Bentleyville Borough Hosts Annual ‘Run for Alex’ Race

T

he annual ‘Run for Alex’ Race, sponsored by the From Alex with Love Foundation, was held on the streets of Bentleyville on June 2, 2012. The race is held annually in memory of Alexzandra Danielle Loos who, at the age of 15 in 2004, was struck and killed by a speeding car while walking home from soccer practice at Bentworth High Schoool. Loos was a star athlete in track and soccer. The race features a 5 mile and 2 mile run and a 1 mile walking course. This year’s participants totaled 1,188 runners and walkers. Proceeds from this event fund scholarships for local students.

2012 ‘Run for Alex’ Race winners include Kevin Gregg of McMurray, PA at 10:07 in the 2 mile run and Brandon Gillingham of Pittsburgh, PA at 27:41 in the 5 mile run.

2012 scholarship recipients include: Scott Wytovich, Jessica Cole, Shannon Alysse Scott, Katie Seech, Donald Zimak, Carey Wood, Kyle Cline, and Kara Dunmire.

Charleroi Borough to Offer Free Outdoor Movie Screenings The Borough of Charleroi will offer a new “Monday Night Movies” program this summer and fall. The event will be held at the Market House on McKean Ave. and will bring some new and classic movies to the venue.

The movies will be shown on July 23, August 27, September 24 and October 22. Start times vary with sunset times. Attendees are encouraged to come 30 minutes prior for music and prizes. Free popcorn will be available and guests are also invited to dress for the movie theme that night to win prizes. Some tables and chairs will be provided or those attending can bring their own chairs or blankets.

Gratified Citizen Expresses Thanks to School Board Member Dear Editor, Thank you, Rosalee Carroll.

Thank you for remembering why you are sitting on a school board in America.

Thank you for representing the taxpaying citizen residents. Thank you… ... for having memories of all those fixed, limited or dwindling income Charleroi Area School District resident citizen households who struggle to make ends meet, pay their bills, buy medications/pay medical bills, purchase enough food from dwindling ways and means, and scrimp to put clothing on their children and grandchildren, all without depending on the government to pay their way. ... for knowing that before something totally falls apart, that you must have enough common sense to make needful cuts and do without all extracurricular things. ... for seeing, that if certain parents want something they should have to pay out of their own personal pockets, instead of the constant and continued gouging of others for what they think their child should have. ... for recognizing that non-realistic demands should never be allowed to supersede logic when the base funding is just not there. ... for distinguishing that brick and mortar projects and purchases of unsound buildings are not wise pursuits, and also that it is working human beings who pay the bills, not the faceless "government." ... for having enough wisdom to know creating large debts in the middle of a shallow job market and depressive or recessive period is not a good route to take. ... for realizing that education should always trump sports that only take away from what a school should be doing - no matter what a small group of people might think or want.

... for calculating the end result of limited financed households who won't be able to pay their tax bills after all the non-realistic spenders have rung the bills up. ... for hearing that the taxpayers cannot afford any more "pie in the sky" thinking and/or spending from any level - like having a stadium that any over-spending debt-ridden college would be proud of?

Thank you for remembering that our children are supposed to be Americans, having a good basic education where parents can choose to pay for their own extra-curriculars, and knowing the end of the story about the Golden Goose.

Thank you, Rosalee Carroll, for having an American, mathematical, common sense logical, long-term rather than short-term quality and realistic mind that knows exactly why you are sitting on the school board.

And that fact makes we, the people, the majority of citizen taxpaying residents, happy and non-oppressed in being aware that we have representation, and that is what it's all about. What makes us happy in having affordable, quality education for our youngsters that fits the pockets of the majority, not the few who have obviously forgotten this fact.

Yes, thank you Rosalee Carroll, for remembering and representing the "Golden Goose," the majority of whose private-sector-working-necks having been longstretched on the cutting block and are fearful of the final severing blow that could come from every direction, even a school district. For then where will such tax payer funded entities and programs be when the "tax payer" dries up, dies, and becomes extinct?

37th Annual Duncan & Miller Convention, Glass Show Set For July 20-22 The National Duncan Glass Society announces plans for an exciting weekend as local collectors and glass enthusiasts join visitors from across the country at the 37th Annual Duncan & Miller Convention, Glass Show and Sale.

Special guest Jeffrey S. Evans, president of Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates located in Mt. Crawford, VA, will be the keynote speaker at the National Convention Dinner held on Friday, July 20th, at the George Washington Hotel.

He will also be an exhibitor at the Glass Show & Sale on Saturday and Sunday. Jeff’s firm conducts monthly catalogued auctions specializing in American glass and decorative arts. Ideal Weather Entices Throngs of People to Monongahela Fleatique

What do these numbers add up to? Thousands of shoppers filling the sidewalks + hundreds of vehicles lining Main Street + dozens upon dozens of vendors + over 60 custom and restored cars on display + one DJ playing classic hits. Answer: a terrific turnout for the 13th annual Monongahela Fleatique on June 2, 2012.

This popular annual event--hosted by the Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce--started at the eastern border of New Eagle, and stretched 2 miles to the west end of Monongahela. Long lines of tables on the sidewalks and numerous booths at Chess Park provided an enormous selection of merchandise for sale, and delectable food for a crowd of people reveling in the ideal weather conditions.

The 6th Annual “Motoring on the Mon,” sponsored by “The Power of Bowser” auto dealerships, was held at the Aquatorium, where 15 trophies were presented to a wide variety of spiffy-looking and souped-up cars and trucks. PHOTO CREDIT: GAIL ASKEW

Community Day and Fireworks Planned in Charleroi The Borough of Charleroi will hold its annual Community Day and Fireworks on July 7 from noon -10 p.m. The July 7th Community Day will include a Car Cruise and BBQ hosted by the Charleroi Fire Dept. in the Chamber Plaza from 2 p.m. until fireworks. Magic City Square will host a Regional Police Celebration for residents to get more information on the Regional Police Dept. between the hours of noon and 3 p.m. A patriotic bicycle parade will take place at 2 p.m. starting at the Chamber Plaza lot.

White Rose Karaoke will be providing singing opportunities from 5-8 p.m. at the square.

The Market House on McKean Ave. will have entertainment from 12 - 3 p.m. and 5 - 8 p.m. The 5 - 8 p.m.time slot will include entertainment by The Hobbs Sisters and Greg Capozzi. Food booths will also be offered in the Market House. Fireworks will begin at approximately 8:45 p.m. followed by a beach party at Magic City Square with DJ Jerry until 10 p.m.

Greater Rostraver Chamber Welcomes Incoming BVA Superintendent School may be out for many, but not Dr. John Wilkinson, incoming Belle Vernon Area School Superintendent who was the guest speaker at the Greater Rostraver Chamber June Luncheon. Dr. Wilkinson was introduced to the group by retiring Superintendent and GRC friend, Stephen Russell. Our best wishes for a happy retirement, Mr. Russell!

Dr. Wilkinson is ready to jump in to his new position with Belle Vernon and brings with him years of experience to handle the tasks at hand. Dr. Wilkinson was approved by the Baldwin-Whitehall Board of Directors in 2005 as supervisor of curriculum and instruction before being appointed, in 2007, as assistant superintendent of secondary education for the Baldwin Whitehall School District. He has served in that capacity for the past five years. Dr. Wilkinson received his bachelor’s degree from Geneva College and his master’s degree in elementary education and principals certification from California University of Pennsylvania. He earned his doctorate in education from the University of Pittsburgh in 2003. He taught middle school science at Steel Valley Middle School before a serving as dean of students at Steel Valley High School. In 1997, Dr. Wilkinson was named assistant principal at Northgate Middle / High School and then principal of Northgate’s Middle and High School in 1998.

While at Northgate Middle/High School, Dr. Wilkinson worked closely with the Northgate School Board, superintendent, colleagues / peers, and teachers to establish an Individual Learning Plan for each child in grades 9, 10, and 11. The individual learning plans were developed to assist students in reaching their full potential by assessing their academic, social and behavioral needs and developing a plan to address these needs employing any and all the resources of the district. The Individual Learning Plan is very similar to your file when you go see your family doctor. Using the medical model as a comparison, the Individual Leaning Plan identified academic strengths and needs just as your medical file describes you.

