High-Yielding Fundraiser Held for Carroll Township And Monongahela Police

Thanks to the diligent efforts of the Monongahela Woman’s Club, police officers in both Carroll Twp. and Monongahela will be safer and more effective.

The Club embarked on three fundraising projects—a Theme Party, sales of Sheetz gas station coupon books, and making/selling jars of jelly. The three undertakings produced an impressive total amount of $3,600 for a donation to the local police, which will be split at $1,800 Carroll Township police and Monongahela City police receive checks from a fundraiser. each.

Monessen Raises the Titanic, Recreates Experience for Fundraiser

APPLICATIONS DUE FOR 14TH ANNUAL FLEATIQUE ON THE MON

The event had been sold-out for over three weeks, but the phones kept ringing up until the day of the affair. On Saturday, April 14, 2012, a capacity crowd gathered at Jozwiak Hall in the St. Vincent DePaul Society building on Grand Blvd. in Monessen to remember the 6 Monessen travelers and the 7 Coal Center, PA travelers who were on the R.M.S. Titanic. The event was sponsored by the Greater Monessen Historical Lucille Dalfonso, Monessen City Council, Daniel Zyglowicz, President of the Greater Monessen Historical Society and catered by Two Fine Society and Monessen Mayor, Mary Jo Smith.

The Historical Society recreated the last dinner served to the First Class travelers 100 years ago that very night.

The menu consisted of hors d’oeuvres, fresh fruit, celery, beef barley soup, chicken, beef, roast red potatoes, corn, peas, salad, rolls, Punch Romaine, and cake.

Daniel Zyglowicz, president of the Historical Society, sat at the Captain’s table that was decorated with the flag of the White Star Shipping Line and the Union Jack. He welcomed the crowd and spoke of the political situation in the world of 1912. He also thanked the crowd for their continuing support of the Greater Monessen Historical Society.

Following dinner, John Sawa, a retired educator and local Titanic expert, displayed a portion of his extensive Titanic collection and spoke on the history of the White Star Line and the Titanic. He covered the local people who were traveling on the ship. A question and answer session followed, after which guests were invited to touch pieces of the authentic metal hull of the ship, as well as pieces of the coal that had been carried to fire the massive boilers.

The Historical Society operated a gift shop filled with Titanic or Monessen-related items. Each guest received a small book of Titanic postcards, as a souvenir.

Background music during the evening consisted of authentic tunes known to have been played on the Titanic the night she sank. Many guests dressed in period-costume attire for the affair.

Artisans, crafters, flea market, antique dealers and food vendors are needed for the 14th annual “Fleatique on the Mon." This fabulous event will be held in Chess Park, and throughout Monongahela and New Eagle on Saturday, June 2, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Crafter and antique dealers will be featured in Chess Park, while flea market vendors and information booths will be located on Third Street, beside PNC Bank. Food vendors are needed at both locations.

Application deadline is May 25. Booth spaces for antique, craft and flea market vendors are 15" for $25. Food vendor spaces are 20" and include electricity for $40. This unique event is known as the largest street sale in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Running along a three-mile stretch of Main Street, also Route 88, 837 and 136, in Monongahela and New Eagle, businesses, churches, and homeowners participate with yard sales, bazaars, rummage sales and garage sales. Free parking and free admission.

Rostraver Twp. Historical Society Schedules May Speaker The Rostraver Twp. Historical Society monthly meeting will be held on May 10 at the Old Fells Methodist Church, 800 Fellsburg Rd. The business meeting will begin at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., Willy Frankfurt of Finleyville, a professional speaker and early American re-enactor, will demonstrate the art of horns and scrimshaw and other subjects.

On Wednesday, May 23, the Baldwin Elementary School students will go on a field trip and visit the historic Old Fells Methodist Church, restored Concord School, Colonel Edward Cook House, and the Darr Mine Disaster Site under the leadership of Mrs. Dawn Yoder.

On April 12, Edward Valvo of Greenock, a re-enactor, accompanied the 200 year anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition to find a route over the Western Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. Mr. Valvo gave a very interesting account of the trials and events the expedition encountered on their journey.

Spring Has Arrived at Mingo Park Fishin’, Hikin’, Bikin’, Ridin and Picnickin’

Those who haven’t been to Washington County’s Mingo Creek Park this year are in for a big surprise. One of the problems with this beautiful county park has been the coexistence of walkers, bikers and cars on the narrow road running through the park that is Mingo Creek Valley. The county has solved that Ed and Emily Mollard of Bentleyville each problem by creating a separate biking caught their limit under the Ebeneezer Bridge. and walking path through the park that’s asphalt for a long stretch and gravel in other parts of the park. The asphalt pathways are about 10 feet wide in most places and are great for both walkers and bikers. Motorists will have to surrender the right-of-way to bikers and walkers at the several intersections where the new trail crosses the old road. These crossings are well marked for motorists.

Several new bridges have been built across the creek so visitors have access Eric and Craig Gray caught these to both sides. A new playground is in beauties under the Henry Bridge. place, and some weirs have been constructed in the creek bed creating riffles and pools for better fish habitat. The horse riding trails (15 miles) are in operation, with horse trailer parking available at the trailhead near the creek.

It’s nice to see that Washington County has been able to funnel some money back into its recreational facilities.

The first big influx of visitors to Mingo Park usually coincides with opening day of trout season – April 14 this year. Mingo Park is popular for kids fishing, as the creek is easily accessible from the roads and pathways.

As in any other year, the hot spots were in the deeper pools under the Henry and Ebeneezer covered bridges.

The rain held off until late afternoon, so opening day was great. Lots of dogs were in attendance with their owners; in most parts of the park, leashes are required for the safety of both pets and owners but there is a free running area for dogs. The park office can provide information about the park’s layout—there’s a lot to do there. Of course it’s a hotspot for the Covered Bridge Festival in the fall, it has a small observatory for star gazers and it’s home to Ringgold School District’s long distance runners. Stop by this spring and summer – you won’t be disappointed.

Security Officer to Speak at Pricedale Union Church First-Hand Account of Pittsburgh’s Western Psychiatric Clinic Shooting On Saturday, May 26, at 9 a.m., Pricedale Union Church, 203 Johnson Ave. in Belle Vernon, will have the final session of their Men’s Fellowship breakfast for the year. Featured will be Elder Guy Johnson as the guest speaker. Johnson is employed by the University of Pittsburgh as a security guard and has acted as a personal body guard to Pitt basketball coach Jamie Dixon.

Recently, Officer Johnson was cited for his amazing involvement at Pittsburgh’s Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic when John Shick went on a shooting spree which killed one Western Psych employee and seriously wounded five others.

During the melee, Johnson was also hit by a ricocheting round in the chest, but was protected by his flak jacket. Johnson will relate his involvement on that fatal day and show how he believes God used him in the process.

Donora Historical Society Thanks Greater Monongahela Are Community Band The Donora Historical Society would like to thank the Greater Monongahela Area Community Band and conductor Mr. Richard Pantaleo for their donation from some of the proceeds of the concert that was held in Finleyville in March.

The donation will be used to help fund some of our ongoing projects.

The historical presentation that was held for our April meeting featured two websites that we navigated on the big screen. The first website was created by a student from Concordia University in Shanghai, China who was doing research on the 1948 Smog. The second website was our own - the much anticipated Donora Historical Society website that we developed in-house. Look for more information on the festivities of the upcoming dedication ceremony of the Donora-Monessen Bridge that will be renamed after Donora native and professional baseball player Stan “The Man” Musial. The dedication is taking place on Friday, May 4 at 2 p.m. at the War Memorial site that sits close to the bridge. Following the ceremony, a reception will be held at the Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum where we will have a Stan Musial display that will be the centerpiece of the reception, as well as light refreshments.

As a follow-up to the bridge rededication, our May 7 historical presentation at 7 p.m. will feature Stan “The Man” Musial, by Steve Russell of Belle Vernon.

Our final presentation before our summer hiatus will be on the St. Dominic’s Church keepsake booklet by author Ruth Yatsko. Ms. Yatsko will be on hand on June 4 at 7 p.m. to discuss the rich history of the church as well as the very beautiful pictures of the architectural details of the windows and building. The price of the booklet is $15. Due to the expected overflow crowd, the meeting is expected to take place in the newly remodeled meeting room at the Donora Public Library instead of our customary site – the Smog Museum.

