T
he Mon Valley YMCA's Youth & Teen Center recently underwent some big renovations. These are the first updates since February 2005, when Youth & Teen Director AdorĂŠe DeLuca first opened it. "We had some lovely "elves" from PNC Bank do a community service project here and ripped out the old carpet, hauled out old couches and chairs and put a fresh new coat of paint on the walls and it looks great!" said AdorĂŠe "Our Teen Leaders Club has been painting individual blocks on the walls also. I like the teens to be as much a part of the design as possible and then they feel more ownership of the area." With the addition of a new sectional couch in the TV area, newly painted floor, and study area, there will also be lockers for teens to keep coats and backpacks so they don't have to use the locker rooms.

Bentleyville Residents Come Together to Light Borough Streets for the Holidays Hard-working Bentleyville residents Linda Vrabel, Marie Larimer, and Roy Larimer marvel at how beautiful Bentleyville looks under the holiday lights while discussing improvements they can make for the 2013 season.
By Alice Harris
In the weeks preceding Christmas, a group of hard-working Bentleyville residents came together to make the town just a bit brighter for the Holidays. Council members Linda Vrabel and Roy Larimer, Marie Larimer, Borough secretary Kim Sacco, Streets Dept. workers Art Blackburn and Mark Bostich, and Ellsworth Streets Dept. workers went over each piece of previously used holiday lighting to refurbish it to look new again. Ellsworth workers helped Bentleyville workers put their lights up, and Bentleyville reciprocated to help Ellsworth install their holiday lights. Their efforts dressed both towns for the holidays for all to enjoy while spending a minimum of funds. The group has plans to raise monies to provide additional lighting and even better decorations for the upcoming 2013 holiday season. PHOTO: ALICE HARRIS

Rescued Horse Doing Better Thanks to Fallowfield Twp. and Washington County Volunteers By Jill Brown
Casey, a 29-yr.-old extraordinarily large and old horse, due to illness, could not even get up under her own power in early January. The beautiful Belgian draft horse “is doing fine now,” according to the owner. She says she owes the horse’s recovery to the power of prayer, having called Casey the Miracle Horse “prayer warriors” as soon Photo By: Chief Anthony Fleming as her horse fell ill. The story of that rescue begins with a call received from Fallowfield Twp. volunteer firefighters at 5:40 a.m. on January 3rd. They and members of the Washington County Animal Response Team responded to the emergency on 90 Debnar Lane Home. The veterinarian, identified only as Jennifer, was on the scene to relax the animal and give her electrolytes and fluids. Owner Laura Gilbert says she “thanks God for Jennifer.” Fallowfield Twp. Fire Chief Anthony Fleming says rescue workers were able to cradle the horse with straps and pull her up from the stable using a rope and pulley system. The horse is “retired and living out her life,” Fleming said. “Casey’s age is fairly old for her breed,” he says. Casey weigh over 2,000 pounds and, due to her size, can’t lie down for long periods of time; doing so cuts off the circulation in the legs. Slippery and wintery conditions both helped and hindered the effort, according to Fleming. “We were able to drag the horse about 20 feet,” he said. Finally, the team was able to secure Casey and get her to stand on her own in a pile of packed snow and hay. Casey was rewarded with a bucket of feed for her cooperation. She was laying on her left, and when we were able to roll her to right side, and she actually got up on her front legs.” he says. “Thirty seconds later we helped her onto her back legs and stayed with her for about 20 minutes,” Fleming explained. This was the second time Fallowfield firefighters responded to help Casey, following a similar situation in June. Conclusively, the horse’s owner, Laura Gilbert, is thankful to special people who helped in the rescue effort, and says, “I give God all the glory.”

