JK Tener Library in Charleroi Raises $2,500 with ‘Sweets and Treats’ Business Crawl Fundraiser On March 11, 2014, Fat Tuesday came to the Mon Valley to support a great cause. The John K. Tener Library in Charleroi kicked off the Fat Tuesday Sweets and Treats Business Crawl by serving champagne with strawberries and cream and handing out Mardi Gras beads to attendees.

The library was the first stop on the crawl, which featured over 20 businesses, almost twice as many as last year’s business crawl, Salons and Saloons. The ‘no open container law’ was disbanded for the evening so participants were free to walk from business to business with the many different drinks offered. Every business offered something different from rum punch and cookies at Armando’s to Rego’s ‘Hippie Juice’ and homemade potato chips. There was something for everyone.

The crawl ended at the Riverhouse, where baskets had been donated to be given out by Chinese auction along with a chance to win half-the-take and the three featured prizes of the event, which were also donated. The grand prize was an overnight stay and spa treatment at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, second prize was four tickets to an upcoming Penguins game, compliments of Lee Supply Co., and third prize was a gift certificate to MarBill Jewelers.

Approximately 290 people participated and close to $2,500 was raised for the library. Another business crawl to benefit the library is scheduled to take place in August 2014. Hop on the Bunny Trolley at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum Join us as the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum opens for the season with one of our favorite events, “Bunny Trolley.” Ride a beautifully restored antique trolley to see the Easter Bunny on Friday, Saturday and Sunday April 11 - 13 and Friday and Saturday April 18 and 19 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Ongoing activities include an Easter egg hunt, a springtime craft activity, 4-H’s live rabbits and a photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny.

Trolley rides leave every 20 minutes with the last ride leaving the platform at 4 p.m.

Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors (62+), $7 for children (ages 1-15), under 1 are free. Admission also includes an introductory film on the Trolley Era, photo exhibits and a tour of some of our streetcars.

This year, we celebrated our 60th Anniversary of the first three streetcars arriving at the museum site in February 1954. The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum opened to the public nine years later in 1963 in order to communicate the story of Pennsylvania’s Trolley Era. Currently the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum has 50 historic electric railway vehicles and is maintained and operated by over 150 volunteers and a small paid staff.

The museum is open to the public from April 4 through December 14. Hours are Friday, Saturday, Sunday during April and May and September through December. The museum is open 7 days a week between Memorial Day and Labor Day. For group tours and educational field trips please call or email for more information. PRO WRESTLING EVENT - service members and military veterans will be admitted free to the first professional wrestling event held in the Cal U Convocation Center arena, “Salute to the Troops” at 7 p.m.

New Eagle Riverfront Park Offers Amenities for Group Gatherings The New Eagle Riverfront Park is a quaint local park located on the banks of the Monongahela River in New Eagle.

It offers a wide range of amenities for picnics, weddings, graduation parties, and scouting events, including a boat launch and dock, picnic pavilions, kitchen, bathrooms, receptacles for crock pots, a brand new deck overlooking the river, campsites, playground, basketball court, large horseshoe pit and ample parking.

Donora Historical Society Schedules Lectures on Donora Southern Railroad, Cincinnati Mine Disaster; Baseball Legend Ron Necciai Our presentations will return back to the Smog Museum on Monday, April 7.

Due to inclement weather, our March 3rd presentation was canceled.

Following March, the remaining spring lineup will include: the Donora Southern Railroad on Monday, April 7; the Cincinnati Mine disaster or DonoraWebster Bridge on Monday, May 5; and finally, local baseball legend Ron Necciai on Monday, June 2.

The Donora Southern Railroad was a dedicated rail line that serviced the entire footprint of American Steel and Wire, and Zinc Works, and the surrounding area. Donora Southern actually had 20 to 30 miles of track that zigzagged around the mill site and along the river past Palmer Park. The Donora Southern Railroad presenter will be local railroad enthusiast Tom Crespo, whose presentation will be supplemented by artifacts and photos from the Donora Historical Society.

The Cincinnati Mine was located in nearby Courtney, just north of New Eagle on the Monongahela River. 101 years ago in April of 1913, 98 miners died in a mine explosion that shook the Mon Valley. The Cincinnati Mine disaster presenter will be Ringgold school teacher Scott Frederick.

The Donora-Webster Bridge was constructed in 1908, and while it still stands, it is no longer in use to auto or foot traffic. To honor the bridge before it is razed either this year or next, our

museum curator Brian Charlton we will be showing photos, artifacts and blueprints of the 106-year-old structure.

Local baseball legend, Ron Necciai, was born in nearby Gallatin, just across the river and slightly north from Donora, and is best remembered for the unique feat of striking out 27 batters in a nine-inning game, which he accomplished in the Class-D Appalachian League on May 13, 1952 during a nohitter. He is the only pitcher ever to do so in a nine-inning, professional-league game. Ron also played for the hometown Pittsburgh Pirates in 1952. Ron will share his stories and experiences of growing up in the Mon Valley and playing professional baseball.

