Mon Valley Hospital Helps to Keep Troops Happy

W

hen Paul Cervone, M.D., an obstetrician/gynecologist with Valley Women’s Health and a colonel in the PA Army National Guard, was deployed to Afghanistan earlier this year, the Mon Valley Hospital employees who work with him in the Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (AML ECC) missed passing him in the lobby. When they learned that he and his fellow soldiers were craving some of their favorite snacks from home, MVH’s Community Relations Dept. quickly mobilized and organized a care package drive among some of his hospital coworkers.

When the box arrived, Dr. Cervone wrote to express his thanks.

Dr. Cervone is expected back in the next two months and will resume seeing patients in his offices on the campus of Mon Valley Hospital and in the HealthPLEX in Belle Vernon this spring.

Monessen Music Festival Scheduled for April The 2nd Annual Raise Your Voice Festival will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Monessen City Park from 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. The festival will be a fundraiser held by Monessen Communities That Care (CTC), an 11-year non-profit that is aimed at providing positive goals and activities for our area's youth.

Numerous local bands will perform at the event, showcasing their talents. We are currently looking for sponsors, vendors, and artists who would be interested in having a booth or advertising. Interested parties should contact Matt Shorraw at SHO5348@calu.edu.

Monessen Public Library Plans Pi Day Celebration, Other March Events Monessen Public Library is located at 326 Donner Ave. in Monessen and can be reached at 724-684-4750.

Check out the ongoing book sale in the 1st floor annex. Hardbacks are only 50¢ and paperbacks are 25¢. Watch for the large book sale coming in April during National Library Week.

Each month, beautiful raffle baskets containing unique items are on display in the lobby. Chances may be purchased for $1. Sarris candy bars are always for sale at the main desk for $1.

New in the lobby area is the Monessen Library Wish Tree. It is decorated with ornaments that show

items that the Library would like to have. Some are inexpensive, and others are a larger purchase.

Patrons are invited to select ornaments and purchase the needed items as gifts of appreciation for their library.

UPCOMING EVENTS FOR MARCH INCLUDE: StoryTime: Monday at 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.; Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. and the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month at 11 a.m.

Monessen Hosts Emergency Preparedness Seminar

“How many of you know what to do in case of an emergency?” asked Volunteer Specialist Becky Parker, who began the meeting at Valley Manor in Monessen on Feb. 22 on emergencies in the home.

Ms. Parker welcomed many residents and visitors from other buildings. She introduced speakers, including: Susan Linders, service coordinator; Lynn Wackenhutch, hope & life manager for the Housing Authority; Amy Hulula, Westmoreland County Community College and Coordinator Monessen Police Chief Gibson and William Hess, of RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer EMS for Monessen, spoke on various ways to prepare for an emergency.

Program); Pete Dyziayk, maintenance supervisor;Monessen Police Chief Gibson and William Hess, EMS for Monessen.

They distributed emergency information sheets to be filled out with medications being currently taken by those filling them out. The sheet should go on the side of the refrigerator.

Parker continued, “Does everyone have an emergency kit ready to go? What about cash and coins? You can’t go to the ATM if there is a hurricane.”

Attendees were given a guide on what to put in the kit and were told to keep the emergency kit in the closet, never in the basement. The kit should also have food—non-perishable goods.

Next to speak was Chief of Police Gibson. The Chief stated, “If you need to talk to a police officer, please call. We’re all in this together, and we want to make it as enjoyable as possible.” He said, “I advise you not to go out and confront any type of disturbance.”

Last to speak was William Hess, EMS for Monessen. He has encountered a number of disasters and has a lot of experience with emergencies. He cited medications as a big problem, especially running out of them during a disaster.

He also said, “The biggest thing I could tell you is to listen to what I say. If I tell you to leave your apartment there’s a reason for it…You’ve got to be really careful what you’re doing.”

The Housing Authority was fortunate to have Police Chief Gibson and William Hess give of their time at this presentation. Safety is everyone’s responsibility, and everyone should make an effort to learn more about it.

Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates Hold First Meeting of 2013 A very special thank you is extended to all the Shipmates that braved the weather and attended the February meeting. The meeting was opened by CO Bill Hess.

A moment of silence was held for our departed shipmates, Kenneth Schmalbach and Stanley "The Man" Musial. Roll call was taken, and the minutes of the December 2012 meeting was read by Yeoman Jim Caldwell and approved.

The son of deceased Master Chief Thomas Kavanaugh was introduced and on behalf of the Kavanaugh family; he presented to the Shipmates a framed photo of the USS Monongahela, in appreciation for the twobell ceremony that was performed for the family at the funeral home.

Joe Gallo reported that the expenses for the 2013 picnic will be greater this year as the supplier of the meat products has closed up operation as of today.

The flag etiquette committee report was given by Marshall. The program has been presented to 2424 students, 226 adults at 25 schools and 2 adult organizations. Five more schools are on the agenda for this school year.

Noel Sawyers has rejoined the committee and additional help is needed, as 3 members are tentatively sidelined as caretakers at their respective homes. A thank you letter was received and read from the Jefferson Central Elem. School for the committee's presentation of the flag program.

Jim Caldwell tended his resignation as chairperson of the phone committee due to work obligations, and Noel Sawyer volunteered to take over the duties of same.

George Essey reported that the idea of offering honorary membership is a no-go as too many obstacles are to be met.

