Monongahela Valley Hospital To Go Tobacco-Free in 2014

The annual West Newton Community Festival will be taking place Friday, September 6 from 5:00-11:00 p.m., Saturday, September 7 from 12:00 - 11:00 p.m., and Sunday, September 8 from 12:00-7:00 p.m.

This annual event is a great way to end summer and kick of the fall season. This fun filled weekend has a lot to offer the community with live bands and great food all weekend long. So mark your calendar this is an event that you don't want to miss.

We still have some spaces left for food and game booth vendors, non-profit and business booths, and craft, flea market, and trash and treasure tables.

Call 724-872-8697 for booth or table space information. Anyone interested in participating in the parade taking place on Saturday at 12:00 Noon can call 412-855-9596.

Monongahela Valley Hospital is joining the movement to better health. Effective January 2, 2014, MVH will become a tobacco-free environment.

“It’s the right thing to do,” said Louis J. Panza Jr., the health system’s president and CEO. “The residents of this area look to Monongahela Valley Hospital for guidance, and they trust us to act responsibly in matters related to preventative health care.”

The new tobacco-free policy will apply to all patients, visitors, employees, medical staff, volunteers, contractors and students on the hospital’s Carroll Township campus including the parking garage. In addition, the use of tobacco products will be prohibited in all Hospital-owned or leased buildings and outdoor areas as well as vehicles parked on MVH-owned or leased premises.

Smoking and tobacco products include but are not limited to: cigarettes, cigars, pipes, electronic cigarettes, chewing tobacco including dip, oral and spitting tobacco, snuff and any other form of smokeless tobacco.

Medical and scientific experts have conducted extensive research which indicates that smoking, the inhalation of second-hand smoke and the use of tobacco products are major health threats. As a community leader for health and wellness, MVH has an obligation to provide and promote a safe and healthful environment for everyone who visits its sites.

Outdoor Summer Concerts Worthy of More Support Dear Editor, I just attended my third concert at the recently renovated Monongahela Aquatorium and enjoyed myself immensely. However I couldn't get out of my head the question, "where is everyone?" While I am not fond of crowds and waiting in long lines, there was no evidence of these problems at the events and there was certainly ample room for more people to be present.

These concerts are most inexpensive and enjoyable outdoor entertainment in the area. I don't know why more people haven't taken part in this local festivity. There is nothing more fun than enjoying the summer weather outdoors listening to music. The price of admission is only $10. Parking is free.

There are plenty of vendors to satisfy your hunger or thirst and local merchants attend to provide shopping or souvenirs if desired. The concerts run every Saturday thru the end of August. Please support the efforts of the local businesses. These opportunities may only happen once in a lifetime. Be a part of history in your neighborhood.

Kudos to the Monongahela Cemetery for a Wonderful Anniversary Celebration Dear Editor, We attended a wonderful musical concert held at the Monongahela Cemetery in honor of their 150th Anniversary on June 28, 2013. Paul Dolinar and his “Too Many Tubas” along with a number of his musical friends from the Community Band performed for a couple hundred people. The musical talent represented spanned several generations. The music was uplifting and lively even considering the venue was a cemetery.

The program included a variety of music from show tunes to tributes to our veterans. The band was comprised of several different retired band directors and music teachers from the area as well as young college students majoring in music. Some of the solos included Paul Frederick singing “Beep Beep”, a trio including Dorothy Dolinar, Erika Hubbell and Sylvia Bender sang the “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”, Laura Bertoni on the alto saxophone played “Harlem Nocturne”, and Dana Robinson with “Joy to the World”.

Kudos to the “Too Many Tubas”, the Community Band, Scott Frederick and his committee for putting together this extravaganza of music. With the success of this concert, the committee is already planning next year's celebration.

FUN FEST AT CEDAR CREEK PARK The “August Fun Fest at Cedar Creek Park”, now in its 27th year, will be held on Sunday, August 11 from 11:00 am to dusk.

This annual event features over 20 food and refreshment booths, live entertainment, children’s activities, petting zoo, kiddie train rides, carnival amusement rides, flea market, arts and crafts show, bingo, car cruise and more! The Greater Rostraver Chamber of Commerce (GRC) will operate three refreshment booths, selling coffee and donuts in the morning and soda, water, hot dogs and foot longs throughout the day.

LIVING HISTORY WEEKEND - The Greater Monessen Historical Society will celebrate Founders Day with a Living History Weekend at Monessen City Park on August 17 and 18, 2013. To honor Monessen Founder, Colonel James M. Schoonmaker and the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, re-enactors from the 11th P. V. I Co. K, Inc. and the 11th Pennsylvania Reserve Infantry Co. F. will set up authentic Civil War camps to showcase the living conditions of troops during the war years.

There will be food booths, vendors, local authors, displays, photo opportunities and fun for the entire family. The festival will run from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Sunday.

FUNDRAISER EVENT - The Rostraver Public Library, located at 700 Plaza Drive in Belle Vernon, is sponsoring an evening of good food, good conversation, live music and a live auction. The event will be held on Friday, August 23 at The Willow Room.

Doors will open at 6:00 pm with a complimentary drink and hors d’oeuvres, buffet dinner at 7:00 pm followed by the live auction conducted by George Hare, Sr. Guests will also enjoy a live musical performance

by Jim Sykes. There will also be a Chinese auction and other raffles. Many items have been donated valued from $50 to over $1,000. Tickets for this event are $50 per person and are available at the Rostraver Public Library or by calling 724-379-5511.

Kozlowski Family Fundraiser a Success The family of Ethan Kozlowski wishes to extend a sincere thank you to everyone involved in their recent fundraiser. Ethan's spaghetti dinner benefit, was held on May 18 at the Floreffe Firehall in Jefferson Hills to raise money for his continuing struggle with Glutaric Acidemia Type 1.