On Monday, February 24, the Society hosted a busload of 20 Clairton middle school students, teachers and chaperones for a tour of the Smog Museum to get ideas for their after-school projects on air quality and pollution.

Mark the Date for Monongahela Valley Hospital’s 26th Gala Employees, physicians and friends of Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) — and its parent company Mon-Vale Health Resources (MVHR) — will celebrate one of the organization’s most nostalgic and anticipated traditions: the Annual Gala, on Saturday, May 17.

The theme for the 26th Gala is “Jungle Cruise.” The black-tie fundraiser benefits MVH, one of only a few dozen independent, non-profit community hospitals in western Pennsylvania.

How Sweet the Sound: Up-and-Coming Teen Christian Artist Performs at “Sweet Sunday” Fundraising Event

On Sunday, February 9th, the Washington City Mission held its 20th annual ‘Sweet Sunday’ fundraising event at Hilton Garden in South Pointe. This event is a giant dessert festival with auctions and kids’ crafts, live Christian music, and fun for the entire family.

Appearing at the event was upcoming new Christian artist, Kiana Levi. She showcased her music by performing a 45-minute set all on her own. Levi’s selection was a variety of handKiana Levi picked songs along with a few of her own original songs from her new, self-titled album.

Levi noted that she has been singing “since she was little” but has made her gift a priority the last two years. As a senior in high school, she shows much maturity in her music and in her personal life. She stated, “I love the feeling of connecting with a song, and connecting and encouraging others with God.” Singing has become her outlet of “expressing what cannot be said with words alone.”

Kiana Levi, the album, was available for sale at Sweet Sunday. Levi donated $2 to the Washington City Mission from every CD she sold at Sweet Sunday. To preview Levi’s songs or for more information, the album is available at tatepublishing.com.

Hoodie Hoo Day a Success as Charleroi Mayor Proclaims Beginning of Sunny Skies

On Feb. 20, Charleroi Chamber of Commerce held the first-ever Hoodie Hoo Day at 11:30 a.m. in Charleroi. The events were kicked off by DJ Donn Henderson. Executive Director, Debra Keefer, Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, hosted the event, which brought a crowd of excited “hoo-ers” in unusual hats and brightly colored clothes.

According to legend, snowy and treacherous weather will be no more, as the festivities are said to chase away dreary winter weather.

Businesses offered discounts and restaurant specials. Rego’s Restaurant held a Happy Hour beginning at 5 p.m. and thanks went to the JK Tener Library for providing hot chocolate and the

The crowd counted down the minutes until noon, when Mayor John Mollenauer was scheduled to make the official Hoodie Hoo proclamation. They counted 10, 9, 8, 7…and everyone yelled “Hoodie Hoo” three times. DJ Henderson yelled, “First Hoodie Hoo, and you were here!”

The Mayor stated, “I do hereby declare that Feb. 20 is Hoodie Hoo Day. I proclaim that merriment and sunny skies will begin!”

Washington County Farm Bureau Makes Donation to Ronald McDonald House The Washington County Farm Bureau recently made a donation to the Ronald McDonald House in Pittsburgh. Lisa Wherry, WCFB's Women's Committee Chair, traveled to the RMH on February 18th to make the donations in honor of Food Checkout Day. Food Checkout Day is the day of Lisa Wherry, third from left, presents a check to the Ronald McDonald House in Pittsburgh along the year when the average with members of other area farm bureaus.

American has earned enough money to feed his family for the year.

"We began supporting the RMH several years ago," Wherry said, "and this year we donated $350 worth of money and supplies. We have a paper-recycling bin located at 84 Agway that helps us earn money all year long, and we gather paper products and travel-size soaps and shampoos as well. It is an ongoing endeavor.”

The Pittsburgh RMH helps families remain near their sick children in their 59room facility. They offer free or low-cost housing, meals, and facilities that many families could otherwise not afford. Many agencies support the mission of the RMH, and this year's total donation made by several local farm bureaus, including Mercer, Butler, Somerset, Fayette, and Indiana exceeded $2,600.

Hypnotist Jason Christopher to Entertain in Washington Jason Christopher, the eminent hypnotist whose skills have brought him great success as an entertainer, will appear on April 5 at 8 p.m. at American Legion Post #175, 168 Park Ave., Washington. "Already I help people for smoking cessation, weight loss and phobias. Of course, my busy performance schedule limits these appointments but the success rate is amazing."

Jason tells of a case where a smoker had recently had a heart attack and was under doctor's orders to quit. Jason was able to turn a 30-year smoker into a non-smoker in one session. "The value of hypnosis in medical applications is still relatively unexplored," Jason said. "Research will reveal further uses and refine future hypnotic techniques so that they will be as natural and popular as working out or eating right.

