WJHSD Celebrates Inaugural Hall of Fame Inductees Kiwanis Club of Baldwin to Hold 47th Annual Monte Carlo Night The Kiwanis Club of Baldwin invites you to our 47th Annual Monte Carlo Night on Saturday, April 22 from 6:00PM - 10:00PM. This exciting and fun event will be held at Skyview Volunteer Fire Hall, 660 Noble Dr. in West Mifflin. Guests will enjoy dinner, horse races, door prizes, 50/50 raffle, instant bingo, basket auction, and more!

Tickets may be purchased online at www.baldwinpakiwanis.org. Tickets are $35/person and includes dinner, snacks, soft drinks, and beer. Race Horses can also be purchased online before the event for $10 each.

Proceeds benefit community activities in the Pittsburgh area and the club’s general operating fund. This event is for ages 21 and older. Tickets will not be sold at the event!

It was a fun, festive evening celebrating the inaugural inductees into the West Jefferson Hills School District Hall of Fame. A total of 29 individuals and two WPIAL Championship teams, the vast majority of whom are graduates of Thomas Jefferson High School, were inducted in the categories of Academics, Arts or Athletics.

Mr. Chromulak will provide first person narratives of his experiences in the war as well as other information and stories about the Vietnam War. This will be an excellent chance to learn about the historical significance of the Vietnam War as well as the sacrifices made by those who served. The public is invited at no cost. JOURNEY TO JERUSALEM - St. John XXIII Parish presentation of a deeply, personal view on the last week of Christ, will be enacted next weekend, Palm Sunday, April 2, 2023. This is an opportunity to appreciate Holy Week in a completely new and personal way. The experience is set up like tours guided by apostles or women disciples who knew Jesus and experienced His earthly ministry and some of Tridium. Reflection rooms will be set up to share the experience of discipleship, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday as told by the apostles and women disciples.

FLUTE CONCERT - Whitehall Public Library is proud to host a special concert that showcases the grace and beauty of the flute. ‘Absolutely Flute: A Musical Evening with Emissary Quartet’ will take place on Wednesday, April 5 at 7:00 PM. Belle Vernon and Frazier Interact Clubs Hold 29th Annual Banquet The Belle Vernon and Frazier Interact Clubs met for their 29th Annual Banquet at the Sons of Italy in Perryopolis on March 23.

The event serves to celebrate the past year of community service with members of the Belle Vernon Rotary, their sponsoring club. The Interact Clubs each presented their list Brittney Thomas, of Frazier Interact of community events that the offers the invocation at the 29th members participated in durAnnual Interact Banquet ing the year. Many of the Interact members were given certificates for distinguished service and the new members were individually introduced.

Each club chose a community person of the year to be honored, Michael Rozell from Belle Vernon and Devan White from Frazier. Both recipients made remarks and thanked the students for the honor.

During the program, Belle More than 100 students and Rotary guests Vernon Rotary President attended the event.

Brian Pirilla presented donations to both clubs for their help at the Rotary Pancake Dinner held in February. Christina Dinh serves as President of the Belle Vernon Area Club and Jensyn Hartman is Frazier's Interact Club President.

Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania to Eliminate Use of Plastic Shopping Bags To help reduce single-use plastic waste, Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania will eliminate the use of plastic bags in its 34 area thrift stores.

Shoppers are encouraged to help Goodwill help the environment by using a free box from the store, bringing their own reusable bag, or purchasing a Goodwill fabric tote for $1 for future shopping trips.

By going plastic bag free, Goodwill SWPA expects to reduce the waste of over 300,000 plastic bags per year. This represents an important step Goodwill SWPA is taking to reduce waste and furthering its organizational commitment to promoting environmental sustainability. As a pioneer in the concepts of reuse and repurposing for over 100 years, Goodwill thrift stores provide low cost gently-used items for sale to the public. In 2022, 56 million pounds of household donations were thrifted, repurposed, recycled, or reused by Goodwill SWPA. “One of our core values at Goodwill is responsibility,” said Andrew Marano, Vice President of Donated Goods Retail at Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania. “We strive to minimize our environmental impact and maximize the value of each donation to support Goodwill’s mission services. This enables us to help thousands of people we help annually through job training and education programs.”

Experts have indicated that Americans use 100 billion plastic bags per year, which requires 12 million barrels of oil to manufacture. Besides the impacts of the pollution from the manufacturing process on the environment and public health, single-use plastic bags also contribute to litter in communities, collect in waterways, and clog storm drains, which can increase flooding in neighborhoods during wet weather events. In 2021, PennEnvironment released a report that found microplastics in 100 percent of tested Pennsylvania waterways. Single-use plastic bags also obstruct recycling machines and take a minimum of 500 years to decompose in a landfill.