Dr. Wilkinson has conducted over twenty professional workshops across the state and has taught more than 7 Graduate level classes for aspiring principals for the University of Pittsburgh and Cal U.

GRC Plans Summer Picnic and Tournament for July, Welcomes Fitness Speaker Looking ahead, in July the Greater Rostraver Chamber of Commerce will welcome Don Doyle, Executive Director, at Center for Fitness and Health, Willow Pointe Plaza and learn more about corporate and individual wellness programs. In August, GRC members will gather for our summer picnic and mini-golf tournament at Bill’s Golfland. A break from our standard meeting format that allows for a fun filled afternoon! We will resume the regular meeting schedule for September, October and November. Guest speakers will be announced soon for the remaining meetings of 2012.

Forward Twp. Seeks Vendors and Help for Community Day

Former Mon Valley Resident Hosts Book Signing

The Forward Township Community Day Committee is happy to announce that a Community Weekend Event will be held on Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19 at Sunnyside Gallatin Park.

To make this a success, the committee is seeking vendors to participate in the event. Those interested in selling baked goods, crafts and/or food items should call Susie Skrinjorich at 412-251-6878 to register as a participant. Electricity will be available if required. The event will also have a flea market. Display tables will be provided for anyone who would like to sell any of their household items.

The Forward Township Community Committee will be holding planning meetings during the weeks leading up to the event. Anyone in the community who would like to volunteer some of their time helping to organize this event is urged to attend these meetings. Amy Elizabeth Smith, originally from the Mon Valley and a 1982 Ringgold High School graduate, will appear at a book signing and author reception at the Monongahela Area Library on Tuesday, July 10 from 6 - 8 p.m. This summer, she published a nonfiction literary travel memoir entitled All Roads Lead to Austen: A Year’s Journey with Jane. The book describes a year spent traveling and holding reading groups on Jane Austen in Guatemala, Mexico, Ecuador, Chile, Paraguay, and Argentina.

The former area resident teaches professional writing, creative writing, and literature at the University Amy Elizabeth Smith of the Pacific in Stockton, California. She has an undergraduate degree in Music from West Virginia University and a master’s degree and PhD in English from Penn State University.

Copies of Smith’s book will be available at the book signing, and a portion of the profit will benefit the Monongahela Area Library. For more information, call the library at 724-258-5409.

Lot owners and supporters of Mingo Cemetery in Union Twp. are urged to support the 2012 fund drive for this historical site. Those concerned do not want the cemetery to fall back into ruin due to neglect.

This is the second appeal for donations to the 2012 fund drive. The initial response was disappointing, as many may forget the condition of the cemetery 11 years ago—the road was totally deteriorated from water damage and neglect, and weeds had overrun the area.

With the help of donation drives, a new water drainage system was installed, the roadway was paved, and the grass was kept cut in the newer parts of the cemetery to keep weeds from overtaking the older areas. It takes money to continue with progress, and all contributions go directly back into the cemetery grounds. Please donate. Every dollar counts.

Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates Prepare for July Picnic The meeting was opened by CO Bill Hess, followed by the invocation by XO Barry Anders, and the Pledge of Allegiance. After the roll call, the minutes of the May meeting was read by Yeoman Jim Caldwell, and approved. The treasurer report was read by Treasurer Joe Acton and approved. Acton reported that a check for $500 was remitted to The Fisher House, along with a letter stating the Shipmates’ sincere appreciation for the work they were doing to help Veterans.

Committee reports were given next.

Publicity – Francis Dutch reported that if anyone has photos that they would like to have in the newspaper to submit them to him. Local Vets Council - Thanks was given to all who attended the Monessen and Monongahela Memorial Day services.

Parade committee – Keep November 11 open as Mon City will be hosting this year's event. Help is need on the Local Veterans Council. Joe Gallo made a motion for the MMVSM to donate $100 for the parade program book, which was approved.

Picnic committee – Joe Gallo confirmed the date for the picnic as Saturday, July 23, noon - 4 p.m. Cards will be sent out.

Flag presentation – Barry Anders reported the Flag Presentation Committee performed the Flag program on Wednesday, May 23 at the Senior Center in California.

For this event, the spouses accompanied the shipmates and a luncheon was served immediately following the program. One additional school finished out the 201112 school year, bringing this year's total to 2,200+ students and adults.

Uniform – George Hutchko sent letters out to the families of our deceased shipmates who received their uniforms from the shipmates funds, inquiring for the return of said items.

Sick List – Myron Sepitko, John Cooper, Rich Walters, Rocky Johnson, Perry Schwartz, James Bath, Joe Zywann and Ken Drummond.

Joe Gallo and George Essey gave a report on the Veteran's Oral History Program.

Each recipient was given $1,000. Valley 1st is dedicated to the youth of the community and to the advancement of financial literacy. By giving away scholarships to graduating high school seniors, they embody the credit union philosophy of "people helping people."

MACC Sets Fireworks Extravaganza The Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce and the local business owners are proud to continue the Independence Day Celebration. The fireworks extravaganza will be held Wednesday, July 4 at the Monongahela Aquatorium.

Entertainment will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the fireworks display at 9:45 p.m. A rain date of July 5th has been scheduled.

The firework display will be professionally fired by Starfire Corp. of North Cambria. This event is solely funded by Chamber members, private donations, service clubs and organizations throughout the community.

A number of bands will be performing: • Runway from 5:30 - 6:00 • Lowliners from 6:15 until 6:45 • Josie McQueen from 7:00 - 7:30 • Six Gun Sally from 7:45 - 8:30 • Danielle Barbe from 8:45 - 9:45 Various food vendors, game trailers and glow in the dark products will be available during the evening. No alcoholic beverages are permitted on the premises, no firecrackers and no glow in the dark products may be sold.

Members of the Chamber of Commerce will be collecting donations, selling glow products and chances for a 50/50 raffle. The winner of the 50/50 raffle will be announced prior to the fireworks.

Residents are strongly reminded to avoid the fireworks display site along Bunola River Road. Local police will be fining all stopped vehicles. The firework display will not commence until all Federal regulations are adhered to. The U.S. Coast Guard will close the river to all recreational boaters from 9:30 until 10:15 p.m. All Federal and Coast Guard waterway regulations will be strictly enforced.

Mon Valley Quilt Club Presents 1st Annual Arts Scholarship

The Mon Valley Quilt Club presented its first ever Mon Valley Quilt Club Scholarship to Julia Price, a graduating senior at Bentworth High School. This scholarship is awarded to a student who will pursue interests in the arts in college and is based on an essay entry students were required to submit. Julia is the daughter of Robert A. Price of Scenery Hill and will attend Washington & Jefferson College this fall to study graphic design and Asian studies.

The Mon Valley Quilt Club meets every first Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Mon Valley YMCA. They also schedule a special quilting day, usually the 3rd Saturday of each month, to work on quilts and projects. Prospective members are invited to attend all meetings. Rostraver Twp. Historical Sites Host Local Students On May 23, 185 elementary students from the Baldwin School District visited four historical sites located in Rostraver Township. The sites were the historic old Fells Methodist Church in Fellsburgh; a one-room subscription school erected in 1834 located on the road to the Cedar Creek Park; the restored Colonel Edward Cook House; and the Darr Mine disaster burial site at the Olive Branch Church.

The students were under the direction of Baldwin teacher Dawn Yoder.

At the Old Fells Methodist Church, students received the history of the Church

by Harry Beck, Mary Smith, and Raymond Popp, rang the belfry bell, and visited the cemetery. At the Concord School, the students were under the direction of Elaine Phillips and Amy Arrigo. The students wrote their names with quill pens and wrote on hand-held slate boards. At the Colonel Edward Cook House, they were given a tour and the history of Colonel Edward Cook by the 5th generation decedents Robert and Marlene Cook. Old-fashioned cookies were presented by Robert and Marlene. At the Darr Mine Site, the students were presented a piece of bituminous coal and a description of how coal was formed by James Greenwood and Frank Yoder.

The students, teachers, and parents traveled to the Westmoreland County Cedar Creek Park for a picnic lunch.

Mon Valley Artists Display Art in Pittsburgh Members of the Valley Art Club and the New Horizons Painters from the Center in the Woods are currently displaying works of art at the United States District Court building at 7th Ave. and Grant Street, Pittsburgh.