The event was a huge success, serving over 300 dinners.

West Newton Farmers Market Underway!

The first annual West Newton Farmers Market located at Simeral Square is off and running! The market runs each Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Each week you never know what great items we will be offering for sale so make sure to stop by and check out the vendors. We are also accepting, in addition to produce vendors, artists, jewelry makers, crafters, wood workers, etc. This is a wonderful way to spend your Saturday morning overlooking the Yough river and meeting new people traveling on the trail. This is also a great opportunity to get you product to market.

Also calling all gardeners. If you have a small vegetable or flower garden and would like to offer your items to the public and make some extra money, give us a call to reserve a spot.

Become a Child Volunteer and Make a Difference in the Future of a Child Attend a FREE One-Day Workshop to Learn More Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) works on behalf of the best interest of children in the Washington County juvenile dependency system. These trained volunteers speak up for children who have experienced the pain of being torn from their families by circumstances of neglect and/or abuse. The volunteer takes steps to make sure a child has a voice in court and advocates for that child throughout the child welfare system to ensure a safe permanent home as quickly as possible.

CASA for Kids is sponsoring a free, one-day, six-hour workshop to learn about the child welfare laws and juvenile dependency system. Learn about the issues surrounding abuse/neglect and the foster-care system. In advocating for an abused or neglected child, you give that child a voice - and a chance for a better life. Learn how you can make a difference in the future of a child on September 6 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm at the CCAC site in Washington Crown Center, 1550 West Chestnut St. Call CASA for Kids office phone at 724-228-0414 for registration. Also we need volunteers to help us look into expanding our hours to serve the public in a greater capacity. Upcoming Fundraisers – Donations Needed!

We are accepting donations of vintage or new china, matching cups and saucers to use in an upcoming “Tea Time” fundraiser that we will be hosting in late September. We ask that each piece be in nice condition free from any cracks or chips.

Also, our “Jewelry blow out sale” in June was such a huge success and numerous individuals have asked if we were going to do it again, so we will be collecting for our “2014 Mega Jewelry Sale” starting now. We are in need of new, gently used, vintage, costume, and fine jewelry, as well as new and vintage jewelry boxes.

So if you have a donation of either china cups and saucers or jewelry please feel free to stop by and drop your donation off at the library.

NEWS FROM THE GREATER MONESSEN HISTORICAL SOCIETY Founder's Day Celebration Activities Planned The Greater Monessen Historical Society (GMHS) will celebrate Founders Day with a Living History Weekend at Monessen City Park on August 17 and 18, 2013.

See how new army recruits were enlisted and lived in the camps of the Civil War. Participate in camp life and join in various activities. Meet Mrs. Abraham Lincoln and Clara Barton, along with other Civil War personalities, who will be touring the encampment during the

weekend. Free admittance to the park and festival, which is located on Grand Boulevard in the Park Plan area of the city.

Roaring 20's Dinner Dance On September 21, GMHS will host a Roaring Twenties Dinner/ Dance at St. Spyridon’s Greek Orthodox Church hall at 1207 Grand Boulevard, Monessen from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Travel back to the time of Calvin Coolidge and the Charleston. Historic dress welcomed but optional. Tickets are $40 and available at the Monessen Heritage Museum, 505 Donner Avenue or by calling 724-684-8460.

Seating is limited. Buffet meal of 1920’s favorites. Live entertainment by the popular group, “Ortner Roberts”. Beer and wine included.

Heritage Museum The current exhibit at the Heritage Museum showcases Monessen schools. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., or other times by appointment.

Fine Art Classes The Bentleyville Public Library is offering a Fine Art Series, August 21, 28 and September 4. A three week session of fine art classes taught by Kama Lee, currently teaching drawing and sketch for CCAC non-credit programs. Students will be introduced to various mediums such as ink, pencil and acrylic. They will work on their own art projects under the instructors guidance and critiquing. Prepaid, nonrefundable deposit of $40 is for all three sessions. A supply list may be picked up at the time of registration.

The Tener Family recently returned to Charleroi for the Dedication of the Governor John K. Tener Memorial All the Tener relatives with Charleroi Boro representatives Council President Mark Bridge on June 29. Their trip included Alterici and Mayor Nancy Ellis. a visit and tour of the area. A dinner was held at the Elks Club in Charleroi where Governor John K. Tener was a charter member. He lived in Charleroi from 1891 to 1939, even parttime while he was Governor from 1911 to 1915. Family representatives flew in from Boston, San Antonio, Virginia and California.

$3,000 in Grants Awarded to “Clicks for Cash” Contest Winners The Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF) has announced the results of its recent web-based “Clicks for Cash” contest for charities that have registered to participate in WCCF Gives – its inaugural community-wide day of giving on September 10.

Members of the community were encouraged to participate by visiting www.wccfgives.org and clicking on the charity profile pages of their favorite WCCF Gives participants. The WCCF tracked the unique pageviews of each charity’s profile page from June 10-23 to determine a winner. Each unique pageview was counted as a vote for that charity.

Receiving more than 400 votes during the contest period, Washington Symphony Orchestra secured the grand prize: a $1,000 unrestricted grant from the Acorn Fund. All other participating charities were entered into a computerized lottery for an opportunity to receive one of four $500 Acorn Fund grants. The charities received one chance in the lottery for each vote they received in the contest. The Brownson House, Old Schoolhouse Players, Children’s School of Washington, and the Literacy Council of Southwestern Pennsylvania were randomly selected as the lottery winners.

