BUSINESS DISTRICT MAKEOVER! Facade Improvement Project Hopes to Revitalize Charleroi

T

he Charleroi Design Committee, operating in conjunction with the Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, has been busy administering the Charleroi Facade Improvement Project II to assist business and property owners in Charleroi's central business district by matching their dollars spent in updating and enhancing their building facades. Funding for the program was secured through the Washington County Local Share Account earlier this year. This will represent the 2nd award of funding for the MVRCC. The first awards were issued in 2011 where the chamber distributed $46,000 for 2011 and 2012, representing approximately $120,000 in property improvements within the community. The Chamber follows the Main Street module for downtown façade grant guidelines. The Chairman of the Design Committee is John Mollenauer, Charleroi Mayor-elect, Debbie Buck, Charleroi Council and owner of Audrey’s Draperies, Michele Mackay, Charleroi Code Enforcement Officer, Jim Williams, Mon Valley Office, Tony Valkanas, community volunteer, Architect Bob Buscanics, Gary Riley, Mon Valley Signs, and Bob Rossi, musician. Guidelines and applications are available at the Chamber office for pick up or e-mail. Please call 724-483-3507 or e-mail debbiek@mvrchamber.org.

This property located on Fallowfield Ave. in Charleroi underwent a $2,500 face lift. The owners were reimbursed for $1,250 of the project costs under the Chamber’s Facade Improvement Grant program.

Transportation Bill to be Commended

Charleroi American Legion Responsible for Student Government Day Dear Editor, It was quite disturbing to the Charleroi American Legion Post and Auxiliary to see that Mayor Nancy Ellis in December’s Mon Valley Messenger laid claim to “creating” the Student Government Program as one of “her” great accomplishments during her term as mayor. Nothing could be further from the truth! Our Post did this program with previous Charleroi mayors and actually, an auxiliary member assisted Boro secretaries in writing the original County Student Government Day Proclamation. The Charleroi Legion is the only Post in Washington County that presently does this National Legion program. This county program was designed years ago to teach students, before they turn 18, the importance of county government and educate them in becoming better citizens and the importance of voting. Charleroi’s teachers and school officials participate by holding class-wide elections for county and city offices. The students learn of the responsibilities of various offices, nominations, campaigns, and elections. Once students become a candidate, have campaigned, and are elected, they then represent the school and students for American Legion County Student Government Day. Our Post and Auxiliary hold a luncheon every year for students, Boro and school representatives, and guests as students share their day’s experience serving in government. During Mayor Ellis’s first term, she refused to attend the luncheon and this year “insisted” on the luncheon at a time we and several Boro officials weren’t available. This luncheon cost the Boro significantly, as the Auxiliary always donated the entire luncheon as part of our community and youth program. Her final accomplishments claim to restore the Coyle…REALLY? Sincerely, B. Darlene McBurnie, Charleroi Auxiliary President Unit 22 Editor's note: The original article, which ran in the December 2013 Mon Valley Messenger, indicates that Ellis worked on Student Government Day, not that she created it.

Dear Editor, The transportation bill is good sausage. There’s an old adage that the legislative process is akin to making sausage. In the case of the passage of state transportation legislation, our governor and state legislators got it right. Not only did they find a way to make sausage, they included ingredients that produced a product low in fat that will actually improve our health. While the bill is far from perfect, it’s not bad when compared to a product more generally known for artery clogging attributes. The recipe was based on the Transportation Infrastructure Funding Commission report produced in August 2011. Since it was published, the $3.5 billion in transportation needs detailed in the report has likely risen to well over $4 billion. Because the bill calls for phasing in its primary source of revenue, removing a cap on the Oil Company Franchise Tax, the $2.3-2.4 billion per year of funding level for highways, bridges, and transit will not be achieved for five years. Yes, we will continue to face a gap in transportation resources and needs. But that will ensure that PennDOT continues to find ways to make every dollar count. And transit systems throughout the Commonwealth will still need to find and implement new operational efficiencies. While much was said of the bill’s provision to increase the prevailing wage requirement for transportation projects from $25,000 to $100,000, the provision will only impact a very small percentage of projects. The last time the prevailing wage level changed was in 1961 and this ingredient was essential in the political process. There are many cooks to thank for the transportation bill. Our governor, a fiscal conservative who has been derided by many from the left and right, understood that transportation legislation would only pass with his very public leadership. Republican lawmakers, including some who have not supported transportation legislations in the past, put up the majority of votes for a bill that will cost motorists more at the pump. There is even a story of one Democratic legislator who, in describing the deteriorating condition of our bridges, persuaded a Republican to change his vote. Legislators found a way to work together – unlike those who railed from the rafters that this sausage making was a bad idea. Most importantly our legislators found a way to actually make sausage, a rare accomplishment in our hyper-partisan environment. Thanks to all who stayed and worked together in the kitchen despite the heat. Joseph P. Kirk, Executive Director, Mon Valley Progress Council