The exhibit will run through the end of August 2012. The public may view the art during normal business hours. The participating artists are: Anne Thomas Cepaitis; Sabra Clark; Anne Finnen; Joyce Gazdick; Christine Gilotty; Charlette Hill; Pat Jones; Mary Ann Kopach-Laber; Arabelle Lancaster; Mary Elaine Lozosky; Michele Meneskie; Judy Moore; Harriett Peters; Sally Taylor; and Susan Weaver.

Many of the paintings are for sale and they are in a variety media.

In addition to this exhibit, an exhibit is still ongoing at the SPHS lobby in Charleroi, PA. The club changes the exhibit every few months, so there is always new art to view and purchase.

The Valley Art Club is making preparations for their 70th annual juried exhibit that runs from Sunday, September 23, the opening of the show, through Thursday, October 4. The exhibit will be in Monessen, PA. The place of the show will be announced soon.

The club invites any artists who paint and draw in any medium to join us.

Daley Supports Legislation to Aid Organization Fundraising State Rep. Peter J. Daley II, D-Fayette/Washington, supported legislation that would further clarify and expand the types of games of chance that organizations can legally use to raise funds.

The House voted for a bill (S.B. 444) that would amend the Local Option Small Games of Chance Act, further clarifying the changes made to the act in February.

"These clarifications and expansions will give organizations more opportunities to hold drawings, coin auctions, raffles and nights at the races," Daley said. "For many social service organizations and emergency services agencies, these games are an important source of revenue for operating budgets. These organizations, in turn, do good work in the community.”

This legislation provides some needed clarification to the changes the legislature made in February, which should make it easier for organizations to comply with the law, while at the same time expanding the types of games that can be utilized to raise money for their organization.

The legislation, which returns to the Senate for concurrence, adds 50/50 drawings, coin auctions, selective raffles, a night at the races, vertical wheel games, and a 50/50 raffle specifically for Major League Baseball, National Hockey League and National Basketball Association affiliated charitable organizations to the list of approved games of chance.

Additionally, the bill would exempt eligible organizations that have proceeds of $2,500 a year or less from the annual reporting requirements of the act, as well as exclude eligible organizations, except for club licensees, that do not make more than $2,500 a year in proceeds from games of chance from required background checks if the application includes an affidavit affirming that they do not anticipate to collect more than $2,500 during the period for which the license is valid. It also clarifies that proceeds from the games could be used to fulfill an organization’s own public interest purpose.

Rostraver Public Library Schedules Dinner Auction On Friday, July 13, the Rostraver Library Board of Trustees will proudly present an evening of good food, good conversation, music by Jim Sykes and a live auction conducted by auctioneer George Hare, Sr. The event will take place at The Willow Room, Willowpointe Plaza, Belle Vernon and begins at 6 p.m.

Greater Monessen Historical Society Plans Civil War Exhibit, Events Starting on Saturday, July 7, 2012, the Greater Monessen Historical Society will unveil its new exhibit showcasing the life and career of Medal of Honor recipient and Monessen founder, Colonel James M. Schoonmaker. The exhibit will also focus on all the Civil War veterans of the Mon Valley area, as part of the sesquicentennial celebration of the American Civil War. The Schoonmaker family has donated over 60 photographs to the Heritage Museum. Colonel Schoonmaker was very active in veteran activities during his life, as well as being president of the PA Association of the Blind for many years. Anyone willing to loan Civil War items or photos of Civil War veterans for the exhibit is asked to contact the Museum at 724-684-8460.

As part of the Schoonmaker/Civil War Exhibit, the Historical Society will sponsor a Day of Living History at Monessen City Park on Saturday, August 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Civil War re-enactors will be at the park showing what life was like in a Civil War camp setting. There will be displays, marches, photo opportunities, food booths, children’s activities, etc. Celebrate Monessen’s annual Founder’s Day at the City Park this year!

The Historical Society is also sponsoring the “Civil War Experience” on Saturday, September 22 at the Monessen Fireman’s Eastgate Social Hall. The “Gone with the Wind” dinner will be catered by Two Fine Caterers and feature the live band “Acoustic Shadows of the Blue and Grey” and a special presentation by the Redstone Living Historians. Monongahela Donora Area Lions Club Revs Up for Car Show The Monongahela Donora Area Lions Club will be hosting their first car show on July 22 at the Valley Skating Center in Donora at 590 Galiffa Drive. Uni-Select is sponsoring this event with all proceeds going to Monongahela Donora Lions Club charitable projects.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the car show is from 12 - 4 p.m. The entry fee is $7, but with a canned good for area food pantries the price is reduced to $5. Vendor spots are available for $10. Also, the Lions Club is looking for donations for a Chinese auction of gifts baskets, gift certificates or merchandise, and a 50/50 raffle will be held, as well.

Donora Historical Society Ends Club Year with Church Review The final presentation before summer hiatus took place on Monday, June 4 and was on the St. Dominic’s Church keepsake booklet by author Ruth Yatsko and Joe Rudinec, who were on hand to discuss the rich history of the church, as well as the very beautiful pictures of the architectural details of the windows and building. A historical display was also set up to show the history of all Donora churches dating back to the late 1800s, when Donora was called West Columbia. Due to the anticipated larger-than-normal crowd of around 60 people, the meeting was held in the community meeting room at the Donora Public Library. A good time was had by all as they shared church and school stories.

While there will not be any presentations during the months of July and August, the museum will remain open.

The summer months for the Donora Historical Society are busy months for us. While we don’t have formal meetings, the summer is the time when we are able to concentrate on some of our more involved projects. If you have any interest in volunteering for any of our summer projects, please contact the museum at the phone number or email address below.

The Donora Historial Society invites you to save the date for the 2nd annual Cement City Walking Tour, which will take place on Sunday, October 14. The

tour will start at the museum at 1 p.m. with a slide presentation on Donora’s National Historic District – Thomas Edison’s Cement City, as well as a show of artifacts and original blueprints during the construction from 1916 and 1917. A walking tour will follow in the Historic District to point out some of the various architectural details. Light refreshments will be served. Washington Wine, Jazz and Pops Festival Ready to Rock Mingo Park Again One of the most unique summer festivals in the area will be held August 4 and 5—the second annual Washington Wine, Jazz, and Pops Festival. Held in Mingo County Creek Park, the event promises to have it all, including good wine, delicious food, beautiful outdoor scenery and fantastic performances throughout the weekend. Hours are Saturday, August 4 from noon until 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 5 from noon until 5 p.m.

The festival’s organizers and beneficiaries, the Washington Symphony Orchestra and the Mental Health Association (MHA), have announced a great performance line-up for this year's event. On Saturday, August 4 jazz performers are 1 p.m., Scott Boni Trio; 2:30 p.m., Salsamba; 4 p.m., Dave Throckmorton; and 5:30 p.m., R.H. Factor. On Sunday, August 5, WSO will kick off the afternoon of pops tunes beginning at 12:30 p.m. under the direction of Conductor Yugo Ikach. The Michael Passalacqua Blues Band will take the stage at 2 p.m., followed by the Pop Acapella vocalists at 3 p.m. The line-up concludes at 3:30 p.m. with the Washington Jazz Society Big Band playing until 5 p.m.

Monessen Blazing to Host 2012 Western PA Firemen's Convention Monessen Volunteer Fire Dept. #1 is proud to host the 2012 Western PA Firemen’s Convention. The Western PA Firemen’s Association is an organization consisting of approximately 10,000 firefighters, both volunteer and paid, from nearly 500 different fire companies throughout the Commonwealth of PA. The event will be held from August 9 - 14.

In addition to the convention business meetings, there will be plenty of fun and entertainment for the whole family. Plans are in the works for a comedy show on Friday and Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers on Saturday following the parade. There will be food vendors, competitions and contests throughout the event. Beginning Thursday, July 5, participating students will work on the creation, development and installation of murals. This unique opportunity will teach youth how to transform public spaces with artwork reflecting the character, culture and history of local neighborhoods.

The theme of this year's program will be dedicated to the steel mill industry. The mural is a commemoration to Monessen, PA history and will be located at 505 Donner Ave. at the Monessen Historical Society.

Jim Winegar, a Greene County artist who serves as vice president of the Artists' Co-op in Washington, PA and Bobbi Fine, an instructor for Allan and Wilson's Digital Illustration Program at DEC, will oversee and teach DEC's Youth Art Program.