“With 5,580 votes recorded, the ‘Clicks for Cash’ contest greatly surpassed our expectations,” stated Betsie Trew, WCCF President & CEO. “The primary factor in determining how well our charities will do on September 10 is the public’s awareness of the day of giving opportunity. We want our charities to do well and so we designed the ‘Clicks for Cash’ contest as a dress rehearsal for WCCF Gives, rewarding those charities who took steps to increase the public’s awareness of the opportunity."

Belle Vernon Fire Department Garners Classification Upgrade

The Belle Vernon Fire Department announced that their classification has been upgraded. This could mean renters and homeowners insurance decreases for those who live in Belle Vernon. Residents should contact their insurance companies and ask if the Fire Department rating change affects their insurance price.

‘Trucks, Tractors, & Trolleys’ Event at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum will hold its annual "Trucks, Tractors & Trolleys" event on Sunday, August 25 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Visitors can see dozens of classic tractors, pickup trucks, delivery vehicles, and modern construction and commercial vehicles including a rare 1940 Ford Armored Car from Northwest Savings Bank and a modern Waste Management truck powered by natural gas. Visitors can ride three different trolleys (running every 15 minutes) and tour the Trib Total Media Trolley Display Building, which houses nearly three dozen streetcars, and the Restoration Shop.

This is the third year that the museum has teamed with the Washington & Greene County Antique Tractor Association for Trucks, Tractors & Trolleys. The tractors were a popular addition to previous shows. There will also be a World War II encampment with uniformed interpreters and informational exhibits and numerous artifacts.

There will be a food and ice cream vendor on site, and visitors can enjoy the picnic area while DJ Fritz plays a variety of music. Families can check out the East Penn Traction Club’s model train display and also take advantage of the children’s play area, which includes face painting, Thomas and Chuggington play tables, and play trolley car 225.

The museum welcomes those would like to display a vehicle during the show. Pre-registration is not required and there is no fee, though contributions are welcome. Vehicles should

arrive before 10am, with the first 50 arrivals receiving a dash plaque. All registrants receive two complimentary tickets and will also be randomly entered to win cash prizes and museum merchandise.

The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum opened to the public in 1963 and would like to thank its 50th Anniversary sponsors: Bombardier Transportation, Giant Eagle and Wabtec Corporation. It has grown dramatically over the past 50 years and is staffed mostly by volunteers.

Admission rates are $10 adults, $9 seniors (62+), $7 children (3-15) and free for children under 3. Admission includes all exhibits and activities; the Trolley Era introductory film and exhibits; unlimited trolley rides; a tour of the Trib Total Media Trolley Display Building; and the museum store.

Miniature Golf For a Good Cause!

Local Boy Scout Holding Mini Golf Tournament to Support Eagle Badge Project Tyler Wilson is a 15 year old life scout in St. Sebastian’s Boy Scout Troup 1543 from Belle Vernon, PA. He is currently planning his Eagle Scout Project which will be to renovate the playground at Fayette County Children & Youth Services in Uniontown, PA. To help in the funding of this project, he is holding a Mini Golf Tournament at Bill’s Golfland, Route 51, Belle Vernon, on Sunday, August 4, 2013. Registration will begin at 12:30 pm with a shotgun start at 1:00 pm. Cost is $7 a person or $20 for a group of four. There will be prizes and a lot of fun for a good cause.

Tyler just finished his freshman year at Belle Vernon Area High School. He is an active member of the BVA golf team and is employed at Martin’s Flowers & Shrubs in Belle Vernon.

2013 Brownsville Community Festival and Duck Race

Learn Primitive Fire Making at Mingo Creek Park Learn how to make fire the old-fashion way! The Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering a “Primitive Fire Making” program at Mingo Creek Park on Wednesday, August 21.

The program will be held at Shelter 6 and will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Various methods and techniques of fire making will be shared. All participants will have an opportunity to make fire using flint and steel.

Pre-registration is required and can be made by calling the Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation office at 724-228-6867.

There is no fee for this program.

Mingo Creek Park is located 12 miles east of Washington, PA, off of Route 136.

Monessen Announces Board Reappointments

Monessen held its monthly City Council meeting on July 17, 2013. During the meeting Mayor Mary Jo Smith announced the following board reappointments: Charles Urbanowicz to the Mon Valley Refuse Authority effective January 1, 2014 for a five year term.

Candis Kelley and Madeline Dudas to the Monessen Public Library Board effective January 1, 2014 for three year terms Jean Fisher to the Property Maintenance Board of Review effective January 1, 2014 for a five year term George Shusta to the Zoning Board of Appeal effective retroactively on June 1, 2013 for a three year term Mayor Smith also disclosed that all of the people reappointed were the only applicants for those positions.

In other news Council approved the retirement of Stanley T. Marinos, Jr. effective August 1, 2013 from the Streets Department and a request from resident James Vetere was approved for a handicapped spot in front of his home.

Councilman Dudas read a letter received by Council from Vicky Rice of the Union Baptist Church expressing their appreciation to the city regarding their participation and support of the church’s Family Day held at City Park.

Mayor Smith announced that as of Monday, July 22, 2013 all delinquent garbage bills from 2003 through 2012 will be placed on the Monessen website.

Mayor proclaimed Saturday, July 27, 2013, as “The Monessen High School Class of 1963 Day” as requested by Norma Morris, which is current City Clerk Rosalie Nicksich’s graduating class.

Bentworth Seed Lending Library July Seminar

Members of Bentworth Seed Lending Library enjoyed a wonderful evening learning how to eat for free from the weeds in their yards and also enjoying fresh entrees prepared from member's gardens produce.

The July 17 Bentworth Seed Lending Library seminar featured "Eat Your Weeds" by instructor Kama Lee. In the possibility that no other food may be available or for on location nutrition anytime, you really can eat the weeds and plants from your yard!

