‘Park ‘til Dark’ and ‘Pour at the Park’ Events Set for May 20 in South Park On Saturday, May 20, South Park will be buzzing for their annual ‘Park ‘til Dark’ and ‘Pour at the Park’ events to help raise funds for the Allegheny County Parks Foundation.

Park ‘til Dark is a daylong set of free activities designed to engage park users, and offers something for everyone! Join us from sun up to sun down as we partner with our friends across the county to host free, family- friendly activities outdoors throughout the day on May 20. Featuring free and engaging activities such as yoga, bicycling, ranger-led tours, birdwatching, kayaking, tree plantings and more at our most popular parks. This year we will have our drop-in zone at the parking lot on Corrigan Drive and the Bethel Park Farmers Market will be on-site along with music, food and vendors.

The day will be capped with Pour at the Park, our annual fundraising event featuring local brews and bites! Pour at the Park is held from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at the Museum Building at the Fairgrounds. This ticketed regional brews and bites festival is unique in the region because it is family-friendly, offering a children’s fun-zone and live, local music right inside the beautiful backdrop of the parks. Nearly 800 patrons attend each event every year.

Attendees will enjoy brews & spirits, plus bites and Live Entertainment from Shelf Life String Band. There will also be a ticket raffle for fabulous baskets valued at $250 to $500 each. And this year’s event is more family-

friendly than ever with children's discovery activities hosted by Mad Science. Children 5 and under are free. (Please leave your furry friends at home.) This is a rain or shine event, and tickets are non-refundable.

The event supports the Allegheny County Parks Foundation and its mission to improve, conserve and restore the nine Allegheny County Parks.

Memorial Day Events Slated in Elizabeth The Kastan Uveges VFW Post 7632, its Auxiliary and the Alonzo L. Weigle American Legion Post 553 are preparing for the Memorial Day parade and ceremony that will be held in Elizabeth on Monday, May 29. The parade starts at 9:30AM with the ceremony immediately following. The committee is requesting any veterans or active-duty military personnel who want to ride in the parade to contact Kim Olcott at 412-527-7034 by May 15.

The ceremony will be held in the parking lot next to the Elizabeth Volunteer Fire Company social hall. The Masters of Ceremony will be Lt. Commander Rick Elster, USN, (ret.) Commander VFW Post 7632 and Commander Ross Woolum, American Legion Post 553. The guest speaker will be Lieutenant Colonel Lukas L. Toth.

Friends Of South Park Library Break Own Book Sale Record Dear Editor; The Friends wish to thank all, who participated in some way in their April 20, 21, 22 book sale. This includes book sorters, Wed/Thurs. setup people, Public Works, library staff, donors of sale items, check-out table workers, Interact high school students and clean-up crew.

This sale broke all kinds of past sale records. Each day sales were higher than any previous years. The Friends couldn’t have done it without all of above help each and every time.

Thanks to those who also donated a bit extra here and there, when they purchased sale items. The Friends made over $7,000 at their sale, their biggest sale EVER in their almost 50 year history of raising monies for the South Park Library. Each sale takes from 80-100 people to get it off the ground and make it work, successfully not once a year but twice a year in April and October. Their next sale is October 19, 20,21. More info on next sale will appear in August or September.

The Friends wish to thank all those avid readers, who still believe in holding books in their hands and not relying on devices to read a book.

“They want the real thing”. Friends hope everyone enjoys their purchases, Thanks for coming far and wide to our sale and making it so successful.

MAY 6 BIKE RUN & SOCIAL GATHERING - A Bike Run and Social Gathering ‘Giving Chase A Chance’ will take place on Saturday, May 6 at the Uniontown American Legion Post 51. Chase is a victim of child abuse, and suffers from a severe brain injury, blindness and he cannot walk or talk. All proceeds raised from the event will go toward Chase’s medical needs. Registration is from 9:00AM – 11:45AM, with kickstands up at 12 noon. Registration fee is $15 for Driver and $10 for Passenger. A social gathering will start at approximately 5:00PM. All cars, trucks, and any legal road vehicles are welcome.