On April 5, Jason will be presenting hypnosis strictly for entertainment. He will work with those that have a desire to experience this incredible state of mine. Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates Schedule Four More Schools for Flag Presentation Program The meeting was called to order by Exec Officer Barry Anders, followed by the playing of the Navy Hymn; George Diehl gave the opening prayer; Nancy Horvath led the group with the pledge to the flag. Roll call was taken and all officers were present except CO Bill Hess, Financial Officer Joe Acton and Chaplain V. Rev. Fred Pfeil. The minutes of the February meeting was read by Yeoman James Caldwell and approved. Anders gave the financial report which was approved.

A card was received from the Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, thanking the Flag Presentation Committee for the program that the Shipmates presented to the 5th grade class. Marshall Lignian reported the Flag Presentation Committee has four more schools lined up for this year, plus a few adult groups. Additional help is really needed to supplement the group of Shipmates doing the presentations.

George Essey is to notify local funeral directors to call Anders when a family is requesting the Two-Bell services. Yeoman Caldwell gave a report on the dues paid for this year. Dues can be paid at the next meeting or mailed to Caldwell.

A discussion was held on procuring new supplies of uniform item. Hutchko will chair this committee which includes Lynn Wilson, Horvath, Larry Masci for engraved nameplates, and Pat Maloy for pick up and returns. Anyone who has a white bib is requested to turn them in to the Shipmates. A discussion was also held on the Navy Blue Devils Air Show to be held in Latrobe on June 6 - 7.

Caldwell found a 1943 news circular from Sampson NY boot camp that was in a old wooden box at home and read a couple of sections from it. He will read other sections from it at the next meeting. He also reported anyone who wants a model of their ship can go go to www.motionmodel.com.

Joe Gallo reported the Monessen Vet's council is in the planning stage for the annual Mon Valley Veterans day parade to be held on November 8, 2014 in Monessen.

The dismissal prayer was given by Diehl and the meeting was adjourned until the next meeting on April 1, 2014 at 7 p.m.

Washington County Farm Bureau Announces Safety Contest for Local Youth The Washington County Farm Bureau's Women's Committee recently announced its safety contest theme for 2014. The theme of this year's contest is "Safer, Smarter on the Farm." The contest is open to any youth in the county and is not restricted to family of WCFB members.

Different age groups are eligible to participate in different aspects of the contest. A coloring contest is open to any youth ages 4 - 6, a safety poster drawling contest is available for ages 7 - 12, and a safety essay contest is open to any youth 13 - 18 years of age. There is also a safety webpage contest open to the 13 - 18-year-old age bracket.

All entries must be postmarked by May 5 to be considered for the contest.

County winners for each contest and age group will receive a monetary prize and will have their winning design displayed at Ag Progress Days and the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau annual meeting.

Greater Monessen Historical Society Opens Syrian Exhibit; Prepares for “Images of Modern America” Series A new book featuring color photos of Monessen and Monessen events is to be published as part of the “Images of Modern America” series through Arcadia Publishing. It will cover the time span of 1950 to the present. Matt Shorraw has volunteered to facilitate the project for the Greater Monessen historical Society.

Homeschool Outdoor Classroom: Natural Egg Dye & Decorating The Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering a Homeschool Outdoor Classroom at Mingo Creek County Park on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the park office. Two sessions are available; Session I will begin at 10 a.m. and Session II will begin at 1 p.m.

Learn how to dye your Easter eggs naturally! We will discuss how to create natural egg dye and learn new decorating techniques. Bring along your own hardboiled eggs to make and take home your own colorful creations.

Please note that this program is designed for homeschooled children ages 5 to 11. Legendary DJ Porky Chedwick to be Remembered at Monongahela Dance The Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce will present a Community Oldies Dance on Saturday, April 26 from 7 to11 p.m. at the New Eagle Volunteer Fire Department’s social center.

Legendary disc jockey Porky Chedwick, who passed away recently, will be honored at the event.

“Porky is truly an icon of the music and entertainment businesses in Pittsburgh and beyond,” said Dorothea Pemberton, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce. “We are thrilled to remember him at the dance.” Chedwick's wife, Jeanie, will be in attendance as his life and accomplishments are Porky Chedwick celebrated.

Chedwick’s career in radio, dances and concerts spanned nearly 70 years. His record hops of the 1950s and 1960s were among the largest ever in western Pennsylvania and beyond. He is the only Pittsburgh broadcaster to be honored in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

Longtime disc jockey Bill Lemon of Disc Inferno will provide music from the ‘50s and ‘60s at the April 26 affair.

“We always take requests,” said Lemon, who has been performing at dances, class reunions, wedding receptions and special events for over 35 years in the area and elsewhere around the country.

Pemberton said Lemon is a “perfect fit” for the dance. “Bill has an extensive collection of music from all eras and genres,” she said. “He has experience in this profession that is complemented by his knowledge of the music and an outgoing personality that makes the crowds feel at home.”

