Washington County Farm Bureau's (WCFB) annual Legislative Farm Tour was held August 22 at Destiny Hill Farm in Washington, PA. Owners Jim and Nancy Cameron, along with staff member Meagan Slates, explained to the crowd that they turned the family farm into a place for “Agritainment” and “Ag education.” "In the spring of 2011, farm was transformed into a lavender, fresh cut flower, and berry farm as well as a seasonal event center hosting weddings, large outdoor parties and business or organization events," Nancy Cameron said. The WCFB's Legislative Farm Tour is held each year on a different farm, showcasing the diversity of the farms in the region. "The farm tours are important because it gives an opportunity for local and state legislators to learn about the various forms of farming - as well as the needs of the farmers - in our county," said WCFB member Denise Lewellyn.

Charleroi Rotary Club Has Busy Month Annual Picnic, Bocce Tournament and Meetings Held

The Charleroi Rotary Club held its yearly Family Picnic and Bocce Tournament on Tuesday, August 20, 2013. This annual event was once again hosted at the Carroll Township home of Vince and Charlotte Vaccaro. Members enjoyed lively, spirted games of Bocce, as well as delicious food and beverage favorites. A highlight of the evening was the announcement that members Vince Vaccaro and John Helfenstein were recognized as Paul Harris Fellows for their substantial donations to the Rotary Foundation. The Foundation is the charitable arm of Rotary International. In addition to the regular weekly meetings for the Rotary Club, members Diane and Walt Bianchi, John Helfenstein, Mike Rupert and Steve Arnowitz continued to work on a new website for the Charleroi Rotary Club. Once the website is online, members will be able to post pictures and news regarding upcoming club meetings and Rotary International events.

On August 28th, the monthly joint meeting for the Charleroi, Belle Vernon, and Donora clubs was held at the Back Porch Restaurant. Charleroi club member Donna Vesely spoke about Rotary International's newest effort to help raise money for research in regard to Alzheimer's Disease by sharing information that was given to Rotarians at the International Convention in Madrid, Spain. Rotary International has helped to almost fully eradicate Polio due to its constant efforts by providing vaccinations for children in poverty stricken areas throughout the world. The organization now wants to channel that same type of energy into the fight against Alzheimer's. The Charleroi Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at the Back Porch restaurant. Mingo G.I.F.T. Shoppe Registration During the upcoming holiday season, parents in the Ringgold community that may need assistance in purchasing toys for their children will have an opportunity to shop at the Mingo “G.I.F.T.” Shoppe. G.I.F.T. stands for Grace, Integrity, Faith and Trust. Parents will earn shopping credits just by registering their children. More credits can be earned by volunteering at the Shoppe. The Shoppe is being organized by Ringgold students Becca Podrosky and Allison Martin in conjunction with the Mingo Creek Presbyterian Church Mission Committee and the Finleyville Food Bank. American Legion Auxiliary Past Presidents and Fayette Salon Hold Combined Picnic Partners of the Fayette Salon #105 and the Washington, Fayette, and Greene County Past American Legion Auxiliary Presidents enjoyed their annual combined picnic on August 20 at the American Legion Post #954 in Jefferson. Each member brought a covered dish, a $10 Chinese auction gift and two Bingo prizes for an afternoon of fun and fellowship that was enjoyed by all. The dues for the 8/40 coming year were collected and a tentative schedule for the 2013 future meetings was shared but is subject to change. MON VALLEY LEATHERNECKS OCTOBER MEETING Marine Corps Ball Set for November 9 in Donora The Mon Valley Leathernecks meet the third Monday of each month at VFW Post 1409, Monongahela, PA at 1900 Hrs. The October meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 21. The Leathernecks have their annual Marine Corps Ball scheduled for Saturday, November 9 at 1800 hrs at the Donora Municipal Building. Heart disease is the number one killer in this country. Stroke ranks fourth and is the leading cause of severe disability. Cardiovascular disease affects more than one in every three adults. However, most people can take control of their heart health and reduce their risk. The first step is exercise! The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of moderate activity at least five days a week. Yet only 15 percent of American adults achieve that. Without regular physical activity, the body loses its ability to function well. In addition, for each hour of regular exercise, you can gain about two hours of additional life expectancy, even if you don't start exercising until middle age. Getting active doesn’t mean you have to sign up for the next marathon. Brisk walking is enough. Planning your week with exercise in mind is important. Schedule it on your calendar and treat it just as you would an important meeting. Getting active for 30 minutes is ideal, but if you’re having trouble finding a block of time, try splitting it up into three 10-minute or two 15-minute segments. Local Schools Are Encouraged to Participate Prior to the September meeting, 19 the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates gathered at Massafra Funeral Home and conducted the Two-Bell Services for Evo Renacci. At the meeting, XO Barry thanked all of these shipmates for their dedication to our departed sailors. The Shipmates received a letter from the Donora Smog Association inviting them to participate in a parade in Donora on October 29. Shipmate Marshall Lignian requested a short meeting of anyone interested in the School Flag program to be held immediately following the regular meeting. Eleven members stayed for this meeting and Marshall sent letters to 12 new schools that haven't been a part of the program. No responses have been received to date. The first presentation was held Sept. 18, at Madonna Catholic School. This program is mainly for the 5th grade students and any school administrator interested in having this program held at their school are requested to contact Marshall Lignian.