The parade progressed from the Municipal Building parking lot to the pavilion where Santa arrived high atop a fire truck to greet the children. In addition to the parade, the evening included a bonfire, visit with Santa, treat bags, hot chocolate, cookies, arts and crafts, balloon art and the BVA Marching Band playing a variety of Christmas carols. Attendees were able to donate toys for the Toys for Tots collection. This annual community event is held in partnership with the Greater Rostraver Chamber of Commerce and the Rostraver Twp. Lions Club. Special thanks to the Rostraver Twp. Municipal Commissioners and Road Department for approving this location change on short notice.

‘Hoodie Hoo Day’ Slated for February 20 in Charleroi February 20 is the date set aside in the northern hemisphere for humans to unite and chase winter away. This year, Charleroi is encouraging everyone to join in on February 20 at exactly noon and shout at the sky “hoodie hoo” three times. “February tends to drag on, especially if the weather is harsh,” said Deb Keefer, Mon Valley Regional Chamber Director. “I believe this is a fun way to show our support for an early spring.” Keefer said that well over 1,500 people work in the Charleroi business district each day and many of them are forming groups to participate in the ‘hoodie hoo’ shout and festivities. Because numbers will enhance the effectiveness, a ‘hoodie hoo’ shout en mass will take place on 5th St. in downtown Charleroi at noon. Everyone is invited to attend and there is no cost for admission. The block between Fallowfield and McKean will be closed down at 11 a.m. for some pre-Hoodie Hoo activities, including music and prizes. Businesses are being asked to join in and offer Hoodie Hoo discounts and restaurant specials. It is rumored that Hoodie Hoo drinks and sandwiches are being created for the occasion at the bars and eateries. Please stay tuned to the Mon Valley Regional Chamber and Charleroi Borough websites and the Charleroi Hoodie Hoo Day Facebook pages for more information on this first annual event.

Downtown West Newton Inc. Extends Thanks for Successful ‘Miracle on Main Street’ Well, it's a rap! The 11 months of planning for the 2013 Miracle on Main Street came to a stunning end on Saturday, November 30. We were blessed with wonderful weather and a great group of volunteers that helped pull off this fabulous event. Downtown West Newton Inc. would like to thank our returning primary event sponsors which included: PNC Bank; Commercial Bank; Burtner's Jewelry Store; and Erie Insurance, the Steven Kenderes Agency. We would like to also thank all of our co-sponsors which included numerous businesses throughout the community. DWNI would also like to give a special thank you to the West Newton Senior Center, The LeGrande and the West Newton United Presbyterian Church for allowing us to use their locations during the event. We also cannot forget the West Newton Boro, West Newton Police Dept., and the West Newton Fire Dept. for helping with the decorations, the parade, and keeping all our patrons safe during the entire event. Lastly we could not have done this without all of our vendors, parade participants, churches, community organizations, and all of our visitors to the event. West Newton put on a wonderful show and people as far away as Delmont, Mt Pleasant, Donora, Elizabeth, Greensburg and everywhere in between took away a great picture of what small town U.S.A. looks like. Everyone should be very proud of what we accomplished and next year's event will be even better. So if you have any suggestions, please feel free to visit our websitedwni.org and shoot us an email on what you would like to see in next year's event. Also if you would like to join our Miracle on Main Street Committee, please give us a call at 724-872-0100. We will begin planning in January.