"Eastern Woodlands Indians" Presentation Scheduled for the Charleroi Area Historical Society's April Meeting The Charleroi Area Historical Society invites its members, area historical societies, and everyone interested in the story of Native Americans to its April 21 program meeting. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Stephen Glenisky, retired professor of Slippery Rock University, Dr. Glenisky's presentation is called "Portal of the World of the Eastern Woodland Indians (1750-1812)" and highlights the paintings of well-know Western PA artist Robert Griffing. Griffing's paintings and books tell the story of the life, environment and mentality of these Native Americans as they encountered the invading forces from Europe in the 18th century.

Come early (before 7 p.m.) to see a display of Robert Griffing's artwork and a book table on this intriguing topic. A 25-page booklet by Glenisky can be purchased at the modest cost of $1. A time for questions and refreshments follows the presentation. Admission is free. The program begins at 7 p.m. in the SPHS Center in the Charleroi Plaza.

Monessen Veterans Council Plan for November 8th Parade

UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE MONESSEN PUBLIC LIBRARY & CULTURAL CENTER

The Monessen Veterans Council held their February meeting with Chairman Ron Chromulak presiding and 15 veterans in attendance. The annual Veterans Day Parade is scheduled this year in Monessen on November 8th; the Mon Valley Chapter consists of Washington, Monongahela, Charleroi, Donora and Monessen.

Chairperson of the nominating committee, Myron Sepitko, and his committee of Joseph Gallo and Lawrence Masic gave their recommendation for the new Monessen officers for this year's Veterans Day Parade. Nominated were Chromulak for Chairman; James Pallini, First Vice-Chairman; Floyd Kizzie, Second Vice-Chairman; George Essey, Secretary; and Wayne Vlasic, Financial Officer. With no further nominations, Billy ordered the secretary to cast the unanimous ballot for the nominated veterans, which was done.

The commemorative booklet report was given by Robert Gilotty. Gilotty and Billy will co-chair the booklet program. Tag days will be held on June 14 at WalMart and on July 12 at K-Mart, and all funds collected will go toward the parade expenses. Chromulak gave a report on purchasing flag pins. Minimum ordering is 5,000 and after a discussion, Mike Yusko donated money to help to cover the cost, and after more discussion, Essey made a motion to buy the 5,000 pins, selling any leftovers to other organization and was seconded by Billy. Motion carried.

Pallini reported that he will notify12 high schools for their band participation in the parade and recommended to give all bands attending funds to cover some of their expenses to travel to Monessen. After a discussion and comparing previous financial rewards, Sepitko made a motion to award each Band Parents Association these funds. Motion seconded by Gallo and passed.

Under new business, Gilotty reported that a list will be made available for contacts to be made and hopefully, this will prevent from making duplicating visits to prospective donors.

Members were requested to look for caterers and report back to the meeting next month.

Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center will host UFO and Bigfoot researcher and author Stan Gordon on Saturday, April 26 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Gordon has been researching UFO sightings, Bigfoot encounters and other mysterious events in Pennsylvania since 1959. He will present an illustrated lecture titled “Strange Encounters of Pennsylvania” that covers the history of UFOs, Bigfoot and other strange incidents which occurred in Westmoreland County and the surrounding area, as well as state-wide. He will give an update on his current investigations. There will also be a display of UFO and Bigfoot information, as well as a book and DVD signing event following the lecture.

In honor of National Library Week, a book sale will be set up on Saturday, April 12 in the lobby and side areas of the library. The sale will run until May 24 and feature gently used books at reasonable prices. Come early for the best selection.

Clare McMullen will host her monthly “Beginning Genealogy” class on Saturday, April 12 at 11 a.m. in the Pennsylvania Room. Her topic will be “World War I resources and the Family Tree.” With the upcoming centennial of the beginning of the war this summer, she will cover the many changes in European countries and borders that occurred as the Austro-Hungarian, Russian, German and Ottoman Empires crumbled by war’s end and displaced people and records. Light refreshments will be served.

The “Raise Your Voice” Fireside Session offering free musical performances will perform on Saturday, April 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the fireplace area. Please join us.

Jill Godlewski, the Children’s librarian, announces a Toddler Dance Party will be held on four Saturdays, April 19 through May 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. April 19 will feature the Bunny Hop and April 26 will focus on the Hokey Pokey.

The StoryTime theme for April is “Tricksters.” Readings will feature Anansi the Spider, Brer Rabbit and the Hodl. Family StoryTime is held Monday evenings at 6 p.m. in the upstairs Children’s Department.

On Saturday, April 26, 2014, “Last Saturday Super Story Time” will comprise the three stories of the month and three crafts. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Wednesday Crafternoons meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and is adapted for grades 4 and up. Past projects have included sewing skills and clay creations.