FREE FISHING DERBY - A free fishing derby will be held on Sunday, May 21, at Northmoreland Park from 8:00am to 1:00pm. This event is sponsored by the Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks and Recreation, the Westmoreland County Sportsmen’s League, and Dick’s Sporting Goods. First and sec-

ond place trophies and gift certificates will be awarded for longest trout, longest carp, and longest other fish of legal size in both the adult and youth divisions. A trophy and certificate will also be awarded for the best “Catch of the Day” in both youth and adult categories. Adults age 16 and older must display a valid 2023 Pennsylvania Fishing License. Registration is free and begins at 7:30am on the lakeside deck outside of the Activity Center.

Summer Car Cruises Announced at Thomas Presbyterian Join us at Thomas Presbyterian Church at 1068 Linden Road, Eighty Four, PA for our 2023 Car Cruises. The first Car Cruise will be held on May 13 and all cruises run from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. We have good food and great tuners. The 2023 car cruise schedule is as follows: May 13, May 27, June 10, June 24, July 8, July 22, and August 5. We will then close out the season with our annual Pig Roast and Car Show on August 19. All the proceeds from the car cruises are used to support a mission trip. The proceeds from our Pig Roast and Car Show are donated to Pittsburgh based Life Changing Service Dogs for Vets. West Jefferson Hills Historical Society to Present WWII Program With Memorial Day right around the corner, the West Jefferson Hills Historical Society will present a special World War II program at its May meeting. Author Todd DePastino will relate the incredible story of Operation Pastorius, an ambitious German attempt to sabotage American industry and transportation, including the Horseshoe Curve. Landing eight saboteurs on Long Island and Florida from two U-boats, the operation was a comedy of errors, but it reveals much about the characters of the two countries at war. Both society and community members are invited to hear this program on a little-known WWII tale at the WJHHS May meeting, 7:00 P.M. on May 24 in the Community Rooms of the Jefferson Hills Borough Building.

A Bike Run and Social Gathering ‘Giving Chase A Chance’ will take place on Saturday, May 6 at the Uniontown American Legion Post 51. Chase is a victim of child abuse, and suffers from a severe brain injury, blindness and he cannot walk or talk. All proceeds raised from the event will go toward Chase’s medical needs. Registration is from 9:00AM – 11:45AM, with kickstands up at 12 noon. Registration fee is $15 for Driver and $10 for Passenger. A social gathering will start at approximately 5:00PM. RJ Sokol Memorial Golf Outing Slated for August 19 Currently Seeking Golfers and Door Prize Donations The RJ Sokol 3rd Annual Memorial Golf Outing will be held this year on Saturday, August 19th at 8:00AM at The Madison Club. This years golf outing will benefit two volunteer fire departments – the North Belle Vernon, and Sewickley Twp. RJ himself was a lifelong Volunteer firefighter and knew that when the alarm went off at 3:00AM, ‘All Volunteer’ meant someone somewhere was getting out of bed to go help someone they didn’t know in need. All proceeds will be split equally between both companies. RJ passed away in 2021 due to Covid 19. He is best known for the North Belle Vernon Community Bank Park off of I-70.

Greenock Log House in Elizabeth Township Plans Productive Season Greenock U.M. Church Preschool students tour the Greenock Log House with Debbie Popp Gilbert of the Elizabeth Township Historical Society. The log house will be open for family events from 1:00PM to 5:00PM, the second Saturday’s of the summer except July 22 when American military will be honored.

Family fun and history will come alive this summer when 18th century reenactors host games and open the doors at Greenock Log House in Elizabeth Township the second Saturdays of each month this summer. Children will have the opportunities to experience activities similar to those in the late 1700s and 1800s that youngsters did in their limited free time with gatherings of friends and families.

“There will be twists as the games and craft projects also will shed light on environmental and conservation

as the early settlers lived a truly sustainable life,” said Debbie Popp Gilbert of the Elizabeth Township Historical Society (ETHS).

Historical society members will take the lead on committees organizing each event that will be held from 1:00PM to 5:00PM as well as conduct tours of the two-story log house built around 1790.

The first event will be held on May 13 marking the arrival of spring with the traditional celebration as children swing colorful ribbons around the May pole. Children will use recyclable materials to make bird feeders and plant flower seeds in biodegradable pots also as known as ice cream cones. Children’s agility will be exercised June 10 when they try “old-time” picnic games like three-legged and sack races and cool-off with ice cream.