Mon Valley “Florida Day” Scheduled For February Plans are moving into high gear once again for Mon Valley Florida Day, which has become an annual event. The traditional event will be held Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Sea Dog Brewing Company, 26200 US 19 North, in Clearwater, Florida, and organizers are looking forward to surpassing the success of this year’s gathering. An overflow crowd of some 175 persons attended the 2013 reunion at Beef O’Brady’s family sports restaurant and pub in Clearwater, Florida representing towns throughout the Mon Valley and from other places around the United States. Participants came from Monongahela, Charleroi, Donora, Monessen, Elizabeth, Elrama, Finleyville, Belle Vernon, Washington and Perryopolis as well as Naples, St. Petersburg, Punta Gorda, Venice, Florence, Largo, Tarpon Springs, Madeira Beach, Lake Placid and Gulfport in Florida as well as Virginia and Colorado. Lou and Maria Sepe, former area residents now living in Dunedin, Florida, again are leading preparations for the 2014 reunion. Sepe, a 1951 graduate of Monongahela High School, re-emphasized that Mon Valley Florida Day is a rather informal affair designed to bring together people with ties for the Mon Valley for reminiscing in a casual atmosphere. It is open to anyone and everyone originally from the Mon Valley who still lives there or anywhere else.

“There are no geographic boundaries,” he said. “We all share a common bond – that is, our roots are in the Mon Valley, so the doors are open to anyone who wants to attend. It’s nothing fancy, just a chance to get together and rekindle a lot of great memories and create new ones.” The February 22 festivities will begin at 11:30 a.m. and reservations are not required. Participants may order lunch or snacks from the restaurant menu and a preview of that agenda is available at www.seadogbrewing.com or by calling 727-466-4916 for additional information. Seadog Brewing Company is a new restaurant and pub in Clearwater and will provide accommodations in a spacious room solely for the Mon Valley Florida Day participants. Sepe recalled that the Mon Valley Florida Day concept was created many years ago by three former Monongahela Area businessmen – Joe Fida (automobile license services and insurance), Lee Venanzi (appliances, bowling alleys, beer distributor), and Ralph Losey (butcher and meat market). It was initially held in Largo, Florida and was highly successful for a number of years before going into hiatus. The reunions were revived by Sepe and his wife and a group of others originally from or still in the Mon Valley and western Pennsylvania. Additional information is available by contacting Sepe at wildcats9@tampabay.rr.com or 727-733-9678.

The first dinner is slated for Sunday, January 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 444 Jackson St. “We knew the Elks would be great partners to work with,” noted library director Elina Filander. “They’ve come to our rescue on two major projects in recent years with funding so we know they have our interests at heart.” The Elks will serve as primary hosts for the dinners, providing the locale and the expertise in hosting dinners. Dinner will consist of spaghetti and meatballs, salad, roll/bread, dessert, and choice of coffee, and hot or iced tea. Other drinks may be purchased at the bar. Ring in the New Year with a COLA By Irv Horowitz, Social Security District Manager in Rostraver, PA

Many people ring in the new year with champagne. People who receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) get to ring it in with a COLA. This year, more than 60 million Americans are receiving a 1.5 percent cost of living adjustment (COLA) in their monthly benefit payment. The 1.5% COLA begins with increased benefits for more than 57 million Social Security beneficiaries in January 2014, and payments to more than 8 million SSI recipients in late December 2013. The estimated average monthly Social Security payment to a retired worker is $1,294 (in 2014), up from $1,275 (in 2013). The average monthly Social Security disability payment for an individual is $1,148 (in 2014), up from $1,131 (in 2013). The basic monthly federal payment for SSI is $721 (in 2014), up from $710 (in 2013). Some other changes that take effect in January of each year are based on the increase in average wages. For example, the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security payroll tax (taxable maximum) will increase to $117,000, up from $113,700. Of the estimated 165 million workers who will pay Social Security taxes in 2014, about 10 million will pay higher taxes as a result of the increase in the taxable maximum. The amount of earnings needed for one credit of Social Security coverage has gone up as well, but all workers can still earn up to four credits in a year. In 2014, a worker earns a credit after earning $1,200. In 2013, one credit of coverage was $1,160. It takes forty credits to be fully insured for retirement benefits. Information about Medicare changes for 2014 is available at www.medicare.gov. Visit www.socialsecurity.gov/pressoffice to learn more about the COLA and other Social Security changes in 2014.

