10th Annual MVH/Lois Orange Ducoeur Breast Cancer Walk Event Celebrates Survivors, Remembers Loved Ones More than 400 participants — including these breast cancer survivors — filled the Charleroi Market House on October 12 for the 10th Annual MVH/Lois Orange Ducoeur Breast Cancer Walk. “It’s more than just a walk now, people really look forward to this event,” said MVH Director of Fund Development, Melissa Marion, who led the committee organizing the event. “People come to honor their loved ones, they come to walk in support of survivors and each other; they walk as co-workers and families, plus they get more and more creative with their pink outfits. I think there is a real sense of community here.” Proceeds from the annual one- or two-mile fun walk benefit Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Charles L. & Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center. At press time, the total raised reached $14,000, and donations are still arriving. The Breast Cancer Walk was created to honor the memory of Lois Orange Ducoeur, who lost her battle with cancer in 1965 at age 54. The Ducoeur family operated two stores in Charleroi for 118 years. Charleroi Rotary Club Distributes Dictionaries to Students Continuing an ongoing tradition, members of the Charleroi Rotary Club presented dictionaries to third graders at the Charleroi Elementary Center. Rotary Club members Steve Arnowitz, John Helfenstein, Donna Ramusivich, Walt Bianchi, and Diane Bianchi visited the building on September 25, 2013. They presented over 100 dictionaries to the students in all third grade classrooms. The Charleroi Rotary Student of the Month program for the 2013-2014 school year will begin in October. Nominations for this honor are made by school district personnel. Each month a senior student from Charleroi High School is invited to attend one of the regular meetings along with his or her parents. The student receives a certificate of recognition and a check for $50.00. The Charleroi Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at noon at the Back Porch restaurant. New members are welcome. VINTAGE COSTUME JEWELRY EVENT The West Newton Public Library is presenting “Vintage Costume Jewelry - Fabulous Fakes” presented by Mary Waltz. Mrs. Waltz will explain the history of costume jewelry and the stones that were used to bring these fabulous pieces to life. She will have on display her collection of over 500 brooches and will discuss some key points in the manufacturer of some of these pieces. Three Local Companies Recognized for Exemplary Giving and Service with WCCF’s Charles C. Keller Excellence Award for Corporate Philanthropy The Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2013 Charles C. Keller Excellence Award for Corporate Philanthropy. This years recipients are Washington Financial Bank (large category), Rose Plastic (medium category), and Beechie’s Place (small category). All three companies will be recognized for their generosity at the WCCF’s annual Philanthropy Banquet on Thursday, November 21 at the Hilton Garden Inn at Southpointe. Washington Financial President & Washington Financial Bank’s history of phiCEO Brian Smith lanthropy spans decades, long before its formal charitable giving program was established. Since the inception of its giving program, the Bank has donated nearly $5 million to support health and human service needs, community development projects, and education. OCTOBER GATHERING FOR THE ATHENE CLUB OF CHARLEROI The October meeting of the Athene Club of Charleroi was held on October 11 in the Alumni Room on the Charleroi Area High School Campus. Mrs. Bonnie Daylong, club president, extended a warm welcome to the members and shared the poem entitled "Autumn Once Again" by Marilyn Lott. She then invited the members to enjoy a luncheon provided by the school cafeteria. The guest for the day was Becky Hammond who relocated to Dunlevy, PA from the state of Texas. Mrs. Hammond is a Pampered Chef sales consultant. She liked their products and enjoyed using them so much, that she decided to join the team. Pampered Chef is a company providing homemakers with new and inventive small kitchen appliances. She likes training her team and watching them grow in their business. She says that "every time she goes to work she ends up at a party." Also at the meeting, Mrs. Ruth Adele Corrin announced that the Christmas Party would be held at the Mon Valley Country Club on Friday December 13.