The dismissal prayer was given by XO Anders and the meeting was adjourned until the next regular meeting on March 5, 2013.

Award-winning documentary producer Rick Sebak will be a special guest at the All Oldies, Only Oldies dance Saturday, April 6 at the Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department’s social center and banquet hall. “We are very pleased that Rick will be with us,” said Al Marcy, assistant fire chief and entertainment chairman of the Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department. “It’s fitting that he will be the special guest because his documentaries on WQED in Pittsburgh and nationally on PBS focus on various aspects of American life and often reflect on our past. The dances at Stockdale do the same thing – Rick Sebak that is, they remind us of special times in our lives.”

Sebak will make a presentation at the April 6 dance and then be available for autographs and photos.

Ralph Trilli, longtime area disc jockey and co-host with Bill Chappo of the Crusin’ Sunday show on WJPA (95.3 FM, 1450 AM, noon to 6 p.m.), will spin the Oldies. Ron Paglia, disc jockey at the original Stockdale record hops from December 21, 1957 through August 1964, will be the guest host.

The April 6 event will run from 8 p.m. to midnight and is open to the public.

The dance will carry a BYOE (bring your own everything) format. Patrons are invited to bring their own food and liquid refreshments. The fire department will provide refreshments (not pop). MMVTA Provides Mon Valley Residents Bus Service to/from West Brownsville Walmart The Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority (MMVTA) Valley 2 Route will add a West Brownsville Walmart stop on its route starting Monday, March 4, 2013. The updated route will service the following: West Brownsville Walmart; Belle Vernon/Rostraver Shopping Plazas; Charleroi; Dunlevy; Allenport; Stockdale; Roscoe; Elco; Coal Center; California and Cal U. The route will also include special morning and evening trips to/from Donora, Black Diamond, Monongahela, Fisher Heights and North Charleroi for the added convenience of early and late university classes.

Costanzo Announces Candidacy for Judge Magisterial District Judge Valarie Costanzo has announced her candidacy for a seat on the Court of Common Pleas of Washington County. Judge Costanzo has adjudicated more than 50,000 cases during her courtroom career. She presides over criminal, civil, landlord/tenant, traffic, and summary cases and is responsible for issuing arrest warrants and search warrants.

"With a prolonged vacancy on the court and a backlog of cases, it's imperative that the county elects a qualified and experienced judge who doesn't need on-the-job training," Costanzo explained.

Valarie Costanzo "For the past 14 years, I've been in the courtroom on a daily basis, demonstrating my ability to closely listen to all parties, apply the law in an even-handed way, and render prompt decisions."

In 1998, Costanzo was appointed district judge by former Governor Tom Ridge.

She was elected to a full term in 1999, and twice won re-election in 2005 and 2011.

Costanzo is a former Washington County Assistant District Attorney who prosecuted over 1,500 criminal cases. She was instrumental in the development and implementation the county's "Fast Track Program," which saves taxpayer dollars by expediting a criminal case from the preliminary hearing stage to a final plea before the Court of Common Pleas. Costanzo has been an attorney in private practice for the past 18 years, handling a variety of civil matters.

Costanzo was born and raised in Washington County and is a graduate of Canon-McMillan High School. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh in 1991. Costanzo went on to obtain her law degree from the University Of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1994 and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

Costanzo is a member of the Washington County Bar Association and Special Court Judges Association of Pennsylvania. In addition, she is Vice President of the Washington County Special Court Judges Association and serves as chairwoman of its Rules Committee.

Costanzo makes her home in Cecil Township with her two sons, Ryan and Justin. They attend St. Patrick Catholic Church in Canonsburg.

Washington County Farm Bureau Announces 2013 Spring Food Drive The Washington County Farm Bureau (WCFB) is conducting its 10th annual food drive to benefit the local food pantries of the Greater Washington County Food Bank. The food bank currently serves 38 pantries and 4,500 homes.

Over the past several years, the 4-H clubs in Washington County have gotten directly involved in the Farm Bureau Food Drive. Pam Palletta from the Washington County Cooperative Extension office has helped to coordinate the clubs. “As an incentive last year, WCFB, The Marcellus Shale Coalition and Mark West each contributed $200 to an award fund for the top clubs that were involved,” Carter continued. “If any company or individual is interested in contributing to this year’s fund, please contact me as soon as possible.”

In addition to the 4-H members, the local FFA chapters are also getting involved. Don Carter added, “We would like to surpass last year’s total of over 10,000 pounds of food gathered, and that takes a county-wide effort. Any religious or civic organizations that wish to become involved can also call me, and this food drive ties in well to many types of community service and senior projects.”

Blane Black Announces Candidacy for Court of Common Pleas of Washington County Monongahela Attorney Blane A. Black has announced his candidacy for one of two vacancies on the Court of Common Pleas of Washington County. Mr. Black is a Charleroi native and maintains his law office in Monongahela. He resides in South Strabane Twp. where he and his wife have raised their four children who all attended and graduated from Trinity Area schools., Mr. Black has been a practicing attorney for all of his professional life in the Mon Valley for over 31 years and maintains a general law practice handling Blane Black civil, criminal, divorce, support, bankruptcy, workers compensation, estates and most other legal matters. It is that well-rounded experience that he believes is his most qualifying attribute.

