This year’s event is being called “A Conversation with Women of Distinction” and will honor former Pennsylvania state representative, Kathy Manderino and retired Major General Jessica Garfola Wright, both former Monessenites. With a nod to Monessen’s 115th anniversary, the library wishes to recognize two women who have excelled in government. Kathy Manderino spent eighteen years in the Legislature and Jessica Garfola Wright is currently Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness at the Pentagon. The annual gala is the library’s main fundraiser of the year. Proceeds from the event supplement the library budget, help to maintain services and assist in providing additional programming. The event will feature a buffet dinner of stuffed chicken breast and roast beef, salad, potatoes, and other side dishes, along with dessert. Tickets are $50 and available at the Library or from board members. Seating is limited.

NEWS FROM THE MID-MON VALLEY SHIPMATES The June meeting of the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates featured guest speaker Dr. J.K. Folmar, Professor Emeritus of History, at California University of Pennsylvania, and the president of the Monongahela River Buffs River Museum. Dr Folmar explained that the Mon River is 128 miles long and flows north from West Virginia and proceeded to give a history of the Mon from 1700 to now. Brownsville was the hub in western PA and the gateway to the west and travel was by flatboats, keelboats and then steamboats, with the railroads overtaking the boat travel by the 1850's. For more detailed information, please go to http://monongahelariverbuffs.blogspot.com/2010/04/transportation-history-follows-current.html. The annual Memorial Day parade was well represented by the Shipmates and we thank Myron Speitko, and James Caserta for their services, and the Shipmates who came out to take part in the parade. Commander Bill Hess also thanked all the Shipmates that took part in the Memorial Services in Monessen on May 26. Joe Gallo gave his report for this year's annual picnic. The social hall at St Anthony's Church in Monongahela has been reserved for Sunday, July 28 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Door prizes, bingo, and food to be catered by D&D of Arnold City. Cost to members and one guest is free, however, additional guests will be charged $10. Last year we had a big sheet cake, but this year, it's was suggested to the committee that we ask the attendees to bring in cookies, etc., for desserts. Also, please bring in a small gift to be awarded out during the bingo games. Wayne Vlasic gave his report on organizations that are considered worthy of receiving monetary gifts for the use of veterans. After reading of a list of said organizations, he recommended the Operation Troop Appreciation, located in the Century III Mall. Approximately 99.9% of money's collected goes to the cause. Please go to http://operationtroopappreciation.org/ for more info.

Committee Approves Bill Naming Bridge for Local Marine The Senate Transportation Committee unanimously approved a bill renaming the Route 88 Bridge over Ten Mile Creek for a highly decorated U.S. Marine veteran who was born in nearby Fredericktown. Senate Bill 546, sponsored by Sen. Tim Solobaby, names the new bridge that connects Washington and Greene counties the “Lieutenant General William M. Keys Bridge.” “General Keys is one of the most decorated soldiers ever hailing from Pennsylvania and, in fact, is one of the most successful soldiers in the country,” Solobay said. “He made his hometown proud in service around the world and this bill will make sure his name stays connected to the region.” Born in Fredericktown, Lt. Gen. Keys graduated from West Point and the National War College and served as a Company Commander in Vietnam. By the time Operation Desert Storm was being planned, he was a Commanding General of more than 20,000 Marines and devised a famous “two-axis” attack that General Norman Schwarzkopf called “simply brilliant.” Lt. Gen Keys has been awarded the Navy Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star with Combat "V", two Distinguished Service Medals, the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Cross of Gallantry, Legion of Merit with Combat "V", Defense Meritorious Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1994, after 34 years of service. The 384-foot, $10 million Route 88 bridge was completed a year ago, replacing an older steel truss bridge. It connects East Bethlehem Township, Washington County with Jefferson Township, Greene County. Senate Bill 546 now goes to the full Senate for a vote. It mirrors legislation (House Bill 1002) introduced in the House of Representatives by state Rep. Pam Snyder.

Mr. Rockwell’s presentation was supplemented by photos from the Donora Historical Society’s Bruce Dreisbach collection, as well as vintage newspaper articles. Feel free to view Mr. Rockwell’s website www.eldorapark.com. This is our last formal meeting for the summer, however, the museum will remain open. Our next meeting will be on Monday, September 9, 2013. On another note, over the past three years, the Smog Museum has welcomed visitors from 39 states (including Alaska). We’ve also had visitors from various countries like: Canada, France, Columbia, England, Germany and China. We often have student visitors from local colleges and universities. We take pride in hosting school age children from grade school to graduate school. We’ve hosted Girl Scout, Boy Scout and Cub Scout Troops as well as summer camp groups. brochures with our new website address and phone number, as well as table covers when we take the Donora Historical Society on the road, and last but not least, upgraded display cases to better show our priceless artifacts.