Local Free Masons Help to Keep Route 88 Clean

Charleroi Area Historical Society, Inc. Hosts Civil War Expert Vice President Lois Hawe conducted the meeting in April by making mention of the Society President, Beth Perret, and wishing her the best in her recent surgery, and then leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Larry Cowell pointed out that anyone wishing to purchase the DVD remakes can obtain them at the John K. Tener Library.

It was also stated that there would be a special tour slated for the 24th, and that starting on Monday, the 30th, between 11a.m. to 1 p.m., docents would be available for general seasonal tours for the public through November 1st, with more information being released later.

Hawe then introduced the speaker for the evening: Stewart Boyd, who has dedicated himself to being immersed in Civil War history, activities, and pursuits. He spoke on "James Allison: Regular Man of the Civil War." Boyd pointed out the various battles and how Allison had been involved in the 140th of the PA Infantry, made side notes about the Ringgold Calvary, that the most important aspect of the men serving was "preserving the union" and not so much freeing slaves as slavery had already been out-lawed in the northern states. Further, Boyd described in much detail what kind of environment and degraded conditions that the farm boy soldiers had to live in, endure in, and how they suffered to survive. Boyd took time to answer some questions afterward, and then the members had their social hour with Leota Voelker and LaVerne Williams assisting as hostesses for the evening.

Recognizing the Oldest Member of the CAHS, Inc. In the active membership of the Charleroi Area Historical Society, Inc. is someone who has long kept a helpful hand in providing refreshment, information, humor and historical confirmation via memory, documents and pictures over the years. At the recent April meeting, Belle Brutout, whose father had strong ties to the Monongahela River boat “family” and who has had strong, deep ties to Charleroi community, was recognized at 98 years of age.

Living Donor Can Save Life of Local Man Many of you know Larry Fagan as being a generous man, a good friend, involved with church/religious groups, or riding a Harley Davidson; through schools, businesses, and golf; or just by meeting him on the street. Fagan’s zest for life and enjoyment of life is over the top. However, Larry now needs your help and prayers.

Larry was diagnosed with Hepatitis C with cirrhosis of the liver many years ago.

He was able to live a healthy, full life, but recently he has taken a turn for the worse and he is in liver failure and now needs a liver.

Recently, Larry was seen at UPMC and the Cleveland Clinic and has been approved to be placed on the liver transplant list at both facilities. We are hoping and praying for a healthy liver, but this could take some time and as time passes his health diminishes. However, there is another option. Physicians believe the best option would be for Larry to receive a liver from a liver donor. This is called a living liver donor transplant, in which a healthy person can donate a portion of their liver. The donor liver will grow or regenerate after the donation within 6 – 8 weeks after the surgery to close to its original size.

The donor must be O blood type (+/- is not a factor) between ages 18 – 55 and optimally of similar size or larger (Larry is 5’8” tall and usually around 180 lbs.).

MACC Hosts “Dancing With Our Stars” Fundraiser for Fireworks Display The Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Arthur Murray Dance Studio, is pleased to announce that it will be hosting its gala dinner and dance competition fundraiser "Dancing With Our Stars."

This event is styled after the ABC hit TV show and will provide guests with a wonderful evening of entertainment and dancing. Ten couples will compete for the coveted mirror ball trophy. Votes in the form of funds donated will determine the People's Choice Award winner; these votes will be accepted prior to the event on the Chamber's website.

This dinner and dance competition gala will be held on Saturday, June 9 at the New Eagle VFD Social Hall, which is located at 156 Chess St. in New Eagle. The evening begins with dinner at 6 p.m. and the dance portion of the evening begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the event are $35 and include dinner with a complementary glass of wine. There will also be a cash bar and a hosted cash wine bar by Ripepi Winery.

12th Annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Mon Valley Is May 4 The American Cancer Society is pleased to announce the 2012 Relay For Life of Mon Valley is scheduled for Friday, May 4. The event will take place from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. at the brand new Charleroi High School Stadium. This year, the event will bring together all the communities of the Mon Valley along with numerous local high schools.

The American Cancer Society and its Relay For Life volunteers are asking for all area residents to support this wonderful event. This year we have over 60 teams and 600 participants registered for the event. The school districts of Belle Vernon, Charleroi, Elizabeth Forward and Ringgold will all be well represented at the event. The event will start with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. followed by lots of fun games, activities, food and fun. The Survivor Ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. and the Luminaria Ceremony will take place at 8:30 p.m. All survivors are encouraged to come to the event for the 6 p.m. ceremony. On March 17, an evening of comedy, mystery, dinner and dancing took place at the New Eagle Volunteer Fire Department Social Hall. The New Eagle VFD Ladies Auxiliary sponsored the show “Robin Hood Ain’t Lookin’ So Good,” conducted by Mystery’s Most Wanted. The mystery dinner theater began at 6 p.m., and then a night of dancing and music topped off the night.

Greater Monessen Historical Society Receives $5,000 Grant The Greater Monessen Historical Society was one of 60 organizations that received a Westmoreland County Tourism Grant for 2012 through the Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau. Daniel Zyglowicz, president, and Vito Beneccio, treasurer, represented GMHS at a ceremony at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg and received a $5,000 check from the County Commissioners. The Monessen Heritage Museum will use the money for brochures, booklets and website maintenance and upgrades.

As part of the ongoing Mon Valley Jewish Exhibit at the museum, there will be a Seder service and demonstration on Sunday, May 20. The various prayers of Passover will be recited and explained, along with the meaning of the food dishes that are prepared for the holiday. A video showcasing the Jewish Classroom in the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh will also be shown. It will portray the history of the process of building the classroom and how it was done.

The Mon Valley Jewish Exhibit is available for viewing Wednesday - Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and continue until mid-June. The summer exhibit, which will open in July, will feature photos of Colonel James M. Schoonmaker and photos and items related to the American Civil War. Open House Scheduled to Showcase Renovated Monessen Public Library Just in time for its 76th anniversary, Monessen Public Library and Cultural Center will celebrate with an Open House at 326 Donner Ave. on Sunday, May 6 from 2 – 6 p.m. The public will be able to receive tours of the totally renovated facility. Following a $1.5 million renovation by the City of Monessen, the building will be the keystone of its new cultural district. The library and cultural center features a new elevator in the lobby area, handicapped accessible restrooms, a fireplace, study areas, and a total new look.

Janet Imbrescia, vice president of the Library Board of Directors, will bury a new time capsule on the library grounds. The public and city groups and organizations are asked to contribute articles, photos and small items for the capsule. Regular season begins in September and runs through March. You have the option to attend all or none of the meets. The regular swim meets provide for competition with a swimmer’s age group and gender.

C. Harper Brings 250 Mile Marathon in the Sky to Rostraver

Bentleyville Recreation Holds Annual Easter Egg Hunt

On May 19, the C. Harper Auto Dealership, located in Belle Vernon, PA, will sponsor and host the 250 mile pigeon races of the Greater Western Combine and the No Boundary Combine of Eastern Shore Lofts. The homing pigeon clubs competing include – Bristol, PA; Lennox Park in Chester, PA; Newark, Delaware; Greater Philadelphia, and South Jersey Club, in New Jersey.

C. Harper Auto Dealership will provide cash awards for winning lofts. Attendees and patrons can enter a contest and win free gasoline. The free gasoline will be awarded to the person that comes closest to predicting the flying time (hours, minutes, and seconds) of Greater Western Combine’s winning bird.

Current plans for the C. Harper event include local pigeoneers displaying thoroughbred birds and providing American Racing Pigeon and International Federation of Homing Pigeon Fanciers informational brochures. At 9 a.m. birds from local pigeon lofts will be released. At 9:20, a welcome and introduction into the wonders and excitement of a pigeon race will be presented. At 9:30, the 800 birds of the Greater Western Combine will be released. At 10 a.m., race birds from the No Boundary Combine will be released.