“I am very much concerned about the fact that our Court is now operating with only 4 judges instead of our allotted 6. With my many years of experience, I believe that I can help fill the void,” noted Black. “Most likely, the new judges will have to assume duties dealing with family-related and criminal matters. Having raised four children of my own and with my general practice background, I will not need any on-the-job training.”

Mr. Black received his undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Pittsburgh, in 1978, and then received his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1981. He has been in private practice since, and previously served as a Support Hearing Officer for Washington County where he heard and adjudicated thousands of child and spousal support cases. He serves on the County Board of Viewers and has participated in the Court’s Civil Mediation Program and has been appointed by the Court to preside over civil mini-trials.

He currently serves as Solicitor for the Washington County Department of Tax Revenue and handles all tax assessment and tax claim litigation matters for the County. He also serves as General Counsel for the Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority, Solicitor for Dunlevy, Roscoe, and Smithton Boroughs, Solicitor for RESA Regional Police and is also the current Solicitor for the Recorder of Deeds and former Solicitor for the county Prothonotary. He is also the 2013 president of the Washington County Bar Association, treasurer of the Washington County Bar Foundation, and is an active member of the Monongahela Rotary Club.

West Newton Public Library Grand Opening a Smashing Success The February grand opening of the West Newton Public Library was a huge success with numerous patrons in attendance. We would like to thank the public for standing by us over the past 9 months while we worked very hard to get the doors back open. We have revamped the public spaces to make them more inviting and we encourage all to stop by and see what we offer.

The theme for our March Children's Story and Craft Hour will be Dr. Seuss. The event will take place on March 16 at 10 a.m. This event will feature numerous volunteers stationed throughout the library reading some of Dr. Seuss's classic stories.

In addition to the stories, the children are invited to create a Dr. Seuss themed craft / snack. The event is opened to children of all ages.

The West Newton Library is offering a ‘Learn the Basics of Knitting’ class which will start on Wednesday April 10 from 6-7 p.m. The class will meet for 4 weeks and during that time you will learn how to cast on, knit, pearl and cast off. By the end of the 4 week course you will be able to create a wash cloth. The cost is $20 for the program, which includes materials. Space is limited, so reservations are required.

The West Newton Library is currently collecting old costume jewelry, jewelry boxes, and watches for an upcoming fundraiser. We request that your donations are in nice reusable condition. Monthly Meetings of the Rostraver Twp. Historical Society Resume The Rostraver Twp. Historical Society will be starting their monthly meetings on Thursday, March 14 at the old Fells Methodist Church located at 800 Fellsburg Road. F.O.E. 1809 Bentleyville Eagles Sponsor 'Locks of Love' Donation Event

The F.O.E. 1809 Bentleyville Eagles gathered to sponsor a 'Locks of Love' hair donation event on the evening of January 26 at 7 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge in Bentleyville, PA. The F.O.E. 1809 Bentleyville Eagles motto is 'People Helping People.' In the outpouring of caring and donations at this event, that mission was easily seen.

Fourteen donations of hair and monetary donations were submitted to the Locks of Love organization (locksoflove.org) in West Palm Beach, FL. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under the age 21 who suffer long-term medical hair loss in the United States and Canada. Requirements are that hair has a minimum length of 10" which is banded into a ponytail for donation. The F.O.E. 1809 Bentleyville Eagles plan to sponsor a second Locks of Love donation in spring.

Fox’s Pizza Den and Westmoreland Yough Trail Schedule 2nd Annual Races for May The Westmoreland Yough Trail Chapter of the Regional Trail Corporation will hold its 2nd Annual 5K/10K Run, 5K Race Walk and 2 Mile Fun Walk on Saturday, May 18th. The event will start at the Arthur H. King Access Area of the Youghiogheny River Trail in West Newton. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used by trail volunteers to maintain, preserve and enhance the Youghiogheny River Trail section of the Great Allegheny Passage.

The 5K/10K Run and 5K Race Walk will begin at the King Trail Access Parking Lot and proceed south on the Yough River Trail out and back. The 2 Mile Fun Walk will begin at the King Trail Access Parking Lot and proceed north on the Yough River Trail 1 Mile out and back.

Medals will be awarded to overall male and female runners in the 5K and 10K Run and the 5K Race Walk and to the top three male and female age group participants of those events. Medals will also be given to all participants age 10 and under. Medals will be awarded to the oldest and youngest participants of the 2 Mile Fun Walk.

Event entry forms may be picked up at the Regional Trail Corporation office in West Newton (located in West Newton Station), from the bulletin boards along the trail, from the many supporting businesses in the region, and on the WYTC website www.bikewytc.org.

Washington Rotary Hosts 11th Annual Charity Trivia Contest

Downtown West Newton Inc. Kicks Off Annual Pledge Drive

Put on your thinking cap! It is time for the Washington Rotary Club's 10th Annual Rotary Charity Trivia Contest to be held on Friday, March 8 at 7 p.m. at the Three Rivers Auction House, Washington. Rotary will donate $1,000 to the charity of the winning team's choice, $500 to the second place team's charity, and $250 to the third place team's charity.

The event consists of 50 questions segmented into 10 categories of five questions each. All teams play simultaneously, with answers written on a notecard and scores tabulated by the quizmasters and scorekeepers. In between rounds, activities include door prize drawings and a raffle auction. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Last year, a total of 200 people and 33 teams participated. Net proceeds donated to the Rotary Foundation, which funds international projects that provide health care, clean water, food, education, and other essential needs in the developing world.

