Farmers Market in West Newton Downtown West Newton Inc. (DWNI) will hold a Farmer’s Market at the new Simeral Square. Simeral Square Saturday’s will feature a farmers market every Saturday in Downtown West Newton on Main and Water Street. The market will start on June 1 and run every Saturday through October 26 from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. Currently, DWNI is seeking vendors to participate in the market. Mon Valley Communities Await the Bridge Reopening Celebration being planned for reopening of Charleroi-Monessen Bridge By Earl Bugaile
It’s been a long four years since the Charleroi Monessen Bridge closed in 2009 because of structural deficiencies. Residents of North Charleroi, as well as Charleroi Borough and Monessen, along with countless others have had to drive the detour to get across the Monongahela River, but the end is now within sight, as PennDOT plans to open the new John K. Tener Memorial Bridge on June 29, and its opening will be a significant event, especially for Lee Hall, the mayor of North Charleroi. “This has been so long in coming, that it will be a relief to everyone,” Hall said. “It’s hurt a number of local businesses as well as residents. Even Stout’s Carpeting had to close because they lost business. It’s really been a hardship for everyone because a trip over the detour took an additional 10 to 15 minutes. It hasn’t been that easy just to get from Charleroi to Monessen.” Hall said he is on a committee of planners organizing a special celebration on Saturday, June 29 to mark the bridge completion. The committee is comprised of people from Monessen, Charleroi and North Charleroi, which will include a possible parade, along with other events. Hall said the committee is planning to invite federal, state and local officials to take part in the celebration. The committee is also planning to publish a commemorative booklet, along with other collectible items marking the occasion. “We are working out all of the details for the celebration, but it’s really going to be a big event, Hall stated. Hall said businesses on both sides of the river in addition to elected officials are being approached to support the commemorative booklet through placing an advertisement.

Monongahela Valley Hospital’s 25th Gala Raises $129,000
Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Vice President of Fund Development shares a moment with emcee Jennifer Antkowiak from KDKA-TV at the hospital’s Gala 25 on May 18.
Over the past 25 years, themes for Monongahela Valley Hospital’s (MVH) annual Gala included everything from a Mexican fiesta to castles and knights, circuses, cowboys and even pirates. But for its 25th Gala on May 18, guests reveled in the charm and sublime elegance of a silver anniversary and its nostalgia for “An Evening to Remember,” at the Westin Convention Center and Hotel in Pittsburgh. Nearly 600 guests attended. The event raised $129,000 and a total of $2.529 million over the last 25 years, according to Sara Schumacher, vice president of Fund Development for MVH. The event, which was sponsored by the Mon-Vale Health Resources Fund Development Committee and MVH’s Office of Fund Development, celebrated one business and three exemplary individuals for their commitment to excellence with Dimensions in Performance Awards. These awards honor the multi-dimensional talents of special friends, benefactors and members of the health care family who have distinguished themselves in the areas of philanthropy, board leadership, medicine and civic well-being. First Federal Savings Bank, represented by its President and CEO Patrick G. O’Brien of Amity, received the 2013 Rose Award for Dimensions in Philanthropy. This award recognizes members of the community for their benevolence and dedication to the enhancement of quality health care. Nirmal D. Kotwal, M.D., of Pittsburgh, received the Sickman-Levin Award for Dimensions in Medicine. Dr. Kotwal serves as Monongahela Valley

Hospital’s director of Pathology. This award honors outstanding physicians who contribute to health care in the mid Mon Valley. Jeff M. Kotula, of Washington, received the 2013 Pallone Award for Dimensions in Board Leadership. Mr. Kotula is the secretary of both Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Board of Trustees and the Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc. Board of Directors (the hospital’s parent company). This award recognizes excellence in service to both boards. Carl Crawley Jr., of New Eagle, received the 2013 Gibbons Award for Dimensions in Community Service. Mr. Crawley is an accomplished local sports figure and coach who has committed his life to helping non-profit organizations from churches and the Scouts to the United Way. This award honors those who are dedicated to the health, social and civic needs of area residents and help to improve the quality of life. “An Evening to Remember” concluded with a coffee bar and one of Pittsburgh’s finest variety bands, Finesse, a 14-piece “Superband” that has opened for Earth, Wind & Fire, Chicago and David Sanborn. Guests danced until midnight.