Fraternal Order of Eagles to Launch New Aerie and Auxiliary in Washington The Fraternal Order of Eagles aims to bring 115 years of history and international influence to the Washington community as plans are currently underway to institute a chapter in the town. Main St. Representatives of the Eagles will be on hand to meet with prospective members and provide background information on the group and what it aims to bring to the Washington community. Each open house is open to the general public. Guests may drop in at any time during the three-hour window. Festive "Santa Trolley" Event at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum A very popular and unique way to see Santa will begin on Friday, November 29 when Santa trades in his sleigh for an antique streetcar to kick off "Santa Trolley" at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum. During Santa Trolley, children take a trolley ride with Santa and make sure that he has their Christmas list, while parents and grandparents enjoy caroling and the scenic view from a beautifully restored vintage streetcar. Charleroi - "Revive and Restore" Group of Concerned Citizens Unite to Try and Better the Community Early this year Charleroi Borough Council approved, with direction and guidance from Borough Manager Donn Henderson, the “Revive 2016” Program. This effort is aimed at identifying negative community trends and develop strategies to alter these trends. Soon thereafter, the primary election team of Debbie Buck, Larry Celaschi, John Mollenauer, Terry Newstrom and Paul Pivovarnik, initiated their “Restore Charleroi” Plan. The “Revive and Restore” image for Charleroi continues to gain momentum. A number of local organizations and volunteers are already stepping forward to advance improvements in code enforcement, blighted properties, drug activities, street/alleys clean-up, and more. "We no longer wish to be tagged as a culture of acceptance; we will make every effort to improve areas of decay and safety," says Charleroi Mayoral candidate, John Mollenauer.

Ringgold Hockey Announces 2014 Fundraiser Donors Will Have a Chance to Win Money Every Day of the Year! Ringgold Hockey has announced that they will be having its First Annual Calendar Ticket Sale. Each calendar has a three digit number on it that is good for all of 2014. If that number comes out straight in the Pennsylvania Lottery evening daily number, you will win the amount posted on the calendar for that day. There will be a potential winner every day! The calendars will be sold for a donation of $30 each and all proceeds from the sale go to Ringgold Hockey. Since Ringgold Hockey is considered a club sport, the school district doesn’t provide any financial support to the team. The players have to buy all their own equipment (roughly $1,000 for each player) and pay for their ice time (a one hour practice costs $260). This year Ringgold Hockey has expanded to include a Middle School Team, a Junior Varsity Team and a Varsity Team. We’re asking for help for our community! Mon Valley YMCA to Host "Super Saturday Family Day" On Saturday November 9, the Mon Valley YMCA will host "Super Saturday Family Day!" Beck Family Thanks the Community for Successful Fundraiser On October 20, 2013, a pasta dinner was held at St. Damien of Molokai Church in Monongahela to support Devin Beck in his fight against Devic's Disease (neuromyelitis optica). The outpouring support from Devin's friends, family, soccer players from Charleroi and Ringgold, St Damien of Molokai Parishioners, The Beck Family - (l-r) Devin, Angela, MCRS students, and local Jason, Bob, and Andrea Beck community members resulted in an outstanding fundraiser. Many businesses also contributed including Bartolottas Giant Eagle, Hills Restaurant, Applebees, Kennywood and more. Many people donated time, food, gifts, and baskets to be raffled off and others worked tirelessly to organize and run the event. The entire experience was uplifting to Devin and his family as they witnessed such wonderful people working so hard and cheerfully, along with the many young teenage volunteers enthusiastically serving the food and cleaning the hall at the end of the event. Devin has made significant progress and is being home schooled with anticipation he will be able to return to school soon. The Family of Devin Beck would like to offer their sincere thanks to all who supported the event. Devin and his family greatly appreciate all the thoughts and prayers which has kept his spirits up and supported his unwavering positive attitude towards fighting this disease. To all those involved in the corn hole tournament, pasta dinner, and ticket sales, the Beck Family will be forever grateful. WSO Seeks Student Musicians for Young Artist Competition Application Deadline is November 15 Washington County school students in 7th - 12th grades now have a way to showcase their instrumental musical talent to a large audience. The annual Washington Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition offers any serious music students the opportunity to apply, audition, and possibly win an opportunity to perform a solo with the WSO at its February concert and receive a $500 cash prize. The 2013 Young Artist Competition is currently accepting applications until November 15 for the December 17 audition competition. All interested music students may apply on-line on the website at www.washsym.org by November 15. The competition will allow the students an opportunity to perform for a panel of musicians who will judge and grade the competitors, offering feedback for continuous quality improvement and development. The selected winner will then play his or her solo selection with the WSO at its February 8, 2014 concert. Past student winners have played their favorite music on piano, cello, vibrophone, and even oboe. Monongahela Valley Hospital and Auxiliary Team up with Police to Fingerprint Local Children You see their pictures every day on fliers that arrive in the mail and on community bulletin boards. In an effort to help parents and law enforcement authorities locate their children if they disappear, the Community Relations Department at Monongahela Valley Hospital and the Auxiliary of MonVale Health Resources Inc. have teamed up with local police departments to fingerprint kindergarten students in school districts throughout the midMonongahela Valley.