Teams must consist of a minimum of four people and a maximum of eight; team size is strictly enforced. The entry fee is $30 per team member and includes pizza, snacks, and beverages. The fee for all spectators is also $30 per person, and spectators and cheerleaders are not permitted to sit with teams during game play.

To enter a team in the Charity Trivia Contest, send one check per team (with the team name noted in the memo) made payable to "Washington Rotary Club" in the amount of $30 per player and/or spectator to the Washington Rotary Club, c/o Kathy Sabol, 119 S. This event helps DWNI continue its efforts in helping revitalize the downtown. 2012 was a big year for the organization with its ground breaking of Simeral Square, the rehab of some key properties in the downtown area, and the reopening of the West Newton Public Library. The organization also helped in the Great PA Cleanup, numerous fundraising dinners and Miracle on Main Street. We are hoping with your help we will be able to continue helping improve the downtown area.

New Eagle VFD 8th Annual Dinner Dance a Success The New Eagle Volunteer Fire Dept. hosted their 8th Annual Dinner Dance on Saturday, February 16th. Oldies group Pure Gold entertained the sold-out crowd. Food was provided by Myers Catering of Fairchance, PA. The New Eagle Ladies Auxiliary president, Dorothea Pemberton, presented the fire department with a check in the amount of $33,000 raised by members of the auxiliary in the 2012 year.

February Meeting of the Monongahela Rotary Steve Russell, Mon Valley educator and archivist, spoke on the abdication of Pope Benedict XVI with the aid of his papal collection which included badges, post cards and a large oval pin of the previous Pope Benedict, who served during the WWI - Pope Benedict XV. Both Benedicts will have served 8 years in the papal position with the recent resignation of Benedict XVI.

Donora Historical Society Designs Stan Musial Throwback Jersey After a brief Christmas break, we got right back into the swing of things with our February presentation, which featured Uniontown native Joshua Scully, who presented the story of the D.L. Clark Candy Co. and their influence on the Pittsburgh region. Joshua searched us out to do this presentation and we were most grateful for his time and effort.

For the past eight months, we have been working with Ebbets Field Flannels on a prototype of a 1938 Donora High School baseball jersey designed from vintage pictures in our archives. This is a replica of the jersey that Stan Musial wore during his playing days with the Dragons, featuring his number 16 on the back with DONORA on the front made of black and orange felt numbers and letters. Each authentic throwback jersey is handcrafted especially for you with 100% wool flannel. We do not stock these jerseys at the museum and each is made to order in your desired size from S to 4XL. You can choose from travel gray or home white.

Feel free to browse our website and click on our “Merchandise” tab to see pictures of the jersey or stop by the museum to see and feel the original prototype.

For railroad enthusiasts, stop by the museum to see our revolving display on the Donora Southern Railroad. Aside from pictures and other artifacts, the two featured pieces are an original locomotive steam whistle that was donated to the museum early last year, and a newly acquired Donora Southern Railroad sponsored baseball jersey.

In January, we hosted St. Francis University from Loretto, PA, who brought 17 environmental engineering and chemistry students and their instructor to tour the museum and discuss the 1948 Smog event.

Our next presentation will be on Monday, March 4th at 7 p.m. and will feature women of Donora to honor Women’s History Month. An array of different female personalities will be discussed and their impact on the shaping of the town of Donora.

Hop Over to Bunny Trolley at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum Join us as the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum opens for its 50th season with one of our favorite events, “Bunny Trolley.” Ride a beautifully restored antique trolley to see the Easter Bunny on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, March 22-24, and Friday and Saturday, March 29 and 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ongoing activities include an Easter Egg Hunt, games for the family, a springtime craft activity, and photos with the Easter Bunny. Trolley rides leave every 20 minutes with the last ride leaving the platform at 4 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors (62+), $7 for children (ages 1-15), and free for those under age 1. Family rate is $40 for up to 2 adults and 4 children. Admission also includes an introductory film on the Trolley Era, photo exhibits, and a tour of some of our streetcars.

The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum opened to the public fifty years ago in 1963 in order to communicate the story of Pennsylvania’s Trolley Era. Currently the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum has 50 historic electric railway vehicles and is maintained and operated by over 150 volunteers and a small paid staff.

The museum is open to the public from March 22 through December 15.

Days are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during April and May and September through December. The museum is open every day during June, July and August. GREATER MONESSEN HISTORICAL SOCIETY SCHEDULES ANNUAL PUBLIC MEETING The Greater Monessen Historical Society will hold their annual public meeting on Sunday, March 10 at 1 p.m. in the Heritage Museum. The activities of the past year will be reviewed by the president and upcoming activities will be discussed. The treasurer will present the budget and cover projects to be undertaken in the current year. Board members will talk about their responsibilities in the society. Comments and ideas will be solicited from the membership.

Immediately following the public meeting, the Spring Ethnic Exhibit will be opened. This year’s exhibit focuses on the Croatian immigrants, who settled in Monessen and the Mon Valley region in the early years of the 20th century. Light refreshments will be served. The public is invited.

Starting in March, the Heritage Museum will be open Wednesday Saturday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., weather permitting.

The annual membership drive and fund campaign will be closing.