Time to reflect on those who served in the nation’s military will be observed July 22 as the 160th Battle of Gettysburg is marked. Reenactors will offer tribute to those who served in the military and their family members who attend.

Activities on August 12 will turn domestic as families focused on preserving garden goods and the households engaged in preserving and pickling. Information on herbs for seasoning and health will be offered. Crafting leather will be

demonstrated.

Vorderbrueggen referred to the PLEX as a medically based wellness fitness center with the most educated staff. Their programs will continue to grow with the takeover by Penn Highlands Healthcare, and he provided members with information on joining the PLEX. At the April 5, 2023 Rostraver Woman’s Club Meeting, clubwoman Tami Brazon shared stories and pictures from her 2023 trip to the Holy Land. It was an entertaining presentation and very timely with it being holy week. She inspired members to think about different cultures and the history of the region. We also showered one of our members with gifts of support & encouragement during her illness.

The pierogi fundraiser held for Nate Stanchfield was very successful and raised $1,900 for Nate and his family. Members hope that he will improve every week until his leukemia is GONE. The Rostraver Woman’s Club is busy planning the annual Belle Vernon Area High School Senior Girls Tea. The BVAHS Senior Tea will be held on May 15.

Valley All Sports Hall of Fame. He is a member of the Rostraver Township Historical Society and supports the Sewickley Township Grange Fair.

When asked of his greatest achievements on the Board, Harhai said, “It is two-fold. For students, it was developing and leading a safe and responsible in-person commencement ceremony for the class of 2020 at the onset of the pandemic. For employees and taxpayers, it has been bringing a consistent, rational, and level-headed perspective to each Board interaction.

My voting, conduct, and actions over the past four years speak for themselves. Were there decisions that were unpopular at times? Yes, but I’ve tried to make reasonable decisions that take into consideration the best interests of all stakeholders.”

Harhai, a registered Republican, has cross-filed on the Democrat and Republican ballots for the May 16 primary election.

Free Fishing Derby at Northmoreland Park - May 21 A free fishing derby will be held on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at Northmoreland Park from 8:00am to 1:00pm. This event is sponsored by the Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks and Recreation, the Westmoreland County Sportsmen’s League, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Armed Forces Day Military Display Planned in Monessen As part of the celebration of Monessen’s 125th Birthday, the Monessen Veterans are hosting a display of what the United States Military is bringing to Monessen City Park on Armed Forces Day, May 20, 2023.

The display will include military vehicles, weapons and possibly a helicopter and other equipment used by our military. The United States Air Force Civilian Component, The Civil Air Patrol will also participate, as well as recruiters from every branch of the United States military. There will be military personnel on hand to answer questions about the military and the equipment.

Expected to be in attendance are General David D. Thompson, Vice Chief of United States Space Force Operations and Dr. Joel Mozer, Chief Scientist of the United States Space Force.

The Display will open at 10:00AM at the Captain John P. Onderko Memorial Walking Track near the main entrance to the park on Grand Boulevard and will be open until 5:00PM. There is no charge for this event.

Go “Back To The ‘70s” With Theatre Organist Dave Wickerham PATOS to Celebrate Over 50 Years in Pittsburgh Dave Wickerham returns to Pittsburgh on Friday, June 9, 2023 with a program featuring music from the 1970s, as the Pittsburgh Area Theatre Organ Society (PATOS) salutes its 53 years of promoting theatre organ in Pittsburgh.

The event will be held at Keystone Oaks High School in Dormont, home of the PATOS Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ, at 7:30PM. This program will mark Mr. Wickerham’s fourth appearance in Pittsburgh since 2013, reminding us once again that he’s always been an audience favorite.

Dave was originally scheduled to perform this feature of 1970s music (the decade of the founding of PATOS) back in April 2020, but it was postponed due to the pandemic.

“Better late than never!” says Dale Abraham, PATOS president. “Dave’s musical styling and versatility has always been enthusiastically welcomed at Keystone Oaks, so we’re fortunate to have him back.”