The California Area PA Historical Society sponsored a program ‘Preservation of Vintage Photographs, Textiles, and Paper’ on September 14 at at the historic Gallagher House in California, PA. Dr. Bonnie Reese, Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village curator and professor at California University of PA, presented methods on how to handle and to help preserve vintage perishable items including paper, photos, textiles, basketry, wood, and metal. Information shared during the program was about how to handle vintage items. It is very important to wash hands before touching vintage items, and to wear lightweight cotton gloves to keep the oils on our hands from depositing on the object. It is also advised to work in a clean and dry location, remove jewelry, and to avoid eating and chewing gum. Vintage items should not be stored in attics or basements where temperatures will fluctuate and exposure to dampness or molds could occur. A spare bedroom or linen closet is best for storage. Vintage letters and papers should be opened, scanned, placed flat in architectural mylar sleeves, numbered and identified using a pencil, placed in a folder, and then stored in boxes. They should be checked every few months to make sure they are safe from damage. Buffered tissue paper is best, but white tissue paper is acceptable if buffered is not available. Architectural mylar sleeves, and folders can be used to separate and store print and catalogs. Photos should be placed in mylar sleeves and can be

Rumpled tissue paper stuffed into vintage clothing will protect from wear on the stress points. Neutral colored cotton sheets can be used to separate and cover textiles that should be stored away from sunlight to avoid damage. A piece of twill tape with the crafters name, information, and date can be corner tacked to the item so its origin will be known and preserved The program finished with light refreshments followed by a walk through the Historical Society archives for a critique on storage and filing. Several who attended brought great old photographs to share. It was an excellent afternoon of learning for all who attended.

Schooner Center in Monessen Holds Fall Festival for Community
The Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce will host a luncheon event on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the Lombardi Conference Center at Monongahela Valley Hospital. Registration and networking begins at 11:30 AM and the event will conclude at 1:00 PM. The program will include a panel that will discuss the economies of Marcellus Shale and its supply chain. Joy Ruff from the Marcellus Shale Coalition will be among those on hand to take part in the discussion. This event is part of the “Shale Energy Series,” a cooperative effort among other Chambers of Commerce in the region including the MVRCC, The Washington County Chamber, the Pittsburgh North Chamber, the Pittsburgh Airport Area Chamber, and the South Hills Chamber of Commerce. The Schooner Center in Monessen held a Fall Festival on Saturday, September 7 in the Schooner Parking and was open to all residents of the Mon Valley who attended. The event was held as a fundraiser for the Schooner Youth Center, and the day was filled with games, food, a clown, singers, arts and crafts, hand-crafted jewelry. Also on hand were a variety of vendor and informational booths from Avon, The Pastor John Custer and his wife Monessen American Historical Society, Jethe enjoy the event at the Youth Center they own and operate. Pampered Chef, Celebrating Homes and Rebirth Ministries. And the Orchard Ladies Fellowship ran a flea market to raise money for their ladies’ group. Russell Johnson and his business at “No Bull Bar-BQ”, located at 51 in Smock, provided a selection of delicious food featuring BBQ chicken, pork, and ribs. Many donations were received by the committee and they would like to thank all of the generous attendees and vendors who participated.