Emphasizing a cross-cultural atmosphere, the program welcomes youth from all backgrounds. The Youth Art Program is still accepting applicants. Youth, ages 1418 years of age, must meet income guidelines, be a Westmoreland or Fayette County resident, and attend classes regularly. Students who are interested in careers in the arts, graphic design, and commercial entertainment industries should consider this program. Participating students will develop skills that will help increase their career marketability.

Classes begin Thursday, July 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday through August. Classes will meet once a month, thereafter, from September through June 2013. Bus transportation from specific pick up points will be provided. Participating students will receive a meal for every class. A stipend will also be paid to students.

Memorial Day Celebrated in Monongahela with Community-Wide Parade

She wanted to see what this was all about.

Like many other Mon Valley communities, Monongahela began its Memorial Day with a parade through town.

Later in the morning there was a well-attended ceremony at the Veterans’ Memorial in Monongahela Cemetery.

The grassy knoll opposite the memorial stage was packed with folks listening The Mon Valley Leathernecks show the colors to the various dignitaries during the National Anthem. reminding us of the sacrifices made by the Veterans now interred in their home soil. Representatives of our city, county and state governments were there and listened as we all did to patriotic songs done by the Ringgold High School Band and vocal groups.

Groups taking part in the ceremony and/or the parade were the Mon Valley Leathernecks, the Mon Valley Honor Guard, the Mon Valley Shipmates, the Ringgold High School Marching Band, and American Legion Posts 302, 949 and 613.

Monessen Public Library Holds Steeler Season Tickets Fundraiser; Cultural Center Displays High School Art Monessen Public Library and Cultural Center is settling in to the newly renovated facility at 326 Donner Ave. There is also a brand new website: www.monessenlibrary.org. Monessen VFD Celebrates With First Responders Banquet The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association held their 1st Annual Dinner Banquet honoring the City of Monessen’s first responders on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the Monessen Volunteer Fire Dept. #1 Social Hall. Lou Mavarakis, AHEPA president, welcomed the approximately 300 guests that attended the banquet. Joseph R. Greco, AHEPA vice president, served as Master of Ceremonies. The invocation was given by Fr. Joseph DiStefano of St. Spyridon Church. Guest speakers included Mary Jo, Smith, Mayor of Monessen; Kip Deleonibus, retired assistant fire chief from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire; Patrick Picciarella, president of the Mon Valley Police Chief’s Association; Thomas McElree, Executive Director of EMSI; State Senator Tom Solobay and State Representative Ted Harhai.

Recognition awards were presented to one person from each of the city’s 4 emergency service organizations. Monessen Police Chief Mark Gibson presented the award to K-9 Officer Aaron Thompson; Mon Valley EMS Chief William Hess presented the award to Taralee Wyland; Stanley Marinos, Jr., Chairman of the Board MVFD #1 presented the award to Tony Evans; and Chief Donald Novak MVFD #2 presented the award to Jamie Sethman. Aaron, Taralee, Tony and Jamie also received citations from State Senator Tom Solobay and State Representative Ted Harhai.

A special plaque was presented to AHEPA President Louis Mavarakis and Vice President Joseph R. Greco by the Monessen VFD #1 Auxiliary honoring their group for taking the time and effort to honor the city’s first responders.

The benediction was given by Father Michael J, Crookston from the Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic Church.

The remainder of the evening was spent dancing to music provided by DJ Bill Lemon. Each of the four first responders organizations receive will receive a monetary donation from the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association in the near future.

Monongahela Area Library to Host Teen Program Featuring Melissa Carey The Monongahela Area Library will host Melissa Carey, author of Macie's Guide to the Odd, Strange, Bizarre, Unique, Unexplained and Twisted in a program for middle-school aged students about dream symbols and creating a dream journal.

Slated for Tuesday, July 10 from 5 - 7 p.m., the program is intended for youngsters aged 9 -14 and designed to help young would-be writers and creative artists indentify and apply dream symbols. Mon Valley Honor Guard & Firing Squad Serves Community with Pride

Members of the Mon Valley Honor Guard & Firing Squad recently attended the Flag Day Ceremony held in Monongahela on June 14. Fifteen of the group’s members attended the evening event, which took place at Chess Park along Main St. The Honor Guard attends many patriotic events such as the Flag Day Ceremony, in addition to their primary purpose of attending funerals of veterans throughout the Mon Valley. According to the Guard’s commander, Bill Fawcett, they have 23 members and typically have 11-16 members attend any given event.

Fawcett explained that typically funeral directors will contact them when a family member requests their attendance at a funeral. He doesn’t believe, though, that enough people are aware of the services they provide and hopes that more will take advantage of their services. The members are proud of their duties and hope that their presence brings a due sense of honor to the events they attend.

Mon Valley Honor Guard members are veterans and belong to the Monongahela, Carroll Twp., or Finleyville American Legion or the Monongahela VFW. The Honor Guard is always looking for new members, according to Fawcett. If a veteran who belongs to any of the mentioned organizations is interested in joining, he is asked to contact Commander Bill Fawcett at 724-258-2751.

“Yough n Roll” Family Bike Ride Set for July 14 Biking enthusiasts and anyone interested in a great opportunity for the entire family are invited to grab their bicycles, put on their walking shoes, get out the baby strollers and join us in the 19th Annual Yough n Roll on Saturday, July 14.

The Mon Yough Trail Council, one of the region’s oldest organizations promoting safe cycling as a fun family fitness event, is once again presenting the ride/walk. Charleroi Area Historical Society Learns Westmoreland County History The June meeting of the Charleroi Area Historical Society, Inc. took place in the meeting room located at the Goaziou Building in Lisa Hayes was the guest speaker for Charleroi. After welcoming the many members the CAHS June meeting. who were in attendance, President Beth Perret had Larry Cowell lead the Pledge of Allegiance, then introduced VP and Program Chairman Lois Hawe. Hawe then introduced the evening speaker, Lisa Hayes, Director of the Westmoreland County Historical Society, founded in 1908. Hayes thanked CAHS, Inc. for the opportunity to speak to them. She passed out 8 interactive cards to various Society members to read during her PowerPoint presentation titled "The Star of the West" which focused on Westmoreland County. She presented how her county came into being, tied in other counties as they quickly developed thereafter, and referenced the creation of Hannastown and Forbes Road going west and many of the events surrounding it.

Hayes ended by pointing out how important history is and how much one can learn from its pages and even today it can be applied to life in an individual and collective sense, took a few questions and then ended her presentation.

Lois Hawe then presented the information regarding the next two meetings: July’s annual picnic will be held at 6 p.m. at the SPHS Sr. Center and in August, two representatives from the California Historical Society will speak on California, PA history.

A short business meeting took place after where in the minutes were read by Karen Jurczak and financial information was given by LaVerne Williams and Vicki Molesky.

President Perret then reviewed the particulars about the upcoming annual July potluck gathering and passed a sign-up list for everyone to register what they are bringing. They were encouraged to call her if they were unsure and to RSVP guests, plus reminded them about other costs regarding that event.

The next CAHS, Inc. Board meeting will take place July 9.

Who’s Ready for a Scavenger Hunt?

The Bar, located on Main Street in Monongahela, will be holding its 4th Annual Scavenger Hunt on Saturday August 18 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. The scavenger hunt will take place in teams of two. Each team will have a list of items to find and bring back or activities to engage in and document with a picture.

“The scavenger hunt isn’t a race; the teams have a couple of hours to get as many things on the list as possible. Someone said that it sounds stressful, but it isn’t, it’s always a lot of fun. The stress level depends on how competitive you are, I guess,” laughed Sharon Rippel, owner of The Bar. Each team needs a method of transportation to get around town to collect the items on the list and a camera to document the fun activities on the to-do list. At the end of the night, scores will be tallied and there will be prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Cultural Phenomenon Coming To Monessen

At this month’s Council meeting, a motion was approved for the American Wind Symphony Orchestra agreement.

Although two members of Council opposed the motion, the majority ruled, which will bring this exciting cultural event to the Monessen boat launch on July 24. The American Wind Symphony Orchestra (AWSO) is a unique musical troupe that travels along the waterways of the United States, the Caribbean, and Northern Europe in a 195-foot-long steel barge named Point Counterpoint II. This spectacular silver wonder is equipped with a 75-foot-wide stage surrounded by an acoustical shell that gives audiences watching from the shore an awe inspiring performance of exceptional quality.