In recipes using produce from the garden, Diana Blair made a spectacular "apple" pie using her fresh zucchini, Kama Lee served sumac lemonade, and Autumn Harris prepared a wonderful fresh salsa using her fresh organic garden vegetables, basil pesto pasta with dried tomatoes, and fresh dilled cucumbers. Members also learned how to start harvesting and storing open pollinated seeds for next season, and how to dry garden produce for compact storage.

Whiskey Rebellion Festival Held in Washington, PA

The streets of Washington resounded with music and "gunfire" the weekend of July 11-13 with the celebration of the 2013 Third Annual Whiskey Rebellion Festival.

The Festival began with programs on Thursday in conjunction with the Washington Main Street Farmer's Market and a perThe festival featured many displays of early American crafts formance under the stars by and artifacts and reenactors in period clothing. the Washington Symphony Orchestra at 8:00 pm. A "Blues, Brews & BBQ" and bands including Ruby Red, Jill West and the Blues Attack, and the Billy Price Band performed on Friday. The Main Street Community Parade began the celebration on Saturday morning along with reenactments, great food and craft booths, historic displays and community organization booths, a scavenger hunt, tours of the Bradford and LeMoyne Houses, and many other fun activities that concluded with performances by the Panther Hollow String Band, The Weedrags, the SteelDrivers and a great fireworks finale.

Standing ground in front of the David Bradford House, rebel reenactors return warning shots on U.S. troops who came to arrest David Bradford.

In 1794 the U.S. Government under George Washington sent troops to enforce a new tax on whiskey made by farmers on the Appalachian frontier, and to capture David Bradford at his home in Washington.

These reenactors came to arrest Bradford who was a prominent figure in the Whiskey Rebellion.

River Town Program to Sponsor Canoe and Kayak Paddling on the Mon River

The Bentleyville Eagle Riders are hosting a bike run on August 24 for Aidan.

Aidan, a 5th grader from Bentleyville, was diagnosed on September 21, 2012, with Ewing’s Sarcoma bone cancer. He receives treatment at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh including nearly a year of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Aidan enjoys playing with Lego’s and video games. He loves all things Mario and Nintendo and playing with the family dog, Champ. His favorite school subjects are math and science. Someday, he hopes to become an inventor. He is a wonderful big brother to 5 year old, Dylan. Through his battle with cancer, Aidan has displayed immeasurable amounts of strength and courage. Registration will be from 9:00 - 10:30 am. Kickstands up at 11:00. Ride will start and end at the Bentleyville FOE 1809, located at 395 Hazel Street. Back to School BASH at Washington Crown Center Washington Crown Center invites you to be a part of their 2013 Back to School BASH, being held August 23-24. Friday night, August 23, will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. with a concert by Vanessa Campagna. Saturday, August 24, there will be a Dinosaur Walk for kids at 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 Noon. 5th Annual “Easy to Be Green” Day Scheduled for August 15 Television Sets No Longer Accepted The MVRCC will hold its 5th Annual “Easy to Be Green” Day on Wednesday, August 14 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Chamber building, One Chamber Plaza, Charleroi.

The following items will be collected: • Electronics—computers, monitors, cell phones, digital cameras, chargers, adapters, microwaves, old radios etc. by Goodwill Industries of Southwestern PA. As of July 9, Goodwill announced that it can no longer accept television sets. The Chamber has no outlet to recycle or dispose of televisions so they will not be accepted under any circumstances. Any publicity about the Green Day event that has stated otherwise is now retracted. Businesses wishing to dispose of a large number of computers can call Goodwill for a pick up - the Chamber has all the info!

Fredericktown Area Public Library Fundraiser A limited edition oil on canvas, “The Miner”, has been donated to the Fredericktown Area Public Library by the artist, Mary Elaine Lozosky, to be used as a fundraiser. The original oil of “The Miner” was awarded first place in the portrait category in the 2009 Valley Art Club Juried Show. The library is selling tickets for $5 for three(3) numbers that play on the PA Lottery November 11, 2013, 7:00 p.m. drawing.

August Children's Storytime Helps Prep for Kindergarten The Monongahela Area Library will host three children’s Storytime programs during the month of August aimed at getting children excited about starting Kindergarten. Each week the Storytime will be geared at skills and knowledge the children will be using in Kindergarten, as well as books from the suggested Ringgold reading list.

The program starts on Wednesday, August 7 at 11 a.m. with “Letters,” followed on the succeeding weeks by “Numbers and Colors” and “Shapes and Rhymes.” It will conclude with a special Kick of Kindergarten party including special guests to entertain the children.

The Monongahela Area Library will be hosting an afternoon of Rick Riordan-inspired activities called “Percy Fest.” Tuesday, August 6 at 1:00 p.m. the library will welcome young enthusiasts of the Percy Jackson titles for an afternoon of pizza, crafts inspired by the cultures in author Riordan’s books, as well as some games, trivia challenges, and fan fun. The grand door prize for the day of fun filled activities will be a pair of tickets to a showing of “Sea of Monsters,” the new Percy Jackson film set to open August 7, 2013.

The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum (PTM) is pleased to announce the opening of its new exhibit: “Streetcar Stories of Washington County” on Friday August 30, 2013, recognizing 60 years since the interurban ran in Washington County. This exhibit features not only large display panels, showcasing individuals’ lives during the interurban trolley car era through documentaries that capture stories in their own words.

Lynne Thompson, the Museum’s Educator and Volunteer Coordinator, said of the exhibit: “Visitors will be able to get a real sense of what the time period was like, through the stories of those who experienced the interurban streetcars in Washington County. The exhibit is multi-faceted so that visitors can have a diverse sensory experience with the inclusion of the digital documentaries created by the students of the Douglas Education Center in Monessen. Folks can complete their visit by actually riding a vintage trolley.”