The Family Movie schedule for April will be: April 5 – The Essential Bugs Bunny, April 12 – The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking, April 19 –Godspell and April 26 – Animal Crackers. The movies start at noon in the Children’s Room.

Monongahela Area Library April Programs Include Storytime, Spaghetti Dinner The Monongahela Area Library holds Storytime for preschoolers age 30 months through 5 years Wednesdays at 11 a.m. and Baby Lapsit for those too young for Storytime at 1 p.m. There is no meeting of either group on April 16. MARC Pooch Parade to Take Place in Chess Park The Monongahela Area Revitalization Corporation Pooch Parade will take place on Saturday, May 17. Assembly and registration is at 10 a.m. at Chess Park. The parade will be at 11 a.m. from Second Street to Chess Park on Main Street. Prizes will be awarded in many categories. There is a $5 entry fee. Judging at the end of the parade will be held in Chess Park, where festivities will begin immediately following presentations.

Charleroi Rotary Club Honors Students of the Month; Plans Fundraiser at Ripepi Winery The Charleroi Rotary Club continued hosting Students of the Month during December, January, and February.

December’s honoree was Christopher Schaum. In January, members honored Zachary Nabozny, and the student honored in February was December Student of the month Christopher Schaum Joseph Papadakos. All three (pictured second from right) receives award from members students are seniors at of the Charleroi Rotary Club.

Charleroi High School and have been involved in both school and community service organizations. Each of the students has made plans to pursue education following their graduation from Charleroi High School.

3rd Annual Yough River Trail 5K/10K Run and 2-Mile Fun Walk Scheduled for May 10th The Westmoreland Yough Trail Chapter of the Regional Trail Corporation will hold its 3rd Annual 5k/10k Run and 2-Mile Fun Walk on Saturday May 10, 2014.

The event will start at the Arthur H. King Access Area of the Youghiogheny River Trail in West Newton. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used by trail volunteers to maintain, preserve and enhance the Youghiogheny River Trail section of the Great Allegheny Passage.

The 5K/10K Run will begin at the King Trail Access parking lot and proceed south on the Yough River Trail out and back. The 10K run will begin promptly at 9 a.m. and the 5K run at 9:05 a.m. The 2-Mile Fun Walk will begin at the King Trail Access parking lot at 9 a.m. and proceed north on the Yough River Trail one mile out and back.

Medals will be awarded to overall male and female runners in the 5K and 10K runs and to the top three male and female age group participants of those events. Medals will also be given to all run and walk participants age 10 and under. Medals will be awarded to the oldest and youngest participants of the 2-Mile Fun Walk.

Registration is through Active.com.

The event entry forms may also be picked up at the Regional Trail Corporation office in West Newton (located in West Newton Station), from the bulletin boards along the trail, from the many supporting businesses in the region, and on the WYTC website www.bikewytc.org. Prices are as follows: 5K or 10K Run - $20; 2-Mile Fun Walk - $15. Children age 10 and under -$10. On race day add $5.

Many people are unaware that the trail is not maintained by county or state workers, but by volunteer efforts.

This event is a major fundraiser for the volunteer maintenance of the 10.5 miles of trail that runs through Westmoreland County. People come from all around the southwest Pennsylvania region to enjoy the scenery, smell the early morning air along the river, enjoy the camaraderie of the event and have a chance to win a medal.

Every participant who preregisters will receive a short-sleeved t-shirt. The event is held rain or shine, no refunds.

May 10th Craft Show To Benefit Union Twp.’s Austin Manz Austin Manz is a 15-year-old boy from Union Township. Austin was born with a mitochondrial disease, which limits energy production and leaves him with little to no muscle tone. He is incapable of supporting himself without assistance.

Such common actions such as clearing the throat and breathing often require mechanical assistance via a tracheostomy tube. Austin requires 24-hour care.

While he receives home nursing on scheduled shifts, most care is done by family members. He also relies on several medical machines daily, such as a ventilator, suction machine, cough assist, feeding pump, and a few others to meet his needs.

The family needs to have an emergency generator installed in their home in the event of a power loss to keep his medical machines in operation. Austin requires a lot of medications and other medical supplies not covered by insurance. In addition, a Hoyer track system was generously donated to the family to assist in moving Austin. However, professional installation of this device is needed.

St. Francis of Assisi High School Youth Ministry will be sponsoring a vendor craft show to benefit Austin on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Finley Hall on the church’s property. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Vendors and crafters from our surrounding area will have their items for sale.

Food and refreshments will be for sale as well as baked goods provided by St. Francis Parish Ladies Organizations. There will be a 50/50 raffle and a Chinese Auction. Hanging baskets will be sold by our Youth Group and all profits from the entire event will go directly to Austin. Monongahela Area Library Creates “Biggest Loser” Fundraiser to Fund Children’s Program The Monongahela Area Library’s Friends of the Library have issued a unique challenge to the library’s patrons and community members to help fund the children’s programs during the summer.