The AWSO was founded in Pittsburgh by Robert Boudreau in 1957, aided by funding from the H.J. Heinz Company, Duquesne University, and others he brought to life a vision of a floating orchestra that is now celebrating it’s 55th year. Mayor Smith expressed a great deal of passion for this event, as she explained, “The effort we are making is to turn the city into a cultural area with arts and humanity.”

Other issues covered at the June 13 meeting included the adoption of an updated ordinance regulating the obstruction of sidewalks in the city and providing rules for their use. This new ordinance will allow businesses to put out advertising signs but merchandise is not permitted on the sidewalk unless

Council specifically approves a sidewalk sale.

Also approved was a request from the Greater Monessen Historical Society for permission to fire non-projectile guns, build a fire, and cook in City Park on August 18, 2012 for a living history reenactment that will be part of the Civil War 150th Anniversary celebration.

A resolution was adopted to retain Kaplin/Stewart, Attorneys at Law, as special counsel for legal advice and representation regarding the redevelopment of the city’s riverfront area.

A number of city resident’s concerns were also addressed. The complaints mainly centered on several dilapidated or unkempt houses in Monessen. The city already has work orders for some of the properties and other will be condemned and put on the demolition list.

As funds become available those houses will be torn down. Concern was also expressed over the condition of the city walkway behind Summit Ave. The walkway is in disrepair and a work order is already in place for its restoration.

Finally, Mayor Smith issued a reminder for Monessen residents that the city has an ordinance in effect, which prohibits and prevents the use and sale of firecrackers, skyrockets, roman candles, M-80s, M-100s, cherry bombs, blockbusters, pineapples, quarter-sticks, half-sticks, and other pyrotechnics. Ground and handheld sparklers and toy caps are permitted.

Anyone wanting to have a fireworks display must post a $500 bond at City Hall.

New Eagle Mayor Center Stage

It wasn’t early July 4th celebrations, but the fireworks were flying at the June 5th New Eagle Borough meeting. Mayor Glenn Petticord was put on the defense during much of the meeting.

New Eagle Democratic Committee Chairman Larry Taylor was the first to address Mayor Petticord, stating that he had received complaints from citizens that Petticord was “selectively enforcing ordinances in the borough.” Petticord seemed dismayed, suggesting that he cites anyone who he sees violating ordinances – including his own neighbors. Petticord told residents that if someone is not cited it is because the violation was not seen, and residents can alert him by contacting Secretary Linda Hall.

Resident Danny Foust spoke next concerning the recent towing of a vehicle from his residence. The vehicle, which was parked on the street, had expired registration. The topic quickly turned to the issue of a “No Parking Here to Corner” sign on Center Ave. near Foust’s residence, and the necessity of the sign.

Foust publicly accused Mayor Petticord of blaming Council President Jack Fine (who is a neighbor to Foust) for the placement of the sign.

Fine denied asking for the sign placement, stating that the mayor is in charge of all signage in the borough. The mayor also denied that he mentioned Fine as the reason for the sign placement.

The sign topic continued into a lively discussion between Petticord, Fine, and residents. One stop sign that was determined to not meet PennDOT height requirements is at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Long Drive. The stop sign and the “No Parking” sign on Center Avenue will be removed. Resident Danny Foust stated that he will not park in the “No Parking” area. Council determined that the sign won’t be necessary.

In other business, Council will soon be entering into a work-sharing agreement with Donora. The arrangement will allow New Eagle to use Donora’s demolition equipment and their trained operator.

Renting the equipment will offer New Eagle a substantial savings.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 3 at 7 p.m.

Fallowfield Supervisors Appoint Emergency Management Assistant Vote on Target Shooting Ordinance Delayed Until July Meeting

Fallowfield now has an Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator.

At their regular meeting on June 27, township supervisors appointed Michael Kresich, 43, a township resident, to the newly-created volunteer position to serve as an assistant to fire Chief Anthony Fleming, who is the township’s Director of Emergency Management.

“This is something that is very important to the township,” said supervisor chairman Earl Sadler in proposing the appointment. “In the past, the township has been lax, and we have to be prepared in the event of tornados, heavy snows, flooding or any type of emergency. Mr. Kresich and Chief Fleming will work to get our Emergency Management Plan ready to submit to the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.”

The campus of the Charleroi Area

School District has been designated as an evacuation and triage center in the event of any disaster. Sadler said the school will be used to distribute needed medications, provide aid for injured persons. Kresich, Fleming and state police will coordinate activities at the center if it is needed.

“We’ve seen from past snow storms and heavy rains where we are lax,” Sadler said. “We’re working to improve that, and we are also required to have an emergency plan to the state. We’ve been looking for over a year and a half for someone with the knowledge to do this, and (Kresich) has all the credentials to do this. It’s a very critical thing that we’re doing for the township.”

Kresich is currently is a member of the Charleroi Regional Police Department, the Fallowfield Township Volunteer Fire Department, and is a police officer for the Charleroi Area School District. He moved to Fallowfield Township four years ago

from Braddock, where he had been a firefighter since the age of 16. He holds more than 200 certificates in law enforcement and 200 certificates in Emergency management and in the fire and rescue field.

Kresich said he has already been working to coordinate activities at the school district campus and with other communities and agencies in the event they are needed during an emergency or disaster. Kresich said his role will be to work closely with Chief Fleming who would likely “have his hands full in coordinating fire department and rescue efforts.”

To be activated, the governor’s office would have to declare a state of emergency for the township. Kresich and Fleming are required to submit a new plan to the state every two years.

In other action by the supervisors, they approved the sale of an old 72” John Deere Tractor mower to William Rothahaar for $4,101. Rothahaar’s bid

was the highest among four bidders for the used tractor. Supervisors had asked for a minimum bid of $3,500.

The supervisors also approved a resolution to follow state guidelines established for the destruction of old records, and approved a $7,125 expenditure for the extension of guide rail along Kennedy Road.

Supervisors tabled any action on voting for an ordinance regulating target shooting in the township, an issue that has been the topic of public discussion and complaints for the past two months.

Sadler said he expected to have a revised ordinance ready for passage at the July 25 regular meeting. He told residents assembled that the ordinance would be discussed at the supervisors’ work session scheduled for Monday, July 16 at 6 p.m. He invited any resident who wished to speak to the ordinance to attend the work session.

Paving Continues in Carroll Twp.

Markethouse Offers Movie Night for Summer

Spring and summer in most municipalities means roadwork, and that’s what is currently happening in Carroll Twp. Blacktopping projects have been underway with a much-anticipated paving project set to happen in the following weeks.

At the June 5th regular supervisors meeting, the Board expressed happiness for a paving project that will cover the area of Victory Hill. The township has been waiting three years for the funding of the project. Carroll Twp. received a grant from the Washington County Redevelopment Authority that will allow the work to be completed this summer. Carroll Twp. doesn’t receive the amount of grant money that neighboring townships and cities in the Mon Valley receive, so this has been a long time coming, according to the Board.

In keeping with warm weather duties, the township has interviewed and hired two summer workers to help the grass-cutting crew. According to Secretary Sharon Cramer, the two new hires are Donald Foster III and Zachary Naylor. The two young men are enthusiastic and hard working. The Board anticipates a successful summer, with the township and the workers benefitting from the experience.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 3 at 6 p.m.

After brainstorming for some time on how to best utilize the Market House on McKean Avenue, Charleroi Borough Council came up with two ideas that are now in place. The first was to install basketball hoops for use with youth basketball.

The second is to offer Market House Monday Night Movies.

The outdoor movies started on June 25th with a showing of “Despicable Me” starting at 8:30 and sponsored by Mon Valley Signs. The second showing will be “Grease” at 8:30 on July 23rd, sponsored by Gutman Oil Co. Next, on July 27th there will be a showing of “The Great Outdoors.” More movies are in the works for August.

The fun starts 30 minutes before the show, with prizes for the best dressed for the particular movie that night and free popcorn. Those attending are urged to bring a chair or a blanket for the floor. “We’re trying to get the kids off the streets by giving them some good, clean fun,” said Council President Mark Alterici.