How Fingerprints Can Find a Child If a child is missing, law enforcement officials can scan the child's fingerprints into the National Crime Information Center database. These fingerprints can then be used to help locate the child in a variety of ways. For example if a child whose parents are divorced is taken by the non-custodial parent and the child loses contact with the custodial parent, the two could be reunited when the child turns 16 and applies for a driver’s license. When the Department of Motor Vehicles scans the teen’s fingerprint, it is sent to the National Crime Information Center. The fingerprint would match the record of a missing child and teen and parent could be reunited. Likewise, if a teen runs away and is picked up for a minor crime such as shoplifting, when he or she is fingerprinted by authorities, the prints would be sent to the National Crime Information Center, it would show that the teen is a runaway and a reunion with parents could occur. These types of reunions occur largely due to advances in technology, increased education, continued collaboration between law enforcement agencies and programs such as that of Monongahela Valley Hospital and its Auxiliary that provide fingerprinting for children. The Child Registry Identification Program was introduced at area schools in the fall of 1989. It is estimated that nearly 25,000 kindergarten students have been registered since that time. NEWS FROM THE GREATER MONESSEN HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Greater Monessen Historical Society would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Westmoreland County Day of Giving 2013 and supported the society. The Annual Fund Campaign and membership renewal drive is underway. Membership is based on a calendar year of January to December and includes four issues of the “Valley Historian” newsletter. Membership is $15 for an individual, $20 for a family and $50 for a business. The annual Holiday Open House celebration will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2013. Santa will be present to greet the visitors and have his photo taken with them starting at 1 PM. Refreshments will be served. The Monessen Schools Exhibit is available for viewing at the Heritage Museum on Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM until 3 PM. Geocaching Program at Mingo Creek County Park The Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering a Geocaching program at Mingo Creek County Park on Saturday, November 16. We will meet at 11:00 AM at the Park Office. This is a great opportunity to discover Geocaching, and learn the basics of this fun, recreational activity. Join us as we search for hidden treasures (caches) in Mingo Creek Park using a handheld Global Positioning Device (GPS). Be the first to reach the final destination to win the “cache prize”! We will have a limited number of GPS units to utilize, but if you have a handheld device in which you can enter latitude and longitude coordinates, let us know upon registration and bring it with you! Pre-registration is required and can be made by calling the Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation office at 724-228-6867. There is a $1 fee for this program. Charleroi Area Historical Society Hosts Presentation on the Whiskey Rebellion Charleroi Area Historical Society (CAHS) President Beth Perret welcomed everyone to the October meeting, gave a few announcements, and noted that 2013 was the 40th anniversary of the Historical Society. The speaker at the October Meeting was Mr. Clay Kilgore, Director of the Washington County Historical Society and the Bradford House, as speaker for the evening. Kilgore gave an interesting presentation titled, “Digging for the Whiskey Rebellion”. He utilized a few pictures and a short video to showcase the content of his educational offering to those attending. He elaborated on further comprehension about the historical times and what led up to the implementation of the excise tax on distilled spirits and other things that happened before, after and during the Whiskey Rebellion. After the presentation, there was a short business meeting in which a few items were taken care of: The November Thanksgiving-Christmas meeting will be held at Rego’s Restaurant in Charleroi this year, a luncheon, with many auction and door prize items to be presented. RSVP is recommended by contacting Ms. Perret or other Program Committee officer. 2014 dues are expected January 1st and before May 1st during the Society’s Reorganization period. The first reorganizational Program meeting for 2014 will be a celebration of the 124th Birthday of Charleroi (2015 – 125th Birthday) and of Saint Patrick’s Day; The next Monongahela Historical Society Meeting, November 21st, will have Terry Necciai speaking about Historic Districts with his work, experiences and involvement in helping to officially place Charleroi’s on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, and the public is welcome to all events so noted. A raffle and refreshments provided by Ms. Perret, Leota Voelker and Nikki Sheppick for the Social that followed the evening’s historical and educational meeting took place.