The event will be held in the Home Economics Building, 2050 Buffalo Drive in South Park.

It’s the perfect time to order your flats, hanging and patio baskets from the Friends of South Park Spring Flower and Garden Sale.

Plants are supplied by a local grower and are well suited for our gardens.

South Hills Chorale Music Director Phil Aley Resigns After 10 Successful Concert Seasons For sixty-two years, the 90-voice South Hills Chorale has taken the local stage singing American classics, Broadway, pop songs, spirituals, old favorites, classical, sacred, and holiday works. This spring, the South Hills Chorale thanks Phil Aley for 10 successful years of service as Music Director. At the close of the Bethel Park-based choir’s winter season, Aley announced his retirement.

Phil delighted audiences in the Pittsburgh area with programs that featured a range of musical genres, from American classics to uplifting spirituals.

Among his many achievements, in addition to directing the South Hills Chorale, Phil is a retired Music Director at Baldwin Community United Methodist Church and an accomplished organist.

Phil is passing the baton to Skylar Bunk as Music Director for the Spring 2023 concert season. Skyler has served alongside Phil as Assistant Director and Accompanist for eight years. He holds a Bachelor's and a Master's degree from Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University, where he studied piano, voice, and choral conducting. He is a faculty member at the Center for Theater Arts in Mt. Lebanon where he teaches piano and voice. Currently Skylar is studying at Carnegie Mellon’s Marta Sanchez Dalcroze Training Center and is a candidate for the Certificate in Dalcroze Eurhythmics.

Jefferson Regional Foundation Celebrates its Tenth Anniversary with the Launch of the ‘Community Voice Fund’ Jefferson Regional Foundation marks its 10th anniversary in March, and it will celebrate that milestone with a new initiative and grant opportunity, the ‘Community Voice Fund.’

The “Then, Ten, and Time Ahead” anniversary theme provides an opportunity for a renewed focus on engaging community members on strategies for increasing overall health and well-being in the towns and municipalities Jefferson Regional Hospital serves, according to Chief Executive Officer Dr. Trisha Gadson. The Community Voice Fund will provide grants of up to $35,000 for nonprofit organizations and/or resident groups who are partnering with nonprofit organizations to convene residents, partners and stakeholders of the Jefferson service area to accomplish that goal.

Jefferson Regional Foundation was created when the former Jefferson Hospital became part of the Allegheny Health Network. The Foundation is dedicated to grantmaking in the South Hills and Mon Valley areas of Pittsburgh that will improve the health and vitality of residents, and it has awarded more than $20 million in grants since its inception. It also created the Jefferson Community Collaborative, an active network of 100 plus community-serving organizations that share a mission of bringing together change-makers to positively impact the health and vitality of communities south of Pittsburgh.

Although the foundation has consistently partnered with nonprofit organizations to offer resources for unmet needs, the Community Voice Fund illustrates the importance and necessity for residents to have an active voice in setting priorities and objectives that accompany strategies and planning that affect their communities, Gadson said.

“The passion, pride, drive, resilience, and ingenuity of residents within the Jefferson service area, often who are under-resourced and over-burdened, cannot be understated,” Gadson said. “Faced with the systemic challenges of racism, poverty, housing insecurity, community violence, and transportation, no person or entity is better poised to address community needs than residents with lived experiences.”

Organizations and community groups within and serving communities in the JRF service area can collaborate on a Community Voice Fund application, Gadson said. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, starting this month through April 28. Final reports from organizations that receive funding will be shared.

South Park Library “Friends” to Host Spring Book Sale

Cover Story: WJHSD Celebrates Inaugural Hall of Fame Inductees (COVER STORY, Continued from page 1.)

A crowd of 225 filled the Georgetown Center on March 4 for the Hall of Fame banquet, with inductees from the Classes of 2019-20 and 2022-23 traveling from San Diego, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Florida, New York City and other locales outside of Western Pennsylvania to attend.

One inductee was selected to speak on behalf of the other inductees in their category. Dr. Peter Wu ’83 spoke on behalf of the Academics inductees, former English, District theater and communications educator Karen Suszynski ’68 for the Arts inductees and Richard Costanzo ’04 for the Athletics inductees.