A large crowd of children and parents gathered at Richardson Park in Bentleyville on March 31, 2012 at 1 p.m. for the Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Bentleyville Recreation Board, who sponsors this event, raises funds all year to hold holiday events in the Borough. Over 3,000 plastic eggs stuffed with prizes were scattered over the park. Easter Bonnet and Top Hat contests, free train rides all afternoon, and the appearance of the Easter Bunny himself made for a happy event for all!

The Western PA Conservancy will host its annual river sojourn on Saturday, June 9, with a canoe trip along the northern Youghiogheny River. The one-day float will include activities and presentations centered on the theme “Rock the Yough,” focusing on the geology, ecology and history of this section of the river. Participants will start at the Yough River Park in Connellsville and travel 14 miles to Hazelbaker’s Bottom Yough Outfitters, Inc. in Layton. The cost is $65/person, which includes meals, canoe rental, shuttle service, a t-shirt and educational programs.

Parking Problem Gets Action by Monongahela City Council Speers Continues Spring Clean-Up

On Wednesday, April 14, Speers Borough had its 4th council meeting of the year. Speers continues its efforts to clean up the town by posting new street signs, some of them warning of fines for dumping. Said Councilman Daylong, “Trash is not being picked up without reminder calls.”

The issue was addressed further by council President Roger Grady.

One property located at 159 State St. is both an eyesore and does not meet Borough construction codes. The renovation of the house was stopped due to its caving in and now bids are being taken for tearing the property down. As for other clean-up, the Borough Building itself is being cleaned, the park is now gated and locked at night, new stop signs were added, potholes were filled and a tree in an unwanted location was cut down, along with other general repairs. Joseph Nursery’s donated 20 dogwood trees for spring planting for the Borough.

Projects that will hopefully start soon are the tearing down of a deck at 15 Hillcrest and taking care of a garage that is caving in at 28 Grandview way. Also discussed was the fence at Speers and

Rebecca. “The fence is on the street’s right-of-way,” said Kerry Krider, Code Enforcement officer. There was some debate as to whether the fence is really a safety hazard. Krider said, “Just getting it down a foot or two would do it.”

Krider believes the owner would be very cooperative.

As for the combined sewer project, the water authority still needs to give permission to Art Brewer of Fayette Engineering to gather data necessary to give their estimate on the project.

In financial news, the Borough is planning to change deposit accounts from Citizens Bank to PNC, mainly due to Citizens adding more fees to the current account. They will be sending out a proposal to PNC to see if some of the fees could be eliminated by using PNC for their deposit account.

The Regional Police Force began its operations on April 4, though Speers says they haven’t seen many changes.

“Some paperwork still needs done on patrol car insurance issues,” said Mayor Lee. “We just have to be vigilent, especially about the Speers and Mapleview Industrial Parks being under construction. He added that people are still going there when they need to stay away.

A resident of Park Ave. asked the Monongahela City Council at its April 11, 2012 meeting to do something about the nuisance property across the street from his home. The house has been abandoned and broken into. The yard is now overrun by rodents, tall grass, and weeds. A wall is in danger of collapsing onto the street.

Mayor Kepics, Code Enforcement Officer Pemberton, and Solicitor Bassi explained the property has changed owners several times, and building code violation citations have been issued to no avail because the current absentee owners are located in California and Hong Kong. Solicitor Bassi will pursue renewed efforts to take legal action against the owners.

The same resident also inquired about what could be done when a neighbor’s dog barks all night. Police Chief Brian Tempest advised him to call 911, who will dispatch the Animal Control Officer.

A resident of N. Alexander St. presented photos to explain her complaint about parking issues at a nearby Lifesteps group home at the corner of 6th Street and Lincoln. She described how a van used to load/unload residents is often parked on the street at a location which blocks the view of vehicles entering the intersection, resulting in several near-miss accidents.

Furthermore, an employee of the home parks a black truck in a similar view-

obstructing place, which creates a hazard. Meanwhile, a driveway on the property--which has capacity to park five or six cars--is not used.

Chief Tempest responded that they have had conversations with the owners, who made unfulfilled promises to remedy the situation. Therefore, the street dept. will be instructed to install NO PARKING signs, and paint the curbs yellow where needed.

PARep. Pete Daley presented a citation to Chief Tempest in tribute to his father, who passed in February of this year. The Honorable Clyde G. Tempest, an Army veteran, served the community as a District Judge, a Court of Common Pleas Judge, and Solicitor for Monongahela City.

Tony Bottino addressed Council as a representative of the Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce to praise the successful past partnership of the two entities, and pledge the Chamber’s continued interest in working together to develop a business plan to make Monongahela a destination place for recreation and business expansion. He proposed organizing a separate working group to accomplish these objectives, for which Mayor Kepics volunteered.

The Redevelopment Authority of the County of Washington is providing partial funding to re-pave the parking lot at the municipal building on Main Street, but needs additional funding from the City to do so. Council approved the expenditure of a not-to-exceed amount of $10K for that purpose.

Donora Council Advocates For School in Donora

At the April 12 meeting of the Donora Borough Council, Council Vice President Jason Menendez and Council member Marie Trozzo encouraged Donora residents to attend all Ringgold School Board meetings to urge the Board to reopen the Donora Elementary Center building.

Councilwoman Trozzo remarked, “The building will stand for another 50 years, so let’s make use of it.” Attend the meetings and “be vocal.” Vice President Menendez expressed his passion for reopening the building for use in some capacity, perhaps housing middle school students, as has been suggested. Menendez explained that having an open school in Donora is important to the families as well as to the redeveloping of the city.

Another issue of concern discussed at the meeting related to the recycling program. Currently, a maximum of 12 percent of residents are recycling.

According to Councilman Donald Pavelko, if 75 percent of Donora residents recycled, a reduction in garbage collection rates could be possible when the city renegotiates their contract with Fayette Waste at the end of the year.

Councilman Pavelko urges residents to please recycle. Recyclables now include cans, bottles, plastic, newspapers, and most common recyclable materials.

Residents are asked to place recyclables at the curb with trash every other collection day.

Council also heard from Donora resident Mike Faryna, who complained of his Marelda Ave. neighbor’s abundance of cats. The owner’s 22 cats are leaving waste on Mr. Faryna’s porch and have recently damaged his motorcycle’s seat, cover, and tank. In addition, Mr.

Faryna’s wife has a severe cat allergy and reacts strongly when sitting on her own porch.

Council discussed the frustration with outdoor cats in Donora, saying it is a problem in many communities that is difficult to solve. Currently, Donora residents can contact Code Enforcement to obtain a trap. After a cat is trapped and held for 3 days, the cat will be released to the Animal Control Officer.

A better solution would be to adopt strict ordinances on cats and dogs, according to Mayor Lignelli, who cited McKeesport’s ordinances as an example.

Council agreed, but noted how difficult it is to enforce code violations on cats since they are not required to be licensed as dogs are.

In other business: • Donora residents are reminded that the city’s composting facility near the Lignelli Pavilion in Palmer Park has been closed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) pending the construction of a new facility.

No one is permitted to deposit composting materials at the site or elsewhere in Donora without prior permission, or fines will be imposed.

• Councilman Thomas Kostolansky commended Council and Tim Durka from the Public Works Dept. for their swift and proper management of a resident’s concerns from last month’s meeting. Donora resident Mike Andresky addressed Council at the March meeting concerning possible condemnation of two properties on McKean Ave. Mr. Durka explained that prior to the March meeting, paperwork had already been filed in relation to condemning these properties. Council reminded residents that solutions to such problems do take time and that the process must be followed legally.

PA State Rep. Candidate Levdansky Attends Carroll Twp. Meeting

Former PA State Representative Dave Levdansky was in attendance at the April 3 Carroll Twp. Board of Supervisors meeting. Mr. Levdansky (D) was the representative for the 39th district, which includes parts of Carroll Twp., from 1985-2010 when he lost to current representative Rick Saccone (R). After the meeting, Mr. Levdansky addressed the Board and those in attendance, asking for any input on issues of concern to residents.

The Board and Mr. Levdansky discussed issues related to possible re-districting, the new wage tax collection procedure (with one single collection agency), as well as zoning issues.

Carroll Twp. Solicitor Herman Bigi remarked on his frustration over the state taking many powers of zoning from local municipalities, especially in light of the current energy expansion occurring in our state. At a time when zoning issues are critically important to Carroll Twp. (and other communities), the power of these communities to con-

trol what occurs and where is being limited. Mr. Levdansky agreed and believes that the large energy companies entering our state are controlling the hand of some political powers.