Called “The Biggest Loser,” the Friends issued a plea for donations of loose change. Each donation of coins between March 15 and April 30 will be Friends members Linda Hall, Sharon Andrews and weighed, charted and recorded.

The donor who gives the most coins by weight will win a gift certificate to Duke’s Café.

For donors under 18, the donor with the largest donation by weight will receive a $15 gift card from Barnes & Noble which may be used at a store or online.

“One of our good friends and patrons, Christine Somales, came up with the idea knowing that our candy sales were down this year,” noted library director Elina Filander.

For the previous five years, the library participated in a candy sale program to supplement the library budget for children’s programs. “That worked well,” said Friends treasurer Sharon Andrews. “Every spring we added up what we sold and then we knew what we could afford.”

When a candy manufacturer raised the price of the fundraising bar to double, library sales slipped.

As each donation of coins is brought in, the weight will be recorded by the library staff and charted weekly in a bar graph. Repeat donations may be made by individuals in order to boost their tally and be “The Biggest Loser.”

“With all the loose change, it maybe should be ‘the Biggest Looser’ but it will help the children’s program be the biggest winner,” said Filander.

On Wednesday, April 30 at the conclusion of the 11 a.m. Storytime, the final totals will be announced and the winners in adult and junior divisions announced.

Men’s Breakfast Club Schedules ‘Umbrella Man’ for April, Tunch Ilkin for May as Guest Speakers The Sinner’s Only Breakfast Club, a non-denominational group of Christian men, will hold their final breakfast for this season on Saturday, April 26 at 9 a.m. in the fellowship hall of Pricedale Union Church at 203 Johnson Ave. in Belle Vernon.

This month’s speaker, John Pallini, comes from the ranks of our own congregation. John will review the very interesting and colorful life and times of his paternal grandfather, Angelo Pallini, better known by many in the Mon Valley as “The Umbrella Man.” Mr. Pallini, a native of Italy, traveled thousands of miles throughout Western Pennsylvania carrying a heavy supply kit on his meager frame. He used the contents of this box to repair, for the smallest charge, a multitude of household items which, of course, included umbrellas.

The Umbrella Man was and remains one of the many European immigrants to grace this Valley with a true servant’s heart. Angelo used his God-given gifts and talents in the service of his fellowman and in doing so, gained the love and respect of many. In addition to his ability to repair just about anything, he also wrote poetry in his native tongue.

To learn more about this fascinating man, plan on attending our breakfast meeting. The men’s group will conclude this season’s meetings with a non-breakfast service on Wednesday evening, May 21 at 7 p.m. with former Steelers offensive lineman and current broadcaster, Tunch Ilkin. Tunch will address a combined audience of men and women but his message of “Who’s In Your Huddle?” will be primarily directed toward Christian men. Come early for this one!

Junior Achievement Bowl-A-Thon to Benefit Washington and Greene County Programs Junior Achievement of Western Pennsylvania’s Washington and Greene County Chapter will host its annual Bowl-A-Thon on Tuesday, April 29 at The Meadows Lanes at The Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Washington, PA. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and bowling starts at 6 p.m.

Proceeds from the Washington and Greene County event will support JA’s financial literacy courses and the new “Careers in Energy” program at the Burgettstown, Canon-McMillan, Central Greene, Charleroi, Chartiers-Houston, Jefferson Morgan, McGuffey, Peters Township, Ringgold, Trinity and Washington school districts. Last year’s event raised over $10,000 for educational programs in Washington and Greene Counties.

Charthene Club Names Breann DeMoss March Girl of the Month; Plans to Choose Scholarship Winner The Charthene Club met at Cotromano's Restaurant (Paolo's) on March 6. The regular meeting opened up with Kathleen Umbel introducing Diane Nonack, program chairperson, who presented a program on "Fun and Interesting Facts about Pittsburgh." The entertaining program brought back many memories and some new information to members.

Nonack reported that Debbie from Shepherd's Voice would be the entertainment for the Reciprocity Tea. Umbel reported the Reciprocity will take place on April 3. It will be held in the Alumni Rom at Charleroi Area School District and the program begins at 7 p.m.

Breann DeMoss Barbara Pepper reported that scholarship applications were picked up from the school. The committee will be meeting to choose the scholarship winner. It was also stated that Breann DeMoss, daughter of Roberta Griffith was named the March Girl of the Month.

Breann is a senior honor student at Charleroi Area High School. She serves as National Honor Society Secretary, and Student Council Historian. She is as cheerleader, as well as a member of Student Forum, FCCLA, Tutoring Club, Executive Committee and Art Club. Breann participates in Relay for Life, Charleroi Clean-Up Days, and Tree Planting at Lynch Field. She also volunteers at blood drives. She was awarded the Rotary Youth Leadership Award. Her future plans are to attend college and major in psychology.