Free Public Star Parties at Mingo Creek Park Visit the Mingo Creek Park Observatory, for a free public star party. (Donations gladly received.) Weather permitting, view stars, planets, nebula, Iridium Flares, ISS Passes, free planetarium show, etc. Events begin at dusk and end around 10:00 or 11:00 pm. A star party is an invitation to anyone wishing to enjoy and learn more about the wonders of the night sky. At a star party, Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh (AAAP) members setup their personal telescopes and operate the large fixed observatory telescopes and offer visitors the opportunity to view celestial objects. Visitors can bring their own scopes. Other use the occasion to simply view the stars and planets with their own eyes. Star parties begin just before sunset. Celestial events such as meteors, comets or an Aurora Borealis often make our public star parties memorable events. At AAAP star parties our members are happy to answer questions about astronomy, advise on telescope selection, or help guests set up and align their telescope. Monongahela Announces 4th of July Celebration Activities The Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce and the local business owners are proud to continue the Independence Day Celebration. The fireworks extravaganza will be held Thursday, July 4 at the Monongahela Aquatorium. Entertainment will begin at 6 pm with the fireworks display at 9:45 pm. A rain date of July 5 has been scheduled. The firework display will be professionally fired by Starfire Corp. of North Cambria, PA. This event is solely funded by Chamber Members, private donations, service clubs and organizations throughout the community. Various Food Vendors, Game Trailers and glow in the dark products will be available during the evening. No alcoholic beverages are permitted on the premises, no firecrackers and no glow in the dark products may be sold. Members of the Chamber of Commerce will be collecting donations, selling glow products and chances for a 50/50 raffle. The winner of the 50/50 raffle will be announced prior to the fireworks. Residents are strongly reminded to avoid the fireworks display site along Bunola River Road. Local police will be fining all stopped vehicles. The Firework display will not commence until all Federal regulations are adhered to. The US Coast Guard will close the river to all recreational boaters from 9:30 until 10:15 pm. JUNE EVENTS ANNOUNCED AT THE MONONGAHELA AREA LIBRARY The Monongahela Area Library, located at 813 West main Street in Monongahela will be offering the following programs and events during the month of June. For questions or additional information, please contact the library at 724-258-5409.
Children Programs “Questyinz” kicks off on June 1 at the library. Developed by the Allegheny County Library Association in 2012, Questyinz is an online interactive computer game. Children can obtain a game card at the library and log on to play. The game features “Quests” that involve reading topics of the child’s choosing on topics such as sports, animals, mysteries and more than a dozen other. Children who do not have a computer at home will be able to play on library computers. “We’re Holden Puppets” will present a puppet show, “Rodney the Magic Rabbit” on Thursday June 20 at 6:00 p.m. Carnegie Museum will present “Dino-Mite Dinosaurs” at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 24 for preschool, kindergarten and first grade children. At 2:00 p.m. is “Teeth and Claws: Dinosaur Diversities” for children in Grades 2 through 8. Children ages 30 months through 5 years are invited to join Storytime on Wednesday mornings at 11:00 a.m. beginning June 12. For ‘Tweens and Teens, a program called “Beneath the Surface” offers independent guided reading and activities along with group meetings. First meeting is June 13 at 6:00 p.m., but packets are available in advance.
Adult Programs Book Bites, Monongahela Area Library's adult light mystery and fiction book club, will meet on Thursday, June 20 at 1:00 p.m. to discuss "The Shape Shifter" by Tony Hillerman. MID-MON VALLEY SHIPMATES HOLD MAY MEETING The May meeting of the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates was called to order by Commander Bill Hess and after the playing of the Navy Hymn, Rev Fred Pfeil gave the opening prayer and Pat Maloy led the group with the pledge. The meeting was put on hold as Barry Anders introduced Scott Frederick, who gave a very interesting talk about the Cincinnati Mine Explosion that occurred in 1913. The Cincinnati Mine was one of 13 mines that was located between Donora and Monongahela. The explosion was felt valley wide and is numbered as the 6th worst mine disaster in America. Of the approximately 250 miners that particular day, 97 miners were killed and 3 are still unaccounted for. The miners were in mine shafts a mile and a half deep at the time of the explosion. Mr. Frederick displayed a map of the area at that time and gave the locations of these sites as of today. Mr. Frederick entertained a Q&A upon conclusion of this disaster. After Cdm Bill Hess welcomed back to the meeting of Elmer Truskey, Noel Sawyer and Joe Acton, Shipmate Elmer Truskey thanked the shipmates for their donation to his family during the time of their need and Shipmate Acton expressed his sincere thank you for all the cards, phone calls and visitations during his time of illness. Fred Owens reported for the Washington County Veterans committee. If any veteran hasn't had a physical taken in the last 2 years, they will lose their eligibility for benefits and he recommended that they go to the VA
Hospital for same. The VA will also help you look for job placement. Flag day services will be held on June 14 at the Chess Memorial Park Gazebo at 7:00 pm. Shipmates are requested to be there by 6:30 pm, Summer uniforms with bib. Marshall Lignian reported that the Flag Committee has three more schools scheduled for this year and that will conclude the program for the 2012-13 school year. George Hutchko reported that Flag Burning will be conducted on Friday the 11 at 1:00 pm at the American Legion Home. Yeoman Caldwell reported that 9 members have not paid their dues for this year. George Essey reported for Joe Gallo on the picnic situation for this year. The indoor picnic in the hall at St Anthony is not available this year due to the fact that church service has resumed at St Anthony. The picnic grounds is available on Saturday and/or the hall is available on Sunday. After a discussion, it was moved and approved to hold the indoor picnic in the hall on Sunday, July 28, from 2 to 5 pm. A letter was received from Jonathan Baker, a Boy Scout from Belle Vernon, who has made his community project to refurbish the Army Tank, including the immediate area around the tank, located in the Monessen City Park, and is asking for monetary assistance. This is one requirement that he has to complete to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. A motion was made and approved to donate $200.00 to this young Boy Scout for his project.