Stockdale Returns to Yesteryear with Oldies Dance Series
Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates Rejoice in Successful Christmas Party
The past will meet the present when another in a series of successful “All Oldies, Only Oldies” dances (record hops) is presented Saturday, April 6, 8 p.m. to midnight, at the Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department’s social center and banquet hall. This is one of the largest and most popular dance hops of its kind in western Pennsylvania. Ralph Trilli, longtime area disc jockey and co-host with Bill Chappo of the Cruisin’ Sunday show on WJPA, will spin the oldies. Trilli was a longtime associate of the late Jim “J.D. the D.J.” Dudas and hosted a memorial tribute to Dudas in October 2011. Ron Paglia, who was the disc jockey at the original hops from December 21, 1957 through August 1964, will serve as guest host. The original dances were among the biggest in western Pennsylvania in the 1950s and early 1960s. Crowds of 1,000 or more teenagers were the rule during the heyday of those events, which featured many of the top recording artists of that era in live performances on the Stockdale stage. The event, which is open to the public, will feature a BYOE (Bring Your Own Everything) format. Patrons are invited to bring their own food and liquid refreshments. Admission is $10 per person, and reservations and additional information are available at 724-330-5002. Checks should be made payable to Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department and should be sent, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope, to Dance, P.O. Box 416, Roscoe, PA 15477. Those ordering tickets are requested to include their name, address, telephone number, and email address.
On Tuesday, December 18, the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates held their annual Christmas Party at the American Legion Post 949 in Carroll Twp. A tremendous turnout and the weather was truly in our favor; it was a wonderful evening. Our financial officer, Joseph Acton, was admitted to the Mon Valley Hospital and XO Barry was gracious to include Joe in the prayers of the blessing of the food prior to being served, and a card was out for all to sign to send to him. Our prayers and get well wishes was very abundant for Joe! The evening started out by being greeted at the door by George Diehl and Dorothy Cowan, Barry and Diane Anders, Joe and Nancy Tencer, all of whom manned the tables with the roster check-in and tickets for drinks and prizes. After an hour of fellowship, Marshall Lignian gave the invocation and Cdr. Bill Hess introduced the new members that were accepted this past year. XO Barry Anders gave the blessing and D&D Catering of Arnold City’s buffet was ready for all to share. A round of applause was given to the caterers for a delicious and plentiful meal. Chairman Jim Caserta, toastmaster for the evening, welcomed the attendee and called up Yeoman Jim Caldwell, who read "The Night Before Christmas, Sailor Style." Jim presented a David Letterman take-off of 10 reasons for joining the MidMon Valley Shipmates. Lorraine Caserta gave a reading of "Santa & Jesus" and followed with another reading of "Attitudes." XO Barry Anders followed by reciting the message of "It's a Veteran." Jim Caserta explained some of the happenings this past year at different events that included many mishaps of Co-Chair George Diehl. Jim also presented a take-off of "The Marriage Counselor." Missing this year was the arrival of Santa. This was always Joseph Zywan’s honor and this year, Joe has been recuperating and unable to attend. He was missed by all. The Two-Bell service was conducted by Bill Hess, George Diehl and Marshall Lignian, followed by the reading of the names of our departed shipmates by Jim Caserta. Jim introduced the officers and committee chairpersons and thanked them for their services this past year. Also acknowledged was the incoming chaplain for the new year, Fr. Fred Pfeil. The share the wealth was won by Wilbur Harris and ten gift certificates were won by Fred Owens, Nancy Tencer, Sam Levy, Peggy Savadeck, Mario Muccino, John Perozzi, Bob Mascetta, Norma Muccino, Marcella Ricci, and Elmer Trusky. George Hutchko, Commander of the A.L. Post 949, asked for a moment of silence in honor of the Sandy Hook victims and then gave the benediction to conclude the evening. The party committee was comprised of Jim Caserta and George Diehl, co-chairpersons, and Barry Anders, Bill Hess, Jim Caldwell and Marshall Lignian.