The Martha Washing Garden Club met on September 17, 2013 on the grounds of the historic LeMoyne House in Washington, PA for a presentation on herbs by Kathy Wells. Methods for drying herbs, herbal sachets, making teas and infusions, herbal vinegars, herbal bouquets, and using herbs in cooking were demonstrated with a tasty pasta salad completed in the demonstration added to the lunch menu. The Martha Washington Garden Club maintains the LeMoyne House gardens which consist of herbs, perennials, butterfly and pollinator plants, annuals, and bulbs. Monessen Halloween Parade Slated for October 24 In an attempt to make the Monessen Halloween Parade a larger event for the community, big changes are happening! This year's parade, run by the Monessen Community Development Corporation, and with the help of the Fire Department, will bring everyone together for a great evening of fall fun on October 24. The biggest change is the addition of prizes in numerous categories, with the hopes of folks getting more involved. Cement City Walking Tour
Downtown West Newton Inc. (DWNI) has 2 great items available to choose from this holiday season. Our historic West Newton calendar for 2014 is now available. The calendar can be purchased online at our website www.dwni.org or at Gary's Chuck Wagon on South Second St. and also at the Trail Information Center on Collinsburg Road. This super calendar has some wonderful never before seen photos of the town from the late 1920's through the 1940's. Each calendar is just a $10 donation and it is limited to 250 copies. In addition to the calendars we have our "Starry Night" sweatshirts for sale and they too can be purchased online. These sweatshirts mark our 12th year of our Christmas production, Miracle On Main Street. All proceeds from the sale of each item benefits Downtown West Newton Inc.
Our third annual Cement City Walking Tour will take place on Sunday, October 6. The tour will start at the museum at 1:00 PM with a photo presentation on Donora’s National Historic District – Thomas Edison’s Cement City, as well as the showing of artifacts and original blueprints during the construction from 1916 and 1917. A walking tour will follow in the Historic District to point out some of the various architectural details. The tour will conclude by going into an actual Cement City house to point out interior details with rooms restored to period. Light refreshments will be served. The presentation and walking tour are free but donations are gladly accepted. There is no Steelers game scheduled on this day. Town Hall Discussion the Donora Smog This year is the 65th anniversary of the 1948 Smog that was most recently featured on The Weather Channel’s series: “Weather That Changed The World”. In remembrance of the 20 people that lost their lives during that event, the Donora Historical Society and Donora Smog Committee are hosting a Town Hall Environment Conference; “Commemorating the 1948 Donora Smog Disaster - a seminal moment in environmental history” on Wednesday, October 30 at the Donora Borough Building located at Sixth Street and Meldon Avenue, just a half block from our museum. The one day environmental confer-
ence will focus on education, awareness, communication and the commemoration of that infamous Halloween weekend in 1948 which forever linked the town of Donora with the modern environmental movement. The target audience will be students from local middle schools, high schools, and universities, as well as educators, researchers, environmental groups, historians, scientists, and interested citizens. The day will conclude with a special evening screening of “Rumor of Blue Sky,” a primary resource documentary by filmmaker and Art Institute of Pittsburgh professor Andrew Maietta. “Rumor of Blue Sky” uses oral histories to tell the story of the smog disaster through the personal accounts of the people who lived through that tragic late October weekend in 1948. Andrew and Co-Producer Janet Whitney will be on hand to answer questions about their film. Rostraver Library Knitters Contribute to “Yarn Bombing” Initiative
Images of the Andy Warhol Bridge in downtown Pittsburgh showcases some of the colorful knitted and crocheted panels that were on display from the recent “Yarn Bombing.”
The Rostraver Library Knitters have played an important role in “Knit the Bridge”, the current project of the Fiber Arts Council which has resulted in Pittsburgh’s Andy Warhol Bridge being covered with colorful knitted and crocheted panels. More than 1,800 knitters from southwestern Pennsylvania, including the Rostraver Library knitters, have used thousands of yards of yarn to create the vivid panels which may now be seen on the bridge. One member of the Rostraver group, Sarah Trenk, took the required training and helped to install the panels on the bridge. The street art which uses colorful displays of knitted yarn and fiber is called “yarn bombing.” The Rostraver Knitters decided to yarn bomb their library to support the Pittsburgh project which calls attention to the arts, as well as Pittsburgh’s bridges. Under the guidance of Deborah Amore and Lois Kretchun, co-chairs of the local project, the knitters created hundreds of knitted and crocheted flowers, vines, leaves, and butterflies which now adorn the library. You can find them on the mailbox, the electronic sign, the lamp posts, the bell, as well as throughout the interior of the library. The knitters feel that their yarn bombing has helped to make the library a fun and exciting place to go. The Rostraver Knitters, under the leadership of Judy Yoskosky, was begun almost four years ago and meets weekly at the library. Monessen Schools Exhibit The “Monessen Schools” Exhibit continues at the Heritage Museum. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM until 3 PM. It will remain an exceedingly pink, family-oriented and fun event that raises money for local breast cancer patients, but there are a few subtle changes in store for the 10th Annual MVH/Lois Orange Ducoeur Breast Cancer Walk on Saturday, October 12. Along with a new logo, local cancer patients at Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Charles L. & Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center will now benefit from all the money raised from the popular annual pink fun walk. After nine years of planning the annual event, the Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce staff has handed over leadership of the walk to the hospital’s Office of Fund Development staff with the hopes of growing the event even larger than its present size. The Breast Cancer Walk was created to honor the memory of Lois Orange Ducoeur, who lost her battle with cancer in 1965 at age 54. The Ducoeur family operated Orange’s Gift store and Ducoeur Furniture Store in Charleroi for 118 years. The chamber’s Executive Director Deb Keefer and Financial Assistant Donna Angelo championed the event and the Ducoeur Family assisted on the planning committee. These key event planners as well as the past committee members remain on the planning committees. The team includes several breast cancer survivors. On October 12, Walk registration begins at the Charleroi Market House, 423 McKean Ave., at 9 AM and the walk begins at 10 AM. No preregistration is required but walkers are asked to make a $5 donation. The first 300 walkers donating or raising a minimum of $25 will receive a free commemorative bag. Historic Fredericktown Ferry Makes Final Run Paul Wroble, 81 years, piloted the Fredericktown Ferry for 6 years until he was injured last year. Paul worked as a riverboat captain for 47 years. Andrea Krill and Marge Krill came with Paul to enjoy a final ride.
The West Newton Little House Association will be hosting a Stuffed Pork Chop Dinner on Saturday, November 2 at Gary's Chuck Wagon Restaurant, 109 South 2nd Street, West Newton. The historic Fredericktown Ferry made its final run on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 after Fayette County Commissioners voted to close the Ferry. The decision was made at their May 2013 meeting due to dwindling ridership after the opening of the Bakewell Bridge on the Mon Fayette Expressway in July 2012. The Fredericktown Ferry on one of its “Fred” as the landmark Ferry is final runs across the Monongahela River. The Fredericktown Ferry was permanently affectionately known, was built in closed by the Fayette County Commissioners 1948 and is the last of the original on August 28, 2013. three cable driven ferries that crossed the Monongahela River in Washington County. The Fredericktown Ferry connected Fredericktown in Washington County with La Belle in Fayette County which are separated by approximately 400 ft. of water. It also replaced previous ferries dating back to the late 1700’s. The 60-foot long Fredericktown Ferry can hold up to 6 vehicles and approximately 100 riders per trip. At the cost of $2 per vehicle and 50¢ per pedestrian, it was a very economical and quick way to cross the Monongahela River. As Fayette and Ferry pilot Ron Columbia guides Fred safely Washington Counties share owneracross the Mon. ship, it will be up to both Counties to decide the Ferry’s fate. The Fredericktown Ferry is currently docked on the Fayette County side of the Monongahela River. Fayette County Commissioners voted on September 17, 2013 to advertise for proposals to dispose of the Ferry leaving open that it could be sold or scrapped. Scrap value for the 35 ton steel vessel would garner approximately $7,000. A Fredericktown citizens group would like to see the Fredericktown Ferry brought to the Washington County side and donated to Fredericktown/East Bethlehem Township to be used as part of a proposed historical museum for the area. Washington County Commissioners have yet to offer their input.