In other business: The Board opened four sealed bids for the 2012 Carroll Twp. paving project.

The project was awarded to Victor Paving for the lowest bid of $111,113.50. The project is expected to occur this spring or summer and will include Wisebecker Lane, Center St., and Gearing Road (from tunnel to bottom of hill). The project is in addition to yearly paving maintenance projects.

The Board voted to change township banking from Citizens Bank to PNC. As Secretary Sharon Cramer explained, Citizens Bank is changing many of their account benefits for townships/communities. The accounts would no longer be interest bearing, and fees are increasing. PNC has offered no fees, free checking, and interest-bearing accounts.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 6 p.m.

Monessen Announces Remodeled Library to Open

It was announced at the April 18, 2012 Monessen City Council meeting that the greatly anticipated grand opening of the Monessen Public Library will take place on Sunday, May 6, 2012. Also opening that day will be the newly developed Public Safety Building. Both buildings are on Donner Ave. The day’s events will kick off at 1:30 p.m. with a dedication ceremony to honor the late Reverend Vernon W. Mcdormand, former pastor of the First Christian Church located at 6th & Schoonmaker and father of Academy Award-winning actress Frances McDormand. They will also be honoring the late Alpheus Shuster who served as Monessen's Burgess from 1901 to 1905 and helped form the Monessen Bank & Trust Co. Both men will be honored with commemorative plaques located between Donner Ave. and Schoonmaker Ave. on 5th St. and 6th St. At 2:30 p.m. the Public Safety building will honor Mike J. Skirpan, who donated funds for equipment; Walter Kwolek, Jr., who donated funds for the building; and Ralph J. Guzzo, who donated 2 AEDs. The library will be offering tours of their new location and hold an art exhibit. At 5:30 p.m. the library will be burying a time capsule

with items representing Monessen in 2012 that will remain sealed for 20 years. Also throughout the day the Public Safety Building will be celebrating with various DJs providing music, food and refreshments, and a children's corner with face painters and a balloon artist from Douglas Education Center.

Festivities will continue throughout the day at both the Public Library and the Public Safety Building until 7 p.m.

In other municipal news, Monessen, like many other areas in the region, is suffering from an overabundance of road salt. Contracts state that the city must purchase a certain specified amount during the year but with the mild winter most of that mandatorily purchased salt was unneeded.

Alumisource in Monessen has agreed to store the excess for the city so that it can be kept properly and may be used next year.

A motion was approved to hire Deborah Gregor for a clerical position in the Treasurer’s Office. Ms. Gregor was in attendance at the Council meeting and received congratulations from Mayor Mary Jo Smith on her new position.

Mayor Smith proclaimed May as “Protect Our Children from Tobacco Smoke Pollution Month” at the request of the Monessen Tobacco Free Coalition.

Egg-Throwing Discussed at New Eagle Board Meeting

At the April 3 New Eagle Borough Board Meeting, eggs were discussed by Monongahela Chief of Police Brian Tempest. It wasn’t in preparation for Easter, though.

Chief Tempest explained that on March 31 at 2:30 a.m., an officer in a patrol car noticed a vehicle’s passenger throwing eggs near Chess St. in New Eagle. The three juveniles in the vehicle were cited for criminal mischief and the driver for violating junior license curfew. Some residents have complained of damage from eggs being thrown at their residences.

Residents are asked to report any incidents to the local police.

Chief Tempest also noted an incident from April 2 with a local man cited for public drunkenness at Chess Park. The citation followed an incident earlier in the day where the many was seen walking toward Carroll Twp. holding a dead raccoon and yelling at motorists for killing it. He was asked to go home but was later discovered at Chess Park in a drunken state.

In other business: Council voted to begin looking for a new or used pickup truck to replace the current one (a 1995 Chevy S10) that has been in need of repair frequently.

Council accepted a single bid for a paving project from Hanson Aggregates of Connellsville, PA. The bid amounts were $59.50/ton and $53.50/ton for blacktop and blacktop with binder, respectively.

Council accepted Public Works Equipment Operator John Grossi’s resignation. In a resignation letter, Mr. Grossi thanked everyone as he leaves to further his career. Council will be advertising for the position replacement.

Two PA State Representative candidates for the 39th District, which includes New Eagle, attended the meeting and were present to speak with residents following the meeting. Rob Rhoderick (D), owner and operator of Rhoderick Chiropractic Clinic and Dave Levdansky (D), former State Representative 1985-2010, introduced themselves to those in attendance and discussed any questions/concerns related to the community. The 39th District State Representative is currently Rick Saccone (R). The district includes New Eagle, Finleyville, parts of Carroll Twp., as well as some other surrounding communities in Washington and Allegheny Counties.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 6 p.m.

Rostraver Twp. Upgrades Police Cruiser

Cleaning up dilapidated buildings along Belle Vernon’s Main St. again topped Council’s April 9 agenda, as councilmembers continued exploring options.

The property at 427 Main Street has been deemed a property of concern by safety officials. The property entered bankruptcy proceedings in 2010, and has a mortgage and real estate tax liens against it, according to Council Solicitor Mark Galper.

Councilmembers are exploring options to acquire the property with little burden to taxpayers, and then demolish it.

Councilmembers were updated on an on-lot sewage issue discussed last month.

The PA Department of Environmental Protection sent a letter regarding a complaint it received of the malfunctioning system at a property on Sampson St. The property owner has been notified, although at the time of the meeting, the problem had not been fixed.

The next Council meeting is set for May 14.

The Rostraver Twp. police department will be upgrading one of its cruisers, following an approval from commissioners at the April 4 meeting. The township will be trading in a 1998 Crown Victoria with more than 300,000 miles for an updated 2012 Dodge Charger. The vehicle will be purchased through the Pennsylvania Police and Utility Bid List from Tri-State of Blairsville, at a cost of $29,515.59, which includes the $500 trade-in.

Commissioners also discussed on the ongoing school bus stop safety concerns in the Pricedale section of the township. Police have stepped up patrols in the area to monitor for vehicles speeding through the area and not stopping for school buses.

The next Commissioners meeting is slated for May 2.

Bentleyville Continues Paving Project; Seeks Planning Commission Candidates

Bentleyville’s April 3 meeting opened with a discussion of bids submitted for the Borough’s insurance needs. It was decided that a committee comprised of Stan Glowaski, Joe Kurilko, Roy Larimer, and Sherry Hreha study these bids and make recommendations for the May 1 meeting.

For the 2012 paving project, it was recommended to invite PennDOT to come in to discuss what needs to be done and the associated costs. Fibropaving was discussed as an alternative to Superpave and other current paving materials.

Caramel Park is in good shape, with 144 players signed to play baseball this season, the water fountain has been installed and is operating, the drainage is completed, and the holes have been filled by Gene Vittone.

Ray Psolka’s term on the BMA expires June 30, 2012. Stan Glowasli’s and Sherry Hreha’s terms on the Planning Commission expire May 31, 2012. Council members are asked to suggest knowledgeable people they may know who would be good candidates to serve on the Planning Commission.

In other business: It was decided to accept Constellation Energy (through APPI) as

the Borough electric provider at 5.3¢/KWH. To satisfy requirements of the UCC Board, Bob Taylor will be asked if Bentleyville can go in with the group of Somerset, North Bethlehem, Deemston, and Amwell.

A motion to accept the 2011 Borough Audit and advertise the same was approved.

An amount of $102 plus freight was approved for a plexiglass replacement window at Richardson Park.

The street sweeper is in use and works well.

Storm drains on Beallsville Rd. are plugging and need to be cleaned out.

PennDOTwill be asked to inspect and fix the issue.

The hire of Ruth Dinardo as temporary secretary to assist Sherry Hreha for two 8-hour days/week at the rate of $12/hour with no benefits was approved.

Additionally, the adoption of Resolution 1 of 2012 to raise the rate of prevailing wage from $25,000 to $180,000 was approved. This action will give the Borough a better use of monies for projects being done. It was also approved/reaffirmed that anyone performing work for the Borough must submit a certificate of insurance prior to work being done.