“As a District, we were so excited to celebrate some of our best and brightest academic scholars, fine art curators and athletes to graduate from the West Jefferson Hills School District,” said WJHSD Superintendent Dr. Janet Sardon, a 1989 TJ graduate. “The inductees are people who have forged a path of success while making a difference in the world around them. They are role models and mentors for our current students and a strong representative of who we are and who we want to be as a school district.”

Kelly Langenohl Dzanaj, a 2006 TJ graduate and afternoon drive host on 100.7 The Star, served as Master of Ceremonies for the Hall of Fame induction banquet.

The district re-launched its Hall of Fame program last fall, re-opening the nomination process. West Jefferson Hills had announced it was starting the Hall of Fame program during the 2019-20 school year, but the first class of inductees were never announced or recognized due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thomas Jefferson graduates who have distinguished themselves in the areas of Academics, Arts or Athletics, as well as staff and community members, are eligible for induction, if they meet the established Hall of Fame criteria. Inductees from the two inaugural classes included former students, teachers, staff and community members who have made unique and lasting contributions to the district and the West Elizabeth, Jefferson Hills and Pleasant Hills communities.

Committees in each of the three areas Academics, Arts and Athletics - considered the nominees and recommended selections for induction to the entire Hall of Fame Committee.

The nomination form for the WJHSD Hall of Fame Class of 2023-24 will be posted on the District’s website, www.wjhsd.net, and social media platforms, with nominations being accepted into this fall.

South Park Women’s Club Meeting Features ‘White Elephant Night’ The South Park Women’s Club will have another fun evening with fellow club members at their meeting on April 17. They will have their annual pot-luck dinner, business meeting and the ever popular “White Elephant” night. The elephant figure has been traveling through membership homes for many, many years each spring only to return the following spring in an unidentifiable gift wrap package.

Since there are many gifts wrapped, only the person bringing it that night knows it is “IT”. Other gifts will be auctioned off as well. Only then, when the winner of that auctioned package opens it, will we know, who won the “White Elephant” for 2023 and next year. They are responsible for bringing it back to next years 2024 April meeting.

The last official gathering of the women will be at their May luncheon, where new officers will be installed for May 2023 untill May 2024.

‘Cookie College 2023’ Set for May 7 The tradition of the cookie table is alive and well and will be celebrated at “Cookie College 2023” on Sunday, May 7 from 12 noon to 4:00PM at the DoubleTree Hotel, Meadowlands. Advance registration is required.

The event is being hosted by the popular Facebook group, “The Wedding Cookie Table Community” that established a Guinness record for the world’s largest wedding cookie table in Chess Park, Monongahela on Sunday, August 11, 2019 with four weddings and 88,425 cookies.

Cookie College 2023 will feature two sumptuous cookie tables being designed by Mona D’Ambrosia of Mona’a Unique Boutique of Johnstown. Program participants will be able to see demonstrations of how their favorite cookies are made, such as peaches, ladylocks, nutrolls, pecan tassies and many more. Vendors whose products are used to make cookies or accompany the cookie table will be on hand. Some vendor spaces are still available. Experts will be demonstrating such things as how to design a cookie table, how to make serving pieces from thrift store finds and how to ship and freeze cookies. Belle Vernon Rotary Celebrates 90th Anniversary

Belle Vernon Rotary President, Brian Pirilla, toasts the club’s milestone.

The Belle Vernon Rotary club recently celebrated 90 years of global and local service at the Club House Grille at Cedarbrook Golf Course where they hold their weekly meetings every Thursday. Special guest was former club member, Phil Morrow, who is a Paul Harris Fellow and Honorary Member of the club.

Members individually reminisced on video their Rotary journey over the years.

Thirty-eight members now serve the Belle Vernon and Perryopolis area, and the club has a rich legacy of meeting community needs over the past ninety years. The club was chartered February 1933 with Norman L. Niece serving as the first president. After challenges presented to the organization during Covid, the club recently renewed the traditional annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Festival and is busy planning its Regatta on the Yough event on August 27. Local People News Local McDonald’s Employee Wins College Scholarship Scholarships for Excellence in Academics, Work and Community Are Always on the Menu at McDonald’s Madison Heid, an employee at McDonald’s of South Park, 5261 Library Road, was recently surprised with a $2,500 scholarship check.

A Community College of Allegheny County student majoring in Anesthesia Technology, Heid was selected for the scholarship based on her academic success, community involvement and job performance.

Heid joined the McDonald’s restaurant team as a crew member in 2020 and has been promoted to her current position as shift manager.

“I was so surprised,” Heid said.

“This will help me pay for the rest of Madison Heid (middle) poses with her scholarship alongside Assistant Manager Ruben Hutchison (left) and General Manager Brittany Neal (right). my college so that I can get my degree and pursue my career.”