Mon Valley Resident Presents His President Kennedy Memorabilia for School Exhibit 50th Commemoration of the Assassination, November 22, 2013 Stephen V. Russell, a Pennsylvania educator for 42 years and recently retired Belle Vernon Area Superintendent of Schools, will present a collection of President John F. Kennedy memorabilia from his campaigns for elected office as well as items related to Kennedy’s assassination 50 years ago this November. Mr. Russell has archived Kennedy artifacts since his volunteer work with the Kennedy campaign as a sixth grade student. Russell also attended the Inauguration of President Kennedy on January 20, 1961 in Washington, D.C. Parts of the Russell collection will be on display at East Allegheny High School Library on Thursday, November 14 with each social studies class invited to review the collection and pose questions to the presenter. Kennedy political buttons, flyers, brochures, and postcards along with photo albums of international trips taken by President Kennedy owned previously by a Kennedy secret service agent will be exhibited. While viewing the collection audio speeches of President Kennedy will play continually. Superintendent of East Allegheny Schools, Roger D’Emidio, arranged for the presentation to the students to acknowledge the national remembrance of President Kennedy’s contribution to the growth of our American democracy and expose students to the history of this tragic loss of our nation’s gifted leader. The public is invited to view the collection in the evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM November 14 at the East Allegheny High School Library.

The Mrs. Claus Club Provides Cancer Patients with Comfort Baskets The Mrs. Claus Club of Southwestern PA is celebrating seven years of helping women, men and children with cancer by providing them with "comfort baskets". The comfort baskets provide hope and offer a support system designed to provide a sense of normalcy during their battle with cancer. There are two different types of comfort baskets. Included in our "Believe" basket is a voucher for a custom designed wig for those undergoing chemotherapy treatments. Our "Sunshine" basket is specifically created to meet each recipient’s needs includes such items as skin care kits, cancer cookbooks, inspirational and wellness trinkets. The Mrs. Claus Club is hosting our annual fundraising celebration on Friday, November 8 at the Bentleyville Social Hall. The event features a live auction, raffles, silent auction, and we are currently seeking donated items to be used as auction items. Any gift, service, certificate, or company merchandise will be placed for auction on November 8. Monetary donations are welcome and 100% of those funds will be used to purchase items for the comfort baskets (minimum value $250). Corporate and individual sponsorships made in honor or memory of loved ones will be acknowledged at our celebration and in our annual newsletter. Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates Attend Program by Blue Angel Pilot and Charleroi Native The October meeting of the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates was called to order by Commanding Officer William Hess, followed by the playing of the Navy Hymn; George Diehl gave the opening prayer; and Pam Silbaugh led the group with the pledge to the flag. Executive Officer Barry Anders reported that 17 shipmates attended a reception honoring U.S. Navy Blue Angel Pilot, Lt. Mark Tedrow, a graduate from Charleroi High School, at the auditorium of the Charleroi High School on Friday morning, September 27. Lt. Tedrow gave a resume of his life after high school and showed a CD Video of the Blue Angels. He presented to the Mon Valley Shipmates an autograph glossy photo of the Blue Angels, plus all the shipmates receives a smaller copy. In other news A card was received from Ringgold Elementary School South, commending their appreciation of the flag committee and their flag presentation at the school on September 24th. Marshall Lignian reported that 21 schools have been contacted and 4 have been visited to present the flag program so far this school year. More help is needed, so please consider giving us a hand and help out. This program is
mainly for the 5th grade students and any school administrator interested in having this program held at their school are requested to contact Marshall Lignian. The program is also available for any adult organization. A letter from Eagle Scout Jonathan Baker was received, along with a photograph of the Army Tank in Monessen City Park that he refurbished as his community service to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. He thanked the M-MVSM for their monetary donation to help him in this undertaking. Jim Caserta submitted his resignation as chairperson of the Christmas party due to medical reason. After a discussion and trying to get a new chairperson was unsuccessful, it was moved and approved to forego the Christmas party this year. Marshall Lignian also reported that the Wreaths Across America program is here and explained the program. It was approved to donate $750 to the WAA program again this year. Joe Tencer commented that his family participated in the laying of the wreaths last year and that it is an event that everyone should try to attend. The new Veteran Monument in Pittsburgh is available for visiting and the M-MVSM is honored to have Sally Stephenson's name engrave on it.