When you ask someone who has received medical care at Monongahela Valley Hospital about the quality of their care, one of the first comments you will hear is “the nurses are so compassionate.” It takes a special type of person to be a nurse and MVH hires men and women who are among the best in their profession. In celebration of National Nurses Week, May 6-12, MVH hosted a breakfast to honor its nurses. During the event, Mary Lou Murt, senior vice president of Nursing, presented the 2013 Cameos of Caring® Award to Tony Cintron, RN, progressive care unit. This prestigious award is presented annually by the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Nursing to honor exceptional bedside nurses who work in acute care hospitals. Nurses throughout Western Pennsylvania nominate their co-workers who demonstrate excellence in nursing care, serve as advocates for patients and families and embody the essence of the nursing procession. “Tony was nominated by his fellow nurses because he brings cheer and hope to his patients,” said Mrs. Murt. “He shows excellent leadership skills with patients, families and staff members, and acts as a mentor for students and new nurses. Tony is always willing to help others and he is respected by his colleagues.” Nine MVH nurses were nominated for the Cameos of Caring Award. Mr. Newman is a committed nurse who tries to help others regardless of what it takes to make it happen. He serves as a resource to all new nurses. • Winona Redd, RN, Intensive Care Unit. Ms. Redd is known among patients for having a “soft touch” but among her peers she is known for having an inner strength that fuels her devotion to nursing. • John Spencer, RN, Coronary Care Unit. Mr. Spencer’s communication skills enable him to effectively interact with patients, families and co-workers; and his kindness is a source of emotional support. • Nancy Williamson, RN, SameDay Surgery. Ms. Williamson is described by her co-workers as a nurse who is committed to excellence and provides leadership and has a great impact on patients and families. • Michelle Zeni, RN, Emergency Department. Ms. Zeni can adapt very quickly to the ever-changing, fastpaced atmosphere of emergency medicine. • Cheryl Zippay, RN, Behavioral Health Unit. Residents of West Pike Township and their children spent the morning of April 27 cleaning debris along the roads from Bentleyville to Daisytown. Many bags of trash, tires, and debris were left at the road sides for pick up. At noon, everyone met for a pizza lunch and refreshments. Packets of daisy seed for residents to plant were also distributed. Although the work was tedious, all had a great time working together to help make the community a better place to live. Student Government Day for senior students of Charleroi Area School District was held on Friday, April 19, and was sponsored by the Charleroi Borough. Students spent the day at the borough and assumed the positions necessary to govern the borough and to take the responsibilities of various borough departments. The day began with a welcome by Mayor Nancy Ellis and Borough officials, an introduction of student officials and a mock council meeting. Teacher sponsors accompanying the students were Mr. Joe Grodz and Mr. Martin Matyas. The luncheon took place at the American Legion Post with Frank Paterra serving as Master of Ceremonies. Charleroi Mayor, Nancy Ellis, introduced the following officials of Washington County who were in attendance, such as Pete Daley, Pennsylvania State Representative; Diana Irey-Vaughn, County Commissioner; Sam Ramano, Sheriff: Mike Namie, Controller; Debbie Bardello, Recorder of Deeds; and Gene Vittone, District Attorney.