Ginger Hill Grange Comes Through Again
The dining hall at the Ginger Hill Grange was packed with supporters of David Phillips, who was in a serious car accident.
The Saddle Tramps entertained guests during dinner.
By Paul Chasko
Once again, when there’s a need for financial support, the folks at the Ginger Hill Grange rolled up their sleeves and cranked out another successful spaghetti dinner fundraiser. Several months ago, David Phillips (age 20) of RD2, Monongahela and a Ringgold graduate, was in a very serious auto accident and is still hospitalized. His family faces mounting medical bills, so, on January 20, the Ginger Hill Grange hosted a spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction to help raise funds. Sally Holets of the Grange estimated that they sold over 600 dinners at the event and that they used about 80 pounds of spaghetti. Local stores donated food and items for the Chinese auction. The dinner was so well attended that at times it was difficult finding a parking spot in the lot! The “Saddle Tramps,” a local country/western group for which David’s dad Rudy plays lead guitar, entertained folks enjoying their dinners. This is another great example of how the local Grange pitches in when it counts, and they thank all the great folks who attended the dinner. If you missed the dinner and would still like to help out, donations can be mailed to: Ginger Hill Grange, 3383 SR 136, Nottingham, PA 19362. Please include a note indicating that the donation is for the David Phillips fund. Go to our website at www.monvalleymessenger.comfor more photos of this event by Paul Chasko.

PODIATRY Q: How do you treat Heel Spurs? A: Ever step out of bed in the morning and instantly feel a sharp pain in your heel? Chances are you may have heel Dr. Sally and Dr. Fong spurs. A heel spur is a small growth on the bottom of your Fayette Podiatry Associates heel bone that frequently causes pain. The heel pain also may extend into the arch of your foot affecting a band of tissue supporting your your arch called the plantar fascia. Most people notice increased pain when they first take a few steps after they have been sitting or resting for an extended period of time. However, the heel can be sore all the time or become worse if left untreated. The good news is that heel pain can usually be treated with nonsurgical options, such as anti-inflammatory medications, changing shoe gear, wearing custom insoles or orthotics, and laser therapy. Sometimes heel spurs may best be treated surgically. Making an appointment to see a podiatrist will enable you to work together and decide on the best treatment plan for you. Tri-State Hydraulics was recently honored in the Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce January Member Spotlight. The Chamber staff was recently treated to a tour of its clean, organized, and highly productive plant in the former LeeNorse plant at the northern end of Charleroi Borough by Jim Palmer Jr., president. A closely knit team of employees carefully manufacture components that supply a diverse customer base. Among their products are pumps and motors, valves and controls, filters, hydraulic tools, jacks, accumulators and hoists. Even though “TriState” suggests three states, the company actually serves 15 states, and operates from four branches in Johnstown, (Pa.), South Carolina, Alabama and Ohio. Tri-State has approximately 150-200 orders in progress every day, and about 52 employees are at the Charleroi location. The total number is 70+ for all of the locations combined. Jim Palmer is extremely proud, and with good reason, about his company’s recognition in 2010 by NASA. Tri-State was a supplier to NASA’s Space Shuttle International Space Station with the Crawler Transporter. They were awarded the United Space Alliance Space Flight Awareness Supplier Award, an honor shared only with four other businesses nationwide. Tri-State Hydraulics has been a member of the Mon Valley Regional Chamber since 2000.

Let's Talk Real Estate by ROGER DOLANCH Broker/Owner
Home Ownership Means Great Tax Advantages According to IRS statistics, the average federal income tax refund last year was approximately $3,000. Add that to the other possible refunds of state and local taxes, and this represents a significant amount of cash. So, yes, it is possible to use that windfall toward the purchase of a new home! Once you own a home, you begin building equity in an investment instead of paying rent and paying someone else’s mortgage. Homeowners have additional tax deductions available that renters cannot

use that may reduce their tax bill even more. If you have been claiming the standard deduction up until now, the extra write-offs that you get from owning a home almost certainly will make you an itemizer. Suddenly, the state taxes you pay and your charitable donations may earn you extra tax savings too. The biggest deduction homeowners enjoy is the mortgage interest deduction. Your lender will send you IRS Form 1098 in January that lists the amount of mortgage interest you paid during the previous year. That is the amount you deduct on Schedule A. You can also deduct the county, municipal, and school property taxes you pay each year. The amount may be shown on the Form 1098 you receive from your lender if you pay your taxes through an escrow account. If you pay them directly, check your records or your checkbook registry. Additionally, home buyers who make a down payment of less than 20 percent of a home’s cost are required to have mortgage insurance, which is an extra fee that protects the lender if the borrower fails to repay the loan. For mortgages issued in 2007 or after, home buyers can deduct their mortgage insurance premiums. This deduction is scheduled to end at the end of the 2013 tax year. Once you own the home, going green has tax