NEWS FROM THE DONORA HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum, located at the intersection of Sixth and McKean in the heart of Donora recently hosted two successful events. A good time was had by all at the discussion and book signing at the Donora Public Library on Saturday, September 21 that featured the most recent book on Donora titled, “Steel Town Showdown.” This book was written by Donora resident, Historical Society member and library board member, David Lonich. Mr. Lonich discussed his book of historical fiction, the story of which is based on factual events in and around the steel mill of Donora in 1907 as told through fictional characters, and how he used Primary Sources to do the historical research to help fill in the historical facts. All proceeds from book sales benefited the Donora Library and Donora Historical Society and will continue to do so. If you missed the book signing and would like a book, please stop by the museum to purchase your copy. Our historical presentation that took place on Monday, October 7 featured Belle Vernon student Carmen Sawa and her teacher Ross Farmer, who presented her award winning film on the 1948 Smog that was used for the 2013 Pennsylvania History Day Competition in the video documentary category. Miss Sawa did her research at the museum under the guidance of our curator and her video advanced her to the National competition. The Donora Historical Society takes great pride in helping students of all ages with research on Donora topics
through our Teaching with Primary Sources program which goes along with our Mission Statement: The mission of the Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum is to preserve, research, interpret and promote Donora history through cooperative continuing educational relationships with individuals and institutions; focusing on causes and effects of the 1948 “smog” tragedy and its impact on global environmental concerns and issues. Please join us on Monday, November 4 at 7:00 PM for our historical presentation that will feature Mr. Dennis Ballas, who will discuss the 1918 Influenza Epidemic. Mr. Ballas is a retired teacher from the California area and has written a couple of well received books on the subject. This will be our last formal presentation of 2013. Cal U Theatre and Dance Presents “The Mouse That Roared” The fall’s second presentation by California University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Theatre and Dance showcases the talents of Cal U’s newest crop of aspiring actors and technicians. First-year students will appear onstage and work behind the scenes to present "The Mouse That Roared," a satirical Cold War comedy based on the 1955 novel by Leonard Wibberley and adapted for the stage by Christopher Sergel. The madcap plot takes off when Gloriana XII, ruler of the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, concocts a plan to address the duchy’s economic woes: declare war on the most powerful nation in the world. Longbows and arrows, Q-bombs and mad professors combine with a love story to create a delightfully funny tale that guarantees a jolly good time for the audience. Curtain time is 8 p.m. Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, with shows at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Nov. 2. All performances are in the Gerald and Carolyn Blaney Theatre in Steele Hall. Cost is $12 for adults, seniors and children. Students with valid CalCards are admitted free; they must leave a $5 deposit that will be returned if they attend the performance. Leach has been involved in ministry since 1969, and is a retired pastor. She served on 8 different boards of directors and has been a volunteer with many non-profits and faith-based organizations since 1969. She was in restaurant management for 13 years and enjoys cooking. She has also been involved in direct sales and network marketing since 1968. Leach is the owner of Common Scents Health Research & Wellness Centers in Donora. She lives with her husband Norman and they have 3 sons and 6 granddaughters.