Pumpkin Patch Trolley Starts October 4 at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum Embrace the change of seasons and leap into fall with the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum’s annual Pumpkin Patch Trolley, which runs Friday through Sunday October 4-6, 11-13, 18-20, and 25-27. At the event, visitors will take a ride on an antique trolley to the pumpkin patch where children get to select their pumpkin and then decorate it at our new Education & Events Room. Families can take a tour and see trolleys and enjoy other kids’ activities including complimentary refreshments and games for children. The event runs 10 AM to 5 PM each day with the last ride to the pumpkin patch at 4:15 PM. Pumpkin Patch admission also includes unlimited rides on multiple trolleys and tours of the Trib Total Media Trolley Display Building (which houses 30 trolleys from all over the region). Displays include the photographic exhibits “Streetcar Stories of Washington County” and “Streetcar Suburbs: Linking Neighborhoods, Building Communities” as well as an introductory film on the Trolley Era. Visitors can also shop in the Museum Store. Kids can also explore play trolley car 225 and enjoy the Thomas and Chuggington play tables. Admission for Pumpkin Patch Trolley is $10 for adults; $9 for seniors (62+); $7 for kids (1-15); and free for kids under 1. Admission includes a pumpkin for each child; additional pumpkins are $2. New this year: tickets can be purchased for specific time periods in advance on-line at www.patrolley.org. In conjunction with the Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts Christmas Festival (Friday through Sunday, October 18 - 20 and Saturday and Sunday, October 26 - 27), the Museum will offer park and ride service from the Museum’s parking lot to the Washington County Fairgrounds. WCCF Kicks Off Annual Steelers Ticket Raffle The Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF) is raffling four Steelers tickets and limousine service to and from Heinz Field for the Sunday, November 17, 2013 game against the Detroit Lions. The game tickets, donated by the Observer-Reporter, are in section 535, row F (at the 50-yard line). Raffle tickets are $10 each. The winner will be determined by the first validated Pennsylvania Lottery number drawn at 7:00 PM on November 1, 2013. If the number drawn on this date is an unsold ticket, the winner will be determined by the next day’s 7 PM drawing until a winner is determined. Proceeds from the raffle benefit the WCCF’s Acorn Fund, which makes grants to local charities. Journey into Space with Washington Symphony Orchestra Outer space has held the mysteries that man has sought after for years. Journey there this October 12 without leaving your seat! The Washington Symphony Orchestra opens its 2013-14 season with “Space – The Final Frontier” on Saturday, October 12 at 8:00 PM at Trinity High School in Washington under the baton of conductor and music director Dr. Yugo Ikach. You’ll enjoy a premiere of a local composer’s music with accompanying video from the International Space Station. Dominic Carrola of Washington has written “Window Beyond Earth” for the WSO to debut at its opening concert. Winter Morning Pictures’ producer Ron Hankison collaborated with Carrola to put the International Space Station video with the piece. Besides the premiere of this music and video collaboration, the WSO’s audience will enjoy “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” as well as Holst’s The Planets. Music from the whimsical sci-fi fantasy series “Dr. Who” will showcase the unearthly sound of the theremin – an out of this world instrument. Concert-goers will also see an informational display on Joe Walker, a 1938 Trinity alumnus, 1942 Washington & Jefferson College alumnus, and Washington native who was one of the first men in outer space in the early 1960s. Three of his X-15 flights in 1963 exceeded 60 miles, entering "technical" outer space. As a result he logged a total of 32 minutes in space and was the first person to enter technical space twice. McGuffey School District has a Joe Walker Elementary School in honor of the local “astronaut.” Season tickets are still available for music fans who wish to enjoy all four regular WSO concerts at a $5 off each concert price, saving $20 per set of season tickets. To decide whether or not to grant a loan to a particular borrower there are many things taken into account. Does the buyer hold a steady job? How long have they been there? Is their monthly income sufficient to make payments, maintain the property and live? Do they have enough money to close the sale? How many other debts do they have? What are the loan balances and monthly payments? Do they make payments in a timely fashion? What is their credit score? Are there any judgments or bankruptcies in their past? How do we verify what the buyer says is actually true? Ultimately, based on the information sources available to lenders today, does this buyer appear to be someone the lender can trust to repay the debt with interest plus handle all of the normal financial obligations associated with homeownership? The second lender concern is the value of the property. You may have