advantages too! Some energy-saving home improvements can earn you an additional tax break in the form of an energy tax credit worth up to $500. A tax credit is more valuable than a tax deduction because a credit reduces your tax bill dollar for dollar. There is also a completely separate credit equal to 30 percent of the cost of more expensive and exotic energy-efficient equipment such as solar-powered generators and water heaters. This represents a short list of some of the tax advantages of homeownership. We advise everyone to keep good records and consult your tax preparer or CPA for specific details, because each individual’s situation is special and unique.

Wedding Guide 4 Steps to Finding the Perfect Engagement Ring (NewsUSA) - There are a few big purchases in life that you really don't want to mess up – a first house, a health care plan, a new car, and especially, the engagement ring for your loved one. According to The Knot, a popular wedding inspiration magazine and planning website, the decision is so important it takes consumers more than three months to find the perfect ring, and the average cost is $5,000. If you're starting to sweat under the pressure, here's a step-by-step guide to make your decision easier: 1. Determine the Metal • Platinum is a naturally white metal, meaning it will never fade, change color, or need to be re-dipped or re-plated. • White gold, on the other hand, is a created by adding an alloy mix to yel-
low gold. As the white color fades, the ring will need to be re-dipped a few times each year. • Platinum pairs well with all stones because its natural color will not cast any unwanted color onto the gem, plus its density makes for an extremely secure setting. • If you want matching bands, be sure to consider what your partner likes before deciding on a metal. 2. Determine the Cut of the Stone • Traditionally, round and princess cuts are the most popular. • Recently, celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Sofia Vergara and Drew Barrymore have brought attention to less common cuts such as emerald, cushion and radiant. 3. Determine the Style of the Ring • Vintage: Offering a traditional look,
these settings can either be an actual estate piece or a new ring with a vintage style. • Modern: Tension settings, where the diamond is held without prongs, are a popular style. Rough diamonds also offer a modern twist to a ring. • Classic: Three-stone and solitaire settings offer a timeless look. Other classic styles include pave and halo settings. 4. Determine the Budget • According the a 2011 jewelry study by The Knot, the bride views setting, stone cut and quality, and metal used as the most important aspects of a ring, whereas the groom focuses on stone quality, style and price. Each of these attributes factors into the price of the ring, so it helps to make sure the couple is aligned before shopping.
If you can, talk to your partner to gather details about metals, cuts and price points. • Platinum rings come in a variety of price points – with many costing less than $1,500 – so couples are sure to get the best value for the ring. Learn more at www.preciousplatinum.com.