Save the Date! Car Cruise and Picnic Fundraiser to be Held in West Newton Downtown West Newton is planning a Car Cruise for Saturday, July 27 at Vine Street Park from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm. Trucks and motorcyclists are welcome to participate, rain or shine. Dash plaques will be given to the first fifty cruisers. Music, games and refreshments. The general public is encouraged to participate and show your support of the hard work and dedication that the car owners put into their vehicles to preserve a little of the American history. Following the car cruise there will be a summer picnic fundraiser that will be held at Gary's Chuckwagon. Tickets may be purchased at the Chuckwagon in advance for $10 or $12 at the door. Tickets for the picnic will also be available at the refreshment stand at the car cruise. Our car cruisers will be given a $2 discount if they would like to attend the picnic. California Earth Day Clean Up and Community Celebration
The organizers, community members and Borough of California are very pleased to extend a huge thank you to those who came out to the "Community Clean Up" on April 22. Without the gracious donation of your time and energy, this event would not have been able to make such a great impact on our community. We know picking up trash and recycling isn’t glamorous, but it is important and definitely appreciated by all! The California Earth Day Community Clean up has some amazing results to share from our day out on the town… We recycled: 7 bins of plastic 2.5 bins of Aluminum
2 bins of glass 1 bin of cardboard 5 quarts of motor oil 1 bin cardboard/paperboard 16 of the 22 grates around the trees on Wood and Third streets were cleared of leaves and debris. (A big thanks to the Borough of California maintenance crew for their help!) 106 volunteers gave their time on Monday April 22, to help make the Borough of California cleaner and safer. Hundreds of cigarette butts, broken glass, and other items were cleared from the streets! 43 bags of trash, 13 tires, a window frame, a fence post, a steel sign post (with sign attached), a metal chair, a car bumper, a license plate, a hub cap, a hamster cage (with wheel and food dish), metal wire fence, 2 8foot long drain tubes were all hauled away! We hope to see you all again next Earth Day for another day of fun, sun, and service. You really proved that many hands make light work!

Monongahela Valley Hospital Helps Area First Responders Monongahela Valley Hospital recently donated four first responder kits to the Carroll Township and Monongahela police departments to equip the local police cruisers with emergency first aid supplies. The sturdy, compact kits contain supplies one might need when arriving first on the scene of an accident, such as a CPR mask, Emergency Department Medical Director Dr. Brenda instant glucose, bandages, cold Walther and ED Director Kelly Macheska, RN, BSN, packs, a stethoscope, distilled open the first aid kits with Carroll Twp. Police Chief Paul Brand and Monongahela Police Chief Brian Tempest. water, blood pressure cuff, ace bandages, gloves and a flashlight to examine eyes. “We learned through Carl Crawley Jr. (MVH Board of Trustees and Board of Directors member) that the Monongahela police had received first aid training but did not have the supplies in their vehicles in case of an emergency,” said Linda Zidek, BSN, RH, PHRN, pre-hospital coordinator for MVH. “Because we also work so closely with Carroll Twp. Police, we decided to put kits together for both departments.”

Volunteer ‘Meet & Greet’ Event on June 8 at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum is welcoming new volunteers! The Museum will hold an informational Volunteer “Meet & Greet” event on Saturday, June 8 beginning at 9:30 am for those interested in getting involved. Volunteers dedicated to preserving the Trolley Era largely staff our nonprofit, educational Museum. Volunteers are crucial to our growth and the museum would not exist without them. Master Sgt. Haigh, Sr. to Speak at Monessen Public Library Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center will welcome retired Air Force Chief Master Sgt. John L. Haigh, Sr. as a special guest speaker on Saturday, June 1 at 1:00 pm. Haigh witnessed world history in his thirty year military career. He served as chief steward for U.S. Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, as well as part of Jimmy Carter’s Air Force One crew. In his service to the presidency, he logged almost 10,000 hours and traveled to Europe, Asia and the Middle East. In his capacity as chief steward, Haigh served the nation’s leaders, first families, world leaders and celebrities. He will speak on the historic figures he encountered and answer audience questions during his talk.