wondered about the need for an appraisal. If you are the buyer you know that the sellers and the real estate professionals obviously think it is priced correctly. After all, if the property was listed for sale on the open market, didn’t the market establish the purchase price? The answer is “not necessarily”. The reality is that whatever type of property someone wants to mortgage, an appraisal will be ordered by the lender, including refinancing or a home equity loan. Keep in mind that the lender is being asked to risk someone’s SAVINGS, in this case, on a property they will never actually see. Therefore, they need acceptable assurance that in the unlikely event the buyer defaults, there is sufficient value remaining in the property to be able to sell it for enough money to satisfy the debt. The appraisal will be ordered by the lender through a third party company so that there is no possible communication or undue influence between the lender and the mortgage company. The appraiser inspects the property then compares it to other properties in the area. The appraisal gives a lender an

unbiased professional opinion as to the property’s value. Another consideration is the fact that when you are the borrower, it is simply good to know that you are not overpaying for the property. It is important to remind everyone that an appraisal does not take the place of a general inspection. Appraisals are used to determine the estimated value of a property based on numerous factors. A general inspection is a detailed examination of the physical condition of a property. The secondary market, i.e. Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, USDA and the VA create “guidelines” that lenders follow in an attempt to balance procedures to protect both parties’ interests. We all want buyers to be able to continue to buy and lenders to be able to continue to lend safely.