Making Wedding Memories Where History Was Made (NAPS)—As more and more young (and old) couples seek novel wedding sites, there’s been a significant increase in making wedding memories where America’s history was made. And one such special place is Valley Forge, in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania … Philadelphia’s biggest and most affluent bedroom. Here, amidst the spectacular backdrop of 3,500-acre Valley Forge National Historical Park, the betrothed flock to Washington Memorial Chapel in search of open dates for exchanging vows. One of southeast Pennsylvania’s most popular and majestic wedding sites, the chapel’s rich decorative elements commemorate George Washington’s life and the nation’s earliest history. Nearby and nestled among 175 acres of sweeping meadows and rolling hills, the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove offers a memorable setting for magnificent weddings and receptions in any season. His historic home, set along the Perkiomen Creek in Audubon, PA, is a haven for birds and wildlife…and photographers. The wild pear orchard, 19th century fieldstone barn and winding creek set a stage for unforgettable wedding ceremonies in a charming, new outdoor pavilion. Green Lane Park, in the northwest corner of Montgomery County, comes by its name honestly. The beautiful view across its lake, from a quaint pavilion, creates an idyllic canvas for seasonal colors to complement any nuptials. Historic Graeme Park transports visitors and wedding parties back in time … to the 18th century. Its Keith House—once the residence of Colonial Pennsylvania governor Sir William Keith—was built in 1722 and has remained virtually intact since the latter part of that century. Its sweeping fields, pond and wetlands guarantee four-season-photogenic wedding albums. YOUR HEALTH Monessen Drug Summit to Address Prescription Drug Abuse The non-medical use of prescription drugs contributes to nearly 40,000 deaths and almost $200 billion in health-care costs annually. In Westmoreland County more than 64 drug over dose deaths were reported in the first nine months of the last year. While heroin accounts for a large portion of overdoses, Westmoreland County Coroner states that prescription pain killers such as Oxycontin and Vicodin, have taken over as leading killer. Our young people consider prescription drug abuse as a “low risk” way to get high. It has been found that those 12 years and older who abused pain relievers in the past year have obtained them from friends and family for free, including from their home medicine cabinets. While youths and young adults, aged 12 to 25, are the most frequent abusers; this problem affects all age groups, all ethnic groups, men, women and children, and it is destroying lives and killing people. America has a prescription drug abuse problem that’s affecting families and communities all across the nation. The Practice of K. Gosai & A.J. Gandhi, MD; Monessen School District; Monongahela Valley Hospital; Jefferson Regional Medical Center; District Attorney John Peck; Steve Kaufman Department of Justice; Kenneth Bacha Westmoreland County Coroner; Colleen Hughes Westmoreland Drug and Alcohol Commission; Dr. Yesh Navalgund and www.dnapain.com and Supervisory Special Agent Robert Hill, DEA are putting together multiple programs to raise awareness to this epidemic that continues to spread. The ever growing problem of prescription drug abuse and addiction is increasing in the Mon Valley region affecting the lives of our youth as well as their friends and families. We invite you to come and learn how it is still affecting you in ways that may not be so apparent. Please call 724-483-6300 for more information. The Monessen Drug Summit will be held on Wednesday, February 27 at Monessen High School at 6:30 p.m. The following individuals are slated to speak: • Robert Hill, Special Agent DEA • Steve Kaufman, Department of Justice • Kenneth Bacha, Westmoreland County Coroner • Ashley- real life experience • John Peck, Westmoreland County District Attorney • Dr. Yesh Navalgund, DNA Advanced Pain Treatment Center • Colleen Hughes, Westmoreland Drug and Alcohol Commission

Monongahela Valley Hospital Introduces New Concept in Joint Replacement Surgery Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) is changing the way patients and their families think about and experience joint replacement surgery with the introduction of The Orthopedic Institute at Monongahela Valley Hospital. The Orthopedic Institute is a comprehensive program that is based on a proven national model for hip and knee replacements. The program is structured around the fundamental principle of wellness. “This is not your typical hospital program or hospital stay,” said Thomas F. Brockmeyer, M.D. Ph.D., medical director of the Institute. Dr. Brockmeyer is one of three orthopedic surgeons who, along with the administrative and clinical team at MVH developed this innovative program to improve outcomes and provide a superior experience for individuals having hip or knee replacement surgery. Scott L. Baron, M.D., who is has an outstanding reputation for total hip and knee replacements, and Ari E. Pressman, M.D., whose areas of expertise include total hip and knee replacements as well as revision joint replacements, and Richard Mitchell, M.D., whose area of expertise is in the diagnosis and treatment of injuries to the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle, partner with Dr. Brockmeyer at the Orthopedic Institute. “First and foremost, we do not see our patients as being sick,” Dr. Brockmeyer explained. “Instead, we see our patients as healthy individuals who are coming to the hospital because they have hip or knee pain, and want to live a better quality of life by having joint replacement surgery.”