‘Newsboys’ with Britt Nicole Coming April 11 to Cal U Tickets went on sale Wednesday, February 20, for a concert by the Grammynominated and Dove Award-winning Christian pop-rock band “Newsboys,” performing with singer/songwriter Britt Nicole at 7 p.m. April 11 in the Convocation Center at Cal U. Opening for Newsboys are the band All Things New and the duo Campbell. A five-time winner of the Gospel Music Association’s Dove Award, Newsboys has five gold albums to their credit and 28 No. 1 radio hits. Their 2010 album, Born Again, reached No. 4 on the overall billboard chart.

In addition to Newsboys’ top hits, the playlist for the concert at Cal U will include songs from the band’s current album of rock-driven worship anthems, God’s Not Dead, including “Your Love Never Fails,” which has been No. 1 for six weeks in a row at Hot AC radio.

Cub Scouts everywhere look forward to the annual Pinewood Derby, and this year’s race was an exciting one for those in Monongahela’s Pack 1446. There were a few happy trophy winners, and other cubs going home just with their cars and big plans for next year’s race.

Cub Scout Pack 1446 is sponsored by the Monongahela United Methodist Church, and the race was held in the church activity room. The Pinewood Derby event has been an annual activity for Cub Scouts for quite a long time.

Kids start out with a kit consisting of a block of wood, axles, and wheels and then let creativity take over to finish with the fastest and best-looking car.

Weights of the gravity-powered cars are adjusted at a weigh-in prior to the race so they all weigh the same.

The track was state-of-the-art with an all-electronic finishing line. This is a necessity, as some of the 300 or so races run were too close to call by eye. In fact several were ties and had to be re-run.

Local People News Nicholas Gindele Honored on Attaining Rank of Eagle Scout

On Sunday, February 10, Nicholas Gindele was acknowledged as having completed all the requirements of the Eagle Rank at a Court of Honor conducted in Finley Hall of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Finleyville.

Present at the ceremony were Nick Gindele of Boy Scout Troop 1300, sponsored by members and leaders of Troop Thomas Presbyterian Church of Eighty Four, 1300, sponsored by Thomas proudly displays his Eagle Certificate with his dad, Presbyterian Church of Eighty Gerry, and mom, Cheryl, at his side.

Four, members of Gindele’s family, and many friends. Also present was Washington County Commissioner Harlan G. Shober Jr., who presented a certificate of achievement from the Washington County Commissioners.

Every aspiring Eagle Scout must complete a significant community service project. As his project, Gindele chose to renovate the interior of St. Francis Church’s Finley Hall. He planned and carried out the project with help from fellow scouts, his parents, and others. Gindele also was inducted into the Boy Scout Honor Society, The Order of the Arrow, in September of 2009. He received the Order Brotherhood Honor in August of 2010 and became the Chapter Chief in December of 2011. Other special honors include a World Conservation Award, the Twin Arrow Staff, and the Pope Pius Catholic Religious Emblem. Gindele is a 10th grade PA Cyber Student and has aspirations to attend college and study political science and business management.

WCCF Appoints Allocations and Programs Coordinator The Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF) is pleased to announce the appointment of Crystal Sickles as its allocations and programs coordinator.

As the allocations and programs coordinator, Sickles is responsible for the management of the WCCF’s allocation cycles, which include grants to charities and educational scholarships for students. She will also assist advisors to donor advised funds in recommending grants to the Board of Trustees.

Crystal Sickles Additionally, Sickles is responsible for the facilitation of community programs as approved by the Board. Her initial program focus will be to help qualifying 501(c)(3) charities prepare for WCCF Gives, a community-wide Day of Giving scheduled for September 10, 2013.

“Right-Pricing” Critical to Getting it Sold Have you noticed that there have been fewer homes available for sale locally? Compared to other years, real estate residential inventory in our area has been well below the number usually for sale at any given time. In fact, many local areas are experiencing actual shortages of homes for buyers. Because of these overall low inventory levels, we are seeing savvy homeowners listing now, as opposed to waiting until late spring, in the hope of maximizing their return. If you want to sell your property before summer, the right thing to do is to list now.

An ongoing problem we continue to see is homeowners listing at unrealistic prices. The issue is that

while the market is improving slightly, jumping the gun by listing with an unrealistically high asking price will not get your home sold and will actually cause you to lose money in long run.

We’re all hearing the good news that nationally and locally prices are moving upward. However, it is not rising by leaps and bounds in our part of the country and therefore does not warrant huge increases in local home prices. Many homeowners are taking the good news as a sign that they can get unrealistic prices for their homes—this is not the case. I’m not saying that a lowball price is acceptable, either. What I am saying is that your price must be realistic to sell your home. As the homeowner, it is not your job to determine what the most realistic price of your property should be. This is the responsibility of your real estate agent.

The job of a good real estate agent is to look at the available data and take into account several variables, including true market conditions, to help you determine a realistic price. Pricing property or taking a listing is the major responsibility of a good agent. More than ever, your agent needs to educate you and inform you of the true market conditions in your area. The true pulse of the market lies within the closed data, not in the prices your neighbors have their homes listed for right now. Many agents continue to accept overpriced listings, which only gives the seller false hope and will prolong the actual sale. In most cases, this creates a missed opportunity to get a sale as well. One good way to assess the situation in a specific area is to compare

inventory for sale versus other areas. For example, one area may have about 15% of all properties available for sale, while another area may have less than 5% of its total homes for sale. This is typically an indication that these properties are not priced correctly.