Donora Historical Society Prepares Presentation on Founding of Donora After an extremely busy month of October, the Donora Historical Society welcomed Mr. Dennis Ballas on Monday, November 4th, who discussed the 1918 Influenza Epidemic and its impact on the Mon Valley and Fayette County during our historical presentation. On Monday, December 2nd, the Society met for our annual Christmas gathering as 20 people attended a dinner at nearby Duke’s Café. Great food and a good time were had by all. This was our last event of 2013. We will not have a formal presentation in January due to the holidays but the museum will be open. Weather permitting our next historical presentation will take place on Saturday, February 8 at 1 p.m. when we assemble in the meeting area of the lower level of the Donora Library to accommodate more attendees. The title of this Saturday presentation is “The Founding of Donora.” Donora was founded in 1901, but the village that existed prior to Donora was a town known as West Columbia that was founded in 1814 – 200 years ago. To recognize the Bicentennial of West Columbia, we will be showing photos, telling stories and showing artifacts of West Columbia, as well as its transition into the newer and bigger town that was to become Donora. During the remainder of the winter, work will continue on the Rivers of Steel grant that we were awarded in 2013. The matching grant from the State of Pennsylvania, through the

Rivers of Steel Heritage Area in Homestead, will be used to continue our ongoing effort to have the Bruce Dreisbach glass plate negatives developed into actual photos. The basis of the money that was matched was a generous donation in the name of the late Steven Acsai - a 1933 graduate of Donora High School who played football for the Dragons. Mr. Acsai's son from North Carolina, also named Steven, never forgot where his father came from and took an interest in the Society and made the donation in his father's honor in 2012. A group of 200 to 300 negatives, some of which are 100 years old, will be selected and transported to Bernie’s Photo Center and Photo Antiquities museum located on the North Shore of Pittsburgh to have this project completed. The result of this project will be more photos that can be either displayed in the museum or used in future presentations that bring “early” Donora to life. The Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum is located at the intersection of 6th and McKean in the heart of Donora, and is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. or by appointment. If you have additional questions about the subjects mentioned above, the society, museum, meetings or possibly volunteering, feel free to stop by or email us at DonoraHistoricalSociety@ gmail.com or by calling 724-823-0364 and leaving a message. Or visit us on the website at www.DonoraHistoricalSociety.org.

Lapghans Bring Holiday Cheer to Carroll Twp.’s Hilltop Residents

January 2014 ————————————————————————————————————————————

Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Light-Up Night Entertains Community

Lexi Herron (center) is shown presenting colorful lapghans to Lynn Matsick (left), the activities director at the Residence at Hilltop, and Jillian Garber (right), the activities assistant.

Storybooks and television specials present Santa’s elves as jovial men and women dressed in green felt suits with pointed hats. They also can be former school teachers dressed in jeans, as was the case earlier this month when Lexi Herron, of Finleyville, visited the Residence at Hilltop, in Carroll Twp., to deliver 19 crocheted “lapghans” that she hand crafted for the residents. Mr. Herron calls her creations lapghans because they are smaller than the average afghan — an ideal size for people to place on their laps. “My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was in the eighth grade,” said Mrs. Herron, who had little time to crochet until she retired in 2004. Mrs. Herron’s first donation of lapghans was to Fayette Home Care & Hospice, the contact made by her sister, a dietitian at Uniontown Hospital at the time. In addition to donating lapghans to the hospice three times, she also donated 20 lapghans to the

residents of the Presbyterian Home in Washington this past September. “Each of my lapghans is a little different from the others,” she explained. “I use different colors of yarn and crochet some in pastels and others in vibrant colors. I have made them in red, white and blue for veterans and black, gold and white for Steelers fans.” When she began crocheting lapghans to donate to hospices and assisted-care facilities, Mrs. Herron purchased the yarn on her own. Once word spread that she was crocheting for patients, people began to send her yarn, which she gladly accepted. Mrs. Herron welcomes donations of yarn. White and black, along with red, blue and gold are needed. For more information or to learn how you can donate yarn, contact Mrs. Herron at rodlexi@gmail.com — please write “yarn” in the subject line of the email or call 724-348-8214, afternoons or evenings only.

At Monongahela Valley Hospital’s 29th Annual Light-Up Night celebration on Nov. 25, these two lucky boys were chosen to flip the giant light switch to light up the Christmas decorations throughout several acres of the hospital’s campus. Pictured are Hunter Bright, left, age 7, of Monongahela, and Randy Molek, right, age 9, of Coal Center. Hunter’s grandmother, Jayne Bright, and Randy’s mother, Julie Henry, are both RNs who work at MVH.