Southwest Regional Police Department Uses New RAIDS Website

The Southwest Regional Police Department (SRPD) now uses the new RAIDS website, which provides interactive crime reporting for police departments and crime trackers nationwide. SRPD Chief John Hartman has repeatedly stated that he believes in police transparency. The RAIDS website provides a visual display of when and where crimes are being committed (no names) as well as some analytical data. SRPD is the first police department in Pennsylvania to use the system. Visit www.raidsonline.com.

Charleroi Adds Finishing Touches to Regional Police; Takes Care of Cat Population

At the April 12 regular Charleroi Borough Council meeting, the regional police bought all Charleroi Borough police vehicles for only $1. The borough manager was authorized to transfer vehicle titles, DEA equitable sharing funds, police evidence funds and ownership of the canine assets funds to the regional police. There were, however, some questions over who actually owns the dogs themselves, now that the R.P.D. is up and running. “We don’t know who technically owns the police dogs,” said Borough Manager Donn Henderson. “[It may be] the region, Charleroi Borough, or the individual officer.”

That question is being looked into for the next meeting, to be held on May 10.

Such were the nuances and growing pains associated with completing the building of the long-awaited regional police force, which began operation on April 4. Mayor Nancy Ellis congratulated everyone who worked on the project, including intern Kaitlin Bair, who submitted her completed mapgram of the area for the officers.

“North Charleroi is now much happier,” said Ellis.

Even though the question of police dog ownership is still up in the air, the cat population in Charleroi is being handled. Animal Friends have treated 20 or so cats and collected over 150 of them throughout the winter, all with no charge to the Borough. Faith, from Animal Friends, along with Mayor Ellis is responsible for this project.

Faith noted, however, that even the feral cats found in Charleroi were not sick and after treatment they posed no harm to human health.

Council President Mark Alterici noted the new signage at both ends of town. The streets department has replaced grates and pulled out older trees. About 60 volunteers and three hired summer workers will all help with the upcoming Charleroi clean-up days on the 27th and 28th. “We hope it will uplift and bring a sense of pride to the community,” says Alterici.

In other news: Charleroi received a $5,200 grant from Comcast, which will be used for the newly-built Market House.

A benefit dance is being held at the American Legion on April 27th featuring Mark Smith and the Hooligans.

Proceeds go toward the restoration of the Coyle Theatre A citizen complaint was given about the state of construction on 7th St. and Meadow Ave., saying that it was dangerous for holes dug to be filled with only black-top and/or hay. The borough replied that the construction work is only half-complete and they will forward his concerns to Tommy Santoro, street supervisor.

Student Government Day is scheduled for May 18, sponsored by the Ladies Auxillary with CHS principal Dr. Furko providing students who are interested in learning about governmental work.

A motion has also been requested to suspend the liquor license of a local bar, Dominick’s.

Ordinances were approved to establish registration for area pawnbrokers and for establishing Charleroi’s membership in the inter-governmental coop.

Charleroi residents will again have to be vigilant in their parking as meter enforcement officer Sam Kopach is on the job again.

Local People News MVH Doctor Wins Prestigious Dance Award Move over Hines Ward there’s a new dance champion in Western Pennsylvania and he’s right here in the Valley.

Tuan-Anh L. Ung, MD, who is familiar to many local residents as one of the friendly doctors in Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Emergency Department, was awarded the Top Student Award in the Full Silver Level at World DanceO-Rama.

The much-anticipated event, which was held March 21 through 25 in New York City, is Arthur Murray’s International Competition.

More than 12,000 entries from all over the globe were recorded in this event, which comDr. Tuan-Anh L. Ung of Monongahela Valley Hospital memorated the 100th Year of poses with Ashley Geidel, his dancing partner at Worldthe Arthur Murray School of Dance-O-Rama in New York.

Dr. Ung and his teacher, Ashley Geidel, who is his instructor at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in McMurray, danced 38 times during the course of the competition. Their dances included the Waltz, Cha-Cha, Viennese Waltz, Rumba, Fox Trot, Tango, Swing, Bolero and Salsa. He has been dancing for 14 years.

Dr. Ung enjoys dancing, but he spends a great deal of time providing compassionate medical care to people who visit Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Emergency Department.

Edwin Higgins of West Newton hasn’t stopped plastering since Lloyd Trout, a minister and also a plasterer, taught him to plaster when he was 21 years old. His work is very well-known and many homeowners have sought him out over his years of working in his art.

The GRC has scheduled Kate Crawford of Project Sweet Peas: Shannon’s Star, a local (Rostraver Twp.) non-profit to be the guest speaker for May’s luncheon event, to take place on May 22.

Project Sweet Peas: Shannon's Star works with Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and Magee-Women’s NICUs to provide patients, and families with items to aid them throughout their stay. They offer a variety of care packages which are customized to the hospitals need and availability. The program supports the wellness of families by providing care packages and other services that offer comfort while furthering the bond between parent and child, and treasured keepsakes to families who have experienced a loss.

Tri-Community Ambulance Receives State-Funded Grant For New Equipment

Tri-Community Ambulance in Monongahela recently purchased new video laryngoscope devices through a state grant. This makes the ambulance service one of the first in the region to use this cutting-edge device. The approved funding came from the PA Volunteer Ambulance Service Grant and makes the process of an advanced airway now virtually “dummy proof.”

Accessibility & Security It is common knowledge that when you are selling your home, you (the seller) should NOT be present when an agent brings a potential buyer to view the property.

Successful marketing means that buyers need to be able to imagine the house as their future home and have the freedom to verbalize their perceptions to their agent. Nothing puts the damper on the showing process more that having the current owners hanging around. But, even worse, is if the buyer doesn't have convenient access to the property during their own time schedule.

That is one reason why the lockbox is such a valuable tool valuable for the industry. It encourages showings by making showing arrangements more uniform in process and easier to schedule. A lockbox is a hollow box that attaches to the front doorknob or some secure place nearby. Inside the hollow area of the lockbox is another smaller sized plastic box that contains the key to the house.

When an agent opens the lockbox, that smaller container slides out and the key to the door is safely tucked inside.

A stranger cannot come by, open the box, get the key and gain entry to the house; only Multiple Listing Service members can do that. The electronic lockboxes have a tiny microprocessor inside. Agents need a very specific type of electronic key to open it and the only way to obtain the key is to be an active member of the Multiple Listing Service. Each of the electronic keys have a unique identifier, so when someone opens the lockbox, the microprocessor inside “registers” the specific agent who opens it. The Rules and Regulations of the Multiple Listing service prohibit its members from allowing another agent or non-member to use their electronic key or they are subject to termination, suspension or fines.

Because the box is “reset” just before being placed on the door, any electronic key (member agent) who opens the box can be identified – as well as the date and time they entered the house. That information can be downloaded through the multi list. This works wonderfully as a security measure for the homeowner because the access history is recorded! This access history may be supplied to law enforcement if needed. It is also the means by which the listing agent knows who to call to ask for feedback from the showings.

The main purpose of the lockbox is to make the home more saleable by inviting showings that are typically driven primarily by the potential buyer’s schedule. West Penn Multi List currently has about 5,500 members.

Conceivably, any one of those members has the potential of representing a buyer that wants to view the property. As

you can imagine, without having an easy and secure method to show property, selling a home would be much more difficult.

Consider the alternatives.

Without a lockbox, the seller might have to be present when the buyer came by with their agent, and that does not really help to sell the home.

Sellers could leave the door unlocked,but in today’s security-conscious world, that is not a prudent idea.

Another possibility is that the seller gives a key to their listing agent. Then the listing agent would always have to be present when another agent brought a buyer to the home. Although this may sound plausible, it is not. The more people that have to be involved when trying to coordinate schedules, the less likely it is that a showing will take place at all. And the buyer's agent may not want their client exposed to the seller's agent for whatever reason.

Showings would need to be very tightly scheduled if they could be arranged at all.

When you place any type of limitation on showings, you are limiting the exposure of the property. Making your property available for viewing to accommodate buyers’ schedules is simply part of the process. Encouraging showings through the use of lockboxes encourages sales.