River of the Year Award Ceremony The official award presentation ceremony naming the Monongahela River as the PA 2013 River of the Year takes place on June 1 at the wharf in Brownsville. The official PA River of the Year poster will be unveiled at 1:00 p.m. in the company of state officials. A celebration will follow at the Sons of Italy, 16 Race Street, Brownsville, PA 15417. Both events are open to the public. RSVP for the reception and celebration is requested to 724-785-9331. The River of the Year contest, administered by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers (POWR) declared the Monongahela River the winner following online public voting this past January. A local organization, the Brownsville Area Revitalization Corporation (BARC), nominated “the Mon,” as it is known locally, and the River Town Program joined efforts to get local community members to cast their votes. The River of the Year Program is additionally supported by the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency, the Greene County Tourism Promotion Agency and the Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau through the Fayette County Tourism Grant Program.
About the River Town Program The River Town Program is an asset-based community development initiative aimed at assisting distressed communities bordering navigable rivers to help them develop outdoor recreation as an alternative economic driver. The program is based on grassroots community involvement, recognizing the river as an asset with potential to attract visitors, a critical factor leading to greater conservation. National Pike Festival Celebrates Heritage of Route 40 By Alice Harris
The National Pike Festival was celebrated the weekend of May 18-19 at various sites all along Route 40 including Claysville, Washington, Scenery Hill, and Centerville in Washington County. The National Road (Route One of the highlights of the National Pike Festival is the 40) began in 1811 at reinactment of the Wagon Train which travels Route 40 Cumberland, MD to eventually from site to site. PSAB Honors Charleroi's Mark Alterici The Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs (PSAB) recently announced the recipients of the Association’s prestigious service awards. Charleroi Borough Council President Mark Alterici was among the group honored at PSAB’s 102nd Annual Conference, which was held in Hershey. Mark Alterici, Council Member of Charleroi Borough received a Thomas F. Chrostwaite Award for 20 years of service to the borough. Initiated in 1956, the Thomas F. Chrostwaite Award is given annually to promote interest in borough government and to recognize faithful and effective service Mark Alterici by borough officials. Named in honor of the founder and first president of the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs, this award is given to mayors, council members, secretaries, managers and treasurers who have completed 20 or more years of borough service.

NEWS FROM THE DONORA HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Donora Historical Society welcomed Mr. Joshua Scully from Uniontown on Monday, May 6, who presented the story behind the D.L. Clark Candy Company and their influence on the Pittsburgh region. The D.L. Clark Candy Company is mostly known by its signature piece of candy – the Clark Bar. This presentation was originally to have occurred in February, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather. Our final presentation before our summer hiatus will occur on Monday, June 3 and will feature Mr. Rich Rockwell, a one-time Mon Valley resident, who will visit from New Jersey. Mr. Rockwell is an expert on Eldora Park history from its inception, to when it closed as Charwood. Mr. Rockwell’s presentation will also be supplemented by photos from the Donora Historical Society’s Bruce Dreisbach collection, as well as newspaper articles. Feel free to get a preview of what is expected to be presented by viewing Mr. Rockwell’s website www.eldorapark.com. If you are curious to know what Eldora Park was all about, including its’ roller coaster, you won’t want to miss this presentation. Speaking of Bruce Dreisbach, the Donora Historical Society announced that it received a matching grant from the State of Pennsylvania, through the Rivers of Steel Heritage Area in Homestead, to continue our ongoing effort to have our Dreisbach glass plate negatives developed into actual photos. The basis of the money that was matched was a generous donation in the name of the late Steven Acsai - a 1933 graduate of Donora High School and one of Jimmy Russell's boys who played football for the Dragons and earned a scholarship to North Carolina State. Mr. Acsai's son from North Carolina, also named Steven, never forgot where his father came from and took an interest in the Society and our Dreisbach collection and made the donation in his father's honor in 2012. A group of 200-300 negatives will be selected this summer and transported to Bernies Photo Center and Photo Antiquities museum located on the North Shore of Pittsburgh to have this project completed. If you are interested to learn more about our “Dreisbach Photos”, please consult our website. In April, the Society hosted Root Sports of Pittsburgh who came to Donora to do a feature on Stan “The Man” Musial. The story was shown during the April 17 broadcast of the St. Louis Cardinals vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates game that was shown on the MLB Network and Root Sports of St. Louis. If you missed the game on TV, we are expected to receive a DVD of the broadcast. Mon Chamber to Host "Dancing with Our Stars" The Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Arthur Murray Dance Studio in the South Hills presents "Dancing with Our Stars" on Saturday, June 15, 2013. Charleroi Community Day and Fireworks Planned for July 3rd Plans have been finalized for Charleroi’s Annual Community Day and Fireworks Celebration on July 3. The event will be expanded this year to include a “Salute to First Responders Parade”, children’s area, and all-day music. The J.K. Tener Library will operate a children’s area in the Market House from 12:00 noon to 8:00 PM complete with a bounce house, face painting, magic show, crafts and kids fun! Kids can also decorate their bikes in a patriotic theme and ride in the parade. The area will also feature cotton candy, snow cones and library card sign-up. Magic City Square will showcase entertainment for the entire day and into the evening. A luncheon concert will start the day featuring Blue Light Studio and Nashville recording artists “The Hobbs Sisters” from 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM. The polka band “Mon Valley Push” will be on stage from 3:00 - 6:00 PM. The annual appearance by the Mon Valley Superstars and local dancers will be from 6:30 - 7:30 PM. The live music will wrap up with an appearance by the area’s hottest country band “Saddle Up” from 7:30 until 9:45 PM. “Car Cruise” areas will be reserved from 7:00 until 9:30 PM in 3 Downtown Parking Lots and on 5th Street. Car Clubs who would like to reserve a lot can contact the Borough at 724-483-6011. Fireworks will take place at 9:45 PM by VFI Fireworks Inc. followed by a Beach Party complete with sand and water from 10:00 until 11:00 PM Food booths will be available along Bosson Way in the Chamber Plaza. Members of Girl Scout Troop 54087 Receive Silver Award Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania recently honored local Girls Scouts Gabrielle Fronzaglio, Rachael Funtal, Sarah Grandinette,Caitlin Painter and Hannah Williams with the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest recognition for achievement in Girl Scouting at the Cadette level (girls 11-14). The girls are from local scout troop 54087 from the Ringgold area. The Troop's 60 hour Silver Award project began in September, 2012 and was completed on May 9, 2013. Through a leadership project, the girls wanted to address the issue of stereotypes and the elderly. When they discovered that there was a need for visitations and social activities at a local nursing center, the girls used resources wisely by choosing a craft project each month and creating enough crafts to personally deliver one to each resident of the nursing home and spend some time getting to know the residents to enact a direct sustainable change in their community. The girls also put together a book of craft and activity ideas for the center to use to encourage other scouting groups to come and visit and share their time and talents.As Girl Scout members for the last 8 years, the girls were supported in their Silver Award efforts by troop leaders Flora Funtal and Tracy Grandinette, and were advised by Havencrest Nursing Center Activities Assistant Jeannette Sollars.
NEWS FROM THE GREATER MONESSEN HISTORICAL SOCIETY Croatian Picnic Planned A Croatian Take-out Picnic fundraiser will be held at the Monessen Heritage Museum on Saturday, June 8 from 12:00 noon until 5:00 pm to benefit the Greater Monessen Historical Society. Tickets will be $10.00 each and include a beverage, sandwich (hot dogs or kielbasa), sauerkraut, Croatian chili and dessert (a piece of apple or cheese strudel or small bag of cookies). The Croatian Exhibit will be on display through the month of June. Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. Evening hours by appointment. The summer exhibit will focus on the Monessen City School District. Anyone having items or photographs showcasing either the public or parochial schools of the city are asked to loan or donate them to the Heritage Museum. James L. Gallina Celebrates 100th Birthday Belle Vernon resident James L. Gallina celebrated his 100th birthday on May 2, 2013. Gallina was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Canada on May 2, 1913. He was the fourth oldest of ten children. During the depression he moved to Pittsburgh, to live with his aunt and uncle and find work. He was drafted in the US Army in December 1942 and became a US citizen the following June. After the war he stayed in PA and began working at Continental Can Co. He worked there for 30 years, and lived all that time in the YMCA. Upon retirement he moved to Belle Vernon. James L. Gallina Gallina has many nieces and nephews living in Canada and the USA. He also has a sister, Gemma, 92 years old living in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Canada. Gallina's neighbors and friends held a 100th birthday celebration for him on Saturday, May 4. In attendance at the party were 47 relatives from out of town and 12 close neighbors and friends. His sister and two other nieces were even on Skype with him! A wonderful time was had by all. Gallina was the most gracious, appreciative guest of honor He didn’t miss one minute of his celebration. He enjoyed all the stories, pictures and reminiscing.