Mr. Wickerham was honored by the American Theatre Organ Society Dave Wickerham (ATOS) as Organist of the Year in 2011. Since then, he has performed at hundreds of organ venues across the USA. Moreover, he’s toured Australia and New Zealand several times in the past 15 years. Dave is also the resident theatre organist at the Crystal Theatre Performing Arts Center in Crystal Falls, Michigan.

School News...School News Thomas Jefferson High School’s Inaugural Career Fair Draws Nearly 60 Vendors

Thomas Jefferson High School’s first Career Fair was a tremendous success, with TJ students having an opportunity to interact with the nearly 60 vendors who attended.

Representatives from the businesses and organizations visited with more than 900 TJ students and discussed part-time and full-time job opportunities, internships and careers in a variety of industries. Students were able to apply for jobs on location with several of the vendors.

The career fair was primarily organized by Ken Gruntz, TJ’s Work-Study Coordinator and Industrial Technology teacher, Business teacher/INCubator advisor Lisa Kostella and TJ students who are members of the National Business Honor Society, which Kostella advises.

“The Career Fair was a good opportunity for students to think about their future,” Gruntz said. “It was great to see freshmen through the seniors engaging with all of the vendors. The response from all of the varied companies and organizations was fantastic. Many of the attendees commented to me that our students were asking great questions and how articulate they were. Hopefully, our students benefited from this experience, and we look forward to growing the career fair in the future.”

"This was a fantastic opportunity for Thomas Jefferson students to learn about many different careers and to network with business professionals!” stated Kostella. “The response has been positive from students and vendors alike.

TJ's National Business Honor Society students did a remarkable job running the event. Vendors mentioned how this was the most well-organized high school career fair they've attended. We are beyond thankful for the people who

volunteered their time to make this fair a success; we could not have done it without them.”

"As we think about future career fairs, we would love to involve more attendees related to STEM, arts/production, medical/sports medicine, government and computer science," Kostella added.

The 59 businesses and organizations attending the career fair included vendors from: Healthcare, Local Unions and Trades (Steamfitters, Bricklayers, Boilermakers, Sheet Metal and Utility workers), Law Enforcement and First Responders, Colleges, Universities and Education, Retail, Military, Construction and Engineering, Technology Solutions, Restaurants, Real Estate, Media, Leisure and Hospitality, Banking and Financial Services, Energy, Automotive and Aviation.

Camp Invention Set for June 19-23 at Pleasant Hills Middle School Open to all Pittsburgh area K-6 Students

Camp Invention is returning to Pleasant Hills Middle School for a weeklong STEM Summer Camp from June 19-23. The camp is open to all greater Pittsburgh area students entering kindergarten through sixth grade this fall.

Camp Invention is a great opportunity for younger students to be creative and participate in hands-on challenges working with emerging technologies.

This year’s program is designed to inspire confidence and creativity in STEM for the campers.

Certified local educators will lead the campers in fun, collaborative problem-

solving activities. The camp runs from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. the week of June 1923 at PHMS. The discount code for early enrollment (WONDER15) expires May 17.

Water Pollution Poster Contest Winners Announced At the March 15, 2023 Public Education and Outreach Program on Storm Water Impacts, the Rostraver Township Board of Commissioners hosted a pizza party and awards presentation for fourth graders at Marion Elementary and Rostraver Elementary.

In December and January, Rostraver Township staff visited both elementary schools and gave presentations on water pollution and invited the students to submit a poster on ways they can reduce water pollution.

The poster contest is an annual part of Rostraver Township’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Program. It is a program regulated by the EPA and DEP to address water pollution. The students were tasked with creating posters to show simple things they can do in their daily lives to limit pollution ending up in our waterways like the Monongahela and Youghiogheny River.

West Jefferson Hills School District Teams Earn First Place in Future Problem Solving State Bowl Two West Jefferson Hills School District teams garnered first place at the recent Pennsylvania Future Problem Solving State Bowl in Camp Hill, Pa. This year’s challenge was to solve problems under the theme, “Throw Away Society.” The district had eight teams qualify for the competition in the three divisions. In the Junior division (grades 4-6), Pleasant Hills Middle School took home first, second, and third place. The first-place team was Ava Flood, Lauren Griesheimer, Claire Hogan and Maddy Oates.

