Hospital Education Conference Center.

All Chamber of Commerce membership meetings are open to the public but reservations are required since seating is limited. Reservations for the October 10 meeting must be made by October 1. Local Fire Departments Receive State Grants State Rep. Peter J. Daley II, D-Fayette/Washington, announced that four fire departments in Washington County were selected to share in $540,000 in state grants to protect rural communities from brush and forest fires.

A total of 141 volunteer fire companies in the Commonwealth were chosen. To qualify for the grant, companies had to serve rural areas where forest and brush fires are common. Priority was placed on those applicants seeking funds for projects that included purchasing wildfire-suppression equipment and protective clothing. Charleroi Federal Little Great Race to be Held Sept. 8 Scholarship Recipients to be Honored; Proceeds from Race to Benefit Two Locals

Three members of the Class of 2012 at area high schools have been selected as recipients of scholarships that will be presented at the 26th Annual Charleroi Federal Savings Bank Little Great Race (LGR) Saturday, September 8 in Charleroi.

The honorees are: • Adam Boyd Scholarship – Jessica Folsom and Chapin Meny, both June graduates of Charleroi Area High School. Folsom, the daughter of Jim and Debbie Folsom of Fallowfield Twp., will attend California University of PA to work towards a degree in physical therapy and sports medicine. Meny, the daughter of Joseph and Robin Meny of Fallowfield Twp., will major in psychology at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.

• Mary Ann Ghilani Memorial Scholarship – Connor Kane, a 2012 graduate of Ringgold High School. Kane, the son of Kevin and Sally Kane of Finleyville, will major in engineering at Penn State University’s main campus.

The committee is anticipating more than 1,000 runners and walkers for this year’s event, which will begin at 8:15 a.m. at Chamber Plaza in Charleroi.

Proceeds from this year’s race will benefit Rex Timko and Chad Skibo to help their families with medical expenses.

Timko, 4, is a Late Infantile Batten patient. Late Infantile Batten causes loss of muscle coordination and seizures along with progressive mental deterioration and can be controlled with medications and physical and occupational therapy.

Skibo is the son of Linda Murt Skibo of Skibo’s Hair Salon and Gary Skibo. Chad is a self-employed concrete contractor and he and his wife Casi are the parents of two children, Sydney, 6, and Khloe, 4 months. Chad was injured in an accident that resulted in the loss of one leg and serious injuries to the other. He has undergone numerous surgical procedures and extensive therapy.

The Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce Raiders and the Greater Rostraver Chamber of Commerce Bulldogs played a first-ever Softball Showdown at Charleroi Veteran’s Memorial Field in Charleroi on July 25. The Regional Chamber won the 7-inning game 18-15, winning a traveling “Chamber Pot” trophy to retain at Chamber offices until next year’s Showdown.

Tom Villella (MVRCC) of Villella Home Remodeling and Robert Crall (GRC) of Valley First Credit Union served as team coach/players, and former BVA superintendent Steve Russell and Charleroi sports legend Jim “Mouse” Chacko served as umpires. Gene Turtzer was the official announcer for the game.

The game started in MVRCC’s favor, who immediate scored and achieved a healthy lead by the 3rd inning. However, tables turned in the final inning with a flurry of hits by Rostraver. With players on base, Kevin Lee backed up for an impressive catch in left field to end the Showdown with MVRCC leading by three runs. Larry Christinis of SPHS was credited with a home run for the Regional team. Frank Uglik of Waddell & Reed hit a homer for Rostraver.

However, mortgage insurance plays a critical role in the real estate business by creating an opportunity for buyers to purchase property without having to take the time and budget to save large down payments.

Keep in mind that the source of all mortgage money is someone’s savings. Whether it is an individual, a group of investors or a financial institution,

the money is someone’s actual savings. Their goal is to make a decent return in the form of interest in exchange for bearing the risk of lending thousands or even millions of dollars to people they will never meet, so those people can buy a property the lender will never see, and waiting up to 30 years to be paid in full.