Financial Advisor Offers Free Seminar to Mon Valley Businesses A former resident of the Mon Valley has developed a personal finance workshop known as “Making Financial Sense” to present to Southwestern PA businesses and civic groups.

Ryan Galiotto, a 2002 graduate of Belle Vernon Area High School and current financial and retirement advisor with Fields Financial Services in Hopwood, PA says he created the workshop due to high demand. “A lot of businesses and civic leaders were coming to me and asking me if I’d speak to their group regarding personal finance.” Galiotto said. “That motivated me to develop a workshop that I could present to the community.” He plans to offer the workshop to organizations in the Mon Valley this spring.

Though Galiotto does not charge for presenting the workshop, he said he gets paid in knowing that he’s helping others and gaining exposure.

By anyone’s definition, 90 years represents a long period of time. In the world of banking, especially in the days of economic downturns, mergers and changing markets, surviving 90 years is considered a sign of doing something right to serve customers.

It’s being able to accomplish all of those things and more is what First Federal Savings Bank believes has been its ability to survive in a changing Mon Valley, while maintaining a positive outlook for the future.

“I think we’ve become part of the fabric of the Mon Valley,” said Brook Gardner, associate vice president and market manager, whose territory includes the Rostraver office at 1670 Broad Ave. in Belle Vernon, along with Mon Valley offices in Monessen, Monongahela, Donora and Perryopolis and offices in Washington, Peters Township and Uniontown. “Ninety years of serving a region also says a lot about a financial institution that has been able to survive through the ups and downs we’ve experienced.”

The bank opened their Monessen headquarters in 1970, and opened its familiar Rostraver branch office in 1974. “I think it demonstrated that First Federal was confident in the region, and they were able to position themselves well within the Mon Valley market,” he added. “First Federal really became a bank leader at that time.”

Originally known as Monessen Home Building & Loan, First Federal gained a Savings Bank charter in 1990. Gardner said the bank’s core principles help determine the image and culture, and guide decision making in all the bank’s offices.

“Most of First Federal Savings Bank employees live within the communities where their branch office is located,” he said. “That’s important because it helps us relate to our customers in a much more proactive way.” As one who grew up in the Mon Valley himself, Gardner said he has particularly fond memories of the Rostraver Twp. location, which he saw grow during the early part of the 1970s.

Monongahela Scoops Up New Business Judeth Rose Ice Cream Parlor Officially Open

Worldwide customer care provider, Teleperformance, held the grand re-opening of their Brownsville office on April 3, 2012. The company is the number one outsourcer of customer care, technical support, and debt collections operations to businesses like major telephone carriers, cable providers, and insurance companies. Teleperformance has won numerous awards, including CRM Magazine’s 2011 Service Leader Award.

The Brownsville center was forced to layoff over 200 employees in the summer of 2011 due to local client reduction, but with the current success of that office and addition of new clients they are looking to bring in more staff and boost the local economy. Jim Phillips, the vice president of recruiting for Teleperformance USA, said they are currently looking to fill 200 positions at the Brownsville location.

Applicants need to have a high school diploma or equivalency and pass a drug screening and background check. Teleperformance prefers 6 months of prior customer service experience and interested men and women should have basic computer knowledge and typing skills. There is a 5-week paid training program for new employees.

Teleperformance was created by Daniel Julien in Paris in 1978 and now operates in 49 countries around the world with over 135,000 employees. The first contact center in the United States was established in 1993. In 2009, they launched Teleperformance Platinum, which is a premium service that, according to the company’s website, “deepens business understanding and optimizes key performance indicators.”

Although unofficially open for business at 715 W. Main St. in Monongahela since October 2011, the Judeth Rose Ice Cream Parlor had its Grand Opening on April 16, 2012. Currently, sales are on a take-out only basis — no seating is available, but you can park at the curb, relax, and eat in your car if you like.

Proprietors Juan Rodriguez and Judy Soccio display a mouth-watering banana split at their walk-up window.

Their slogan is: “Old Fashioned Goodness — and so much more!” That’s the philosophy of this store, which serves ice cream cones/floats/cookie sandwiches, sundaes, milkshakes, banana splits, and other sandwiches. Nathan’s Hot Dogs are featured, as well as Taco Tuesdays, and handcut French fries. After Memorial Day, the menu will be expanded to include barbecue beef and pork, fish on Fridays, catfish, shrimp, and gumbo. Throughout the summer, seating will be available in the back of the building.

Their ice cream is strictly local--the Cold Cow brand (West Mifflin), made from Coulteryahn Dairy milk in the Carrick neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Although Cold Cow products can be purchased in a grocery store, this is the only outlet for the ice cream by the scoop.

Co-owners Judy Soccio and Juan Rodriguez, who has culinary training, have a lot more ideas for the future: a birthday observance for their 160-year-old building, ice cream in an old-fashioned Victorian parlor (which is currently being restored), kids’ birthday parties, meals made for diabetics, and private in-house dining by reservation for meetings, seminars, card parties, or rehearsal dinners. A ramp is provided for wheelchair accessibility.

Prices vary from $1.53 for a soda to about $15 for a complete meal. All individual prices end in the digit “3”, as an honor to the Holy Trinity of their faith.

Local Worship CWCC Honors Scholarship Recipient Members of the Catholic Women’s College Club held their April 2nd meeting at Jozwiak Hall in the St. Vincent de Paul building in Monessen. Mary Krett, chairwoman for the month, welcomed everyone to the meeting, which was focused on hope and rebirth.

She then turned the meeting over to the Scholarship Committee chairwoman, Lisa Foglia,who introduced the club’s scholarship recipient for 2012. Nicole Yakich, a senior from Charleroi Area High School and a member of Mary, Mother of the Church in Charleroi was the recipient. She is Nicole Yakich of the daughter of Julie and Charlie Yakich from Charleroi.

Krett introduced Matt Trotter, a vocalist from the area. He beautifully sang You Raise Me Up and America.

Welfare chairwoman Dorthy Jozwiak will be receiving a papal award for her inspiration to others. On April 29 at 3 p.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Greensburg, she will receive a medal of The Lady of the Order of St. Gregory I. All members applauded her in recognition by His Excellency Bishop Lawrence Brandt.

The gift of the month was won by Julie Yakich, mother of the scholarship recipient. Lia Petaccia informed members that the May banquet will be held on May 7 at 6 p.m. at the Cedarbrook Restaurant in Belle Vernon.

Perfect Celebration for Easter Weekend “Last Supper” Performance at Pricedale Union Church

People who attended the performance of the “Last Supper” at the Pricedale Union Church couldn’t have been in a better place to celebrate Good Friday.

The new church, according to Pastor Jim Mimidis, was set up to accommodate about 400 and the April 6 performance was filled to near-capacity. The drama was written and directed by Ralph E. Stone, who spends a good deal of time writing on Christian thought and principles.

The setting for Stone’s “Last Supper” was based on Leonardo The Agony in The Garden Da Vinci’s masterpiece painting of the Last Supper. The retelling of the events surrounding the Last Supper was accomplished in this play by a modern-day newsman who interviewed the apostle Paul and the original twelve apostles who attended the Last Supper with Christ. The show combined acting and visual projections with vocal solos, three which were accompanied by the PUC Choir.

The portrayal of Christ and his apostles, the stage settings, costumes, sound control and vocals were excellent, resulting in a near-professional performance.

Several weeks ago, the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling Championship (PJW) bouts took place in Hershey, PA. Our area was well represented, and some of the aspiring young wrestlers brought home medals.

Wrestling is one of the sports where starting at an early age is crucial if an athlete is to be successful at the JV and Varsity levels. The most basic moves need to be learned early so they become natural for a young wrestler before reaching the middle school or high school levels of competition.

During the past month Percy “Quad” Law and Alfon Cook signed letters of intent to attend Gannon University and Slippery Rock University, respectively, on football scholarships.

Percy Law was named as an “All Conference” and “All State” player and will be remembered by Ringgold fans for his elusive running and speed. Percy posted a Percy “Quad” Law signs a letter of intent to attend Gannon University as his father, Percy Law III, and Ringgold’s record of 120 yards/game Coach Matt Humbert look on. with an amazing 1,361 yards rushing. His passing stats were 31 of 68 for 637 yards. He’s accredited with 16 TDs running and 4 passing TDs. Ringgold’s Coach Matt Humbert believes Gannon will give Percy a shot at quarterback but may decide to use him as a slot wide receiver.