This educational living history experience captures the museum’s mission, and embraces our motto, “It’s more than a ride, it’s an experience!”

MV Cultural Trust Seeks Support From Charleroi Borough Coyle Theatre a Centerpiece of Proposed Cultural and Entertainment District

Barry Cassidy, who was hired in February as a Special Consultant to the Board of the Mon Valley Cultural Trust, addressed the Charleroi Borough Council on July 11. Cassidy discussed a plan for a Charleroi Arts and Entertainment Economic Development and Repositioning Strategy.

Specifically, Cassidy, who will be meeting shortly with Borough Manager Donn Henderson and Mon Valley Progress Council’s Joe Kirk, asked council to consider allowing the Borough to be a conduit for a $500,000 grant for the now inoperable Coyle theatre, which closed in 1999.

In Cassidy’s plan, the Coyle would be used as an anchor to implement an arts occupancy based real estate strategy to help fill the 25% vacant commercial properties between 2nd and 7th Streets along McKean and Fallowfield Avenues.

Cassidy says much of the real estate in the downtown area is undervalued with high vacancy, making it attractive to artists. It is also an enterprise zone, which would give possibly up to 65% tax credits when the property is bought for commercial use and restoration.

Cassidy would like to increase foot traffic in the downtown and promote it as an area artists would want to reside in. He says that in many cases the buildings are in need of comprehensive rehabilitation efforts and that many of the upper apartments have not been rented in years and may present code issues that will need to be resolved before the units can be occupied.

The Borough is currently promoting recreation and entertainment, especially in the area of the Market House and parks. Cassidy would like to have films and occasional concerts at the Coyle, thereby increasing nighttime foot traffic to supplement the already strong daytime lunch foot traffic and add vibrancy to the retail and restaurant business downtown.

Council President Mark Alterici invited Barry Cassidy to attend the council’s agenda meeting on August 1 to discuss the plan before council considers it at the August 7 meeting.

Western Pennsylvania Trolley Meet Set for August 24 at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum will hold a new event on Saturday, August 24 called the "Western Pennsylvania Trolley Meet" from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Featured will be special trolley operations (Pittsburgh trolleys in the morning, Philadelphia trolleys in the afternoon), operating trolley layouts from the East Penn Traction Club among others will be on display and dealers will be selling model trolley items. Visitors can ride different trolleys (running every 15 minutes) and tour the Trib Total Media Trolley 4145 inbound from Fairgrounds.

Charleroi Rotary Club Hosts Students Over the several weeks, Rotarians in the Charleroi Rotary Club have hosted students from the Charleroi Area School District and students from Canada and France. The students provided information regarding their backgrounds and their connections to Rotary International.

On Wednesday, June 26, Natalie Baker and her mother Patty Baker were guests at the weekly meeting. Natalie had previously been a "Student of the Month" and was awarded the Charleroi Rotary Club's scholarship upon her graduation from Charleroi High School. During the Charleroi Rotary President Steve Arnowitz meeting a check was presented to her by presents a check to Natalie Baker, Charleroi Rotary 2013 Scholarship recipient.

President Steven Arnowitz. Natalie will attend the University of Pittsburgh. She thanked the members for awarding the scholarship and noted that it would be very helpful as she begins her collegiate career.

On Wednesday, July 10, four students attended the meeting to speak about Rotary's foreign exchange student program. Accompanied by Donna Vesely were Sophie Heon, Guillaume Dumont, Sophia Uribe, and Adam Trussa. Sophie Heon is from Quebec, Canada. She is currently staying with Sophia Uribe who is a student at Charleroi High School. When her visit concludes, Miss Heon will return to Quebec. Miss Uribe is making plans for a future exchange visit. Guillaume Dumont is from Grenoble, France and is staying with Adam Trussa. When his visit concludes, Mr. Dumont will return to France. Mr. Trussa who is a recent graduate from Charleroi will join him for a visit in August.

The four students are part of the Rotary Foundation's Short Term exchange program which enables students to visit for periods of up to a month with a host family. While staying in the Charleroi Area the students have visited local and regional points of interest, attended the fireworks presentation in Pittsburgh, and are hoping to visit New York City before they return to their home countries. President Arnowitz and the members in attendance enjoyed meeting the students and wished them well during their visit.

NEWS FROM THE DONORA HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND SMOG MUSEUM The Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum has had an active summer. We recently hosted “Try Again Homes” from Washington, PA in June for a tour of the museum along with a scavenger hunt for six children and their chaperones. Try Again Homes is a private, non-profit corporation committed to providing safe nurturing places for children in need and dedicated to the growth, development, and empowerment of individuals and families for healthier communities through adoption and foster care programs.

Donora Smog Featured on National Cable Network The Weather Channel’s series “Weather That Changed The World” featured Donora’s 1948 Smog on Sunday, June 16th. The show is repeating as Episode #3 of a nine part series and is titled “Pennsylvania’s Fatal Smog” and usually shows around 9:00 p.m. The show lasts 30 minutes and was filmed by Pioneer Productions from London, England who visited Donora for 3 days last November and features interviews by current and former Donorans.

Donora Artifacts and Memorabilia Wanted One of the goals at the historical society is to keep Donora related artifacts in Donora and preserve them accordingly.

Artifacts can be old photos, steel mill related mementos, school related mementos, professional uniforms related to the armed services, fire and police departments, sports equipment, family genealogies, home movies, paper objects, etc., providing they have a relationship to Donora. Because the Society is a non-profit organization, we are not

in a position to purchase artifacts at this time.

If you decide to entrust the Society with the safe-keeping of your family’s treasures, we ask that you briefly write down a few notes of the “what, where, and when” of the artifact. If you are physically unable to hand deliver your objects, we would be more than happy to set up appointments at the museum.