SPORTS Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame Banquet Set for June 16, 2023 The Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame (MMVASHOF) will hold its 28th annual banquet at St. Spyridon Hellenic Center in Monessen, PA on Friday, June 16, at 5:30 p.m. This year, six new inductees will be welcomed into the mythical Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame conceived by sportswriters Floyd France and John Bunardzya. With the Class of 2023 the total number of inductees is now 261. The original Mon Valley Sports Writers Hall of Fame started in 1951 with the selection of Donora’s Stan Musial and Rostraver’s Bert Rechichar.

The Class of 2023 is comprised of Charleroi’s Fran Celaschi, Elizabeth Forward’s Bill Keenist, Ringgold’s Mike Brantley, Belle Vernon Area’s Jason Murray, Monessen’s “Sissy” Cieply Jochmann, and deceased Bill Toprani of Monongahela High School.

Chairman of the Sports Hall of Fame, Dennis Stitch, called the selections “a representative class with a cross section of Mon Valley athletes who have honored their communities with their dedication to sports.”

The MMVASHOF selection committee includes Chairman Brian Herman, Carl Crawley, Jr., Dale Hamer, Tom Jenkins, Bill Kubin, Randy Marino, Jeremy Sellew, Steve Russell, Bill Hughes, Rob Harhai, Dr. Kevin Ryan and Dennis Stitch.

The Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame is one of 30 chapters of The Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame made up of four geographical regions: Central, Eastern, Northern and Western. Organized with its inaugural induction class in 1963, the state ceremonial dinner rotates between the four regions.

The Mid Mon Valley chapter has inducted 23 members into the State Hall of Fame. They include: Stan Musial, Bert Rechichar, Jim Russell, Arnold Galiffa, Dan Towler, John Potsklan, Sever J. Toretti, H.C. Carlson, Lou “Bimbo” Cecconi, Armand Niccolai, Bap Manzini, Ken Griffey, Fred Cox, Ron Necciai, Myron Pottios, Bill Malinchak, Sam Havrilak, Dale Hamer, Eric Crabtree, Craig Fayak, Fred Mazurek, Robert “Red” Worrell, and this past year, Bruce Dal Canton.

Betty” Sissy” Cieply Jochmann A 1971 Monessen High School grad, Betty” Sissy” Cieply Jochmann was one of the early female Mon Valley gymnasts to distinguish herself in WPIAL and PIAA competition. She led Monessen High School to four straight PIAA titles beginning in 1968. Betty displayed her individual talent on the uneven bars where she was the PIAA State champion from 1968-1971. She also medaled each year on the vault and was the All-Around State Champion from 1968 through 1971 in both WPIAL and PIAA competition. At Clarion University of PA, Jochmann was a state champion in 1972 in the All-Around competition and on the uneven bars.

Mike Brantley A 1974 Ringgold High School grad, Mike Brantley was quarterback Joe Montana’s favorite receiver. Mike had over 100-yards receiving in the comeback against Monessen where Montana took over as quarterback against Monessen in 1973. Brantley earned All Big 10 Conference honors and was named a Big 33 alternate.

Brantley’s other sport at Ringgold was basketball where he helped to lead his team to a WPIAL championship in 1973 averaging 18 ppg. Brantley was All Section in basketball. All five starters on that WPIAL team are now members of the Mid Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame. The other four inductees include Ulice Payne, Joe Montana, Scott Nedrow, and Mel Boyd. Brantley went on to play football for Indiana State University where he played split end. He was a fluid 6’ 3,” 185-pound receiver who led the team with 16 catches for 241-yards in 1977. An All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, Brantley graduated in 1979. He had a brush with the Dallas Cowboys at a free-agent tryout.

Fran “Cheech” Celaschi A 1956 Charleroi High grad, Fran “Cheech” Celaschi is remembered as one of Charleroi’s longest serving baseball coaches from 1965 to 1992. With over 300 wins, Fran won 11 section titles. In 1982, he took the Cougars to the WPIAL finals. At California University of Pennsylvania in the early 1960s he was Bruce Dal Canton’s catcher on the Vulcan’s 1962 NAIA District championship team.

Bill Toprani A 1957 Monongahela High grad, Bill Toprani ranks as the world’s foremost duckpin bowler. At age 27 he led the nation’s American RubberBand Duckpin Bowling Congress. With over 80 perfect games, Toprani owns every duckpin record in history. Highlights of his career include: his 845 three-game series was not only a personal record, but a world record; on 10 occasions he bowled a series with a score of 800 pins or better; he compiled 36 games with scores over 700, and 42 games with scores topping 600.