MVRCC Promotes Property Improvement Through Second Grant Program The Charleroi Design Committee operating in conjunction with the Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, has established a Façade Improvement Project II to assist business and property owners in Charleroi’s Central Business District in improving the appearance of the facades of commercial buildings. The funding for the program was secured through the Washington County Local Share Account from gaming revenues. The Chamber distributed $46,000 in the first pool of funding received from the LSA in 2011 and 2012, representing approximately $120,000 in property improvements within the community. Rostraver Landfill Issues Remain Unresolved By Christina Walko
Three Tervita landfill representatives showed up at the Rostraver Commissioner’s meeting on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 armed with charts, graphs and explanations as to why residents are still experiencing the stench at the landfill, located at 200 Connor Lane. Residents fear the landfill is accumulating naturally radioactive byproducts from gas drillings that could cause long-term health hazards to themselves and their families. Tervita Vice President, Micheal S. Woods said that he wanted to take the time to convince people that the landfill is safe, in compliance with all regulations and that every material disposed of at their site is legal. He explained the progress the company is making on installing gas abstraction wells and said the site has doubled the amount of landfill gas they’ve been collecting. But nevertheless, the original issue, the stench in the air, is still present, even stronger now, according to some. “We’ve had to put up with a lot," said Patton Road resident Ema Kotch. "Last week I smelled the chemicals and it seemed worse – we can’t take their word for it.” The twelve or so residents who grilled the Tervita representatives were certainly not taking their word that all is safe. At the very least, they were concerned that the strong stench is causing colds, sore throats, burning eyes, nausea and stress dizziness and are wondering about the long-term health effects. Residents are asking again that independent testing be done and provided the commissioners with a list of potential companies that could be used. Commissioner Andy Temoshenko said the Board would be willing to look into this if the cost was reasonable and invited Wood and his company to share in the cost. A retired environmental consultant, Therese Aigner, was brought in. Ms.
Aigner discussed purported dangers of the cumulative effects of low-level radioactive material at the site. “No one knows something is wrong until they have a physical reaction or their health deteriorates because of radioactivity exposure,” said Aigner. In response to Aigner, Tervita’s John Swalbe said, “That is a lot of good information but it’s about a different industry. We don’t take hazardous waste.” Woods added that nothing the landfill has accepted has been either toxic or hazardous. While Tervita is called a Residual Waste Facility, it does accept trucks containing “TENORM”, (Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material). A truck that contained Marcellus Shale drill cuttings that was turned down at a North Huntington landfill yet was accepted at Tervita was the subject of some controversy at last month’s meeting. Woods clarified that the Tervita landfill could accept the truck only because they are equipped to handle dealing with such disposal safely and under state-mandated regulations. “All trucks must pass a waste approval process and we were able to take that truck only because we were equipped to handle it," said Woods. As to why the smell has been so bad, Rostraver resident Cheryl Meyers attributes it to a 250% increase in the landfills business and to liquid and solid wastes producing chemical reactions. The company says it attempts to layer the waste products so they don’t mix. Dr. George Felder of Lenity School Road has complained of health issues and says that while all may be permissible and legal, some people have compromised immune systems and are not as strong as others. “Between the smell and the chemical reactions going on at your landfill, your contributing to the areas medical problems. And we are the guinea pigs.”

Let's Talk Real Estate by ROGER DOLANCH Broker/Owner
Ease Your Way Into Homeownership For many renters, the first step in buying a home is becoming educated about the process. If you’re like many people considering a home purchase, you’ve spent nights, weekends and maybe even time at work searching the internet or poring over the classifieds looking for a home that will work for you. You’ve talked to friends and relatives about their home buying experiences. Maybe you’ve even conducted a little research to become more familiar with real estate terminology and the various types of common mortgages. Coming up with a down payment and finding a loan program that meets your needs are the greatest hurdles most entry level buyers face. So, you may even have leafed through stacks of brochures and flyers from lenders offering loan programs that seem incom-
prehensible and incredibly complicated. With so many excellent first-time buyer programs to choose from these days, you may feel that you to be an expert to sort through them all. That’s why if you’re a first-time homebuyer seeking a low down payment loan, you’ll save time by talking with a professional real estate agent who is experienced in working with people just like you in the area where you plan to buy. A professional real estate agent can help you determine whether you are likely to qualify for these special programs, as participation in some may be limited to buyers under a certain income level or for the purchase of homes below a certain purchase price. Your agent also will be able to tell you whether you must fulfill other requirements to be considered. With some programs, for example, you must attend an educational seminar before you can be considered for one of these low down payment loans. An agent who frequently assists first-time buyers will know from experience which lenders in your area offer low down payment programs that will most closely match your needs. The lender will need to become familiar with your current financial situation. Before you discuss your options with them, you’ll want to collect some basic information to make the process easier. Be prepared to tell them about your income, assets, debts, credit issues and financial legal issues. This information will help the lender deter-