He was also present at University Park in State College, PA on Saturday, November 12, when Penn State defeated Michigan, 43-40, in the longest game ever for the Nittany Lions. Ringgold Announces 2013 Hall of Fame Class The Ringgold Rams Club Hall of Fame Class of 2013 Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, November 2 in the Ringgold High School cafeteria with a reception starting at 5:30 PM and dinner at 6:00 PM. NELSON WALKER, an outstanding defensive tackle for the Rams football team, Nelson received honors as a Big 10 Conference all-star and Big 33 selection. School News...School News Pumpkins Make Story Book Characters Come Alive Over the past few weeks, students in Miss Evancho’s kindergarten class from Perry Elementary in the Frazier School District were learning about the characters in their favorite story books. As a result, the class fell into the fall spirit by partaking in a pumpkin decorating activity regarding their favorite book character. In order to create their pumpkin characters, a local business kindly donated a pumpkin for each student. Students were encouraged to identify the title and author of their book and were given directions to decorate their pumpkins. This was a home project and the students did a fantastic job!! The pumpkins and books were displayed in the hallway of the school for students and others to enjoy.
Homeschool Outdoor Classroom in Mingo Park: Dissecting Owl Pellets The Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering a Homeschool Outdoor Classroom at Mingo Creek County Park on Thursday, November 14 at the Park Office. Two sessions are available; Session I will begin at 10:00 AM and Session II will begin at 1:00 PM. We will have a hoot of a time learning about these majestic, predatory birds. Students will learn about the types of owls that live in our area, listen to calls, and dissect their very own owl pellet. Owl pellets and materials will be provided. Please note that this program is designed for homeschooled children ages 5 to 11. Pre-registration is required and can be made by calling the Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation office at 724-228-6867. There is a fee of $2 per pellet. YOUR HEALTH Additional Vaccine Offers Added Protection This Flu Season Trivalent and Quadrivalent Flu Vaccine Available at Dr. Molinda’s Office “I recommend that all of my patients at high risk for the flu to be vaccinated on a yearly basis,” said Laurie S. Molinda, M.D., a doctor of internal medicine. “Vaccination helps to prevent hospitalization due to complications, such as pneumonia, as well as to prevent children from missing school, parents from missing work, and the spread of the virus to older or immune-compromised patients that could become seriously ill if infected." According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaccination is the single best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against the flu. They recommend everyone ages 6 months and older should get the annual flu vaccine. It takes approximately two weeks after vaccination for your body to develop an immune response. By getting the vaccination early, you will be protected all season long. Flu viruses are constantly changing, and different flu viruses circulate and cause illness each season. The annual flu vaccine is updated each year to protect against the flu viruses that
research indicates will be most common. This is why everyone needs a flu vaccine every year. Vaccination is especially important for people who are at high risk for complications from flu, and for people who live with or care for someone who is at high risk. Some of those people include the following: • Pregnant women • Children younger than 5, but especially children younger than 2 years old • People 50 years of age and older • People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions, such as chronic respiratory (such as asthma), cardiovascular disease (except hypertension), or kidney, liver, neurologic, hematologic, or metabolic disorders (such as diabetes mellitus); • People who are immunosuppressed • People who are or will be pregnant during the influenza season • Children who are 6 months through 18 years old and are on longterm aspirin therapy • People who are morbidly obese