Alfon Cook was also named as an “All Conference” player. School News...School News Cosmetology Academy at DEC Announces Winners of Haircutting, Nail Art Competitions The Cosmetology Academy at Douglas Education Center (DEC) held its 2nd annual Dare to Express Haircutting and Nail Art Competitions on Wednesday, March 21 at the Monessen-based schools’ Van Keulen Complex. Both competitions were open to all students of Career and Technology Center schools and high schools. No licensed professional cosmetologists were eligible to enter.

Fifteen teams, composed of 30 students from around the region, participated in the Dare to Express Nail Art Competition.

Both competitions were judged on level of difficulty, originality, use of color, and final presentation, as well as specific requirements for each. The 2012 Dare to Express Haircutting and Nail Art Competition winners were as follows: 1st Place Michiko Karaffa and Heather Nutter (Model) of Connellsville Area Career and Technical Center; 2nd Place - Julianne Gray and Victoria Blackburn (Model) of Steel Center Area Vocational Technical School; and 3rd Place - Samantha Heiler and Jordan Logan (Model) of Connellsville Area Career and Technical Center.

BVA Participates in Elementary Quiz Bowl Challenge Students in the gifted program at Belle Vernon Area School District participated in the Elementary Quiz Bowl Challenge on Friday, March 30. BVA brought 6 teams to the event, which was hosted by Charleroi Area School District. Teams from Charleroi, Yough and Monessen also competed in the challenge. The quiz bowl is a test of general knowledge from various subjects ranging from literature to chemistry. The intermediate team of Aaron Brown, SaraAnn Buza, Ben Filak, Sarah McCloskey and Chase Ozegovich went undefeated throughout the day and captured a 1st place award. Charleroi American Legion Auxiliary [ALA] Unit 22 President, Darlene McBurnie contacted State Representative Peter J Daley regarding the need for several flags at the Charleroi School District. On March 22 at the Center in the Woods, State Rep. Peter J. Daley presented to Charleroi Elementary Principal Steven Shields a POW flag and an American Flag to Charleroi Middle School Principal Mary Tickner and Charleroi High School Principal Patricia Mason for their shared flagpole and gave them several classroom flags to be divided among Charleroi elementary, middle, and high schools.

ALA President McBurnie and Education Chairman Virginia Boso delivered binders and a large box of pencils, pens, paper, Kleenex, glue sticks, notebooks, erasers, colored pencils, crayons, markers, and Labels for Education to the Charleroi schools as

part of the "Give 10 for Education" auxiliary program. Many teachers have personally supplied students with these items and greatly appreciated the donation. Unit 22 will continue collecting Campbell's and General Mills "Labels for Education" for the school to redeem and ask area residents to help by saving these labels for the school.

The Charleroi school principals and Charleroi Auxiliary and were very impressed with State Rep. Daley's quick response to their need and making himself available to answer any questions that may arise in the future. Rep. Daley hopes to be able to attend the May 18 Charleroi Student Government Day Luncheon at Charleroi American Legion Post 22 that will be served by the Auxiliary, and he applauded the principals for their dedication to the students and school and encouraged them to hope for the best.

One child’s submission from each grade, 1 – 5, is selected. This year’s winners are: Grade 1 Morgan Walsh; Grade 2 - Aleah Siwula; Grade 3 - Eva Vogt; Grade 4 - Jennie Bostich; and Grade 5 - Anna Vogt. These talented students will now be competing with children from all over the United States.

Madonna Catholic Regional School was the first school in Pennsylvania whose middle school students formed a LEO Club. Under the Monongahela/Donora Lions Club, members were presented with a banner, gong and gavel along with their first patch in recognition for service. MCRS teacher Kathy Miller received an Outstanding Service Award for dedicated service in fulfilling the roles of educator, motivator, counselor, liaison, and humanitarian as Leo Club Advisor.

MCRS kindergarten students enjoyed a fun science activity when they made habitats for animals that then slept quietly in their classroom until they woke them up on the first day of spring.

For their Lenten Service Project, MCRS students purchased shoes for $1 or more as they helped the Chimbote Mission of Peru "Take a Step Toward a Brighter Future" by raising much needed funds.

Students were asked to do small jobs around the house to earn donations. The shoes made a brightly colored train throughout the school halls.

Bentworth Hosts Awards Program for Spring Athletes

The regular meeting of the Bentworth School Board opened on April 16 with guest Sherry McMurray in support of not removing the library program at the middle school, and she asked the Board to reconsider removing the librarian. Guest Michelle Davis spoke in support of the library program and the computer program and also asked the Board to reconsider. Guest Lori Schrock asked for background information on the new girls’ volleyball coach hire.

Superintendent Baker complimented tennis player Matt Lynch for his success this season. An awards program was held at Bentworth High School on Friday April 20 at 2 p.m. to in recognition of the successful spring sports season.

The following hires were approved: Head girls’ basketball coach, Stacy Skerbetz; head boys’ basketball coach, Robert Kennedy; head wrestling coach, Mike Shrader; and head volleyball coach, Alyssa Dye. The following retirements were approved effective at the conclusion of the 2011-12 school year: John Areford; Ronald Johnson; Diane Lese; Linda Nickeson; Bernice Metz; Robynne Moessner; Mary Rados; Thomas Teagarden; Judy Waggoner; and Diane Watson. Superintendent Baker expressed gratitude for their years of service to the District.

Superintendent Baker expressed sympathy and gratitude on behalf of the District in the April 15 death of Dr. Eugene Skiffington, who was the school physician for the past 15 years.

Mon Valley Career and Technical Center Receives Grant State Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-Fayette/Washington, announced that the Mon Valley Career and Technical Center had received a grant to purchase equipment to enhance students’ technical education. The school was approved for a $17,473 Technical Education Equipment Grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The goal of the department is to raise the academic and technical proficiency of students by ensuring students are trained on equipment that is found in an industry.

The Technical Education Grant program is a competitive grant that focuses on industry relevance. "I give the staff and administration at Mon Valley Career and Technical Center credit for successfully gaining this state grant, as well as for their efforts to continually monitor the job market and to offer educational opportunities to meet those needs," Daley said.

SCHOOL NEWS 1st BVA Youth Baseball Night Recognizes Youth Organizations The first BVA Youth Baseball Night was held on Wednesday, April 18 at the John DiVirgilio Sports Complex in Rostraver Twp. prior to the 7 p.m. game against the Mt. Pleasant Vikings.

The BVA Youth Night was a community collaboration initiated by Rostraver Youth Baseball Assoc. President Marci Seliga. All Belle Vernon Area youth baseball teams were invited to participate.

As each youth team was announced, the players and their coaches walked on to the field and took their positions on the first base and third base lines.

Sophomore catcher Parker Lynn Recognition was made to all officers of and Superintendent Stephen Russell, the youth organizations, including Belle who threw the first pitch.

Ringgold Offered Donations of Cash and Property

After the tumultuous meetings of the past half-year or so, the April Ringgold School Board Meeting was relatively short and quiet. Attendance was down a bit from previous meetings as well.

Although last month it was announced that four options for Ringgold facilities use were under discussion, no new plan for facilities use was discussed or announced. No action was taken to set a closing date for the Finley Middle School, but Board President Chuck Smith did state that the Finley Middle School will remain open for the entire 2012/2013 school year. A list of maintenance items for the Finley Middle School is being developed by the Ringgold Architect/Engineer and Ringgold’s facilities maintenance personnel for work over the summer months. New members of the school board are taking informational tours of the former Donora and Monongahela Elementary school building (DEC and MEC) so they have a better appreciation of the condition of the two closed buildings. Smith still seems to favor keeping the two buildings in a condition where they could be reopened if a serious problem surfaced in any of the other Ringgold buildings. An attendee received no clear answer to a question regarding the cost of maintaining DEC and MEC—possibly enough maintenance to halt further deterioration, with water damage seeming to be a major concern.