Jason Murray A 1997 Belle Vernon Area High grad, Jason Murray had career numbers at Belle Vernon that are amazing. He was the total package with his power, speed, and agility. He averaged close to a first down every time he carried the football. He rushed for 4,752 on 532 attempts. His yards per carry average was 8.8. He also holds the record for most points in a game at 30. He was a twotime All-Keystone Conference selection. Murray led BVA High to the school’s first WPIAL football championship in 1995. At Notre Dame he played in 25 games. He turned himself into a solid blocker and was a big contributor on special teams. He graduated from the Mendoza College of business at the University of Notre Dame with a degree in accounting. He had a tryout with the Cincinnati Bengals. Murray is enshrined in the Belle Vernon Area Football Hall of Fame.

Bill Keenist A 1976 Elizabeth Forward graduate, Bill Keenist served the Detroit Lions in various front office positions for 36 years. He was the Lions first team historian, serving from 2018 until retirement in 2021. Keenist prepared along the way with public relations positions with the Washington Redskins, the USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers, and the Civic Area. In 1985, he joined the Lions as assistant public relations director. He advanced up the corporate ladder to become vice president in charge of administration and communications. Keenist presently serves as NFL game day representative and co-hosts “Gridiron Wrap”, a weekly football radio talk show in Detroit.

School News...School News WJHSD Elementary and Intermediate School Students Showcase Fun Technology Skills at School Board Meeting Thirty elementary and intermediate school students demonstrated some of the fun technology skills they’re learning at the February monthly meeting of the West Jefferson Hills School District Board.

A quartet of fifth grade students from Jefferson Hills Intermediate School discussed the school’s TJ3D Club, which uses multiple 3D printers to create a variety of items which are sold.

The club leaders distributed several items they have produced to the School Board members.

Jason Legg, who teaches K-2 business, computer and information technology in the district spoke about some of the initiatives students at Gill Hall Elementary and McClellan Elementary Schools have been learning about and creating in school, which they demonstrated at the Board meeting.

First grade students from McClellan Elementary collaborated with their team to construct Sphero Indi car courses for their cars to traverse. Students were tasked with planning courses using color tiles, which the car then senses to perform different functions based on each color. Through this activity students were provided with an early screen-free coding experience. They were able to create step by step “codes” for their cars, practice pattern recognition, as well as decomposition and debugging of their course to solve any problem areas.

Second grade students from Gill Hall Elementary created platform games using the Code Spark Academy app, then showed Board members how the game was created and played it with them on their laptops. Prior to creating their games they completed block based coding levels to be able to earn the variety of components to build their games. Through these levels they learned about sequences, loops, automation and conditional statements.

The students then designed their games by using game components such as blocks, enemy characters, obstacles, props, backgrounds, gems and other game

elements. Students also added visual block programming to their games creating actions for their blocks, characters, and other game components.

Students focused on keeping their games balanced with the ability to win the game, while still maintaining a level of difficulty and making frequent revisions to improve their games along the way.

A: A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Virtually all of us will get cataracts as we age. Cataract formation is usually a gradual process and vision changes can be subtle. Common symptoms include blurred or dim vision, sensitivity to light with glare, seeing halos, difficulty with night vision, and needing brighter light for reading. Often, the prescripBy Aaron S. A special microscope called a slit lamp is utilized to view and grade your cataract. You will be evaluated for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration as well.

The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is based on how much the cataract interferes with your vision and daily activities. There is usually no rush, but the surgery can become more urgent if, for example, you fail to have adequate vision for driving.

Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures. Typically, it is an outpatient procedure done under light intravenous (IV) sedation. Through microscopic incisions, your cloudy natural lens is emulsified; with ultrasonic energy and is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your vision should significantly improve over the next few days as long as you use your prescribed post-surgical eye drops.

There are different surgical options, including upgrades that can be associated with out-of-pocket expenses. Standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL is covered by insurance. It is a fine option if you are comfortable wearing glasses for both distance and near vision after surgery. Upgraded options leverage the latest technologies, including laser-assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, and premium IOLs (toric and/or multifocal IOLs). These technologies deliver customized surgery, address optical irregularities of your eyes, such as astigmatism, and minimize spectacle dependence. You can choose to

An example includes the latest in corneal transplantation (DSAEK, DMEK) for Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy. Another example is minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to lower your eye pressure. Combined surgery, when needed, provides convenience and the quickest route to your best possible vision.