Ruth Karlowsky reported a fundraiser by 2 Fine Caterers in Speers will be held.

Alan Walker to be Featured at MVRCC April Luncheon An event hosted by the Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Mon Yough Area Chamber of Commerce, Mon Valley Progress Council, and Greater Rostraver Chamber will feature the Secretary of the PA Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), C. Alan Walker on April 8 at the Willow Room in Rostraver Township. Registration and networking begins at 11:30 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon.

Secretary Walker will discuss Governor Tom Corbett’s JOBS1st PA Initiative and efforts to build a stronger Pennsylvania. In 2012, Gov. Corbett launched JOBS 1st PA as a comprehensive roadmap to C. Alan Walker economic recovery that harnessed the state’s resources and talents to prioritize private-sector job creation and retention. Secretary Walker will discuss efforts to continue building on the successes of JOBS 1st PA through focusing in two core areas; Make It in PA and Talented Workers. The DCED Secretary will also highlight the department’s Fiscal Year 2014-15 budget proposal.

Before being confirmed to his position in 2011, Walker came from Bigler, PA, where he was president and CEO of Bradford Energy Company Inc. He has also served as a member and chairman of several boards, including the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, Team Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Coal Association, and Pennsylvanians for Effective Government. He is also past president of the Pennsylvania Society.

Wondering where we got our unique name? Well, here is their story...

Wayne Ray has always had a passion for photography. When digital cameras first came out, Wayne rekindled his love for photography and began taking photographs again. His first subject was scenery. Wayne was awarded many first place awards in local photography competitions with these photos.

However, Wayne has another passion - firefighting. He has been a member of the Fallowfield Township Fire Dept. for over 38 years. In 2003 a fellow firefighter asked him to bring his camera to fire calls. One day he did and he hasn't stopped since. Because of this, the members of the FTVFC gave him the nickname 'Snapshot." Seeing how the FTVFC Washington County Number is 47, it was only natural to name the business Snapshot 47.

Jennifer is Wayne and Joyce's daughter. She now operates the full-service photography studio in North Belle Vernon. She has learned her photography trade from her father. Jenn and Wayne now photograph sporting events, weddings, proms and much more!

SPORTS Pro Wrestling Event at Cal U Offers ‘Salute to the Troops’ as Scholarship Fundraiser

Union Finley Midget Football Association 2014 Registration

Service members and military veterans will be admitted free to the first professional wrestling event held in the Cal U Convocation Center arena.

Renegade Wrestling Alliance, in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and the Cal U Office of Veterans Affairs, will present “Salute to the Troops” at 7 p.m. on April 19 at California University of Pennsylvania. Doors to the Convocation Center will open at 5:45 p.m.

Tickets will be available at the Convocation Center Box Office from 2 - 4 p.m.

Monday-Friday, beginning March 3. The box office opens at 10 a.m. on the day of the event, and tickets will be sold at the door.

Ticket price is $15 for assigned floor seating, $12 for general admission, and $6 for children (ages 12 and younger) or students with proper ID. Veterans and service members who show military identification will be admitted free.

A portion of the net proceeds from the event will support the Post-9/11 Scholarship Fund at the Foundation for California University. Members of the U.S. armed services will be recognized between matches.

Renegade Wrestling Alliance plans to present six professional wrestling matches. Featured wrestlers include “Steel City Prodigy” Ryan Mitchell, a U.S. Navy veteran, along with RWA heavyweight champion Lodi and many others. Based in West Newton, the RWA is an independent, regional professional wrestling company that has been operating in southwestern Pennsylvania for more than five years.

Union Finley has been successfully competing in the Mon Valley Midget Football League for 39 years.This program has been and continues to be a successful feeder program for the surrounding school districts from which the players from Union Finley represent. Many graduates of this program have gone on to be members of WPIAL and state championship teams for their school districts.

Church Requests Donations to Stock New Give-and-Take Store The Belle Vernon Church of the Nazarene is putting together a new store that hopes to be open to the public starting Saturday, May 17 and is looking for donated items to stock as merchandise. However, shoppers will not be asked to pay for anything when they go to check out.

The Give-and-Take Store at BVNaz” is going to operate under two specific principles: (1) if you want it or need it, then take it; and (2) if you have it and you don't want it or need it and

someone else might, then give it.

When the Give-and-Take Store opens its doors, it hopes to have available a variety of different items. Its main merchandising goals are for clothing and toys; but, the store will also seek to offer small working electronics, small furniture, housewares, books, and home décor.

Currently, in addition to the donation of merchandise, the Give-andTake Store is also accepting donations of clothing racks and shelving units in order to display the merchandise.

Once the store opens, the public will be able to “shop” at the store, taking whatever they truly need or want and will not be charged anything for the merchandise. However, cash donations and donations of items that are in good, useable, and intact condition will always be accepted.

There are no eligibility requirements for shopping at the Give-and-Take Store.