Bentleyville Attempts to Find Solution For Unpaved Street

The June 5 Bentleyville Borough meeting opened with guest Tim Jansante inquiring about the paving of David Dr. in the Meadowcroft Plan. Residents receive no mail, snow removal, streetlights or other benefits because the street was never paved. Guest Clark also spoke, citing the only service residents currently receive is garbage collection. Although the Borough is not responsible for paving this street, Solicitor Makel will contact developer Ken Carlyle to discuss what can be done to resolve this issue for David Dr. residents.

Plans for the Big Jim’s Minor Land Development (next to Dollar General) were approved as presented. Any changes will have to be resubmitted to the Planning Commission.

Demolition of the Marvin Taylor property at 112 Smith St. was approved, with the Solicitor authorized to contact all who hold liens, mortgages, etc.

A motion to advertise for bids for the 2012 paving project was approved.

Submitted bids must be received by noon July 3, 2012.

North Charleroi Property Cleanup in Full Stride

The effort by North Charleroi to clean up blighted properties is moving well, according to Mayor Lee Hall, as property owners have begun complying with the Borough’s zoning laws.

Hall, who serves as Borough zoning officer, told council members at their June 18 meeting that he and his deputies have issued 12 citations to property owners violating the ordinance, which have resulted in their cleaning up the properties. Property owners face a $300 fine if they fail to comply with the ordinance. Hall began the enforcement program by sending property owners a letter, but he told council that a citation has achieved better results.

“I think it’s a whole lot better than sending a letter out,” he said. “The letter said that we were going to cite [them] if this doesn’t happen. The citation tells them they’re on the fence.

You’ve got to do something now.”

Hall said the Borough will drop the $300 fine if the owner brings their property into compliance. He said there are still a dozen or so owners who are awaiting hearings. One property owner cited is a man who is hospitalized, which the mayor said will be given additional time.

In other business at the meeting, resident Denver Byron asked Council

if he could acquire property adjacent to his at 916 Conrad Ave. The property is located off of Ryan Ave. and has been designated as a “paper street.”

Byron has been maintaining the property, including grass cutting and snow removal for the past 15 years.

Council authorized Solicitor Christine Cardinale to meet with Byron to work out details of the property transfer.

Borough resident Patricia Demarco of Highland Ave. asked Council about the policy of dogs running loose in her neighborhood. Demarco said she returned home recently to find a neighbor’s pit bull in her yard.

Demarco said the dog had broken free of its chain and collar. “This has happened more than once,” she said.

Demarco said police were called, but officers did not cite the dog owner.

Council President Joseph Villella told Demarco that animal control should be called in the event unlicensed dogs are roaming neighborhoods, who are empowered to cite the owners.

In another matter, Councilman Terry Semon, who heads up the sanitation department, reminded residents that there will be no trash collection on Wednesday, July 4. Instead, trash collections will be pushed back one day from the normal schedule because of the holiday.

A motion to advertise to vacate Paper Street Center/Central Ave. was approved.

The resignation of Animal Control Officer Kim Secreet was accepted.

Sherry Hreha, who resigned from the Borough secretary position on May 22, 2012, is owed $7,920 in unused sick, vacation, and personal days. It was approved to pay her this amount. Her resignation was accepted with regrets and gratitude for her years of service to the Borough. A motion to hire and bond Kim Sacco as Borough secretary was approved.

The addition of a new address of lot 33 to new owners at Old West Mobile Park, 321 Beallsville Rd. was approved.

July 7 is Fireworks Day, with activities planned for all day at Richardson Park.

It was approved to accept the Lioness Club offer to purchase youth playground equipment at the cost of $7,300 to be installed at Richardson Park.

A motion to continue this meeting on June 18 at 7 p.m. was approved. At the continuation, signed, sealed bonded bids for the construction for a new block recreation building, to be built at Richardson Park, were opened. A motion to accept the lowest bid (of five submitted bids) by Shumar Construction at $27,500 was approved. An additional cost of approximately $300 to run water and drain lines while the trench is open during this construction was approved, also.

Donora Sewage Project Wraps Up

The patience of Donora residents and all involved in the Donora Place Plan Sewer Extension Project has been rewarded as the project is essentially complete.

Donora Council accepted a “Certificate of Substantial Completion” letter from Gannett Fleming, Inc. of Pittsburgh at the June 14, 2012 monthly meeting. Mandatory tap-in letters will soon be mailed to Donora residents within the Sewer Extension Project area. Residents will be allotted 120 days from the receipt of the letters to comply with the public main sewer tap-in requirements.

Although the project is complete, lingering problems have arisen on at least one Donora resident’s property. Wally Fronzaglio addressed Council concerning a problem with water and debris washing onto his driveway since the road – post-sewer work – is now four inches higher than his driveway.

Councilwoman Marie Trozzo asked Council and Tim Durka from the Public Works Department to have a “cooperative effort” with the sewage contractor to help fix the problem if it is attributable to the sewage work.

Mr. Fronzaglio also revisited a complaint from a previous meeting in February concerning the deplorable condition of properties near his home.

The properties are at the end of Allen Ave. and 9th St. Council stated that they will have Tim Durka contact the owner and ask his intentions with the property. Council may move forward

with condemnation proceedings.

Council also discussed another continuing problem relating to residents not cleaning up after their dogs when walking them. Mayor Lignelli asked Tim Durka to cite anyone seen leaving their pet’s waste.

Councilwoman Trozzo further emphasized the point by encouraging Durka to stop and ask residents walking pets if they have a bag to clean up the waste. A warning could then be issued.

In other business: Council approved the hiring of Howard B. Rider of Belle Vernon as a part-time police officer, pending verification of Act 120 certification and a background check.

Council approved the hiring of Phillip Dunsheath and Neal Joseph Rands, of Donora, as part-time Street Dept. employees.

Council approved the establishment of a temporary summer rate of $10/hour (increase from $8.25/hour) for all parttime employees of Donora Street Dept. (effective June 17 - Oct. 6, 2012).

Council approved payment in the amount of $2,137.50 for several purchases from the Commonwealth of PA Federal Surplus Property Division in Harrisburg, PA. The purchases include: a 1993 Ford F350 XL custom-built ambulance to be used as the combination fire chief truck and animal control vehicle, two drug evidence lockers for Donora Police Dept., 4 replacement teeth for the 1996 Komatsu demolition excavator, and 6 used replacement chairs for the administration building.

Teens in Monongahela Provide Input to Skateboard Park Plans

There was an atypical sight at the Monongahela City Council meeting on June 13, 2012 - 6 local teenagers showed up for the meeting. They were there to provide input regarding the skateboard park which is being planned as part of the Aquatorium renovations.

Previously, Council had expressed its intent to ask local teens for their ideas on how the park should be constructed (within a budget of $100K), and furthermore extended an invitation to have them help build it.

One of the young men was happy he would not have to drive to Wheeling, WV to use a high-quality skate park any more, and that the facility is not designed for bicycles, too. The group suggested the concession stand be open more often, and perhaps bands could play music in the park area. They hoped that vandals would not ruin the new park; Council responded that surveillance cameras are in operation, and the police department is located nearby.

Council reminded them that individual protective gear will be required when the teens skateboard there.

The Mid-Mon Valley Transit has notified Monongahela that its match for state funding will be $2,831 for 2012-

13, which is $291 less than last year’s share.

Two properties were approved for demolition: 126 Chess St. and 209 Chess St. Mayor Kepics sternly warned dog owners that they must cleanup after their dogs, or they will be cited.

Councilman Ken Kulak was selected as the winner of the “Dancing With Our Stars” competition on June 9, 2012 in New Eagle. He proudly displayed his 16” chrome trophy, topped with a disco ball. Proceeds benefit the Monongahela 4th of July fireworks celebration.

As a result of the Smart Government Initiative meeting attended by Councilmen Kulak and Bill Hess, it was learned that funding of $7,500 is available for a professional engineering study of recycling programs. Council voted to participate; no Monongahela funds are required, and there is no obligation to adopt any specific action.

The low bid for construction of a new maintenance garage is $456K, but it exceeds available funding by $39K. A surplus from the road maintenance account will be reprogrammed to make up the difference.

This month’s beautification award was earned by the property at 603 Mound St.

The Greater Rostraver Chamber of Commerce selected Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region as its June Business of the Month. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region is the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in the world.