Santa and Mrs. Claus, Christmas carols, decorations and a seven-foottall Frosty the Snowman entertained patients watching from their windows as well as families from the community gathered at Monongahela Valley Hospital’s 29th Annual Light-Up Night on Nov. 25. After President and CEO Louis J. Panza Jr.’s message, the evening’s grand moment came as two lucky boys flipped the giant light switch, illuminating the two-story tree and several acres of decorations. Randomly chosen from among MVH employees’ children and grandchildren ages 5 to 10, the children who flipped the giant switch were: • Hunter Bright, age 7, grandson of Jayne Bright, and son of Ashley Milton and Jason Bright, all of Monongahela. Hunter’s stepfather is Steve Milton of Monongahela and his little brother is Parker, age 1. • Randy Molek, age, 9, son of Julie Henry and Randy Molek, and stepson of Gary Henry, all of Coal Center. Randy’s sister Marissa, age 2, also attended. Jayne Bright and Julie Henry

are both RNs who work at MVH in the Electroencephalography (EEG) department and the Operating Rooms, respectively. “So, here we are gathered again as a community — physicians, volunteers, employees, neighbors, our families and guests, as well as patients watching from their rooms,” said Mr. Panza. “On behalf of myself and our 1,200 employees, I want to wish you a happy holiday season and tell you how pleased we are that you are here to kick off the 2013 Christmas season with us.” New at this year’s event was a train display in the hospital lobby and an ensemble from the Monessen High School marching band that led Santa and Mrs. Claus to campus. The Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc., sold baked goods and Joseph’s Nursery & Garden Center in Monessen donated and distributed light-up Christmas trees and Santa wands to the children. Visit MVH’s Facebook page to view the photo album from the event at www.facebook.com/Monvalleyhospital.

the month were the poinsettias that centered each table. They were won by Fr. Young, Barbara Smith, Martha Ghilani, Jo Anna Stroh, Carin Alvarez, Margie Pankewicz, Annetta Ducato, and Carol Bobby. Jeanne Bindi won the framed photograph of the month. Nedley called the business portion on the meeting to order. Committee reports were given. The winning storefront window display was Broad Avenue Treasures, located at 909 Broad Ave. The storefront featured favorite vintage decorations and adornments, along with seasonal décor pieces and a carousel horse. Santa and his elf helper could be found greeting children at the 500 block of

Broad Ave., at Snapshot 47 Photography and later in the day towards the 900 block at Antiques on Broad. The business owners were honored to have special visitors Regina Abel and Carl Knoblock of the Small Business Administration www.sba.gov visit with each of them and talk small business strategies. Let's Talk Real Estate by ROGER DOLANCH Broker/Owner

Real Estate and Taxes We REALTORS® often point out that home ownership allows a lot of tax advantages not available to someone who merely pays rent. Any time the topic is taxes, you should always consult a tax professional for specific details regarding your individual circumstances. This article is meant to provide just few common items for you to discuss with your tax preparer. Almost every level of government sets various laws and/or regulations regarding real estate transactions. These may cover items as simple as occupancy permits and dye tests all the way up to the more complex issues such as capital gains and estate taxes. Some expenses are deductible and some are not. For those that are not, the expenses may be sometimes be used to offset the taxable amount when reporting a sale. If you have a mortgage on your home, a portion of your monthly payment is applied toward interest. If you are

monvalleymessenger.com

———————————————————————————————————————

able to itemize deductions using a Schedule A, the interest portion of your mortgage payment is deductible as long as it is considered an “acquisition debt.” Another possible Schedule A deduction involves the real estate property taxes on primary and secondary residences. The Assessed Value assigned by the County and millages are used to calculate the amounts due annually. These taxes are paid to the County, the municipality and the school district where the property is located. If you have a mortgage that has an escrow account for taxes and insurance, remember that you don’t deduct what you pay into that account. Only deduct what is paid from the account to the taxing authority. Insurance is not deductible on your residences. Again, check with your tax preparer, because there may limitations that apply to your personal situation. Good news is that both federal and state tax codes provide certain capital gains exclusions that allow sellers and buyers to avoid paying income tax on transactions when certain conditions apply. As a homeowner you are entitled to an exemption of $250,000 (if you are single) or $500,000 (if you are married) of profit on your home when you sell. To qualify, you must live in your house at least two of the prior five years before the sale. If you are purchasing another house in the same region, you may need the proceeds to purchase your next house, but if you are downsizing or moving to a less-expensive area of the country, you will be able to put the extra proceeds in your pocket tax free. The taxes to be paid on estates when people die and their assets are dispensed through wills and trusts are