It is very important to note that the lenders and buyers control the current real estate market. I don’t like it either, however, that is the brutal truth. Sellers should understand the best pricing practices and hire a real estate agent who also understands the process. This will ensure that their home sells in a timely manner and for the most money possible. Pricing a home correctly from the beginning (as opposed to pricing it higher to leave room for negotiations) will actually get you more money.

Once again, your real estate agent needs to be honest and deliver the truth as to the true market conditions and to “right price” your property. Many agents are afraid to do this for fear of losing business, but the end result hurts the seller in long run, unfortunately. The best plan of action is to find an agent who understands how critical right pricing is and will lead you down the right path to getting your home sold as quickly as possible and for as much money as possible.

Women and Social Security

The Social Security program treats all workers - men and women - exactly the same in terms of the benefits they can receive. But women may want to familiarize themselves with what the program means to them in their particular circumstances.

One of the most significant things women need to remember about Social Security is the importance of promptly reporting a name change. If you haven't told us of a name change, your W-2 may not match the information in Social Security's records and this could affect the amount of your future benefits. Not changing your name with Social Security also can delay your federal income tax refund. To report a name change, please fill out an application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5). You can get the form by visiting www.socialsecurity.gov, or any Social Security office or card center, or by calling Social Security's toll-free number, 1800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).

You must show us certain identity documents, including one recently issued to prove your legal name change.

If expanding your family is in your plans, it's a good idea to apply for a Social Security number for your baby in the hospital, at the same time that you apply for your baby's birth certificate.

Social Security will mail the card to you.

If you wait, you must then separately provide evidence of your child's age, identity, and U.S. citizenship status, as well as proof of your identity. Then, we must verify your child's birth record, which can add 12 weeks to the time it takes to issue a card.

When women start receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits, other family members may be eligible for payments as well. For example, benefits can be paid to a husband: If he is age 62 or older or At any age, if he is caring for your child (the child must be younger than 16 or disabled and receiving Social Security benefits on your record).

Benefits also can be paid to unmarried children if they are: Younger than age 18 Between 18 and 19 years old, but in elementary or secondary school as fulltime students or Age 18 or older and severely disabled (the disability must have started before age 22).

The family of a woman who dies may be eligible for survivors’ benefits based on her work.

Mon Valley Hospital Offers Multiphasic Blood Analysis Just a small blood sample can detect diseases of the heart, liver, kidneys and circulatory system.

Mon Valley Hospital is sponsoring a multiphasic blood analysis screening, Saturday, March 23, from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center. Registration is required.

On each blood sample, 36 individual tests will be performed that can reveal anemia, lung disease, diabetes, leukemia, high cholesterol, blood disorders and much more. Additional screenings, including Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and Prostatic Specific Antigen (PSA), will also be available for a small additional cost.

MVH’s multiphasic blood analysis is open to the public at a cost of only $25/person. Testing is done by pre-registration and appointment only. Registrations are being accepted until Wednesday, March 20 — Monday-Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. at 724-258-1282. Participants are asked to provide the full name and complete address of the physician to whom their test results will be sent.

Medical professionals from the laboratory at MVH will conduct the testing. The procedure takes between 15 and 20 minutes. Light refreshments are served after testing is completed. A 12-hour fasting period is required prior to testing. Persons on medication should consult their physicians.

Monongahela Valley Hospital Doctor Elected to Medical Society Post Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Edward M. Stafford, M.D., an otolaryngologist or ear, nose and throat surgeon, with Washington ENT, was elected to serve as president of the Washington County Medical Society in January. He has served as presDr. Edward M. Stafford ident-elect for the past year.

Dr. Stafford practices comprehensive otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at offices in Carroll Twp. and in Washington.

He is a 2002 graduate of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

He completed residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery in 2007 at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in New York City. Following this, he completed a fellowship in advanced head and neck surgical oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Dr. Stafford also serves as a volunteer physician with Catholic Charities of Pittsburgh and is the author of several peer-reviewed manuscripts and invited book chapters on the topic of head and neck cancer. He resides in Pittsburgh.

Yough drives on Penn Hills in the Ringgold Ram Slam Girls’ Soccer Tournament, with an ending score of Yough 4, Penn Hills 1.

Although Belle Vernon won tournament gold, Yough, a lower seed in the tourney, surprised everyone by defeating second-seeded Penn Hills and took second place in the Ringgold Ram Slam Girls’ Soccer Tournament on February 16.

The event featured an exciting field of participating girls’ soccer teams.

The other obvious advantage is that spectators are much closer to the play than in outdoor soccer. It’s fast and exciting—almost a different game played with a different ball that has less bounce.

Fifteen teams took part in the tournament and placed in three brackets with some schools fielding two teams.

The preliminary games ran all day with each team playing at least two games (double elimination).

WCCC BASEBALL COACHING CLINIC SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 3 Westmoreland County Community College will hold a Baseball Coaching Clinic from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 3 at the WCCC Youngwood Campus gymnasium.

Sponsored by the college's Wolfpack Baseball team, the clinic is designed to provide coaches of youth teams with the necessary knowledge and skills to run effective and efficient baseball practices.

The clinic will address throwing, catching, pitching, hitting, infield and outfield play, bunting, base running and practice organization.