Larger artifacts that may be too awkward to deliver can also be picked up by one of our historians..

If you feel like you can’t part with your artifacts at this time because of sentimental reasons, we hope that you will keep us in mind in the future and you can rest assured that your family treasures will be well kept for future generations to enjoy.

To that end, some of the newly acquired artifacts that we received are: four gold-colored pipe organ pipes from St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church.the largest being 9.5 feet tall; a nearly 100 year old antique mangle iron that was used at the Irondale Hotel that was once located just across the street from where our museum sits today; and, an incredible collection of scrapbooks from legendary Donora football coach Jimmy Russell that date back to 1930, that contain personal mementoes and pictures from his coaching days.

The Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum is located at the intersection of Sixth and McKean in the heart of Donora, and is open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or by appointment.

Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) and its parent organization, Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc. (MVHR) has reelected their boards which are comprised of some of the area’s most respected business, medical and community leaders.

John D. Fry, of McMurray, president and owner of Procurement Specialty Group, Inc., has been reelected chairman of the Board of Directors of MonVale Health Resources, Inc. and chairman of the Board of Trustees Monongahela Valley Hospital, Inc. This marks Mr. Fry’s fourth term as the leader of the boards.

In addition, R. Carlyn Belczyk, of Monessen, was reelected vice chairman and Jeff M. Kotula, of Washington, Pa., was reelected secretary of both boards.

Why Flood Insurance?

Homeowner's insurance is an important thing for any homeowner to have. It covers your home and belongings if they are destroyed by disasters such as tornados or fires, but covers nothing in the case of a flood.

Flood insurance is provided by the government through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). It can be purchased from your homeowner's insurance agent, but it is completely separate from your homeowner's policy. Flood insurance is relatively inexpensive, so if you live near a small stream, lake or one of our major rivers it is well worth considering.

Property located in low flood-prone areas may be able to get a lower premium on their flood insurance. Even if you're not near a body of water, flooding is possible from melting snow or water running downhill. If you might possibly be at risk for these occurrences, you may want to consider flood insurance as well. A little know fact is that about 25% of all flood insurance claims are located outside of a high-risk flood area.

Flood insurance may cover the replacement value of your home and the cash value of your belongings. There is a limit to how much they will pay on both. To compensate, some specialized insurance companies sell excess flood insurance.

It picks up where federal flood insurance leaves off, covering the remainder of replacement value on your house and cash value of your personal property.

Often people in flood-prone areas do not purchase flood insurance because the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers assistance after floods in those areas. However, FEMA can only provide assistance in areas that have been declared federal disaster areas. If the President does not make this declaration, those without insurance have no assistance in rebuilding.

When buying a home, flood insurance is usual-

ly required by your lender when the property being purchased is located in a “Flood Zone” according to FEMA’s maps. As a matter of fact, if you are buying a home with a federally backed mortgage in an area with a high flood risk, the law actually requires you to have flood insurance.

Whether it is required or not, flood insurance can give you the security of knowing that your damages are covered in the case of a flood.

WSO Receives Heinz Grant To Support Season Opening Concert The Washington Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce receipt of a $7,000 grant from The Heinz Endowments’ Small Arts Initiative to assist with the production of its October 12th concert – “Space – The Final Frontier.”

Grants from The Heinz Endowments’ Small Arts Initiative are designed to further the development of small, professional arts’ organizations by providing support for specific projects or other artistic opportunities.

The day ended with a spectacular fireworks display at dusk filling the skies over Bentleyville.

The ninth annual “Run for Alex” race and walk was held in Bentleyville on the morning of June 1, 2013. A total of 1,228 participants competed in the 5k, 2k, and one mile walk divisions. Run for Alex celebrates the life of Bentworth High School student Alexzandra Loos who was killed at the age of 15 by a speeding car as she walked home from soccer practice in August 2004. Monies raised from entries fund scholarships for local students and numerous other philanthropic endeavors.

Local People News Christie Cyktor Rides to Success at Collegiate Commencement More than 300 students smiled as they walked on stage May 11 at Saint Vincent College’s 167th annual commencement ceremony to receive their diplomas. But no one had a bigger smile than Christie Cyktor, a senior biochemistry major from West Newton, who actually didn't walk at all.

Cyktor, who has been physically challenged with Arthrogryposis, a condition which has severely weakened her joints and muscles since she was born, has smiled through that affliction all of her young life and just about any other challenge fate has thrown at her during the past four years. An electric wheelchair is her shining carriage that zips her quickly around campus. On graduation day, she rode it up to the elevated stage via a specially constructed ramp accompanied by the enthusiastic cheers and applause of her family and friends.

She said her hope is that her success will be seen as a tribute to her late parents. “My older sister, Kari, my brother, Josh, my twin sister, Jennifer, and my brother-in-law, Anthony, will all be there to share the day with me,” she said. Her mother, Lori, died of cancer just two weeks before her sophomore year and her father, Jeff, died of a heart attack a year later.

Inspired by the loss of her mother, Cyktor started a chapter of Colleges Against Cancer on the Saint Vincent campus to raise funds to fight cancer.

“I like to think that I got her fighting spirit and I try to carry that on all the time,” Cyktor said. “My roommate, Caitlin Sawyer, and I started the group to do a Relay for Life on campus,” she explained. “We have raised nearly $40,000 to date. I am sad to let it go

but happy that it will continue in future years.”

She was anxious to graduate so she can begin preparing for her next challenge – pursuing graduate study toward a master’s degree in forensic science at West Virginia University. She celebrated her acceptance to the competitive program when she received a letter of acceptance on April 17. “I have been interested in a career in forensic science since I was in high school,” she related.

“I decided to study biochemistry at Saint Vincent because I think it is fascinating to analyze hair, blood and DNA to provide evidence to solve crimes.”