Monongahela Valley Hospital honored it employees, medical staff and board during the organization’s 41st Annual Service Awards Dinner on May 6 Dale Varega was the recipient of at the Willow Room in the Mon-Vale HealthPLEX the 2013 Edward J. Protin in Rostraver. Memorial Award Dale Varega, of Monongahela, received the 2013 Edward J. Protin Memorial Award, one of the hospital’s most prestigious honors. Those eligible for the Protin Award have served the hospital for at least a decade, exhibited significant contributions to the health care system over and above what is required, and demonstrated the qualities of leadership, loyalty, compassion and empathy. Mr. Varega serves as a soccer coach; youth group counselor and food bank volunteer at his church, the Library Baptist Church Crossroads Ministries; he mentors students from local high schools and trade schools about health care careers and he donates regularly at American Red Cross blood drives. He is a graduate of Monessen High School and attended Penn State New Kensington. He received an Associate degree and his American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certifications. He did his clinical at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh and worked at St. Margaret’s in Aspinwall before coming to MVH, where he has worked for 28 years. Another highlight of the evening was presenting the Diamond Award to employees, medical staff and board with 25 years of service. In addition, the hospital honored 15 staff who had 20 years of service; 28 staff with 15 years of service; 32 staff members with 10 years and 70 with five years. MVH leaders also honored 21 recent retirees and remembered 18 members of the hospital family who passed away during the last year.

GRC Holds 2013 Recognition Dinner A great evening of recognition, celebration and honor for a business and two individuals of our community marked another successful event for the Greater Rostraver Chamber. The annual Recognition Dinner was held at the Willow Room in Rostraver Twp on Thursday, April 18, 2013. With 108 guests in attendance, GRC President Keith Peer served as the Master of Ceremonies. The Chamber expanded their honor of one individual to three separate categories several years ago. The Honorees for this year were Valley Veterinary Services as the Business of the Year, John Maisch as the Volunteer of the Year and Jim Fowler as the Young Professional of the Year. The selection of Business of the Year uses specific criteria of outstanding community support, involvement and leadership in the community. Dr. Frank Bartus opened Mon Valley Veterinarian on Route 201in 1963. His daughter, Michelle Bartus, and her husband, Dr. Peter Nelson, celebrate 50 years of business in the same location and 29 years in the veterinary business together as husband and wife. Valley Veterinary Service was the first American Animal Hospital Association approved veterinary facility in the area, having gone through a rigorous inspection program to bear the prestigious title “AAHA Approved” in 2006. The Chamber has many volunteers from different segments of businesses and/or organizations. Our selection of John Maisch was recognition of his many commitments and achievements through the years. Our honoree graduated from Ohio University in 1954 and moved on to serve as lieutenant in the army for two years. Then he began a career with General Motors Corp. His last assignment was Director of Salary Personnel at GM’s Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, where he retired in 1987 after 33 years of service. He moved to Rostraver in 1993 when he married Barbara. Where ever he resided, he became involved with the community and church services. Of his many commitments, his volunteer work with Jefferson Regional Hospital, Rostraver Public Library and Concord United Methodist Church stand out. Our Young Professional of the Year

Three Mon Valley Area Libraries to Offer A Unique Summer Reading Program Three Mon Valley area libraries are joining with the Allegheny County Library Association (ACLA), a federated library system of 45 independent libraries, including the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, to offer “Questyinz” an innovative addition to traditional summer reading programs. The Bentleyville, Donora and Monongahela libraries will offer this new program beginning on June 1. An online learning game, Questyinz invites K-5 students to actively pursue a journey of discovery through encounters with books, educational websites, and real-world experiences through quests. A student’s adventure begins with a visit one of the participating libraries to get a Questyinz game card. Once students receive their card, they can play all summer long by visiting www.Questyinz.com. Through Questyinz, students choose avatars and complete discovery quests to earn badges and points towards virtual rewards for their clubhouse. Students can choose from a myriad of topics in 17 categories, including ones which feature local themes. YOUR HEALTH MVH Nurse Honored for Mission Work Operating Room nurses help bring comfort to many people who will never know the names or faces of these dedicated health care professionals who play a significant role in helping to restore their health. Steve Stache, R.N., an Operating Room nurse at Monongahela Valley Hospital, is one of those silent heroes. Mr. Stache was surprised to receive recognition from an MVH physician during the hospital’s National Nurses Week celebration breakfast on May 9 for his contributions to the health and well-being of people throughout the world. Mr. Stache accompanied Vasu N. Malepati, M.D., an otorhinolaryngologist, and Chito M. Crudo, M.D. a general surgeon, on a medical mission to the Philippines in 2011. “The award came as a complete surprise to me. ’I've worked with Dr. Malepati and Dr. Crudo for years and always wanted to volunteer for medical missions,” said the award recipient. “About four or five years ago I signed up for a mission but had to postpone it. When I was presented with the opportunity to travel to the Philippines with the two MVH physicians, the timing was perfect. It was a very rewarding experience. The staff of our hospital should feel very proud to know that supplies we took with us were put to great use in helping to treat the people

GASTROENTEROLOGY Q: What does the Specialty of Gastroenterology involve?