Former Oakland A's and Milwaukee Brewers manager Ken Macha will be the guest speaker.

The cost is $40 per coach. Group pricing of $250 is available and allows all coaches from one league or organization to attend.

Union Finley Midget Football Association 2013 Registration Come and join the Bear Nation! The Union Finley Midget Football Association is holding registration for returning and new football players and cheerleaders for the 2013 Season. Returning player and cheerleader registration will be held on Saturday, March 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. New player and cheerleader registration will be Saturday, March 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Registrations for both dates will take place at the Ringgold Middle School cafeteria. Child’s age on the date of July 31 determines the age group he or she will be placed in. Please bring copy of birth certificate.

Union Finley has been successfully competing in the Mon Valley Midget Football League for 39 years. This program has been and continues to be a successful feeder program for the surrounding school districts from which the players from Union Finley represent. Many graduates of this program have gone on to be members of WPIAL and state championship teams for their school districts.

Registration is open to all boys and girls in the Finleyville, South Park, Monongahela, Bethel Park, Peters Township, and Nottingham Township communities. Tiny Mite (flag) is for 5-7 year olds, Termites is for 8-9 year olds, Mighty Mites is for 10-11 year olds, and Midgets is for 12-13 year olds, for both football and cheerleading. The league provides all equipment and uniforms.

Chatham University Honors Ringgold Cross-Country/Track Mother-Daughter Duo

Ringgold Sophomore Kirsten McMichael and her mother, Ringgold Coach Jennifer McMichael, recently received awards from Chatham University. On February 8, at Chatham University’s Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day Celebration, Kirsten McMichael received the Patience Blayden Spirit of Sports Award in the high school sophomore category. The award recognizes the accomplishments of regional female high school and college students making positive contributions in the classroom, on the playing field, and in the community. Jennifer McMichael Received the Outstanding Coach Award, which honors a coach who positively affects her school and athletes’ experiences. This was the first mother-daughter duo to be honored at Chatham’s annual event.

Kirsten has medaled in numerous events in cross-country, indoor track, and outdoor track while taking all advanced classes and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She is currently ranked number one in her class. She devotes much of her free time to the community, serving the Salvation Army, Humane Society, and running a twoweek, cross-country camp for middle school and high school students. She is team captain in all three sports and has lettered in every sport season. Last year, she was the Washington County Champion, Mingo Classic Champion, a Tri State medalist, a WPIAL medalist, and a PIAA state qualifier in crosscountry. In indoor track, she qualified for and medaled in the Tri-State Track and Field Coaches Association Championships in the mile and 3,000 meter runs. She was overall champion in many races in the 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs.

Jennifer McMichael has been coaching at Ringgold for 13 years. She started as the assistant boys/girls coach for outdoor track and went on to found the middle school cross-country program, offering her time as head coach.

Other honorees are Jordon Bushaus (Hampton High School), Julia Hartz (Penn-Trafford High School), Angela Heintz (Seton LaSalle High School), and Rachael Bionski (Carlow University).

The middle school feeder program significantly strengthened the varsity cross-country program. For years, Jennifer worked to establish an indoor track and field team, again volunteering her time taking athletes to indoor meets until she succeeded in the program’s implementation four years ago.

She has since taken on the position of varsity head cross-country, indoor track, and outdoor track and field coordinator. In her second year as head coach of these teams, Jennifer has had three state qualifiers and more than two dozen school records.

Her success in recruiting student athletes into her programs has resulted in team growth of at least 50%, and the indoor track team has increased by 100%.

SCHOOL NEWS ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ Coming to Charleroi High School March 1, 2, and 3 Charleroi High School will present the comic rock musical Little Shop of Horrors on Friday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 3 at 2 p.m. All performances will be held in the Charleroi Area High School Auditorium.

Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of a down-and-out skid row floral assistant who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a craving for fresh blood. When the man-eating plant named Audrey II offers to make his dreams come true in Seen here are Andrew Miller (Seymour) and exchange for food, things go awry as Brandi Duvuvei (Audrey) with Audrey II. the alien’s hunger for human flesh grows. With music by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, this long-running on- and off-Broadway show was made into the 1986 film of the same name and has since been performed all over the world.

Cost of purchasing tickets in advance is $8 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens. All tickets purchased at the door will be $8. Ringgold Elementary School North held its annual Science Fair in January.

Open to students in grades 3, 4, and 5, 60 students submitted 34 individual/ group projects. Throughout the week, participants met with the judges to present their projects and perform experiments. Judging was handled by retired teachers Gary Anselmino (Science Finley Middle School) and Ernie Koontz (Chemistry/Physics - Upper St. Clair High School). Carnegie Science Center donated free passes to the first place winners. Congratulations to those students who won and to all of the participants for a job well done.

Ringgold School Board Delays Payment for Studies Conducted

At the February meeting of the Ringgold School Board, past due bills for payment to architect/engineers HHSDR were addressed. These bills, were for studies seeking information about building a new middle school.

Services related to a new middle school at the Ringgold High School site - $9,977.00 Building evaluations of Donora Elementary Center, Monongahela Elementary Center, and Ringgold Middle School - $50,369.50 Services related to the proposed Ringgold Intermediate School Renovations (Donora Elementary Center) - $11,309.50 Services related to the proposed Ringgold Middle School (Monongahela Elementary Center) - $20,159.00 Total $91,815.00 An innocuous request to the architects, such as “Can you estimate how much it would cost to …,” comes with a price tag, so bills for these manhours added up quickly. Payment has been tabled and delayed, because HHSDR raised its hourly rate without bringing the increase to the board for approval.