Charleroi Rotary Club Plans Pasta Buffet Dinner The Charleroi Rotary Club will hold a Pasta Buffet dinner on Thursday, October 17 at Anthony's on the Mon from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Along with dinner there will be a Chinese auction and musical entertainment. The buffet dinner will include penne and bowtie pasta, alfredo and marinara sauces, and three toppings for the pasta. Dinner will also include salad and bread, and coffee and tea. Other beverages and desserts will be available for purchase from the restaurant. A new antique mall is set to open October 1 in the Washington Crown Center. There has been a huge void since the closing of the previous antique mall in the Center which closed this past April to make room for the new Marshall's store. Exciting Event Set for October 5 With hopes of a sold out audience, Debbie Keefer, Director of the Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, has green-lighted the “Mon Valley’s Got Talent” show, which showcases singers, dancers, musicians and various acts from talented artists in the Mon Valley community. The contestants will be judged by a special panel of celebrity judges consisting of our local District Justices Jesse Cramer, Mark Wilson, Josh Kanalis, Joe Dalfonso, Charles Christner and Curtis Thompson. Serving as emcee is Larry Celaschi, Jr. and DJ will be Jerry Jericho. As they compete for the ultimate title of “Mon Valley’s Most Talented”. “Scaremare” Event to Haunt Old Trust Building in Monongahela By Earl Bugaile
The trailers posted online by the producers of “Scaremare” are both intriguing and frightening. They have the same production quality of the previews for a new TV series or the opening of a new horror flick soon to be seen at a theatre near you. But, instead of television or movies, “Scaremare” is a production that is coming to Monongahela during the month of October. And if the production is anything like the trailer, “Scaremare” might well become the must see event of the Halloween season. “It’s not a so-called ‘haunted house’ but rather a horrifying experience at the Monongahela Valley Trust Building filled with people who are in despair confusion and death at a time in history when the stock market crashed and America was going through the Great Depression,” said Mark Slagle, owner of Slagle Roofing, who purchased the old Trust Building on West Main Street two years ago. Slagle thought the building could have numerous uses, and it will be the setting for “Scaremare” which will be held every Friday and Saturday evening through the month of October. Slagle contacted long-time friend, Mark Witt, who heads Teen Quest, a faithbased youth organization from Somerset and suggested to Witt that the old Trust Building might provide the perfect stage for “Scaremare”, an annual event that has been held by the group in Somerset County. Witt liked the idea of finding a new venue, and the plans and scripts began to take shape. It’s the first effort to use the historic building for such an event. Witt wrote and produced and will direct the program, and volunteers from all the churches from the Monongahela area will become actors, makeup artists, technicians and the dozens of other jobs that go into creating a theatrical production. Visitors to “Scaremare” will be guided through all floors of the building and be transported back to October 29, 1929, the day of the Wall Street Crash. Like many people around the nation, Joseph Alexander, the bank owner took his own life during the Great Depression. The Depression signaled the end for the bank itself, since it never reopened and a bank never again existed in the building. Ben Fisher, who has been working with Slagle in creating the “Scaremare” said the script is based on actual facts and events that took place that day, along with a certain amount of fiction. “(Scaremare)will show what it would have been like to walk into the bank on that day, and see all the panic and people going crazy,” Fisher said. There is a small fee for visiting “Scaremare”, and Slagle says all proceeds will go to charity, including Teen Quest, and Missionaries in Ecuador and the Philippines. All of the work for preparing the old Trust Building has also been donated.

On Sunday, September 22nd, over 250 folks visited the Monessen Library to attend the opening reception of the Valley Art Club’s 71st Annual Exhibition. Melega Art Museum. The Mary Alvarez award, in Club President Christine Gillotty honor of past member and with best oil and acrylic “Two Big Reds” president, Mary Alvarez and her family for floral and landscape painting went to Patricia Jones for “Lovely Lilacs” and to Sabra Clark for “Winter in Williamsburg”. First, second, third and honorable mention awards were given for the following catagories: abstract, animal, floral, genre, landscape, portrait and still life. First place for abstract went to Christina Walko for “Fishing”, first place for animal went to Susan Weaver for “Wishful Thinking”, first place for floral went to Francine Micelli for “Decay”, first place for genre went to Mary Elaine Lozosky for “The Studda Bubba’s”, first place Landscape went to Victor Savage for “Niagra”, first place portrait went to Joyce Gazdick for “Laura” and first place still life went to Sally Taylor for “Not Just Black and White”. A great time was had by artists and guests alike. The hallways at Madonna Catholic Regional School are once again full of energy as students and teachers arrived for the start of a new school year. The Madonna Catholic Regional School serves the families residing in the small communities of the entire Mid-Mon Valley area. Madonna Catholic was established in 1998 and is subsidized by the parishes of Our Lady of the Valley in Donora, Transfiguration and St. Anthony in Monongahela, and Mary, Mother of the Church in Charleroi. MCRS continues to thrive and offers a variety of programs for students in Preschool through Grade Eight based on a curriculum established by the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the State of Pennsylvania.