Cyktor’s high school chemistry teacher, Dana Newlin, a 2000 graduate of Saint Vincent College, encouraged her to consider studying at the Boyer School of Natural Sciences at Saint Vincent. When she visited campus, she met Dr. Bruce Bethke and Dr. Matthew Fisher and sat in on a couple chemistry classes including one taught by Dr. Jason Vohs. When the class was over, she asked for directions back to the admission office. “He personally walked me back and talked about my interest in chemistry. I immediately felt comfortable and knew that I could count on everyone to work with me.

Other students have been very helpful and supportive. It has worked out very well,” she said.

As a biochemistry major, Cyktor spent most of her time at classes and laboratories in the Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion. “Even though construction was underway during the past several years, I didn’t let a little mud, muck or rock slow me down.

Saint Vincent has been great about making sure that I have a normal college experience.”

Local Student to Intern at the Mon Valley Regional Chamber Corey Greenwood, a student from Slippery Rock University, will be interning at the Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce in Charleroi this summer. He will be helping to coordinate and take lead of various special events, programs and communications.

Corey is fulfilling the final requirement for his Communications: Public Relations degree from Slippery Rock University and will complete his Chamber internship in August. All students taking a Bachelor of Science in Communications are required by the department to complete at least 120 hours at an approved internship site.

Corey will graduate from Slippery Rock University in December of this year, and will pursue a career in the public relations field.

“Everyone knows Pizza Frank.” Stephan Nowo, owner of the new Italian Village Pizza in Monongahela, said. He’s referring to Frank Veltri, who opened the first Italian Village at Century III Mall in 1980 with his partner Jack Miller.

But Nowo knows him as Uncle Frank.

Stephan knew from a young age that he wanted to get into the family business. “When I was sixteen, a junior in high school, I had to write a paper on what I wanted to be.” Nowo said. “I wrote that I wanted to own a pizza place.”

Now, with his business partner and brother-inlaw Chuck Jeffers, he owns two. Nowo opened the Belle Vernon store in 2004 and after closing a Squirrel Hill shop he started the search for another location. When asked why he chose Monongahela he explained, “People at my Belle Vernon store were asking for one. Now about 10% of my walk-in customers here were Belle Vernon regulars who live in Mon City.” Nowo also said Monongahela was very welcoming. He joined the Chamber of Commerce and was pleased when the Mayor of Monongahela came into the store on opening day, April 8, 2013, to shake his hand.

The little pizza place that started in a local mall now has over twenty locations. There are several in Pennsylvania but also Kentucky, Florida, and even Pizza Frank’s native Amantea, Italy. 50% of the locations are family owned.

The Monongahela shop is located at 169 W. Main Street, the former site of Mama Pepino’s. Nowo bought and renovated the entire building. WholeLife Counseling Opens in Monongahela

Licensed counselors Lesa Vivio and Christina Pucel are taking a new approach to healing at their practice, WholeLife Counseling. Both hold a Master’s degree in Counseling and have a combined total of 22 years in social services and counseling. Now they are now bringing a collaboration of their private practices to the Mon Valley.

They took a great deal of care and consideration when looking for a location for their offices. “Monongahela has done such an incredible job with promoting new small businesses and really being a friendly environment. It has a sort of familial, old school, small town community vibe.” Vivio said.

Pucel added, “The Mon City just embraces anyone willing to come in and bring something to what they are already offering here.”

This is their first time owning a business and running private practices together. Pucel said, “One of the things I like about private practice is the ability to manage your own caseload, really working with individuals that are a good fit for you.”

Together they are dedicated to giving their clients a variety of techniques and skills to approach healing holistically. Individually, Ms. Pucel has worked extensively with families, children, and adolescents and Ms. Vivio has worked comprehensively with children and individuals suffering from traumatic injuries. She holds a certification as a Brain Injury Specialist.

Even with their years of experience handling specialized cases they are reluctant to box themselves into one particular area of practice. “We like to serve a diverse population.” Pucel explained.

Both women are passionate about the work they do and are excited about having the opportunity to help the residents of the Mon Valley and surrounding areas.

Monongahela Valley Hospital Honors Former Board Member A local man who provided vision and leadership to Monongahela Valley Hospital and its predecessor hospitals for nearly 45 years was honored by more than 150 staff, friends and family when the fountain on the Carroll Twp. campus was dedicated in his memory.

The late Joseph U. Frye, of Monongahela, was a valued leader of the health care system since 1968, 10 years before the present MVH opened its doors. He was elected chairman of the Mon-Vale Health Resources’ Board in 1985 and served until 1991 when Mrs. Fran Frye, Monongahela Valley Hospital he was elected chairman of the hospi- president and CEO Louis J. Panza Jr. and MVH Board of Trustees Chairman John D. Fry stand tal’s Board of Trustees. His term as near the plaque they unveiled to more than 150 chairman of the Trustees concluded in friends and family dedicating MVH’s fountain to 1996, but he provided insight and Mrs. Frye’s late husband Joseph. Mr. Frye served guidance to the health system by the hospital health system for 45 years.. remaining a member of both boards until his death.

Mr. Panza, Mr. Frye’s wife Fran, and MVH Board of Trustees Chairman John D. Fry unveiled the cast bronze plaque, which reads, “This fountain is dedicated to the memory of Joseph Urli Frye, our friend and colleague who served as a trustee July 1, 1968 to July 9, 2012 — forever in our thoughts.”

The late Mr. Frye’s leadership extended beyond the hospital. As president of Frye Construction, Inc., and Frye Home Center in Monongahela, he was a successful businessman. Additionally, as a member and officer of various civic, professional and development organizations over the years, he was a respected community leader.