Molinda will have both flu vaccines available in her Finleyville office. “The quadrivalent vaccine may prove more popular for children than their parents since youngsters tend to catch the newly added strain of influenza more often,” explained Dr. Molinda. “The four-in-one vaccine is so new that it makes up only a fraction of the nation’s supply of vaccine. Valley Seniors Club Announces Upcoming Bus Trips The Valley Seniors Club meets at the Riverside Place, located at 303 Chamber Plaza in Charleroi, each month on the 4th Tuesday at 1 PM. Currently, we are accepting reservations for the following bus trips: Miracle of Christmas show at the Millennium Theater in Lancaster November 22, 2013. We will have a homemade, family style, all-you-can-eat lunch. Next we will go to the Intercourse Canning Company where you can sample a variety of PA Dutch canned goodies and then off to the Pretzel, where all of their pretzels are still hand twisted. You can even try your hand at twisting a pretzel. Sit back and wonder as the Biblical story of the birth of Christ comes to life on Sight & Sound's giant wraparound stage. The Christmas show will not be performed in 2014. It also includes a boxed meal, taxes, and gratuities and transportation. Cost is $159. A $25 deposit is due with reservation. Open to the public. “Sinner’s Only” Men’s Breakfast Club of Pricedale Union Church The “Sinner’s Only” Men’s Breakfast Club of Pricedale Union Church, located at 203 Johnson Avenue in Belle Vernon, began their monthly series of breakfasts in September. These breakfasts feature testimonies and ministry reports from a wide variety of speakers ranging from former convicted felons to Messianic Jewish Rabbis! Their kickoff breakfast for the 201314 season featured Rev. Jim Kensinger from Johnstown. Pastor Kensinger was at one time on the FBI’s “Most Wanted” list, but through the intervention of the Holy Spirit in his life, he is now an ordained minister who also conducts a prison ministry. His personal testimony kept the men spellbound. Kensinger’s presentation was followed up by Pricedale Union’s own guitarist, vocalist and captivating orator, George Wilson. George, along with giving us a vocal number with his guitar, also delivered a captivating message on “Time, and the use of it.” If you missed these first two breakfasts, you’ll not want to miss our coming attractions for the remainder of the year. Saturday, November 30, features Eric Johnson, the Unit Manager of a Maximum Security Prison. Mr. Johnson is an outstanding speaker whose testimony and the challenges of his ministry is a true tale that will amaze you! Saturday, January 25, features Pastor Ed Glover, founder and director of the Urban Impact Foundation of Pittsburgh. Rev. Glover recognized the multiple trials which children of urban communities such as Pittsburgh face, and he addresses these challenges. Saturday, February 22, meeting will feature the interesting story of Vernon “Chip” Rose, the chaplain of Moundsville State Prison in West Virginia. Rose, another distinguished speaker, has some prison stories which will put you in awe. Our breakfast group meets on the last Saturday of each month from September through May, with the exception of December. The group meets at 9:00 AM for the breakfast with that months featured speaker following the meal. We are usually dismissed between 11:00 and 11:30. There is no charge for the meal is prepared by our in house chef, John Mimidis, of the Two Brothers Sandwich and Ice Cream Shop in Belle Vernon. Men of all Christian faiths are invited to these meetings. An offering basket is passed to defray the cost of food and sometimes to help with traveling expenses for the speakers. The Laurelville Mennonite Church Center East of Mt. Pleasant was the location for 31 area women who attended a "life-changing" event during the weekend of September 20 – 22, 2013. The ladies who attended the retreat ranged in age from 13 to 104. (l-r) Dorothy Byrd from Donora, Cindy Graham from “Everybody took part in it, Carroll Township, Evelyn Robinson from Monessen, Millie from the youngest to the oldThomas from Monessen, Trudy Toson from Steubenville, est,” said Monessen Minister Carolyn Byrd from Pittsburgh, and Ginger Fyock from Millie Thomas. She added, Steubenville. “This is the first year that we included teenagers, and everybody we asked to sponsor a teen was more than willing to do so." The ladies had signed up for the retreat with Minister Thomas’ assistant Norva Lewis, from Belle Vernon, through the ministry, “Embraced by His Love”, in Monessen. There were also some women who attended from out of state. During church service at the retreat, the ladies had partners in communion. Minister Millie Thomas and Norva Lewis Minister Thomas said she saw the enjoy friendly times together. ladies’ countenance change. "People were being set free," Lewis said. “It’s a journey up the hill to pray. At the conclusion of the trip, the process of getting rid of things from your past, if you want everything God ladies said they did not want to leave. Lillian Allen, age 104 said, “Sign me up has for you.” Everyone who attended the retreat for next year!” Held annually, ladies can look forenjoyed the lovely nature, and went up to the top of the mountain where it was ward to this trip again next year, the 3rd beautiful and peaceful. They made the week-end in September.