In the Senior division (grades 10-12), Thomas Jefferson High School’s squad of Theo Doerfler, Celina McElhinny, Caraline Sommer and Joyce Xu, earned first place. As the top teams in their divisions, the PHMS and TJ teams earned an invitation to the FPS International Competition, June 7-11 at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where they will compete with students from more than 14 countries.

The second-place team from Pleasant Hills Middle School was Eli Doerfler, Austin Hinkle, Sullivan Korhnak and Ollie Whitsel and the third place team was Cole Dailey, Tyler Hills, Alex Lauver and Steven Wills.

In the Middle division (grades 7-9), Thomas Jefferson’s team of ninth grade students earned third place: Abby Kauffman, Aneri Patel, Samantha Strope and Alivia Zulka.

The participating students had to consider the challenges with consumers throwing away products after minimal or even a single use. They developed solutions to increase sustainability, product life-cycles, and product materials to support a circular economy.

Andrew Capretto, the gifted teacher at PHMS, is the advisor for WJHSD’s Future Problem Solving Bowl teams.

Individuals must be 11 years of age to take certification test the day of the class. Parents are encouraged to take the class, spend time at the facilities or pick drop off and pick up children. Annual Plant Sale And Garden Market Set For May 20 In Peters Township The Giant Oaks Garden Club (GOGC) will sponsor its 22nd Annual Plant Sale and Garden Market on Saturday, May 20 at the Peters Township Public Library, in Peters Township. The plant sale will feature a large variety of quality potted perennial plants selected from members’ gardens. The sale runs from 9:00 a.m. until 12 Noon, rain or shine. Time strictly enforced.

Also featured are herbs, vegetables, annuals, hanging baskets and raffle baskets of gardening items. GOGC members, many of whom are Master Gardeners, are available to assist and answer individual gardening questions from the public.

The Garden Market will feature new and lightly used gardening items.

The Plant Sale and Garden Market fundraiser helps fund contributions to many local community groups, including the Peters Township Library, Phipps Conservatory, Western PA Conservancy, Peters Township Meals on Wheels, Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, the National Aviary, and many more. The club also awards two $1500 scholarships to a local graduating senior planning a course of study in a gardening-related discipline.

A: A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Virtually all of us will get cataracts as we age. Cataract formation is usually a gradual process and vision changes can be subtle. Common symptoms include blurred or dim vision, sensitivity to light with glare, seeing halos, difficulty with night vision, and needing brighter light for reading. Often, the prescripBy Aaron S. A special microscope called a slit lamp is utilized to view and grade your cataract. You will be evaluated for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration as well.

The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is based on how much the cataract interferes with your vision and daily activities. There is usually no rush, but the surgery can become more urgent if, for example, you fail to have adequate vision for driving.

Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures. Typically, it is an outpatient procedure done under light intravenous (IV) sedation. Through microscopic incisions, your cloudy natural lens is emulsified; with ultrasonic energy and is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your vision should significantly improve over the next few days as long as you use your prescribed post-surgical eye drops.

There are different surgical options, including upgrades that can be associated with out-of-pocket expenses. Standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL is covered by insurance. It is a fine option if you are comfortable wearing glasses for both distance and near vision after surgery. Upgraded options leverage the latest technologies, including laser-assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, and premium IOLs (toric and/or multifocal IOLs). These technologies deliver customized surgery, address optical irregularities of your eyes, such as astigmatism, and minimize spectacle dependence. You can choose to

An ophthalmologist will meet with you for a cataract evaluation, with the intention of learning your individual visual needs, answering all of your questions, and guiding you toward the most appropriate option for which you may qualify. In addition to the options mentioned, an ophthalmologist can also offer “drop-less” cataract surgery if you have difficulty instilling eye drops. Typically, regardless of which surgical option is chosen, the surgery takes minutes, you leave without a stitch or patch, and the improvement is life changing.

A corneal sub-specialist, such as myself, can also perform a number of treatments concurrently with your cataract surgery if you have other co-existing eye diseases. An example includes the latest in corneal transplantation (DSAEK, DMEK) for Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy. Another example is minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to lower your eye pressure. Combined surgery, when needed, provides convenience and the quickest route to your best possible vision.