Mon Valley Regional Chamber One of Region's Largest The Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce was recently ranked as the 19th largest chamber of commerce in Southwestern Pennsylvania in The Pittsburgh Business Times. This list is produced annually, and the Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce has been included on this list for the last ten years. The largest chamber is the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce, with 2,000 members.

Six to be Inducted into BVA Football Hall of Fame

Five outstanding alumni players and the current athletic director will be inducted into the Belle Vernon Area Football Hall of Fame this year. Activities honoring the Class of 2013 selections will take place August 30 at James Weir Stadium as part of the varsity football team’s opening game against Uniontown.

The inductees represent teams dating back to the 1960s, and they include Rich Planey, Doug Indof, Greg Shearson, Shaun Baker and Josh Cramer. This year’s special inductee is BVA Athletic Director Jesse Cramer, a familiar name in local athletics and Josh Cramer’s father.

This represents the 14th year that the small group responsible for the BVA Football Hall of Fame will honor outstanding alumni football players, coaches and others who have made significant contributions to the program. They represent predecessor schools to today’s merged BVA School District.

BVA Football Hall of Fame committee members Darrin Belsick, Bill Blick, John Zunic, Stephen Russell, Joe Grata, Jack Fayak, Jeff Antal and Aaron Krepps are already working on next year’s group.

Inductees are profiled in a special booklet that will be sold at the game; their names will be displayed on a press box banner for the entire

season. Plaques will be presented at halftime and a “mixer” will follow at Redd Dawgs in Rostraver.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS YEAR'S BVA FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES: Rich Planey (Class of 1968) – After being knocked out in a game against Brownsville, the two-year starting quarterback for Coach Jimmy Russell’s team returned to throw a 50-yard touchdown pass for a 20-19 win. Following his senior season, Rich was honored as an AllWPIAL performer and also received the conference outstanding leadership award.

Doug Indof (Class of 1978) - A Richard O. Dolfi Scholar Athlete Award recipient, quarterback and defensive end, he led Coach Jeff Petrucci’s 1977 team to a 6-4 record that laid the groundwork for three straight Big 10 championships. After his senior season, Doug was named to the 1977 Big Ten All-Conference Offensive Team and was also a three sport athlete playing football, baseball, and basketball.

Shaun, a three-year letterman, was named to the All Keystone Conference Defensive Team following the successful 1995 season.

Josh Cramer (Class of 2001) – He was a 14-year-old freshman when Dongilli approached him before the first game and said, “You are my quarterback tonight.”

It marked the start of four recordsetting years, including a 99-yard pass to BVA Coach Aaron Krepps in a 2000 game. The four-year letterman and captain was an AllConference selection in 98-99-00 and led the team to four conference titles (97-00).

Jesse Cramer - Part of BVA’s athletic fabric since the early 1980s, he has coached football, wrestling, track and even basketball over the years, presides over preservation of (former Bellmar) Brewer Stadium and has been athletic director since 2004.

Ten Ringgold students recently studied with three of the world's top Scottish harp teachers at the Ohio Scottish Arts School at Oberlin College. While there, they were privileged to study under Corinna Hewitt of Scotland, Sue Richards of Virginia, and Abby Palmer of Maryland. These students are part of the Ringgold Celtic Harp program and are preparing for the National Scottish Harp Competition at the Ligonier Highland Games at Idelwild Park on Saturday, September 21. This event is sponsored by LHG, Scottish Harp Society of America, and Clan Currie.

Ringgold Celtic Harp students play every month in the lobby of the Monongahela Valley Hospital and recently played at the Art in the Park festival in Chess Park in Monongahela.

Busy Bees – Children’s Program at Mingo Creek Park We’ll be busy bees on Thursday, August 8 as we learn about pollination and the important role honeybees play in our environment. Children (ages 5-11) will learn about bees and pollination, taste honey, and even make a beeswax candle to take home.

West Newton Senior Center Plans One-Day Bus Trip The West Newton Senior Center is planning a one-day "Yankee Tyme" Ohio Amish bus trip on September 14. There will be a 7:00 am departure for Ohio.

Sharon Grover will be our guide onto Burton Ohio, where we will tour Century Village, (restored by the Historical Society), Burton Log Cabin for Maple Syrup, Welshfield Inn for lunch, then on to Fowlers Mill and store, End of Commons General store and final stop at the Depot for ice cream. Total price $90. All included, tour, bus, driver tip, lunch and tour tickets. Deadline for registration is August 14. Using Quest Transportation, bus trip will depart from West Newton, at 7:00 AM, Robertson Street behind Giant Eagle. Your full payment is your reservation.

Senior Games Winner!

Congratulations to Ruth Corrin, who participated in 27th Annual Senior Games. She brought home four Gold Medals and two Silver Medals.

Ruth also brought home another win she won the Golf Tournament. Were so proud of you Ruth!

Pillowcase Dresses Donated Recently 23 Pillowcase Dresses were taken to the Dress a Girl around the World project in Scottsdale, AZ. These dresses are made for little girls around the world. The Scottsdale Bible Church is making 50 mission trips this year. Thanks to Mildred Carey

and Donna Irwin who continue to make this mission possible.

Bell Tower Restoration Project The work on the Bell Tower restoration project is on schedule by Yohe Roofing. Additional restoration work is the removal and replacement of bell equipment, restoration of two pinnacles, updating of electrical wiring and lighting in the tower and re-pointing the two pinnacles. Stop by and see what is going on, if you have questions contact the Trustees. Thank you for your support of the bell tower restoration project.

Sinai Baptist Church, 20 Brushton Avenue, Charleroi will hold Vacation Bible School on Monday, August 22 through Friday, August 23 in the Church Fellowship Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided each day along with Bible Stories, crafts and games.