To safeguard their investment (savings), lenders carefully consider two separate issues: the buyer and the property. Does the buyer appear to have a reliable and sufficient monthly income to make regular payments and a history of repaying other creditors in a timely fashion? If so, is the property worth what the buyer is willing to pay in the unfortunate event that the buyer does not repay the loan?

An additional consideration lenders make when calculating their risk is how much of a “buffer” exists between the value of the property and the amount to be borrowed. Mortgage insurance insures the lender against losses in the event of foreclosure so they do not lose their money (savings). Lenders are more likely to issue a loan when their risk is lessened.

Here is an example: John and Jane Doe decide to purchase a house that costs $100,000. They have $5,000 (5%) to be used as the down payment. They apply for a mortgage in

the amount of $95,000. The lender will require mortgage insurance because the Doe family has less than 20% down. The mortgage insurance usually covers the upfront 25% of the loan amount. The lender will be able to file an insurance claim for up to $23,750 in losses in the event the Doe family undergoes foreclosure and the property is sold.

In general, whether it is private mortgage insurance (PMI) or FHA Mortgage Insurance Premiums (MIP), with few exceptions, the premium payments must be cancelled when the mortgage balance is paid down to 78% of the original value of the property, as long as the buyer has not been late with payments. Lenders are not required to cancel the policy for those buyers that do not make their regularly scheduled monthly payments.

Mon Valley Regional Chamber’s Annual Awards Event to be Held September 13 The Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce will honor the accomplishments of two local businesses, a nonprofit organization and an outstanding individual, at Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Anthony Lombardi Conference Center on Thursday, September 13 at its annual Awards Event. Keystone Bakery will be awarded the Chamber’s Excellence in Business Award. This award recognizes a member business that continually and consistently provides its customers with outstanding products and services.

Demonstrated longevity is an important aspect that the Chamber of Commerce wishes to recognize; it considers businesses operating for 20 years or more.

Keystone Bakery has been family owned since 1926, when Costas Croussouloudis emigrated from Greece to join an already decade-old bakery as a partner. Once located at 217 Schoonmaker Avenue, the business moved to its current site in Monessen in 1974. John Croussouloudis owned the bakery with his wife, Pauline, from 1959 until 2007 at which time J.J. Georgagis, a nephew to John and Pauline, and his wife Melissa purchased the business. Keystone Bakery also operates a store in Rostraver Township.

Nikolette is the daughter of Dean and Joni Simpson. She is a graduate of Charleroi High School and has enrolled in Seton Hill University to major in music therapy. Nikolette is an accomplished musician who plays flute, sax, piano, and sings in the church choir. She has logged over 150 hours as a volunteer in her community.

Wolfgang's home is in Coal Center. His parents are Lisa Lucas and James Zober.

He is a graduate of Geibel Catholic High School with a GPA of 3.97. He will be attending Wheeling Jesuit University where he plans to pursue a career in the field of scientific research in physics.

Local Worship “Missionary Night” Includes Dinner and Presentation in Belle Vernon

Pricedale Union Church Resumes Men’s Breakfast Series

Missionaries Phil and Martha Patalano will share their stories in a special service on Wednesday, September 19, at the Belle Vernon Church of the Nazarene.

The Patalanos are currently missionaries serving in São Tomé and Príncipe in Africa and have served the Church of the Nazarene there since 2008. They were previously missionaries in Angola from 2000 to 2007.

The event will start at 6:30 p.m. with a potluck dinner open to everyone, followed by the Patalanos' presentation. Admission is free, but a freewill offering will be collected to support the Patalanos' work, funded by the World Evangelism Fund of the Church of the Nazarene.