Solicitor Berggren informed the board that paying past bills to HHSDR, in effect, acknowledged acceptance of the higher rate. He also added, “The board is legally obligated to pay the bills, and if they are not paid, board members voting ‘no’ may be subject to being personally surcharged.”

Ringgold High School Presents “Willy Wonka”

Current Board President Mariann Bulko, with the help of the board majority, is trying to get the building of the new middle school underway in spite of these delays. The old DEC and MEC buildings in Donora and Monongahela will be appraised for sale.

The terms of seven of the existing board members end this year, and some worry that a new board could begin this cycle of debate once again, costing the Ringgold taxpayers even more.

Board Approves Hiring of Chief of Security The board approved the hiring of Clayton Schell, a retired state police officer from Venetia, as Chief of Security of the Ringgold School District at a salary of $42,000. Several board members strongly opposed this hiring, believing it was a duplication of a position currently held by Thomas Thompson.

Board member Chuck Smith shouted, “This board is throwing money away.”

Board member Bob Smith stated that he had spoken with local police, and they could provide the required services.

Bulko stated that she’d made the same inquires, and there was no interest.

Several board members wished to postpone this decision until additional security guidelines were available from federal and state sources. The vote for hiring was 5/4, with Smith, Mauro, Smith and Kennedy voting in opposition.

All nine board members were present as were the solicitor, secretary/treasurer, superintendent and members of the administration.

The Valley Seniors Club held their monthly meeting on January 22 at Riverside Place in Charleroi with Marlene Owens presiding. Reports were given by Toni Young and Fred Owens.

Because a member had suggested that a travelogue be presented at one of the meetings, Marlene presented a video on an Australia/New Zealand trip that was sent to her. As the video progressed, to everyone's surprise, including Marlene’s and Fred’s, they were seen in a group picture.

A trip to Rivers Casino is planned for March 27 and reservations should be made as soon as possible with the payment. The bus will leave Charleroi at 9:30 a.m. Call Marlene at 724-258-3950 to make arrangements.

West Newton Senior Center Plans Casino Trip The West Newton Senior Center is planning a Wheeling Casino Trip on April 3. Local Worship March Events at Monongahela’s First United Methodist Church

Ethnic Favorites at Charleroi’s Holy Ghost Featured During Lent

First United Methodist Church of Monongahela, 430 West Main St., is celebrating 200 Years in Mission and Ministry, 1813-2013. First on our program we are inviting the community to join in for an Easter Organ Recital with organist Jim Sykes at 7 p.m. on March 20. Bring your family and friends and have an enjoyable evening. Refreshment served. `The 200 Years Celebration Committee is having a signature quilt made and needs your signature. If you haven't signed the quilt, it is available after both services, with Easter being the last time signatures will be taken.

We are looking for members and past members who have been part of our church. We need to have you call or write so we can continue to send you information in our year-long celebration. If you have a memory you would like to share with us, please send it.

The United Methodist women continue to make prayer blankets. The women are also making pillowcase dresses for Dress a Girl Around the World.

Pillowcases, new or used, can be donated and may be dropped off at the church.

New Eagle’s Riverview Baptist Church to Host Spaghetti Dinner Riverview Baptist Church in New Eagle will host a spaghetti dinner on Sunday, March 10 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. in the church’s social hall. Money raised from the dinner will go towards the cost of sending a group from the church to Haiti. They will help construct a “rubble” house for a homeless earthquake victim during the week they will be there in April. There is no set charge for the dinners, but donations will be accepted. The mission trip is being conducted in association with A.m.erican Baptist Churches of Pennsylvania and Delaware (ABCOPAD). The church is located at 405 Main St. (Rt. 88), New Eagle.

8th Annual Egg Eggstravaganza Scheduled for Uniontown’s St. John Byzantine The 8th Egg Eggstravaganza will be held at the St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church Social Hall, 201 E. Main St., Uniontown on Sunday, March 17 from Noon – 5 p.m. This year, the Eggstravaganza is being sponsored

by GCU Lodge #81, local egg artists, and the St. John’s Ethnic Craft Club.

At least 20 tri-state egg artists will be demonstrating, displaying, and selling their particular art which will include Eastern European pysanky, Polish drop-and-pull wax relief eggs, Hungarian-style eggs, onion-skin-dyed etched or scratch type goose eggs, vinegar-etched emu eggs, wood burned eggs, and other collectable Tiffany-style eggs. Egg artists who are interested in participating may call the numbers listed below for registration information.

There will be an egg marketplace featuring egg dyes, beeswax, tools, books, videos, and pysanky kits for sale.

Traditional items used in ethnic Easter baskets will also be available, as will crafts.

A bake sale will include long rolls (nut, apricot, poppyseed, cottage

cheese), paska bread, cookies, homemade candy, and more. A Lenten luncheon menu, including St. John’s “famous” pirohi, halushki, pirohi pizza, pagach, and soups, will be available.

There will be a children’s corner featuring egg-related crafts and activities, storytelling, cookie decorating, and a jigsaw puzzle area.

Tickets can be purchased for a chance to win one of the many raffle items that will be available.