In 1975, Big Brothers Sisters of Westmoreland County was formed to provide services to children through mentoring relationships. On May 19, Carroll Creamery owners, Keith and Lynn Thurner, swirled an ice cream cone for customers for the very first time. The ice cream shop is located on 4th St. in Monongahela in Eck’s (formally Step II) parking lot.

While the small building used to house a barber shop, it has now been transformed to an ice cream lover’s dream.

Carroll Creamery, named for Carroll Township, may not have any food items

on the menu, but the ice cream list is quite extensive. “We have over 24 soft serve flavors in addition to the regular vanilla, chocolate and twist options.

Plus, we serve sundaes, twisters, shakes and ice cream sandwiches,” said Lynn Thurner.

The picnic tables with umbrellas set up outside set the mood for a summer night gathering place. “We really want everything to be community orientated.

Lorraine Mossburg, owner of Lorraine’s Family Restaurant in Speers, will turn 80 this month and is retiring. She will hand over the reigns to her daughter, Marilyn Semian, and grandson, Joe Semian.

Born Lorraine Gouker, she was raised in Glassport. After a family move to Clairton, she attended Clairton High School. Lorraine loved to work, hated her new school, and begged her dad to quit so she could work, to which he finally agreed.

She began a long career in the restaurant industry, working at Bowen’s Drugstore in Wilson, moving on to Irwin Pretzel in McKeesport, and then on to US

Steel’s Irvin Works Canteen. She went to Rondinelli’s Pizza in Wilson and then to the Blue Flame Restaurant in Jefferson Hills.

In the decision to go out on her own, she opened Little T & L Restaurant in Elizabeth and opened Mossberg’s Restaurant with her husband in Elizabeth. In 1991, she sold her half of Mossberg’s to her husband and opened Lorraine’s Family Restaurant in Speers on Guttman Ave., where she has been since.

Even though she is retiring, Lorraine says she will still be around, as the restaurant has been home to her for many years. Her family, friends, and many long time customers will be there, and of course, it will still need some supervising!

Valley Seniors Club Heads for Lancaster The Valley Seniors Club met on Tuesday, May 22 in the Riverside Place meeting room and opened with the Pledge to the Flag led by Marlene Owens. She thanked Joan McCluskey and Madeline Pierce. who did a fabulous job chairing the April meeting. It was reported that member Doris Smith has moved out of the area to Chicago. Fred Owens conducted the attendance signup sheet.

The departure time on June 12 to Lancaster will be at 6:30 a.m. from Charleroi. Members who have signed up for the Ohio Brown Bag Amish trip on August 9 were reminded to make their payment ASAP. The signup sheet for the October 6 trip to Oil City for the Apple Festival is available and the payment due is only for the bus trip and food vendors are available at various locations at the festival.

Members made several suggestions for future trips which included the Appassionato, a magical horse show which highlights horses, riding, light effects and music; the Priory Christmas Show; and Branson. Trips that may be scheduled for the spring is a Riverboat Cruise in Europe; Seneca Niagara Falls in New York State; and the Philadelphia Flower Show with an English Garden theme.

A covered dish picnic luncheon will be held on July 17. The Christmas dinner is tentatively scheduled for the 3rd Sunday in December due to many members' prior commitments.

Our meetings during July will be on Tuesdays at the Finleyville Community Center, with the doors opening at 10 a.m. There will be meetings on July 3, 10, 17 and 24, but there will be no meeting July 31.

Catered lunches will be served on July 3, 10, and 17. Early Bird Bingos start at 10:30 a.m., and a “grocery bingo” will be featured on July 10. Our next covereddish dinner will be on July 24, again chaired by Rosemarie Zrimsek.

Kicking up some dust

A fun show on Saturday, June 16 drew a nice turnout of horses and riders to Cox's Arena near Monongahela (Park Avenue Extension). The Sunday fun show featured an all-day card of events for pee wee, junior and senior riders.

The more experienced riders (juniors and seniors) took part in electronically timed barrel and pole events with ribbon awards for riders with the highest scores. There were 27 events on the card Lunchtime for the day—the big one being the jackpot barrels featuring a cash prize for the winner.

A weekend afternoon at Cox's Arena makes for a nice family outing for both riders and spectators. There’s no charge for spectators, and refreshments are available.

It’s not uncommon to see riders on horseback lined up in front of the refreshment stand.

Monongahela Hosts Fishing Derby Mingo Rod and Gun Club Runs Annual Kids’ Event

June 16 was sunny and warm, and the 80 or so kids that showed up at the City of Monongahela Aquatorium caught and released over 60 fish in the Mingo Rod and Gun Club Annual Fishing Derby.

The merchants and Council of Monongahela missed hosting the annual fishing derby last year due to the renovation work ongoing at the Aquatorium. This year’s derby brought out about 80 kids with moms, dads, grandparents or big brothers on hand to help out. The derby ran from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. and there was lots of action. The kids fished either from the Aquatorium or from the banks of the river on either side. A variety of fish were caught, and members of the Mingo Rod and Gun Club ensured that the fish were netted, measured and released.

There were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prize trophies for the largest fish caught in the 1-5, 6-10 and 11-15 age groups and a single trophy for the most fish caught.

The contract services of Janet Day to provide speech therapy for the extended school year at an hourly rate of $40 was approved. Rental of classroom to Intermediate Unit #1 was appoved, as was an agreement with Centerville Clinics to provide student assistance and school-based counseling services for the 2012-13 school year at no cost to the district.

Bellmar Middle School 8th Graders Earn Top Score at Englishfest One team of students from Bellmar Middle School recently brought honor to their school at the Englishfest competition held at Duquesne University on May 17, 2012. The team members were Joe Carter, Jessica Moody, Miranda Filak, Shailyn Evans, and Tommy Beeler, all 8th graders.

They were coached by Bellmar teachers Deborah Alekson, Jamie Arnold, and Carol Aten Frow Pictured are Miranda Filak, Tommy Beeler, Joe Carter, along with retired educator Mary and Jessica Moody. Missing is Shailyn Evans Krett.

The Englishfest competition is sponsored by the Western PA Council of Teachers of English. Schools form teams of 3 – 5 members; these members independently read 6 challenging books in advance and prepare for the day’s events which include trivia, an acting game called “Talk Show,” and “Insights,” which involves students responding to a prompt about the books read.

At the event, students also participate in a round of Super Trivia where they are timed to answer a series of questions on the books. All events earn points for their teams. The Bellmar team took 1st place in all events that day and in the overall scoring placed 4th amongst 200 teams! Bellmar’s teams have represented their school well over the many years of participation in the competition, but no team has scored as high as this one. They have brought much honor and recognition to their school!

BVA to Provide Literacy Handbooks to Newborns in Community The Belle Vernon Area School District realizes the importance of literacy in every child's life. In an effort to give all children in BVA a better chance at becoming good readers, the district is giving a literacy handbook to all newborn children in the Belle Vernon community.

This handbook was created by the Consortium for Public Education and includes literacy activities for children birth through age 8.

Belle Vernon Area School District has approached community businesses and asked for their support in this endeavor. Businesses can contact the district to participate. Valley 1st Community Federal Credit Union recently made a donation for the purchase of five books to be given to families expecting children in the BVA community.

Many children will benefit from the cooperation of the BVA School District and area businesses.

Ringgold Commencement Ceremony 250 Seniors Receive Diplomas in Joe Montana Stadium

The 250 members of the 2012 Ringgold High School graduating class received their diplomas at the commencement ceremony on Friday evening June 8. The ceremony took place in Joe Montana Stadium, which was packed with relatives and friends of the graduating seniors. The stands and the school parking lot were both full. Overflow parking along the highway leading to the school driveway was packed as well.

The entrance procession was led by Substitute Superintendent Dr. Karen Polkabla, her administration, teachers, the school board members and special guests. They were followed by Principal Dwayne Homa leading the graduating seniors. The National Anthem was sung by a choral group made up of seniors Amanda Bickel, Tatum Brewer, Caitlin Crall, Veronica McConville, Olivia Meyer and Olivia Rusin. The Ringgold Alma Mater was sung by Emily Grove, Jared Hancock, Emily Harger, Eli Macugoski, Harley Mendola and Shannon Robison.

by Principal Dwayne Homa who introduced the Honorable James B. Renacci, Member of the US Congress from Ohio and a 1976 Ringgold graduate, who gave an inspiring keynote address.