The Belle Vernon Church of the Nazarene is located at 108 Reed Avenue in Rostraver, near the North Belle Vernon line, and has been in ministry to the community since 1936. On Saturday and Sunday, September 22 and 23, Pastor Terry A. Anger will be speaking at Pricedale Union Church. The Saturday session will begin at 6 p.m. with a covered dish dinner and end with a talk from Pastor Anger. The Mid- Mon Valley Narcotic Prescription Drug Abuse Summit will be held Wednesday, September 26 at Charleroi Area School District. There will be two sessions: The first session will be at 8:30 a.m. in the gymnasium for Charleroi Area High School and Middle School teachers, students, and faculty.

The second session will be held at 6 p.m. at the Charleroi High School Auditorium for the healthcare workers, law enforcement, and the community.

Featured speakers at the event include Dr. Neil Capretto, Medical Director for Gateway Rehabilitation Center; Robert Hill, Chief Enforcement Administration’s Pharmaceutical Investigations Section; and members of the Charleroi Police Dept.

Come Join the 2012-2013 Mon Valley YMCA Masters Swim Team We are fitness swimmers, tri-athlete swimmers, competitive swimmers and non-competitive swimmers. We are pool swimmers and open water swimmers. We are fast and we are slow. We are young and we are old. We are men and we are women. What we have in common is we love to swim. This team is for adults 18 years of age and older. The only requirement for this team is that you must be a member of a YMCA. Our YMCA does not offer a specific team practice, so you would need to practice on your own. You pick and choose which swim meets you would like to attend; some are close while others require more travel.

The swim meets are held on Sundays with warm-ups at 11 a.m.

The events range from 25 yards to 500 yards while also including relays. You choose what events you would like to swim. The swim season is from September to March. If you attend 3 swim meets, you are eligible to go to the Championship meet at Clarion University.

Passive 3D or Active 3D TV Sets?

A: To many people, a 3D TV set is a 3D TV set. But it’s not.

There are two distinct systems being sold right now. Active and passive 3DTV are fighting it out to win the 3D format "Pothole" Highway Appliances crown, and LG have released data showing that passive 3D is preferred by viewers.

Passive 3D beats Active 3D in consumer study.

Passive 3D is found in most cinemas and uses circular polarization to separate the left and right eye images on screen. Active 3D needs a power source for the specs and each lens shuts to show each eye a different image.

Active 3D specs cost between $50-$100 per pair and require batteries. Passive glasses cost around $2 or just “borrow” a pair from your local theater.

There is much arguing over the systems, with proponents of active 3D claiming less flicker and a brighter image. Of course, passive users would argue with those points, and also mention the massive savings when needing additional glasses (some TV’s ship with one pair only!)

The study results were commissioned by LG who used Morpace to do the study.

The end result found that 80% of consumers prefer the passive 3D TVs over active 3D sets.

The study was not biased either as LG produce both types of 3D sets. The consumer test compared the LG passive glasses 3DTV against a Samsung active-shutter glasses-based 3DTV and separately against a Sony active-shutter set.

Morpace measured real-time feedback, and found that consumers preferred the passive 3D sets in many of the categories, including overall 3D experience, 3D picture quality and 3D effect. Users also much preferred the lighter passive 3D glasses available at your local cineplex.

It is expected that by the year 2014, 3D TVs will account for over 40% of the overall TV sales. And research by IHS iSuppli shows that by 2015, over half of those 3D TV sales will be for the passive 3D type. Of course you cannot judge a 3DTV system based on one study alone, so PC World have also tested the different 3D systems and made passive 3D the winner as well.

SPORTS Ringgold Rams Football Season is Underway

Ringgold Rams Varsity Football fans had their first chance to see the 2012 version of the team on Saturday, August 18 at a scrimmage with Baldwin High School. The one certainty in high school football is that the new team will always be different.

The team looks to have some additional depth If you can’t get the QB, block the pass.