Be in the Know About Medicare Part B By Martin Keegan Social Security District Manager in Pittsburgh, PA
You may already know that Medicare is a medical insurance program for people who are 65 or older and for people who are disabled at any age. Some people are covered only by one type of Medicare; others opt to pay extra for more coverage. Understanding Medicare can save you money. If you’re eligible for and want to be covered by Medicare Part B medical insurance, now is the time to sign up. The general enrollment period for Medicare Part B runs from January 1 through March 31. Before you make a decision about general enrollment, here is some useful information. There are four parts to Medicare: Parts A, B, C and D. Part A helps pay for inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing care, hospice care, and other services. Part B helps pay for doctors' fees, outpatient hospital visits, and other medical services and supplies not covered by Part A. Part C allows you to choose to receive all of your health care services through a managed health care organization. These plans, known as Medicare Advantage Plans, may help lower your costs of receiving medical services, or you may get extra benefits for an additional monthly fee. You must have both Parts A and B to enroll in Part C. And Part D is the Medicare Prescription Drug Program. There is a monthly premium for Medicare Part B. In 2013, the standard premium is $104.90. Some highincome individuals pay more than the standard premium. Your Part B premium also can be higher if you do not enroll during your initial enrollment period, or when you first become eligible. There are exceptions to this rule.
For example, you can delay your Medicare Part B enrollment without having to pay higher premiums if you are covered under a group health plan based on your own current employment or the current employment of any family member. If this situation applies to you, you have a “special enrollment period” in which to sign up for Medicare Part B, without paying the premium surcharge for late enrollment. This rule allows you to: • Enroll in Medicare Part B at any time while you are covered under a group health plan based on your own current employment or the current employment of any family member; or • Enroll in Medicare Part B during the eight month period that begins following the last month your group health coverage ends, or following the month employment ends, whichever comes first. If you receive disability benefits and have coverage from a working family member, the same rules apply. If you live in one of the 50 states or Washington D.C. and you’re already receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits or railroad retirement payments, you will be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B automatically. However, because you must pay a premium for Part B coverage, you have the option of turning it down. If you don’t enroll in Medicare Part B when you first become eligible to apply and you don’t fall under the special enrollment period, you'll have to wait until the general enrollment period, which is January 1 through March 31 of each year. At that time, you may have to pay a higher Medicare Part B premium. For more information about Medicare, visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) website at www.medicare.gov. Or read our publication on Medicare at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10043.html.

School News...School News Charleroi School District Holds Security Meeting By Kyra Bergman
The Community Room at the Charleroi Area High School was standing room only for a Parent Council meeting on January 9, 2013 to discuss school security. Charleroi Superintendent Dr. Brad Ferko and district security director Chief Mike Kresich led a discussion and answered questions. Dr. Ferko explained additional cameras had been added so that every car coming onto campus can be monitored and several other new security measures were being discussed by district officials such as a swipe card system to secure doors and badges for all employees. A system that locks all school building doors automatically is also being considered. However, Ferko noted that students move from the high school to the building that contains the auditorium and gymnasium for classes frequently throughout the day; this could cause difficulties for an automatic locking system. “We‘re not reacting because of what occurred. We do have a crisis plan and we have done an active shooter drill.” Ferko said. “District officials do not want a knee-jerk reaction to Sandy Hook, but a well-thought-out plan.” Chief Kresich said each classroom teacher is equipped with a flip chart, crisis response handbook detailing what to do in a number of different emergency situations including a hostage situation, a driving-by shooting, and a health emergency among numerous others. Kresich is a member of the Charleroi Regional Police Dept. He said the district campus is located in Fallowfield Twp., which currently has no police force. But he said regional police could be on campus in two minutes in the event of an emergency. Kresich also noted that a number of officers have children in the district. Parents expressed a great deal of concern over the fact that the campus includes three schools but Kresich is the only one who patrols the buildings. One local mother stated that she wouldn’t mind seeing the school locked down like a prison if it meant her children were safe. Another suggested raising the school tax to get funds for increased security measures and personnel but a third Charleroi resident countered that raising taxes might help increase school safety but could make it difficult for some less fortunate families to keep their children fed. Dr. Ferko was eager to take suggestions from the community about what they wanted to see happen in the schools. Kresich added that he wanted the parents to feel involved in the process.