The thoughts of the graduating class were well-expressed by Co-Valedictorians Garrett Devenney (president of the senior class), Shannon Robison (vice-president of the senior class) and student speakers Emily Eikey and Nicolas Greaves.

The class was presented to the School Board by Principal Homa. School Board Vice President Mariann Bulko announced the “acceptance of this senior class of 2012 as being qualified and accepted for graduation.” This was followed by the presentation of diplomas. Congratulations from the “Messengers” to all graduating seniors.

Ringgold Middle School students wrapped up their annual school-wide science fair competition on May 21.

Middle school teachers judged the projects and selected the top five from each grade level. Those top 15 students progressed to the finals. The final judges, professionals from the Ringgold community, volunteered their time to visit the school and listen to the science fair finalists’ oral presentations detailing their projects. This year, judges selected a “Judge’s Choice” from each grade level as well as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place overall winners.

Grade level winners were: Shelby Abel (6th), Grant Gerard (7th), and Hannah McGee (8th). Overall schoolwide winners were: 1st place-Hannah McGee, 2nd place-Shelby Abel, and 3rd place-Christian Egan, Anna Freeman, and Erica Glaneman.

Students in every grade at RMS learn throughout the school year how to apply the steps of the scientific method to scientific problems and completed a project using this method. Each project is displayed in the school’s main hallway. As a school-wide event, it takes many people to make this event run smoothly. Thanks go to Vice Principal Lennie Nedley and PTA parents: Science Fair Chair Chrisann Majernik, Christina Parsons, Luann Hyslop, and Joni Martino, as well as judges for the finals: former teacher Cathy Smith, former teacher Camilla Ferrara and architect John Stitch.

Awards were provided by the great generosity of many community businesses. The PTA would like to acknowledge Valley Skating of Donora, Rostraver Ice Garden, Mon Valley YMCA, Vocelli’s Pizza of Finleyville,

Ringgold School Board New Majority Settles for Renovations

At a special meeting held on June 13, the new Ringgold School Board majority voted to begin renovations on its old empty buildings in Donora and Monongahela, the high school and Ringgold Elementary North (Gastonville).

For months, district residents and board members Bill Stein and Chris Carroll pleaded with the new school board majority to continue to use the existing Finley Middle School until a sufficient capital reserve was in place and state funds were available to build a new centrally located middle school.

Instead, the board’s new majority, who promised in their election campaigns to reopen Donora and Monongahela schools, voted 6/1 (two members absent) this evening to begin extensive renovations to the aged buildings in Donora and Monongahela (81 and 87 years).

An extensive list of renovations for each of the old buildings was presented.

It includes new roofs on both buildings, new HVAC systems, asbestos and mold abatement, replacement of exterior windows and doors, new plumbing, new electrical distribution, new data services, new tiling and carpeting, gym floor repairs, considerable interior and exterior structural repairs and modifications to make the buildings ADA-compliant.

The Board failed to present line-item costs for these renovations. They stated that all renovations were expected to cost approximately $23 million, including work on the existing high school and the addition of six new classrooms, new restrooms and a new HVAC system to the Ringgold Elementary North building (Gastonville).

Some of the board members and many taxpayers in the district fear that once renovation is underway the costs will balloon far beyond the projected $23 million and that the district will be unable to afford some of the promised renovations. Meeting comments indicated that the board/administration has no intention at this point to seek state reimbursement for this renovation work, so they will operate outside of the State’s PLANCON system, which

provides a structured plan for major construction work. At any rate, this work will certainly impact the district’s capital reserves, possibly cause a tax increase and increase its debt service, killing any chance of a new centrally located middle school for at least a decade. Board member Bill Stein asked that the vote be postponed until lineitem costs could be studied and overall costs compared to those for a new building. His request was denied, and the motion to begin renovations was passed.

The increased operating cost due to the operation of the two buildings instead of one (Finley Middle School) during the 2013-2014 school year and beyond was estimated to be $348,060 annually, including added transportation and personnel costs. This amounts to more than $5.2 million over the expected 15-year life span of the renovated buildings.

Dr. Polkabla presented a Building Use Reconfiguration Plan, which is summarized below.

Teacher and coach Joe Ravasio gave an impassioned address citing, “The only reason that any of us are here is to serve the kids.”

Home & Garden Facts To Help You Fix Your Deck (NAPS)— It may be easier than you think to do a little fix-up work around the house, especially on that great getaway place - the deck. Decks need TLC, too - particularly if those boards are exposed and regularly face wind, rain and heat. Construction expert Joe Sainz has a few tips for homeowners who want to do their own deck maintenance correctly and safely using a single tool.

Smart Deck Repair Even the best-protected deck boards are susceptible to twisting, rotting or cupping. And usually it’s that board in the middle of a 30-foot run that’s the issue. A pry bar or a claw hammer can be used to remove the compromised piece, but it’s easy to injure boards

around it. The smart option is to do some strategic cutting.

A multi-tool, such as the Bosch MultiX and its many cutting blades, is well suited for this job. Start by using the tool with a wood-cutting blade to remove a board section between the joists to allow access, then make a quick change to a metal-cutting blade and get between the remaining boards to cut the nail.

Once the board is removed, measure the opening, cut a new piece of treated lumber and attach with a galvanized fastener. Be sure to allow for an 1⁄8-inch expansion. Now that’s a repair that saves both time and money. And this process can be used on handrails, as well.

They Buzz and They Sting: Tips to Keep Stinging Insects at Bay (NewsUSA) - It just wouldn't be summer without the buzz of summer insects. However, in addition to being a nuisance and invading outdoor activities, these summer bummers can cause severe allergic reactions. Stinging insects are especially active during the second half of summer, when the colonies forage for food that will sustain their queens during the winter.

"Stinging insects pose a major health concern for families around the country, and summer to late fall are the months when people are at the greatest risk," says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for NPMA. "It is important to take certain precautions to ensure that you can avoid painful stings and a possible allergic reaction."

Since stinging insects emerged from their hideouts earlier than expected this year, now is the time to start preventing trouble. Here's what the experts at NPMA suggest: • Always wear shoes when outdoors, especially in grassy areas.

• Do not swat at stinging insects.

• Keep windows and doors screened.

• Keep garbage in sealed receptacles.

• Do not leave sweet drinks or meats in accessible areas. Keep food covered in outdoor areas, and be sure to remove food and trash after picnics and outdoor events.

• Thoroughly rinse soda cans and other containers before placing them in recycling or garbage receptacles.

• Overseed grassy areas to get better coverage, as this will deter ground-nesting insects.

• If stung and experiencing signs of illness, seek immediate medical attention as allergic reactions can be severe.

• If at risk of an attack by a colony of stinging insects, run as fast as possible, and seek shelter inside a car or a house.

• Call a pest professional if you find a nest on your property or suspect an infestation, as the removal of any stinging insect nest can be dangerous.

Mary, Mother of the Church Announces Return of Festival of Nations It's that time of the year again – get ready for the 2nd Annual Mary, Mother of the Church "Festival of Nations" festival. The festival will be held on Saturday, August 11 in the alley behind the church and inside the church social hall located between 6th and 7th Streets in Charleroi.

Festival hours will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by a DJ all afternoon and the area's favorite oldies band, "Back In Time," will play all your favorites from the ‘50s and early ‘60s from 5 to 8 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and dancing shoes to truly enjoy this great band.

Once again we will have homemade foods from around the world including Slovak, Italian, Irish and American. There will also be a gyros booth, chicken booth, and new this year, funnel cakes. We’re hosting the biggest bake sale you will ever see on either side of the Monongahela River.

Our world-famous, multi-thousand dollar gift baskets will be raffled off.

A former resident of Monongahela, Barbara Mountain Ackman, born June 18, 1929, died Friday May 25, 2012. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth Cadman Mountain and Melvin Mountain, Sr., and a great granddaughter, Kristy Nath.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years this August, Richard E. Ackman, two daughters, Terri and husband Leon Nath, of New Eagle, and Patricia Vukich of Glendale, AZ, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and two step-great grandchildren. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ. After moving to AZ in 1973, she began working on the MaricopaPima Indian Reservation. She started a second-hand store called Helping Hands and built Friendship Park. She also published a book about her work and blessings with the Pima Indians.