A: Gastroenterology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine concerning the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive system. The latter includes the intestinal tract (which consists of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, and rectum) and three major digestive organs : the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
Q: What type of work is done by gastroenterologists at an Ambulatory Surgery Center?

A: Most of the work done here involves diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for diseases of the esophagus, stomach, and colon. One common procedure is called an EGD in which a thin optical tube connected to a television monitor is passed through the patient's mouth to examine the stomach, all done under conscious sedation. Common conditions such as reflux disease and peptic ulcer disease are easily diagnosed in this examination, and biopsies can be obtained to determine if cancer is present. Another procedure frequently performed is Colonoscopy. In this case, a long flexible scope is passed thru the rectum and guided thru the colon, under direct visualization on the television monitor. Common conditions such as colitis, diverticulosis, benign polyps, and colon cancer are diagnosed in this manner. Polyps can be removed with electrocautery techniques to prevent their developing into cancer. Patients undergoing Colonoscopy are required to cleanse their colon with a bowel prep taken the day prior to examination Both procedures are performed comfortably with IV sedatives administered by the Department of Anesthesia.
Q: How are endoscopic procedures scheduled? A: Patients either request the examinations themselves, or are referred by their primary care physicians. Sometime it is recommended that the patients meet their endoscopist durind an office visit prior to the procedure, but in some case this is not necessary and the patient can meet the endoscopist the morning of the examination. In some cases preoperative laboratory testing and an EKG might be required before the procedure. All patients must provide a driver because the sedation makes driving a vehicle unsafe.

Each spring the Monongahela Women’s’ Club throws a tea party for the girls of the current senior graduating class at Ringgold High School. On Friday, April 26 there was a parade of well-dressed young ladies making their way into the Monongahela Volunteer Fire Department Social Hall. The hall was filled with the senior girls, members of the Women’s’ Club and guests. There was tea of course and more cookies than even that crowd could finish off. The girls had a great time socializing with each other and taking photos. Very large mounted photos of Ringgold’s various grade schools had been arranged on the walls so groups of students could have their photos taken with their old school as a background. With the exception of commencement – this may have been the last opportunity this senior class of girls would have to be together. 2013 Senior Games - Not Just For Athletes Event Slated for June 19 If you are 50 years of age or older and you reside in Washington, Fayette or Greene Counties, or you are a member of a senior center within these counties, make plans to take part in the 27th annual Senior Games on Wednesday, June 19, at the Charleroi Area High School, 100 Fecsen Drive, Charleroi. The Parade of Athletes and Opening Ceremonies begin at 9:00 a.m. in the amphitheater. Immediately after the parade, the public is encouraged to join in the opening when the vintage version of the song, “Great Balls of Fire” begins to play and marchers and spectators give their own demonstration of a one-minute Senior Flash Dance. Morning coffee, orange drink, cookies, doughnuts, and fresh fruit, courtesy of the Southwestern PA Area Agency on Aging, McDonalds of Charleroi, Keystone Bakery and Fisher Heights Giant Eagle, will be available for the athletes and spectators before and immediately after the opening. Individual competitions, which include the one-mile walk, 50-yard dash, basketball toss, bocce, casting, football throw, horseshoes, putting, shuffleboard, soft-
ball throw, and stationary bike, will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until approximately 3 p.m. In addition to the competitions, there will be ongoing stage entertainment in the air conditioned school auditorium, crafts, and homemade food in the cafeteria, Super Bingo, and a PrimeTime Health Fair where vendors will offer free health screenings, gifts, prize drawings and information on programs and services available to older adults. Don’t miss the chance to stop at the Pennsylvania Lottery Association table located in the health fair area. A record number of scratch-off Lottery and combined ticket prizes will be given to each person 18 years of age or older who visits the Lottery table. Stop to see the Pickle Radio 99.3 live remote Senior Games broadcast, sponsored by Serenity Farms, Inc. The event, which is open to the public at no charge, attracts approximately 700 participants and spectators. Although admission is free, there is a $1 registration fee, per athletic event, to compete. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded at the Senior Games. St. Damien of Molokai to Hold Summer Fest and Flea Market Summer Fest! St. Damien Parish Park, 1st and Main St., Monongahela will hold their Summer Fest on June 21 - 23.