Ringgold’s financial consultant presented options to the board related to a 2008 bond issue that could be sold prior to the Aug 1, 2013 call date. Due to favorable bond market conditions, Ringgold could realize a significant advantage from the sale of the bonds. The amount depends on interest rates at the time of sale. The board will review the options and set conditions that will trigger “selling actions” by the financial consultant at the May meeting.

The Union Roads United Methodist Church located next to the Ringgold Elementary School North in Gastonville has informed the school district that it is closing its doors. The church has offered to donate its buildings and property to the school district. The board passed a motion to contact church officials notifying them that the board is interested in acquiring the property and to begin the process of acquisition by having the required documents drawn up to be presented to the board for approval.

The board also approved acceptance of a $70,000 donation from the Bernhard-Bidzila family, which is to be placed in a Bernhard-Bidzila Family Scholarship Trust Fund for the purpose of accepting funds donated for the ben-

efit of Ringgold seniors who have excelled in helping the community. This may have triggered another motion to establish the “Ringgold Foundation” for the purpose of accepting and managing funds donated to the Ringgold School District. The foundation board will consist of five members: the superintendent, a principal, a Ringgold School Board Member, and two individuals from the community. The motion also authorizes the board auditors Cypher & Cypher to perform the work necessary to set up the foundation and approved an expenditure of not more than $1,000 to cover the necessary filing fees required.

A motion passed scheduling a special meeting on April 25 at 7 pm for the purpose of electing and approving a new superintendent for the Ringgold School District. The board secretary was directed to mail each board member a notice of time, place and purpose of this meeting.

Well-nourished grass withstands harsh conditions better, and provides a lush, durable place to play while squeezing out unwanted weeds by blocking access to sunlight. Follow these tips to take your grass from tired to terrific.

2012 Senior Games Scheduled for June 20 Southwestern PA Area Agency on Aging recently announced that Albert Gallatin Senior High School, just outside of Uniontown on 1119 Township Drive, will be the site of the 2012 Senior Games on Wednesday, June 20, with the Opening Ceremonies and the Parade of Athletes beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the high school stadium.

Joining the Area Agency on Aging on the Fayette County Senior Games Task Force is Albert Gallatin Human Services, Connellsville Area Senior Tigers, Crosskeys Human Services, Inc., and Fayette County Community Action Agency, Inc. The games are held annually for every adult 50 years-of-age and older who resides in Fayette, Greene and

Washington counties. Individuals who live outside of the participating counties are also eligible if they belong to a senior center within one of the three the counties. Packets of information have been sent to area senior centers; however, all senior organizations interested in taking part in the games may contact the Area Agency on Aging at 1-888-3002704 or 724-489-8080, extension 4430, and a packet with information about the competitive events at the Senior Games can be forwarded.

Senior centers and senior organizations are also invited to take part in the Parade of Athletes during the opening ceremonies. Parade units and their banners will be judged separately and there will be first and second place awards for

senior centers and first and second place awards for satellite centers/senior organizations.

This year’s slogan, “Seniors Moving Mountains,” was chosen to highlight the mountains that complement the horizon of Fayette County where the Games are being hosted, and to emphasize the strength that seniors have, not only as they compete in the Senior Games, but also as they continue to make a positive difference in their communities and in everything that surrounds them.

The competitive sporting events begin immediately after the opening ceremonies. Competitions include the 50Yard Dash, One-Mile Walk, Basketball Toss, Bocce, Casting, Football Throw, Horseshoes, Putting, Shuffleboard, Softball Throw, and Stationary Bike.

Although pre-registration is requested, individuals may register on Senior Games day for all competitions, with the exception of Shuffleboard, which requires a pre-registration by June 8.

Official registration forms may be picked up at senior centers in Fayette, Greene and Washington Counties, by calling the Area Agency on Aging or visiting the website at www.swpa-aaa.org.

The event also hosts a PrimeTime Health Fair, a Senior Variety Show, Super Bingo, and food and craft booths.

Corporate sponsors supporting the Senior Games include Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Range Resources, Consol Energy, HealthAmerica Advantra and SeniorLIFE. The individual athletic competitions, to date, are being sponsored by the American Legion Post 499, Amber House at Harmon House Care Center, Fike Chevrolet of Masontown, Information Age Technologies, Inc., The Health Insurance Store, Uniontown Hospital, Uniontown Mall, Uniontown Rotary Club, and United Healthcare Community Plan.

No Senior Games competitions are complete without the Victory Celebration and Awards banquet, which will be held this year at the Summit Inn Resort, Farmington, on Thursday, June 28. Doors will open at 4 p.m. and dinner will be served at 5 p.m. After dinner and awards recognitions, the Classics will provide entertainment for listening and dancing pleasure. Banquet tickets will be available by mid-May at local senior centers and Area Agency on Aging offices.

• Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED - will be held every other month on the second Saturday.

Next class will be held Saturday, June 9, cost is $60. Suitable for personnel care home workers, teachers and daycare center for adults and children and churches. Class starts at 9 a.m. and finishes around 1 p.m. The class is held at Mon Valley EMS-1001 Donner Avenue, Monessen. Students must pre-register and pre-pay.

All classes must have a least two paid students or the class will be canceled; you will be notified if this should occur.

An emergency medical technician (EMT) class will begin in September 2012. The classes are every Monday and Wednesday with an occasional Saturday. Classes are from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The class is sponsored by the Westmoreland County Community College. Cost of the class is $225 plus books. The tuition is subject to change as it gets closer to the class.

You must be 16 years of age to take the class. Anyone interested give the training center a call and an application will be mailed to you.

Mon Valley YMCA Holds ‘80s-Themed Zumba Class Brittany Mucy, who teaches Zumba and Senior Swing at the Mon Valley YMCA, led her Saturday morning Zumba class through an ‘80s style Zumba workout. Participants Zumba included those who had taken aerobic dance in the 1980s and those just born in that decade. Stroke Survivor Credits God and MVH in Lifesaving Recovery Cheryl Munda, COTA\L, certified occupational therapy assistant, works with stroke survivor Kenneth E. Martin in MVH’s Occupational Therapy Center.

Being in the right place at the right time can have the right results — at least that’s what Kenneth E. Martin, 49, of Monessen believes. An over-theroad truck driver, Martin typically is only home four to six days per month.

On Monday, May 30, 2011 at approximately 2:30 a.m., he was awakened and could not move.

Because it was Memorial Day weekend, he was sleeping comfortably in his own bed. He woke up his wife, Barb, who immediately called an ambulance. Martin was taken to Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Emergency Department, where an MRI revealed that he experienced a stroke — a blood clot struck the left side of his brain, which caused paralysis to the right side of his body.

“I thank God that it was a holiday weekend, otherwise I would have been alone in Mountain Top, PA sleeping in the bed of my tractor when the paralysis came on,” said Martin. “It’s frightening to think about what may have happened if I was not at home when this occurred.”

After spending four days in MVH’s Intensive Care Unit, Martin was moved to a room on the hospital’s 5th floor and he began physical and occupational therapy the next day. “It took four or five people just to help me stand up,” he recalled. “I had to learn how to do everything all over again.

Just imagine what it would be like at your current age to learn to walk again or to simply dress yourself.”

Martin spent an entire month in

MVH doing physical therapy twice daily and occupational therapy once a day, including weekends. Since leaving the hospital, he returns to the hospital two days a week for outpatient physical therapy and occupational therapy. In physical therapy, Martin is strengthening his legs and learning to get his balance back. Walking with a cane, he practices climbing stairs. In occupational therapy, he is strengthening his shoulder and working to regain functional movement of his right arm and hand.

Cheryl Munda, COTA\L, certified occupational therapy assistant, has worked with Martin since his first day of occupational therapy to help him regain his strength and use of the right side of his body. “Ken has been an excellent patient,” said Munda. “He works really hard and is dedicated and very determined to be as independent as possible. He even requested extra therapy.”

Martin attends MVH Stroke Support Group, which meets the first Thursday of every month at 1 p.m. at MVH. “When I first started attending the meetings, I was a little depressed because I saw things that other people could do that I couldn’t do but then I realized that I could do things that they couldn’t do,” said Martin.

“Regular activities can really tire me out. Just putting on a shirt or getting dressed can be challenging. The people at Monongahela Valley Hospital are awesome. Without their program, I don’t know where I would be today.”