FLU FAQS The following commonly asked questions were prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. What should I do to prepare for this flu season? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine is designed to protect against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season. Getting the flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available each year is always a good idea, and the protection you get from vaccination will last throughout the flu season. In addition, you can take everyday preventive steps like staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading influenza to others.
How effective is the flu vaccine? Inactivated influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) can vary from year to year and among different age and risk groups.
Why did I develop the flu after I received a flu shot? There are many reasons why you might have felt flu-like symptoms. You may have been exposed to a non-flu virus before or after you got vaccinated. The flu vaccine can only prevent illnesses caused by flu viruses. It cannot protect against non-flu viruses. Or you might have been exposed to flu after you got vaccinated but before the vaccine took effect. It takes about two weeks after you receive the vaccine for your body to build protection against the flu. You may have been exposed to an influenza virus that was very different from the viruses included in that year’s vaccine. The flu vaccine protects against the three influenza viruses that research indicates will cause the most disease during the upcoming season, but there can be other flu viruses circulating.
How long does a flu vaccine protect me from getting the flu? Multiple studies conducted over different seasons and across vaccine types and influenza virus subtypes have shown that the body’s immunity to influenza viruses (acquired either through natural infection or vaccination) declines over time. The decline in antibodies is influenced by several factors, including the antigen used in the vaccine, age of the person being vaccinated, and the person's general health (for example, certain chronic health conditions may have an impact on immunity). When most healthy people with regular immune systems are vaccinated, their bodies produce antibodies and they are protected throughout the flu season, even as antibody levels decline over time. People with weakened immune systems may not generate the same amount of antibodies after vaccination; further, their antibody levels may drop more quickly when compared to healthy people. For everyone, getting vaccinated each year provides the best protection against influenza throughout flu season. It’s important to get a flu vaccine every year, even if you got vaccinated the season before and the viruses in the vaccine have not changed for the current season.
Do healthy people need a flu shot? Anyone can become sick with the flu and experience serious complications. Older people, young children, pregnant women and people with medical conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disease are at especially high risk from the flu, but children, teens and adults who are active and healthy also can get the flu and become very ill from it. Flu viruses are unpredictable, and every season puts you at risk. Besides, you might be around someone who’s at high risk from the flu such as a baby, your grandparents, or even a friend. You don’t want to be the one spreading flu, do you?
Will the flu shot hurt? The very minor pain of a flu shot is nothing compared to the suffering that can be caused by the flu. The flu can make you very sick for several days; send you to the hospital, or worse. Whatever little discomfort you feel from the minor side effects of the flu vaccine is worthwhile to avoid the flu. Free Program Offers Information on Breast Cancer Screenings, Mammograms Monongahela Valley Hospital’s physicians and staff are doing their part to help women of all ages during Breast Cancer Awareness month in October. MVH and its Regional Cancer Center will present a free Breast Cancer Education and Screening Luncheon on Wednesday, October 30, at 1 PM in the hospital’s Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center. The event is free to all women who register and will feature a light lunch, two guest speakers, information regarding early detection and diagnosis of
breast cancer as well as optional breast examinations. The presentations will be given by Natalie Furgiuele, M.D., a breast surgeon at MVH, and Mohsen Isaac, M.D., director of Radiation Oncology at MVH. In addition to the physicians, radiology technologists from MVH will discuss breast cancer facts, techniques of performing breast self-examinations, and the importance of mammograms and mammography resources. Following the optional physical breast exams by members of the hospi-
tal’s medical staff, a mammogram will be scheduled for any woman who has an abnormal finding during the screening. Routine yearly mammograms may also be scheduled for women who have a family history of breast cancer, who fall into a high-risk category, and who have never had a baseline mammogram or who meet the recommended age guidelines. Podiatrists provide comprehensive medical and surgical care for a wide spectrum of foot and ankle conditions including common to complex disorders and injuries that affect people of all ages. to use the space. Change out fixtures like faucets and shower doors to increase aesthetic appeal. If you’re on a budget, replace light fixtures or switch plates to help refresh the space. When working with a small space, highlight storage options with shelving and update or remove wall decor, paint or wallpaper. Kitchen - Kitchen renovations can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000 and more. If that’s not in your budget, upgrading cabinetry and paint does wonders to liven up even the most outdated spaces. Add crown or decorative molding to “shape out” the kitchen cabinets and modernize the space. Repaint cabinets, or add new hardware to add visual interest and brighten dark spaces.