Pass coming up for the Rams. (and size) on the line – I’m assuming that some of these big men may see double duty on offense and defense. Speedster Demetrius Lewis will be back, but the team has lost some speed with the graduation last year of Quad Law and Alfon Cook. We’ll All games are held on Friday evenings at 7:30 p.m. need a little more time to see if anyone will step up *Section Games and fill those slots. Quad Law’s younger but bigger brother Nico is being considered for the quarterback 08/31/12 Thomas Jefferson High School Away* slot, along with Chris Spahr. Last year’s always 09/07/12 Laurel Highlands High School Away* dependable kicker Skylay Fransco will be missed as 09/14/12 Belle Vernon Area High School Home* well, but we’ll see what the coaching staff comes up 09/21/12 Uniontown Area High School Away* with for the kicking game.

09/28/12 West Mifflin Area High School Home* We’ll all need to watch a few games to see if the 10/5/12 Albert Gallatin Away* passing game is going to blossom. For some time 10/12/12 Elizabeth Forward High School Away* now, the Rams have not been able to field that tall, 10/19/12 Highlands High School Home A Ram runner tries to get outside the defense.. lanky wide receiver that can outreach the defenders 10/26/12 Trinity High School Home* that other teams seem to come up with. Pass defense? A combination of a speedy wide receiver on the Baldwin team and a less-than-impressive Rams pass defense led to two long passing TDs for Baldwin, but it was just a scrimmage.

Have a look at the varsity schedule below. Last year’s Keystone Football Conference is now gone, and Ringgold finds itself in a pretty tough Section 1. Even though I’m a die-hard Rams fan, I’d have to go with the predictions of many of the pundits that pick 1-West Mifflin, 2-Thomas Jefferson, and 3-Ringgold. I hope the Rams prove us all wrong and take the Section. According to the WPIAL, five teams from each section will make the playoffs plus one wild card team, creating a 16-team field in each AAA and Quad A playoff bracket. It should make for an interesting playoff post-season.

Charleroi Soccer Celebrates 50 Years

September 2012 is an exciting month for Charleroi Soccer as it marks the 50th year for the boys’ varsity program. Celebrations will be held over 2 days starting the evening of September 7th with an awards dinner hosted by an anniversary committee in charge of events. The dinner will be held at the Charleroi Elks. The dinner is open to all but tickets must be purchased in advance at a cost of $30.

The second day of festivities will take place on September 8th at the WPIAL Section 6 game between the Charleroi Cougars and California Area at 7 p.m. at the Charleroi Area High School stadium. During half time, an All Half-Century Team will be honored. The team was chosen by a committee of coaches and is made up of the top boys’ soccer players in Charleroi history including: Mike Borelli; Joe Bosley; Chuck Bruce; Keith Conte; Lewis DiBernardi; Josh Gray; Jack Jacobs; Dennis Laskey; Darrin Lupori; Ronnie Lupori; Rob Maglicic; Cal Montgomery; Luke Paglia; Robin Rossi; Chad Roule; Vince Russell; Jeff Soles; and George Watkins.

Current boys’ soccer coach and event co-chairman, Tom Villella said, “Charleroi has a strong tradition of soccer that we’re very proud of.” Villella, a former Charleroi soccer player himself, was honored to have the opportunity to recognize past players and show his pride for the varsity soccer program. He’s hoping to have a great turnout for the game and a stirring show of support for the soccer program.

Ringgold Lady Rams Soccer Teams Schedule “Pink Out” Proceeds to Benefit MVH Oncology Center By: Samantha Milton

On October 3, the Ringgold Lady Rams 6 p.m. junior varsity and 7:30 p.m. varsity soccer games will both be “Pinked Out.” The girls, who will be playing at home against Mt. Lebanon, will all be decked out in pink to show their support for breast cancer survivors and anyone who has dealt with breast cancer in their families. They would like to “Pink Out” the Joe Montana Stadium and encourage everyone to show up at the games sporting as much pink as possible.

The boosters club will be selling various pink goodies such as cookies, cupcakes and popcorn and will be raffling off gift baskets in addition to a half the take drawing. All the proceeds raised will be donated to the Mon Valley Hospital Oncology Center.

If anyone is interested in donating baked goods or gift baskets to the cause please contact a member of the 2012 Ringgold Lady Rams Soccer Team.