treated differently for Federal and State purposes. The federal estate tax law requires tax to be paid on estates when the total value of the estate is above a predetermined figure. Since 2010, the estate tax exemption was on the first $1 million of the estate’s worth. Amounts above that figure that are taxed at 55 percent. Pennsylvania taxes estates and trusts very differently from the IRS and you should consult with a knowledgeable estate planner to help you prepare for the consequences. For landlords, a Schedule E is used to determine taxable income because there are many operating expenses involved with investment property. That means there are many other deductions such as depreciation, snow removal, maintenance, insurance and others. When all is said and done, the best advice anyone can ever receive is that excellent record keeping is absolutely paramount to maximize all possible deductions to minimize taxes paid.

Records for a Reason Plays it Forward for People in Need Records for a Reason, founded by Jennifer and Bob Carota, is a partnership between community volunteers and local businesses to help individuals and families who have fallen on hard times in the Mon Valley Region. Records for a Reason began when Jennifer bought her husband Bob a jukebox for his birthday in September 2013. Jennifer and Bob had fun searching for records and quickly struck gold when a lead on an online site led them to a local gentleman who had it all and more, and one heck of a story too. They learned that the fellow was selling his entire record collection to pay for his son’s funeral. They bought up most of what he had and even went back the second time to buy more. Surprisingly, they also learned that this man was also a former DJ at one of the clubs that they would frequent during their younger days and had attended many of the same shows in the ‘90s and even worked for a period of time with Bob's uncle at a local radio station. From this great connection, Records for a Reason was born in the hopes to help this man and hopefully many other local families struggling to get back on their feet as a result of a loss or life changing event. Vintage records are available for purchase at various community events throughout the year as well in the storefronts of these local businesses: The Counseling House; Salon Eye Candy; Broad Ave. Treasures; Antiques on Broad; Vintage and Vines; and the GRC office, all in Belle Vernon, and Mod on Main and Chaney's Natural Wellness in Monongahela. HEALTH, NUTRITION & FITNESS Meningitis Vaccine Helps To Protect Young Adults From Disease During Outbreaks On December 2013, officials at two universities on the east and west coasts struggled to get control of dangerous meningitis outbreaks. Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord. Early symptoms include fever, headache, body aches and fatigue. Other symptoms include: stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, confusion and sensitivity to light. While rare, meningitis is often deadly. Nearly 10 - 15% of those who contract the disease die and another 10 15% are left with a permanent disability such as deafness, brain damage or the loss of a limb.

Relatively few people infected with the meningococcal bacteria become sick; however, they can become carriers. The meningococcal bacteria can live in the throat for weeks and even months before a person becomes ill. Unlike the common cold, there is a vaccine to protect people from meningitis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that young adults — particularly collegebound students — be vaccinated against meningitis. “Approximately 1,000 to 1,200 people get meningococcal disease each year in the United States. Even being treated with an antibiotic, individuals

are left with loss of their arms or legs, nervous system problems, deafness, seizures and strokes which can have permanent damaging neurological effects and even death,” said Michelle Antanovich, CRNP, clinical lead at Healthy Directions at Giant Eagle. “Infectious diseases tend to spread more quickly in community settings where larger groups of people gather together. College students living in dormitories are at increased risk for meningococcal meningitis. To keep from being one of these statistics, get your children immunized today.” Healthy Directions, located in the Finleyville Giant Eagle, has a supply