mine how much home you can afford. A good lender may even be able to suggest ways to remedy negative remarks on your credit report that could disqualify you from a low down payment loan program. In addition, because most lenders will require that you have several months of house payments in the bank as a reserve, your real estate agent may be able to suggest ways you can increase your savings in the weeks and months leading up to your home purchase. Remember that some programs allow you to apply a cash gift from a family member to cover the required down payment and closing costs. Your agent also may know a motivated seller who would be happy to assist you in accomplishing your home purchase by contributing to your closing costs, which will reduce the amount of cash you need to have on hand. With the possibility of interest rates edging up, mortgage financing programs that require a low down payment are even more important than ever to firsttime buyers. A professional real estate agent working with a trusted lender can help youidentify the one loan program that is just right for you. HEALTH GUIDE
Monongahela Valley Hospital Offers Latest Techniques in Cardiac Catheterization It’s been said that the best way to have a good life is to have a good heart. While this phrase can be interpreted to mean the emotional heart, when people suffer from physical heart problems, they can experience chest pain; palpitations commonly known as racing of the heart; shortness of breath; a chronic cough; and excessive sweating — all symptoms that can place limitations on their activities and ultimately reduce their quality of life. Through the use of cardiac catheterization, physicians can learn about the heart and blood vessels to diagnose and treat a host of cardiac problems and diseases. Millions of cardiac catheterization procedures have been performed since the technique was introduced in the mid-20th century. Since that time, the femoral artery in the groin has been the primary entry point for a thin tube that uses the circulatory system to clear blockages, deliver medication and position stents. Approximately 10 percent of the medical centers in the United States, including Monongahela Valley Hospital, have expanded their cardiac catheterization procedures to include the radial artery, located in the wrist, as an entry point to the circulatory system. John Pacella, M.D., a cardiologist affiliated with Monongahela Valley Hospital whose specialty is interventional cardiology, recently explained the benefits of the radial approach. “The femoral artery can be difficult to access in some individuals — particularly those who are overweight,” said

Does your teen need a meningitis shot for college?
At Monongahela Valley Hospital, Dr. John Pacella learns about the newest tubes for performing radial catheterization from Stacey Anderson, a cardiovascular specialist from Cordis Corporation.
Dr. Pacella. “Patients who undergo the radial technique have less bruising and bleeding, fewer complications and faster recoveries. In fact, it’s more comfortable for the patients because they can sit up immediately after the procedure.” By offering the radial catheterization, MVH provides a procedure that is largely available only at larger metropolitan hospitals. Residents of the midMonongahela Valley and surrounding areas can have the procedure performed in familiar surroundings by medical professionals that they know and trust. Dr. Pacella is a member of Century Cardiac Care, Inc. whose cardiologists also include Stephen A. Bowser, M.D., and Simon H. Chough, M.D. The Mon Valley office is located at 1290 Chess Street, Suite 102 in Monongahela. For an appointment, call 724-258-4615.

APPLIANCES Q: Why Should I Buy A Weber Gas Grill? A: The answer extends beyond gas grills to cars, toys, electronics, homes and anything else with a use or exchange value. Quality. Weber balances quality with price and personal accommodations like "Pothole" size, features, color, etc. Many customers walk into Highway Highway Appliances Appliance and declare "I want a Weber grill." When asked, most do not know the models, sizes, features or colors available nor what they would prefer if availability were not an issue. This is because Weber branding has become synonymous with reliable quality and service. Any Weber grill owner who has decided to save a few dollars on a new grill by buying the ever-changing models at the local Big Box store quickly realizes the huge difference in value that a few extra dollars buys. What is it worth to save one hundred dollars if eight months later the ignitor breaks -- and the replacement part does not exist? Every replacement part of a Weber gas grill can be changed and Weber rewards dealers who make repair parts available at the retail level. Weber has been manufacturing barbeque grills for several decades and they never branched off into making tents, lamps or jackets. All they make is BBQ grills and grilling tools, books and accessories. Caring about the food you cook on your Weber is not a marketing gimmick because Weber is a true barbeque company. All they make is BBQ grills and they do it great. Service partners, like Highway Appliance, are set up to provide warranty service on-site for immediate repair of any problem experienced with Weber grill parts. Availability of replacement grill parts is very important as a typical Weber barbeque will be in service for over ten years. Stop in today and check out the quality of a Weber Gas Grill for yourself. 2214 Rt. 88, Dunlevy (Exit 40 off Interstate 70, and just minutes off Rt. 43) 724-326-5616 www.highwayappliance.com