When the Store is open, shoppers will be able to inquire about other ministries of the Belle Vernon Church of the Nazarene or be able to ask for someone to pray with them. A prayer lounge and a playroom for children will also be available for shoppers' use.

9th Egg Eggstravaganza to be Held at St. John the Baptist Byzantine Church The 9th Egg Eggstravaganza will be held at the St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church Social Hall, 201 E. Main St., Uniontown, on Sunday, April 6 from noon – 5 p.m.

This year, the Eggstravaganza is being sponsored by GCU Lodge #81, local egg artists, and the St. John’s Ethnic Craft Club.

Twenty-five or more egg artists will be demonstrating, displaying, and selling their particular art which will include Eastern European pysanky, Polish dropand-pull wax relief eggs, Hungarianstyle eggs, onion-skin-dyed etched or scratch type goose eggs, vinegar-etched emu eggs, tie dyed eggs, wood burned eggs, and other collectable Tiffany-style eggs.

In addition to the egg artists, there will be an Egg Bazaar featuring egg dyes, beeswax, tools, books, videos, and pysanky kits for sale. Traditional items used in ethnic Easter baskets will also be available, such as embroidered covers, candles, lamb butter molds, egg wraps, parish cookbooks, and much more. There will also be Easter crafts for sale made by the St. John’s Ethnic Craft Club. Traditional Easter basket covers will also be on display. There will also be a cooking demonstration of Easter foods such as hrutka/sirets (Easter Cheese), horseradish/beets, braided long rolls, and Paska Bread design making.

A parish bake sale will include long rolls (nut, apricot, poppyseed, cottage cheese), paska bread, decorated medovniki, small nut rolls, cookies, homemade candy, and many more delicious goodies.

Visitors can try a hands-on workshop to learn how to decorate eggs. There will be a Children’s Corner featuring egg-related crafts, storytelling, cookie decorating, and a jigsaw puzzle area. A Raffle and Basket Raffle will also take place.

A Lenten luncheon menu, including St. John’s “famous” pirohi, halushki, pagach, pirohi pizza, and soups and more will be available for purchase.

School News...School News RHS Students Band Together on Rare Disease Day

Ringgold Middle School Participates in MATHCOUNTS On February 15, 2014, the Ringgold Middle School participated in the MATHCOUNTS competition at Washington & Jefferson College. Ten Ringgold middle schoolers competed as individuals, with four of them representing Ringgold in the team competition. Sarah Ott received a $50 cash prize for being the top- scoring female mathlete and Trent Gerard earned the right to compete at the state level, coming in 6th in the countdown round.

These students from Ringgold High School banded together in support of Zack and Matt Baynham’s nephew, Ethan, on Rare Disease Day 2014. The main objective of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives.

Last year Zack put together a poster board explaining Glutaric Acidemia Type 1 (the genetic disorder Ethan was born with) and handmade blue jean ribbons for the students and teachers to wear. Everyone that made a donation received a ribbon. This year the outcome was nearly doubled, raising $500 that is being donated to the Clinic For Special Children, the non-profit organization where Ethan receives his care.

PAIN MANAGEMENT Q: What is sciatica?

A: Sciatica is actually a misnomer. The correct term is radiculopathy or raducilits. In this condition a disc in the cervical (neck) or lumbar (back) spine is bulged or herniated and irritates a spinal nerve. This will lead to symptoms such pain, numbness and/or weakness. The symptoms are will generally be in the neck, back, arm or leg.

Q: What causes a disc to bulge or herniate?

A: There are many causes from a motor vehicle accident to lifting too Justin Petrolla MD heavy of an object but generally there is not a specific cause. A simple activity such as getting up out of chair or lifting a pencil could be the event prior to a disc herniating. The saying, “the straw that broke the camels back” fits pretty well here.

Q: How is a disc bulge or herniation diagnosed?

A: An appropriate physical exam by your physician can generally identify if there you are suffering for a radiculopathy. Many other conditions can mimic a radiculopathy for a shoulder injury to carpal tunnel syndrome so imaging is sometimes necessary. To accurately identify the discs a MRI is imaging of choice.

Q: How is a radiculopathy treated?

A: The mainstay of treatment is physical therapy. Core (abdominal) and lumbar strengthening are emphasized. Medications used include medrol dose back (stersoid), muscle relaxants and pain medications. An epidural steroid preformed with x-ray guidance can also be used if necessary. If conservative treatment fails then a surgical consultation can be ordered. Total treatment is available in the Mon Valley. Just ask your physician for a referral to the orthopedic group (TOG).

West Newton Senior Center One-Day Bus Trip is to Geneva, Ohio The West Newton Senior Center has announced their May one-day bus trip will be on Saturday, May 31, 2014 (changed from May 24) to Geneva, Ohio. Cost is $99. We depart at 6 a.m. from behind Giant Eagle in West Newton.