of the meningitis vaccine. Other vaccines available include: Hepatitis A and B, Influenza, Pneumonia, Shingles, Varicella (Chicken Pox) and Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis (DPT). A certified registered nurse practitioner is available to administer immunizations at Healthy Directions Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Finleyville Giant Eagle is located at 3701 Route 88, Finleyville. Some people who have been diagnosed with cancer will travel hundreds of miles from their homes for the latest treatments. People in western Pennsylvania have access to one of the latest therapies at Monongahela Valley Hospital’s (MVH) Charles L. and Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center, in Carroll Township. MVH is the first and only hospital in western Pennsylvania that offers radiation therapy treatments using the new Elekta Agility that includes a multi-leaf collimator (MLC) device that provides precise, high-resolution beam shaping to target tumors. Use of the MLC device enables medical professionals at MVH to administer higher doses of radiation at multiple sites simultaneously. It delivers radiation to the unique contours of the tumor while reducing the risk of exposure to healthy tissue. “Our new MLC, with a groundbreaking design which features leaf speeds that are twice as fast as conventional beam shaping devices, enables the radiation oncology team at MVH to offer a new level of conformance to tumor targets for rapid, accurate patient treatments,” said Mohsen Isaac, M.D., MVH’s director of radiation oncology and clinical assistant professor at Temple University School of Medicine. An MLC is a device composed of many individual tungsten “leaves” that shape beams of therapeutic radiation that are delivered from different angles around the patient. The Agility is equipped with 160 MLCs which is twice the number of leaves used in most typical treatment centers. It also includes ultra-fast leaf movements. At MVH, skilled oncologists, surgeons, nurses, radiation therapists, social workers, nutritionists, pharmacists and case management coordinators help patients win the battle against cancer using advanced technology with a personalized approach. MVH’s cancer program, which includes medical oncology, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, diagnostic radiology and surgical services, is accredited by the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer. Stay Fit this Winter with SilverSneakers® and Mon Valley YMCA Proper nutrition and adequate physical activity are important at any age but can play a critical role in our lives as we age. Millions of older adults are taking stock of their health and hitting the gym to get the physical activity they need. Regular physical activity has beneficial effects on most (if not all) organ systems and consequently prevents a broad range of health problems and diseases. You’re never too old to exercise. Physical activity is likely to help keep you feeling young versus living a sedentary life. Activities that help build muscle strength, improve balance, and promote walking significantly reduce falls in older persons. Whether you enjoy walking on the treadmill, riding the stationary bike or taking group exercise classes like those available through the Healthways SilverSneakers® Fitness Program, it’s important to keep moving. If you are new to exercise or haven’t exercised in a long time, be sure to consult your physician before starting a program. Here are some helpful tips for staying active: • Engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate activity, such as brisk walking, on five or more days. • Include strength training exercises in your regular workouts at least twice a week to improve and maintain mus-

FURNITURE & BEDDING Q: Can you please explain how iComfort Sleep Systems by Serta is any different than a standard memory foam mattress

"Pothole" Highway Appliances

A: Today, many people prefer a memory foam mattress for its pressure-relieving comfort, ability to conform and adapt to each person's body, and outstanding motion isolation. Even so, traditional memory foam technology hasn't changed much since it was invented more than 40 years ago. While it can provide great comfort to many, others find that memory foam mattresses can sleep too hot, sink in too deeply or make it hard to adjust sleep positions in the night. Isn't it about time that someone reinvented memory foam? Introducing the new iComfort Sleep System by Serta, featuring our Cool Action™ Gel Memory Foam - the world’s first memory foam infused with the support and cooling touch of Serta’s MicroSupport™ gel. This revolutionary new memory foam is designed to deliver superior pressure relief and more targeted support while sleeping cooler than ordinary memory foam. Plus, it is antimicrobial and dust mite resistant to help protect your mattress from potential allergens.

COOL ACTION™ GEL MEMORY FOAM What makes iComfort technology better than ordinary memory foam? Serta’s Cool Action Gel Memory Foam is designed to feel like traditional memory foam...only better! What makes our Cool Action material different is the MicroSupport gel, which is infused into premium memory foam to create an extremely comfortable, more supportive and cooler sleep surface. The iComfort® Sleep System offers a variety of options so you can find the level of comfort and support that is perfect for you. Choose from four different models with distinct feels ranging from cushion firm to luxuriously plush. Visit Highway Appliances today and let us show you the how the iComfort Sleep System by Serta can improve your sleeping experience. 2214 Rt. 88, Dunlevy(Exit 40 off Interstate 70, and just minutes off Rt. 43) 724-326-5616 www.highwayappliance.com