Outdoor Spaces - Curb appeal adds immediate interest to any home’s exterior. According to Remodeling Magazine, improving outdoor spaces can increase a home’s resale value dollar-for-dollar. Frame the front walkway with items that add visual interest, like flowers, potted plants, large rocks of various sizes and solar-powered lights. Valley Seniors Club Planning Holiday Trip to Lancaster The Valley Seniors Club is planning a bus trip to the “Miracle of Christmas” show at the Millennium Theater in Lancaster on Friday, November 22. The trip will include a family style lunch where everything is homemade and it is all you can eat! Also on the itinerary will be a visit to the Intercourse Canning Company where you can sample a variety of PA Dutch canned goodies and then we will sample the Dutch Pretzel, where all of the pretzels are still hand twisted. (You can even try your hand at twisting a pretzel!) Then, sit back and wonder as the Biblical story of the birth of Christ comes to life on Sight & Sound's giant wrap-around stage. Local Worship 32nd Annual CarpathoRusyn Celebration The 32nd Annual Carpatho-Rusyn Celebration will take place on Sunday, October 27 at St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church Social Hall, 201 East Main Street, Uniontown, PA. Hours are from 12:00 Noon – 6:00 PM The day will feature the heritage of the Carpatho-Rusyns who come from the very heart of Europe, along the northern and southern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. The day will highlight various aspects of CarpathoRusyn culture. Mouth-watering foods such as pirohi, holubki, halushki, kolbasi and sauerkraut, nalesniki (potato pancakes), soups, and much more. Slavjane Folk Ensemble
plays and presentations. A musical group of Rusyn Musicians will play polkas, cardas, and other favorite selections at 1:00 and 4:00 PM. Slavjane Folk Ensemble dancers and musicians from Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church, McKees Rocks, PA, will perform at 3:00 PM with their lively and energetic songs and dances. There will be a cooking demonstrations as well as videos and displays of Carpatho-Rusyn culture and customs, and iconography. The Carpatho-Rusyn Society display includes artifacts, regional Rusyn costumes, photographic displays, and models of Rusyn wooden churches. Members of the CarpathoRusyn Society will also be on hand to answer questions about genealogy. Once again there will be the fun-filled children’s activities room where children can experience the Rusyn culture through storytelling, and making folk
crafts such as wooden eggs, bookmarks, decorated cookies, coloring sheets, and more. This year’s activities will focus on folk arts, especially egg art. There will also be demonstrations of pysanky (egg decorating), folk embroidery, bobbin lace making, and woodburning, which are traditional folk crafts of the Carpatho-Rusyns as well as iconography. A display by the Carpatho-Rusyn Society will include costumes, crafts, religious artifacts, DVD’s, and demonstrations of the Carpatho-Rusyn heritage. Church tours at 2:00 and 4:00 PM will enable visitors to view the 3-tier icon screen and outdoor shrine at St. John’s Church. A pictorial display through power point and visuals will depict the span of 31 years of the Carpatho-Rusyn Celebration at St. John’s. Tables of crafts for sale will include contemporary crafts as well as tradition-
al Carpatho-Rusyn folk crafts. The contemporary crafts include secular and religious items, fall decorations, Christmas items, and much more. The folk crafts of the Rusyns include pysanky (decorated eggs), embroideries such as those used to cover Easter baskets to be blessed, wood burned icons and icon ornaments, greeting cards, and other articles. There will be CD’s/DVD’s of religious music, folk music, and folk dancing. Many raffles include Steeler memorabilia, folk art and craft items, and much more. The Carpathian Cookery Cookbook of St. John’s parish in its 15th printing will be once again available having sold over 15,000 copies. Holiday Event at Epiphany of Our Lord Church The Epiphany Ladies from the Epiphany of Our Lord Church, Monessen, will be hosting a Multi-Vendor Craft Show on Saturday, October 12. The event will be held in the Social Hall of the Church, located at 618 Knox Ave, Monessen. Doors will open at 10:00 AM and run until 6:00 PM. Vendors participating include Thirty-One Gifts, Pampered Chef, Premiere Designs, Celebrating Homes, Scentsy Products, Tastefully Simple, Lea Sophia Jewelry, Jamberry Nails by Jessica, Origami Owl, Tupperware, Shortbread City Designer Desserts and Jafra, Rounding out the event will be many local Mon Valley crafters, as well as crafters from Pittsburgh, Maryland and West Virginia, offering a variety of handmade items, including Deco-Mesh wreaths, doll clothes, handmade jewelry, afghans, scarves, pottery, night lights, ornaments and scrap-booking just to name a few. You didn't have to go any further than Chess Park in Monongahela on August 9 - 10 to enjoy some fine Christian music performances, rub elbows with some great folks from the valley and enjoy some great food. The “Praise and Worship in the Park” has become an annual event held in Chess Park in Monongahela. It is a summer event enjoyed by Christians and non-Christians, young and old from, throughout the upper Mon Valley and beyond. The celebration spanned the weekend of Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10 and featured some great professional groups featuring Christian music and vocals. On Saturday there were booths featuring a variety of great food, crafts and games prepared and featured by local church groups. For the kids there was face painting, a climbing wall and a variety of other games. Although many local churches had fundraising booths, the event was sponsored by the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Monongahela. This event, starting from very modest beginnings, has become a somewhat more professional and entertaining event highlighting the message of Christianity throughout the Mon Valley. If you weren’t there, you missed a great event - don’t miss it next summer.

Harvest Fair Scheduled at Calvary United Presbyterian Church The Calvary United Presbyterian Church, 8th and Thompson Avenue, Donora, will host a Harvest Fair on Saturday, October 5 from 9 AM to 3 PM in the church basement. The fair will include a White Elephant booth, a jewelry and used books booth, baked goods and walking tacos, homemade candy and note cards, face painting and a duck pond for the kids. The ladies of the church will be serving hot dogs, kielbasa with sauerkraut, and fried dough along with other food items. Everyone is invited to come and have fun.

Men's Breakfast Club of Pricedale Union Church Resumes Monthly Meetings The Men’s Breakfast Club of Pricedale Union Church, located at 203 Johnson Ave. in Belle Vernon, has resumed their monthly meetings for the 2013-2014 season. The group of multidenominational men meet on the last Saturday of each month from September through May with the exception of December. The breakfast meetings begin at 9:00 AM and are usually concluded by 11:00 or 11:30. The breakfast is prepared by our in-house chef, John Mimidis, co-owner of the Two Brothers Restaurant. There is no admission charge and no reservations are necessary, but an offering is taken to defray expenses. The next meeting with be held October 26.
